Ant Colony (From Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls) (Alissa Nutting) "When space on earth became very limited, it was declared all people had to host another organism on or inside of their bodies. Many people chose something noninvasive, such as barnacles or wig-voles. Some women had breast operations that allowed them to accommodate small aquatic life within implants. But because I was already perfectly-breasted (and, admittedly, vain) I sought out a doctor who, for several thousands of dollars, drilled holes into my bones to make room for an ant colony."
It is with that paragraph that begins Ant Colony, a short story published as part of the book Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls, the debut short story collection of author Alissa Nutting. Beside the obvious Corruption theme of its very premise, the rest of the story also touches on another, often overlooked element of this Entity: Twisted, unhealthy love."

The Masque of the Red Death (Edgar Allan Poe) "The Red Death was a disease spread throughout the land, and eventually taking on a physical form to spread the disease to those nobles who isolated themselves. It came in the form of a party goer dressed as a victim of the disease, manifesting in the way that would cause the most terror as they realised it could not be escaped or killed. It fits the theme of disease and other parts of the Corruption manifesting as something human-ish, as well as it gradually consuming even those of try to escape it."
Ant Colony, cont.: The plot twist of the story is that the ants hadn't begun eating the nameless narrator alive from within because the queen ant hated her, as the other doctors she talks to had theorized, but because the doctor who she had paid to implant the ants into her bones, who had already been established as having a creepy crush on her, had been purposely manipulating things in order to get the ants to assimilate her consciousness and eat her whole from the very beginning, all so that he could get the ant colony to inhabit him next because, as he puts it: "When you all crawl inside of me, we will all be one forever."

YouTube recommended me an hour and a half long video outrage essay about Alissa Nutting's novel Tampa and I'm this close to going off the fucking grid. It's like Lolita came out yesterday I swear. If you can't deal with fictional narratives that evoke extreme discomfort and even disgust without lashing out in a panic and calling for their censorship, then stop consuming challenging art and start consuming ASMR.

Transgressive Book Club?
I would love to start a transgressive book club (for people 18+) because I love transgressive books and want to be able to talk to someone about them, but I feel a little uncomfortable about recommending them to friends for obvious reasons. But also I have no idea how to start a book club or get people to join it or where I would even find people who would be interested. It would be authors like Chuck Palahniuk, Scott Heim, Alissa Nutting, Dennis Cooper, Kola Boof, Irvine Welsh, etc. (Maybe even JT Leroy if we feel like engaging in some interesting discourse.) Also some transgressive classics like Lolita, Naked Lunch, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, and the like. So if there are any adults who would be interested in this, please let me know! Because I'd really like to do this.
#pls let me know if anyone would be interested in this bc i would really love to do it but idk where to find anyone else who would be#but only if you are 18+#absolutely no hate to teenagers but this would have to be an adult-only thing#book club#book club invitation#transgressive books#transgressive book#chuck palahniuk#dennis cooper#scott heim#alissa nutting#kola boof#bret easton ellis#irvine welsh#bookblr#reading

Book that I love but usually don’t recommend because it’s weird or intense: Tampa by Alissa Nutting. It’s absolutely excellent in terms of writing and its use of satire, but I can’t expect people to stomach the content just like that.

Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman was a really good horror book i read.
Im not quite sure how to explain it without spiling anything
I started reading it as soon as I got this ask and so far I really like the writing style. Writing style is such an important aspect for me to enjoy a book. Author's like Poppy Z Brite and Alissa Nutting are my FAVORITE because their writing is so lively and the description is immaculate. I try to have a writing style that's detailed as well and doesn't feel dull.

just finished reading: tampa by alissa nutting (336 pages)
This book is really well-written. The MC is extremely hateable (naturally). It’s perspective is very engaging, making it surprisingly easy to read despite obviously being upsetting by nature, I finished it in a day. The prose is great. Some people may say this book was written for shock, that the author wrote this just to be an edgelord, or something like that, like in The 120 Days of Sodom. I think those people are wrong and they would probably say that about any book that had to do with p*dophilia or with a morally disagreeable main character. People like that, who can’t deal with more taboo subject matter, who lack media literacy, should probably stay reading whatever Coffee Shop AU fanfic they’re used to. This is like American Beauty if it was good, and if Kevin Spacey wasn’t in it.
Favorite Quote: “Like a tollbooth in his memory, every partner he'd have afterwards would have to pass through the gate of my comparison, and it would be a losing equation. The numbers could never be as favorable as they were right now, when his naivete would be subtracted from my experience to produce the largest sum of astonishment possible.”
Rating: 5/5 ★★★★★

The Voice in the Night (William Hope Hodgson) "The main character and his fiancée, aboard the ship Albatross, were abandoned by the ship's crew, who took the remaining lifeboats. After building a raft, they escaped from the sinking vessel and found an apparently abandoned ship in a nearby lagoon, covered with a fungus-like growth. They attempted to remove this growth from the living quarters but were unable to do so; it continued to spread, and so they returned to their raft. The nearby island was also covered with this growth, except for a narrow beach. Eventually, the man and his fiancee found the fungus growing on their skin and felt an uncontrollable urge to eat it. They discovered that other humans on the island have been entirely absorbed by the strange fungal growth.
As the man in the rowboat rows away from the sailors to whom he is telling his tale, just as the sky is lightening, the narrator can dimly see a grotesquely misshapen figure in the rowboat, scarcely recognisable as human. LINK"

And what an insufferable anguish, to be surrounded with brightness but radiate nothing at all.

This was a TBR Jar Pull.
I don’t think I am going to rate this one. Mostly because I have no idea what to rate it.
I am not going to post the cover for this one, I know that I have posted really questionable covers but this one I don’t feel comfortable sharing. Especially when taking account of the subject matter and what this book is about.
Tampa by Alissa Nutting.
The writing style was okay. It was told through 1st person perspective. This is about a woman who is just starting her teaching career, but she is trying to seek out a student that she can groom and be with.
This was not easy to read, as is with anything of this nature. It was interesting to read, especially after reading My Dark Vanessa earlier this year. I did find that the writing seemed simple but flowy- it was an easy quick read but the author has room to improve her craft. The characters very much embodied what they were supposed to be, but fell a bit flat whenever they could have shown more depth to their personalities.
This did have explicit material, so if that’s something that you are not able to read, do not pick this up. This isn’t something you are supposed to “enjoy” but I definitely recommend you follow your gut and respect your own boundaries.

What book did you read today?
Tampa by Alissa Nutting! It's more of a psychological book than horror but it's equally as disturbing. As I've stated before I am a huge horror fan and I love disturbing literature, though I understand that people don't have the same tastes as I do! And if you're one of those people, I strongly advise steering away from this book! I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to a non-disturbing lit fan! Always look at trigger warnings.
