Review "Fallen Leaves"
Tumblr media
Last night I went to see "Fallen Leaves" directed by Aki Kaurismäki. It stars Alma Pöysti as Ansa, Martti Suosalo as Raunio, Jussi Vatanen as Holappa,, Alina Tomnikov as Tonja, Janne Hyytiäinen as Huotari and numerous others. Gee, IMDb doesn't list the dog Chaplin in their credits. Ah, TMDB lists Chaplin, the dog, as Alma-koira. I quite enjoyed this film. It is melancholy, with a chance encounter and a sad and happy love story. From IMDb, "In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles - from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog. ". (Hm, don't remember a mistaken address scene) I liked the rather dark and moody settings, the cinematography, the distinct lack of laughing and smiling throughout about 95+% of the film, the mostly quiet and calm acting and reactions to the sad things that happened in these people's lives, the entertaining karaoke bar and the singing and songs presented, the music and the dog Chaplin. This film had a very dry sense of humor where it existed. At one point I thought this really reminds me of the films by another director. Then in the credits I see the name Jim Jarmusch. Ah yes, right. Parts of this film made me think of certain moments in "Strange Than Paradise" by Jarmusch. After the film I heard a conversation between a theater employee and someone attending the film that Jarmusch and Kaurismäki had met and become friends.
I've seen "Le Havre" by Kaurismäki and have four or five more by him that I really should get around to watching. In the New York times review of this film by Manohla Dargis, she writes "Since the early 1980s, he has honed his minimalist visual style and quietly ironic sensibility in more than 20 narrative features that tend to be classed as comedy dramas, tragicomedies or some other hyphenated admixture; the movies are sometimes described as bittersweet, though, for me, their long aftertaste tends to be more sweet than bitter. Yet even these descriptors are too confining." Yes. I've seen many films by Jarmusch but still have a number to watch. I saw this film at the Little Roxie which is a few doors down from the Big Roxie. I hadn't been there before but it was nice but a little small.

Jarno ‘Rotikka’ Erola: You mean the word?
Radek: It’s Hungarian and means ‘order’.
Rotikka: You mean like everything is in the right order?
Radek: No the other order.
Rotikka: You mean, you get what you’ve ordered?
Radek: Work it out, Sherlock.

Catherine started to look for wives among the minor Princesses of the Holy Roman Empire, whence she herself had come. She selected Princess Wilhelmina of Hesse-Darmstadt and invited her to Petersburg. Paul liked her, but just as she converted to Orthodoxy under the name Natalya, he was embroiled in an intrigue, hatched by an ambitious Holsteiner diplomat, Caspar von Saldern, to make him joint Tsar with Catherine. Panin discouraged it, but Catherine was alarmed. She avoided giving him a full separate court.
On 29 September 1773, Paul married Natalya in a blaze of festivities and fireworks.
