2023 writing gif-making round up
Rules (adapted for fic, gifs, art, etc.): Share what you made this year! It can be works you posted to Ao3, Wattpad, Tumblr, or anywhere else! You can share everything you made or just the projects you're most excited about. tagged by @reasonandfaithinharmony! thank you, friend!
buckle up, friends, because I somehow posted 98 gif sets this year and it's probably going to be 100 sets by the end of the year tbh. that number sounds so ridiculous. it's all your faults because part of the reason why I made so much was because I felt so encouraged and loved by the people I've gotten to know and know better this year, so thank you.
I started trying to put all the sets in a post and that just got overwhelming for me to look at so we're doing my top favorites with some fun statistics at the end. I think it'll come as no surprise that I mostly made rwrb and heartstopper sets this year, so I decided to do my top 5 rwrb sets, top 5 heartstopper sets, and top 10 miscellaneous sets.
top 5 rwrb sets
page to screen ripped pages: this is the first set I made after the movie was released. I worked on it for hours and really enjoy how it turned out. the text placement was what took the longest. I knew what words from each passage I wanted to highlight so it took some rearranging to make sure those were visible.
acd x all american bitch: the idea for this came about when casey posted an instagram story of GUTS and songs that correspond with their characters. I love me some bi coloring, so using that for this set was really fun!
firstprince x wildest dreams: I don't know what it is about this set that makes me love it so much. I think it's the shade of pink and then the light orange from the text.
henry "that is him, part and parcel": I adore henry and bea and that's all I have to say about this set.
firstprince x exile: I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the tags for this one and I am not sorry at all for the pain I have caused. I got the idea for this set after sending @kiwiana-writes the fake fic title "I gave so many signs" and they wrote a heartwrenching summary. I immediately wanted to do something with it!
top 5 heartstopper sets
moments of healing: day two of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration for this year. putting this together made me really emotional. I'm so grateful for alice and these moments of communication we get on the show.
imogen x ballad of a homeschooled girl: yes, I did intentionally use colors on the lesbian flag for this set. it was actually going to be purple at first to match the GUTS album but I didn't like how it looked. I tried pink, liked it, wondered what color worked with pink, and thus the color palette was born!
narlie x brighter than sunshine: day 3 of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration. as schitt's creek fans know (and as a couple people pointed out in the tags), this is the song that plays at the end of "Meet the Parents." I think I knew right away I was going to use this song for this day of the event.
narlie x fearless (taylor's version): I still can't believe I made this set. it's something just last year I would have deemed too complicated. I'm proud of myself for this one.
charlie standing up to ben: this set idea was suggested by @swiftlythebest. idk if this was intentional on alice's part, but I really enjoy how charlie says similar sentiments in both episodes. like "leave me alone" -> "I don't want to see you ever again."
top 10 miscellaneous sets
alexis rose + "destined to be on fire": I can't believe how much I've grown as a gif maker over the past three years and this set shows that growth. I also adore alexis and her journey.
david/patrick open mic: I made this set once I got back home from seeing noah in concert. I was truly close to tears during the concert when I realized I was watching him perform a song from a show I have loved for three years.
david/patrick relationship dynamic: @reasonandfaithinharmony @roseapothecary and @rmd-writes are to thank for this set coming into existence. the fact that I had so many scenes to choose from shows that this truly is david and patrick's dynamic.
schitt's creek + barbie posters: I knew right away what kind of barbie david and alexis were going to be.
GUTS + favorite lyrics: god I really love this set. the typography? the coloring? I really outdid myself.
the good witch + ages: another set I just absolutely adore. I love the shades of pink I used. also, maisie, thank you for including consecutive years in the album because it really would have bugged me if they weren't lol
danandphilgames + fuck land: my url becomes relevant again! if you told me at the start of this year that the gaming channel would be back, I would not have believed you.
calliette x love affair: I really love the overlays for this one. it just ended up working well on its own with little manipulation from me. the song is from the end of the last episode. it worked great for the antagonists event!
ellie x you're on your own, kid: I had this idea for a few weeks before I actually got around to making it. I remember being worried and surprised that no one else that I saw did a set with this song.
vampire by olivia rodrigo: the lyric "bloodsucker, fame fucker" really did something to me.
fun statistics: out of the 98 sets I made
39 are rwrb
34 are heartstopper
8 are schitt's creek
6 are music artists
5 are dan and phil
4 are the last of us
1 is tarlos
1 is calliette
32 use taylor lyrics
tagging (no pressure of course!) @roseapothecary @swiftlythebest @rmd-writes @leclercpiastri @mulderscully @victoriaspriing and if anyone else wants to do this, feel free to say I tagged you!

Current Top Ten Olivia Rodrigo Songs
I've found myself talking about Olivia Rodrigo's music a lot lately (mostly screeching about entry #2), so I'm finally going to give her a list! Though I've never been much of a "drivers license" fan, I still got really into her with the release of SOUR--the end of my junior year in high school could have been soundtracked solely with that album (+ "Rollin'" by Brave Girls!).
1. good 4 u
I mean, I would love to have a more surprising pick for number one, but this one's a classic for a reason! Like, I remember what was going on in my life when I first heard "good 4 u"--it's a landmark all on its own. And that dramatic lead-in to the bridge? I feel my heart explode in my chest every. single. time.
2. girl i've always been
This one is new, but it blew me away from the first listen. It's not a big spectacle like "so american", but the understated acoustic atmosphere is executed so well that I can't look away! This country-inspired sound is unusual for Olivia, but she acclimates to it so well, I think--I feel so comfortable in this song, it doesn't feel unfamiliar at all. And the line "well, I have captors I call friends" is worth a spot on this list all on its own.
3. jealousy, jealousy
This is my "brutal". In "jealousy, jealousy", the burn-it-all-down angst we know and love Olivia Rodrigo's music for has been smoothed out --it's cold, cruel, withdrawn. It's the girl dressed in all black who sits alone at lunch and glares at the popular kids from across the cafeteria, taking on her loneliness with grace and elegance and absolutely vicious resignation, and when I listen to this song, I get to feel as cool and above-it-all as that girl for a few minutes. I don't actually want to be this imaginary girl, but Olivia's music often lets me play a character for a bit--and this one is by far my favorite!
4. 1 step forward, 3 steps back
Okay this has, like, sentimental value. "1 step forward, 3 steps back" was there for me when I really needed it... I love how delicate it is, and I love harmonizing to the bridge, but it's really just here because I keep it like a security blanket.
5. all-american bitch
The ballads on GUTS didn't really work for me--the lyrics felt uncomfortably blunt, too generalized to be impactful, more like lectures than stories. But "all-american bitch", a big rock track with lots of screaming??? These lyrics GOT ME. My nonbinary experience of femininity has its own nuances, but all the stereotypes and expectations placed on the Perfect Good Girl still affect so much of who I am. In "all-american bitch", the bluntness of the lyrics actually works in its favor. It's scathing--just straight-up listing all the stereotypes and expectations and judgements placed on women is revealing, exposing their contradictions, and I think it takes away a little of their power. Honestly, this song is so powerful that it's a little much for me most of the time--I tend to avoid it, despite how much I like it--but I can't deny how fantastic it is.
6. favorite crime
Admittedly, I think "Partner in Crime - Spotify Singles" by Lucy Dacus is this song but better. I like both songs a whole lot, though, and the vocal layering in "favorite crime" is a shot right through the heart.
7. enough for you
This is pretty much interchangeable with "favorite crime"--a solid storyline with a genuine, compellingly fragile performance. I don't know, it just works!
8. get him back!
The flat delivery in the verses set against the soaring chorus is EVERYTHING. This is a low-stakes song, about a guy we never really liked anyway, so it's pure fun and wordplay and screaming just because you can.
9. can't catch me now
God, the vocal layering is breathtaking. (Look, I'm a man of simple tastes. I like when the harmonies do the harmony thing!!!!!)
10. ballad of a homeschooled girl
I think this song is hilarious--"ballad of a homeschooled girl" takes all the self-policing and overanalyzing and internal screaming required to be seen as 'normal', that constant stream of 'no don't do that no you can't say that no stop oh shit what did i just do she probably thinks i'm so weird', and turns up the intensity to the point where it's a sort of comedy skit. I think it's absolutely delightful to scream my worries out through this song, to honestly express the daily stresses of just existing outside my house and laugh about them, too. (Also, the "every guy I like is gay" line just makes me laugh, though I've heard that my take is an unpopular one.)
honorable mentions: happier, bad idea right?, love is embarrassing (WATCH AS I CRUCIFY MYSELF !!!!!), teenage dream (yeah i like this one, kind of against my will but i think it works way better than the other guts ballads!), so american (OH GOD I'M GONNA MARRY HIM / IF HE KEEPS THIS SHIT UP !!!)

eagerly anticipating your opinions on guts
i like it! i honestly wasn't expecting to like it as much as i do - it was kind of low on the list of new albums to listen to (still haven't listened to the new mitski) and i bumped it up the list for you and also because i heard she leaned more into the rock side of her sound, which is the side i prefer. off of sour i mostly only really liked "brutal", "good 4 u", and "jealousy, jealousy". like i could tell she was good. i just grew up in the lorde/lana/halsey era so i didn't really need more ballads in sad indie girl voice.
but guts is really good. i even like the ballads! it makes me want to gatekeep her. protect her. not just because she talks about insecurities but bc somehow the pop star from disney is making rock songs satirizing americana and it's not THAT edgy but she is SUPER mainstream and it might be too edgy for the mainstream-est, you know? sonically it reminds me a bit of "the one" by marika hackman which is a song about selling out. which gives you an idea of what we're working with here. a middle ground between mainstream and indie/alternative that she and marika came at from opposite directions
a few track by track thoughts:
1. all-american bitch - probably my fave. i love when women scream
2. bad idea right? - my favorite part of sour was singing along to brutal and going "god! it's brutal out here!" along with her and this has that same sort of sound. you can tell she was an actress - she really puts character in her voice
3. vampire - one of the weaker songs imo
4. lacy - i like when she talks about comparing herself to other women and feeling sad. jealousy, jealousy
5. ballad of a homeschooled girl - this feeling is not exclusive to homeschooled girls. if you're autistic you can go to school for years and still be bad at social skills 👍
6. making the bed - also way too fucking relatable. it's me hi i'm the problem it's me
7. logical - as a star trek fan it is impossible for me to take a song with this title seriously. "love is never logical" thanks spock i already knew that since i didn't grow up on a planet where people repress all emotions. only some of them
8. get him back! - same as bad idea right, so fun
9. love is embarrassing - same as bad idea right and get him back
10. the grudge - it's fine. i've heard other songs like it
11. pretty isn't pretty - what i said about lacy
12. teenage dream - i know people are touchy about comparing her to taylor swift since copyright law is fucking stupid but BIG nothing new vibes. very "how long will it be cute / all this crying in my room / when you can't blame it on my youth". this is the one that makes me want to hug her and go don't worry. you haven't peaked at 19 trust me you're doing great and you're gonna keep growing and changing.
tl;dr this album is good and also activated my older sibling tendencies. y'all be nice to her okay?

Hiiiiii 🩷 what did you think of Guts? 💜💜💜💜
Luce my love!! Hello!!! I always love hearing from you <3 <3 <3
I really like it! I overall enjoy the sound and production more than I did for Sour. The more alt-rock/pop punk sound suits her voice really well, and it's fun to see such a successful, younger artist gravitate towards that sound. I like more songs on this one than I did her first.
Right now my favorites are All-American Bitch, Lacy, Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl, Bad Idea Right?, and Get Him Back!
She's already grown a lot lyrically, I really admire her ability to create tongue-in-cheek lines right next to very sincere ones.
Being in my 30s, I'm lowkey a lil jealous of the kids who are around her age and having this record be a part of their growing days. This is a great album to listen to for an older teen/young adult experiencing that weird transitory period between teendom and adulthood. Then again, I don't know if any of us ever really shake that awkwardness, lol. Olivia is really great at capturing what it's like to be young, and I think she's just very emblematic of how youth looks and feels in the 2020s. Guts took that energy from Sour and just expanded on it and added even more polish.
What do you think?? What are your favorites right now?

Vampire: You called them crazy God I hate the way I called them crazy too
Lacy: Aren't you the sweetest thing on this side of Hell?
Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl: Stumbled over all my words Made it weird, then made it worse
Making the Bed: And I'm playin' the victim so well in my head
Logical: And I fell for you like water Falls from the February sky
Get Him Back: I wanna get him back I wanna make him really jealous, wanna make him feel bad
Love is Embarrassing: For some weird second string Loser who's not worth mentionin' My God, love's embarrassing as hell
The Grudge: And we both drew blood, but, man, those cuts were never equal
Pretty Isn't Pretty: There's always something in the mirror that I think looks wrong
Teenage Dream: And when are all my excuses of learning my lessons gonna start to feel sad? Will I spend all the rest of my years wishing I could go back?
