Starring Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Concords, Clement plays both Lord Joseph Banks and his uncle, Bertie Banks, who sets sail from the Gravy Isles in search of his missing uncle and a mysterious plant called Heaven's Clover. Lord Banks is a botanist strictly trained by his famous Botanist/plant collector uncle. Joseph is an inherently unlikeable guy, who wants/thinks he is likeable--and should be! It's his right as a member of the aristocracy, and as a Gravy man!--but is actually petty, brittle, and has a forbidden lust for plants. No, like a literal lust...like apparently everyone in the world, it's just about whether or not you have a taboo about touching those sumptuous petals. Mmm...petals, stamens... No, no, I mustn't! Satire and quirk all the way down, The Mysterious Secrets of Uncle Bertie's Botanarium. Full of a combination of the Gentlemen Naturalist, Globe-trotting, plant collector era vibes mixed with fictional countries, which poke fun at various cultural stereotypes, and a large dollop of kink, homo-eroticism, and um... phyto-eroticism? Uncle Bertie's pokes fun at the ol' timey British aristocracy the most--mainly in the person of Lord Banks--whose ramrod bearing and ridgidity force him to seek and destroy Heaven's Clover as the ultimate source of pleasure--wicked and unnatural, it must be destroyed to save society from itself! Jeeves and Wooster meets Monty Python meets botany. I have no other way to explain it.

Finished another great new show. What We Do in the Shadows, a TV adaptation of the Taika Waititi/Jermaine Clement Film, is a consistently laugh out loud funny comedy mockumentary about a group of vampires living in New York. It’s very silly, very smart and very, very funny. The 3 leads are all as funny as each other so things don’t feel particularly stale and I think it’s easily better than the film it was based in. What we do in the shadows : the series. When I first heard they were making a TV show of what we do in the shadows I was a bit reluctant about it, I had loved the movie and just thought it was a tough act to follow. Saying that this has been one of the funniest shows I've watched in ages from start to finish the humour is just brilliant and the leads in it are just perfect.
