I felt its attention shift in the feed.
(Imagine it staring meaningfully at me.) (It could stare all it wanted, I’m not apologizing.)

Fluffy
Ratthi watched with a little trepidation as Amena approached SecUnit with a hairbrush and a can of hairspray. He knew from experience how little it appreciated touch. It didn’t immediately jump away at the sight of her determined expression, which surprised him.
“Sit down,” she said. “I have an idea.” When SecUnit scoffed, she added, “Please?”
Ratthi watched in amazement as SecUnit huffed, then sat down on the floor in front of a chair. Amena sat down as well, and began to attack its hair with her brush. It flinched a little as she combed through stubborn knots, but eventually she tamed its normally messy hair into submission.
“Okay,” she said, her expression concentrated, “I’m going to try to style this. Maybe if we fluff your hair up, Leonide won’t recognize you.”
“You think so?” it asked, clearly skeptical. She nodded at the drone focused on her face.
“It’s better than nothing,” she said with a shrug. She grabbed her can of hairspray—Ratthi had to wonder where she’d found it—and spritzed its hair liberally. Then she combed it until it fluffed around SecUnit’s head like a halo. She stared at her work with a critical eye.
“What do you think?” she asked her drone. A second drone focused on SecUnit’s face.
“It’ll do,” it said after a moment. Amena rolled her eyes as it stood up.
“Thanks, Amena!” she said sarcastically. “That was nice of you!”
SecUnit glanced at her awkwardly, then left the room, passing Ratthi without comment. Ratthi grinned as Amena huffed.
“It really likes you, you know,” he said. “I don’t think it’d even let Mensah touch its hair.”
Amena snorted. Ratthi lifted his eyebrows and shook his head slightly.
“I know it seems rude, but that’s just how it is. Trust me. It likes you.”
Amena looked up, where a couple drones danced above her head. After a moment, she grinned at them, and waved. Ratthi nearly laughed as they bobbed in response.
“C’mon,” he said. “Let’s find out what everyone else is up to.”

Amena, Murderbot, and Violence
Thinking today about Amena and violence in The Murderbot Diaries.
Like, Amena is from Preservation, a planet whose murder rate is barely above that of an uninhabited planet, where finding an unexpected dead body is so shocking that they close the entire space station IMMEDIATELY. And the other characters from Preservation tend to...let's say look askance at Murderbot's murdering. There's Gurathin challenging whether Murderbot has the right to kill Mensah's captors or Thiago being really upset at the thought that Murderbot might have killed the raiders who were trying to kidnap and/or murder the survey crew. There's also the moment that Murderbot thinks about how it's never killed anyone directly in front of Ratthi, and how it wants to keep it that way, so that Ratthi will keep thinking the best of it.
And Amena was raised on this planet, and so far as I know hadn't really left up until the survey assignment in Network Effect, who suddenly finds herself kidnapped along with Murderbot. And Murderbot is losing it because it thinks ART is dead, and ends up ripping one of the Target's lungs out in front of Amena while messily murdering it.
And Amena's response is...shockingly chill? Like, I guess she's also in shock and scared and Murderbot is the only person on her side at the moment, but it's still an incredibly violent killing done right in front of her and she never really seems to blink at it. Later, the very second that Ras shoots Murderbot, Amena jumps onto his back and tries to choke him out. Like, that's her first and immediate reaction--and this is like 30 minutes after the "Murderbot rips someone's lungs out" thing.
And there is something touching about how "ride or die" Amena is with Murderbot even though she thinks it doesn't like her. And about how willing Amena is to deal with whatever is happening. How at the end of that day, when they've been in a space battle and kidnapped and Murderbot did some murdering and Ras died and Eletra was almost fried and Murderbot was having multiple emotional breakdowns...Amena is worried that Murderbot is mad because she didn't defend it enough when Ras & Eletra were being verbally mean. Like, THAT'S what she thinks might affect their relationship.
I don't know what I'm getting at, exactly, except that I think Amena is a fascinating character.
Things Amena gets upset about:
Murderbot interrupting her date with a predator
Murderbot forgetting to talk in stressful situations
Casual racism (bot-ism?) from Ras & Eletra
Murderbot & ART not talking
Things Amena does NOT get upset about
Murderbot doing the killing

re-reading network effect and jeez Amena and Ratthi are the biggest Murderbot/ART (platonic or otherwise) shippers of all of us. The bathroom scene for one, and all the times Amena played inbetween the two (omg the scene when MB is like 'I want to talk to ART alone' and Amena is like '...about your relationship???' and when she was explaining to ART how MB reacted to it's 'death' like come on) and towards the end when Ratthi is desperately trying to get MB to understand that ART threatened to kill a bunch of people for it and Thiago is like 'we don't really got to talk about this :/' and Ratthi just gets louder.
They are so personally invested in Murderbot and ART's ~~~'mutual administration assistance'~~.
#i personally mean platonically but no judgements for anyone else#the murderbot diaries#murderbot diaries#secunit#asshole research transport#ratthi#amena#tmbd#perihelion#network effect#murderbot#dupree

Balance
Prompt: Fine
Characters: Iris, Amena, Three, Murderbot
Warnings: none
Three reached out and, tongue unconsciously sticking slightly out of its mouth, carefully balanced a black bent bar over several intertwined others. The bars were all balanced on a nearly vertical straight bar with a small hook at the end. The carefully balanced bars tipped.
“Oooooh!” Amena said. “It’s gonna fall!”
Three’s hand didn’t waver. It shifted its approach, and leaned the bar against the others at a different angle. The gathered audience and players watched intently as it placed the bar down. The stack wobbled, but held.
“Oh, nice!” Iris said, clapping her hands. Three looked pleased. “I thought for sure it’d fall over.”
SecUnit grabbed the colored die. “My turn."
It rolled and the die landed on an orange square. It grabbed an orange bar from the pile in front of it.
“That’s the hardest shape,” Iris said. “Be careful, SecUnit.”
“I’ve got this,” it said, studying the game before it with the same intensity it usually reserved for media or mission security.
The game appeared simple—balance differently shaped and colored bars on each other until the contraption created fell—but it had both SecUnits fascinated. Amena and Iris also played, but had the disadvantage of shaky human hands. The SecUnits had simply turned off their act-like-a-human codes, which initially had annoyed the girls until they saw how focused both Units were. Amena had to hold back a giggle at SecUnit’s intense expression as it held the bar in various angles.
If you put it on the black and blue bars—
“Shut up, ART,” SecUnit said almost absentmindedly, still holding the bar in midair. It gently placed it across two other bars, notably not the blue and black bars, vertically. The crew oooo’ed as the structure somehow held.
“My turn,” Amena said. She rolled the die and picked up a red bar. She looked at the delicately balanced structure. “Ooof.”
“You can do it,” Iris encouraged. Amena’s hand shook slightly from adrenaline as she carefully placed her stick diagonally across three others. The balanced bars shifted, shook—
—and collapsed to the ground, eliciting a group groan. Three looked at the pile of bars in particular dismay.
“It’s fine, Three,” Amena said.
“Fine?”
“Yeah! Everyone loses sometimes.”
Three hesitated. “Then…the game is over?”
“Unless you want to play again,” Iris said. Both SecUnits’ eyes sparkled.
#I don't know the name of this game but my friends loved it#It's honestly a lot of fun and I think the SecUnits would have been very good at it#secunit 3#murderbot#the murderbot diaries#tmbd#murderbot drabbles#murderbot fanfic#asshole research transport#murderbot diaries#amena#amena murderbot diaries#iris murderbot diaries

Murderbot: No, Amena—I have less than zero desire to have holes punched through my ear-flesh so I can adorn them with shiny things, anyway—they’d get caught on…
Amena:

Murderbot: Okay, gimme that needle…
