#And a therapy dog for Brenda

This fandom seriously just… frustrates me to the point where I’m writing this rant. 

This fandom does not understand flawed and complex characters. 

And, uh. Let’s talk about that. 

How they treat David and Exer:

The amount of bias this fandom holds for Exer and David is astounding. “Oh, the gay boys! They’re so sweet and wouldn’t hurt anyone!” (Paraphrasing, obviously, but this fandom does seriously put them on a pedestal)

When David and Exer were introduced, from very early on, they were shown to be heavily flawed characters. 

Exer is responsible for the entire story. He tricked Jackson to going to the girl’s changing room, which is what kicked off everything. Jackson getting bullied and harassed, Jackson eventually having his name cleared, Jackson not trusting the REDs, Jackson eventually learning about Exer’s powers, Exer having his powers found out, etc. This all started because Exer fucked with Jackson. He gaslit him to hell and back, he harassed him, he was jealous that Jackson was getting close with Brenda, his ex who he felt very possessive over. 

And David? David is a follower. He hears people saying “Jackson did something bad” and he immediately turned on Jackson, not hearing him out. Gossiping about him, talking shit to his face, letting people bully and harass him. And I understand that it was his sister, so he’s bound to feel more protective. But what happens when he learns it was actually Pamela who was ‘harassed’ by Jackson? He doesn’t care. 

And that moves me to David and Exer’s treatment of Pamela. Exer, like with Jackson, gaslit the shit out of her. He bullied her, called her a witch, called her creepy and a stalker and a liar. And he did this even though he knew she was right. He let people bully this poor girl to the point where she’s a loner with no friends and is picked on every day. 

I’m not saying Exer isn’t a good character. He actually has one of my favorite character arcs! But quit putting David and Exer on pedestals. Quit acting like they didn’t have any of the bad shit Jackson’s did to them coming. 

Speaking of Jackson…:

 Holy shit. This fandom is ruthless to Jackson Smith. And for no gosh damn reason. 

“He’s mean to Exer and David!”

Did you miss the whole ‘Exer and David harassing him in the same way they did to Pamela’ thing? They literally ruined all of his friendships and his social status. Jackson was just the new kid trying to fit in and they never gave him that chance. 

“He’s so emo and cringe!”

He is literally so depressed that he has to go to therapy. Exer and David bullied him so he is constantly guarded and has serious trust issues since they were his friends. 

“He’s using the diary to control Exer’s life and ruin it!”

Season 3 premier shows otherwise. He’s only testing out the diary to see what it can do. You telling me that if you didn’t have a magical diary that can control the universe centered around someone, you wouldn’t test it out? Don’t you lie to me. And he hasn’t even done anything horrible. In fact, he uses the diary as a way to try and help Exer and David after William kicked David out of the house. He may not like Exer, but he has good morals. He’s not going to let someone who is suffering be open to any harm. That’s why he used the diary to try and protect them both. And when it backfired, he decided to stop using the diary. He didn’t want anyone to get hurt or for anything bad to happen. 

“He beat up David!”

There we go again, putting Exer and David on pedestals. Guys, you’re blowing it way outta proportion. Jackson was in a fist fight with Exer, David tried to intervene and got kicked in the face. You know how people tell you don’t try to stop two dogs fighting unless you want to get bit? That’s what happened here. 

Jackson is literally just a traumatized kid. He lost his mom at a young age g age and moved to a new place and was hoping to make some new friends. His ‘friends’ immediately turn their backs on him and harass him. He learns one of them is behind everything that caused this? Ya, don’t tell me you wouldn’t be fucking pissed either. 

We are the audience. We have more insight to these character’s mind and situations than Jackson does. Put yourself into his perspective.

“Because of instead of running away from the truth, Thomas is now hurtling towards it at 70 miles per hour. He knows they still have a few weeks before graduation, but in Thomas’ mind, he’s bringing Newt straight to the airport. He feels hyper aware of every plane passing overhead, the rumbling drumming through his chest.“

“He told me he looked for you,” Teresa reveals. Brenda’s eyes snap to hers, alive and awake. “For years, apparently. But he never found you.”

Brenda pauses, taking in the words. Her face cycles through a range of emotions; sentiment to sadness to disbelief, settling on dull anger. She lets out a breath.

“Yeah, well, now he never will,” she snaps, the words tired and hungry.

3. Kenopsia

“No no no, please,” Thomas begs, searching in the emptiness of Newt’s eyes. “Please, stop. He hates when you do this.”

4. These Silent December Nights

[Newt] loved the glow of the lights in the night, dangling from garage doors or hanging from store windows. Some nights, when he wasn’t working or with Thomas, he would walk down the local plaza and stand in front of them, squinting and blurring his eyes on purpose, watching the lights simplify into warm orbs of color. He imagines himself melting into them, letting all of his troubles slip away.

“She’s gonna be here soon,” Brenda said 18 minutes later. “I need to act casual.”

“That’s an oxymoron,” Thomas commented.

“Shut up. Just...act like we’re not waiting for her to show up.”

The cashier notices the stuffed animal in Newt’s arms. He smiles.

“That’s cute. You win that for your boyfriend? I’m jealous.”

Newt’s face burns red. What is going on? Are we in a gay arcade? Do those exist?

There’s a slight pause before Thomas speaks again.

“How do you always do that?”

“Do what?” Newt asks.

“Make the world right again. Stop the earth from spinning. And then make it spin, but in a good way.”

Should I text him? [Newt] thought to himself as the carriage passed along the sunset. When? And what would I even say? ‘Hi, it’s that cute British kid who doesn’t know how to throw darts’? I’ll seem like an idiot!

The museum physically is laid out quite simply but the pace and path at which they meander makes it feel more like a labyrinth. And at the middle of it all lies the two of them, far removed from not just outside the building, but the entire planet, the entire galaxy. Here, they orbit at their own pace, rarely anyone else passing them by. 

Kirk doesn’t mind being lost. He’d float away into the cosmos if it meant he never left Spock’s side.

Situation (DH) Xion's life at home & school isn't that great. At school, she is constantly being harassed & bullied at school by a girl named Katrina. The teachers watch & don't do anything about it & Xion is too afraid to stand up for herself. At home, her parents just had a new baby & all their focus is on the new baby & Xion feels alone. On top of that, her best friend Axel is acting very cold towards her. Xion feels worthless & to cope she inflicts injuries on herself.

UPDATE: When Xion gets bullied by Katrina to the point of Katrina punching Xion, Kairi flips & defends Xion by getting into a fight with her. After Kairi & Katrina's fight, Katrina leaves Xion alone, much to Xion's relief. While away in Hollywood, Roxas & Xion have too much to drink one night & end up sleeping together. Xion feels conflicted about the situation & avoids conversing with Roxas about it. Kairi convinces Xion to give her relationship with Roxas a chance or she might always be confused about their relationship. On the last day of their trip, Xion tells Roxas she wants to be with him.

Situation (HU) During the 3 year time gap, Roxas learns of Xion's self-injurious behavior. He convinces her to start going to therapy & Xion agrees. She hasn't injured herself since, but throughout the passed year, Xion notices Roxas pulling away from her. They start to fight a lot, & it's really because Xion is realizing Roxas is still in love with Namine. Xion decides to break up with Roxas & supports him in his relationship with Namine. Shortly after Roxas & Namine get together, she & Riku kiss one night & sleep together. They then begin dating with both Roxas & Namine's support. Months go by & after a camping trip, Xion ends up pregnant with Riku's baby. She & Riku sit with their thoughts on the matter & Riku approaches Xion telling her, he loves her & wants to keep the baby, & they decide to keep it.

The Nancy Drew Villains: The Good, the Bad, and the Iconic

So here’s the thing, I feel like there are a lot of lame and mediocre villains, but there are also some really good villains and some iconic ones. To quote Megamind, the difference between being a villain and being a super-villain is in the presentation. So I will be going through the villains and organizing them, by who is lame, who makes for a good villain, and who has the aesthetic and presentation down pat. 

spoilers for every game of course. 

Mitch/Uncle Steve??: Lame. Boring. Where is the villainy? Where is the skill? Mitch wasn’t even around and Uncle Steve was sus as heck. Also Mitch in the remastered literally called and threatened Nancy with his own phone number. Props for the boiler room incident, but thats all you get buddy, you literally murdered a teenager. Like an annoying one but still. 

Dwayne Powers: Iconic. Listen. This dude is horrible and honestly really dumb but like the drama??? the presentation??? The letters, the end speech, honestly iconic and some of HeR’s best villain work however RAN was really dumb and very racist so we’re just. yeah. Dwayne you get negative points for that. 

Louis: who is he again 

no presentation, not even a good plan. He barely did anything. Worse than Mitch and Steve. 

Lisa: Not the brightest, her voice is annoying and like. I just don’t care. Lame

Joseph: Listen. He has zero presentation and also messed up but like is legit terrifying to me and him pretending to help us the whole time only to be the bad guy like w o w. Left me shook. Not a super villain but one of the top. 

sigh Taylor: no presentation. The cool red hand was Henrik so really Henrik deserves this one also pretty sure Taylor murdered an elderly couple and gave Nancy like 20% of her trauma by locking her in the monolith. I mean that was pretty evil. So maybe like a point for being extra evil. But yeah. idk. 

Emily: I mean............... the dogs, complicated but dedicated. But like she didn’t even own it c’mon girl. Rock owning four hellhounds or move over. 

Eliot: Honestly the plan was kinda great....but you had legit not a good reason to murder Nancy. Like i feel you still could have gotten an okay sentence but you tried to murder her like three times. No. 

Andy: I mean. He had a tight racket going, and was like technically the boss man but like did you see that guy? He ran a whale museum all alone. Like whales are rad but that’s just sad my dude. And for a self-proclaimed whale lover you treated that whale like crap, so negative points. Solid plan, but I’m not putting you on the good villain list because your face bothers me. 

Shorty: Legit terrifying and I hate him but like idk i dug the horse plot and hiding out in the ghost town? Great. He’s not a super villain, but like, he’s a good villain. 

jane: Iconic. Phenomenal. WOw. Legit terrifying, insanely smart, and her presentation, aesthetic, vibe? immaculate. Truly a super villain at the wee age of twelve like wowwww. 

Jane/Marion: Listen. Quite the racket she had going. Like I am legit impressed. Maybe not the best actress but she did great. Not a super villain but def a good one. 

Lori: I love this game but Lori sweetie why. Why. Like she’s an interesting character but not a good villain.

Minette: I wanted to write her off because like....it wasn’t even her idea but yakno, points for presentation that mask and the end fight ridiculous as it was, was indeed iconic. 

Big Island Mike/Pua: Mike is iconic but not for his villainy, but however I will put him in the iconic category because that’s just what he is. 

Yanni: Iconic, no I will not be taking criticism. 

Renee: Legit terrifying to me.......jury still out though if she’s a super-villain? I think just a good villain but yeah. 

Helena: Iconic. She even has a super-villain name anddddd created an art theft ring like WOW. And Nico deserves to be there too because that mask and costume was his choice and I am very impressed.

Fiona: doesn’t count but honestly props for being iconic with the hair and jet pack. I mean. She was pretty freaky. 

Corine: Iconic, wonderful presentation, actual plan was worse than the presentation but still, an icon. Also a super villain name like pop off Corine. 

Scott: No. He was a hot mess and honestly get this man some therapy.

Rentaro: hm. I am conflicted. Motivation sucked. Presentation, amazing. But like....not actually a solid villain??? Idk. Just so... upsetting. Negative points for being a dick. 

Anja: Again, not the best plan, but revenge? Iconic. The monster? Iconic. Her vow of revenge? Love to see it. Definitely a super villain. 

Brenda: Good villain but not a super villain. Zero presentation and like what is that look girl. Just no. 

Abdullah: Highkey iconic. Homie thought he was actually Rameses and owned that ish. Good and iconic villain.

Victor: Annoying. Kinda hated him but genuinly terrifying and also murder by tesla coil, like that’s pretty hardcore my guy wow. And I know everyone saw it coming except me but having him show up and then feeling trapped in there with him was really awesome and scary. Super villain level dude, congrats. 

Clara: Hm. I mean she’s pretty evil but really no presentation. I feel like she feels very real? Definitely a good villain  but not a super one.

Ewan: YOU HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!!! YOU WERE A SPY VILLAIN!! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO LAME

Xenia/Thanos: Wow this whole plot, villain reveal, Xenia’s speech, her mind, her brilliance, the costumes, the presentation, the plot, everything. Amazing. Iconic, truly super villain levels.

It’s just another Tuesday. You’ve been yelled at by your boss over something out of your control, spilled hot coffee on yourself on your break, and had an irate client holler at you over the phone until you were so on edge that you burst into tears at your desk for a good ten minutes after hanging up. 

It’s been like this for the last three years of your life: a day-to-day agony of getting up and going to work only to get berated and abused by your employer over the slightest mishap. 

Finally, you’re allowed to go home. Charlie, your roommate, is in the living room when you get there, and she notices your red-rimmed eyes.

“Rough day?” she asks sympathetically. 

“He was worse,” you groan, kicking off your heels and slumping down on the couch. “I made one little mistake with scheduling a client for the bank merger and he just… I’m surprised I walked away with my job.”

Charlie rolls her eyes. “Why do you still work for him?”

“I need the money,” you sniff, “since Caleb and I broke up, I have to pay my bills in full, not splitting everything evenly. Plus, if I get a promotion I don’t have to work as his secretary.”

“Ah.” She’s silent for a long while. “I might be able to help.”

“Really?”

“There’s this guy that my friend Brenda knows,” she gets up and goes to her purse, “he’s a therapist.”

“Charlie, I don't need therapy.”

“You’re stressed to hell, Y/N,” she says, “you come home crying every other day and you’ve been having the worst anxiety attacks since Caleb dumped you. You don’t even try to meet other people, that’s how bad it is.” She rummages in the front pocket before pulling out a dog-eared business card. You accept it when she holds it out and glance at the black lettering on the front.

         SAM WINCHESTER - SEXUAL THERAPIST

“Sexual therapist?” you raise your eyebrows, “what the hell does that mean?”

“Look, all I know is Brenda says he’s amazing,” she grins, “and his costs are lower than regular therapists. She’s gone there just to talk, get stuff off her chest, get advice… but also what he does physically is supposedly incredible.”

“Physically?” Shaking your head, you set the card down on the coffee table. “I’m not sure I’m ready.”

“Oh, it’s not a requirement,” Charlie covers, “it’s just an option for his clients. C’mon, make an appointment, at least.”

You shrug. “I don’t know… I’m just gonna take a shower and go to bed early.”

“Okay.” Charlie’s face falls slightly, but she shakes it off. “Sleep well, Y/N.”

That night, long after Charlie’s fallen asleep and you’ve been struggling to even close your eyes, you pull your laptop out from underneath the bed and type in a Google search for Sam’s name. He’s got a website that looks extremely professional considering what he does. No alluring or inappropriate photos of women, ads for self-produced medications for bigger dicks or wetter pussies… it looks like a normal website. 

There’s a headshot of him in the center of the home page, along with a paragraph of his biography. 

He’s gorgeous; shiny brown hair curling around the middle of his neck, eyes that sparkle a dazzling combination of green and blue and gold, pink lips that look positively sinful, a decent dusting of stubble across his jaw...

...Fuck, you’d meet up with this man just to see him in person. 

His slogan shines in a light type font on the header of the page.

     FEEL GOOD.

Within minutes there are multiple tabs open on your computer; YouTube links to two TED talks he’s given in the last couple of years, a full biography including his education at various universities and internships at larger sexual-health facilities around the United States, and most importantly, his philosophies.

You’ve never encountered a more female-positive man in your life. 

Sam focuses on all aspects of human sexuality and health, but his primary specialty is sexual therapy in women. There are numerous testimonies from past female clients, many citing him as a “quick learner” and “perfect listener” to everything from sexual desires to the most basic aspects of mental health. He’s helped trauma survivors, PTSD-ridden veterans, even just women who want something more than what the average male is capable of offering them.  

Clicking on one of his TED talks titled Sex and Violence: Using Pleasure to Overcome Trauma and lower the volume to where you can just barely hear his voice. He’s surprisingly comfortable onstage, pacing slowly back and forth as he engages with his audience.

“...there’s more to overcoming trauma and anxieties than we think,” he’s saying, pressing the tips of his fingers together, “when our mind is triggered, we automatically move towards the easiest temporary cures, prescriptions and harsh medical methods to force it back into submission. Granted, in some cases, prescriptions are needed and are useful. However, my studies have found that women who have suffered a trauma are more likely to regain full control of their minds and bodies through the use of self-pleasure or engaging a partner in sexual activities that focus primarily on them, where they are in complete control.”

You watch him talk, completely captivated by the way he talks and moves. Several women in the audience are watching him with hungry eyes. The entire talk lasts for thirty-five minutes, and when it’s over, you find yourself entranced. 

Maybe this guy can help.

After two days of mulling it over, Charlie finally convinces you to make an appointment. You lock yourself in your car after work and dial the number on the front of the card. It rings four times before a woman’s voice answers.

“Winchester Therapy Services, this is Ruby, how can I help you?”

“H-hi,” you stammer, chest going suddenly tight, “I, uh, my friend gave me your card and I was, uh… I was wondering if I could make an appointment with you.”

“Of course, give me one moment.” You hear papers shuffling and then the dull click of a pen on the other end of the line. “We have openings this Friday and Saturday at four o’clock in the afternoon.”

You nod even though the woman on the other end of the line can’t see you. “Saturday works.”

“Perfect. May I have your name and phone number, please?”

“Y/N L/N,” you supply before rattling off your phone number. 

“Great. I’ll be giving you a call to confirm your appointment on Friday.”

“Okay.” You swallow thickly. “Thank you.”

“Have a great day, Y/N.”

What are you the most proud of?

The animal sanctuary is the first thing that comes to mind. It was just... such a dream I had. The most unattainable dream. I wanted to live in New York City and start my own life on my own terms, and I did that. It’s not... I don’t have a huge glamorous life, you know, but... it’s mine. 

What are you the most ashamed of?

I’m not ashamed, per se, but I’m not exactly proud of how long I stayed in... what turned out to be a pretty toxic relationship. I knew I was being cheated on, but I didn’t know that I deserved better than that. I guess I am a bit ashamed of that.

If you could go back and change one decision in your life, what would it be?

I had a baby brother when I was about ten. Our parents didn’t take the best care of us, so I raised him as best I could on my own. When I was thirteen and he was about three, we found out he was deaf, so I made the decision that he needed parents who could take care of him. I got the government involved and we both became foster children, and I know it was the best thing to do, but I never saw him again. If I could do it over again, I’d make sure they kept us together.

What is your biggest dream in life?

I’ve achieved so many of my dreams, sometimes it’s hard to imagine anything else. But I... not to scare you off - promise not to run away, okay? - but I had my dream wedding, but not my dream marriage. Not even close. For a while I thought I didn’t want to be married again, but now I think it might be nice. If it were... the right person. You know?

What difference would it make in your life if you felt completely safe, accepted, and loved?

I don’t know if I would know... if someone loved me. I’ve thought before that someone did, but I’ve been wrong. People always say when you know you know, right? I guess that’s true, and I’ll know when I know. I suppose it would change... everything.

Do you think your parents did a good job raising you while you were growing up? Why or why not?

No, God, no. I don’t think they ever wanted to be parents. Elliot and I - that’s my brother’s name, Elliot - were not planned. They did love us, I think, but it was the same way they loved each other, and the world, just... fleeting. They were always running from something, and sometimes they took me with them when they shouldn’t have, and sometimes they left me behind when they shouldn’t have. I was raised by books and my blind grandmother, but mostly by myself. I think I did a good job. I had a good model of how not to be, anyway.

What's one thing that you wish people understood about you?

Sometimes people see that I’m kind and they’ll try to take advantage of that. It used to work. Because putting out the image that I’m a kind, sweet, understanding person took precedence over my own self-worth? I wouldn’t stand up for myself for fear of being seen as a bitch. But I work really hard at being kind. I’m naturally a really angry person, and it’s taken a lot of therapy and meditation for me to push that aside and empathize. Does that make me sound crazy? I don’t know, I just... the answer to the question I guess is that I wish people understood that I am not a doormat, I’m just choosing to be kind because that’s who I want to be.

What is your biggest flaw?

I think I might be too guarded. Since my divorce I’ve been very... distrustful. I’m trying to stop doing that. I want to be more trusting, and let someone in. Like... now, kind of.

What event in your life has shaped you most as a person, and how did it do so?

When they took Elliot away. That changed everything. I probably would have given up on school to raise him, and we both would have struggled enormously, so I know it was for the best. But losing him entirely gave me such a... passion and drive. I wanted to be the best person I could be for him. So that he might be proud of me if he ever found me again. I changed my name for him. Did I ever tell you that’s why I’ve got ‘Elliot’ tattooed? I changed my name again when I got married and it just felt like such a betrayal to him to give it up.

Have you ever treated a person in a way that you regret?

And related to that: What would you do differently if given a chance?

Oh, yeah. I think everyone has. I had a boyfriend in high school who I didn’t love at all. He was a distraction from my pain. He didn’t love me either, but he didn’t deserve a lot of the anger I took out on him.

Do you think it's possible for men and women to be "just friends?"

Of course. Not everyone wants to sleep together, sometimes a friendship is even better than a love story anyway. 

Would you rather be rich and lonely or financially destitute with lots of great family and friends? Why?

Well, I can’t say I’ve been in either situation. I’ve been destitute and lonely, that was a completely terrible time. And now I’m doing well financially, and I have lovely friends, and I’ve got my brother back, and I’m on a date with the most beautiful man in the world. But if I had to choose, I would choose to have all the people in my life and I’d give up the money. In a heartbeat.

Tell me about something you did when you were drunk that you've never confessed to anyone.

I convinced an entire group of strangers in a pub that I was Russian. I did a terrible accent the whole night, so apparently they were very drunk too, to believe it. One of them still texts me sometimes and I feel the need to keep up the charade for some reason. I live in fear that one of them will come into the clinic or the shelter.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

 I’d be taller. Don’t laugh, I’m serious. I’m extremely small.

If you knew you would die tomorrow, how would you spend today?

Like this... with you... here. Maybe my dogs would be here, can we bring my dogs along next time?

Are you truly happy?

And why or why not?

I am. I love my job, even when it’s heartbreaking. I love my little house, I love this city. I love my friends. I love my dogs. I’m not happy all the time, every day, I do have moments of anxiety and sadness and regret, but... overall, yeah. I would say life is good.

Have you ever been in love?

And how do you know? What was it like for you?

Yes. Even after everything, I still maintain that I was in love. I just wasn’t loved back. I know I loved him because I would have done anything for him. I thought maybe he just needed some space and he’d come back to me. My idea of love was wrong, but it was still love, I think.

When you're home alone, and nobody else is around, how do you like to spend your time?

I dance in my underwear and I talk to my dogs. I also like to watch ridiculous reality shows like The Bachelor and Big Brother. It’s a problem. Is that a deal breaker?

What do you want people to say at your funeral?

That I was kind. That I made people feel important and loved, and that I made them smile. 

If you could have a conversation with anyone living or dead, who would it be and why?

It would be with this cute guy I’ve been fancying for a little while. His name’s Tony and he’s a tattoo artist and he barely talks at all, so I’d like to loosen him up with a bit of wine and a cityscape and get to know him.

Do you think you're a genuinely good person?

And why or why not?

Oh, I don’t know about that. I don’t think anyone is either good or bad. I think we are what we repeatedly do. Intentions also matter. It’s complicated. I try to put good out into the world, that’s all I’ll say.

How did you choose your current profession?

Are you happy with your job? Would you rather be doing something different?

My grandmother had a little greenhouse where she would take injured animals from the woods by her house. She taught me how to treat them kindly and make sure they weren’t afraid. I’ve applied what I learned in that little greenhouse to my entire life. 

If money were not an issue, how would you spend your time each day?

I would still have the shelter. I might still work at the clinic too, actually, maybe just fewer hours. I would spend more time with the people I care about. I would read every book I could get my hands on. I’d travel all over. I’d pick apples and make pies from them and just walk barefoot in the grass and feel the wind in my hair. The little things, you know?

Tell me about your political leanings.

Have they changed? How were they developed or influenced?

Oh, here’s something you might not know about me, I am technically not a US citizen. So I can’t vote. I do have opinions, though, mostly left-leaning, equality-centred opinions. I didn’t know anything about politics at all growing up, except for whatever war my parents were protesting at any given time, so I kind of had to teach myself that. That, and everything else I know.

What's one thing that you do on a regular basis that you hate doing, but nobody knows that you despise doing it?

Well, I think it’s probably the same as anyone who works with clients or customers or patients or humans in general. Sometimes people are ridiculous or mean or something, and you can’t tell them so. It’s very difficult sometimes not to say “Your budgie does not need to be on a gluten free diet, Brenda, you’re just an idiot!”

- first of all...if the hat stuff was filmed post holiday cause it was hiding his horrifying haircut, does that mean they just filmed stuff out of order to account for their holidays and we don’t have to then worry about a big break? hmm...

- But I’m glad Liv passed all her exams and I’m glad both her brothers were there to celebrate with her. I’m super disappointed she decided she wanted shoes over a PUPPY! A PUPPY Liv! Really! Come on! Aaron is going to need Dogbert after Robert leaves. Why would you deny him that? I can’t believe they bothered to remember about the dog only to take it away from me though. How cruel. 

- Also...all the positivity about Robert’s case just makes me sad since I know it’s not going to go well. 

- Anyway...the Tate stuff is so boring. I REALLY hope Al livens up Home Farm a bit because it is painfully dull right now. I’m with everyone else, I do not understand Jamie and Andrea as a couple. I don’t get what they were thinking bothering to make Andrea and Millie a secret. I don’t understand lumbering a young single guy in the village with a wife and a kid. I don’t understand that weird bit of drama in having Andrea working for Graham when their relationship started because where did that even go? Nowhere. It’s just really confusing and they barely even interact with the rest of the village these days. It’s strange. Kim is still the only character that even remotely works and only sometimes. 

- Please somebody explain to me if Rhona really is repeatedly breaking into Home Farm to move chess pieces in this game with Graham. Like...what!??! I’m still confused. Why is this a thing? Why does no one notice? I mean I know Home Farm notoriously has terrible security...but still???!?!

- Thankfully the Nate stuff was kept to a minimum today. That or my brain short circuited after the weird kitchen grope and the pinky touch that made me want to die and then I just blocked the rest of it out. Blech. Also, does she really think he cares for Amy. That relationship is built on less than this affair is. 

- At least all these Butler’s Farm scenes mean we get to see lots of Isaac. He’s adorable. 

- So...I like the whole Charity vs Brenda thing. It’s great. But...what was going on with the beer? Was it affected by the dry rot or something? and that’s why they were getting extra messed up? Or was it just warm? I’m confused. Still...it’s actually an entertaining little rivalry and exactly the kind of thing I love going on in the village. 

- Kerry and Amy helping with the funeral is...wow. I can’t wait till Tracy just murders Kerry in revenge. She deserves to. 

- It is super weird that Charity is running around doing the pub stuff while Vanessa is planning funerals and they barely talk. That scene where she walked up to Charity and started talking about the funeral...I was like ‘wait...why are they interacting...oooh right...they’re engaged...I think’. 

- Jessie apologizing was super weird and kind of uncomfortable and way too late. But then, I guess since they were revisiting the Maya stuff it made sense. But it was still strange. 

- That said, I thought the Jacob scenes were really good today. I didn’t know what that Priya spoiler had been referring to before, but I thought that was actually really good direction to take. To show how skewed his mind has become in relation to women, especially older women being nice to him. It was quite brilliant actually. And I liked the way they had Priya go straight to David and Leyla and how Jacob told Liv and she made him go talk to them because she could tell it wasn’t what he thought. And I liked that they had David, Leyla and Priya walk him through his thought process. They were so close to getting through to him. I hope it has at least started the ball rolling and they won’t drop this for long because I don’t want it to lose momentum again. That said, David needs to stop giving up on him. You went to therapy, maybe give that a try for Jacob. At least consider it. They’re killing me with all this. I just hope he gets to realize what Maya was sooner rather than later at this point.

I’m going to be afk for almost all of this weekend. I’ll have scheduled posts but that’s it. I’ll be reachable on Twitter (simonjadis) of course. I wanted to explain why.

My grandmother is one of the most important people in my life. During my childhood, I always lived close to her -- when I was preschool age, my mom and I even lived with her for a year during my mother’s divorce.

She was born on a farm in what was then rural North Carolina in 1930. How rural? The doctor made a house call and, instead of charging money for her delivery, instead asked for a calf “he’d had his eye on” as payment.

She and my grandfather, Herb Harward, had five children and eight grandchildren. Grandaddy passed away in 2007, but Grandmama now has a total of 4 great-grandchildren. She is 89.

There’s so much that I could write about her. I’ve known her all my life, but since my aunt passed away in 2014 (and she was living alone for the first time in her life), I’ve called and spoken to her every day. We’ve always had an incredibly close bond.

I got my sense of smell from her, but not her sense of hearing. My grandfather used to compliment her on both, saying: “If she could only run, she’d make a hell of a dog.”

If you’ve ever watched The Closer, know that Brenda Lee Johnson’s parents on that show are so eerily similar to my grandmother and grandfather and their dynamic that if it turned out that they were somehow based on them, I would not be surprised. Even the character’s names sound like someone tried to slightly tweak the real names. It doesn’t help that they named their firstborn “Brenda.”

In 2011, when Chaz Bono appeared on Dancing With The Stars, Grandmama (who loved that show) expressed her disgust over the awful backlash that he received for being transgender. I wouldn’t really call Grandmama “woke” by any means, but she couldn’t imagine why people would give him a hard time for being himself, “because that’s nobody’s business!”

She did, on a number of occasions over the years, accidentally say “transcendent” instead of transgender. No complaints here.

Grandmama was a Republican -- decidedly past tense. In 2012, she confided to my mother that she had voted for Obama. To put that in context, she was raised in a family so Baptist that she had to sneak around in order to go dancing with other teens in the ‘40s.

In 2014, my Grandmother took that even further, voting almost straight-ticket for Democrats. My mom and I took her to her polling station.

Here is grandmama in 2015. The photo to the left shows her wearing a pair of (my) slippers, which are a little too large for her. The photo to the right shows her either wearing my snuggie or donning her Mythic Dawn garb to go assassinate Uriel Septim VII. Either way, adorbs.

In 2016, everything about Trump chilled her to her bones. She was so excited to vote for Hillary, and that’s just what she did. Like most people in the country, she was mortified by the election’s results. She and I discussed politics, history, and the news constantly. We both used our sense of humor to cope with the nightmare that the world has become.

I don’t know whom she might support in the Primaries, though I will say that she has more than once brought up liking “that woman with a plan for everything.” I like Elizabeth Warren, too.

Unfortunately, during the first half of July of this year, Grandmama learned that she had thyroid cancer. She’s had strokes, heart attacks, open heart surgery, and is a breast cancer survivor.

This time looks different.

On Monday, my mother called me in the morning to let me know that she’d finally learned the diagnosis -- Grandmama didn’t want anyone to know at first. Even I, who spoke to her every day, didn’t get a direct answer for weeks. There are no good cancers to get, but anaplstic thyroid cancer is one of the worst. It appears that it has already spread beyond control.

There was a plan that she would receive immunotherapy (which looked promising in preliminary tests) and targeted radiation therapy. These were intended to improve her quality of life by preventing the tumor from cutting off her airway.

Today, Friday, my mom called to let me know that the hospital has determined that the radiation would be more likely to simply kill my grandmother than help. She’s not sure if Grandmama will be going back home or not. The plan was for me to visit next weekend, but it’s not clear if that is still viable or not.

So I’m heading out to see her this weekend. I am ... devastated.

where my brenderesa girlies at?! this is an 11k fic where brenda is a new ghost that teresa accidentally summons while working on a photo restoration for thomas. i was rereading parts of this yesterday and i was like you know this kind of goes off. not to toot my own horn but i like it. despite the fact that brenda is a ghost i don’t actually think it’s that sad. i’m hoping i can expand the universe of this fic one day but we shall see!

if you weren’t in the discord or missed when i posted this, you might have seen me reblog things about a “torture labyrinth” or pictures of liminal spaces with the tag “kenopsia” and have no idea what i’m talking about. essentially i had this idea to make a fic about liminal spaces, passed out, and woke up with 28k written. newtmas. maze runner parallels where thomas wakes up mid-run in a liminal space with no memories and finds newt who is also trapped. if you’ve ever seen “eternal sunshine of the spotless mind” it’s sort of like that. i know it’s weird but please give it a shot.

On Tuesdays, young Delilah Banner comes home demanding father’s specialty meatloaf. Thor always presents it with pride, and Bruce never lets on that he feeds his piece to the dog.

On Wednesdays, Delilah’s Dada likes to cook various foods he learned about from his travels. Sometimes she likes it, and sometimes Bruce has to stick some frozen fries in the oven because she refuses to eat the traditional pig stomach stew, but she always learns something new about a different culture, and Thor exults Bruce’s culinary talents even on the worst days.

Friday’s are Delilah’s favorite day of the week though. Her Dada will bring her Uncles Steve and Tony home with him after a day of work downtown. They always bring a pizza or Burger King or whatever other fast foods are on the way home from the Tower.

“Uncle Stevie!” Delilah squeals when they meet her where the bus drops her off. She takes a running start and leaps into his arm. She waves happily to the other first graders as Steve carries her off to the Banner house. Bruce follows nervously after, a soft smile hidden under his bowed head.

When the trio storms the front door, Tony gives Delilah a noogie and a kiss on the cheek. Everybody pretends to ignore the matching kiss on the cheek he gives Steve, too.

“What’s for dinner, father?” Delilah demands as she bounds up to Thor in the kitchen.

Every week he makes the same lame joke, “You’re expecting food? When I was a kid we had to fight for our food! I should go make you tackle your Dada, see who wins, huh?”

The joke still goes over her head, but she doesn’t dwell on it anymore, just toddles on the balls of her feet and peers over the skyscraper-tall granite counter.

The five of them sit at the kitchen table with their fast food portioned out on ceramic plates, glasses full of Bruce’s favorite exotic juices. Tonight’s dinner features Kentucky Fried Chicken. Delilah sits excitedly on her knees in her chair, waiting for Uncle Tony and Bruce to find their way to the dinner table.

Steve turns his napkin into an origami bird for her in the meantime, and she crushes it minutely in her clumsy hands as she laughs. He smiles brightly down at her, a gentle little person-sized Hurricane.

Tony and Bruce finally make it to the dinner table. Their conversation is suspended mid-ramble, some complex physics equation on the tips of their tongue, and Tony grins, “Smells like we’re eating right tonight- right, Lila?”

Only her beloved Uncle Tony’s ever been allowed to call her Lila, a habit he managed to slip past her nickname-faring sensors after the continuous dazzling of science. Delilah certainly takes up after her dada, always easily distracted by Stark’s genius brain. Unfortunately, she’s seemed to adopted her other father’s ravenous appetite.

Delilah wields her fork and knife in her tiny hands like twin daggers, grinning innocently as the scientists meander into the room, “Hurry Up, Dada!” She says, pushing on the table excitedly, “I’m hungry!”

Tony feigns slow motion the rest of the way to his chair, and Bruce laughs, shaking his head nonetheless, “You washed your hands, right, girly?”

Delilah so much as rolls her eyes, “Of course, Dada. Can we eat now?”

“Dig in.”

Thor gives his daughter a big ol’ scoop of mashed potatoes, and she goades him into giving her extra gravy.

A hush falls over the five of them as they eat, Bruce and Tony interrupting the silence intermittently with science jargon that goes over the others’ heads (though in only a few years, Delilah will surely understand every word, she’s as smart as her dad).

“Delilah,” Steve says, taking a big gulp of Bruce’s papaya dragonfruit juice, “Did you learn anything at school today?”

Delilah screws her face up pensively, “We started reading a new book in read aloud, but I’ve already read it. My friend Mary is really excited to find out what happens next though, and I promised I wouldn’t tell her this time. I pinky promised.”

Steve’s confused, “But did you learn anything new?”

Delilah shakes her head, “Not really.”

Bruce and Thor share a look over the bucket of chicken. This has been an ongoing problem, Delilah’s smarter than her teachers are able to challenge her. They’ve been talking about it a lot lately, maybe setting something up with Tony or Peter Parker who’s been working with gifted kids in the city.

Suddenly, Delilah brightens, “Wait, Uncle Steve! I did learn something today!” Everybody at the table is surprised, hopeful, “Mary taught me how to play four scare at recess! Her cousin showed her how to play over the weekend. Now we can play when we’re outside, it’s really fun!”

Oh. Not what they were expecting, but at least it’s something.

Steve comes off as incredibly interested as Delilah explains all the rules in a very zigzag way, going back and forth and quoting all her friends. They all know there’s no way he’s actually interested, but he puts on a hell of a show for the sake of the second grader.

Mid-explanation about the rules of getting out in her new game, Delilah’s face falls and her thoughts trail off ubiquitously.

“What’re you thinking about?” Steve asked her softly. Thor and Bruce and Tony gnawed on their chicken legs and pretended not to be listening in.

“Brenda said something today,” Delilah reports, brows furrowed in thought, “And it was weird. I asked if they wanted to come to my house and play four square with me and she said that her mommy wouldn’t let her come here because they’re afraid of what might happen. What does that mean?”

Tony chokes on a piece of chicken, Bruce suddenly has to pick his fork up off the ground, and Thor’s ramrod still. Steve usually knows how to deal with Delilah like it’s nothing, but this time he looks to Thor and Bruce for guidance.

Their pasts haven’t ever come up, so as far as Delilah knows her dada has always worked with Uncle Tony and her father and Uncle Steve have always run off on bimonthly unexplained business trips.

“Delilah?” Bruce asks very slowly, “Do you know that your father and I would protect you at any cost? Your uncles, too?”

Delilah nods, still confused. Steve’s arms are crossed defiantly, poorly hiding the indignance he feels towards a certain ignorant mom.

“Well, some people don’t know that, honey,” Bruce continues solemnly, his voice soft.

“Why don’t they believe it, Dada?”

Bruce takes in an involuntary, sharp intake of breath, eyes dark as they sweep towards Thor whose big hands are twiddling anxiously on top of the table. That was the question they dreaded.

It’s not that they were never going to tell her. They were going to do it really, just when she was older and more capable of understanding the weight of what it meant to have two dads that moonlight as superheroes. Instead, they have to do it now. Thor shifts a hand over the back of Delilah’s chair as Bruce continues. Steve and Tony both look like they’re trying to make themselves invisible (an awkward feat for a Stark).

“You see, we- um- well, your father and I used to lead a very different life from this. Not bad necessarily, but more dangerous. We were very well known, and so your friend’s mom is probably just worried that something from our past might come back and hurt your friend.”

Delilah looks pensive again, “What did you do?”

“We were, um-“

“Superheros.” Steve finishes for him. It’s either out of pity, or he simply couldn’t sit by quietly anymore. Neither would surprise Bruce, but he’s just grateful he didn’t have to say it himself.

Delilah looks up at Thor with big eyes, “You too, father?”

“Yes, my little one,” Thor says, “I fought many villainous forces alongside your father and uncles.”

Slowly, she nods, “Okay, Dada. Can I have another piece of chicken?

Bruce watches her for a moment, decides she isn’t repressing that she’ll need therapy for later, and passes the chicken, “Sure, honey bun,” He says, hesitating with his arm stretched over the table, “You’re sure you’re fine?”

Delilah smiles, “I’m hungry, Dada.”

And just like that it’s over and done: the concern and anxiety they’ve felt since the moment Delilah first appeared in their lives, that loaded conversation is finished off by the appetite of a seven year old.

Tony taps his foot on the ceramic tile of the kitchen, pushing his chair back with his legs and holding his arms out magnanimously, “Good thing then,” He says, “Because Stevie and I brought pie!”

Delilah’s eyes light up, and Bruce and Thor share a relieved look over the buffet of fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Delilah skips after Uncle Tony to fetch the dessert. Everything is… okay.

BABYLON BERLIN - Ep 11 Notes

I talked to friend of the podcast Jen Last-name-redacted this past weekend, about other things too but a *significant* amount about Babylon Berlin, which will probably all be filtering in over the next several episodes. But notably for where I am at present, she told me that she straight up didn’t watch another episode after Episode 10 for like three weeks---“I was in mourning!”---and that’s relatable.

However, Jen also told me that the eleventh episode, this one, is in considerable portion a quasi comic reprieve in the form of a silent film-esque sequence with Gereon Rath and the queer photog being tossed around in an old timey plane, and science doesn’t yet know how many concepts I would find more appealing than that, but their best guess right now is ‘not many.’
