like Allison meets Scott for the first time one on one emotionally connects over an injured dog at the vet Scott shows her how to pet it (to TRUST) Allison’s like I can’t believe I’m crying rn after this emotionally traumatizing event (get my girl out of the 2010s not like the other girls box PLEASE) Scott’s like no dw I would cry too (he said toxic masculinity who I’m rizzing up a girl rn everyone say thank you Scott McCall) and then in s2 Isaac comes to the vet to talk to Scott (dare I say first time they directly emotionally connect dare I say first one on one intentional for a reason moment) and they’re talking over/about an injured dog and Isaac gets shown how to pet it and to help it and he starts crying a little Scott says I cried too (RIZZ⁉️ hello this was crazy wdym you have one way to flirt) and he says because I trust you. can anyone hear me

“High Lady.” He bowed his head a little. “This appeared today, it’s for you.” He approached the table and left the letter on top of the papers that were scattered around.

“Thank you, Yur.” She said and the male just nodded, leaving her office. She reached for the letter, no name on it, but she opened the envelope, grabbing the paper inside.

“Dear Y/N!

It’s been a while since we saw each other, things have been great ever since our last encounter. Nyx is growing up so fast, it makes my heart ache with the change.

Nesta and Cassian are happily enjoying their mated life, training the priestesses and whoever wants to join them in combat.

Elain is out in Spring Court with Lucien, the two of them are doing a great job in rebuilding Spring alongside Tamlin, and slowly learning about their bond. Elain told me she plans to accept it soon.

We’ve been happy, and we miss you dearly, but I’m afraid things aren’t as good as we thought, as things with the Mortal Queens are still tense and a new threat looms in the dark.

Rhys doesn’t want to disturb, he says that you and Az need your peace, but I know he is distressed, that he hasn’t been sleeping, fearing that we’re forced to go to battle again.

The words made her heart twist on her chest, what could it be now? She clenched her fists, the thought of another thing to disturb their well deserved peace made her blood boil.

She got up, going after her mate, the letter clutched in hands. She found him by the sparring ring, Eris was there, she had no idea they were even coming today. Eva quickly wrapped her from behind.

“I missed you baby.” She says and Y/N smiles at her.

“We missed you too.” She replies, still feeling tense. Azriel immediately turns to her, blocking Eris and striding towards his wife.

“Something wrong?” He asks, feeling her distress through the bond. His hand rested on her belly.

“They need us.” She said, letter in hand. Azriel quickly reads through it.

“I’m sorry but we can’t go.” He replies.

“Of course we can, I still can handle myself Az.” He rolled his eyes.

“You’re four months pregnant, woman.” He pointed and Y/N shrugged.

“I still beat your ass any time.” She argues. “I’m not dying Azriel, I can fight just as well as I could.” Azriel held his mate closer.

“Please, reconsider.” He pouted and she pinched his cheek.

“No! Now we need to get ready, all of us.” She looked around, Eva and Eris nodded but Azriel still didn’t want her risking her life.

“There’s nothing I can say to make you give up?” He begged.

“I never ran away from danger, and I certainly don’t plan to do it now.” She rubbed her belly.

“Okay, but if I feel like you’re in danger, no matter how small, I’m protecting you, and only you, you’re my priority.” He warned.

“Such a Mother Hen.” She joked, pulling her mate in for a kiss. “We will be safe Az, with you, we’re always safe.” She reassured him.

“I can’t say no to my mate.” He finally gave in. “I bet they will be quite shocked about you.” He pointed to the round belly forming.

“Let’s just say that I love to do a big entrance.”

WIP Wednesday: Custos Custodium

This week, the Neuromancer influences get dialed up (briefly) as Jensen visits the Red Light district. Then it gets kind of Warhammer 40K: I had to resist having Allison say, "From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me," and so forth. Attain the strength and certainty of steel for yourself here.

The holographic crimson strippers lining the cobbled streets made for a lurid welcoming committee to the Red Light District. They gyrated obscenely in mid-air, some dancing without props, some working an insubstantial pole, beckoning and blowing kisses as their sensors picked up passers-by. Jensen sniffed. Tourist stuff, and to someone who’d seen the holo setup underneath Picus’ Montreal headquarters, little better than a low-res Playboy pinup downloaded one pixel at a time over shrieking nineties dial-up.

The Red Queen dominated the District’s central plaza, its décor a panoply of playing cards. Real women and men twirled and beckoned in the second-floor windows. One twitched her curtains closed as he watched, a moment after he saw the door behind her emit a sliver of light. He bypassed it and made a beeline for the comparatively tame signage of the Irish Stool.

Inside, it was blessedly quiet, the thumping bass of the clubs muted by thick glass windows. The patrons here knew what they liked, and what they liked was a beer and a bit of elbow room. Authentic indeed. He’d have to come by some time when he wasn’t working a case. Idly, he wondered whether they shipped in a morose fiddler, too, to complete the ambiance, then spotted a stool and a mic stand in the corner. He must have missed live music night. And maybe Stanek, too—no sign of him on the ground floor. He headed downstairs.

The cavernous basement area was even quieter. Jensen looked around and spotted Stanek at once, nursing a pint at a two-top. Montañez slouched at the table nearest the stairs, ass hooked on the edge of a seat, and Riley sketched a salute from the bar itself. Jensen nodded to him and bumped elbows with Montañez as he strolled past. Riley was pretending to drink something red. Jensen appropriated it ruthlessly and plopped down at Stanek’s table.

The watchmaker’s face brightened as he sat, then closed, then grew curious. “Na někoho čekám,” he said. “I’m expecting someone… Wait a minute. I know you. You’ve been in my shop. What’s going on?”

“You have some things to answer for, Mister Stanek. We have evidence linking you and your shop to the train station bombing.”

“Bombing…? No! I would never—I wouldn’t even know where to start! You have the wrong man. And I don’t have a staff. It’s only a small shop, you know that, don’t you, Mister… Jensen, right?”

“Yes, that’s right. Think, Mister Stanek. Is there anyone else who would have access to your shop? Or your tools, or components?”

Stanek shook his head slowly. “No… no, there is only me and my—” He cut himself off abruptly.

“Your daughter?”

“No! No, not—” Creeping horror gave way to determination on his square face, his eyebrows meeting over his nose and his jaw setting. “Look, take me in. I am the one you are looking for. I—I have made bombs for them.”

“Uh-huh.”

“They tricked me!” Stanek improvised, transparently. “They had me make the timers, but they never told me what they were for!”

“I don’t think so. Protecting your daughter is admirable, Mister Stanek. But you’re not doing her any good by taking the blame. You need to tell me what you know. That’s the only way to help her.”

Stanek held out for another moment, then sighed heavily and took a drink. “You are right, I know. Allison was in the military. She always wanted to belong, to be part of something greater than herself. She was such a beautiful child. Gifted.” He paused in reminiscence.

“What happened?” Jensen prompted.

“After the Incident, she met… some people. They said they were her friends, but I could see they only wanted to use her. Parasites!” he snarled abruptly. “And now—now they have taken her. You must help! She is not to blame for this. She has been coerced!”

“Calm down. I hear you. What do you mean, they’ve taken her?”

“I invited her here tonight, to try to make her see reason. But one of them came by instead, spewing curses about ‘Fleshers’ and ‘Naturals.’ He—he gave me a message from her. She was saying goodbye,” he said, in a very small voice. Then he shook himself. “But she would never leave me all alone! They used her, and now they intend to make her disappear!”

“Who are they, these people?”

“Eh, I don’t know, other than they were Augmented. Not like you, though—zealots. Fire in their eyes. They kept talking about ‘the Ascension,’ whatever that is.”

Definitely Machine Cultists. They had a church in Překážka. He could start there. “Does Allison have the expertise to do something like this?”

Stanek hung his head. “Much more than I do. In the military, she was with Pyrotechnici, eh, bomb… people.”

“Bomb squad? Explosive Ordnance Disposal?”

“Yes, yes. She was happy there. They rebuilt her, after the accident. Rebuilt her to make her better at what she did. But when the Incident happened, she was sent away, dismissed without honor. She was lost.”

“And these friends found her.”

“Bah! They exploited her, and now they plan to discard her.”

Jensen drained his glass and stood, signaling the other agents. “Thank you, Mister Stanek. I’m afraid I have bad news. Your apartment was trapped by the Dvali. Did you owe them protection money?”

“Who, Radich? Mister Nikoladze? No, no—I make him watches, for a discount. After what happened to Allison, Radich knew I needed money. And I think he liked to have the exclusive arrangement. He likes to control things, people. But if someone made him a better offer… Friendship means nothing to a thug.”

“I see. Well, you’ll have to go with these agents for now. For your own protection, and they’ll have some more questions for you.” Montañez and Riley sidled up.

Stanek looked around wildly. “No! I have to go—I have to help her! She’s all I have!” The agents put their hands on his shoulders, though, and he wilted. As they led him away up the stairs, he implored Jensen in a fierce and desperate undertone, “Find my daughter, or I will!”

Jensen paid Stanek’s tab. He figured it was the least he could do.

on fire: a teen wolf novel chapters 10-13 chapters 7-9 here chapters 4-6 here chapters 1-3 here

after a little break i am back with a new installment i'm doing 4 chapters today because this book only has 19 chapters.

once again: kate argent is her own warning.. there's an entire flashback chapter of her and derek when he was a teenager. she explicitly grooms him.

Our intrepid heroes are still in the goddamn woods. We shall never leave. Allison is cold and so Scott snuggles with her to share body heat. Classic trope but I have read many missing persons cases. Hypothermia can happen even when you don’t think it can. 

And we have yet another example of Derek being characterized as kind of a dick. He and Stiles find a campfire as Derek tries to track the scent of the Alpha and/or locate Scott. Stiles is just having a bad time as he’s winded from trying to keep up with Derek. Derek leaves him there. I reject this. No. Derek never left Stiles anywhere like this. Especially not with danger afoot. It very much stands in contrast to Wolf’s Bane when Derek crawls over broken glass and fights Peter, distracting him from Stiles.

The Queen has finally arrived. We finally get some Lydia narration. She also comes with Danny and some random dude Damon. 

It had been kind of annoying Danny hasn’t been involved that much considering he is Jackson’s best friend.

Have I mentioned that I don’t particularly care for how Danny is handled in this book? First you have Stiles assuming they should send Danny to the pay-by-the-hour motel because he’s gay and now Lydia’s narration is stereotyping the poor guy. “Dark-haired, with that cool Hawaiian vibe he had.” Danny was right to leave y'all.

Danny says he doesn’t have Lydia’s phone number which I sincerely doubt. 

I want to throw hands with this line “He gave her a completely non-sexual once over.” It’s giving gay-best friend trope vibes which to be fair was at its height in the 2010s and let’s face it this is how Lydia was often written pre-character development (and even after). Especially in the Sterek fandom. Don’t y’all try to tell me otherwise. I was there, Gandalf. 

There is this little section of Lydia’s I think deserves some commentary. The way this book has a subplot for Allison and Scott revolving around how they want to sleep together and the way Jackson and Lydia think of their relationship, especially their sexual relationship is interesting. Now, I’m no pearl clutching Puritan on this subject but the way that sex is handled in this narrative strikes me as too adult for their age. But this passage makes me change my perspective a little. These are kids acting too adult because they feel pressured in other areas of their lives to be adults without the experience and emotional capacity to do so. That fits in with Teen Wolf’s narrative. 

“Are you going through his stuff?” Danny queried, and she have him her best patronizing look, “Please,” She said, “You must know that I have a drawer here.” Damon looked even more impressed. Very few teenagers could claim the very adult perk of having a drawer containing their belongings at their boy -- or girlfriend’s house. Not that many teenagers had the need. It spoke of changing clothes, spending the night. Adult stuff.  Sex.”

Jackson’s computer wallpaper is Lydia which is sweet but then she says she picked it out herself which is less sweet. 

Jackson’s computer password is fucking Captain. You deserve to be hacked, Jackson.

Now Lydia brought Danny and his hanger on Damon from her house to Jackson’s because they’re looking for a CD Jackson apparently burned for Damon to use to DJ for a party. The 2010s of it all came out and kneed me in the solar plexus. Even Lydia was wondering why Jackson didn’t just make a shared playlist. But she searches through Jackson’s stuff stalling a little so she can snoop. This is all important because we finally get to the actual plot of why Jackson was lured away and missing in the first place. People want to rob the Whittermore’s while they’re out of town. Jackson at this point is still being held at gunpoint over in the preserve. 

The would be robbers -- henceforth referred to as Thing One and Thing Two -- assault Lydia and threaten her demanding to know if there are other people in the house. Lydia truly gets a raw deal no matter what.

Meanwhile, Derek’s left Stiles and is trying to follow the scene of the Alpha. He uses the word “shedding” to refer to how he left Stiles. I cannot impress enough how he would not fucking say that.

Derek’s out of luck though because the scent he comes across is old. He is at the place he found Laura’s body where he has a Moment of Anger before he moves on he picks up on Jackson’s scent. He recalls how he dug his claws into Jackson back in Magic Bullet and feels a tiny bit bad. He finds a half burned article about Jackson and does what I deem a Derek thing to do and that’s pocket it because he’s “keeping tabs on Jackson”. It’s stalking, Derek.

Narration switches back to Stiles and of course he gets weird quickly and Stiles what the fuck? Stiles doing something like this during the later seasons wouldn’t be out of the norm. He’s paranoid, hyper vigilant and suspicious at that point but here? Season 1? Stalker.

“He had tried calling Scott a couple more times, then Allison, then Lydia. He’d had her phone in his possession when he deleted the picture she’d accidentally taken of the Alpha. Of course he’d also inputted her number into his own phone; how stalkerish was that?”

Derek reappears and scares Stiles. Stiles observes “He was kind of sweaty, and he looked glummer than usual.” Stiles refuses to be normal about Derek. 

They have a little tiff except it’s them being worried about the same thing but in opposite directions. 

“Stiles crossed his arms and hunched over, shivering and trying to make himself inconspicuous, in cast the Alpha spotted Derek and decided to attack him. But Derek was a Beta werewolf too, like Scott. Why wasn’t he part of the Alpha’s pack? Maybe he is. Maybe he just hasn’t told us, he thought. “Or maybe it’s some kind of trap,” Derek said, “Something the Argents cooked up.” “You mean that Allison’s in on it?” Stiles asked, sounding incredulous.  Derek slid a glance at him. “Why do you sound so surprised? You know what the Argents are. What they do.``

And so we have arrived. The part of this book I remember the most. The Derek Hale Flashbacks. We go six years into the past. 

This is definitely where the idea of Kate Argent working at Beacon Hills High comes from and it makes a lot of sense. It even works even better given the context of season 2 where the Argents actually infiltrate the school as a tactic. 

Holder puts Derek on the swim team which is funny in retrospect because of how the swim team is important to the story of season 2 but Derek is established in season 3 as having been on the basketball team like Peter.

Holder also does a little world building on werewolf customs and pack dynamics here which the show lacks in detail. The way Holder does it is far more patriarchal than what the Hales actually are in the show. There’s a focus on Derek’s father (unnamed even here), the contest/rivalry between him and his cousin Josh, entrance into manhood and Uncle Peter. 

I am still deeply amused by Holder making the Beast of Gevaudan an ancestor of the Hales when the show took the route of making it far more deeply connected to the Argents.

The deepest of sighs at this : “Unlike Laura, who was popular, he didn’t have any human friends, and he didn’t want any.” I just have the hardest time with isolationist, anti-human Derek. Season 3 Derek called and told Book Derek to fuck himself. Derek had a posse of generic human friends.

Kate preys on Derek while she fills in for the main coach as he’s on paternity leave. Also Kate’s up here just brassily using her actual name.

Like Derek’s about 16 here so I can easily buy him noticing a pretty young woman in close proximity to him but Holder does a good job in making it clear that while Derek’s attracted to Kate superficially her interest in him makes him uncomfortable. Derek’s narration says things like “Flustered, even a little frightened.” and “He practically ran out of the school, looking over his shoulder.”

Holder then parallels Scott and Allison once more which is a, um, choice by describing Kate’s hair in the moonlight and Derek almost wolfing out. 

Apparently Laura and Derek shared a Subaru Forester. Which Hale lesbian bought this?

Now up until this point I’ve mostly avoided talking about Laura and her presence in this book because I was saving it for this scene. Laura Hale is a ghost in the narrative in the show. She’s seen maybe three different times outside of being a corpse. She’s never actually named in any of those short appearances and no one talks about her. Here she’s mentioned several times by Scott, Stiles and Derek. Plus now she’s shown in Derek’s flashbacks. I don’t like her all that much here and I think this might be where some of Laura’s fanon characterization comes from. 

Anyway, Derek and Laura are at a diner together eating hamburgers. Derek drinks Diet Coke. Look, I don’t see him as a Diet Coke drinker but that’s not the point here. Derek mentions Kate and how he thinks she’s so beautiful. Laura has this moment where she seems concerned:

“Is this...woman a student?” Laura asked. “No. She’s the new lifeguard. Ms. Argent.” Mr. Braswell’s replacement.” “School lifeguard?” she said, looking mildly shocked. “A teacher?”

After this though Laura’s characterization takes a nosedive. She refers to Kate as a slut when at this point in time Kate hasn’t really done anything necessarily wrong. Derek only really tells Laura of thinking she’s pretty. Laura’s never even met her.

She goes on to tease Derek about his crush -- the word mateable is used 🤮 -- and Derek shuts down. “Suddenly, he didn’t feel like talking to her about it anymore.”

I hate it here.

The next scene is another flashback I recall vividly. Melissa and baby Scott being abused by Mr. McCall. This fuckface trying to convince Scott that his asthma attack isn’t real and it’s all in his head. I want this man to die. Interesting that later when Rafael McCall is introduced he’s still The Worst.

Catch these hands. “Scott didn’t want him to yell at his mom because Scott had asthma. It wasn’t her fault. It was his, Scott’s.” 

If Melissa McCall had killed him no would have charged her. 

Back in the present we return to Scott and Allison. They’re still cuddling but realize they’re supposed to be looking for Allison’s keys. Her phone rings and they have a mishap which sends Allison down the incline. She takes him with her.

They recover but Allison has now lost her keys and phone. Bad day all around for Ally A.

Scott finds Allison’s phone using his wolf powers but he can’t let her know that so they use his phone to call hers. 

Her ringtone for him is apparently a band called Kids of 88. I had never heard of them so after a quick search their biggest hit was in 2009 My House. Which again -- sex.

Scott went to get her phone but he’s prevented by an invisible barrier. Wolfsbane. He makes up a lie about his leg being hurt because like how else do you explain not being able to touch a bush?

They sit down and Scott’s having thoughts like “Oh I wish Derek were here” so you know it’s not great. Allison talks a little about how she’s close to her parents.

They are fucking kissing again. Stop it. It’s not the time. 

Scott decides to text Stiles and says Stiles knows his username and password. We all know. It’s the ever iconic Allison. Jackson and Scott truly deserve each other.

I forgot Jackson was still being held at gunpoint while all this has been going on.

Jackson makes an attempt to escape but yet another guy is waiting at the Porsche. How many people are there? Two here, Cassie probably and then the two at the house. So 5 people in total it appears. Geez. 

His escape fails and he’s taken hostage. Jackson never has a good time. 

All of Chapter 13 is Kate and Derek. Shall we brace ourselves?

“One by one the other swimmers left, and he’d remained behind, torn between disappointment that she hadn’t done it again, and complete and utter relief that she was staying away from him.” Holder writes young Derek having the instinct to know Kate’s attention isn’t good.

Now Holder does do some interesting bits of worldbuilding but like I said earlier it seems so patriarchal. Surrounding challenges and fighting. His view of humans in the book is one of paternalism. 

Kate is going in for the kill now and I’m crawling up my own spine. She makes herself come across as demure. She’s playing meek and turning the whole thing back on Derek giving him the illusion of choice as she grooms him. She purposefully is coming across as more of a peer than an adult figure with authority. 

“She swirled her fingers in the water. “And this isn’t really my style, you know?” I don’t come onto men like this.” Men. She thought of him as a man. He licked his lips, completely tongue-tied. “I wish you’d say something,” she murmured. “I’m kind of dying about it now. I’m sorry if I misread your intentions. I won’t bother you again.” “I know we’d have to be careful. Outsiders might not understand.”

Excuse me. Earlier Derek mentioned his rival -- his cousin Josh -- apparently Peter’s sister-in-law’s kid. Here he mentions Laura had made out with Josh the previous Wolf Moon. Did Laura make out with their cousin?!?!?!?!?!? There’s no other Josh in this book. Like I get they’re not blood related if Josh is Peter’s sister-in-law’s kid (which lol okay bro) but what is happening here on this day?

Kate wants Derek to come home with her for privacy -- ew. So Derek calls Laura to negotiate. Hence the whole conversation about Laura making out with cousin Josh. Laura says “This is so you can do something slutty.” I deeply dislike this characterization of Laura.

And now we’re in Kate’s narration for the flashbacks. I need a shower after reading her thoughts. God, I hate Kate.

Holder goes into detail about her ideas on werewolves. It’s interesting. There’s competition for rank within the pack, challenges and rituals. I want to do a post specifically about it maybe, but I am offended on Talia Hale’s behalf here. It’s very focused on males. The automatic assumption that the Alpha is Derek’s father.

 I cannot say fuck Kate enough. “Some kids in high school are babies and others are all grown up, ready for the real world. Like you.” The classic manipulation tactic of oh but you’re so mature for your age or oh they’re such an old soul. 

Wishing Kate Argent a go ahead and die.

☂️4 RW Fic: Ep.1 The Unbearable Tragedy Of Getting What You Want

Timeskip 3 years after season 3 cliffhanger. Allison gets everything she wants, Claire's back and so is Ray..but at what cost?

Director: And...Action!

A: I don't know Emma, should I really call him? I mean..yeah he's nice but don't you think I..don't you think I..should remember my line?

[The whole cast and crew laughed along with her. We see a montage of Allison becoming the best actress she's ever been, winning awards left and right. This truly was the happiest she's ever felt with her career. Later she returns home to her beautiful daughter and husband.]

C: Mom you're back!

A: Yes I am!! Come here I missed you!!

[Claire runs to her mom for a hug and that's when Ray appears to meet Allison]

R: Now don't tell me you forgot that line again, cause I know we spent a good time practicing

[Allison smiles and looks up at her husband]

R: Hey baby

[Allison goes to kiss Ray and is so filled with joy knowing that this was finally her heaven. Later the three of them eat at dinner retelling how their days went]

C: So mom, dad guess what?

Ray and Allison: Yes honey?

C: My job application got accepted! And I'll be starting next Monday!

A: That sounds great honey! You excited?

C: Yeah! Although.. I'm gonna be really busy and I'm not sure how often I'll see you guys.

[Allison looked sad but shows her understanding]

R: Claire, no need to worry about that okay? Your mom and I will always be here if you need us

C: Yeah I know dad.

A: Also honey, if you want I can get you an audition for my next project. If worse comes to worse.

[Claire sighed]

C: that's okay mom, I don't think acting's my thing.

A: I'm happy for you Claire

R: We're both happy for you!

[All three of them do cheers with their drinks at rhe dining table, and the night ends really sweetly, however the vibes from yesterday's events, would soon vanish]

The Next Day

A: I don't know Emma, should I really call him? I mean..yeah he's nice but don't you think I..don't you think I..should remember my line?

[The whole cast and crew laughed along with her. Allison thought to herself: wait, didn't I already say that before? Allison returns home to Ray and Claire, the same events occurred]

C: Mom you're back!

A: Yes I am!! Come here I missed you!!

[that's odd, why are the same statements from yesterday being said again?]

R: Now don't tell me you forgot that line again cause we practiced many times baby

[Allison was confused but still smiled, feeling a bit awkward, now it was later at dinner]

C: So mom, dad guess what?

Ray and Allison: Yes honey?

C: My job application got accepted! And I'll be starting next Monday!

A: That sounds great hone- [again, why is everyone repeating the same thing? It's so weird Claire notices]

C: Yeah mom? You think it sounds good?

[Allison tried to focus]

A: Yes of course honey sorry, I think work made me tired.

[Claire smiled and held Allison's hand]

C: That's okay mom, I'm just glad you and dad are here.

[Everyone goes to sleep, same events once again]

The Day After

A: I don't know Emma, should I really call him? I mean..yeah he's nice but don't you think I.. GOD NOT AGAIN

[The whole cast and crew laugh not knowing what's going on, or..do they? What how would they know? What is going on?? Allison feels so weird]

C: Mom you're back!

A: Yeah hey honey

[Claire frowns]

C: Mom? You okay?

A: Yeah I just um..feel weird

C: Weird how mom?

[Allison tries her best to shake off this weird feeling, maybe it's nothing and it's just a weird dream, regardless she'll be fine]

C: Mom! Are you even listening?

A: I'm sorry what?

C: Ugh, you never listen to me!

A: Wait what? Claire!

[Claire shows anger towards her mom all of a sudden, which not only made things even more odd, but also made Allison quilty for making her mad]

R: Allison, can I talk with you?

[Allison and Ray go to their room to have a conversation]

R: Now I know our daughter tends to have moments like this but, you sure you're fine baby?

A: I don't know Ray, I can't help but feel like..

R: Like what?

A: Something's wrong

R: Wrong? With what Claire?

A: No..but..did she ever have sudden outbursts like that?

R: Allison, she's a teenager you know when I was her age-

A: Ray..

R: Yes?

A: I feel like I'm having bad deja vu

R: Things seem familiar?

A: Too familiar, and repetitive. It's scaring me a little

R: Maybe you just had a bad dream honey, nothing bads been happening on set correct?

A: No..maybe I'm just going crazy

R: Hey now we don't use that word in this house alright? I'm sure today was just an off one and there's a new day tomorrow

A: Right..new day tomorrow..

[Allison didn't believe it one bit, so she decided to take notice of the same events that occur. Allison forgets her line again and again. She was getting frustrated]

A: what is going on??

[She says to herself in the car, she then wondered if she could change some events this time for today. She continues staying in her car]

[Curious Ray came inside in the car checking on Allison]

R: Hey babe you're home! How was work?

A: Ray can we talk?

R: Sure what is it?

A: If I told you that I forgot my line for today, what would you say?

R: Now don't tell me you forgot that line again, cause I know we spent a good time-

[Allison covers his mouth, she interrupts, she knew something was off]

A: I knew you'd say that! Oh my god..

[Ray laughs confused]

R: Baby what's going on?

A: Remember our conversation from yesterday? How things seem repetitive?

R: Yes Allison but-

A: I really do think something is wrong here, things have been repeating. I mess up at work, you and Claire greet me with the same words, same dinner..everything is the same each time!

R: How about we head inside Allison? Claire misses her mama and she got accepted for a new job!

[Ray says quickly almost as if he's ignoring what Allison said. Her eyes widen irritated]

A: Baby..did you not hear me? Wait..but Claire already told us about that, didn't she?

[Ray hides his panic by smiling and saying]

R: How about we head inside and have dinner with our daughter okay? If you want I can cook for all of us!

A: Baby! Stop and just listen to me!

R: Allison, enough okay you had a long day at work and..you're scaring me

[Allison gets mad]

A: Ray!

[Ray pulls on Allison's arm and she gets scared]

A: What are you doing??

[Allison sees Ray's reflection slowly fade into what resembles a bug like form that isn't human, she screams and gets out of the car, and she panics and looks for Claire]

A: Claire!! Claire!

R: She's not here baby

[Allison turns around frightened, she tries to use her powers on him, but it didn't work, why?]

A: You're not my husband, who are you and where's my daughter??!

[Ray smiled]

R: Oh Allison, don't be mad, I'm surprised it took you this long to find out

[Ray stretches out his hand to reveal that it's a fake reality and that the house they live in is actually hotel oblivion, which means she never got out]

R: it's interesting how much humans lose their morals once they want something, yet with you..you'd do anything to get your husband and daughter back, even if it means betraying your own family..

A: You leave my family out of this!! WHERE'S CLAIRE

R: She's here

C: Mom?

[Allison tries to run to her but he touches Claire and makes her disappear]

A: NO!!!!

[Allison sobs on the floor defeated, the fake Ray laughs]

R: How unfortunate, you've hurt your family again..

[Allison yells and attacks fake Ray, punching him ruthlessly and trying to strangle him, he laughs at her]

A: Why do you laugh monster?

R: If you kill me now you'll never get out of this hotel. Or see your family again..

[Allison tries to rumor but it still doesn't work, fake Ray laughs again, Allison punches him]

R: Oh wow, you also forgot that deal you made with boss

A: Boss?

R: Here's a recap for you babe

[He puts in her mind all of her erased memories on the deal she made with Reginald. and she remembers that she gave up on her powers in order to see Ray and Claire again, only to now realize those sacrifices she made were for nothing in the end]

R: Love is what makes humans weak each day, which is what you are..

A: This whole time..you've been working for him?

R: Oh yeah like you said I'm not your Ray, YOUR Ray actually passed by natural causes in the 60s..although I took care of the rest for you..

[Allison tears up in anger and devastation realizing that he's wearing the skin of her dead husband Ray]

A: And..Claire-

R: doesn't exist anymore

[Allison looks down at the ground defeated]

R: Now, let's head inside and continue living the life you want. We can forget that any of this happened so that you can be happy again.

[Allison planned on tricking fake ray into getting her powers back, but how..she then sees a puddle of marigold that came from fake Ray's injuries, and since he's the same alien race as Reginald, it gave her the benefit to consume to get her powers back. She was able to obtain the marigold]

R: Wait! No!

A: I heard a rumor..that you no longer exist

[Ray disappears and the whole hotel collapses around her, however the guardians that were kept in the hotel oblivion were released to who knows where, Allison runs as fast as she could]

[Song for destruction scene: "Lovely" by Billie Ellish and Khalid]

[She is now devastated as she realizes the consequences of her actions. Feeling the pain of losing her daughter again, Never seeing her husband, betrayed her family..where will the journey go for the rumor now?]

for the wip wednesday game: thisaac hate fuck :)

I have two versions for thee, one I did for the rules and one lil bit I shall share-

Theo sighed in relief, Lydia was safe- for now at least. Allison was with her for now until they had to rotate, and then he, Scott or Stiles just had to get there before Erica or Isaac.

Glancing around the room, he found Stiles with some random while Scott looked uncomfortable as hell with whatever Erica was saying.

That just left- ah fuck.

Theo turned his head towards his own partner, met by blue eyes and a cocky smirk wiggling his fingers in greeting. Eyes forward Theo, just grit and bare.

"Not gonna welcome me back?" Isaac asked, voice mockingly innocent as he leaned on his elbows, head tilted towards Theo.

"That would require literally anyone missing you."

Isaac's smirk just widened at that, glancing around the room. "Nah, no one else did, but I bet you did." Theo couldn't resist snorting at that, staring at the new werewolf letting his unamusment show.

"Keep dreaming asshole."

Blue eyes gleamed with glee at the reply. "If this was a dream, you wouldn't be wearing so many clothes." Isaac's voice dropped low, taking on a sultry teasing tone.

'Excuse me, what!' Theo's mind screamed, taking everything in him to not react to that. The wolfs eyes dropping down towards his chest and back up. Hands gripping the table beneath his fingers tight as he willed himself not to react.

"You're hearts racing Teddy, cat got your tongue?" A hand trailed down his arm before he shoved it off, glaring at the other boy.

"It's called a heart condition prick."

Isaac’s body barricaded him against the locker, trapping him in place with an arm across his chest.

Theo swallowed at the close proximity between the two of them, only Isaac's arm separating their chests. "Got you." Isaac whispered, smug smirk returning.

Erica had taken off down the corridor to find Lydia, he could only hope Stiles and Allison had got her out of the library and the school.

"Pretty stupid of you to come after us all on your lonesome." Isaac said, raising an almost curious eyebrow at Theo. Yeah, he hadn’t really thought the plan through, channeling his inner Stiles and winging it.

Theo tried to shrug the tall boy off of him, as expected, finding no success the grip of the arm holding him in place only tightening. Stupid hot superna- wait hot. No, no, no, no, nope.

"It's not her." Theo growled, glaring up at the wolf. "Lydia isn't the kanima." Isaac just rolled his eyes at that, jerking his head down the hallway towards the chemistry classroom from earlier.

"Explain what happened in there then."

He couldn't, but he knew Stiles was right. Something was going on with the resident red-headed ice queen, but it wasn't kanima related.

Theo groaned, once again straining against the hold to try and escape, only finding himself shoved back against the row of lockers and Isaac stepping even closer into his space.

"Come on pretty boy, don't make me hurt you."

His breath hitched, feeling Isaac’s own against his nose from the close proximity. Blue eyes boreing into green. Theo felt his heart rate pick up and just knew Isaac heard it too, glancing down and back up.

Isaac's eyes flickered across his face, dropping down and up, increasingly darkening every second. Nostrils flaring ever so slightly.

Theo felt his own body react against his screaming will. Screaming at him to fucking think. His eyes dropped down down to Isaac’s lips.

Blue eyes watched the movement.

ARC Review: The Lady Thief of Belgravia by Allison Grey

4/5. Releases 1/18/2024 (audio).

Vibes: Sydney/Vaughn (if you know... you know) otherwise known as spy/handler, coiffed gentleman/brassy broad, My Fair Lady but make it espionage and also there's fucking

Heat Index: 6/10

It's rare for expert pickpocket Della Rose to get caught--and rarer still for the person she's stolen from to hire her to steal from a duke. But the payout Cole Winthrop (secret operative/lord) offers is too good to resist. In order for Della to succeed, Cole must teach her how to pass as a fine lady--but the more time they spend together, the more they get under one another's skin, and the harder it becomes to imagine the day they'll part.

Historical romances with lite mystery elements are hit or miss for me, and espionage historicals... even more so. But something about this one--maybe it's the fact that it's a debut--made me want to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did! It's a run romcom with fun sparks between a sleek, cool hero and a heroine who frankly doesn't give a fuck about his deal and turns his world upside down. It really does lean in to the My Fair Lady/Pretty Woman vibes, which keeps Della from coming off as grating. There are some aspects that could've perhaps been a bit tighter, but it's a debut with a strong voice and a focus on the love story, which is something I've found a lot of historical romances with mystery arcs miss. I enjoyed the undercover spy stuff (I mean really, it's more undercover than mystery but that all blends together for me) and I had even more fun watching Cole and Della fall in love and break through each other's walls.

Quick Takes:

--Della Rose is the type of character I have a hard time buying into: a tough, hardscrabble woman who eschews high society and doesn't need a man!!! Like, great, but I tend to prefer refined ice queens or women who actually like... do want to fall in love. And there were points in the beginning of the book where I was like "I don't know if this girl is going to work for me".

But she does work, and I want to get into why. Yes, Della is mouthy and brassy and an extremely competent pickpocket, and so on. However, she also has deep-seated vulnerabilities and fears, and the narrative makes it clear that these aspects of her personality? Are really driving a lot of that brassiness. And yeah, she does actually want to be loved. She's a bit awed by the luxury of Cole's home. She WANTS nice things. She WANTS a soft place to land. She WANTS to be touched and kissed and comforted by this compelling, accomplished man--but she doesn't trust that she can accept all of this and be safe at the same time. She believes the rug is going to be pulled out from under her, and she's prickly and guarded in advance.

Which like--should be something we see a lot of, and I think many writers believe they're conveying this, but they forget to write in the character beats Grey adds. I won't lie: at points, I was like "Della, get over this shit, be with him". But then Grey would write something that reminded me of why this woman was being so difficult. Because she's like me and you and every other woman who's a bit too snarky and a bit too frosty because she can't accept love. And she can't accept love because she doesn't trust it. WHEW.

--This is a heroine-forward romance, but Cole is still a strong hero. He's got his own tragic backstory, it's good if not super original, and he is a very good spy and he is hot and there is a moment when they're outside and he has her up against a wall or something and he jerks his glove off so he can finger her properly and THAT. SHIT. HIT.

However, where Cole shines is in being in love with Della. Like, these two are immediately attracted to each other, but I super disagree with the reviews that call this instalove. It's by no means an emotional or physical slow burn, but it's also not instalove or fuck first feelings later. It totally makes sense that these two would fall for each other relatively quickly. They're spending all their time together. And the more time Cole spends with her, the more he gets all heart eyes--and why wouldn't he? Della is a cool broad! They actually have a lot in common! Cole has a competence kink, and honestly, he's right for it.

What keeps Cole from being just... besotted and without conflict... is a little shallow compared to what Della's dealing with. But it does what it needs to do, and I actually really liked a hero that was basically on a "I love you but no, I can't give you everything you need" level. Their conflicts actually did make sense to me. They weren't the most original conflicts, but they didn't annoy me.

--Della is one of those characters that is like, only looking out for herself... but also like, that one person who super matters to her. And I enjoyed that she had a female friend (who I hope gets her own book) with a consistent presence. I also loved that they were kind of scammy together.

Cole also has a friend and mentor, who's basically a wise older woman. I enjoy historical romance heroes who get advice from women who've been around the block because the heroes themselves are dumb and don't understand how their hearts work.

--There are a lot of cute scenes where Della is acting undercover as Cole's COUSIN and he's like, desperate to have her, staring longingly, watching with irritation as she dances with other dudes.... And everyone is all "dude that's your cousin...."

--Audiobook note: solid narrator. I think she captured Della's voice and personality well, while also giving an appropriate gravity and lovelorn vibe to Cole.

The Sex:

The sex is good in this one! It starts a bit more chill and light, and builds as Cole and Della's feelings grow. I mean, I really loved that glove moment. I really did.

But you also get some super good angsty sex towards the end. Della was super living on the edge at points, but it made sense and reflected her getting all twisted up in the game as she fell harder for Cole.

Also, Cole is one of those guys who corrects her when she says "fuck me" and is like "um excuse me I am going to MAKE LOVE to you" which really. Reflects their different perspectives on shit. Cole is one of THOSE but then when shit hits the fan he's also one of THOSE. Good for Della.

Anyway, this was a super cute first book out, and I definitely want to read more from Allison Grey. There were points in the last act where I was definitely thinking "Please pull yourselves together", but then... it did. I really liked how the book came together in the end. Yay! Always nice to see a new historical romance author dipping their toe in the water.
