One thing that caught my attention in Piofiore is how the power dynamics play into the character choices, and how some characters are actually more privileged than the others yet due to how the political situation is set up, they don’t see that. And they perceive they have the right to do whatever they want because they see that they were wronged.

Like, Yang and Orlok, they are actually the most disadvantaged out of the lot, for different reasons. Yet they are the ones being framed as the ‘disrupters’ (also for different reasons XD). While Dante (and the Falzone) as well as Gilbert (the Visconti), they are morally ‘superior’ regardless of them actually being moral or not. This automatically gives Dante and Gilbert (and to a lesser extent Nicola) the ‘right’ to set the rules of who deserves to feel wronged and who deserves ‘rights’.

Yang is a horrible mafia boss but so are Dante and Gilbert, it is just that they are more organised and have a rules based system that makes them more ‘acceptable’ as they are natives to Burlone and have strong control over it. Yang and the Lao Shu were always at a disadvantage as they are the foreigners and to have some form of control in this new environment, their approach was more on the overt side. But at the end of the day, all families are criminals through and through.

Where Orlok comes in is the fact although he is part of the church which is politically the more superior out of them all, he was from the beginning groomed as a mere tool, so even in the church’s system, he is ‘inferior’. Then as he starts to break out of the systematic programming he underwent, and began to form his own goals and identity, this clashed with burlone’s mafia system. He became this ‘annoying’ outlier that has disrupted the order of things, and as such was targeted for just merely trying to go his own way. But how I see it is that Gilbert and Dante saw him as someone who does not have the right to actually go on his life even when they both knew very well that he is much less privileged than them and has been a victim of the church. Because with how the dynamics at place are set up, Gilbert and to a greater extent Dante, saw themselves as the ‘victims’ when they are far from being ones.

I feel Nicola understands this more than the other two as he is kind of also in a less privileged position, and he wanted to free Dante from this messed up system imo in part because he understands that this set up is toxic.

I finished Gil’s best ending today 💅 He’s my favorite hands-down. Started the finale today, but didn’t get too far.

I also went back and got Nicola’s tragic ending for fun, and am in the process of getting Yang’s tragic ending.

Nicola’s tragic ending was exactly what I expected, and yet I was… surprised that he actually got me to feel bad for him 😭 But not for long, though. I hope he explodes (affectionate)🕺

Anyway that’s it, I’ll update with my thoughts on the finale when I get there, and most likely jump in occasionally to be like “WOW this other ending I got was crazy!”

Nicola rounded the corner in the hallway, feeling more disquieted as his search for Liliana continued to produce no results. She wouldn’t leave, and even if she did… He came to a stop, his mind turning over the possibilities of what to do if that were the case. Alternate plans upon plans upon contingencies were cycling through his head, some of them leading to particularly dark scenarios– only in the most dire and unlikely cases, of course.

With his eyes out of focus, and the shadow of gloom growing around him, movement from outside the window caught his attention. The sunshine filtered into the room, lighting up the floor and pane like it was calling to him, beckoning Nicola to return to the present; outside the window he saw the woman he was looking for. Lili was bathed in shining splendor, the spring weather brightening her features, more beautiful to Nicola than the flowering garden she was standing in.

The strategies he was concocting faded to the back of his mind, while the corners of his mouth quirked upwards from his unintentional frown. And like it was in response to his own feeling of relief, Lili also smiled, though she wasn’t looking towards the mansion at Nicola like he was looking at her. That’s when Nicola noticed– she wasn’t alone.

His face fell, and his footsteps echoed through the empty room as he hurried towards the back garden. Whoever it was that earned her smile would regret infringing on his love. He was in a foul mood already, and that person just volunteered to take the brunt of his discontent.

Nicola stepped out of the mansion onto a beautifully mosaiced walkway in the courtyard. Neatly manicured hedges lined the walls that gave way to smaller shrubbery dotted with budding flowers, and eventually into a well-cultivated variety of decorative perennials that kept the garden lively all year while the annuals bloomed into season when the weather was right. His leather shoes clicked against the stone, heralding his arrival before he had the chance to confront Liliana and the man that was overstepping his place.

However, once the two were in sight, his steps slowed and a cold pang lanced his chest. His cousin - Dante - was the only other person with Liliana. They were a respectable distance apart, and surely Dante wouldn’t be attempting to court his lover, but they were also alone in the gardens and Nicola didn’t like when anyone was alone with his love - even Dante.

For a moment, he hesitated. Dante meant the world to him, but Liliana had quickly grown to be as important, if not more - a thought he hadn’t really put time into considering seeing as how he never imagined he’d have to measure the two. But now he wondered just who he should be disappointed with.

Could it be both? That must be it.

Nicola placed a placid smile on lips and called out to announce himself. “Cara mia, I was looking for you. You’re not at all where I expected you to be.”

Dante and Lili turned towards him, and while one of them brightened to see him, the other looked on with cool indifference.

“Nicola! I didn’t expect you to be home this early in the day.” Lili moved to join him halfway to where she had been standing, wrapping her arms around him in a greeting that eased the pain in his chest.

He placed a hand on her back, almost protectively, as he kept his eyes on his cousin. “I’m glad to see you, Dante, it saves me the effort of locating you as well.”

“Has there been a development?” Dante asked.

“You could say so. Though I don’t want my sweetheart to have to hear business details.” Despite the pleasant way he looked and the musical lilt to his voice, there was a sharpness to Nicola’s words and movements. He brought a hand up to cup the back of Lili’s head as he turned to press a soft kiss to the side of her forehead - it was purposeful and punctuated with a pointed look at Dante. Nicola might have been smiling, but his eyes were not.

“Come by my office later.”

“Of course.” Nicola kept his words short. Lili turned in his arms, letting him lock her next to him in a loose embrace. “Now if you will excuse us, I need a moment with my love.”

Dante gave a non-committal noise, his eyes shifting from Nicola to Lili, and Nicola struggled to keep his smile. His eyes darkened and he stepped around her, putting himself between them, rather than letting her stay in front of Dante. Reaching back, he clamped a hand on Lili’s arm, and with steps that betrayed his agitation, quickly escorted Lili towards the walls of the large estate - but not the main doorway to the courtyard.

Dante gave a sigh as Nicola dragged Liliana off. He’d have to have Leo check up on her later, but it was probably best if he put some distance between himself and Liliana for a while.

Lili struggled to keep up with Nicola’s long and hasty strides. “Nicola?” He didn’t even look at her as he pulled her along and her heart began hammering wildly. “Wait, you’re going too fast.”

“Just bear with it, my love. We’ll stop soon enough.” His voice was still as sweet as ever, but his actions were anything but.

He wove through another stoned-off flower bed, and Lili realized he was taking her down a path between the bushes she hadn’t seen before. It looked like some sort of maintenance route for the gardeners to manage the foliage, with the way it was hidden and how it brought them down a side of the mansion between two sets of walls.

Once they crossed the corner of the house, and shade enveloped them in gloom from the two buildings they were nestled between, Nicola stopped and turned on her. Liliana barely had time to catch her breath before Nicola backed her against the wall, setting a hand near her head to cage her in. She looked up at him, her eyes wide and questioning. She could feel the cold stone through her dress, and it leeched the warm early summer heat from her body.

She didn’t dare take her eyes off him. She drew in short breaths, trying to calm her racing heart. He stared back at her, whatever thoughts were running through his head was a mystery to her, but she could see the way they were spinning him up. She knew this look of his, though never to this extreme. It was a precursor to those times he clung to her, where he held her so tightly that it hurt, when he whispered his love and devotion over and over again as if he was trying to convince her and himself.

Nicola felt that darkness rising in him as he stared down at Lili. He kept that part of him smothered down in the depths of himself– he struggled to keep it below the surface, despite it always being there, despite it always being a part of him. His love had always been tainted, but he tried his best to keep it at bay. There were times, though, times when those inky tendrils wove their way into his actions, and he questioned the validity of his feelings and his mind.

Now was one of those times.

Now he had let that darkness shackle her.

He had let it take hold and he pulled her into a place that mirrored the murkiness that lurked within him.

No more than a foot away the sun shone and the world continued on bright and beautiful. But here in this alley, it was cold and silent and just the two of them, where no one else could get to her.

“I was surprised to see you with Dante.” Nicola’s voice sounded hollow to his ears, but he knew that he could lie convincingly without even thinking about it, and he was sure Lili had no idea what was hidden behind his words.

I found you with another man. Am I not enough?

“I ran into him when taking a walk.” Liliana answered, trying to keep her voice even and calm.

“Does that happen often? My love, I worry about you. What if it was someone else you ran into?” Nicola smiled, his free hand moved under Lili’s chin, fingertips delicately holding it angled so she continued to look up at him.

There was a large number of men who moved about the family house. Men who weren’t as upstanding as his cousin. Men who wouldn’t bat an eye at committing heinous acts to fulfill their own desires. She was his. And even then, he knew there were some men who would still be tempted.

You’re too beautiful. You’re too pure.

“No, it doesn’t. I’m alone most of my day, besides the maids and you. The whole house gives me a wide berth, Nicola.” Lili knew he was the one keeping others away, and she had allowed it because she didn’t need anyone but him.

“But not Dante.” Nicola added, his smile taking on an edge that reminded Liliana of the blade of a knife.

“No… not Dante.” She admitted. There was no point in lying about it, or trying to be deceptive. She had never lied to him before, and she had never felt she had a reason to.

She was aware of how he felt about his cousin, knowing that he had pledged himself to work his best for him since they were children, even before he became Cappo and Nicola became his Underboss. But since that relationship was built on years of trust, she hadn’t thought it would be a problem to have one person in this large house that she could occasionally converse with. She hadn’t expected Nicola to let his possessiveness interfere with his bond with his family. 

It appeared she was wrong.

“Cara mia, my love, my sweetheart.” Nicola recited each pet name like poetry, his voice dropping lower and dripping with honey. “How do I show you how much I need you? How do I prove to you I love you most?”

Nicola thought he had done everything to make her happy. To tell her that she was special and loved. If she needed anything, he would give it to her. She wanted for nothing, he made sure of that. He poured affection on her day in and day out. He took care of her in ways no one else would be able to.

“You already do.” Lili raised her hand to gently touch his face. “Nicola, I know you love me. And I love you.”

Then why? Why did you test me?

Nicola wrapped his fingers around Liliana’s wrist, moving her away from his face and pinning her hand against the stucco stone.

“Nicola?”

He dipped in and covered her mouth with his, cutting her off before she could say anything else. He felt Lili open her mouth and he thrust his tongue inside it. He delved deep into her, his lips moving against hers, his tongue twining and wrestling with hers. He tried to pour all his love into the kiss, stretching it out and refusing to pull away even when she gave hints that she wanted a chance to breathe. She nodded slightly.

In reality, she knew she no longer had a choice in it. Nicola was going to love her completely whether she allowed it or not. He would love her fully, utterly, and devotedly. He would fill her life with him until there was no room for anyone else. And while she knew her love would never be as deep as his bottomless fount, and she would never know the full darkness of the shadows that loomed within him, she knew she had already drowned within his heart.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I like to write angsty stories, so a lot of the stories tend to have bittersweet/sad endings. But I think it's a tie between The Wicked Truth Among the Gentle Lies and The Unobtainable Glass Soul. The first one is SKK and... oof. Without giving too much away, the line between reality and desire is harsh. :') As for the second one, it is a FyoZai story, and it was written for Dead Dove Week, so the DD ending is... tough to swallow. Poor Dazai. The emotional pain killed my heart T_T

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Dreaming of You, Fated to be With You, in particular Chapter 5. It's a super sweet and cute AU in which Akutagawa is an archeologist/explorer and Atsushi is cursed as a tiger. The interaction between them is just down right adorable and hilarious sweet, especially since Atsushi can't communicate using regular words due to being a tiger. It's such a light-hearted, fun little AU.

Do you write crossovers?

Not yet. But I once thought about a crossover between Demon Slayers and BSD. It'd be fun to see the characters interact.

Yes! It wasn't a BSD story. It was for a story I wrote called A Punishing Gift. It was for an otome game, Piofiore, featuring the pairing, Yang / Lily. I'm still super honored and humbled that it was widely loved by the reader who did such great working translating it into a masterpiece.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! I've written with Lily (another Lily; she sadly isn't on tumblr) on plenty of stories. It's always such a blast bouncing around ideas and seeing the characters lose it because of such said ideas. (Always up for co-writing with my moots and anyone in the community! Co-writing is so much fun <3)

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

That's a tough one. A toss up between SKK and Fyozai. But also SSKK, Kunizai, and DazAtsu. Okay, I just love these pairings too much to choose only one T_T

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Uhhhh... all of them. The WIP list is endless. Although I'd love to continue the two stories I did for the SKK Summer Exchange 2024 - Seeing My in You and Living a Life of My Own. My brain already has scenes and ideas for the next chapters, but... the time ;w;

What are your writing strengths?

I've been told it's transitioning in between scenes and characters' introspective thoughts. I also have lots of fun writing villains and their characters, exploring their motives and learning that they're very human despite what the they do.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Writing way too much when it's not needed sometimes. I get really into the story and the character, then forget that it needs less words, more clarity lol!

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think it depends on the feel and intent of a given situation that is happening in the story. For myself, I don't do it too much, as I'm not sure I do it justice, writing dialogue in another language.

What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

For fandom, it's Demon Slayers, JJK, and Pandora Hearts. Without rambling too much, the worlds are so fascinating and the characters are equally fantastic. Would love to explore lots of ships for all three series. For a particular ship, I'd love to write Emily and JJ from Criminal Minds. Their dynamic is peak.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask if there's a way to download audio only from YouTube videos.

An awesome otome reader YouTuber, Spacey Sims, got hit with multiple copyright strikes on a video game she completed some time ago. VOLTAGE, I think? But the copyright strikes were on all of the videos all in one night.

I'm bad at summarizing so here is a screenshot of her community tab notification.

My point is, besides hoping against all hope that YouTube doesn't take away her channel, I want to download the videos, or at least the audio, so I can still finish the videos.

At least within the 30 days before an internet connection is required again.

Can I convert the videos or audio to mp4, etc onto a USB stick or flash drive?

Should I try contacting the Wayback machine to try to preserve them?

Is there a way to voice to YouTube not to take down her channel?

I’m flattered that you would ask me for dating sim recommendations since, to be perfectly transparent, I’m also pretty new to playing dating sims. I’ve only been playing dating sims for about 4 years now and the list of games I’ve played through is limited.

Still, you came to me so I’ll answer to the best of my abilities!

For reference, these are the games that I consider to be part of my current library (some are completed and some aren’t but they are ones that I actively play at this time):

In total, I’ve only really played 15 dating sims. (Also, none of these are titles available on mobile devices so anything I say in this post, I can’t guarantee also applies to mobile dating sims.) I also have a bit of knowledge about other dating sims from looking at discussion threads and researching the games to see if it was something I’d be interested in. I’ll just be using whatever information I do have about these games to answer.

If anyone just wants a straightforward recommendation list, just skip to the end, but if you want to read me explaining at length various aspects of dating sim difficulty, just keep reading from here.

So to me personally, there are three main factors that can contribute to a dating sim’s difficulty: gameplay mechanics, UI, and the story/writing of the games themselves.

Part 1: Difficulty from Gameplay

The easiest level of gameplay would be dating sims which are purely choice-based visual novels. You read for a while and then you’re given a choice and that choice will affect character affection or scene progression. Most of the dating sims I’ve played are pure choice-based ones. To name them all, they’d be: Code Realize, RadiTale, Cafe Enchante, Winter’s Wish, TaiAli, CinPhen, VariBarri, and Virche. It really is as simple as choosing what to say or do.

The next level of difficulty when it comes to gameplay in dating sims are games with some kind of interactive element other than choice-making. I’m not just talking about minigames but the general idea of interacting with the game that isn’t just making choices. Granted, in some cases, the interactive element is a minigame. In CxM, the minigame is pressing a button in time with a visual cue on screen. Nameless has a card matching game in a majority of the routes (it’s either 3 or 4/5 routes, I don’t remember exactly). I’ve also heard that the dating sim Jack Jeane has a rhythm minigame that comes up during each route.

Games like Piofiore and CupiPara have interactive elements that I wouldn’t consider minigames. Piofiore has a mechanic called Meanwhile Stories: at certain points during a route, the story will cut away to other characters and what they’re doing while the heroine isn’t around. Some Meanwhile Stories play automatically but others have to be selected by the player to be viewed. From my own experience, skipping out on seeing certain Meanwhile Stories will direct you to a bad ending in Piofiore (no joke, I was stuck on Orlok’s bad ending for so long before I realized I was forgetting to play the Meanwhile Stories). In CupiPara, the player is asked to answer a series of “Yes or No” questions to determine their Love Type; and depending on the Love Type result a player gets, that will determine the route ending one gets. Piofiore’s Meanwhile Stories and CupiPara’s Love Type test aren’t minigames but they are parts of the game that the player acts on and affects the story. And, well, some people might not want to deal with added elements.

The third level of difficulty for dating sims are the ones with stat raising elements. Of the games I’ve played, that would be Backstage Pass, Royal Alchemist, and Dandelion. You have to manage your beauty, stress, intelligence, etc on top of making choices to raise affection levels with a given love interest. Sometimes, you don’t even know how high you need a certain stat to be to pass a checkpoint. Those three titles in particular at least give players a few dozen save slots (as well as quick saves) so they can save scum and retry their stat grind. However, it can get tedious reloading a game over and over to get the optimal stat spread. So unless someone is comfortable/skilled with handling this kind of gameplay, I’d say a stat raiser is a harder type of dating sim.

The final and most difficult level of dating sim are games with much more intense/involved gameplay mechanics. I’ve never played games such as this myself. However, I’ve heard that games like Rune Factory and Boyfriend Dungeon have both dungeon crawling and dating sim gameplay as part of them. Action games aren’t inherently difficult but compared to purely choice-based sims, dating sims with more active gameplay could come across as harder.

Part 2: “Difficulty” from UI

I use quotation marks because I haven’t played dating sims more demanding than a stat raiser and so the difficulty I’m talking about is subjective. Really, I’m talking about certain UI/quality of life features in dating sims that make them easier to play/complete. Those exact features are a skip ability and a love catch system.

Dating sims are games that take a long time to play. They are visual novels and so have a lot of text to read. A player probably doesn’t want to re-read every single text box when replaying routes to see all endings. All dating sims have the ability to fast forward through text that’s already been read; there’s even the option to fast forward through unread text (you know, for the folks who don’t want to button mash through bad endings). However, more recent titles give players the ability to not just fast forward but jump ahead in a route to either the next instance of new text or the next choice that a player needs to make. It’s a nice feature to have for those who want to save time on completing all endings or don’t want to put up with a route they dislike. It also helps since a player doesn’t have to worry about accidentally disabling fast forward in the middle of it and pausing their progress for a second. Having to wait as you fast forward through a game isn’t the worst thing in the world, but sitting and waiting for choices to come up in the game can be a drag.

Still, if you’re the type that wants the convenience of a ��skip to next choice” feature, then CinPhen, TaiAli, CupiPara, Virche, VariBarri, RadiTale, and Winter’s Wish all have that feature.

The second UI feature I brought up is the love catch system. The term refers to a feature which gives players indications of when they make good choices and increase the affection level of whichever love interest they are pursuing. This can take the form of a status screen. Or the game might give players a visual or audio cue (sometimes there both) when they make a right choice to increase affection. Several of the games I’ve played actually do both, giving players cues when they make good choices and letting them check a status screen to see how much affection they’ve built. A love catch system is a valuable tool for decreasing game difficulty since it guides a player to the good ending the first time around. It’s also helpful for players who seek out bad endings first, for those with an “earn your happy ending” mindset (it’s my preferred playstyle). Not to worry for those who want to play blind and be surprised by what ending they get, the games that give the “good choice cues” allow players to turn off the cues (although the affection status screens still exist and one just has to ignore it to the best of their ability).

But then there are games that neither give a cue for good choices nor have a status screen to check in on. In that case, a player has to go in blind and just pray to the dating sim gods that they don’t accidentally get the ending they weren’t aiming for. The lack of a love catch system is especially frustrating in games with long common routes, the part of a game where the player is interacting with all the love interests and not playing the story of a specific character. Unless the choices are blatant like “talk to Character A” or “talk to Character B,” then it can be difficult to tell what choices will set a player on the character route they want to play. Then on a character route, the choices can still be vague and hard to tell which is good and which is bad. The only other choice is to play using a guide written by someone else to get one’s desired ending.

Games with no love catch system: Code Realize (and the fandiscs), Cafe Enchante, Nameless, TaiAli, CxM: Unlimited

Games with in-game cues but no status screen: CinPhen (and Evermore)

Games with no in-game cues but a status screen: Piofiore (in Fated Memories, it’s kinda difficult to understand; it’s easier to follow in 1926)

Games with both in-game cues and a status screen: Winter’s Wish, CxM (yeah, I don’t get it either; why have a love catch system in the original game but not the fandisc?), RadiTale (and Fanfare), Virche (and Epic Lycoris), VariBarri, Royal Alchemist, Backstage Pass, CupiPara, and Dandelion.

Again, as I said at the start of this section, the “difficulty” I talked about here is subjective and the features are more quality of life than actual gameplay complexity.

Part 3: Difficulty from the Writing

Just like Part 2, this aspect of a dating sim’s difficulty is subjective.

What I mean by a dating sim’s writing making the game difficult is that the content of the story might be too dark or heavy for some people.

Dating sims, like any genre of game, tell a wide range of stories. They can be goofy, dramatic, horrifying, and so on. Some stories are realistic while others are off-the-walls bonkers. If someone is looking for pure, unadulterated fluff and romance, that’s going to be hard to find. Just looking at my own experience with dating sims, the stories have a variety of tones and a wide range of topics that they cover.

I made a tier list to visualize what I feel the tone/intensity is for each game. Remember, this is my personal opinion regarding these games.

Fuck you and your happiness tier: Virche and Piofiore Gets heavy but it's not soul-crushing tier: CxM, Code Realize, Cafe Enchante Heavier topics have a presence tier: Royal Alchemist, Winter's Wish, TaiAli, Nameless More happy than sad tier: RadiTale, CupiPara, CinPhen, Dandelion Honestly not much to worry about tier: VariBarri, Backstage Pass

Let me also provide a general list of potential triggers and content warnings for each game. I’ll work my way up in intensity.

Backstage Pass: Depictions of anxiety. Sexuality, age gaps, and public perception are topics that come up depending on the route. At worst, there are strained family dynamics in a couple of routes.

Variable Barricade: Arranged marriage is a plot point. One particular routes includes attempted sexual assault and threatening suicide.

Dandelion: Mentions of terminal illness, depiction of emotional abuse, inferiority complexes, obsessive partners, and threats of violence.

Cinderella Phenomenon: Mentions of a past war, depiction of political corruption, murder, child abuse. It should be noted that one romantic interest is the heroine’s step-brother but they weren’t raised together and are hostile acquaintances at best before the game’s events.

Cupid Parasite: There’s kidnapping, romantic obsession, stalking, and attempted sexual assault. It’s also a bit more sexual than the other games I’ve played; nothing outright explicit but simply more sensual.

Radiant Tale: There’s fantasy violence and a lot of emotional baggage. Emotional trauma, terminal illness, political corruption, enslavement, and self-sacrificing mentality.

Nameless: Self-loathing, school bullying, physical abuse, attachment issues, emotional manipulation, and sexual assault.

Taisho x Alice: Topics include financial debt, arranged marriage, obsessive lovers, eating disorders, child abuse, mental health, suicidal ideation, kidnapping, and substance abuse.

Royal Alchemist: human trafficking, political corruption, assassination, human experimentation, brainwashing, concerns over war, and mass murder.

Winter’s Wish: Mild fantasy racism, kidnapping, violence against children, sex work, description of a corpse, attempted suicide, dubious consent, and terrorism.

Cafe Enchante: Age gap romances but are, for the most part, unrealistic (centuries old nonhuman characters). Depictions of self-sacrifice, unwanted bodily transformations, brainwashing, cannibalism, kidnapping, and mass murder.

Code Realize: genocide, chemical warfare, psychological conditioning, terrorism, emotional abuse, kidnapping, attempted murder, and attempted suicide.

Collar x Malice: The police, as an organization, play a large role in the plot but they are not wholly good and even get blamed for multiple tragic incidents. The game has terrorism, online bullying, alludes to bullying in a school setting, kidnapping, murder, stalking, and brainwashing.

Piofiore: The mafia in this game don’t play nice. There’s revenge, gun violence, murder, human trafficking, weapon trafficking, drug trafficking, religious indoctrination, abuse of faith, kidnapping, and sexual assault.

Virche Evermore: This game has a lot of dark content. This review includes a visual indicating all the potential triggers. Though I do believe it should be mentioned that Mathis’s route’s bad end does also heavily imply sexual coercion.

If you are sensitive to any of the heavier topics that I mentioned, I would have to advise against playing these games or to play those games with caution.

Subject matter can make a piece of media difficult to approach or enjoy. For a genre like dating sims, it’s largely marketed as romance games, but the stories the games tell aren’t always romantic but rather dramatic and emotional.

For easy to digest dating sims, I would suggest anything from the lowest two levels of my tier list. But for something darker or more plot heavy, the higher levels are there too.

Thank you, Anon, for sending in your ask. I’m sorry if my reply is longer or more confusing than you thought it would be. I just wanted to give my honest and thorough thoughts on the matter of dating sim recommendations.

Let me finish my post by giving my top five dating sim recommendations based on the factors I mentioned before and some other factors.

#5: Cupid Parasite. Despite my own lack of overall interest in the game, I can still point out what makes the game worthwhile. It’s got the quality of life features that more recent dating sims have. It’s got a fun blend of fantastical and modern elements. It makes interesting use of mythology in places. The cast is colorful in design and personality. The side characters actually get up to some interesting things too, depending on the route you play. Overall, it’s a comedy but it can still provide the soft, sweet moments of romance as well as more intense drama scenes. There is a fandisc but I’ve never touched it and even without it, Cupid Parasite on its own feels like a complete and fulfilling story.

#4: Code Realize. You don’t have to get all three games but at least the first, Guardian of Rebirth, is worth a recommendation. It is one of the heavier games but even with the sorrow and drama, there’s always a happy ending where the heroine and love interest are able to be other and work towards a brighter, happier future. This game doesn’t come with the nifty UI features that make ending hunting more convenient, but with how many charming little gems are in the story, I think replaying routes from the beginning is the way to go.

#3: Royal Alchemist. I’m not terribly fond of the stat raiser element, it was still a very charming game to play. Everything is drawn beautifully, it’s very easy to get into the flow of the game, and all the characters were pretty interesting. Not just the main character and love interests but also side characters helped build the world and made it feel genuinely lived in. The political intrigue plot in the game is ever-present but it doesn’t loom so heavily over the player that they can’t have fun. It’s an indie project and is $20 on Steam so cheaper fare than the dating sims from a studio like Otomate.

#2: Variable Barricade. Although one route touches on some heavier topics, it’s generally very light-hearted and goofy. The love interests are presented as problematic weirdos but they’ll hopefully grow on you as you play and you’ll see there’s more to love than a picture perfect image. The game has a good skip feature and easy to follow love catch system. What’s nice is that the one game is a complete package (other titles have fandiscs where, while not necessary to get a complete story, you might be compelled to buy a fandisc to get more content of the characters). Also, it’s one of the few dating sims out there with a voice heroine.

#1: Cinderella Phenomenon. This was the game to really get me hooked on dating sims. I will never not recommend this game to people. The art is cute and feels kinda timeless to me, the characters are charming and lovable in their own ways, and the routes are uniquely compelling (from the more interpersonal drama of Rod’s route to the trauma-fest that is Fritz’s route). I kinda rag on the step-brother route but the character himself is actually a good guy and I can’t hate him beyond the awkward position the game put him in. Evil gets defeated every time which is cool to see. The game’s heroine is one of a few who get to join in on the action, depending on which route you play. It’s a straight-forward choice-based dating sim with UI features that makes it easy to get the good endings and easily replay to see the bad endings. Also, it’s free to play on Steam and itch.io. And the fandisc Evermore is only $10. It’s pretty accessible price-wise for anyone who plays on PC.

If my post helps anyone in their search for dating sims, I’d be happy. But I’m also happy to just talk about this somewhat understated passion of mine.

Lovebrush Chronicles: Godheim Review

My very long, informal, and definitely biased review. This will contain minor spoilers for the Godheim arc only so take caution. This review is also only limited to the Godheim series so there will be no overall thoughts on the game itself. I followed Otome Kitten's format and I really hope it helps out any beginners to LBC.

ART:

I found the art very pretty and was extremely glad to see that they did not skip out on giving us CGs either! The sprites all looked good, but I personally have some issues with Lars' outfit (the orange did not look good on you sweetie 💀).

Not all CGs are drawn by the same artist however, which may be off putting for some. The total count number of proper CG's for each route (not including common route) boils down to around 4-5, so that also may be a pet peeve for some.

On another note, there are also mini CG's which appear as small boxes, whether you consider it as an actual CG is up to you. Personally, I enjoyed the roles they played towards aiding the narrative.

Unrelated note, I'm banging on the floor crying and wondering who the hell did Ayn's CGs (the one where he was cleaning his sword was my absolute favorite 😍) and why didn't they come back.

MUSIC:

If there's one aspect of the game that I shall praise to the ends of the earth, it's the music.

Colour me shocked when I listened to the intricate and deep soundtracks for the first time, they just took my breath away! There were many gorgeous orchestral scores that depicted the fantasy setting perfectly. Not to mention the battle ost's which had more effort put into them than necessary.

My personal favorite OST's would be the "River's End", and "Starry Sky", which plays the same tune as the OP song you hear when you log onto the game. It's honestly so iconic. 😭👌

COMMON ROUTE:

To my delight, the pacing was done very well. Nothing was dragged out and the introduction to the overall plot of the game was well established minus a certain plot point which definitely could have benefited better by being introduced in the common route itself.

I didn't really expect it to turn out as dark as it did however. The common route + modern prologue took me around a total estimation of more than 4 hours but in reality the prologue itself shouldn't take that long at all.

ROUTE ORDER:

Once you've completed the common route, you are given the option to start either Ayn's or Alkaid's route. After you've completed both, Lars' route is unlocked. And once you've finished all three routes, Clarence's route unlocks as the grand finale.

This was my personal playthrough and I wouldn't have changed it if given the chance. I believe it had the best flow of story progression. Though that was mainly because I wouldn't have enjoyed Alkaid's route as much if I'd played Ayn's first:

AYN ALWYN:

Ayn is Lars's cousin, but you soon find out that there is not a hint of familial love between them. He shows up as a mysterious figure during the common route and portrays a conflicting character, making the heroine unsure of his standing. While he appears blunt and crude, he is a determined young man who's sworn vengeance, and with an unexpected love for sweets.

Ayn's route in my opinion had the best consistent pacing as well as romance. I did find the romance somewhat abrupt early in the story, but the strong chemistry between him and the heroine more than made up for it! 🥰 It was just so enjoyable to watch them banter with one another and watching them just click.

I enjoyed the storyline for this route a lot and I think it had something to do with the fact that Ayn's route provided a different perspective in comparison to the others. In this route, we learn more about the the political situation surrounding Godheim and the royal family.

I also loved Ayn as a character, and not unexpectedly became my oshi ❤️.I do think a lot of people will enjoy him as a love interest. His route also has a wee bit of spice 👀, so for y'all thirsty gamers be sure to savor it slowly, as it's the only bit of spice we're getting here lmao. I did find some of his actions, mostly in the bad ends, to be OOC, but I easily brushed it off seeing as how much I liked him.

ALKAID MCGRATH:

- Member of the Noventrate

- Good, sweet boi

- Tea

Devoted and caring, Alkaid is the mage assigned to guard the heroine during her stay in Godheim. He's always expressing his concern for the heroine and will do anything to help her, even if it means betraying his mission.

Alkaid is the character who the heroine interacts the most during the common route. His romance with the heroine was sweet, even if it did feel way over the top in it's initial stages when I first played it. But once I got to learn more about him, I realized that he truly just wanted the best for the heroine, romantic feelings aside. 🥺

The route was fine. But I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the direction (?) it took on halfway. Some parts of it felt irrational to me and didn't really feel like it had any real relevance to its own story.

On another note, Alkaid is such a dreamy man. 😩 I adore just how respectful of a man he is in general (women respect juice, bottoms up!), and it was so sweet how attentive he was in making sure the heroine was always out of harm's way. I guess you could say he was someone akin to a hero in fairytales.

LARS RORSCHACH:

- Emperor of Godheim

- Good at combing hair 🥰

- That chest doe 👀

Known as the "Tyrant Emperor" from the heroine's manga, he immediately sweeps her off her feet, claiming her as his bride the moment she first arrived at Godheim. While his initial impression was flirty and playful, he lives up to his name as a cold-blooded tyrant. For some aspects at least.

His route focused more on the Silver Knight, which was the main (and wrong) reason why I enjoyed his route so much! 😆 On that note, I think that the writers had a bone to pick with Lars. They just had to force him to share the spotlight with an intriguing side character lmfao. The route itself was paced and executed well for the majority, but the quality of the writing towards the end was slightly skewered.

But to be honest, I quite enjoyed Lars a lot as a character, rather than a love interest. It was interesting to see the conditions surrounding his birth as a tyrant and his motivations for his questionable actions.

That's not to say that the romance wasn't enjoyable. I actually quite liked the relationship between him and the heroine. I found some moments they shared together really sweet. I also adored the development of Lars' feelings, and you can see just how important the heroine's existence was to him at the end of the route.

Though I guess I would have found the romance more believable if the heroine articulated her feelings for Lars more. I found it difficult to see the romance from her side. In short, the romance wasn't it's strongest point.

Clarence Clayden:

- Godheim's Archmage

- Get the tissues

- I've never been the same since...

Clarence has somewhat poised himself as an antagonist, only giving leeway in Lars' route. Distant and cold, he is stubborn in wanting to use the heroine for his goal and is willing to sacrifice anything to achieve it.

This route was an emotional rollercoaster. It broke me down, dumped my heart 6ft underground, trampled on its grave, and then some. It left me broken for a whole week for real goodness gracious...😭

This route can probably considered the "True Route", seeing as how it tackles the problem straight on unlike in other routes. The pacing slows down a little bit for a few chapters, but once it picked itself back up, it picked up HARD.

Now let's get to the romance. Out of all routes, some may say it had the least sugary romance, and a part of me agrees. But do igaf? No! ❤️Clarence turned out to be such a longingly sweet character and despite all the harm and pain he's done, I have no qualms in forgiving him and wanting to love him with all my heart🥺, as does the heroine.

I honestly don't want to say too much as it may ruin the experience. I went into this route completely blind and boy was I glad. All I can say that this route was the most popular out of all the routes for good reason. Got me playing up to 2 am with no regrets.😆😭

CAEL ANSELM:

- The Silver Knight

- The bias wrecker

- The sus

- He ruined me...

He is known in Godheim as the Silver Knight as well as the leader of the Rebellion. Decisive and apathetic, the heroine is unable to affect him emotionally in any form.🤡

Cael does not have an actual route, but a personal story, labeled as Expedition from his POV which may serve as an epilogue to the Godheim series. In his story, any unanswered questions are explained here, as well as the many actions he took that did not make it on screen.

If this wasn't a review I'd spend one whole section brainrotting about him so be grateful I'm trying to keep this short. 😅 Cael is a surprisingly interesting character by nature and it was very liberating to finally get a glimpse of his true feelings and thoughts throughout the heroine's journey in Godheim.

I'm scared to say more in case it may ruin any surprises. In my opinion, I enjoyed his story a LOT! It definitely made me feel depressed and empty in its own way and it hurts my heart to see that he never got a route of his own for reasons I won't get into right now. Absolutely amazing and one of my favorite parts of the Godheim series!

TRUE EPILOGUE:

Once you've finished all routes, the game will give you the option to choose one "True Ending", wherein you choose one of the boys to have a happily ever after with and by your own accord.

"One can only paint a world in which they believe in." 🥰

Please note that you can only choose one boy at a time. Your choice will then give you a Pictura based on which boy you choose.

To change your "True Ending", buy the Diadem from the shop to change your choice. You will not receive a different Pictura however.

I think the best thing about these endings were the music.😆 Each soundtrack was unique to each character and drop dead gorgeous to listen to. 😩

HEROINE (LITTLE PAINTER):

Despite China's strange attempts at creating self-insert heroines by leaving them nameless, the Little Painter was far from a blank slate! She's extremely relatable when it comes to her reactions and actions. Often times I would react a certain way to something an LI said or did, only for her to do the same thing! 🤣 I guess that could also count as a self-insert personality.

But if there's one thing I admire her greatly for, it would be her drive and determination to save Godheim. Her journey was far from easy and I doubt I could ever stay sane the way she did. Tbh, I didn't like the fact that her sufferings were never truly addressed properly, or rather, professionally ig?

I also found her quick adaptation and flexibility to her new environment extremely impressive. That goes the same to the way she wielded her powers for the first time. And how she grew stronger to go head to toe with even Clarence in his own route! You👏 Go👏Get👏 Em👏 Girl!

That said, she's not perfect. Some people found her to pushy and annoying though I personally found it okay. I was really glad how she didn't force herself to tolerate any crap and got that anger out rightfully.😆 (Asmoran deserved it...)

Final Thoughts:

I have enjoyed my journey immensely! The whole premise and setting drew me in, and I was surprised with the impressive narration which absolutely pummeled me to the ground (mostly on Clarence's route and no I'm not shutting up abt that).

The localization was also really superb? Yes it had a few typos + mistakes here and there, but they really pulled out all the stops when it came to making the dialogue natural and relatable. Not to mention a few large words that even I don't understand. 😂

It's not without it's imperfections of course. There are definitely some issues with the writing. And if you're looking for heavy romance or even fluff, Godheim is not the place to go to. 😅

Playing the Godheim arc took me about a week-ish, considering I had to level up and such. It may be a tedious process for some, but for me, it was an iron gate which I violently shook every day, screaming for the next chapter.

All in all, it's definitely worth playing! You don't lose much anyway considering it's free, so just give it a try. You can always drop it if you don't like it. My rating for this game is also very much biased and should not be taken seriously:

have you played Love and Deepspace and what is your review on it??

Hello! Yes I have. It's sitting in my homescreen right now on my phone.

I think my opinions on it might be quite mixed or controversial? So just bare that in mind before reading.

I've played a looot of otomes. I think I started playing them in 2009. I can very much say that LADS is a unique experience. It's not like anything I've ever played before in terms of graphics, cinematography and interaction with your fictional boyfriends.

The Great:

I think the interface and design is really nice in certain aspects (the combat is a bit iffy). This is a very pretty game imo. Also can I just say, having a customisable MC is really great! I like that you can change not just her skintone but her voice settings as well. I also just- LOVE the 4 and 5 star cards content. They hold some examples of lovely scenarios written with care, and some good ole fanservice to boot as a treat. Whoever does the lighting for the 5* cards does a marvellous job, as the animations really feel 'alive' sometimes. Great direction with using the MC as the POV so the 'camera' swings or moves closer according to how she's reacting. Love that.

The LIs:

I think having a varied cast is important in otomes but a common vibe or theme can often be shared between their contrasting personalities. For Piofiore its mafia/crime lords and domestic life, for Cafe Enchante cosy coffeeshop vibes. With Love and Deepspace I'd say its cosy vibes mixed with action, mixed with angst. The cast supports this, with all of them having serious or sweet sides. I am definitely not drawn to some of them, but that's okay! I think anyone going in new should know they won't like everyone and that's common for otome. What I find uninteresting might be wonderful to someone else and vice versa. I will say Sylus took the spot as my favourite and he has a very different vibe to the others even when he's doing cosy domestic stuff. I very much enjoy his scenes and how dynamic they feel (also its really nice the whole cast is in their twenties)

The Bad:

The worst casualty in Love and Deepspace is...the main story. I can't overstate how much of a confusing, poorly written and badly executed mess the main story is. In terms of setup, establishing lore, world building and stakes, it somewhat limps from one chapter to another. Scenes can begin and end abruptly with plot threads seemingly dropped. Secrets can often be intriguing, yes- but by continually withholding answers the game can get a bit frustrating. As a new player with no knowledge of the game, I didn't understand why Rafayel kept referring to himself as a fish during the crane game and kitty card mini games. It was like they were referencing something that hadn't happened yet in game, so I was like - okay, I'll wait. I'm sure it'll be explained (spoilers: it was not explained).

Essentially if you want backstory and context to the boys you NEED their cards to unlock their content, and I'm not a huge fan of that. I think the main story should still at least give you a bit more to work with about the boys. (This is especially bad when the lore is locked behind gacha luck). And I get that the whole story is space/time themed but sincerely I did not know the world of Love and Deepspace was capable of casual space travel until I read Sylus' anecdote story. This is not good worldbuilding. Sure it throws loads of terminology at you but you'll have to read the notes yourself to understand what they are. It's a lot of telling and not showing. For an example of how this could've been done: Cowboy Bebop is about bounty hunters in space. It has scenes of them...in space. You're telling me someone as rich as Sylus, who offers MC to go on his motorbike, yacht, and private jet, wouldn't offer her a circle around the planet in his spaceship? Idk it feels like a lot of worldbuilding details have been overlooked.

There is also the issue of voice acting. This can again come down to personal preference but in general I always give English Dubs a fair chance, and enjoy many of them. Voice acting has come a long way since the wooden performances of older animes and games. That said, many of the boys, especially in the earlier chapters and content sound extremely flat. This goes double for the NPCs (who can be laughably bad). It's not even a matter of 'oh this person is just reading lines with no emotion' no the inflections in their voice are off- the context of what they're supposed to be emoting to can feel a million miles off base. I barely felt like they were in the scene with me. That said - this was likely a voice direction issue, because more recent content allows the boys to sound more relaxed and involved in the scene. Sylus' English VA knocks it out of the park in his performance though and I really appreciate how much he embraced that role. A lot of people could get embarrassed having to voice ASMR type content but he got fully immersed so 10/10 for that. I haven't tried any other languages apart from Japanese but c'mon, we know the Japanese VAs are like celebrities over there and will crush any role so no notes there except they're all great.

TLDR:

With all that said I do not hate the game, I really enjoy it! (I wouldn't have ranted so much here if I didn't care) I just wish certain aspects were tightened up more for storytelling purposes. It feels a bit jarring when some aspects of the game are SUPER polished but then easy mistakes are made. So I'd say if you're interested in playing - to just embrace the fluff and spicy fanservice. Treat it as your main meal as I do. If you end up enjoying the main story and combat then that's a bonus! I really hope this game continues to be successful because their recent content and chapter has been super intriguing - and in general its just nice to have an otome reach the spot of 3rd highest grossing mobile game during some months (below the giants like Genshin and HSR)

They use bordelaise sauce with meat and fish alike. It’s made with red wine.

It’s a lot more simple than other places we’ve lived.

I don’t think they’ll be able to find us easily, but apparently he put some rather troublesome traps in place before he died.

All this moving from city to city is just an extra precaution.

my favourite game franchise is soul calibur!! i am sure it is a surprise to absolutely nobody who has ever met me that i looove raphael. i have loved soul calibur since i was about seven playing soul blade against my grandma on her playstation (she was a voldo main and i was usually playing sophitia or seong mi-na, if you’re curious dhfhuj).

i have also played a lot of overwatch in my time fhfhgh. i got into overwatch through reader-insert fic actually! i think the fan work and fan ideas for ovw are infinitely better than whatever is actually going on. i have also played a lot of dead or alive (i love a fighting game, as mentioned!). i was also a really big fan for a while of those rpgmaker pixel horrors (ib, mad father, the witch’s house etc!).

i like otome games too but i don’t exactly have a ‘favourite’ but i’ve really enjoyed nameless, dandelion wishes and amnesia! i should pick up my switch again bc i started playing piofiore about a year and a half ago and have still only done one playthrough fbfvgbjj
