Almost pt. 4
Bucky Barnes x femreader!
/ Steve Rogers x femreader!
Tumblr media
Angst, heartbreak, fluff
Warnings: bit of swearing
AN: helloooo next part is out! I’m excited to see where this series goes!!! Honestly I love Bucky and Steve so this is fun 😆
Enjoy 🤘🏼
The physical pain took a couple of weeks to heal. Steve was a steady nurse, changing out your bandages every few hours until the cuts seemed healed. Whatever the poison was, it had done deep damage to your body. It took you a week to regain the use of your muscles. Sam checked in now and again as Steve helped you recover. He was keeping recon on the Hydra base, watching for any new movements since your blunder with the trap, but since then there had been nothing new to report. They both agreed that the mission would be on standby until you were back to full health. Steve had nearly had you shipped out back to New York to recover, but a frantic panic of yours seemed to change his mind.
While you were confined to the safehouse, Steve hardly left your side. It was nice to be taken care of for a change. It was something you weren’t used to. Something you didn’t know how to process. He was patient and kind, even though you felt that you didn’t deserve it. You had fucked up. Big time. Nearly blew the mission with your recklessness and now it was being pushed back to accommodate you. While you would have been content to wallow in your pity, Steve would not allow it.
He pushed you to do your physical therapy everyday, cooked for you, helped you in and out of the shower in the most respectful way he possibly could. He made sure you took your medicine when you needed to. He was attentive to your every need.
When you were finally able to speak clear and full sentences again, one day while he was changing out your bandages you felt a sudden burst of emotion escape your lips.
“Why are you doing this?”
Steve ignored you for a moment, finishing off the last bandage on your left arm before he finally looked up at you with an unimpressed look.
“Because you’re injured and need help, now hold still while I-“
You snatched the bandages out of his hands with your other arm and glared at him defiantly.
“Why. Are. You. Doing. This?” You asked again, your voice becoming stern.
“Doing what exactly?” Steve asked, just as irritated, “Making sure you don’t die?”
“Why are you being so… nice to me? I’ve been on missions with you before, and whenever other people get injured-“
“Are you saying I don’t help my team?” Steve challenged.
You looked him square in the eyes and set your jaw tightly. “Not like this.”
There was a flicker of movement in Steve’s mouth. You knew you had hit a nerve there. While Steve was a great leader, the best probably this world would ever see, he never was this attentive to his injured teammates. When Barton had his side blown off during Ultron’s attack, he did not play bedside nurse for him until he was better. So why here? Why now?
He must have seen that you weren’t going to give up so easily. He sighed.
“I’m doing this because of Bucky.”
You felt your chest go cold.
“He told you to—“
“He hasn’t told me to do anything.” Steve interjected quickly, almost to save himself from saying the wrong thing, “He doesn’t even know what’s happened here, no one but Tony does. No, I’m doing this because of what you did for him.”
“Then why–”
“If you’d just keep quiet for a second, I will explain!” he said, oddly flustered. You had never seen Steve Rogers, fucking Captain America, get flustered. You sat back, crossing your arms and mimicking locking your mouth. He sighed again and drew on hand through his hair.
“Look, I’m not clueless, okay? I was there when Bucky and Nat broke up. I know what he went through after that… what he turned into once she walked out of his life. And I know you and Nat are friends, and I know you might take her side on the matter, but Bucky is my best friend, okay? So I saw what went on behind the scenes too from the other side.
“Neither of them were good for each other. What they had wasn’t healthy. It was toxic and strained and fueled by lust. When that fizzled out it was bound to fall apart.”
You were surprised by the information that Steve knew. Not that you thought that he was clueless, but you didn’t think that Bucky had shared that information with him. It made you feel a bit stupid. Of course he would tell his best friend. Maybe the idea of being the only one Bucky confided in had made you feel special, but now your ego deflated a bit.
“I tried to be there for him at first. Admittedly, I know very little about relationships and breakups. I didn’t know how to be there for him, and he wasn’t going to be truthful with his feelings because that’s just Bucky, stubborn as always. So it was easy for me to tell myself that he was okay, and let him handle things the way he needed to. He has been through so much already, who was I to tell him how to live his life?
“But then you started to show up more and more and he began to get better. I couldn’t explain how or why. I thought maybe that you two had been… together as his rebound, which I now know is not the case!” Steve said a bit sheepishly.
“I didn’t do anything,” You mumbled, “I just hung out with the two of you on the weekends.”
“Cut the shit. I know you stayed with him whenever I would tap out early. I know you would go babysit him whenever he got too drunk and in his feelings to distinguish what was real or fake. You were there for him when I wasn’t. You cared for him when he wouldn’t have the decency to care for himself, and you never belittled him for it. You cannot sit there and tell me that was nothing.”
You drew your mouth into a hard line. You remained silent, and Steve just sighed again and continued on.
“Just answer me this, and answer me honestly. Do you think Bucky is a broken man?”
You froze. That was something Bucky had said that night on the balcony. “She is broken, like me.” There were a lot of words that came to mind when you thought about Bucky, but broken was never one of them.
“No,” you whispered, “He is not broken. He is hurting, and he is stupid, and he is so irritably stubborn that it drives me insane… but he isn’t broken. He thinks that there is some part of him that is irredeemable. That he doesn’t deserve good things to happen to him in his life and it breaks my heart…”
You were crying again, but you didn’t care. Trying to hold back everything you felt for so long had taken all the strength you had. And now you were the weakest you had ever been. You looked to Steve, wondering if he saw you as a crying mumbling mess, but instead he pulled you in for a gentle hug. His large muscled arms comforted you in an embrace that seemed to warm you down to your bones.
“I’m sorry,” Steve whispered, “I see how much you love him, how much you care for him. I feared that he would push that love away, that he would hurt you during his time of pain. I wish I could make him see just how special you are.”
Steve’s words hit the tender nerves of your soul and you sobbed against his shoulder. He caressed your hair and held you tighter as you shuddered and cried against him. You felt ridiculous, crying like a helpless baby, but Steve just murmured comforting words and held you securely in place.
“It hurts… I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve lost myself in him… and he doesn’t want me. It’s stupid, it's so stupid… I feel so…empty. I shouldn’t have come on this mission. I’m so…sorry Steve. I’m sorry.”
Raw emotion cut through you as you were a blubbering mess. Steve just held you through it, not judging you or reprimanding you. He was calm, he was gentle, and he was patient. He kept telling you how good you were, how big your heart was. It was strange to be in this position. To be the one being reassured, to be the one being built back up. His words calmed your soul. You don’t remember falling asleep in his arms, but you woke up with him on the couch, his arms still wrapped around you as his head was tilted back on the couch.
You watched him a bit as he slept, not daring to move or stir him awake. You felt warm and safe in his arms. It was nice. He was beautiful, that you could not deny. His features were soft and gentle in his sleep. The rising and falling of his chest was even and steady. You slowly placed your head on his chest, listening to the even beating of his heart as you let yourself fall back asleep. For the first night since you had left New York, you did not dream of James Buchanan Barnes.
~
The next morning you were up, making sure to carefully untangle yourself from Steve’s embrace. He was still asleep when you started making breakfast. It wasn’t until the bacon started sizzling in the pan that you heard him grumble from the couch and pick his head up.
“Good morning,” you greeted, a soft smile on your face.
“Morning,” Steve said as he rubbed his face, “You look better.”
“I feel great, honestly.”
You fixed him a plate of bacon, eggs, toast, and a cup of coffee as he came to sit down at the small wooden table. He gave you an awkward smile as he took a sip of his coffee. You sat down next to him, a cup of coffee in front of you and a slice of toast. The medicine that you were on made you have a low appetite, but you didn’t mind making breakfast for Steve. You thought that it was the least you could do after everything he did for you.
The two of you chatted a bit while he ate his breakfast. He updated you on the situation with Hydra. Sam was able to infiltrate the base on his own, undetected, in the middle of the night. He stole their plans to ship out large quantities of the poison that had afflicted you. The shipment was planned to ship out to the states in a months time. Steve relayed this mission to Tony who suggested sending his own bots in to take care of it. Meaning you would be going home soon.
“Thank you for taking care of me, Steve,” you said softly as he finished his meal. He gave you a soft smile and just shrugged a bit.
You took up his plate and put them in the sink and tidied the kitchen as he went to take a shower. You packed your things, folding up your gear and clothes into your small pack. Steve had done your laundry for you while you had been indisposed. You smiled. It was such a small thing, but so many small things that Steve had done for you over the past few weeks had seemed to heal you in ways that you never thought you would heal from.
You felt a warm sensation in your chest.
You heard him come out of the bathroom. He was shirtless, with a towel draped around his neck as his blonde hair still dripped. “Showers open,” he said as he stepped into the room.
You faced him, gazing at him as you watched a few drops of water fall down his chest. You felt your face grow hot, and stumbled a bit as you tried to step past him. He caught you by the elbow and pulled you up, holding you a bit close to him as he chuckled.
“How many times am I going to have to catch you before we—“
You don’t know what came over you. What made you think that this was okay? All you know is that you leaned forward and kissed Steve gently on the mouth. His eyes widened in surprise, and the shock of it made you immediately pull back.
“I’m sorry— I shouldn’t have—“
But he had put his hand under your chin. His blue eyes searched yours a moment, in an incredibly soft and tender way. It made your stomach jump the way he looked at you now. As he leaned in again, slowly, allowing you to push away at any moment you wanted, you could smell the scent of his shampoo as his lips returned to yours.
He was soft and gentle. His hand wrapped around your waist, pulling you a bit closer to him. He broke off for a second, his eyelids were half closed as he searched your face.
“Tell me to stop,” he murmured, “If you don’t want… if this isn’t something you are comfortable with…”
You raised up on your toes to reach his level and kissed him again. You let your hands wrap around his neck and tangle into his wet hair. Steve let out a pleased sound, and his strong hands lifted you from your waist and held you closer to him.
You thought that this would feel wrong. That kissing Steve would ruin everything between you. You thought maybe he would be angry with you, for kissing him after confessing your love for Bucky just the night before. But here he was, kissing you, murmuring your name as he carried you over to the bed in the room.
Had he really done all he did this week for bucky's sake? Or was there something else? Some other reason why he had been so keen on taking care of you? Your mind tried to process these questions, but the feel of Steve’s mouth on your neck quickly shoved those thoughts away.
He broke apart long enough to lock eyes with you. He was over you on the bed, his eyes a bit wild as he looked at you. Your chests heaved together, his bare and shiny from the water.
“Are you sure?” Steve asked.
The only response you gave, was a gentle nod of your head as you let your hand gently scrape down his bare chest. He gave a shaky breath and shook his head.
“You will be the death of me, you know that?”
All other conversation fell away. All other feelings and thoughts and memories disappeared. There was only you and him. And for the first time in a while, you felt whole.

Almost-1
Tumblr media
Remus shivered as a gush of cold wind hit his poorly covered body. His hands trembled as he fished out the pack of cigarettes, letting out a frustrated sigh when he found out only one was left. It wasn’t much but it gave Remus an illusion of warmth in this harsh winter. It was like he had forgotten what warmth felt like. Yet it doesn’t excuse the wallet in his pocket that he picked from a man in a three-piece suit who was too much in a rush to even look up from his phone.
He shifted closer to the cold wall, facing towards the trashcan which seemed better than facing the bustling street of London. It was a farce really, when he knew no one would look his way and those who did made him feel worse. Their eyes were either filled with pity or disgust neither helping him the way he feels about his situation. However, how could he blame society when he was to blame for his condition? No one can blame these polished shops for not keeping him because it didn’t matter that he was overqualified. His condition made him unemployable.
Despite the strong winds, it was a miracle Remus was able to light this cigarette. Soon his stomach grumbled. He took out some pennies from the man’s wallet, it was enough to get him a loaf of bread. He begrudgingly left his somewhat warm spot, trying his best to avoid people. When he walked back with the loaf of bread he saw a thick envelope below the stack of the newspapers he kept to burn. He looked around trying to figure out who left this envelope. He picked it up and went into the alleyway away from the peering eyes of the people on the streets.
Once he made sure he was alone he opened the envelope to find a letter and a bundle of notes. He frantically took out the cash, counted it and scrutinized each note under the flickering street lamp. Someone had left him £2000. Under a normal circumstance, he would have just left the money and society would have patted his back for his morals. Unfortunately, Remus wouldn’t call himself moral now. He is filth to this society, no more the respectable professor who teaches young minds about the infinite opportunities they have that he doesn’t. He couldn’t even pursue his passion without missing from his work for days.
He looked around, his heart beating faster as he anticipated someone to attack him. But there he stood alone under the flickering street lamp, with the bundle of money in his hands. He scoffed at his state. Remus looked like a parody version of himself. So hungry for money that he didn’t even think twice before putting the money in his pocket. He hated these kinds of people yet here he was ready to do anything for this amount of money. He picked up the discarded letter. His throat dried up when he read his name in the letter. It was better when he thought this envelope was for someone else:
Mr. Lupin,
Hope you are doing well. I wish I could say that but seeing your state that would be a lie. You went from a respectable professor to a pickpocketer. While it is very easy to get someone like you in jail I want to make an offer. I want you to go to Wales and get me someone. Now I am aware this is a much more serious crime than you usually do but I have connections and not only you can get away with it you will receive the double amount of cash that you received right now. Now Mr. Lupin I want you to imagine. I want you to imagine the power I have that I can easily get you out of this crime you are about to commit. I am a simple person. If I want something I get it by all means. So if you are unable to get this person for me I can very easily get you convicted for crimes you didn’t even commit.
Choice is yours Mr. Lupin. If you choose to do this task for me kindly the letter in the envelope and leave it where you found it and you can go and get another loaf of bread…my treat. Although I warn you if you look back or try to “catch me” you will face consequences. If you don’t accept my offer kindly throw everything in the trashcan you call your home and patiently wait for your life to get worse.
Warm Regards,
Your Well Wisher.
Dread filled his chest when Remus read the final words. A shiver ran down his spine. He couldn’t help but feel eyes on him now even though he was standing in a desolate alleyway. He couldn’t even close his eyes the words of the letter flashed in front of his eyes reminding him of the situation he was in and that there was no escape he had.
Remus made the decision. He looked at the bundle of money in his hand in disgust laying back against the cold wall hoping to find some comfort but he had forgotten that feeling too. He slowly walked towards his spot putting the envelope under the stack of newspapers and walking with no destination in mind.

Jake x Reader (f)
Warnings: alcohol consumption, relationship problems
Find All Parts Here
It had been a long day. Jake and Josh had been working together on a new song all day. They’d almost had it finished, but it was missing something.
“Okay Jake, we need to step away. If we keep at this, it’s going to sound forced. This is a song about finding love for the first time. We need this to come naturally.” Josh says with a sigh and scratching the back of his head.
“I know. I know.” Jake replies, taking off his guitar and placing it on the stand.
“Go home, get some rest and we’ll try again tomorrow.” Josh suggested.
“Yeah, we’ll try again tomorrow.” Jake grumbles.
“Not gonna go home, are you?” Josh questions.
Jake side eyes him and shakes his head. “Nah, nothing worth going home to.”
Sighing, Josh tightens his lips. He hesitates before deciding to say, “If you’re that unhappy, don’t stay with her.”
Jake stiffens and the atmosphere grows cold. “I’m not going to leave her. We’ve been together for too long and it’s probably just a rough patch. Things will be fine. It's not like you've had a relationship last long enough to be giving advice.”
Josh frowns and shakes his head, letting the last part go, knowing Jake doesn't mean it. “We both know that this isn’t just some rough patch to get through. You’ve grown apart. You don’t lo–”
“Josh, stop. I really don’t want to hear it.” Jake interrupts.
“Okay. Alright. Whatever.” Josh says, throwing up his hands and taking a step back.
Jake looks over at his twin and heaves a heavy sigh. “I’m sorry. I just don’t want to even get into all of that.”
Josh’s eyes soften, and he walks over to Jake and gives him a pat on the back. “I understand. You know I’m here if you ever do want to talk about it.”
Jake nods his head and says, “I know.”
With that Jake says he’s going to go and leaves the studio. Getting in his car, he drives to the closest bar. Pulling into a parking spot, he gets out and heads inside. Walking straight up to the bar, he sits and waits for the bartender to get to him. He orders a whiskey neat. When they hand him his drink, he nods and says a small thanks.
Jake takes a drink of his whiskey, when something catches his eye. Glancing over, he notices you. He glances away before doing a double take. You were so mesmerizing. You’re hair cascading down your back, slightly swaying to and fro as you spoke. Your smile, sweet and hypnotizing. Your face was enchanting and one that would rival the most beautiful of gods. He could watch you for eternity.
You seem to sense someone looking at you and you glance to the side and over your shoulder. Jake is stunned out of his stupor and looks down at his hand holding the now empty glass. Turning away slightly, he looks at the bartender and raises his glass as a signal that he needs another. Clearing his throat, resting his arms on the bar and pushing away the empty glass, he glances over to his side. You’ve already dismissed your feeling of being watched and turned back to your friends.
As he waits for his drink, he gets a text.
“Where are you?” His partner asks.
“Out.” He replies.
“Obviously. Jake, when will you be home?” They text back.
He sighs and rubs his face with his free hand. He types back, “I don’t know. Why?”
“Because we need to talk.” They respond.
He knew all too well what that meant. Taking a deep breath, he answers, “Alright. I’ll head back after this drink.”
Jake locks his phone and slips it back into his pocket. The bartender walks over to Jake with a fresh drink. Giving them a slight smile as a thanks, he takes a swig. Sitting the glass on the bar, he twirls it in circles between his hands. He hears your laugh from across the room. It was a beautiful melody. He wants to look back over at you to see what made such a gorgeous creature laugh like that, but he doesn’t.
Sighing, he knocks back the rest of his drink. Lifting his finger, he gets the attention of the bartender and closes out his tab. Before getting up, he throws down a tip. Turning, he stands and heads for the door. As he walks to the door, he passes by your table. He takes one last glance at you. Just as he walks past, you make eye contact. The world slows, you stop breathing and your heartbeat thunders in your ears. Everything and everyone but him is a blur. Then he’s gone.
It takes you a moment to come back to reality. You’d never felt something like that before. Blinking rapidly and clearing your throat, you try to catch back up with the conversation.
“⏤ So I told him to do his own editing if he didn’t think it was that hard.” Your friend Shae said.
“Wait what?” You ask, confused.
“Did you really just not pay attention to a word I just said?” She wines.
“I’m so sorry Shae!” You say, reaching across the table and taking her hand. “I promise I’ll pay attention this time.”
As she repeats her story, and you listen. But as you sit and listen, you can’t help but think of the man that had made the rest of your world fade away. You wondered who he was. You wondered if all else seemed to fade away for him as well. You wondered if you took his breath away like he took yours. Taking a drink of your wine, you sigh and wonder if you’ll ever see him again.

I saw somebody say that watching the Percy Jackson show made them realize that in the first books Percy doesn't even say half the stuff he thinks and he's just a quiet kid silently judging everyone, like they're so right.
Think about it from Grover's perspective. You know Percy as a quiet boy who certainly has his judgy thoughts but (aside from telling them to you) keeps them to himself. He's just trying to make it through school, for his mom.
Then his mom dies. And he loses the ability to give absolutely any fucks. He starts saying all this shit he never said out loud and to people who could do infinitely worse things to him than anything Nancy Bobifit ever even tried. And it only gets worse as he gets older.
Like bro went from quiet kid in the back of the class to fist fighting a god in the span of like a week. Then he openly told the gods to pay their child support. Grover was having heart attacks every other minute.

Jake x Reader (f)
Warnings: alcohol consumption, cussing
Find All Parts Here
Jake stood hands on his hips, as he surveyed the living room. The empty bottles and trash were gone. Floors swept and mopped. Everything tidied and in its place. His eyes fall on the couch and he notices a rogue fast food wrapper. Walking over, he grabs it and tosses it in the trash bag he has sitting beside the couch. Taking one last look around, he nods his head in approval of his work. Bending over, he picks up the trash bag and carries it outside. Lifting the lid to his dumpster, he lifts the trash bag and puts it in. Jake closes the lid and turns to go back inside. Going back into the living room, he grabs the broom and the rest of his cleaning supplies and goes to put them up.
Just as he finished, he feels his phone go off in his pocket. Taking it out, he taps the screen. His face immediately brightens and a smile slowly spreads across his face.  It’s a text from you saying you were on your way over. The two of you had been texting constantly for over a month. The occasional phone call sprinkled in as well. You and Jake had also met up for lunch a few times, thoroughly enjoying being together each time. Now you were on your way over to his house to hang out and have dinner. Typing a quick response, he locks his phone and slides it back into his pocket. Turning, he walks to the kitchen to start prepping for dinner.
A few minutes later, he hears the doorbell go off. Sitting down the knife he was using to cube the potatoes, he washes his hands. Taking the towel from his shoulder and he drys them off as he walks to the front door. Looking through the peephole, he sees it’s you and grins. Reaching for the door knob and turning it, he opens the door. As he opens it, you look up from the ground and smile as his face comes into view.
“Hey, you made it!” Jake grins.
“Did you think I’d get lost on a ten minute drive?” You tease.
Jake laughs and says, “Nah, I’m more shocked you actually came. Come on in.”
He opens the door wider and you walk in. “I wouldn’t have agreed to coming if I didn’t actually want to.” You say with a smile.
Jake’s smile grows wider and his cheeks flush slightly. “Well, I’m glad you wanted to come.”
You smile at him and tuck your hair behind your ear. Taking a look around the entryway, you notice how warm and inviting his home is. Something you didn’t necessarily expect. The walls are filled with an eclectic mix of vintage music posters, black and white film pictures of people you assume he’s close with, pictures of places he’d been and the occasional discreet pirate themed piece. As you admire a particular picture of somewhere in Europe, Jake grins, crosses his arms and leans against the wall. He watches your face as you take in and study each new picture or poster. He watches your brows lift in admiration or pull together in concentration. You suddenly become aware of him watching you and you glance over to him. Catching him staring, you quickly look away as your face warms and heart races.
Jake pushes off the wall and straightens up. “Can I take your purse for you?” He asks, extending his hand. You slip the purse off your shoulder and grab your phone before handing him your purse. He turns and puts it on a hook on the wall. Turning and facing you again, he asks, “So, would you like to see the rest of the house?”
You shake your head yes and follow him as he walks around you and into the next room. He sweeps his arm across the room and tells you this is the living room and motions for you to follow. You glance around the living room as you follow, taking note of the bookshelves filled to the brim lining one wall, the dark green velvet couch with a matching wingback chair sitting catty cornered from it and the small dining table tucked into the corner. Smiling, you turn to look forward and see the kitchen. The counter was already filled with the food Jake was preparing. Jake pulls out a stool and gestures for you to sit. You grin and take a seat as Jake walks around the counter and picks up the knife to continue where he’d left off.
You sit your elbows on the counter and rest your head in your hands as you watch him chop potatoes. “Whatcha makin’?”
“I’m making Japanese curry. Fuck– I didn’t even think to ask, do you like Japanese curry?” He asks, brows furrowed.
You chuckle and nod your head saying, “Love it!”
Jake breathes a sigh of relief and continues prepping the vegetables. “Good, good. So, read anything interesting lately?”
You take a deep breath and sit up straight. “Well, I did start reading a new book series, but I doubt it would be your thing.”
“Tell me about it.” Jake says as he turns to dump the vegetables in the pot.
“Okay.” You say with a grin. “It’s a fantasy series written by a French author. It’s called, ‘The Mirror Visitor series.’ It’s about a girl who is an archivist and...”
You continue to tell him all about it as he cooks. He nods and asks questions periodically. As he lifts the lid of the rice cooker, he comments, “Sounds pretty neat, I think I’d like to check it out.”
Your face lights up. “You can borrow my copy if you’d like.” You offer.
Jake glances over his shoulder as he dishes out the rice and curry, and grins. “I’d like that. Thanks.”
You smile back and say, “You’re welcome! That smells amazing by the way.”
Jake chuckles and turns with two bowls in his hands. “Well, I hope it tastes good. Here, follow me.” He says motioning with his head.
You get up from your seat and follow him through the living room and over to the dining table. Jake sits your bowl down on the table and pulls out your chair. After helping you scoot your chair closer to the table, he sits his bowl down on the opposite side. Turning to you, he asks what you’d like to drink, offering you various refreshments. You decide on just a glass of water and he turns to go back to the kitchen. As he’s in the kitchen, you get out your phone and take a quick picture of your dinner. Smiling to yourself, you look to see if the picture turned out before locking your phone and sitting it to the side. Jake walks out of the kitchen and back over to the table holding a glass of water, a bottle of beer and two spoons.
Placing your glass of water in front of you and you spoon beside your bowl, he walks around the table and takes a seat. He sits his beer and spoon down before clearing his throat. Taking his hair, he pushes it out of face and throws it in a low half bun.
Scooting his chair closer, he rests his arms on the table and looks at you. He lifts his hand and motions toward your food. “Well, dig in. Hope you like it.”
You smile and pick up your spoon. Taking a bite, you inhale sharply. Jake jerks his head up with a worried expression. “Are you okay? Do you want something else? If you don’t like it, you won’t hurt my feelings. Here, let me take that and make you something else.” He says as he stands and reaches for your bowl.
You shake your head and wrap your arms around your food. “Absolutely not! Jake, this is amazing!”
Jake pulls his hand back and laughs. “Jesus! I thought you hated it. I’m glad you like it.”
Shaking your head, you take another bite. Covering your mouth, you correct him, “Love it.”
Jake chuckles as he sits down again. “Well I’m glad you love it.”
You spend the rest of the meal eating and talking. Jake tells you about a book he’d read and you listen intently as he speaks. You could listen to him talk forever and never tire of his voice. When both your bowls were empty, Jake stands and grabs all the dirty dishes and goes to put them in the kitchen. While he’s in the kitchen, you stand and push your chair in before walking over to his book shelves.
Hands clasped behind your back, you browse the titles. Under the Black Flag, Bound For Glory, Life, and more were scattered amongst the shelves. Seeing a title that piques your interest, you take it off the shelf and flip through the pages.
Jake comes out of the kitchen and sees you standing with your back to him by the shelves and flipping through one of his books. He takes in the image before him. You look at home amongst the books. Your hair flowing down your back. The sleeves of your slightly oversized sweater pushed up. Your sweater tucked into your corduroy skirt. Your delicate gold necklace dangling before you absentmindedly reach up to slide the charm along the chain as you read an interesting page.
He smiles slightly as he walks over to you. Without even thinking about it, he wraps his arms around your waist and rests his chin on your shoulder. You immediately tense up and freeze. Your face heats up and your heart beats loud and fast in your ears. But, it doesn’t take long for you to begin to relax into him. He feels your body relax and he smiles to himself. He wraps his arms tighter around you.
“How did you know that’s my favorite book?” He asks.
“Lucky guess.” You chuckle. Closing the book, you bring it close to your chest. “Could I borrow it?”
Jake smiles and loosens his arms and turns you to face him. “Of course.”
You gaze into his eyes and smile. “Thank you.”
Jake looks at you and smirks. “No problem.” He says before stepping closer and slides his hands onto your hips. “Is this okay?”
Your breath catches in your throat and all you can do is nod in reassurance. Jake’s eyes fall on your lips and his mouth falls open slightly. Closing it quickly, he blinks before swallowing thickly.
Looking down, he sees the book still clutched tightly to your chest. He reaches up and grabs it. He looks back up at your face and slowly takes it out of your hands. Putting it down on the shelf behind you, he brings his hand back around and places it on the side of your neck. His thumb strokes your cheek and his eyes search yours, making sure he’s not moving too fast and that this is still okay.
You take a shallow breath and lean forward. Placing your hands on his chest, you lean in to kiss him. But you hesitate, maybe he doesn’t actually want this. Jake sees you hesitate and worry cross your beautiful face. Wanting to take the worry away, he leans in. His lips meet yours, kissing you softly and slowly.
It's as if time stops and the two of you move slowly. Jake's other hand leaves your hip and cups the other side of your face. Your hands clench his shirt as he deepens the kiss. This kiss leaves you breathless and wanting more.
He breaks the kiss and pulls away slightly, resting his forehead against yours and breathing heavily. Letting go of your face, he brings his hands down to your hips. Clenching his jaw, he clears his throat. His fingers grip your hips and he gently pushes you against the bookcase.
His voice husky and breath shaky, he whispers, “I want to kiss you again.”
You pull him close until your lips are millimeters apart and say, “Then kiss me and don’t stop this time.”
