Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Things aren’t looking so good for humanity in the first teaser trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The fourth movie in the modern version of the franchise, Kingdom takes place several generations after the last film — 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes — when a new leader has taken charge of the apes as they assert themselves as the dominant force on the planet. That leaves little room for humans, of course, who spend most of the trailer either cowering or running. The new film is being directed by Wes Ball, and the cast includes Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992)

The Hand that Rocks the Cradle belongs to that genre of thriller we’ve all kinda seen/know about. You think your life is ok when you suddenly realize that person close to you has snapped and now poses a danger. Think Single White Female or Fatal Attraction. It might not have the same level of thrills or innovation as the most well-known entries but certainly in the top half of the "genre".

Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra) reports her new obstetrician to the police after he molests her during a routine check-up. After other women come forward with similar complaints and Dr. Victor Mott (John de Lancie) commits suicide the Bartels think their troubles are over. They don't realize Mott’s grieving widow (Rebecca De Mornay) has taken a job as their nanny and is just waiting for the right moment to strike.

I'll give credit to the film for being frank with the audience. At no point do you suspect Mrs. Mott (who assumes the name of Peyton) to be anything but sinister. She’s wormed her way into the home of the people she holds responsible for her husband’s death. You watch her intensely, scrutinizing her every move to try and figure out what she’s thinking, what her ultimate plan is. You’re engaged by this wolf in sheep’s clothing and also by Claire, her husband Michael (Matt McCoy), her young daughter Emma (Madeline Zima), and the Bartel's baby. Will the family discover what's happening before it’s too late? What kind of twisted fate does Peyton have in store for them?

Writer Amanda Silver made several intelligent decisions in her writing. The deception is convincing and delightfully twisted. When Peyton makes a mistake, she shows herself as quick-witted and devious. She shrugs off enough suspicion for the film to keep going and escalate. The side characters are elegantly handled. Julianne Moore as Claire’s best friend is a highlight - it's too bad her screen time is limited. Ernie Hudson also appears in the film as a mentally handicapped worker. Him, I kept a very close eye upon and was pleasantly surprised. He leans a little towards being a cuddly saint, but the man has a distinct personality, is integral to the plot, is capable of being both a victim and a hero, and the performance is tasteful.

You might call the setup a little contrived, or say Peyton gets her nanny job a bit too easily. You're not entirely wrong but without the situation, there wouldn’t be a movie so that’s fine. It’s a perfectly enjoyable thriller, though the ending is not particularly strong, simply because it’s the same kind of ending that all of these films have. Still, as a rental, even as a film you could add to your collection and watch every few years or so, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle offers good characters, performances, and thrills. Mulan (2020)

Normally, a $30+ price tag for a family to see a "theatrical new-release" would be a fair deal but it's too high for 2020's Mulan, a movie destined to live in its predecessor's shadow.

In imperial China, young Hua Mulan (Crystal Rao) is told by her parents to hide her qi-powered magical abilities. Such combat-relevant skills are associated with witchcraft in women and more suited for men. Instead, Mulan (played as an adult by Yifei Liu), will bring honour to her family through marriage. When Rouran warriors led by Böri Khan (Jason Scott Lee) and his witch Xianniang (Gong Li) invade the country, Mulan disguises herself as a man and takes her father’s place in the emperor’s army.

Unlike Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin or The Lion King, this remake tries something different. The musical numbers are absent. As are the animal sidekicks and romantic subplot. It features live actors, with a greater emphasis on wuxia-style action. Though it was directed by Niki Caro, it has a Chinese epic feel.

Unfortunately, Yifei Liu has little screen presence and displays no charisma. She’s not exclusively to blame for your resistance towards her character. Turning The Ballad of Mulan into a superhero story wasn't a good choice. Our heroine doesn't need to train hard, strategize, or out-think her opponents because she's never an underdog. Not with her airbender-like abilites.

The next problem is the screenplay. Although you spend just under two hours with these characters, you don’t get to know any of them, which makes the stakes insignificant. Did anyone we were supposed to care about die in this war epic? Beats me. Unless someone’s given a weird name, you don't knoe who’s special and who’s just filling out the crowd. If at least the villain was threatening… but he's as intimidating as a balloon. During the big climax, his actions range from inexplicable to idiotic and suicidal. How could he be a match for Mulan when her kicks can send spears through people’s torso? Oh right, he’s got a witch working for him. Xianniang can single-handedly defeat dozens of warriors but at every opportunity, Böri Khan's men ridicule and insult her. Why’s she working for them instead of being in charge? So she and Mulan have something in common?

There are some major holes in this plot, particularly when you hear what Böri Khan intends to do with the Emperor once he gets grubby paws on him. In another film, you’d ignore the flaws because you’d be having fun. There’s no fun in Mulan at all. When the tiniest hint of humor appears, it’s promptly stomped dead. You’d trade away half the grandiose vistas for 30 seconds’ worth of Eddie Murphy.

The more distant you are from 1998's Mulan, the likelier you chances of enjoying the remake. Even on its own, major flaws on the story and screenplay level make 2020's Mulan a wobbly tale of empowerment that gets worse the more you think about it. (September 10, 2020)
