"Amazon’s warehouses are especially dangerous for workers during the company’s annual Prime Day event, as well as the holiday season, according to an investigation by the US Senate.

Prime Day, held on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, is “a major cause of injuries for the warehouse workers who make it possible,” said a report released Monday by Sen. Bernie Sanders, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The report noted “the extremely unsafe conditions in Amazon warehouses” during the two peak periods and called on the company to do more to protect warehouse workers.

The data shows that during Prime Day 2019 the rate of “recordable” injuries �� those Amazon is required to disclose to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration — exceeded 10 per 100 workers, more than double the average in the US warehousing and storage industry.

[And] Amazon’s total injury rate, which includes injuries the company does not have to report to OSHA, was just under 45 per 100 workers, the report said.

Amazon raked in $12.7 billion in sales on July 11 and 12 last year, its Prime Day 2023 event, and said July 11 was the single biggest sales day in the company’s history. For the first three months of 2024, the e-commerce giant reported a profit of $10.4 billion."

TOP NEWS & ARTICLES 

Etsy has yet again changed how processing times work for some countries, and this time, they’ve opted everyone into working on every national holiday. [post by me on LinkedIn, with screenshots] Many people are happy they can officially opt out of working on some days, but not so happy Etsy opted them in. The next day, Etsy clarified that this is currently only available for Canada and the US, and is only for national holidays, not regional or provincial ones. 

The old Etsy listing form disappeared as promised on June 25, and the new one is still a mess [post by me on LinkedIn]. Etsy claims to have fixed numerous issues with the new listing form, including manual translations, bulk editing, and sharing to Pattern. No word on the numerous pricing issues that have affected non-US sellers in particular through the domestic pricing tool, and that have apparently changed both variations and shipping prices for US sellers. The latest new listing form fix is the inability to save drafts, although it doesn’t seem to be working for everyone. 

USPS seems to have reused its tracking numbers early recently, with widespread reports of labels created June 18 and later showing as already being delivered in April or May. I’ve updated that linked Patreon post with info on how to get Etsy to correct their own records, so that seller protection and Star Seller status are not affected. 

ETSY NEWS

Etsy is still pushing shop loans through YouLend, “up to two times your monthly revenue.” Thanks to Michele from Artologica for the screenshot of the dashboard notification, and some of what you see once you click it:

and a link to the Etsy program at YouLend. Please read the terms carefully, as they get repaid through your future sales. It appears to be US-sellers only. 

There’s a new “Made for You” page with a lot of links to various features for buyers, but I don’t see it linked anywhere on the desktop version of the site. I also don’t really see the point, but maybe we’ll have to wait and see how they use it. 

Apologies for missing this one, but sellers in Turkey must now use “ShipEntegra” to mail orders, unless they already use another service. In effect, this means all new shops in Turkey are required to sign up and only ship orders through ShipEntegra, as of June 3. 

Apparently the “Buy More and Save” badge Etsy applied to some listings that already had multiple quantity discounts is just a test [item 2] per Etsy.

Facebook appears to be removing links to EcommerceBytes on its platforms. 

Amazon

Amazon's "Subscribe & Save" feature will be available for products that are not Fulfilled By Amazon items, as of June 27. 

Amazon's Prime Day 2024 is July 16-17th. 

“Ad Relevance” is Amazon’s proposed solution to the end of ad cookies; it has AI at its core. 

North American Amazon orders will stop using plastic air pillows by the end of the year. 

Amazon is facing another lawsuit on copying successful sellers’ products and manipulating the Buy Box, this time in the UK. 

eBay

As of July 1, eBay will be charging most of its sellers more for Express Payouts: $2 each time instead of 1.5% of the total. 

eBay is now charging buyers of luxury wallets and handbags an optional $40 for authentication, for items between $200-$499.99. Items $500 and up are still authenticated for free. 

The eBay Summer 2024 Seller Update included new tools and renamed programs, but some of them had already been announced. 

If you are using the eBay seller app, watch for draft listings disappearing. 

Shopify

Businesses selling through Shopify can now apply to sell on Target Plus, a third-party marketplace that currently has around 1200 sellers. 

Shopify now has a chatbot for site owners, called Sidekick, but it is currently only available to English stores in North America. 

Walmart

Walmart+ Week started June 17th, almost a month before Amazon’s Prime Day. 

All Other Marketplaces

Just a few months after ending selling fees, Mercari is laying off a substantial portion of its US-based workers. It’s also still looking for new sellers, offering credits that can be spent on the site for opening a new shop and inviting friends. 

Payment Processing

Apple Pay Later is being phased out in favour of “Affirm”, a third-party Buy Now Pay Later app that will be available in more countries than Apple’s own product. 

Shipping

USPS hopes to change its non-standard package surcharges by region, charging more when the package travels further.

My Dungeon Master Tool Kit Part 4 - Affordable-ish Tablet for RPG PDFs Finally, the Dungeoneering Dad has come back to his Dungeon Master Kit series (part 1, part 2, and part 3).  Why PDFs? As much as I love the usefulness, lack of eye strain, and, dare I say it, the beauty of hard copy books, I've found myself using PDF copies of RPGs more and more. They take up less space (duh), support smaller publishers, and are typically cheaper.  As of now, I have an online library of 693 items at DriveThruRPG (...not gonna lie, that's a bit embarrassing).  An actual gamer using a tablet in sheer ecstasy.  Why a Tablet? less to cart around access to a large library of PDFs can search books electronically feel like you're from the future Why a Fire Tablet? Rich Corinthian leather case. Look, straight up, if you can afford an iPad, the Fire tablet can't compete. However, if you're budget-minded, I recommend the Fire. (It was known as the "Kindle Fire," but they seem to have dropped the "Kindle" part.) As I've mentioned a few times in ages past (linky link and linky link), I use a Fire for my RPG PDFs.  Nice things about the Fire: Cheap-ish. Amazon puts them on sale multiple times a year (holidays, Prime Day, etc.). Expandable storage with an SD Card. From my understanding, you need an adapter to use an SD Card with an iPad. With a Fire (and other Android tablets), you just pop the card in. Spiffy cases: link  How to Add PDFs "Officially." PDF readers aplenty. Since a Fire isn't a normal tablet, there are a few easy ways to add files for use with the official Kindle app. 1. Use the "Send to Kindle" website to upload them: link You'll need to use this particularly if the PDF files are large. 2. Email the PDF.  Each Amazon account has a "send-to-Kindle" email address (e.g., "Best_DM_Ever@kindle.com"). Simply email the PDF as an attachment to that address and it will show up in your Kindle app library before too long. 3. Connect your Fire to your PC and transfer them that way. 4. Get an SD Card, put that into your PC, load up the card, and then pop that into your Fire. My DriveThruRPG library... beyond and tremble. Since a Fire isn't a typical Android tablet, you can't typically use it like a normal tablet. However, you can pretty easily side-load the Google Play Store and then, bingo, you can install a lot more apps including, the DriveThruRPG Library app, a variety of PDF readers, etc. Here is a great "How to Geek" article detailing how to get the Google Play Store: link Here is a kind of spiffy PDF reader: EBookDroid Once you do that, you can use a variety of nice apps to organize your library, although I'm starting to use the DriveThruRPG Library app itself more and more. You Never Truly Own Your Games in Digital Format I’ve seen many posts mentioning that, since Steam doesn’t grant full ownership of the games you purchase, some people are moving to GOG. However, GOG doesn’t grant ownership of the product either. What they do offer is an offline installer, allowing you to install your games whenever and wherever you want.I have some games on GOG that I also own on Steam, thanks to Amazon Prime Gaming and a few sales. I even bought games like Skyrim on GOG just to preserve my mod loader and avoid worrying about automatic updates. At the end of the day, both services only provide you with a license to use the product, not ownership.So, it comes down to what you get when buying your games. On Steam, you gain access to various utilities like controller support, constant cloud saves, faster download speeds, and region-based pricing. On GOG, you only get cloud saves if you have GOG Galaxy installed. This isn’t usually the case if you use an offline installer downloaded through a browser. However, the best part is that most of your games are patched to work on the latest operating systems, as long as you've kept them updated.One drawback I’ve found with GOG is that some games aren’t patched internally by the developers. A good example is Tomb Raider 2013 (TR 2013). The game has a challenge where a sea mine hides behind a rock, making it impossible to complete. This issue was patched in the Steam version but not on GOG, as far as I remember.Additionally, some developers seem to treat GOG customers like second-class citizens. For instance, Styx the shards of darkness has no online support so the devs decided to give off the dlc instead, then you had games which didn't even add the DLCs to GOG just because it was DRM free and then you have the modding scenes, Skyrim Special Edition was released on GOG five years after it came out on Steam, and it has an entirely different version that requires a separate set of DLL mods. Even modding tools like SSEEdit don’t work without tweaking the argument section in MO2.The drawbacks on Steam mostly involve launching older games, but you usually have a solid community to back you up. Widescreen patches, 60fps mods, and HD texture mods are easily found in the guides or reviews section on Steam. Some Steam games are also DRM-free, so you can always play them offline.While Steam itself is a form of DRM, it doesn’t encourage developers to set up their own DRM—this is entirely up to the devs. In fact, developers can only revoke your ownership of a game on Steam if you bought your keys from a shady site not listed in this link. Games bought directly on Steam will not be revoked unless the developers pull the game from the platform, as in the case of Concord. In that instance, refunds were promptly issued.Even if a game is delisted on Steam, you still retain your copy (e.g., GTA Trilogy and Marvel’s Avengers).The only thing the devs can restrict is access to the online features in the game afaik so nothing has changed so far only thing the government had forced Steam to give this message for the users about the ownership of the game before purchase.However, both platforms have their drawbacks—GOG can suffers from bloated launcher, delayed patches and limited modding support, while Steam's reliance on DRM and occasional issues with older games may be off-putting for some. Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to whether you value the technical freedom GOG offers or the broad ecosystem and ease of use provided by Steam.
