Signed "Iraqi Most Wanted" Deck Of Cards

During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States–led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council.

Of the fifty-two cards in this deck, thirty-seven have been signed by the individuals they depict while in captivity. These include: Ali Hasan Al-Majid, better known in the west as "Chemical Ali"; Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, and Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, an American-educated biochemist known as "Mrs. Anthrax" for her alleged role in Iraq's biological weapons program, and the only woman represented in the deck. Ammash's card describes her as a "WMD Scientist"; the back is inscribed: "Leadership? Yes - Scientist? Indeed - But WMD??!! By NO means. A truth that'll shine one day - By the grace of God not far away - Dr. Huda S. Ammash, Baghdad, Iraq". Ammash was later acquitted and released. One signer, former Oil Minister Amir Rashid Muhammad, has removed the symbols from the corner of his card, as gambling was an affront to his religious beliefs. The joker has been signed and inscribed by the man who collected the signatures, a member of the National Front of Iraqi Intellectuals.

Seven Deadly Sins’ less forgivable actions

"The Prophet, peace upon him, said: 'A dirham of riba which a man receives knowingly is worse than committing adultery thirty-six times.'"

"I don't care. He owes what he owes. I don't care if he starves. He should know better than to cross me." Rashid stands between two of his servants as they hold the starving man by the corner of the street, their daggers held to his throat. The pleading man cries, his hands held to plead for his life and his coin. He has a family to feed, he says. He has a wife and son, he says. Well, want to know who else has a wife and son?

Rashid does. Even though they have an estate of their own and plenty of food to eat, Rashid will not deny what is owed to him.

"I have given you many chances, and now you not only fail to give me what you owe, but you are undermining my authority in this town. If you will not give me what you owe in coin, then give me what you owe in-

"....Assad!"

Staring at his own baba from from the corner street is the young Assad al-Basir ibn Rashid, having run out from home after Father has been missing for so long. He was promised time to be with him, to learn his lessons. Lessons in how to be good. Lessons in how to be kind. What what was transpiring here in this alley... this not only went against everything he was taught. Everything he had known. In the name of good behavior, or the law. Of God.

And Rashid knows it. He sighs, holding up a hand to signal his men to withhold their swords. He approaches Assad, lowering himself to the boy. He places his hands onto his shoulders, telling him gently so that no one would hear but him: 

"Please let Baba work, ya ibni. I will be with you soon." Much to Assad's horror, Rashid simply guides the boy to the nearby stall, urging him to wait. He returns to the corner with not much more of a word....

...And the smell of iron within blood would Assad's nostrils for the first time in his life.

As it turns out, the lendee did have some money on him... for a single treat. This was hardly enough to pay off the entire debt, but it was enough to give Assad a pastry. With the deed done, Rashid lets his men from their work and returns to the streets with a pouch in hand. He then extends his free hand to the boy, a smile on his face as he is ready for a nice night on the town....

...and Assad reacts by jerking away.

"...Don't you act ungrateful for what I do for you, boy!" Rashid snaps back as he grips Assad's arm so hard, he almost bruised him. "We are going to enjoy a treat tonight, just as I promised you! Now don't give me that look and come with me!" He will not hear it. Not a word, not a sound on how haram his actions were. Rashid has done far, far more than kill a creditor for being unable to pay what he is owed. And Assad better be goddamned grateful.

Riordanverse.

Okay, I have a roster for a nice reasonable session taking off taking off sometime in the first couple Trials of Apollo books, the Triumvirate pushes a button they shouldn't have, with a roster featuring Seven+Nico, Reyna, Thalia, Will, and Meg. But if I do write this, I will not be writing the reasonable version. I will be writing the unreasonable version, including MC and KC.

In fact I already have a prophecy for the unreasonable version:

Twelve children of the wandering gods / Twelve touch two worlds despite the odds / Twelve their mortal life have ceded / Three games to win or all's defeated

But what comes of it after game's end / Will on the choices of the gods depend

That's right, three twelve-person sessions, because... reasons. --Because I kept wanting not to leave out various people and then had to keep things balanced, actually.

Whose fault is it? Interesting question. But somebody or somebodies did it on purpose. It was distributed as a fun and innocuous game on purpose. Utgard-Loki was almost certainly involved. Prometheus was almost certainly involved. But it wasn't just them.

I have quite a few notes on entry sequence, and people who were planning to play together but the game wouldn't allow them to connect because they're in different sessions, and people who were not planning to play together but ended up connected, and people who were supposed to be unavailable but weren't.

The sources report a seemingly straightforward succession, with the arrival of a woman on the throne depicted as a natural and common occurrence. Terken’s first political moves followed a similar pattern to those of the former Mongol empresses. According to Vassaf, she took control of the affairs of states and began to send gifts in order to gain recognition of her right to rule.”

“...Terken’s strong determination to secure her political position as regent of Kerman can be seen in the way she played her cards in the Ilkhanate political arena. The yarligh from Hulegu apparently left the army outside the queen’s control was assigned to her son-in-law by her eldest daughter Bibi Terken.

She contested the decision and ‘set out for the ordu [of Helegu], accompanied by the great men of Kerman. There she obtained a new yarligh entrusting all the affairs of the province, civil and military, to her’. Furthermore, she masterminded the political alliances between Kerman and the Mongol ulus of Iran, which marked the political development of the region in the thirteenth century.

She did this in a number of ways. First, she secured the marriage previously arranged by her husband between Sultan Hijaj and a daughter of the powerful amir Arghun Aqa (Beki Khatun), and it took place during an expedition of the amir in Georgia. The lady was brought to Kerman in 1264. Second, she made an important move when, some years later, she succeeded in marrying her daughter Padshah Khatun to Abaqa Ilkhan, who became the new ruler of Iran in 1265.

Her political affiliation to the Ilkhans went beyond marriage alliances: she mobilized the Kerman troops to aid Abaqa’s military expedition against the Chaghataid Khanate in 1271-2, putting Sultan Hijaj in command. This campaign had two consequences for Terken’s reign: (1) it honored with the military support of the Qutlughkhanids the marriage between the Ilkhan and Padshah Khatun; (2) the prestigious victory gave a now adolescent Hijaj the political momentum he needed to challenge Terken and try to seize control of the realm.”

“...It is mentioned that in a public meeting he recited the following verses to her: Young are your destiny and star, but old is your fortune; the one that is old should make way for the young.

Her son’s offensive words seem to have disturbed Turken to the point of finding her way to Abaqa’s ordo to ask for a second yarligh confirming her right to rule Kerman. According to Rashid al-Din, because of the marriage of her daughter to the Ilkhan, ‘she used to go to Court every two or three years and return loaded with honors.’

Despite the confirmation, tension between mother and son grew until in 1279-80 Hijaj finally made an attempt to take control of Kerman and remove his mother from power. He was unsuccessful and the young prince was forced into exile in Delhi, where he died more than ten years later.”
