27 new, exciting, and blobby species discovered in the Peruvian rainforest
BY LAURA BAISAS
POSTED ON DEC 20, 2024
A rainfrog, an amphibious mouse, and a “blob-headed” fish are only some of the 27 new species discovered deep Peru’s Amazon rainforest. During a survey in 2022, a team from Conservation International recorded 2,046 total species living in this lush and heavily forested landscape, many of whom are endangered.
The creatures were all found in the Alto Mayo Landscape which spans the Andes mountains to the Amazon River and includes the Alto Mayo Protected Forest. Instead of being one static environment, the Alto Mayo Landscape is a complex mix of different ecosystems and communities, including Indigenous territories, cities, and towns. (Continue reading)

More thoughts on supporting GO S3
I will always be grateful to GO for giving me comfort in troubling times, but now I find it difficult to support a new season of the series that mainly benefits an alleged perpetrator.
Five credible sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman and he's still capable of successfuly releasing another project under his name. Season 3 being released helps him to keep his status as a lucrative creator in the entertainment industry and this helps him to conserve the power that has allowed him to get away with it for so long. His PR team has been making a great work burying the news about the allegations and sadly people hyping Good Omens season 3, without mentioning the allegations, inadvertendly helped on this as well.
However, my opinion will not determine the future of the season. We could assume that Amazon has already invested a lot in the production to just abandon it, so the second best thing would be to ask Amazon to fire Gaiman, he could secretly keep working on the series and the scripts were mainly written by him (the actors and everyone involved will voice Gaiman's words, ugh), and the series will be promoted undeniably mentioning him as one of the creators (I'm sorry for the victims having to hear people praising his name everywhere once again :c), but luckily the news about the allegations would also spread further, more people would come to know about the dangers of Gaiman's predatory behaviour and he would see some consequences.
I still think that cancelling the season would be the best case scenario, but firing him resoundingly and making the reasons for his dismissal heard far and wide might be a reasonable middle ground.
This is just my opinion, but I understand that at the end of the day it's an individual decision whether or not to support the third season.
I'm just going to ask everyone to please reflect on the power Gaiman gains from the projects that are released under his name (not just financially).
Thanks to everyone who has spoken up about the SA accusations even if it hurt to learn that someone who helped create such beloved stories ended up doing so much damage as well.
Here there is a great post that presents actions that fans can take in support of firing Gaiman, still having Season 3, and not ignoring that the allegations exist.
(Petitions, extra steps, etc.)
Thanks a lot to the creator of the card!
Update:
It has been confirmed that both Gaiman and his own production company are out of the project, thanks to everyone who supported his dismissal!
The changes made for the GO final serve as a message to the creators and everyone abusing of their power:
If you harm people, it will not be without consequences for you and the things you profit from financially and professionally.
Power to the victims. They were brave enough to share their stories. You will never be forgotten.
Scarlett, K, Claire, Caroline, Julia, Courtnee...
Still sceptical about supporting the victims? I recommend reading:
Staying neutral until Neil Gaiman is convicted by the courts?
Falling Safes (I very much recommend reading this one)
Here there is a great summary of the available sources (Podcasts links, transcripts, etc.): Credits for the round up to Muccamukk.
Thank you to all those who continue to speak out about the allegations and do not let the voices of the victims fall into oblivion.

“You know you’re priced right when your customers complain—but buy anyway.” — John Harrison
Dynamic pricing is not new but it has not been widespread up until recently.
We all know about train fares being more expensive during peak times and parents know that holidays cost more during school breaks than at any other time of the year. Airline tickets are subject to dynamic pricing and there was a trend towards off-peak electricity tariffs at one time. This summer we saw tickets for Oasis concerts subject to dynamic pricing, resulting in massive spikes in the cost of a ticket.
Dynamic pricing is when a company changes their pricing to match demand and supply. Hence train journeys are more expensive during the rush hour than in the middle of the day when demand is lower. Holidays are more expensive during school breaks because demand is higher from families with children.
Few of us like this traditional method of dynamic pricing but we have accepted it as part of our way of life. The old fashioned dynamic pricing model was fairly unsophisticated and based on the time of day in the case of rail and airline tickets and specific weeks and months of the year in the case of holidays.
This is no longer the case. Artificial Intelligence allows companies to literally change prices in line with changes in demand every second if they so want. Some of the companies using AI to set prices are Amazon, Uber, Airbnb, Tesco, Ocado and Sky. Amazon is said to reset prices every ten minutes.
The days of “fixed pricing" are fast disappearing. Long gone are the days when a company added up all of its production costs to work out the cost per unit and then added a little bit more in order to make a profit. This was basically what is known as the objective or labour theory of value. This has been supplanted by the "subjective theory of value" (STV).
According to the subjective theory of value a products worth (price) is not determined by how much it costs to produce but by how much people are willing to pay for that good at any given moment. At its worst this means that ALL goods and services should be sold for maximum monetary return regardless of the cost of production. No wonder supporters of neo-liberal economics favour STV.
At one level this doesn’t really matter. Oasis concert tickets may have doubled in original price due to dynamic pricing but not being able to afford a concert ticket is not a matter of life or death. It is however, symptomatic of a growing social problem.
The assumption of neo-liberal economists and their support of STV pricing is that individual choice is paramount in all economic transactions. For the neo-liberal societal values do not exist, there is only individual choice. Mrs Thatcher, the woman who championed neo-liberal economics in the UK, famously said: “There’s no such thing as society”. Many Tory's still believe this to be true but they are demonstratively mistaken.
During Covid we all stood at our doors every Thursday night clapping and banging pots to applaud the bravery of our dedicated health professionals. Yes, we did this as individuals but also as a society. When the England football team were progressing through the stages of the European cup we watched each game as individuals but also as a nation. The same is true of the recent Olympic and Paralympic games.
Ironically, some of our most ardent neo-liberal Tory MP’s have been recently admonishing us for not being proud of our English identity. Robert Jenrick, a contender for the leadership of the Conservative Party said yesterday that English identity had “started to fray” due to mass immigration and public institutions “dismissing our history”.
Sorry, the neo-liberals cannot have it both ways. Either there is an entity called English society, with its own history and set of values, or we are just individuals all acting according to our own individual needs. The fact that latter view is obviously mistaken does not deter the advocates of dynamic pricing. For them the goal is maximisation of profit regardless of social cost.
A thousand reasons why dynamic pricing is good for the consumer will be rolled out as more and more companies adopt this system of pricing, but the bottom line will always be making more profit. And in a system where pricing is determined by what price the individual is willing to pay rather than the actual cost of production, in the end it is only the rich who benefit.
South West Water has recently introduced the cruder form of dynamic pricing to their customers. They will be charging more for water use in summer than in winter. Consumers were given no choice about this and they have yet to be told what the charges will be. This “trial" will last for 2 years.
This is the spin:
“These pioneering trials are designed to make sure that water bills are fairer and more reflective of individual consumption patterns and are part of our wider commitment to making customer-first decisions in everything we do.” (CornwallLive:19/09/24)
Note the emphasis on “individual consumption". To my mind water is a public good, a societal necessity. As such I want to see pricing evened out over the whole community. Under dynamic pricing  the rich can consume as much water as they like because they can afford to pay, while the poorer members of society will have to suddenly become use conscious. While the rich fill their swimming pools and have the lawn sprinklers on day and night, the poor will have to think twice about how often the toilet is flushed, how often the washing machine is used and can they afford to shower everyday. The poor pensioner will be calculating whether or not they have enough money to water their beloved garden.
Ok, my pensioner being unable to afford to water the garden is a hypothetical scenario. The cost of music venue tickets isn’t, neither are the prices you pay for an Uber, a holiday let from Airbnb, the food you buy from Tesco or Ocado. Even the price of a pint is now affected by dynamic pricing.
“A campaign group representing pubgoers has criticised the move by Stonegate, Britain’s largest pub company, to raise the price of pints during its busiest trading hours in some of its venues by 20p..."  Financial Times: 12/09/24)
If the price of a British pint of beer is now subject to dynamic pricing then nothing is sacred!
More seriously, when the market economy becomes the market society, when those in power promote the value of maximising profit for the few at the expense of the happiness and well being of the many, then, as a society, we lose all sense of humanity, morality and common decency.
There has been much theoretical discussion of late about the threat of Artificial Intelligence to humanity. I would argue that maybe we should be more concerned about those  humans using AI to enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us.

It might seem strange, especially for those who only know Marshawn Lynch for his football career, to see the Super Bowl champ in a comedy about queer high school girls launching a fight club.
Bottoms (in theaters now) features the 37-year-old former NFL star in a scene-stealing role as Mr. G, a clueless teacher overseeing the feminist after-school club launched by Rachel Sennott’s PJ and Ayo Edebiri’s Josie. Even the film’s director and co-writer, Emma Seligman, admits she initially thought landing Lynch was a long shot.
“It was such a random movie for him to be in that I was so shocked that he even was considering it,” the Shiva Baby filmmaker (who goes by she/they pronouns) tells PEOPLE.
But the real reason for this unlikely casting is altogether more personal: Marshawn Lynch’s queer sister, Marreesha Sapp-Lynch, says he asked her whether to add Bottoms to a growing acting résumé that includes Westworld and Murderville.
“From the beginning when he read the script, he said that I came to mind,” recalls Sapp-Lynch, 34. “I was like, ‘Most definitely you should do it.’ I just told him, ‘It'll get you to understand, get more knowledge about the lesbian community.”
Like the characters of PJ and Josie, Sapp-Lynch has identified as a lesbian since high school. It felt easy coming out to her mother Delisa, she remembers — “She'll tell me to this day, 'I always knew you liked girls!'” — but brothers David, Marshawn and Davonte had a less straightforward reaction.
“They were understanding, but they didn't understand,” Sapp-Lynch tells PEOPLE. “Marshawn had a lot of questions and was thinking it was his fault: ‘What did I do?’ Because growing up he would always say I couldn't have a boyfriend, ‘You can't talk to boys.’ We’d go to a party and he'd be asking everybody, ‘Did you dance with my sister?’ But I wasn't attracted to boys, so I didn't dance with them!”
Her brother has accepted and celebrated her sexual orientation since those teenage years, Sapp-Lynch says. Case in point: Marshawn helped plan her 2021 wedding and walked her down the aisle.
“I asked him to walk me down the aisle because our dad passed away,” says Sapp-Lynch with a smile. “He cried the whole time,” she adds.
“He doesn’t cry — or I don't see him cry. The fact that he did cry and shed some tears, it meant a lot to me.” (Marshawn was so invested in his sister’s wedding, in fact, he urged the pair to reschedule it from 2023 to 2021. “He was very much involved in the whole planning... He called us at 5:00 a.m. talking about the cake designs and party favors.”)
But with Bottoms, a comedy produced by Amazon’s Orion Pictures and Elizabeth Banks’ Brownstone Productions, Marshawn had a bigger opportunity to honor his sister. Discussing the role of Mr. G with the footballer, Seligman, 28, remembers thinking there must have been “more of a connection here beyond him wanting to be in a funny movie or something.”
“In his words, he said he wasn't amazing about it when Marreesha came out in high school and that he felt like this was the universe giving him a chance to right his wrongs,” she adds. “He made it seem like that was really what was interesting him the most about it.”
Throughout the film’s shoot in New Orleans, Seligman says, “he kept on bringing up Marreesha.” Especially when Sapp-Lynch and her wife visited the set, she recalls, “He kept on being like, ‘That's my sister.’ In a way where it was like a proud parent [of queer kids] — a proud brother.”
And when Orion Pictures president Alana Mayo suggested Marshawn for Mr. G, Seligman says, she realized it might expand the moviegoing audience of Bottoms. “Him believing in these girls and getting to know them and getting to understand them means a lot in the grand scheme of things within the crazy conservative town that they're in.”
Plus, the story’s homophobic characters are obsessed with the high school football team, Seligman points out. “To have a legendary football player like him playing this character that's getting to know this subsection of this town, and see them as real people with valid desires and hormones and feelings — that's pretty cool that Marshawn is representing that kind of straight, male character.”
Sapp-Lynch agrees, and says seeing a movie full of gay characters like Bottoms while coming out in high school “would've helped me make me feel easier, make me feel better about me being who I am.”
“I didn't understand my sexuality in high school, so I actually think it might've freaked me out,” admits Seligman. “It would've excited me. Maybe it would've jumpstarted some things!”
Of co-writing the film with Sennott, she says, “I really just wanted to see my high school self in a stupid comedy.” She recalls a quote from Edebiri: “Being stupid is a political act.”
“Just having queer characters in something so silly and that's not serious feels subversive,” Seligman continues. “I don't think we're trying to prove anything political or have some sort of deeper message or meaning out of the movie. Other than ‘Gay people can be funny, sexy and horny, and that's normal.’ Sometimes just normalizing something is enough.”
“Marshawn in the movie,” she adds, “beyond him being a wonderful actor and improviser and a lovely human being, it is wild that it might be seen by so many more people who wouldn't have otherwise seen it.”

The Amazon is ablaze again. What it means for us (commentary)
Tumblr media
The Amazon rainforest, devastated by over 70,000 wildfires in 2019, is once again ablaze, threatening even greater destruction of wildlife, human health, and ecosystems.
Climate change is now a tangible global threat, with rising sea levels and extreme heat affecting entire regions, while indigenous communities, like the Kogi in Colombia, have long warned of these environmental dangers, argues Mark J. Plotkin, an ethnobotanist who co-founded the Amazon Conservation Team.
The Amazon, which stores one-fifth of the world’s terrestrial carbon, plays a crucial role in regulating global climate, but continued deforestation risks releasing this carbon and disrupting weather patterns far beyond the region.

Excerpt from this story from The Revelator:
How do you get people to care about something they can’t see?
That has always presented a challenge in environmental conservation messaging, where a consumer’s decisions can affect people or species on the other side of the planet. It can be hard to connect the dots between a candy bar containing palm oil sold in Indiana to the destruction of an orangutan’s habitat in Indonesia, or how purchasing a cheeseburger in Nebraska contributes to deforestation of the Amazon.
While advocates have had some notable successes communicating these threats, promoting similar efforts to protect ocean life has proven even harder — even for communities that live right next to those waters.
Two of the biggest threats to marine biodiversity come from unsustainable overfishing and habitat loss — both of which also threaten the food security and livelihoods of coastal communities.
To fight these threats, governments have increasingly turned to creating marine protected areas (MPAs), essentially underwater national parks that protect habitats and organisms that live within them.
What can we do to build local support for MPAs and enhance their success? Wootton and her colleagues tried using an innovative collection of virtual and visual tools to persuade people of the benefits of an MPA. It focused on beloved marine species that would be protected by an MPA network, which the researchers called the “Fab Five.”
Wootton and a team of marine scientists, in partnership with First Nations Sea Country peoples, wanted to assess what gets community members to care about the ocean and support an MPA. Working in South Australia, which has 26 commonwealth or state marine parks, they picked five iconic local species who benefit from the MPA, including the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), giant Australian cuttlefish (Sepia apama), white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster), great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), and southern right whale (Eubalaena australis).

Shohei Ohtani’s Shoulder Injury Clouds Dodgers’ World Series Path
Los Angeles, October 26, 2024 – The Dodgers’ Game 2 victory over the Yankees to claim a 2-0 lead in the World Series was quickly overshadowed by a shocking twist: Shohei Ohtani, the team’s multi-talented sensation, suffered a left shoulder injury in the seventh inning while attempting a stolen base. The star player's setback left fans, teammates, and managers holding their breath as the Dodgers now face an uncertain path forward in their title quest. Here’s a look at how the injury happened, its implications for the Dodgers, and what it means for Ohtani’s role in MLB.
The Injury: What Went Wrong During the Slide?
In a critical moment of Game 2, Ohtani reached base and made an aggressive move to steal second. As he stretched out his left arm to reach the bag, he landed awkwardly, immediately showing signs of discomfort. Dodger Stadium went silent as trainers quickly assessed Ohtani, who eventually left the field, cradling his shoulder. Initial reports are mixed, but the injury could potentially be significant enough to impact his performance or availability in the series.
Medical Analysis: Understanding the Risks of a Shoulder Injury in Baseball
Ohtani’s injury is suspected to involve strain or possibly minor ligament stress, which commonly occurs when athletes extend joints beyond their range. According to Dr. James Mallory, a sports medicine expert, “Shoulder injuries from aggressive slides can range from muscle strains to dislocations, both of which can affect power and rotation—key for a player like Ohtani.”
Given the high stakes of the World Series, the Dodgers are expected to monitor Ohtani closely, possibly employing MRI scans to determine the severity. If Ohtani’s injury proves minor, the Dodgers may cautiously reintroduce him into the lineup. However, if recovery requires more time, they will need to make immediate lineup adjustments, as each game in the World Series is pivotal.

Shohei Ohtani’s Role in the Dodgers’ Road to the World Series
The Dodgers have relied heavily on Ohtani since signing him in a landmark deal earlier this year. Ohtani’s numbers during the regular season—over .300 in batting average and high slugging metrics—were crucial in the Dodgers’ drive toward the postseason. His dual role, even though limited to hitting in this series, gave the Dodgers added flexibility and a reliable offensive force.
Ohtani’s ability to produce in clutch moments is exactly why the Dodgers brought him aboard. In Game 1, he notched two key hits, contributing to their initial win. His injury now places additional pressure on the Dodgers, as his left-handed power and adaptability are unique in their lineup.
Dodgers’ Strategic Adjustments Moving Forward
Should Ohtani be unable to return, manager Dave Roberts will need to make critical lineup decisions. The Dodgers’ reliance on Ohtani as a designated hitter and occasional left fielder means that his absence could affect both offense and defense. Without him, Roberts will likely have to rotate players like Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez into heavier-hitting roles to balance the lineup.
Roberts commented, “We’ll do whatever we can to get Shohei back, but our team is prepared to step up.” While confident, Roberts hinted at more conservative offensive strategies moving forward, as he navigates a Yankees bullpen well-equipped to exploit lineup shifts. Expect more bunts, base hits, and defensive plays to help control the game, as Roberts adapts to the loss of Ohtani’s left-handed power.

Yankees’ Strategic Shift: Taking Advantage of the Dodgers’ Dilemma
Ohtani’s potential absence offers an opportunity for the Yankees to refocus their pitching plans. Without having to navigate around Ohtani, Yankees pitchers can concentrate on Dodgers’ right-handers and lean more on the Yankees’ left-handed bullpen options. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has already signaled possible shifts in their bullpen usage, suggesting his team is prepared to target Dodgers batters now vulnerable in Ohtani’s absence.
As the Yankees recalibrate, they’ll seek to cut the Dodgers’ momentum, seizing on any opportunities the lineup change might create. Boone emphasized the importance of “staying aggressive and attacking weak spots,” making it clear the Yankees intend to take advantage of any perceived gaps in the Dodgers’ lineup.
Fan Reaction: Social Media’s Response and Global Support for Ohtani
As word of Ohtani’s injury spread, fans around the world voiced their concerns. Within hours, #GetWellSoonShohei trended on Twitter, with fans sharing supportive messages and photos. Japanese fans, in particular, held watch parties for the World Series, with entire communities rallying to support Ohtani, whose journey to MLB has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan. Ohtani’s popularity is a testament to his role in elevating baseball’s global reach, with fans from all corners of the world united in following his career.
Many Dodgers fans on social media expressed frustration with the stolen base attempt, questioning whether Ohtani’s health should have taken priority over such a risky play. Others praised his dedication, framing the stolen base attempt as symbolic of his commitment to winning a title for Los Angeles. Fans await updates on Ohtani’s condition, with many emphasizing the need for him to prioritize recovery—even if it means stepping back.

The Broader Impact: What Ohtani’s Absence Means for MLB’s Global Reach
Ohtani’s injury resonates beyond Dodger Stadium. As one of MLB’s most marketable stars, his absence could impact the World Series viewership, particularly in international markets like Japan, where his influence has been transformative. Major League Baseball, which has actively promoted Ohtani as a global ambassador, faces a potential loss in overseas engagement if he misses additional games.
For MLB, Ohtani embodies the sport’s potential to capture international attention, encouraging younger generations and aspiring athletes. His absence in the World Series may prompt discussions around the role of two-way players and the demands placed on athletes juggling multiple skill sets at an elite level. His injury highlights the risks of his unique role, sparking conversations about player safety and the physical limits of baseball’s two-way stars.
The Dodgers’ Next Steps: Roster Shifts and Possible Replacements
If Ohtani is indeed sidelined for upcoming games, the Dodgers will have to reconfigure both the lineup and defensive strategies. Players like Betts and Freeman, who already bear significant responsibilities, will likely step up further. The Dodgers may look to Muncy and Martinez for additional offensive power, though neither fully replaces Ohtani’s left-handed versatility.
The Dodgers’ 2-0 lead does provide some breathing room, but the Yankees’ resilience means each game remains critical. Roberts may consider calling on younger talent or other bench players, trusting in their postseason preparation to help secure the title. Regardless, the Dodgers’ path will test the entire lineup’s depth and adaptability in Ohtani’s absence.

The Psychological Shift: Dodgers Rally Around Their Injured Star
A loss like Ohtani’s often fuels a team’s emotional drive, galvanizing players to push harder. Ohtani’s teammates have expressed unwavering support, and many have cited his work ethic and dedication as a source of inspiration. Veteran Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw commented, “Shohei has been a warrior all season. If he’s not out there, we’re going to play for him.”
The injury could serve as a unifying moment for the Dodgers, motivating the lineup to perform in Ohtani’s absence. With their superstar temporarily sidelined, the Dodgers may find new energy in the shared goal of securing a title not only for themselves but also for their injured teammate.

Final Thoughts: Can the Dodgers Overcome Without Ohtani?
The Dodgers’ historic 2024 season has been shaped by Ohtani’s incredible talent and versatility. Losing him, even briefly, poses significant challenges, but the team’s depth and adaptability could carry them through. If the Dodgers succeed without him, it will reinforce their reputation as a team that can endure hardship without losing momentum.
Alternatively, if Ohtani’s recovery allows him to return to limited action, his presence—however small—could be the emotional lift the team needs to secure victory. Either way, the Dodgers’ resilience will be tested, as they strive to bring home a championship title with or without their star player.
In a season filled with unforgettable moments and dramatic shifts, the 2024 World Series now has an added layer of intrigue. Shohei Ohtani’s injury is yet another twist in a story of perseverance, resilience, and the pursuit of greatness. Whether he returns or watches from the sidelines, Ohtani’s spirit will remain embedded in every inning, pitch, and play, as the Dodgers chase baseball’s ultimate prize.

Paul Van Damme and Fortuna Vargas Mejía met 28 years ago in Puerto Villarroel, a village in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba. Van Damme was a Belgian marine biologist who found in the lagoons of the Bolivian Amazon “the closest thing to a sea.” Vargas was a native of Cochabamba who had worked as a navigator for 12 years before becoming a fisherman, so he knew well the Amazonian rivers and lagoons [...].
At that time — the 1990s — commercial fishing had just begun to boom in Puerto Villarroel, a municipality located on the banks of the Ichilo River in the Mamoré Basin [...] of the Bolivian Amazon. [...] Until then, the area and its forests had been well preserved and was home to a mainly Indigenous population. People from the Moxo and Yuqui Indigenous groups lived in communities along the banks of the river [...]. Little by little, people from other parts of Bolivia started to move to the urban center of Puerto Villarroel and its outskirts, leading to it eventually becoming the main and largest commercial port connecting western and eastern Bolivia. [...]
These investigations eventually led to the study of the bufeo, or river dolphin (Inia boliviensis), a species endemic to the Madera River Basin, the largest population of which is found in Bolivia. As a predator of small- and medium-sized migratory fish, the river dolphin’s presence is viewed as an indicator of aquatic and riparian habitat health. Put another way: It is very sensitive to any changes in the ecosystem [...].
---
In murky waters such as those of the Ichilo River, the dolphin was often seen shimmying to the rhythm of the waves and then disappearing, and it was a mystery as to where it would rear its head again. Sometimes, when the observation boat passed through warmer and clearer waters, small groups of 4-5 dolphins would appear in groups [...]. Last year, nature photographer Alejandro de los Ríos captured a pair of dolphins with an anaconda in their mouths. It is not known if they were playing with it or about to devour it, but the image was featured in news outlets around the world [...].
Until 2006, I. boliviensis was thought to be a subspecies of the Amazonian river dolphin, Inia geoffrensis, but [...] it was identified as an independent species. This differentiation, however, is still in the process of being recognized internationally. [...]. That is why, in the Bolivian Red Book of Vertebrates, it is considered a Vulnerable species, while for the International Union for Conservation of Nature it is listed as Endangered. [...]  Far from the debate, experts in conservation, biology and ecology have reacted with astonishment to the findings about Bolivia’s only fully aquatic mammal. Details about these aquatic mammals include [...] they behave differently whether they are in dark or clear waters; the mothers and the whole group take care of the offspring; and not only do they not want their offspring to go near the fishing nets, but they seem to reprimand them when they do so. Such findings are “new and fascinating” information, according to Lila Sainz, wildlife officer for WWF-Bolivia. [...]
---
[T]he presence of the dolphin has been reported in nine protected areas across Bolivia. [...] [T]he animals tend to migrate long distances [...]. “We have to take into account that I. boliviensis moves through rivers, but the other aquatic systems it uses, such as lagoons, meanders, and the surrounding habitat all are also important,” said Gabriel Tavera, a biologist [...]. “Furthermore, a number of these protected areas flood with water during the rainy season, meaning the bufeo can also swim through flooded forests,” he added.

I love how in The Boys you can very clearly tell which companies they're riffing on, especially when it comes to the two comic book giants. I know because it's an Amazon show it feels very "SILENCE, BRAND", but because it's shown in the story and production/costume design I choose to believe its the creative team doing it more than Amazon themselves. I mean, writers and actors aren't the only ones that get treated like shit by studios, they're just the most recent to strike. Anyways, my favorite examples from this season (so far, I'm in episode 2) Voughtland and the Dawn of The Seven stuff. I know the characters themselves are meant to be commentary on different DC and Marvel heros (Homelander being a Superman/Captain America, Maeve is very clearly Wonder Woman, etc.), but in terms of things outside of that. Like with Dawn of the Seven, the Vought Studios logo is VERY similar to the Marvel Studios logo, but the font used in the poster feels very reminiscent of the one used for at least the Josstice League version of JL, in addition to all the digs at the Snyder Cut stuff (i wouldn't be surprised if at some point we saw a #Restorethe Snyderverse parody at some point and I am here👏for👏it👏). Vought itself is obviously meant to be a Disney/Amazon parody (I will die on the hill that there's some Amazon mixed in there too even if it's supposed to be overly Disney with the Vought+ reference, Voughtland, etc). Voughtland was also really fun to me. I don't love the "kingdom of Inclusivity" thing because I think the people it's making fun of are going to take it as them "owning the libs" when in reality it seems to be parodying what conservatives seem to think Disney is turning into (at least. That's my read of it.). Crimson Countess's show is I know meant to be a riff on America Sings and other Disney park shows that are full of revisionist history, but I also can't help but wonder if they also were thinking of Rogers the Musical when they wrote that part (idk if Hawkeye was out at the time S3 came out but with the privilege of hindsight that's what my brain went to), especially since Soldier Boy is meant to be a "dark Captain America/Winter Soldier but he's ACTUALLY a villain and not just a brainwashed POW forced to do bad things" type. And like, don't get me wrong I'm fully aware I'm part of the group they're making fun of (I mean. Look at my url), but I always say that in order to love Marvel you gotta really fuckin hate Marvel, and I'm not blind to the issues with it, both the ones they're making fun of and the ones they aren't. Anyways, I don't think I'm saying anything new or groundbreaking or #deep, I just needed to word vomit my thoughts somewhere.

Yes, I Sat Up All Night to Finish This One
Tumblr media
Very occasionally, something wild happens and you end up sitting up all night reading a book. In my case, my sister literally messaged me on August 8 with a screencap of the Red, White & Royal Blue Amazon release date (August 11) and was like "Want to do a watch party when this comes out?" And so, dear reader, once I was off work at 10pm, I grabbed this book off my physical TBR pile and dived in. I had expected to take a couple of days to just barely get it read before we do the watch party. Reader, I sat up all night and inhaled this book in one sitting. Let's talk Red, White & Royal Blue.
*SPOILERS BELOW THE BREAK ON THIS ONE*
I'd be lying if I said I picked this book up for any reason other than a cute premise expecting it to be kind of kitchsy. I was pleasantly sursprised by this book! It has some weight to it, it has real stakes to it, it has fun, it has heart, and holy cow I am in AWE of how well Casey McQuiston differentitated their character voices in emails and text messages. That is challenging for writers, and they knocked it out the park.
Alex and Henry are quite literally the most adorable couple, and in the spirit of this book, I want to share the text messages I was sending one of my dear friends as I was reading. Yes, it's unhinged. Yes, it's all caps. Yes, you can skip to the rest of the review if you want, I won't take it personally. For those of you sticking around, here we go:
1:31 am
HOW IS THIS BOOK SO FUCKING ADDORABLE!?!?!?!
2:03 am
AT ONE POINT HE THREW OUT JONATHAN SWIFT TO WATCH HIS PRESS TEAM HAVE A CORONARY!?!? I AM IN THIS BOOK AS A HOT GAY PRINCE AND SOMEHOW THAT FEELS APPROPRIATE!?!?!?!?!?!?
2:22 am
HIS MOTHER MADE A POWERPOINT TITLED INTERNATIONAL ETHICS AND SEXUAL IDENTITY DEBREIF *SEE ATTACHED BIBLIOGRAPHY* IN A GODDAMN LOVE EMAIL I AM DYING
2:48 am
HE HAS A KEY TO THE V & A
3:18 am
ZAHRA AND SHAAN ARE YOU KIDDING ME OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!
4:02 am
THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS ON HIS GODDAMN TIE SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!?! Oh my god that book was too darling for freaking words
Unhinged, all caps reactions are not usually my thing for books, but uhhh...it was extremely warranted for this one.
Romance novels get a lot of crap, even the ones that end up as NYT Bestsellers and film adaptations, but honestly as someone who dabbles in writing, I am blown away by how well this book was done on every level. The writing was great. The character work was phenomenal. The plotting was tight and well paced. The premise 100% did it's job of getting me in the door.
And it was GENUINELY SMART and genuinely well researched. There is gay history, there is a solid and nuanced understanding of English literature, and when Alex and Henry get to the point of exchanging passages from historical love letters, it was absolutely incredible.
Oh, and DID I MENTION THE STAR WARS ALLUSIONS??? Because the star wars allusions are there, they're wonderful, and honestly I need fanart of the Alex and Henry and Han and Leia mural.
In addition, the book has significant weight to it, because you have two young adults--one who is, in his own words, "very, very gay" and the other who is just discovering his bisexuality--who are struggling with the realities of being public figures trying to overcome the collective conservative prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people in two countries while also being immediate family members to heads of two different states. That is given exactly as much weight as it warrants, and poor Henry just needs a hug and a safe space, because JFC that poor guy is being smothered to death by English conservatism.
There is also Alex and Henry's desire to do good in the world and to actually do something with the places in history they have been handed, and wrestling with what that means when expectations and reality absolutely do not match up. Navigating that as an early twenty-something is never easy, and most of us don't have to do it in the public eye.
Overall, this book was amazing, I loved it, I inhaled it, and I cannot wait to watch the Amazon adaptation. I seriously recommend picking it up, because it's DARLING.
