I DO NOT support 'ALWAYS ONLINE' games - PAYDAY 3 (with friends) then UNINSTALLED
I had several hours of server issues on the first day. I had to create an online account on there server....WHY? EVEN THEN... I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO PLAY!!! Not even single player was working! There is NO offline mode either so I waited till the next day in hopes that the server issue was fixed. IMO 'Always online' games should be abolished. This game had the worst day 1 release of 2023. There are now over 27,000 dislikes on Steam. PLEASE DO NOT support 'always online' games. This is my first & last look at this abomination. UNINSTALLED right after uploading the video unless the devs abandon ONLINE ONLY & give us offline single player I wll not be playing this game again...EVER!

Are you a billy goat Gruff or a Troll?
Tumblr media
(Google Play, 2017)
Whenever I thought of trolls, I always conjured the image of the three billy goats Gruff and the troll that lived under the bridge, and wouldn’t let the goats cross. In recent years I’ve learned of a new troll and they are every bit, if not more, as horrible as the ones under the bridge.
As a parent of a teenage girl, her online citizenship is always a concern. Growing up in the age of technology and social media, she is always connected, whether it be Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr or whatever other social media platform she is using today (Boyd, 2012). Her phone is constantly dinging, a message here, and a like there, and she runs to pick it up every time. For now, everything is peaches and she has not run into anything too heavy online, but what happens when she does.
People her age are so open and accessible online, constantly uploading selfies, commenting here and there, and never really giving a thought to what they put out there. This openness can, and does lead to negativity and trolling, no one likes to be the butt of someone else’s joke (Bergstrom 2011). I think one of the hardest lessons to teach a young person is regarding images. Once you release an image into the world, it can never be retrieved, and you have no control over how it’s used, or what type of comments will be sent your way regarding the image.
The anonymity a computer gives, leaves people, colloquially known as keyboard warriors, believing they can say what they want with no repercussions, no one knows who they are, so there’s no backlash.  Remarks that they would never openly sprout in a face to face conversation/confrontation, come spewing onto the screen.
Tumblr media
(know your meme, 2017)
With the internet still in its infancy, why people troll, on a psychological level is still being researched, but for one young Victorian man it makes him ‘happy’ (Adelaide Now, 2012). Ben, not his real name, takes enjoyment from other people’s anger, feeding off it. Ben spends up to 70 hours a week trolling websites for people to enrage. Now, 70 hours is a lot of time, so as you can imagine, Ben doesn’t have a job or time for friends or many friends at all - I can’t imagine why...but he says he doesn’t feel alone because he is part of a community. Ben is the quintessential key board warrior, tough, but only when protected by the anonymity of his computer; he didn’t use his real name for the article, and I’m guessing he didn’t use it online while trolling either. He also only trolls a page or a site once for fear of being arrested.
Tumblr media
(Lloyd, 2017)
So next time you’re on line you have a choice, you can be like Ben and be the troll or you can be the bill goat, Gruff, which one would you rather be?

Just heading down to my ‘local’!
Instagram.  Facebook.  SnapChat. Twitter.  LinkedIn.  I don’t know about you but this is how I have been ‘catching up with mates’ lately. What once was a catch up down at the pub or café, for me in this age of “Go! Do-more-be-everywhere-but-make-sure-you-relax-but-not-without-your-phone-I-might-need-to-contact-you” paradox is now more conveniently located on my Samsung S9 screen whilst I lay in bed absentmindedly watching Netflix and trying to ‘switch off’.  Right...
Tumblr media
I muttered an ‘oh, yeahhh’ in agreement when reading Danah Boyd attempting to define what counts when asked ‘how many hours per day do you spend online?’ (Boyd 2012), and it got me to thinking – am I ever really off?  Why am I always on?  No, I am offline when I am with my friends though, right? *snapchats social outing to prove I go out*
If I am going to be honest, I find myself more online to fill the sometimes vast space left by boredom, and probably more honestly to assess how I am doing in life compared to my contemporaries, some I know, most I do not.  And also to post daily on Instagram.  More recently in an attempt to produce curated content and establish (how ironic) my own little online community.  Also, I will finally admit that I actually cannot recall the days of what it felt like to not be ‘on’ and contactable 24/7.
I have this conversation with my friends every now and then about ‘back in the day’ when you would leave the house for the day, sans mobile device.  Some families had a home phone with an answering machine, others didn’t.  We wrote letters and posted them, we passed notes in school.  We rode or walked over to each-others houses and actually hung out.  Even more shockingly, we talked on the phone when we were at home and able to be reached. Like for real – talked!
Flash forward to today and I feel like I am missing an appendage if for 30 seconds I can’t locate my phone.  “OMG!” I think, “I AM MISSING LITERALLY EVERYTHING??”…
Tumblr media
Not only am I always on engaging with and following my peers via the various social media avenues, I am also contributing to my online community through posting, liking, commenting, friending, snapping, doing ‘stories’, tagging my location to connect with followers who may be at the same location/event et cetera et cetera.
Wilken and McCosker comment on the ‘pursuit of visibility (Blatterer 2010, p.79) through our practice of self-disclosure via the aforementioned contributions to said online community/s – “it is not that we inhabit two distinct spheres – one public and the other private – that have been broken down by emerging forms of social media and social networking tools.  Rather, we are always managing the aspects of ourselves that we make accessible to others, and communication tools simply afford new possibilities and new anxieties” (Wilken & McCosker 2014, pp. 291–295).
I would agree that I absolutely actively manage the aspects of myself and my life which I wish to make accessible to others.  With all of the filters, gifs and emojis that I can tastefully manage (LOL).
So, friends out there in the internet ether, I will attempt to catch you up in person at our local, but let’s be honest – I will more likely just snapchat you a story and mention you in my next #insta post!
