So after the Isopod incident I think I'll take it as a sign. My initial idea of "Yeah I'll only keep large bugs" was probably correct. I think I just do better with bigger bugs like Kolchek or my stick insects. So yeahhh going forward I think I'll stick to that. I LOVE keeping bugs so much but I may have to become a "Big bug person" rather than a bug person in general. (Works for me, I always liked big bugs more anyway tbh)

GREAT ask i had a lot of fun thinking about this. Verna would be a spiny dogfish. i thought some kind of predatory fish, and especially a shark, would be fitting for him, but not anything too big or cool looking. unfortunately he still ended up looking somewhat cool. He would be about the same height and build as his squid self. Cress would be a nudibranch. i wanted him to be cute and had a hard time thinking of him as something that looked too far from an inkling, and nudibranches are still colorful mollusks (also flow made me think of orange, so that had an impact). I imagine nudibranches are shorter than inklings, he would only come up to the shoulders of his inkling self. for the bonus question...

a few years ago, after deciding that "maybe i could have A Youtuber Rantsona for my channel" i genuinely considered not using my inklingsona, and instead representing myself with a splatoonified version of my bugsona, a praying mantis, and turning that into mantis shrimp. i couldn't get a design to stick, felt too busy and crustaceans are hard to draw (left image). but now that there are Canon mantis shrimps to work from in splatoon, i went and took another crack at it just now. i like it a lot more now. it would be really fucking funny if i just switched to a mantis shrimp sona without warning but i am in too deep already LOL

what a rare joy it is to watch hummingbird moths pollinate and sip sweet nectar. i held my hand out to one and it fluttered past so quickly i could feel the wind its wings created.

Bugs gate! They are bugs* now, they fight in the tall grass and drink from rain drops. This started when I was drawing my fey astarion, thinking what bugs would they all be. :""D close ups and explanation for my picks bellow!

Wyll: He is a Weewyll :D yeah i chose weevil based on name only :"D but weevils are amazing, prettiest bugs and they tend to have long protrusions on their heads which reminds me of his horns. I also gave him acorn shoulderpads because of acorn weevil Karlach: Stag beetle! I knew she would be one of the big beetles, rhino and goliath were also considered but stags have nice pinchers that work well for her horns Gale: Scarab beetle. Gale was a tough one, I considered orbweaver but i dont think spiders fit him, Scarabeus is bug most associated with magic, also they are often depicted with orbs bc of dung rolling :"D and beetle makes sense for him Astarion: mosquito of course. I considered also vampire moth, or one of the blood drinking butterfly species, but I know in my heart he is a mosquito Minthara: Black widow. An easy pick for her :"""D I didn't even consider anything other than spider but assasin bug would also be cool they are my favourite bugs Halsin: He is a mole cricket! Now this pick makes sense because in my language, slovak, we call mole cricket medvedík, which translates to little bear (they are also called Krtonôžka, which is literally mole feeted :"D) so I had to pick it. Also both mole crickets and Halsin have nice big arms Shadowheart: She is a lunar moth! Lunar- selune, its self explenatory. Moths being nocturnal and goth fits her Lae'zel: Praying mantis! I considered making her a frog but decided to make them all bugs. Mantises are aliens among the bugs, and they are perfect hunters.

Here is a weirder mashup that I thought could work. Praying mantis blue heron. When I think of animals similar to a praying mantis I can only think of the stalking and snagging approach of water birds. Maybe in a world with huge praying mantises they can also fill that niche.

art the clown headcanons

art loves sweets and candies. he has some in his bag like werther's originals that he pulls out and eats from time to time

he's also a fan of sweet drinks like flavored milk (he prefers strawberry milk over chocolate milk) and juices. his favorite juices are apple and mango juice

he likes to try on jewelry especially yours. he's not a fan of necklaces as most don't fit (thanks to his big noggin') but he does like bracelets (his big hands somehow fit in those). he will try on rings but won't take off his gloves so he wears them on the upper parts of his fingers

even though art doesn't like getting wet you will see him sometimes stick his hand outside a window or door while it's raining to feel the rain drops. he's scared of thunder but finds lightning fascinating

art will unfortunately step on bugs he finds inside the house (unless you physically push him away and take the bug/bugs outside) but he does seem to like praying mantises, ladybugs, and dragonflies

in the spring art will spend time tending to your garden. he likes to use a watering can to water the plants and likes watching the vegetables grow. art gets excited to help you pick them once they are ripe

he doesn't like vegetables in general (he's a giant kid let's be real) but if he has to eat them he prefers homegrown over store-bought

in the summer you will find art wearing his usual outfit but with a large hat and large sunglasses. he will either be sitting underneath an umbrella or in the shade. he will watch you from time to time but will be occupied with a book, his tools, etc. good luck trying to get him to swim or sunbathe

his favorite holiday is christmas (ofc) and he loves baking christmas cookies, decorating the tree, and sitting by the fire watching movies. some christmas movies he enjoys are home alone and the polar express

art loves learning new things and has to keep his brain busy. you will find him on many occasions curled up on the coach reading your books, newspapers, and magazines

art has some books in his bag as well. he enjoys reading all types of genres but especially likes mystery, science fiction, history, and true crime

he will also read the user manuals that most people throw away and will take things apart like the remote and vacuum cleaner (he always puts them back together correctly however)

art likes watching the morning and evening news (and yes he will silently laugh at the sad stories)

if you happen to mention that you need new clothes art will go out and steal some for you even if they are the wrong size and type. he will present them to you like gifts :)

Aradia Megido - Maroon Ghost Moth (Elhamma australasiae)

Moths have been repeatedly portrayed as a sign of death. Also, their fluffiness matches the one of Aradia's hair XD. When I read this one's name it was inevitable (ghost???, maroon??, literally her oh my gooood).

Tavros Nitram - Question Mark Butterfly (Polygonia interrogationis)

Mostly based off of the Summoner and Rufioh having wings, I didn't want to make it a monarch butterfly because Tavros is in no way royalty.

Sollux Captor - Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

Pretty self explanatory, Sollux always had a connection (and obsession) with bees. They also sting, which is kind of a metaphor for the psionics.

Karkat Vantas - Seven Spot Ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata)

Ladybirds are always seen as special, even though this instance is not a mutation per se, it's special and red. Also, ladybirds are commonplace pests (which is kind of what Karkat is to HIC).

Nepeta Leijon - Pale Green Assassin Bug (Zelus luridus)

I looked up some good bug hunters and I got assassin bugs, nepeta is the mightiest of huntresses, so it fits.

Kanaya Maryam - Green Headed Ant (Rhytidoponera metallica)

I was doubting wether to make Kanaya an ant or a silk moth, but ultimately, moths are a better representation of Aradia, and ants mimic jade-blood's function in troll society better. A part from being green, this species of ant apparently has a nice bite, which is representative of Kanaya's fierceness.

Terezi Pyrope - Ebony Jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata)

I am aware that the dragonfly pictured is male, just ignore that lol, headcanon the trolls as hermaphroditic (i will post about their biological cycle hehe). Dragonflies are said to be insect's best predators, Terezi is also a vicious and precise hunter, if not of other trolls literally, of outcomes and possibilities (she is intelligent, and a Seer of Mind).

Vriska Serket - Peacock Tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica)

Also pretty self explanatory, it's a blue spider, therefore Vriska Serket. Spiders in general are already a good representation of how she is percieved (with fear lol). Yea, simple explanation.

Equius Zahhak - "Pure Blue" Giant Flower Beetle (Mecynorhina torquata)

The strongest of bugs are beetles (among some types of ants, who are better described as proportionally strongest). This particular one is also pretty big and strong, and coincidentally presents this type of coloration.

Gamzee Makara - Purple-Winged Grasshopper (Titanacris albipes)

Originally was going to be a praying mantis, but the orchid mantis was just too perfect for Feferi. Locusts also have ties to religion and mythology, which was my main focus for finding Gamzee's insect (they have been, fittingly, a symbol of destruction for eons).

Eridan Ampora - Canopy Mosquito (Sabethes cyaneus)

Tbh, I based most of this decision off of the fact that Eridan is annoying (I don't hate him, it's just his personality, unfortunately). Also, mosquitos breed in water (at least that's what my parents always told me) which matches the aquatic theme.

Feferi Peixes - Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)

Feferi is the troll I had the most trouble with. Originally I tried keeping up with the aquatic theme and had found Ranatra linearis, a stickbug that looks like a mantis and hunts little fish. I discarded the option because even though it was aquatic, the connections with Feferi kind of ended there.

I then tried to search for a bug that had "empress" in the name, and had chosen Megapomponia imperatoria, a giant as fuck cicada. It didn't convince me either though.

I chose the orchid mantis because, mantises are cutthroat, good hunters and pink as fuck. If that's not a description of the tyrian blood caste I don't know what is.

I wanted to make one of these drawing comparisons to different species of ants. There exist some cool af ants out there, I might do it.

Millipedes don't bother me as much but I'd still like them to remain away from me. Centipedes and millipedes ARE really cool tho. Arthropods in general really.

I've seen a really big one about the length of my forearm in a pet store once ( I was there for spiders ) (I also screamed when I realized it was there bc the container was right in front of my face so it was a jumpscare but it's fine )
