Film Project Research – Film Diary #2
She Said dir. Maria Schrader
TW: Mentions of sexual assault and harassment
(Carey Mulligan btw <3)
This film follows the story of the two reporters Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) that uncovered Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual assault and harassment and started the #MeToo movement. The story in this film is far bigger than the one I am going to try and tell, however there are elements that I can definitely learn from.
The most impactful moments in the film are when survivors are telling their stories, and also when a real audio recording of an interaction between Harvey Weinstein and actor Ambra Battilana Gutierrez is used. In each of these sequences, none of the assault is shown or even heard. The shots are simply of the location the assaults took place in, along with some specifics parts of the set such as a half-eaten meal on a hotel table, or a bathrobe left on a bed (Weinstein infamously met a lot of assistants and actors in just his bathrobe before assaulting them). I found this to be an incredibly effective way of telling these stories visually without unnecessary triggering and demeaning content. A few shots were static and a few had a slow push-in. I felt the push-in worked best as it gave a sense of being slowly trapped as the frame got tighter.
In the current draft of Katie’s script, the main character Phoebe explains what has happened to her to her friend Jo. I think using a similar technique as in She Said could be effective in helping Phoebe tell her story without doubt that it did happen. By showing audiences the location, they are able to understand Phoebe’s point of view and feel that she is telling the truth. I would also want to see the actor playing Phoebe during this monologue as I feel it will be a very emotional and important performance. Ideally I can blend the two. Of course, Katie’s script may change but those are my thoughts for now!
On another note, I would highly encourage anyone who is not aware of how deep Harvey Weinstein’s rot reached to watch this film, or at least research it. I would recommend reading Chapter 10 of the book Women vs Hollywood: The Rise and Fall of Women in Film by Helen O’Hara (one of my favourite books and happy to lend to anyone wanting to read it)! To successfully change the industry into a more positive and accessible place, people need to first understand the past and current problems to prevent them from repeating.
Burden of Proof dir. Ivar Aase
TW: Mention of rape
youtube
A one-take short film about a woman confronting her abusive ex-boyfriend. We see the events take place from an aerial shot looking down at a bridge where the pair meet. She gives him his clothes back and he tries to coerce her into taking him back. She accuses him of rape and asks him to apologise. There is a small twist at the end which I won’t spoil for anyone that wants to watch!
The main learning from this is from the way the man denies what he has done in a very smooth non-chalant way until he becomes angry. He appears charming and likable until he isn’t. The character of Harry is in a somewhat similar situation that he has to try and talk himself out of. The body language of the two characters is interesting as it shifts as the film progresses. This is something I will need to consider in my work with the actors.
He’s The One dir. Jessie Kahnweiler
TW: Rape
In this short film, the main character Jess falls head over heels for a man. When they go to sleep, she notices a tattoo on his shoulder and realises that he is the man that raped her ten years before. In the morning she calls her best friend and struggles with her feelings towards him and the situation.
I am not sure how I feel about this film to be honest. It is an interesting idea but I don’t love the way it was executed. There is a flashback to the rape, which I think is filmed well and to be honest I am unsure how the filmmaker could have communicated what had happened without showing it as the audience needed to see it was the same man. It is unclear if the man recognises Jess and knows what he has done. There are some key lines of dialogue in the conversation Jess has with her friend that I thought were good, however I felt the jokey tone continuing to the end of the film didn’t quite work for me.
Why Didn’t You? – Podcast by Terri White
TW: Rape
I believe that listening to people with lived experience of sexual assault is an important part of my research. This podcast only began a few weeks ago and it is a platform for survivors to share their story. The title “Why Didn’t You” stems from the common questions survivors are faced with: why didn’t you run, why didn’t you report it at the time, why didn’t you break up with him, why didn’t you wear less revealing clothes etc. Listening to women’s stories has allowed me to think more about the psychological affects of sexual assault and means I am able to treat this story correctly.

She Said (2022)
Long time coming, many apologies! First of all, I absolutely loved this film, directed by Maria Schrader and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz based on a book by the same name by the two journalists that broke the original story about Harvey Weinstein in the New York Times which started the global #metoo movement and changed the game for reporting sexual assault int he workplace and in many other sectors across the world. This film watches the two protagonists Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Meghan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) played INCREDIBLY, face hurdle after hurdle in trying to get women across the world to go on record about their experiences, racing against the clock as news another paper has got wind of the story and against the legal powerhouse of the Weinstein business.
For a film where the story & the end result were already known, they did a great job of adding depth and tension to the story. One of the most impactful ways this was done was through the incredible score composed by Nicholas Britell, which heavily featured his cello-playing wife. The impact was immense, adding gravitas to the battle to seek the truth and the reality of what the survivors of assault were dealing with in the fallout in their personal lives, even before they had decided to go public with their news.
The haunting shot of a hotel corridor with real audio captured by Ambra Battilana Gutierrez of Weinstein trying to coax her into an assault, gathered as part of an Italian investigation is bone-chilling and adds a level of threat to the shots of the reporters in the workplace & enjoying time with their families. Another win for audio impact was rooted in the decision to not give any visual airtime to "Harvey" only seeing him right at the end and even then only from behind. This decision more importantly doesn't add to any trauma for sexual assault survivors by choosing not to show any aspects of assault too graphic in the actual film. It is a very dignified ending to the film that takes power away from Weinstein and delivers it to those brave reporters - Carey's face in the scene where she knows that they've got enough to publish the story about him is incredible acting, I felt everything with them.
One of the lasting impacts of this film for me is the importance o investigatory journalism in our so-called democratic countries. In a time where simultaneously governments are trying to restrict the rights of a free press in many countries including my own in the UK and a time where rich media & press owners are writing more pieces based on clickbait headlines rather than serious investigatory work, it's scary how much these publications have done shape society by holding governments and public business/figures to account and I worry about our ability to tell truth from tale without a free investigatory press.
Another huge takeaway for me is how difficult it is for women to tell their truth in the increased culture of misogyny we're experiencing today, which has only worsened since the time this took place. There's now an anti-#metoo movement, where a rising group of white cis men believe that all women are scheming, capitalising liars and that all that "woke" behaviour has gone far enough. To me, it's clear to me that no woman who came forward about Harvey Weinstein (& Trump, which was touched on at the start of the film), especially in the beginning has benefitted in any way from telling their truth. Their lives are ruined, their careers over and spend so much time living in fear and with the repercussions of what has been done to them and what they have to go through to tell their truth is nothing less than pure bravery. It's an increasingly difficult time to be a woman, and for me, this story was so relevant and needed - even as people deem this saga 'over/history'. It's beyond baffling that the world is experiencing a #metoo fatigue when stories like this just show the tip of the iceberg as to what behaviour and abuse are lurking in the undercurrent of society.
Another thing that was painfully familiar was the number of men in high-up positions that were happy to turn a blind eye to the behaviour and underestimate the damage they knew was being done because it wasn't in their interest to report it. Power, money and morality go hand in hand in our world, people are unwilling to get involved and stand up for what's right until the stakes become personally too damaging. It also amplifies the complexity of reporting and prosecuting sexual assault cases, it's one of those few crimes that often leaves no lasting injuries and very little proof of non-consent. In a case of he-said, she-said it's very hard to find a man of resource & wealth guilty of any crime and if a case has a chance of being won the victim often has their lives turned upside down to do so, I've seen cases where someone's underwear choice or porn search history be used to prove the victim wanted the action to happen. It's sickening.
All in all, I'm not someone that particularly wants kids, but really makes me terrified to have a daughter based on this film, but also the experiences I and many of my girlfriends have faced personally. When the story because tough to break, you can see the two journalists looking at their young daughters and it fuelling their motivation for justice for these women, as well as a compelling final reason for the two women to finally go on record. They're braver than I for that.
A final shoutout has to go to the cast in this, especially Carey Mulligan and Jennifer Ahle who played Laura Madden - a victim of Harvey Weinstein suffering from cancer. They were powerful, and compassionate and told the story with the urgency and sensitivity it desired. I also particularly enjoyed Andre Braugher as the NY Times editor Dean Baquet who added so much gravitas to the scenes, especially cutting down Harvey whenever he tried to insult or bargain with his journalists.
Overall I really enjoyed this film, I know it hasn't done well and I blame that on the state of society & how prevalent misogyny is at present... and don't even get me started on Brad Pitt being an executive producer of this film as a defender of women's right *eyeroll*. 7/10.

Harvey Weinstein Avoids Jail Time Thanks to Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton pawing Harvey Weinstein. The Clintons have known about Weinstein's sexual abuse for decades.
New York, NY - At the center of the explosive revelation of the sheer number of women that movie mogul Harvey Weinstein sexually abused and assaulted is the burning question, "Why wasn't anything done about it?" To date, over 60 women have stepped forward claiming that Weinstein had sexually assaulted them, ranging from charges of exposing himself all the way up to rape. Yet the abuse has been going on for decades and not a single charge was brought against Weinstein. It's no secret that Weinstein and failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were close, but how has that relationship helped Weinstein evade the long arm of the law, while extending his long arm of lecherousness for decades? Hillary Clinton's timely intervention, helped to cover up Weinstein's sexual abuse in show business for decades, and explains why Weinstein has never spent a day in court defending sexual abuse allegations, let alone a day in jail.
RELATED: HILLARY CLINTON'S SECRET RELATIONSHIP WITH HARVEY WEINSTEIN
Many considered Weinstein to be like Teflon when it came to accusing him of sexual abuse, everyone in Hollywood knew that you could throw whatever you liked at him, but nothing would stick. Yet many thought Weinstein had met his match in 2015,
On the evening of March 28, 2015, at a rendezvous at a ritzy New York hotel, the TriBeCa Grand, the first chunk of Weinstein's armor was taken down. Meeting with him at the hotel was the gorgeous Ambra Battilana, a 22-year-old model from Italy, who had reported to police the night before that Weinstein had groped her during a business meeting. Born in Turin, Italy, growing up, the gorgeous and leggy Battilana was no stranger to the amorous advances of Italian men. She's been fending off unwanted attention from Italian men (who can be even more aggressive than American men), catcalls, wolf whistles and the entire gamut of advances that men are capable of, since she hit puberty. Which is why when Weinstein didn't even attempt to flirt but when straight for the boob grab, Battilana was having none of it. On her second meeting with Weinstein, she was wearing a wire.
Harvey Weinstein and Hillary Clinton share a lighthearted moment, one of many they have shared over the years.
As Battilana asked Weinstein why he had touched her breasts at his office at their previous meeting, undercover police officers monitored the exchange, hanging on every word. Weinstein was dismissive and ushered Battilana into his hotel room with a casual,
"Oh please, I'm sorry, just come on in. I'm used to that. Come on. Please."
Battilana responded,
"You're used to that?"
Weinstein, switching between threatening and cajoling tones managed,
"Yes, I won't do it again."
Over the next two weeks, the investigation that unfolded was perhaps the biggest threat ever faced by Weinstein, one of the most prominent figures in American entertainment. Battilana was not one of his typical victims. Successful as a model internationally, there was no fear that Weinstein could 'make or break' her. After decades of sexual abuse, who would have thought that Weinstein would get taken down for a boob grab but get away with rape? Not Weinstein, who went on the attack...

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was secured a partial victory in court Monday.
A judge said she would allow Weinstein's defense the opportunity to question the wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, about an email she sent to Weinstein two years after she was allegedly raped by the now 70-year-old.
Los Angeles Judge Lisa Lench ruled that the defense could ask about an email Siebel Newsom sent seeking media advice from Weinstein, but could not say it was about revelations of an affair that Gavin Newsom had with an aide when he was mayor of San Francisco.
Weinstein's attorney, Mark Werksman, argued it was imperative to include the details, stating, "Of all things you’d think a woman that is raped by Harvey Weinstein wouldn’t do, it’s ask him how to deal with a sex scandal."
The judge disagreed with Werksman, suggesting he was overstating the case by saying Weinstein’s due process was at stake.
MEL GIBSON CAN TESTIFY AT HARVEY WEINSTEIN TRIAL: JUDGE
Siebel Newsom is one of five women Weinstein has been charged with raping and sexually assaulting.
This particular assault allegedly happened between 2004 and 2005 in a Beverly Hills hotel.
It was reported that Weinstein's team will argue the relationship was consensual.
HARVEY WEINSTEIN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO 11 SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES IN CALIFORNIA
Siebel Newsom is an actress and filmmaker who had been dating California's Gov. since 2006. They were married in 2008.
Throughout the course of their marriage, Siebel Newsom has been outspoken on sexual assault and gender equality.
The prosecution also secured a win on Monday, with the judge permitting the prosecution to play jurors a secret recording that another witness, Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, made of Weinstein in conjunction with New York police in 2015. In that recording, Weinstein apologizes for his behavior after she said he had grabbed her breasts and touched her thigh.
