Stars Shine Bright with 20th-Anniversary Celebration at Racket on Thursday Night

Nostalgia tours aren’t a new concept, and it’s no surprise that the number of anniversary tours has surged in recent years due to the many influential albums released in the 2000s. A strong group of indie artists from Montreal came together under the Arts & Crafts label, founded by Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene. Other notable artists on this label included Feist and Stars. In 2004, the latter Canadian indie art-rock collective released their third — and arguably most acclaimed record — Set Yourself on Fire. Members Amy Millan, Torquil Campbell, Evan Cranley and Chris Seligman have extended their 20th-anniversary tour of this formative album into 2025, much to the delight of longtime fans. They kicked off the ongoing celebration at New York City’s Racket on Thursday night.

Opening track “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” signaled that the album would be played in order of the track list, and the crowd indulged in singing along to the chorus of “Live through this and you won't look back.” Applause welcomed “What I’m Trying to Say,” while Campbell chomped on a rose, laying the theatrics on thick. Milan shared how they were arrested in New York when Campbell reminded fans that the band was formed in this city. The tail end of this no-skip album felt strangely appropriate for the chaotic times that both the United States and Canada are experiencing. Wisely, Milan remarked that we are all doing the “small things,” like coming together to get through this day by day. Riotous claps rang out during “Soft Revolution” to punctuate the collective spirit.

After playing the last track on SYOF, the set continued with “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It,” from 2022’s From Capelton Hill. Fan-favorites “Take Me to the Riot,” from 2007’s In Our Bedroom After the War, and 2010’s “Dead Hearts” (The Five Ghosts) elicited raised fists. As if that weren’t enough, they returned with a two-song encore featuring “The Woods,” off their 2003 debut, Hearts, and the title track from 2014’s “No One Is Lost.” Although the world and its headlines are bleak, there was nothing but hope and camaraderie inside Racket. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

this is awesome and also so hard because i'm pretty terrible at keeping track of what's announced. so this is mostly speculative.

5. The Huntress and Holder of Hands has been threatening a record since spring of this year. They released singles which they SAID were part of a record but then have not announced a release date for the um. Record. So this is maybe blind optimism but I do hope it ends up happening in 2025

4. Pinkshift. No name or date yet but they're recording and I'd be shocked if it wasn't a 2025. This would be higher except I've now seen several of the songs live and they're straight up not very good. Many such cases unfortunately

3. Ekko Astral. Who among us is not clamoring for the release of the Capital Beltway concept album. I'm worried that it can't possibly live up to Pink Balloons and I'm worried about how the loss of Guinevere Tully and that other guy will affect its sound but I am still SO excited for it I really love those guys

2. JADE. Love all three singles love her crazy BBC live lounge cover performance love the energy she's bringing to the solo career she's made me genuinely excited about pop music again in a way I haven't been since...man, maybe since Little Mix's Glory Days came out? I <3 pop music I <3 Little Mix and it's really showing that she was the creative direction behind most of my most beloved aspects of Little Mix. POP GIRLIES FOREVER!

had the chance to have a meet-and-greet with Stars yesterday and gave them a copy of a drawing I made for the occasion! one of the copies was for me and they all signed it!!! 🌟🌟🌟

the fact that amy freaking millan was thrilled with it and torq was so impressed with it as well made the pain of having to finish this drawing in like two days and a half soooo worth it!!! life is good sometimes!! :)

My main reason for going to the Just Like Heaven fest was to see Metric, Broken Social Scene was just a plus. Never ever ever ever thought it would be like, the highlight of the festival for me. Seeing Amy fucking Millan make an appearance to sing 7/4 shoreline (AKA one of my ultimate faves from BSS) just made me go into fangirl mode soooooo hard. Holy fucking shit, what an incredible moment that I will never forget. And then seeing her and Emily Haines sing Anthems for a 17-year Old Girl together…………….I wanted to fucking faint. On top of getting to be at the festival with a lifelong friend, all the traveling BS that I had to go through to make it to this festival was so so so so worth it. I love music so damn much 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
