ALICE IN BORDERLAND : SEASON 3 THEORY

It's always 'who's the joker??', never 'how's the joker??' What if, in a perfect world, where everyone's read the manga, we asked the real questions regarding season three : What's the joker going to do? Straying from the idea of who the Joker is opens up a lot more possibilities as to what season three could hold for us and what its symbolization might be. So for today, we're taking a step away from all the 'who' theories and thinking about the whys and hows. And that starts with a single panel of the manga all the way in chapter 60.

The Sanzu River. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SANZU RIVER ? : In Japanese mythology, the Sanzu river is a river representing the border between life and death. It is a river with three different paths for three different kinds of souls- a bridge for those who have done good, a deep section filled with poisonous snakes for those who have done bad, and a ford for those in between. The borderlands represents the Sanzu river. MORE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THIS CLAIM : - The Sanzu river is said to be located somewhere on Mount Osore, which might be what the mountain terrain that began to surround Tokyo is meant to represent. Continuing on with the Sanzu river references, at the end of the Sanzu river, the travelers enter Meido, where they will experience a number of trials to determine whether or not they are deserving to go to Tengoku (heaven), or doomed to go to Jigoku (hell). Judging by going off of Alice in Borderland being a sort of big reference to the Sanzu River, continuing on with this, the next step after borderland with the theme in season three being the joker card, could be Meido. So in theory, the next season could be the series of trials that our characters will overcome before they finally die. JOKER CARD SYMBOLISM : - The joker card is likely to represent that the characters in borderland aren't fully out yet, and we don't know if they ever will be. In history, the joker card is described as a wild card that represents UNPREDICTABILITY and CHAOS- a fitting description of the foreseeable events to come in season three ---- While the joker represents the ferryman of the river in the manga that might allude to this theory being incorrect, the mountains that began to surround the city possibly indicates that the sanzu river symbolization has not changed, but the joker's symbolization has. ---- In this case, it might be that the joker is to represent that souls might BELIEVE that they are finally to the afterlife after crossing the river (just like how the characters in borderland seem to have finished their terror), but there's still one last challenge left for them to overcome, meido (in borderland's case, the joker card.) - Joker card is also sometimes compared to the fool in tarot, which also represents unpredictability as well as the start of a new journey. - It also is sometimes believed to symbolize CHANGES IN FORTUNE, once again relating to the belief that the characters have left borderland, when they actually still have one more thing to go. I'm going to refer to this as the RIVER THEORY.

I was thinking maybe the two guys who chose to stay in borderlands will be the jokers because there are two jokers in every deck, but maybe the kid plays a part too because he was the only child in borderland. do yall have any theories?

about Chishiya, since the show watered him down ;p he actually was kind of heartless and never understood the concept of life and wasn't interested in it either. so if you're mad at someone for saying "awful" things he would have do, you're probably the one mischaracterizing him In his backstory (manga-based only), we learn that he was born into a family with no love and affection. his parents never showed interest in him; they only cared about work—actually, that much—that even if they didn't love each other anymore, they pretended to be happy so the hospital where the father worked—his father was the hospital head—wouldn't get into any scandals. chishiya basically grows up in a family with no feelings, and since he never got to know them, he still doesn't know them to this day. he wanted to check if he could feel anything by starting to work in his father's hospital as a student. he wanted to know if he could feel compassion toward any of the patients and if that would help him find an interest in life; guess what, it didn’t help, then he kind of gave up on himself and looking for any sense in life or finding a good in himself

but there was one thing that interested him since he was a child: it was the Mona Lisa painting. we see him looking at it, stating that he couldn't look away and that "everyone wants to be seen for who they are"; it is a reference to his history in various ways. first, the painting, in one of its meanings, is a visual representation of happiness. looking at what he said, it could be interpreted as him referring to his family, who are actually just pretenders and are "painted" happy. the second meaning refers to him, as he always felt different from others and viewed emotional people as stupid. because of that, other people couldn't understand him; he reminded himself of the painting when he tells arisu he just wanted someone to understand him. he said the Mona Lisa, in one theory, has been said to be Da Vinci himself dressed as a woman—which refers to people actually not knowing Da Vinci, just as people do not actually know and understand him.

in Borderland, his first game was 6 of Diamonds - a blackjack. there we could see how intelligent and observant he actually is. he never gambled before and was not only able to pick up the rules through observation but also invented a mathematical card counting method to decide how to bet. other players there couldn’t understand how a young man like him could act so calm and unbothered, but he simply had no concept of living and didn't care if he died or not. from the beginning, he only "helped" others when he saw they might be useful—that's why he helped Karube and gave him information about the beach since he was with Arisu, who he became interested in.

on the beach, he paired with Kuina, but they weren’t friends, as the show depicts; he had from the beginning planned to use her to steal the cards by himself when they were about to steal them together. he needed her to get closer to Arisu—to use him for his plan—he didn't care what was going to happen to them(arisu & usagi). kuina even asked him if he really didn't feel sorry at all, but of course, he doesn’t feel anything. Kuina later in the series even said she hates him just as much as she hates niragi 10 of hearts: after the start of the game, he leaves Kuina behind and is trying to kill Niragi; he says he's pissing him off since Niragi reminds him how awful he also is. both of them don’t care about other lives, killing and betraying them. Chishiya really hated niragi. he knew there was something wrong with him, but he couldn’t change and gave it up already in his backstory. he wants niragi dead so he won’t have to face the thought of how evil he actually is. also, when he learns Arisu is alive, he doesn’t try to solve the game; he knows Arisu will do it and that he doesn’t need to interfere. especially when it’s a heart game, he may be pretty good at them, but he doesn’t really like them since he isn’t good with emotions and never really understood other people's minds.

King of diamonds: there, as usual, Chishiya couldn't care less about his life and gives Kuzuryu the option to kill him. as i said, he never had the concept of life and was only in the borderlands looking for something interesting, like, for example, his beloved Mona Lisa painting. unexpectedly, Kuzuryu decides to sacrifice himself for Chishiya, which actually makes him wonder—how do people decide to sacrifice for others? Why do they do that? He contemplates the concept of empathy. Kuzuryu's sacrifice was like a breaking point for Chishiya because, before, Arisu's will to help others interested him, but what Kuzuryu did for him made him actually think about changing.

Arisu and Niragi: when the shooting started, because of what i wrote above and Arisu's speech before Usagi appears, he decides to take Usagi's bullet. He wants to do something nice in return, something out of character—as he said. he wanted to know how it feels to help others, to do something for someone instead of for himself. he then expressed thoughts about the Mona Lisa, stating he only wanted someone to understand him, and it happened to be Arisu and Niragi. He was glad to meet them and told Arisu his existence was just to show how empty humans can be—“I understand,” he responded. he came to the conclusion that he probably never wanted to learn about others and/or emotions because he was too jealous of them to think of it, viewing them as stupid instead. summarizing all his character: he was selfish, lacking humanity, and disinterested in life. so why, after all, did he decide to go back to the real world and survived the shooting? because of Arisu, Usagi, and Kuzuryu, he finally found a reason to live - to slowly change and try to understand what is humanity - i think that moment - him finding a reason to live - was the most beautiful part of his character. they were his new Mona Lisa, making him interested and causing him to think just like the painting did before; it was what he searched for in the borderland.

squid game and AIB talk

"Ann/Arisu/Chishiya would immediately know that 001 is the frontman!" No, they wouldn't. They could be a bit suspicious but they couldn't know for sure. Nobody knew Mira was the queen of hearts (a citizen) before it was revealed. Chishiya didn't know Kuzuryu was the king of diamonds (a citizen) before he saw him again. From the pov of an unaware Squid Game character, 001 wasn't even suspicious at all, expect for Jungbae towards the end but even he wasn't suspicious, just scared because he saw 001 ki.ll someone in front of him. From the pov of an unaware Alice In Borderland character (specifically the ones at the beach), Mira and Kuzuryu weren't suspicious as far as we know.

They aren't some kind of geniuses with spheres that tell them the future.

"Chishiya would laugh at Squid Games" / "Chishiya would complete all Squid Games with his hands in his pocket" did the people saying these things forget that squid games isn't about being smart? There's teamwork which is a skill Chishiya lacks. There's lights out which is a fight and I doubt Chishiya can fight, especially without any taser or anything that he can make with random material he finds, which he can't find in the Squid Games.

"(insert any character except Yaba and Banda) is the joker!!" These theories sound so strange, like the "Min-su / Dae-ho is vip!" theories.

Arisu: left the borderlands and he couldn't ki.ll people

Usagi: left the borderlands and that's extremely unlikely, I like the "Usagi will betray Arisu" things but I cannot believe them at all because it wouldn't make sense.

Kuina/Ann/Heiya: left the borderlands and I doubt she would do it

Chishiya: left the borderlands, season 1 him kind off could've had the emotional ability but he changed for the better.

Niragi: he has the emotional ability and the skills to ki.ll people, but he left the borderlands

(Any character that's dead): They're de.ad.

Usagi's dad: I can't believe I've seen this more than once, he's d.ead. Some people to prove this theory say "Maybe he actually went to the borderlands" if he did he is already de.ad or would've been shown already.

Edit: I forgot about Aguni

Aguni: he left the borderlands and I'm pretty sure he would hate k.illing innocent people for no reason because he hated when Hatter k.illed people at the beach because he saw them as traitors even if they only hid some cards from him.

I’m going to read the manga so maybe I’ll get an answer, but I have a couple questions about Alice in Borderland after watching the show

• why fireworks? Everyone remembers fireworks, but the trio are shown running into the subway bathroom, knocking, and then the lights cut out so when did the transition actually occur?

• why did some people get transferred together while others were alone?

• could you in theory never start a visa countdown if you never play any games once you arrive?

• is the Borderland for everyone who passes or just after disasters?

Day 7: Personal OW Aus.

OW Aus. Definitely 🤩. I only have like 1-5 Aus -3-". Sooo, summary on each of them ;3;

1 ) AIB X OW

In case some of you don't know AIB; AIB/Alice in Borderland is a live action/anime/manga series that people have to play games for their lives. It's like Squid Game but the only award is Visa (aka, the amount of days that you can live without playing a game.) Each game has a difficulty level and suit based on the card the player is playing.

Heart = Emotional and psychological test.

Spades = Psychical

Diamond = Intelligence and Logic test.

Clubs = Teamwork

In this small au of mine, the group sadly had to go through the games to live on. They survived three games but unfortunately, their moments were short lived when they played a Hearts game. The difficulty level was Nine as they only played the game because Iggy needed more days on his visa. In the game, they were with eight other people and uh it didn't end well. Let's just say that Iggy was the only one who walked out that night along with three other players.

I thought of this crossover AU a while back after rewatching the series that I was planning to make a video based off of but never got the chance to due to a lot of work and stuff. BUT I did draw this cringe ahh sketch angst of it :3

(Did I mention that one of the other players killed Genzou out of greed-)

2 ) Spy! Au

I talked about my thoughts of this personal au of mine, and how I think each character fits into the roles.

The story is mostly about a Loser Rookie agent (Iggy) getting sent out to grab a mysterious package without further information. Unfortunately, it led to Iggy's life being endangered as the package has something that every gang is out to get. How is Genzou involved? Heh.

Uhm. Sooo, due to Genzou being a framed-ex agent turned Mercenary, etc, etc, he was also tasked to get the package by some anonymous user. ;3;

Enough about the lovey doveys!

Orlam and Gidget had made an alliance due to the supplies that both have to offer. Orlam needs the tech as Gidget needs weapons and Intel about certain people.

Now onto Bucks and Hunar. Those two were school sweethearts but since Bucks has become a Hit-woman, Hunar feared the safety of Saydie, which led the two to have a break into their relationship. Obviously, Hunar lets Saydie see Bucks whenever it's safe...but that's rarely.

3 ) Anomaly AU

Honestly, this is like a SPOOKY MONTH 👹 au but mostly after a tragic news about disappearances happening everywhere and theories about a lab accidentally letting loose these creatures that can shape shift into anything or anyone.

One night, due to Iggy hearing noises in his house for two weeks, he had messaged Genzou about it and didn't feel safe. After minutes that flew by and Genzou hadn't answered his message. Fortunately, Iggy would hear Genzou knocking on his front door, calling for him. Or so he thought.

I might try and make a comic strip about this AU in October or maybe a few days from now but other than that, this AU is heavily inspired by Mandela Catalogue, The Winter land, Arcadia and Orlakis (hopefully I wrote that name right 😅).

This AU has been stuck in my head for weeks...🫩

4 ) Cyber AU;

This Cyber au often comes across my mind.

Especially when thinking about Gidgly (imsorry I don't know the ship name for Gidget x Iggy-). We have Gidget, a detective who always does the case alone, especially one case that they kept to themselves after the murder of their lover - Ignatius -.

In this lovely AU, Iggy was a scientist working at a lab organisation called Zeus Corporation (yes, yes, a rich ass name). However due to an 'incident', Iggy had 'died' along with three scientists in it. Gidget driven by grief, would often get out late at night, searching for answers.

Unfortunately, their boss had assigned Gidget to a partner. An android that's a replica of Iggy, sent by an anonymous person. And Yada Yada, still a wip.

5 ) Our Nightmare (OOGA BOOGA)

It's literally just a twisted version of Our Wonderland. Simply, the white rabbit, the deceiver of Children, lures kids in, so that the others can take the children's lives to feed their mother. The end. Yes. Iggy is the White Rabbit in this AU.

Tbh, me and a friend of mine bicker about Iggy being corrupted/evil in this AU. I think that Iggy would be this emotional + psychological manipulative villain, one that uses a child's naivety and innocence to his advantage. Like a wolf in sheep's clothing. But Rabbit skin instead. So. Yeah. .-3-

If you couldn’t tell, I’m a SUCKER for queer/queercoded media and media with social commentary. I believe film and television today hold upmost power in influencing pop culture and politics, which is what makes analysing media so important to me. (Especially with BIG shows)

I’m currently in the middle of my A-level exams (English end-of-school exams) for Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. I take the most interest in Physics, largely influenced by my early obsession with Sci-fi (Star Trek, Dr. Who and – of course – Stranger Things), and I hope to begin my integrated masters in the subject next year.
