so my singular and closest amigo is like a huge f1 fan which is kinda wild & random ( but not really bc everyone loves louis hamilton even if his first name is sir or smth i really dont know ) and seeing her engage in fandom has been subliminally brainwashing me so i had the thought:
there's seemingly not a centralized chess fandom on tumblr, but chess has seen an exponential boom in popularity, globally, and ppl do make posts abt the players, like you little freaks are out there. so as someone whose more into chess than the average bloke and has been for like a year and a half (and would thusly be able to talk abt the games and memes), i dont know why we aren't collectively sharing in the parasocial part of chess.
like there's so much drama all the time, friggin bum beads are now a core part of the lore, bobby fischer exists, gotham covers games literally daily like you can unclench levy its ok, magnus is always fckn about, hikaru fought some guy he lost a game to a couple of years ago, every dubov clip i've seen is him saying smth unhinged or doing like 1 million pull ups and he looks like he's my age but he's like TWENTY SEVEN HELLO?!, rapport and ding are the people's couple etc etc
like why are we not having fun with this lol?
as with all things, i've been influenced, and in my sleep deprived state i think its the perfect opportunity to cause more damage to tumblr :)
so do ur thing you animals, let's actually make this happen, lets make chess fun and cringe and creative and equally as involved as its youtube / video counterparts reflect — if anyone wants to be moots just comment or follow me! :D

The 18th World Chess Champion is 18 Years Old!
Congratulations to the new classical world chess champion: Gukesh Dommaraju. The 18 year-old has become The youngest Undisputed Classical World Chess Champion in history. An unprecedented accomplishment! He leads a group of young players born after the turn of the millennium who are now making chess's world stage their own.
To become The World Champion, Gukesh beat 17th World Champion Ding Liren, at one time the world #3 for years and considered one of the top players in the world, he emerged from the pandemic struggling to replicate his earlier performances. Ding put up a tough fight, and did better than many expected, but chess is unforgiving and a mistake late in the last game of the match has cost him the title.
The young champion Gukesh is the second player from India to become the undisputed world champion after the 15th world champion Viswanathan Anand.
Ramblings below the cut ✂
In chess there are two main mountains: The classical world championship and the top spot on the rating list. Gukesh for himself, for India and for the new generation has claimed the world championship. Gukesh sits at #5 in the world on the rating list with a rating of 2776.8. This puts him behind World #4 Arjun Erigaisi, another Indian prodigy, age 21 who has rocketed up the rating lists in the last year earning a rating 2800.6, 15th highest ever!
Gukesh and Arjun are joined by Nodirbek Abdusattorov age 20, from Uzbekistan world#6 (2767.6) and Alireza Firouzja the 21 year old, world #7 (2763), originally from Iran now residing in France and identifying as French after leaving Iran due to their policy of not letting their players play against those from Israel. Alireza Firouzja is worth particular note as up until today he was considered the top of the new generation. Dubbed the prince of chess. Alireza who has so far peaked at #2 in the world, with a rating of 2804 (back in late 2021) and notably has the highest ability of the new generation at speed chess. Which has emerged as a new arena of play, rivaling that of the classical time format. Alireza has struggled with high pressure events, which has been the seperating factor between him and the Indian stars.
Ahead of our young rising stars are
World #3
37 year old Hikaru Nakamura (current: 2802, peak: 2816)
A top 10 player for many years, Hikaru would pivot to twich and youtube, and speed chess events for a few years and he would emerge as perhaps the most popular chess player in the current media landscape. This gave him the security to return to Classical Chess and surge to the top 2 or 3 where he has stayed for quite some time.
World #2 Fabiano Caruana (Current: 2803.4, peak: 2844)
The quiet 32 year old American has had a legendary career so far. He lost the 2018 world championship (the first one I watched live!) in the tiebreak portion and has since not had a chance to compete for the title again. In terms of rating lists and tournament performance Fabiano Caruana is the definitive #2 player of the past 15 years.
Lastly of course, is the World #1
Magnus Carlsen
The 34 year old Norwegian, currently rated 2831, peak rating of 2882
From 2013-2023 he was The World Champion, and has been the #1 player on the rating list since 2011, not once leaving that spot since. During the 2010's Magnus would come and go with speed chess, almost always winning, like usual, when he did play. He pivoted to online speed chess events during the pandemic and has more or less elected to stick with that. Magnus vacated the world championship in 2023 after deciding he was done being bored and frustrated with a format he had complained about for a decade. Magnus has more or less retired from classical play, playing only the occasional event and focusing on other endeavors and speed chess events. To simplify a bit, Magnus has basically run out of things to do in chess so he's doing other things and playing chess when he feels like it.
When Magnus vacated the title he did so after learning his challenger would be Ian Nepomniachtchi one of the best in the world but someine Magnus had definitively beat in in the 2022 World Championship. Whats interesting is Magnus had said he'd defend the title if Alireza was the one who won the right to challenge him. Magnus has maintained a love for Alireza's playing style and high praise for his talent. Saying multiple times how much he enjoys watching him play and playing against him. Especially in speed chess. So of course, with Magnus commentating on the 2024 world title match, and Gukesh's win. Magnus' co-hosts have asked him if he's interested in trying to get a match with Gukesh and Magnus said no. Personally I think this stems more from Magnus just disliking the title format than anything else.
Still! That leaves interesting questions and contests to come! For the world champion, he wont need to defend his title until 2026. He'll be 20, and likely an even stronger player. But both his peers and his seniors,, especially Fabiano Caruana are challengers who will always pose a threat.
As for the rating list.
1,2&3 are all 30+
4,5,6&7 are all under 25
Its going to be very interesting to see when the kids pass the vets. Eventually it'll be interesting to see just how high these new players peak and the change they have on the game.
It'll be interesting to watch the battles they have with each other and the occasional battles they have with Magnus who remains the best in the world. Be it in speed chess or the occasional classical game.

Magnus Carlsen Edges Past Praggnanandhaa in Norway Chess
In the latest showdown at Norway Chess, Magnus Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa’s second clash ended in a draw, with Carlsen clinching victory in the Armageddon clash. Carlsen, a five-time world champion, now leads the tournament by a full point over Hikaru Nakamura.
Intense Battles and Tactical Defenses
In a thrilling match, Alireza Firouzja showcased remarkable tactical defenses, salvaging a draw against Nakamura. Despite being under pressure, Firouzja displayed exceptional resilience, making 20 consecutive top moves, according to GM David Howell.
Carlsen himself acknowledged Praggnanandhaa’s adept defense, admitting, “I didn’t get anything out of the classical game. Pragg defended well.” Despite the draw, Carlsen managed to secure victory in the Armageddon clash, crucial for maintaining his lead in the tournament.
Nakamura’s Collapse and Carlsen’s Tenacity
While Nakamura stumbled, he praised Carlsen for his ability to excel in critical moments, citing Carlsen’s past performances in pivotal matches. Nakamura noted Carlsen’s resilience, highlighting his knack for securing victories when it matters most.
Remaining Matches and Standings
With two rounds remaining, Praggnanandhaa faces tough clashes against Caruana and Nakamura. Meanwhile, Vaishali continues to chase the leaders in the women’s Norway Chess, with Ju Wenjun leading the standings.
Despite facing setbacks, Vaishali remains determined to overcome the challenges in the final rounds and make her mark in the tournament.
Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament reaches its thrilling conclusion!

i think what makes my feelings on hans so muddled is that there seems to be no discernable truth to him, there's no concrete narrative or even throughline to hold onto.
i started out believing hans, partly bc my initial view on magnus was shaped by my inclination to contrarianism, but also bc the facts simply aren't in his favor. looking at this tangibly, what magnus said, alongside the prevailing undercurrent characterizing hans, has been rooted purely in bias and irrationality.
however, grandmasters have been speaking on how his play is uncharacteristically engine-like, both his playing style and level are notably unstable and he's not consistently good in any format. he has no foundational characteristics. which is suspicious when you're operating in a sector predicated on skill and ranking.
on the other hand, magnus' loss to him has been analyzed as reasonable through both fair play and quality analysis, with it being said that his strategy was simply impaired on the day. and its not like magnus hasn't been susceptible to being psychologically affected by elements he finds suspicious or distracting before. however, magnus' impaired play doesn't preclude hans from cheating, and him making a few inaccuracies or blunders could easily have been intentional. yet, i would immediately write off the theorizing and confirmation bias inherent in sustaining this position, and i initially did, except hans is the one who most incriminates himself in this whole situation.
however, i honestly think hans' reactions thus far have been completely understandable, i think there's reason to his hyperbolic and paranoid view of chesscom and the top players, and how scarring and overwhelming it must be to be dogpiled and ostracized, especially as a teen and burgeoning talent. its obvious why your idols persecuting and shunning you must've crushed him, or how bravado would be an instinctive mask to that. or even that he would demand more from bystanders like levy for example, and would regard impartiality as betrayal when the definitive narratives around him were so punitive and overt. its clear why he would be impulsive and retaliative and uncordial. i think hans is right that his life was ruined over nothing™.
but i also know that the nothing in question is only for present proof, and that regardless, demonstrably, he has a propensity to morally grandstand and equate punishment with remorse, which is partly justified bc at least he has been punished, but the question of magnus or even hikaru's dues begin to grow dubious when its not just them who constructed the cheater narrative, it preceded and eclipses them. its not merely a reactionary stance, but one rooted in consensus and skillful inclination. but magnus was also vulnerable to confirmation bias, and the inconsistency in which cheaters they play holds gravity.
which makes one think abt what exactly in him elicits sm ire, and whether its truly his play or rather his attitude — which is further complicated by magnus' eagerness to nurture the youth, and his embracing of competition he sees as genuine and substantive, with him platforming alireza, pragg and others, despite the former's equally inconsistent play, yet historic aptitude with faster time controls and success in less pressurized events. this eliminates hubris or elitism as magnus' motivating factor, especially when his legacy goals are so attuned to the youth and fostering their growth and succession.
ultimately, it blurs the lines between bias and justification: when hans has a history of cheating which he vehemently downplays, obfuscates and cherrypicks, and consequently twists the juvenile shellshock that could've resulted in his pisspoor post-game analysis into smth more implicating and sinister. it calls into question the premature and subpar blunders he makes, or his association with a supposed anti-cheating figure like kramnick. and also forces equal skepticism when he psychologically outmaneuvers elite talents like wesley, and when he unexpectedly loses to typically middling IMs. and where this otherwise would have been branded an expected lapse, hans' glaring lack of stylistic and rating consistency, supposed cheating in both prize and non-prize events, and overall cheating history, which extends into the hundreds in actuality, will forever cast doubt on him — painting him as more of a glory cheater if anything.
the central question remains, why exactly is a guy so historically inconsistent now in the top 20, and what delineable evolution has he underwent in his play when he's still as inconsistent as ever. turning what may have otherwise been a witch-hunt into smth inadvertently understandable. hans is overt in his irregularity, he's unabashed. but, he's also logically and evidentially innocent.
hans can't account for his growth, yet neither can his detractors. he's an amorphous oscillation relegated perpetually to inscrutability. he's an inherent contradiction, and any objectivity we try apply is inevitably refracted through his personhood, and whatever sentiment he reflects back at you. the question of hans' validity, of his professional narrative, is now his career. hans is tasked with completing a picture with colours he doesn't have.
there is no way to know, no vision to clarify, and i hate that.
#just rambling ig#chessblr#magnus carlsen#chess#hikaru nakamura#speed chess#hans niemann#alireza firouzja#the only elucidation is damnation - whether that of his detractors or his own#and so far - he's been the only one sacrificed
