In “honor” of Amazon Prime Day, Bookshop.org is offering free shipping on all purchases made Tuesday, July 11th and Wednesday, July 12th (plus a free tote bag on orders $100 and more).
Purchases through Bookshop.org support independent bookstores and the affiliates whose shops you select books from. New Smut Project editor T.C. Mill has a shop, from which all earnings are invested in NSP to cover things like paying authors. If you’d like a print copy of any of our anthologies, this is a great place and time to order them!
Get books from the New Smut Project on Bookshop.org
(Meanwhile, for a non-Amazon ebook option, Smashwords has its Summer/Winter sale running all through the month of July)
Edited to add: This sale appears to only be for the US version of Bookshop.org. However, shoppers in the UK also get free shipping from Bookshop with purchases of £25 or more. For some reason (probably related to distribution) New Smut Project books aren’t currently available through Bookshop in the UK, but we do have a shop page listing some of our favorite nonfiction about sex, gender, and sexuality.

Lol governments and charities really don't conceptualize disabled people at all
Caved in after waiting three months for my SNAP to go back to the previous two hundred thirty that was slashed to one-oh-eight dollars over summer with no reason given other than that I was under "redetermination" during that time despite my having emailed the papers needed over back in May. So that was four months of going hungry because I couldn't afford much in the way of hypoallergenic foods, and pretty much living off of white rice the entire time, only to be told last week I'm finally getting my SNAP increased again...by twelve whole dollars. Fuck. Gf bread is 7 dollars for a third of the amount so that's right out, same with pasta and even ramen, what little meat I've been eating is the fattiest slabs of ground beef that leave half a cup of grease when drained and maybe turkey bacon since it was on sale, I couldn't afford oat milk when I last ordered groceries, and today I had my first fresh fruit in weeks solely because of a new program in my city alone that gives us thirty bucks of SNAP for fresh produce.
So I caved and contacted 211, the government hotline that's supposed to hook you up with various help like charities, housing, and food pantries, pleading my case that I, a disabled person with no car, no ability to carry things more than five pounds, and no ability to walk very far, with only a corner store and amazon delivery for food and no food pantry within my severely limited walking distance, and even should I be able to hobble to a distant pantry and somehow don't wreck my back carrying a box of food home, there's no guarantee I'd even be able to eat what they gave me.
So I plead my case and desperate circumstances and this is the email I got back from them.
[Image Described: a screenshot of an email that says "Good afternoon, I am responding to your request for food assistance. While we do not offer a program her [sic] that specifically meets your needs, I will email over severeal resources in your area that may be able to assist you during this time. In terms of transportation, we" it cuts off. End I.D]
And then they send me a list of the closest pantries, all out of walking distance even before I had a bum knee and a cane and probably give out breadish food, and they say they have a "special lyft program" I can use a full TWO times a month, but that still leaves me unable to carry a box to and from the lyft.
lol rip me I guess 🥲

Semi-unemployed, commissions open
Due to some combination of company issues and government finances, I can't work at my day job for at least the next week, possibly not for the rest of the month. Since I'm missing out on at least $514 I'm opening commissions for writing. For $30 (USD) I'll write you a short story of up to 5,000 words, longer stories we can negotiate. For $20 I'll edit and proofread one of your stories of any (reasonable) length. As a reminder, I also offer Ko-Fi https://ko-fi.com/zarpaulek and Patreon https://www.patreon.com/Zarpaulus subscriptions. I also offer subscriptions on DA https://www.deviantart.com/zarpaulus/subscriptions but that's going to close in a week unless I get enough subscribers to justify paying for Core. In addition, three of my books are on sale this month on Smashwords thanks to their Summer/Winter sale https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/Zarpaulus and I have two more books on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/stores/Joel-Kreissman/author/B0BWQ18LWH I also knit.

Haribo Gummy Bears Review
🤣🤣🔥
Link to read the Review on Amazon
It was my last class of the semester, and the final exam was worth 30% of our grade.
After a late night study session I felt confident, but I had to decide between sleeping in or cooking breakfast. My eyelids chose sleep. My stomach later regretted this decision, and after several uncomfortable stomach growls, I finally decided to make a quick stop by the campus bookstore and grab a snack before my test. Since the semester was ending and everyone was going home for the summer, a lot of items were on sale, including the snacks and candy that they kept up front. Being in the hungry state that I was in, it felt only logical to pick the largest, yet least expensive candy in order to get more bang for my buck.
And there they sat: two bags of Haribo Sugar-Free Gummi Bears, buy one get one free. "What a deal!" I thought naïvely. I would eat one bag before my test, and one bag afterwards.
As I walked to class, I gleefully chewed on those abominable little bastards, unaware of the utter mayhem that they would soon unleash upon my poor, poor anus.
I sat down at my desk as the professor informed us that, due to issues with cheating in the past, restroom breaks would be prohibited until the completion of the exam. "I'll give you 10 minutes to use the restroom now; this will be your last chance. Any takers?"
The demon bears hadn't released their unholy necromancy upon my stomach yet, so in my moment of ignorant foolishness, I remained seated, still munching on those miniature bear-shaped bombs. After the students wise enough to take the professor's offer had returned, the professor handed out the test. I was six questions in when it happened.
It started subtly at first, almost like a slight tingly sensation in my lower abdomen. I thought nothing of it, assuming my intestines were just doing their thang. Little did I know that my intestines were trying desperately to warn me of the horror that was on the horizon. By question 9 it happened again, but this time it was followed by a sharp pain, as if those infernal hellions had orchestrated an attack upon my colon. I fought to contain the groan that tried escaping my lips. It was at this point I began to panic; something was going horribly long, and I needed to get through this test before it got any worse.
By question 14 my worst fear was upon me; the Satan bears' burning, hot, liquidy dark magic crashed against my anal sphincter like a tidal wave. I was able to close the hatch just in time, but those relentless, toxic bears beat against it like Orcs breaking down the doors of Helm's Deep. I knew I wouldn't be able to so much as shift in my seat without risking a breach.
I kept fighting through my exam, clenching my cheeks with all my might. Beads of sweat began rolling down my neck. Suddenly, a loud, gurgling war cry came from my belly, and the entire class lifted their heads.
At this point, nothing mattered except expelling this ungodly presence from my bowels. With 15 questions left, I promptly wrote C for every answer and ran out of the classroom. My professor yelled something, but I was too preoccupied with the volcanic eruption that needed to take place before I could find sweet, sweet relief.
I burst into the restroom like the Kool-Aid man and, behold, the handicap stall was empty. Sun rays from the adjacent window shone upon it, as if it were a gift from God himself. It took me less than .5 seconds to undo my belt buckle, pull down my pants, and finally relax my weary buttocks upon the toilet seat.
It took absolutely no effort to expel this demon. Almost immediately, the floodgates of hell were opened and the damned, liquified souls of an entire bag's worth of gummi bears cried as they burned through my sphincter and into the watery abyss below. I had never felt such simultaneous relief and anguish in my life.
After 30 more minutes of this, I immediately went home, dug a hole in my backyard, and burned the remaining bag of gummi bears. I leave with this; do not, I repeat do NOT eat these spawns of Satan. Not only did they cause me to fail my final test, but the anguish I experienced is something I wouldn't wish upon anyone, not even my worst enemy. The only place these god forsaken hell bears belong are buried deep below the Earth's surface.

Soggy Solstice
Good thing I didn’t pan to celebrate the summer solstice by dancing nekkid in a meadow or anything because it rained all day. I’m not complaining about that one bit because we really needed the rain. It was a lovely, steady, restful rain - more than a drizzle less than a deluge. I know the gardens were slurping up the water. It almost seems like the very best way to welcome summer, by helping green things flourish. I like it. Because it was a rainy day, I spent most of my time inside. I did do a little porch sittin’ with a good book for a while, but most of my time was in the house. B-O-R-I-N-G. All of that time on my hands and I didn’t get a whole lot done. I puttered. I did make a pot of vegetable soup, did one load of laundry, tidied a bit...and then wasted the day. Oh wait! It wasn’t all wasted - I did a physical therapy session! My insurance offers telehealth PT so I thought I’d take advantage of it for my issues. I signed up, filled out a long form with my ailments, then had a phone call with a physical therapist who set up my program, and they shipped me a kit. Inside the kit was a tablet, some motion sensors that I strap on my chest and my hips, and chargers for all of it. Today was my first session and it was great, I could feel the difference, but....I can’t keep the damn cat from batting at the screen and moving me on to the next exercise. Phoebe was fascinated with the lady on the screen and no matter where I moved it the floor the counter, whatever, she was right there.
This...
looked like this most of the time.
I guess I’ll have to do it in a bedroom with the door locked. Still, it felt great and if it works I’ll be very happy. Even better, my insurance considers this preventative for chronic pain management so it’s FREE. Yippee! Just wait, I’ll be as good as new in no time. Look for me on the streets.
When I tidied up today I wondered if anyone else keeps a basket of reading glasses by their bed.
I don’t wear prescription glasses, but my old lady eyes do get tired by the end of the day. I read in bed so I have a wardrobe of cheap eyeglasses nearby. The last time I had my peepers checked the doctor sort of rolled his eyes at that, but didn’t scold me. I’m terrified of needing glasses. They’re expensive and I know I’d sit on them, drop them, or lose them. I mean, I guess the idea is to keep them on your face so none of that happens, but I’m not taking any chances. I’ll keep buying cute specs at Target and Amazon until I can’t anymore.
I’ll tell you what I did see - some cute crafts at Artisans on the Choptank last week. I was on sort of a scouting mission to see if anyone was selling wares similar to what I make. Nope. The next event is in mid-September so I might give it a whirl. It’s a really cool chance for local makers to show and sell their stuff. It’s down by the water at Wharves of the Choptank Visitor Center and there’s usually live music and a couple food trucks. I really liked what I saw there - a nice variety and all of it really interesting and well-made. I met a super fun lady who had a booth and we chatted a lot. I wanted to take her home with me, but she probably just wanted to make a sale. She did. I bought a keychain made of wood beads and a tassel. The disk it what sold it for me.
Yeah, I’m too old for an Eminem joke but it still makes me giggle. I think the fact that I have a loyalty tag for my local grocery and my library card on that keychain makes me a total gangsta.
They see me rollin’. They hatin’.
My jokes aren’t even current. How old is that song? Fifteen, twenty? Yikes. It’s time for me to go upstairs and take a bath. I’ll grab a pair of my basket glasses and read a good book. I picked up two at the library yesterday, so I have high hopes.
Take care of yourselves, sweethearts. Do something that’s good for your soul every day, even if it’s just for ten minutes. Those minutes add up. I read poetry. Sometimes I come across a poem that hits right in the heart and I think about it all day. For you it might be turning your face to the sunshine, taking a dance break, or making a quick sketch of something. Okay, sure, it could also be exercise, a quick ten minutes walk used to revive me mid-afternoon at work. Sometimes just a lap around the building is enough to recharge. You get the idea - take care of yourself, body and spirit. Off to a bubble bath I’ll see you soon. Stay safe, stay well. XOXO, Nancy

Hello-Hello and happy almost end-of-summer! Who would have thought Labor Day would arrive so quickly? We begin with news that the Prince and Princess of Wales attended church services on Sunday. The couple joined the King and Queen at Crathie Kirk, Balmoral’s local parish church in Scotland. Several stories from mainstream media outlets say Prince George also attended the service with his parents. Hello reports other royals in attendance included “the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, James, Earl of Wessex, and Sir Tim Laurence.” More on the ties between the royal family and the church can be found in this post on the church site. It was to this church that Queen Victoria came in 1848 on coming to Balmoral Castle. This began the custom, which continues to this day, of members of the Royal Family and their guests worshipping with local people in the parish church. Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the present church in 1893 and the new church was completed and dedicated in 1895. Funds for the new building were raised by subscription and gifts from parishioners and members of the public. A gift of £2,000 was made by Queen VIctoria’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Louise who raised the money at a Bazaar held in the grounds of Balmoral Castle. Photos were very limited. Hello has pictures, as does the Daily Mail. Below, a Sunday social media post by the Mail. King Charles and Kate Middleton publicly seen together for the first time since Trooping the Colour as they attend Sunday service at Crathie Kirk with family – after both have battled cancer diagnoses pic.twitter.com/fdWlklNkKV — Daily Mail Online (@MailOnline) August 25, 2024 The Princess appeared to be wearing almost the identical ensemble she wore when attending church at Crathie Kirk last August. Her coat looks like the Holland Cooper Full-Length Marlborough Trench Coat (£849, about $1120 at today’s exchange rates). She also brought back the Hicks and Brown Suffolk Fedora ($155) seen last year. The Princess’s earrings appear to be the Dina style (no longer available) by Sézane, shown here when worn on a previous occasion. Now to the second portion of today’s post, a look at ways to create your own repliKates, or have a seamstress/tailor make one for you. The original suggestion for this post came from a comment left by Nancy back in late May, and it has been fun putting it together. We’ll begin with one of the most well-received gowns the Princess of Wales has worn, the one-shoulder Alexander McQueen design first worn to the 2019 BAFTAs. One way to replicate the look is through Butterick’s B5987 pattern (prices started at $5.20 when I did a search on Etsy). The pattern is also offered by several sellers on eBay (prices vary). In the montage below on the far right, I show the original McQueen gown used for the basis of the Princess’s look. The Roland Mouret ‘Nansen’ cold-shoulder gown worn for a Kensington Palace gala has long been a favorite for many. The McCall’s M786 pattern ($15.36) offers a great way to create your own version of the style. The link above is for purchasing the pattern at Joann. It is also available at Amazon ($9.25), as well as at Etsy ($7.95) and from a variety of sellers on eBay (prices vary). If very brave and not put off by an intricate design, Vogue 1982 offers the chance to go for the look of the cape-effect Jenny Packham gown worn to the November 2022 state dinner. I say ‘brave’ as someone who has sewn since childhood, and I imagine the cape element may be a complex part of the design. The pattern is available from a number of eBay sellers and also from Etsy sellers. This Wedding Guest Dress pattern ($3.12 on sale, usually $12.50) from La Verart Design is a digital download that looks like an okay option for the much-loved teal Jenny Packham gown first worn to the 2012 pre-Olympic Team GB gala. For those interested in doing your own version of the Roland Mouret gown ($1300) worn to the Top Gun premiere, the Emma Dress Pattern ($1400) is an option. Creating a basic gown with embellished fabric (sequins, beads, crystals, oh my!) can be a lot of fun. McCall’s 8038 gives you a starting point to work from with a round neckline and clean lines. It is priced as low as $6.50 on Etsy, it is $15.36 at Joann, and $19.95 at Amazon. The Suzannah London shirtdress worn for an outdoor meeting at Sandringham was a popular look. The Vogue 1783 pattern ($22.40 at Joann, $11.16 at Etsy) provides a pretty good jumping-off point for copying that look, although you will need to take some of the volume of the sleeves as shown in the pattern. We know how much the Princess enjoys a fit and flare silhouette. McCall’s 7313 offers an opportunity to recreate that look. The pattern is available for as little as $4 on eBay, starting at $6.50 on Etsy, and is also offered at Amazon ($9.77). Other fit and flare patterns with potential: New Look 6567 (starting at $6.95 on Etsy, $8.99 at Amazon, $12.95 at Walmart) and Simplicity 9176 ($8.48 at Amazon, as low as $9.99 on eBay, starting at $5.86 on Etsy). The Princess also appreciates a classic sheath silhouette, and Butterick 6849 provides that in two basic designs. It is available at $7.95 on Etsy, starts at $2.50 on eBay, is $12.27 at Amazon, and sells for $15.36 at Joann. McCall’s 8268 is a vintage pattern offering both a sheath style and fit and flare designs; I found it for $7 on Etsy and $11.99 on eBay. McCall’s 7085 also provides a basic style with princess seams. It is as low as $7.99 on Etsy, starts at $7.50 on eBay, and is priced at $9.56 at Amazon. Two more possibilities come via Etsy. On the left, a Pencil Dress Pattern ($3.50) available via digital download from seller Witeson Patterns. On the right, the Women’s Dress Pattern ($8.12) from SewistCAD. It doesn’t copy a specific dress so much as it has design elements seen in many of the Princess’s coatdresses and regular dresses. I will wrap up the post with two oldies but goodies, the first being the Butterick pattern replicating the Princess’s wedding gown. It is available from multiple sellers on Etsy; it is also offered at Amazon. And the second is the Butterick pattern ($12.99 on eBay, $10 on Etsy) for a dress very closely resembling the McQueen gown worn by Pippa Middleton Matthews at her sister’s wedding. The pattern is also available from multiple eBay sellers. One caveat if buying patterns via eBay and Etsy: be sure to check the patterns include the sizes you want and that it is complete. If older or vintage, buying patterns described as “uncut” is ideal. (function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.0"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); (document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Source link
