This might be a risky hot take but
Some of you "Gregory Defenders" are starting to annoy the absolute hell out of me
And this isn't about the "whether Gregory is innocent or guilty" side of the argument you're on, but about how obnoxious and unhinged some of y'all are about it regardless of the "side" you're on.
Not everyone in the fandom is going to like Gregory, nor will everyone see him as innocent. Some may even say he's a cold and manipulative backstabber, or that he's only popular because of "male protag privilege". And you know what, that's actually all okay and valid. And you know why?
Because Gregory is not real.
"He's only like 12!!!!" he's not real.
"He's just a child!!!" he's not real.
"He's not guilty he was brainwashed!!" he's not real.
"He's only trying to protect himself he doesn't deserve hate!!!" Let people dislike/hate him if they want, it won't affect Gregory at all because he's not real.
It's not like people are bullying a real child. He's a fictional character, in case y'all ever forgot that detail.
Actually no, I am SURE y'all forgot that detail, with how you treat people who dislike him as if it was an actual moral issue and paint them as evil for not sharing your image of your perfect cinnamon roll gremlin boy.
"How DARE you say Gregory's not innocent? How can you HATE him he's just a kid!!! It's not his fault STOP punishing him!!! How evil do you have to be to blame a literal child!!!? You're disgusting!!!" HE'S NOT FUCKING REAL.
Where in the fucking hell is it okay to label a person as evil or bully them for like, liking Cassie (another fictional character in case you also forgot) over Gregory??
Yes this also goes to y'all who approach people unprompted to tell them like a lawyer why Gregory is not to blame, especially with how condescending and obnoxious you are about it, pretty much reeking the vibe of "I'm telling you how wrong you are for blaming Gregory because you're clearly stupid for not believing otherwise, here's why I'm right and why my vision of this character is the correct one."
I'm sick of "Gregory defense lawyers" coming to my inbox after my ramblings about Cassie blaming Gregory for the elevator drop all condenscendingly like "Ummm actually you can't do that because Gregory is innocent it was all the Mimic in case you missed the details blah blah-" did I fucking ask???
(Unless people seem confused or are new to the fandom and they ask, then you may be entitled to tell them... but I still suggest being unbiased and focusing on canon aspects only rather than your personal opinion about it.)
Don't even get me started on y'all's flat out hostility towards people who don't like Gregory
"If you think Gregory did anything wrong ever I'LL FUCKING FIGHT YOU" is this really all that necessary to protect a kid that doesn't even exist??? Is it worth ending friendships or snuffing out potential new friendships with other real people over??? Worth bullying and witch-hunting other real people whose only apparent crime was loving the same franchise as you? How can you be proud of that?
(Unless you mean you will fight people in that memey or shitpost way then idc keep being a silly little guy actually)
"But I adore Gregory, and he's my favorite character!! It makes me really upset when people hate him/make art/write about him being guilty or blamed, or say Cassie is better! I don't agree with it!!" ... then why are you making yourself upset by checking out content about Gregory that you don't like? Like... dude.
People are going to create stuff about Gregory (or any other fictional character really,) that won't always align with you. And they're entitled to do it, no matter how wrong you think they are! Instead of policing what other people create about your blorbo, just look away and seek content about them that you actually like. If a particular creator's vision on Gregory is too much of a deal-breaker for you, just block and blacklist and move on. Or create the content you want yourself instead of badgering other people.
Also keep in mind that Gregory being antagonized in a fic/art/etc doesn't always translate to the authors hating him, chances are they're just writting it from other characters' perspectives who may have whatever beef with him in the given setting, so don't go jumping to conclusions either. And even if the antagonism does come from the author's personal bias, that still gives you no right to harrass them anyways.
I will continue liking Cassie over Gregory and I do think she's better and I will continue rambling about Cassie hating Gregory for believing he betrayed her even if it was the Mimic, because it is an interesting scenario, and I personally think the whole GGY thing was dumb and unnecessary (he could still have been an interesting character as just an unlucky homeless boy without any sinister plot-twist.) That's it; There's no fucking need to make it about morality, ffs. If you don't like that, ignore it, or unfollow me if it's that much of a deal-breaker for you.
All y'all are doing is giving reasonable Gregory fans a bad name, and actually making people dislike him further by oversaturating him and forcing him into a source of stress and disdain rather than enjoyment for them, where people start actually getting sick of seeing him around (and I feel that myself already.)
Let people dislike Gregory for whatever reason.
By the way...
You "Gregory Haters" are annoying me as well
As entitled as you are to your opinion about this annoying manipulative liar of a brat, there are people who share a different sentiment about him. Let them.
You don't have to reblog or comment on someone's post how much they adore Gregory to tell why you hate him, or go to the spaces of Gregory fans to spew why you hate so much this little guy they like. That's just fucking mean and rude. Make your own post, or go to the spaces that share your opinion.
Quit making people feel bad for liking a character you dislike. If you don't like Gregory, why are you even bothering to check out content about him, then? Check out content about characters you LIKE. I bet that'd make you much happier than spending your time regurgitating your hate over someone's creation about a character they like but you don't and unsurprisingly start an argument about it. Look for things you like, block and blacklist stuff and people about your hated character if you gotta but leave them alone
Let people like Gregory for whatever reason, too.
Let people see Gregory however way they see fit.
Because this bears repeating: He's not real. He's a fictional character. He's a tool. Let people use him however way they see fit to drive a story or scenario; that's his purpose, as a fictional character.

THIS ^^^^
I understand learning art yourself can be hard and frustrating but it can also be so rewarding and making art with other humans in a way that respects their time and effort as well is absolutely glorious and so many people are missing out by actively trying to take the human out of the art.
Do 'bad' doodles!! There is nothing more human and incredibly soulful than a human's 'bad' doodles!! And the more you do them, the better you get at doing 'better' doodles.
Art is meant to be fun, not some grandiose competition. If people are shitting on your art (art you've made, not things made by inputting writing into a machine trained on non-consensually obtained art by existing artists) then they can get fucked. Art comes in all forms and is most beautiful when it comes from YOU, regardless of your level of technical skill or experience.
Please stop thinking your art has to 'look good'. It just has to come from YOU and then it will be beautiful and evolve as you evolve.
That is more beautiful than the most technically skillful works in existence.
Break down the concept of what is art. That's the first thing my teacher taught me when I started, because I have crippling perfectionism and felt like shit and couldn't bring myself to draw and remind myself I was a 'failure' which meant I couldn't practice to get better. My teacher showed me all kinds of art from different cultures and periods of history and we talked about their meaning and significance and questioned what made them 'good' art. At the end of the day, it wasn't the prettiest things so much as the things that moved me and showed glimpses of actual humanity in them that meant the most to me. Sometimes those were technically skillful drawings. Many times they were earlier periods of art when human comprehension of capturing the world around them was still evolving and shifting through what focuses had the most cultural value and use/importance/relatability, children's art, quick sketches of human moments and yes, shitposts and stick figure memes and 'shitty' drawings on tumblr capturing a feeling or a conversation or a moment in time or a general societal commentary.
This began the process of helping me shed shitty perfectionist judgemental beliefs about my skills and actually be capable of practicing, because I stopped living in fear of the moments I would fuck up and my brain would inevitably begin to shit on me. I can be at peace with my mistakes more and more frequently now, and the difference it has made in drawing ability has been amazing. I am so much happier and am even beginning to believe I may in fact be capable of learning to make the cool art I see all the amazing artists around me create every day. If I just practice as long as they have.
Reconnect with people around you and just make your own art. You are enough, I promise you.
(And if you want cool art for a design you have it's called commissioning someone who has spent thousands of hours going through the process you don't want to do, or saving up if you can't yet, or just making peace with the fact you'll have to wait or see if someone wants to pick up the concept and do it for free. Or bite the bullet, be nice to yourself for daring to draw 'bad' art and go through the gruelling process everyone else has to develop the skills yourself. I promise it's worth it. I promise.)
ai generated images make me increasingly sad and tired the more i see them in more and more casual contexts. i dont know how to explain, but it just fills the world with a bunch of nothing. no matter how visually stunning the pictures might be, there's nothing behind it for me. no dedication, no emotions, no feelings, no hard work or creativity, nothing i can truly think about, admire or enjoy. i dont think thats how art is supposed to be

i've seen a shift in attitude towards ai generated content recently and i just wanted to reaffirm my views on it.
i don't care if you want to abolish copyright or don't believe in private property or whatever, taking someone's work without their permission and using it to train a machine to perform the task without them is scummy.
if you type a sentence into a website and it spits back an image at you, you did not make that image.
it's bad for the environment.
it should never be used in a professional capacity instead of hiring human writers/artists.
not all artificial intelligence is generative, with image detection helping identify cancer. so to denounce machine learning as a whole is a little ignorant.
ai generated writing and images have objectively made the internet worse. ai generated news articles show up in results, my parents have sent me ai pictures multiple times without knowing they were ai, it's been used in propaganda, and its supporters are just reincarnated nft bros.
websites that allow image hosting should automatically scan pictures that were uploaded, and if they're ai, include a disclaimer underneath them.
i can't see it being useful even as a tool in art unless some company comes out with live watercolor/bleed simulations. there's also things like vocaloid and synthv which have started to use machine learning, but those are based on hired singers for one, hyperspecific for two, and require you to place all the notes and write the lyrics. i do not count this as justification for using ai voices to make people and characters sing things because one, they're most often done without consent, and two, the programs used for that afaik just apply a new voice to a pre-existing vocal performance which still requires no input on the "producer's" part.
for shitposts and the like oftentimes you would be better off learning to use an image manipulation program like photoshop (which you can get for free if you know where to look)
can it be useful? sure, i guess. but always less useful than if you had a person. want art? commission an artist or draw it yourself. a photorealistic image? photoshop. want to write a book? do it yourself or hire a writer. need someone to bounce ideas off of? talk to a person.
generally, at least for me, it's just overall off-putting. especially image generation. and this is not the "real reason" or the ends which i'm making up means to defend, this is just an additional nail in the coffin as to why i can't justify the use of generative ai.
i can see the traps that people might fall into. talking to character.ai because they don't have friends or anyone to roleplay with or are too embarrassed to ask. resorting to mid journey because you just don't like your own art and want to get ahead. wanting to hear a character sing their own theme song but being bad at voices. but i still don't understand them. because the solution to all those problems is to practice your craft. write stories or find strangers under your pseudonym if you're embarrassed to roleplay. just keep drawing if you're frustrated with your art. study a character's voice and work on an impression. literally 100% of the time it will turn out better.
i don't think it's "actually praxis" to use generative ai. you're not sticking it to anyone, you're just providing flimsy justification. ok that's it.

you said that there is no inbalance between likes and reblogs, and that people made it up. how can you be so blind when it is so, so painfully obvious? this used to be a blogging site, but no one reblogs anymore, and most of the art/edits go unnoticed. and this is not just me, all of my content creator friends are experiencing the same thing, many of them even quit editing because no one even reblogs anymore, and the content never gets spread around. the only stuff that gets lots of reblogs nowadays are funny shitposts or tiktok/twitter screenshots. fandom gifsets only reach 2k+ if they are on the trending page. are you aware that this site is no longer the home of fandom, but the home of shitposts and leftovers from other apps? if likes AT LEAST showed up on dashboard like on twitter, it would do miracles to us. please consider making changes to the like button before you lose all your content creators.
i believe you must be referencing this and this?
first, i don't believe anyone "made it up". i know people (including other members of tumblr staff) are worried about this, and for good reason. but let's break this down a bit more.
your specific screenshot is a cumulative total over time, and reblogs repeat much more often than likes, since people can reblog many times and can only like once, so of course the further back you look, the more the ratio will be better for older posts. also, the interface back then didn't even separate the like count from the reblog count, so how would anyone in 2015 even know the ratio? probably by looking at their activity, but even then, if you're actually a popular blog, you're probably drowning in activity items and can't "see" the ratio.
i can almost guarantee you that if you were counting the ratio for the first 3 months of a post's life in 2015, and compared it to the first 3 months of a post's life now, you'd see very little divergence in the reblog-to-like ratio. i literally have access to see this ratio across the whole platform over time, it's part of my job, and i can't find strong evidence that the ratio has changed. i was really worried about this too!
the big caveat i'll concede is that for some individual blogs, the ratio may be different today than it was 7 years ago. if you're comparing tumblr in the universe of 2015 to tumblr in today's ecosystem, you're in for a hard comparison no matter what, because the world is not like it was in 2015. that's not altogether a bad thing. times change. we have to adapt with it. some blogs that were popular in 2015 simply aren't going to be as popular today; and likewise, some popular blogs today wouldn't have been popular in 2015.
also, "if likes AT LEAST showed up on dashboard like on twitter, it would do miracles to us" -- they do! it's called "Based on your likes", and you probably didn't realize you turned it off in your Dashboard Preferences, so you never see it. it's on by default for everyone, unless they turn it off. it's a really amazing discovery mechanism for many, many people on tumblr. that's part of what we've been trying to do to adapt the platform to any such changes in behavior over time.
regardless of whether or not the ratio is changing, though, i definitely agree with you that there's more for us to do to try to keep content creators around. making it clearer how content spreads around the platform is definitely one of those things. stay tuned, because there are lot of improvements in that regard that we've been working on. but they don't look the same as what we may have done in 2015 tumblr terms, they look closer to what other mainstream platforms do today.

Collab poetry anon here: I'm actually also usually not into theories about other folks writing Shakespeare's stuff, because who cares and also I don't think any of them are persuasive. There is unlikely to be any smoking gun historical evidence that proves any theory right or wrong so it's mostly just academic vanity and a penchant for conspiracy theory. The plays are good, I'd rather focus on the work. But I set my eye-rolling aside for theories that are obvs false (aliens made him do it!!!) and are more about poking fun at the tendency to theorize about the authorship of his work than believing he didn't write the work. My hottest take was the one that was actually the most tongue in cheek. (The middle one you will pry from my cold dead hands: they write poetry together, that is immutable TRUTH.) That said, there is actualfax reason to believe that Shakespeare collaborated on many of his plays, so it would also be funny if in TOG world the three of them were writing the sonnets trying to out do each other. That retains Shakespeare's authorship, just with some added Joe/Nicky collaboration. Just three dudes trying to annoy one another by one upping each other. The dark lady is Andy and Joe and Nicky are like S T O P.
I'm also obsessed with the idea that Joe & Nicky cowrite a bunch of stuff together, not just poetry: Plays!!!!!!! Novels! Comic books! Music! Even if something starts as Joe's project (which I suspect is how many usually start), I can't imagine him NOT talking about it with Nicky and Nicky not becoming involved.
YES to all of this. And I LOVE the idea of them collaborating together with Shakespeare... are Joe and Nicky Beaumont and Fletcher...
In my head I’m also fitting this in with the incredible shitpost from a while ago about Nicky as the fair youth, so like. Shakespeare writing love poems to BOTH Nicky and Joe and their response being like, oh sweetheart no, and then writing sonnets in return which are ever-so-slightly mocking him. Yes yes an excellent love triangle that isn’t really that at all.
Also I completely agree about them collaborating on everything. Part of my issue with thinking “Joe does this thing and Nicky does this thing and they’re different things that never meet” is that like. They’re almost 1,000 years old, they have surely tried pretty much everything. Including writing and drawing and painting and music. In that time you KNOW they regularly got bored and collaborated on epistolary 18th century romance novels they published anonymously and scandalous plays and operettas and everything. Everything! They have had this gorgeous shared long life and they want to share all of it.
Especially given that like, ideas of a single genius author being behind a work of art was not really a thing until recently. When i was writing about early lyrics and having Joe singing poetry for Nicky in the 12th century... that’s a period of intense poetic development but also oral transmission, and people using kharjas written by other people in their work. Because it was better to have something good than something you write yourself, if you can’t manage it. And we have these different “corrupted” versions of some kharjas, because they change with transmission. That’s my shit! I like to think of Joe and Nicky mock-competing to see who can come up with the best closing line to a couplet, composing whole poems this way. And then years later they remember the poems but not who wrote what. Except for when there’s a flourish that they know must be Joe, or an image that has to be Nicky. But even then: where does one end and the other begin? What if they were mocking or imitating each other’s style?
Galaxy brain: Joe and Nicky wrote the Isle of Dogs and got chased out of London for it
