Alice Austen Lived Here by Alex Gino
Tumblr media
From the award-winning author of Melissa, a phenomenal novel about queerness past, present, and future.
Sam is very in touch with their own queer identity. They're nonbinary, and their best friend, TJ, is nonbinary as well. Sam's family is very cool with it... as long as Sam remembers that nonbinary kids are also required to clean their rooms, do their homework, and try not to antagonize their teachers too much.
The teacher-respect thing is hard when it comes to Sam’s history class, because their teacher seems to believe that only Dead Straight Cis White Men are responsible for history. When Sam’s home borough of Staten Island opens up a contest for a new statue, Sam finds the perfect non-DSCWM subject: photographer Alice Austen, whose house has been turned into a museum, and who lived with a female partner for decades.
Soon, Sam's project isn't just about winning the contest. It's about discovering a rich queer history that Sam's a part of -- a queer history that no longer needs to be quiet, as long as there are kids like Sam and TJ to stand up for it.

Queer gaze in art and photography of the past
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Konstantin Somov, A Reclining Man, 1936. Somov was gay, and quite openly. Here he painted his lover and muse Boris Snezhkovsky
Paul Cadmus, Jerry, 1931. Cadmus painted Jared French, another artist, while they, as a couple, were travelling around Europe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alice Austen, Gertrude Dancing, 1899. Alice Austen, a pioneering female photographer, met Gertrude Tate in 1897. They lived together, travelling, throwing tea parties, and riding automobile, until Alice's death in 1952
Wilhelm von Gloeden, Two Men Talking, c. 1895. Von Gloeden was famous for his homoerotic photography and made Italy popular among gay men and lesbians. Although this photo is likely just that, a photo, its meaning is clear
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Louise Catherine Breslau, The Toilette, 1898. Breslau lived with Madeleine Zillhardt, fellow artist, for over forty years. She drew her often, like in this tender painting. There's now a street in Paris called Place Louise Catherine Breslau & Madeleine Zillhardt
Andreas Andersen, Hendrik Andersen and John Briggs Potter in Florence, 1894. Andersen depicted his brother Hendrik, a sculptor and the lover of Henry James who caled him his beautiful Henrico. Hendrik met artist John Potter before James, in 1894, through his brother Andreas. The three travelled together in Italy

do you have any book recommendations beyond classic lit + Jane Austen? Love your blog by the way!
Thanks! I read/have read a ton of books. My favourite genre as a child was fantasy, but I read almost everything except true crime*, thrillers, murder mysteries, self-help, and biography. But I do sometimes read those, my favourite thriller is Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney. I'm going to start with children's books because honestly, I find so much imagination in that genre.
Children's/YA Books: Gail Carson Levine, specifically The Princess Tales 1 & 2, and Ella Enchanted, among others Jean Little/Kit Pearson - these authors have the same vibe to me. Willow and Twig is a favourite from the first one, The Guests of War trilogy and Awake and Dreaming from the other. They both write coming of age novels for girls, both Canadian. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I loved the whole trilogy (haven't watched the movie). The story being based around real antique trick photos is my favourite part The Echorium Sequence by Katherine Roberts - a trilogy of books about magical singers with blue hair and their interactions with half-human magical creatures Margaret Peterson Haddix, specifically Running Out of Time, the Shadow Children series, and Double Identity. Margaret Buffie, who writes stories about teenage girls and ghosts. Also Canadian, which I guess isn't that surprising. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. Re-read it last summer and it's as good as I remembered. Roald Dahl, I really loved Matilda as a child, it's been fun to read some of these novels with my kids. Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar - and it's sequels. Amazingly quirky and funny stories about a class of students in a weird school
Fantasy: Mercedes Lackey, specifically the Five Hundred Kingdoms series and The Obsidian universe. I also loved the Elvenbane series, but due to the death of Andre Norton it may never be finished. I would advise caution if sexual assault is triggering for you, the ones I like are mostly free of it but that can come up in her other works. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - obviously. Also loved The Hobbit, have not read further The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin - the book opens with the triggering of an apocalypse. The world contains people who can control earthquakes A Baroque Fable by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - this book is so hilarious but I don't know if anyone has heard about it Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis L. McKiernan - and it's sequels. This is a romance retold fairy tale series
Science Fiction: Michael Crichton - who spans a bunch of genres but I'll put him here. I've read everything he's written and I recommend most of it. State of Fear has not aged well. His books are very fast-paced and Timeline has one of the best enemies to lovers. Orson Scott Card - I am aware, but Ender's Game is a masterpiece. He also has this single novel called Magic Street that is a sequel to A Midsummer Night's Dream. I also loved Memories of Earth but it's been a while since I read it. I, Robot by Issac Asimov - short stories about artificial intelligence and how it might go weird
Graphic novels: Astro City by Kurt Busiek - superhero, but more focused on how living in that world would affect normal people Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - every male on earth dies, except for one, and his monkey Fables by Bill Willlingham - after being attacked by an army of wooden soldiers, fairy tale characters and creatures seek refuge in a non-magical world (ours) Nimona by ND Stevenson - a villain gains a shape-shifting sidekick, but she is not what she seems Scurry by Mac Smith - post-apocalyptic earth, the main characters are all surviving mice. Best artwork I've ever seen in a graphic novel American Vampire by Scott Snyder- vampires have different traits depending on their home country, this is about the new, American species. Asterix and Obelix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo - a small group of powerful Gauls defend themselves against the Romans using a magical potion
Non Fiction: Stephan Pinker, I've read both of his trilogies on language and the brain. Trying to get through his huge book about violence The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks - writen by a neurologist, fascinating book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by Maya Dusenbery - what it says on the tin
Toddler/Young Child Books: The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone - I give you a 100% guarantee that if you read this book aloud, the kids will be fascinated. It is literally always a hit Robert Munsch - most of his books are amazing, but if you don't want to cry, DO NOT read the backstory of Love You Forever. The Paper Bag Princess was one of my favourites as a child. Little Critter - only the older ones, the new ones are religious for some reason. Just for You and I Was So Mad were favourites for my kids. Early lesson in unreliable narrators. Phoebe Gilman - Something From Nothing, the Jillian Jiggs series, The Balloon Tree... so many good ones! Really good illustrations too Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - a book about a pea who hates eating candy. This book is fun to read and my kids loved it (I have the box set) The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak - kids love when adults have to do weird things I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen - perfect opportunity to do a lot of funny voices The Mitten by Jan Brett - a whole bunch of animals squeeze into a mitten. That's the whole thing. It's great. The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland - and the rest of the series. These are fun to read because they rhyme. Jonathan Stutzman - my kids LOVE Tiny T. Rex and the Llama series. We haven't read the others An Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems - we have this entire series, they are a delight. An elephant and pig are very silly friends. Good drawings Dr. Seuss - be careful with him though, his books are quite long and can be hard to read, so I recommend waiting until your kids are a bit older. But The Lorax slaps and my personal favourite as a kid was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
Other: Still Alice by Lisa Genova - or any of her books really. She is a neuroscientist and her books are really interesting explorations of different disorders. Book is better than the movie Warm Bodies by Issac Marion - zombie Romeo and Juliet Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - a novel that is also an intro to philosophy course Calvin and Hobbes - I own all of them, so excited for when my kids can understand them. I also love The Far Side, Zits, and the earlier Dilbert comics The Women in Black by Madeleine St. John - this book is absolutely charming. I saw the Netflix movie and then bought it right away.
*I avoid true crime because I have heard that the genre causes harassment to victim's families
General Note: I am aware that some of these authors are now considered controversial, some for more serious reasons than others. Sometimes flawed people make really good art. I mean, flawed people make all art because nobody on earth is perfect.

Joffron Pride and Prejudice au
part 2
A very much requested one. The plot does not follow the Jane Austen original closely! I just took some of the characteristics of Lizzy and Mr. Darcy. Hope you will like it.
“Your letters, boys.” Rhaenyra entered the room shared by her three omega sons with a stack of letters under her arms, “There is one for Jace, and two for Luke.”
“Thank you, mother.” Jacaerys took his letter from Rhaenyra, but didn’t open it. He continued telling stories to his toddler brothers, Aegon and Viserys. Rhaenyra remarried after Harwin had passed away, so Aegon and Viserys were their half-brothers.
The three omegas doted on the two little boys; Jacaerys would tell stories to the boys, both from a book or simply made up by Jace at the moment. Lucerys would gift them handmade handkerchiefs with intricate embroideries, or mend their clothing if necessary. Joffrey had neither the eloquence nor the skilled hands for needlework, so he would bring back snacks from the street, or take the boys out for an adventure into the woods.
“Thanks, mama.” Lucerys got up to give their mother a loud kiss on the cheek before taking his own letters from her, “Do you want to sit down? I can tell Elinda to make you tea.”
Elinda had been their housemaid as long as the brothers could remember. She was gentle, but very capable. The house couldn’t survive without her.
“Don’t bother. I need to return some of my own letters. I’ll be in the library, boys.” Rhaenyra walked around the room and kissed each of her son’s cheek before leaving the room.
“Who do these letters come from?” Joffrey asked his two brothers after their mother’s footsteps disappeared down the corridor, “Let me guess, Mr. Stark for Jace, and Uncle Aemond for Luke.”
“Who’s Mr. Stark?” Little Aegon asked, lifting his head from Jacaerys’s lap.
“Nobody.” Jacaerys replied before Joffrey could say anything. The eldest Velaryon shot a warning glare at his big-mouth brother.
“Aemond invites us to us to visit his estate.” Lucerys chimed in after browsing his letters, “It’s at the other side of town. We need carriage to go there. I don’t know if mother will agree to this.”
“Do you mean the mansion on Aegon’s Hill?” Joffrey looked outside their window in the direction of the famous estate, “What’s it called? The Red Keep?”
The brothers stayed in one of their stepfather father Daemon’s estate outside of town. It was more of a cottage than a mansion, but it was comfortable and spacious enough to accommodate the whole family. The cottage was located near the Kingswood, giving it an unmatched view of beautiful natural greens. Joffrey loved their family house, but he had to admit that it was located too far from the city that it was hard for stay late in a ball. If they wanted to go into the city, they would have to rent a carriage as well as a rider.
“Yes.” Lucerys replied, “Aemond says here that it will be a ball held in the Keep’s ballroom. His family will all be there, too.”
At hearing Lucerys’s words, Joffrey’s thoughts immediately went to Daeron. Aemond’s family would attend the ball, which meant Daeron would be there too. Joffrey’s last encounter with his youngest uncle was not pleasant, to say the least. Daeron might appear polite and charming, but Joffrey could feel the arrogance underneath. Daeron seemed to think omegas as nothing more than wife materials, unable to live on their own without the protection of alphas. Joffrey hated it. He hated being dismissed, especially not by his handsome uncle. He didn't know how Aemond was treating Lucerys, but he would be furious if Aemond shared Daeron’s view.
“Including Lady Alicent and Lord Otto?” Jacaerys asked.
Lady Alicent was the second wife of their grandfather Viserys, the eldest daughter of Lord Otto, a former clergyman from Old Town. Joffrey never met his step grandmother, not that he could remember, for Rhaenyra had cut off the ties to her family shortly after Joffrey was born. However, he could tell the lady was not an easygoing woman from his brothers’ looks.
“I suppose.” Lucerys shrugged and put down the letter, “I have to ask mother before I send out a reply.”
“Is Uncle Aemond in charge of grandfather’s estates now?” Jacaerys finished his storytelling and sent the boys downstairs for snacks before turning to Lucerys, “How about Uncle Aegon? I thought he’s the heir.”
“Uncle Aegon left for Lys a few years ago. Aemond wouldn't tell me the detail of Uncle Aegon’s departure, but I suspect he’s leaving the continent to avoid lawsuit.” Lucerys carefully folded the two letters sent by Aemond and flattened them on his lap, “Aemond has been taking care of the Red Keep and other estates since grandfather passed away.”
“He’s bloody rich then.” Joffrey commented, finally able to use his vulgar words since the little boys were gone.
“God, Joffrey.” Jacaerys sighed helplessly, “How many times do I have to tell you not to speak like that? You will make mother look bad for failing to educate her omega son properly.”
“Relax, Jace. Nobody talks to me, so nobody will notice my distasteful use of words.” Joffrey waved his hands dismissively, “Besides, if anyone dares to speak ill of mother, I will make them shut up.”
“Aemond is very affluent, yes.” Lucerys spoke, stopping another argument between Jacaerys and Joffrey in time, “10 thousand gold dragons per year.”
“Wicked!” Joffrey blew a whistle, “Is that why you are being friendly with him?”
“Perhaps.” Lucerys smiled, “Aemond is, well, let’s say very interesting to be around with.”
“Luke, if you don’t like Uncle Aemond in that way, better not to get yourself too involved.” Jacaerys warned, always the worrying big brother, “Mother won’t want us marrying solely for money.”
“Of course,” Lucerys agreed, “but who’s to say I don’t like Aemond? I find our uncle quite interesting, especially when he’s trying to flirt with me. You will be shocked about the number of love poems he can quote when he’s trying to compliment my hair.”
Joffrey scrunched his nose. He didn't want to picture a very serious Uncle Aemond reciting love poems to his brother with a straight face. Could you imagine? Like, the eye patch?
“I am just reminding you to put your own feelings first.” Jacaerys said, finally opening his own letter, “Oh, it’s from Cregan.”
“Mr. Stark, you mean?” Joffrey exchanged a knowing smile with Lucerys, “What did our good captain say in the letter? Or is it too private to share?”
Captain Cregan Stark had recently returned from the front line. He had spent the past three years fighting white walkers and wildlings beyond the wall, and made a good name of himself. He was the heir of House Stark, the future owner of the biggest mansion in the North, Winterfell. Despite their ancient origin, the Stark estate did not have much to offer. The North was a barren land, filled with unexplored woods, wild animals, and boring plains. No gardens, no nice little trails to take a walk in, no flowers, etc. The only thing that could be of interest was the snow. It was said that the whole land would be covered in inches-thick snow in winter, transforming the land into a fairytale place. All in all, Cregan Stark was an honorable soldier with a decent income, but he was not a desirable partner if someone was looking for a fortune. Just as Daeron said.
“We don't discuss anything inappropriate in the letter.” Jacaerys threw his thimble at Joffrey, “Actually, he mentioned the ball to be held in the Red Keep, and asked if I would attend.”
“I guess we are going to the ball after all.” Joffrey caught the thimble thrown at him in mid-air with a swift wave of his hand, “Since both of you are well anticipated. Hope you don't mind me tagging along. There had to be someone standing guard for you.”
“Don't say things like that, Joff.” Lucerys spoke, “I am sure you will be very welcomed there too.”
“I am not sure if I will go yet,” Jacaerys frowned, “I don't want to spend too much on carriages.”
“Don't worry.” Joffrey put the thimble down in the basket before getting up from his armchair, “I am sure mother will be more than happy to aid in her sons’ relationships.”
“Where are you going? It’s almost time for tea.”
“To the market. Don't wait for me!” Joffrey was out of the room before Jacaerys could stop him, “I will talk to mother after I get back.”
“Make sure to bring an umbrella with you, Joff!” Jacaerys raised his voice, “It’s about to rain!”
“Will do!” Joffrey shouted back.
It started to drizzle before Joffrey could make it to the market, but the rain was too gentle to use an umbrella, at least in Joffrey’s books. Instead, he took a sharp inhale and lifted his head, letting the rain drops hit his face. The earthy scent of grass and rain lifted Joffrey’s spirit immediately. He always loved nature, more than any luxurious ball.
Joffrey didn’t have a specific appointment. He only left the cottage because he felt somewhat left out by his two brothers, who were obviously in love. Jacaerys definitely had something going on with Cregan, and Joffrey could tell Lucerys was genuinely interested in Uncle Aemond, no matter how he pretended to be otherwise. Joffrey, however, never developed such feelings for anyone. He always tried to find other meaning of life than love.
By the time Joffrey arrived at the market, the train of his dress had already been ruined by dirt. The omega seemed to pay no mind to it, though. Joffrey walked briskly down the street, admiring the nicely decorated shop windows. He had no annual income yet, but sometimes he helped at the local bakery to get some extra coins. He had been saving to buy his mother a new bonnet.
“Hey, Joff!” A boy waved at Joffrey from a tailor shop, “What are you doing here? You are all soaked!”
“Hi, Ben!” Joffrey waved back.
Benjicot Blackwood was an apprentice at the tailor shop, a couple of years younger than Joffrey, but had already presented as an alpha. They met at the bakery where Joffrey worked. Ben would come to the bakery to get some pudding to take home, and Joffrey would make sure to save him a batch from the products.
Benjicot rushed out of the shop and dragged Joffrey in. Before the omega could realize what was happening, Benjicot had already put a dry cotton towel over his head.
“Come, dry yourself. You will get sick walking around like that.”
“I am fine. It’s just a drizzle.” Joffrey said, but he began to dry his hair nonetheless. He knew better not to argue with a worried Ben.
“I’ve heard there is a sweat sickness in the North. Better safe than sorry.” Benjicot said. He had become quite protective of Joffrey ever since the omega presented.
“Who told you that?” Joffrey squeezed his dark curls over the cotton, letting the cloth absorb the moisture, “Since when did you become a North expert?”
“It is true.” Another voice chimed in, “The sweat sickness is no joke. Perhaps you should listen to your friend’s advice, Mr. Joffrey.”
Who would call him Mr. Joffrey? The omega turned his head, only to find the newcomer was none other than Captain Cregan Stark in his army uniform.
“Mr. Stark!” Joffrey’s eyes widened in surprise, “What a lovely coincidence!”
“Good afternoon.” Cregan smiled and bowed his head politely, “I didn’t expect to see you here either. Are you shopping for something?”
Joffrey noticed the handsome captain kept looking behind him.
“No, I am just going out for a walk.” Joffrey replied in an equally polite manner, but he couldn't hide the chuckle in his voice, “It’s a shame my brother can't join me.”
“Oh.” Cregan said lamely, blushing like a boy caught in the middle of a prank, “I see.”
“Can I ask why you are here, Mr. Stark, if you don't find my question too intruding?”
“Cregan’s here to look for some new gloves as a gift.” Benjicot spoke, elbowing the other alpha, “For your lover, isn’t it?”
“Stop it, Ben.” Cregan hissed, but the deep blush on his face already told Joffrey all the omega needed to know.
“That’s very sweet of you, Mr. Stark.” Joffrey smiled, “May I offer some suggestions?”
“You will?” Cregan’s face lit up, “That’s wonderful! I have no idea which to choose.”
Joffrey tried his best to hold back the laugh. He could see why Jacaerys took a liking in the alpha. Cregan’s clumsy and awkwardness was quite cute.
“Do you know who his lover is, Joff?” Benjicot asked, clearly noticing something between the two.
“I have a pretty good idea, but I won't tell you without Mr. Stark’s consent.” Joffrey gave the towel back to his friend, “Don’t worry. I think you will know soon enough.”
Benjicot pouted, but he had no time to ask for more detail as another rush of customers entered the shop.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Joffrey.” Cregan said, offering his arm to Joffrey as per courtesy, “I will be truly lost without you.”
“No problem. I am glad to help.” Joffrey hooked his hand into Cregan’s arm as they walked to the showcase where all the gloves were, “Something moderate will be best. Maybe some subtle embroidery. As for fabric, I would say silk. Jace has small hands, so silk can accentuates his delicate bones the best.”
Cregan nodded to every word Joffrey said. The alpha seemed to be taking note in his heart about Jacaerys’s preferences. It warmed Joffrey’s heart to have someone so devoted to his brother. Jace deserved every bit of love Cregan could offer.
They were going through the third pair of silk gloves when a familiar voice came from behind.
“Nephew?”
Joffrey turned, but the alpha behind was standing too close that he nearly bumped his nose on the board chest. A strong scent of incense invaded Joffrey’s nostrils, so pungent and invasive that the omega almost choked. It didn’t take Joffrey long to realize who the alpha was. Who else could have such breathtakingly handsome face and silver hair except for his uncle Daeron?
“Good day, Uncle.” Joffrey cleared his throat, trying to get rid of the bitter taste in his mouth, “Coming down for a shopping trip?”
It was obvious that Daeron lived in the Targaryen estate, the Red Keep, up Aegon’s Hill, so he had to literally come down, if he needed to shop in the market.
“I can ask you the same question, nephew.” Daeron’s eyes laned on Joffrey’s hand, which still rested in the hook of Cregan’s arm, “What are you doing here?”
“What else can I do in a tailor’s shop?” Joffrey retorted. He didn’t mean to sound rude, but he couldn’t help it, especially with Daeron’s disapproving gaze. Joffrey didn’t need Daeron to judge him.
“What are you doing with my unmated omega nephew, Captain?” Daeron turned to Cregan, “I would say you two are on a shopping date if I didn’t know better.”
“I am just helping Mr. Stark choose a gift.” Joffrey interrupted before Cregan could speak, “I don’t appreciate what you are implying, uncle.”
“You are an unmated omega. You shouldn’t be wandering around by your own, not to mention with another alpha.” Daeron said in a low voice, as if he feared someone might find out about Joffrey’s inappropriate behavior.
“I am not a nun!” Joffrey raised his voice, caring not a bit about unmated omega shit, “I can go wherever I want and talk to whoever I like. It is none of your business.”
“You are my nephew.” Daeron said, clasping his hands together behind his back to stop himself from touching Joffrey, “As your alpha relative, I have the responsibility to protect your honor.”
“You have no right to tell me what to do.” Joffrey hissed, the initial surprise to see Daeron here now turned into fury, “I know you no better than Mr. Stark. No, you know what? I know him better than you. At least Mr. Stark doesn’t treat me like a lesser being.”
“I think I better go.” Cregan whispered, trying to calm the furious omega, “Maybe you should talk with your uncle alone, Mr. Joffrey.”
“No need.” Joffrey pulled his hand back from Cregan’s arm, “I will go, since my presence irritates my uncle so much.”
Joffrey stomped out of the tailor shop, furious and hurt. How could Daeron see him like that? He was not an emotionless doll. He had feelings. He had thoughts. He didn’t want to be stranded in a gilded house, like a pretty decoration. He would gladly stay single if marriage meant giving up his freedom.
The drizzle had become a light shower. Joffrey was so frustrated that he forgot his umbrella at the shop. He had no choice but to run in the shower, and soon he was soaked from head to toe. Joffrey kept running, mud splashing on his shoes and dress, but he couldn’t care less now. He needed to run as far away from Daeron as possible.
“Wait, Joffrey!”
Joffrey heard footsteps following him, as well as Daeron’s voice over the rain. Joffrey didn’t stop, only running faster.
“I am sorry, Joffrey! Can you at least stop and get your umbrella?”
“Fuck off!” Joffrey shouted, hurdling a wooden fence to enter a shortcut back to the cottage, “I don’t need your pity!”
Joffrey thought Daeron would follow him all the way back, but Daeron’s footsteps died down as he ran across a muddy field.
Hypocrite, Joffrey thought, pretending the burn in his eyes was caused only by the rain.

Bi-yearly update on how things are going;
fulfilled the absolutely feral need to visit London for the first time in ten years the other week. And while mentally speaking, this was a straight five days of winning nonstop, physically speaking, I guess we're paying for it with our lives.
It's hilarious. Like it's legitimately hilarious. One of the leading reasons why this had to happen now, immediately is that our coping mechanisms have all burned to nothing, and all that remains, somehow, is TMA/TMP and its unholy sidetracking trainwreck, our recently-burgeoned obsession (special interest) with Regency London theatre history. And right now, before I explain how this one trip has both fixed everything and also killed us, I need to bridge the gap between these two interests and how they've become the entire foundation of our life.
I don't need to recap for anybody the world situation. Everybody knows everything is fucked, and that alone is great cause enough to dive as deep into a rabbit hole as you humanely can. (Speaking of rabbit holes, the Royal Ballet's Alice's Adventures in the Wonderland is spectacular and hilarious at the same time. Worth dying over, I guess.)
But on top of that, our first dog, who we adopted as a wee lil slipper-looking thing 13 years ago, died this past winter/spring. His heart gave out basically the day after we'd picked up Joseph Grimaldi's memoirs for, uh, some form of research/intrigue, handed down to us from the TMA lore. This is where the horrible, terrible, all-consuming spiral began. Turns out, Joe was a great guy. Like legitimately just a good person. And you know who really needed a good, solid guy to lean on at that time? We did.
So our dog, whom we've shared our best but mostly the worst with for the entirety of our adulthood, including the entirety of what we consciously can recognise as our lived experience, died. And what we were left with was Joseph Grimaldi. For straight up the rest of this year, we've done nothing but read about Grimaldi, London theatre, gotten way too into ballet and opera, and become such an unrelenting history buff that our mother - the woman who has been dragging us all over Europe to look at ancient ruins and cultivate an appreciation for all things past and cultural since we were 12 years old - has began to audibly groan and tell us to change the subject when we get into talking history.
(She also, somehow, confused our interest with Regency theatre, from the perspective of a literal bastard-son-of-an-immigrant, born-in-a-slum-to-a-teen-mum Clown lingering on the precipice of financial ruin like a solid 60% of his entire life, with becoming a royalist. Nah mate the aristocracy can go suck a lemon for all I care I'm not interested in rich people. Can't even get into the usual Regency gateway drug of Jane Austen for the amount of rich people in the stories. Anyway, she was absolutely devastated when she tried to fire back about our rant over the Kennedy lobotomy case by firing at the British royalty, and like... SHALL WE GET INTO THAT CAN OF WORMS NEXT? SHALL WE?)
SO ANYWAY our coping mechanisms went from absolutely fuck all to theatre! Theatre everywhere! Also London, because why not make an already expensive coping mechanism even more expensive by adding travel into it! We've probably spent more than our yearly loose income so far on theatre, theatre, ballet, travel, and the truckload of related stuff like.... a home library's worth of books?
And if this doesn't sound unhinged enough yet, that's fine, because it isn't. It's fairly normal to have hobbies and god knows we need hobbies and interests as a society right now. Where it gets actually funny is when I/we/someone here managed to tire our mum out enough to get her to agree to the London trip. Being disabled, it's hard for us to take initiative, it's hard for us to feel like we're capable of making things like that happen - travel is a lot of planning for a brain that dries out like a raisin when exposed to the concept of cleaning the house, or reading a regular ass timetable.
So. This fun thing that's going to happen. We get so stressed and nervous about it a week in advance that we first stop eating, and then sleeping. Trying to get through the mandatory prep of setting the house up for the catsitter, packing - which we did the night of travel - while also being wildly out of our minds, and doing things like starting a whole new crafting hobby by buying a printer and sitting down to make 20 000 custom pendants while figuring from scratch how to get all of the bits and pieces to actually work together without the ink blurring or getting bubbles in the glue and whatnot, with an average of two to three hours of sleep a night, in several bits and pieces.
Enter travel day - we haven't eaten more than a couple slices of white bread with butter for three days, haven't slept, and the airport hotel feels like heaven. Sleep a solid five hours that night, then eat a breakfast of things such as egg and egg and egg + some smoked turkey, which is all nutritious, and probably saved our life, for the next two weeks before this inevitable destruction that has followed, but not yet.
Travel takes, what, 6 hours, plus airport wait time? 3 hours flying, can't sleep, for the first time in our life we actually manage to get motion sick from the plane, because it's just flying way too smoothly. Way longer than anticipated in a coach, because our route, bought as a 1 hour trip, is served by National Express and is actually 2,5 hours.
Tis all fine! We are fed, we have slept an unprecedented amount! Arriving in London, we decide to walk from Victoria Station to King's Cross, via the route of mandatory Buckingham Palace to Covent Garden (where the fuck is the entrance to the Royal Opera House?) to Russell Square to there. It's fantastic and the body's natural opioids have kicked in; 17 000 steps later, carrying an 8-kilo backpack, we're at the hotel.
Going to bed pretty much immediately, we get another non-solid three hours of sleep. Our mum has sleep apnea and doesn't travel with her CPAP, so it's a lot of half-consciously listening to her choking and having the wildest mixing-up of reality with dream state going on. Then she gets a panic attack, because we're locked in a basement room, and she's claustrophobic. Two hours of drinking decaf on the beds and trying to talk that one out, she ultimately calms down enough to resume sleep after setting up a room swap for the day after.
I cannot remember the day after. I do remember being so fucking nauseous we could only barely down half a salad and some bread. I don't know what on earth we did on this day. I know we walked 14 000 steps, because that's in my Samsung Health calendar. Aside from that, I ???? do not know. I do not know. Realistically, this has to be the day we dragged our mum to visit Grimaldi's grave and then got lost on the way to the British Museum. We tripped on a cable laid out across the street at some point, and our mum took a nose dive on the pavement thanks to that, and probably broke her arm, which has made her cranky for the past two weeks. But at this point, like holy shit were the chickens coming home to roost on the whole "haven't eaten have never slept" business.
I cannot remember this day, aside from being sleepdebt-drunk out of my mind in the British Museum, and having nerves I've never experienced outside of conventions about visiting a guy's grave. The Grimaldi Park is, though, a really peaceful place, so at least there was that.
Next day, and here is I think where our fate is sealed, is the ballet at the Opera House. Feeling great on the day, we've slept an unknown amount of time and woke up at 1am, then managed another two hours around 10am after going to shop for food and before walking back to Covent Garden for the show. A fatal error is made; I drink a chocolate milk that has not been refrigerated. I do not know what an enormous, horrible mistake this has been before we're in Covent Garden and the food poisoning hits.
Dear. Fucking. God.
We probably had plans for the three hours we ended up spending touring local bathrooms, but I wouldn't know. All we experienced in that time was the same sleepdebt-drunken stupour mixed with existential panic and, well, food poisoning. Add in that we're severely emetophobic, and there was an actual, very real debate here whether it was worth it to just go cry ourselves to sleep at the hotel instead of trying to face the music and survive the ballet that we'd come there for to begin with. Like, in any other scenario, hotel it would have been. But this fucking ballet cost us over 100 euros on its own, not to mention the flights, the hotel, the travel in general, and the sheer fucking suffering we'd been through to get there. Besides, a food poisoning you get from your own hubris is not contagious, so this was an isolated us-issue, at least until we'd hurl on somebody.
Half an hour of sitting in the corridor outside the auditorium doing breathing exercises later, we're like... solidly able to exist again. Until we actually enter the auditorium, and our seats are ceiling-high, and there's a sheer drop down to the pit that has no railings whatsoever.
I mentioned the emetophobia, but we also do not deal with heights. So it's another, oh shit I am going to fucking throw up holy god oh my sweet jesus my good time pal my rotten soldier. Closing our eyes, trying to stabilise, did not throw up, managed to get to the seat.
And because at least half of this situation is amplified into ridiculous degrees by the panic, we know it'll be so much better once the lights are out and the ballet's actually on. We've been there SO many times before - we stress with our stomach to the point where, honestly, if it wasn't for the next two days, we would have chalked the whole experience not to a food poisoning, but just our IBS gut. And lo and behold, the lights are out and the ballet's on, and our nervous system finds this so pleasant that for the next hour, we're just....... watching with one eye open at a time because we are actually physically inevitably unstoppably falling asleep in the wake of the adrenaline shakes stopping.
It's fucking ridiculous. It's so fucking ridiculous.
One break later, we actually manage to stay awake properly, and enjoy the show. Another break later, the last bit of the show is stellar, nothing to complain about. We're feeling perky and excited again by the time it's over, and have a decent time returning to the hotel after the show, though we take the Tube, because.......... no thanks to another walk back at 11:30pm.
At the hotel, we continue to experience food poisoning. And oh boy how. Oh boy how! The night is spent shaking violently and then drenched with sweat back to back with what I assume are flash-fevers. I can't tell. We are not coherent. Waking up in the morning to dehydration so bad our pulse is like 140, and figure, hey, instead of going to Drury Lane for a tour and then on one last tour of the city with all the places you wanted to see, guess what we're doing today? Waiting in a hospital to get assessed for sepsis or someshit.
Nope. Our mum gives us some magic pills and two hours later, we're able to move again. Spend the day doing exactly and precisely everything we planned and wanted to do, we're out the whole day, I can't remember how much we walked but it's another decent 14-15k steps or so. Dinner consists of a sandwich and a tiny bag of crisps to return at least a hint of minerals and nutrients into the body. If anybody's keeping track, it's been like two weeks not eating a single actual meal at this point. And as a fun throwback to the ballet? It had a lot of kids in the audience, and every single one of the kids was recovering from a cold with a cough. This will be relevant later.
Next morning, getting in on our train to the airport to fly out. This goes great. At Gatwick airport, we determine that even drinking one mouthful of a protein shake makes us so nauseous we become such a bitch of a person that it's just better if we don't, and focus on getting home. Our mum continues feeding us magic pills, and over the flight, we actually manage to drink the rest of the drink.
In Helsinki, we grab two more bottles of protein shake, since this seems to be a safe food, but have very firmly decided against going to our planned Halloween party, and instead head home to rest.
What a decision. A decision for a lifetime, in retrospect. It's Friday.
On Saturday, we eat like kings. I can't remember what that meant exactly but it involved calories and nutrients. On Sunday, we continue to flourish, except that we're developing this dry cough with an itch like, real deep in the chest/lungs.
Oh boy! Oh boy, oh boy.
On Monday, we have a sore throat and a fever of 37,6 degrees Celsius.
On Tuesday, we have a sore throat and a hacking, wheezy cough and a fever of 38,6 degrees Celsius.
It is now Tuesday again. I have given up all hope of ever recovering from this fucking bronchitis. It is what you get when you do ALL OF THAT, WITHOUT EATING OR SLEEPING, IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, LIKE A FUCKING NOODLE-BRAINED MORON. If gods are with me tonight I will brave the outside again and go get a COVID test just to see how worried I need to be, but I assume this is "just" the worst bronchitis ever, because it matches the symptoms of bronchitis to the T. Google tells me, helpfully, it can take up to three weeks to recover from a bronchitis - more if you picked it up "abroads", but I think London doesn't count as "abroads" for the purposes it's selling, or maybe it does, but I'm not going to a hospital for this even if it's malaria so fuck off with that.
It has been eight days. Eight days with a wheezing cough and feeling like my brain is made of infection juice. The US elections are a fucking mirage, a horrible nightmare entered into my feverish subconsciousness. It has been 12 days since we got back from England and I feel like it's been maybe a day or two, because the rest of the fucking time, we've been sick as dying dogs and oh dear god what the fuck what the hell.
LESSON FOR THE KIDS IN THE BACK: DON'T GO TO A FUCKING BALLET IF YOU HAVE AN INFECTIOUS DISEASE. IDIOTS WHO HAVEN'T SLEPT OR EATEN FOR A WEEK ARE IN THE AUDIENCE WITH YOU. AT LEAST WEAR A MASK OR SOMESHIT HOLY CHRIST.
Was it worth it? Yes. 100000000000/10 would do it again, literally applied for a job for the first time in our life to be able to do it again before the world ends, hopefully without the food poisoning this time though.
But like. In general. At this point. I'm not sure we'll survive long enough to find out whether we get the job or not, much less to do the job, get paid, and fly out again.
This is the most miserable illness we've ever had and we've had COVID before. It's the fucking wheezing. You don't ever think about your lung pipes before they're swollen to the size of shitty clogged straws. It is awful. Everything is awful. I fucking hate tea and there's no more hot chocolate and we're out of milk so no coffee either. I despise the taste of honey. Full offense to everybody who isn't sick and can choose when and what they're drinking, everything is shit and I hate it.
PS. Oh yeah and a shout-out to our boy Grim-All-Day, who had this firm belief that nothing good ever happens without it being followed by something that is either just as bad or worse. It's true. If we'd never gone to London, Harris would have probably won the election, and also we wouldn't be dying of fucking consumption or whatever right now either.

So there are a lot of ASMR videos of people reading the first chapter of a book but there are far fewer where people then proceed to read the entire book and as someone fond of finishing books, these appeal to me a lot more. I've made a list of Youtube playlists which read books in full, here they are below the cut. Most are public domain (as they should be) but some unfortunately are not. Titles are listed alphabetically. Please let me know if I'm missing any books here, I'd love to grow the list!

Do you have any recs for books that are quite easy to read like, simple but not in a childish way? sorry if this is super criptic lol idk how to do words very well (obviosly)
sorry i haven’t seen this before, i really don’t check my asks often 😭
a kind of spark by ellie mcnicoll is quite easy to understand and pretty short. it’s about an autistic girl who finds out about the witches in her area and tries to get them a memorial in her town (you might have watched the show)
another cute + short book is alice austen lived here by alex gino, also just a very cute queer book about two school students who find out about a lesbian who lived in their town in new york called alice austen and decides to research her for a school project.
i recommend melissa/george by the same author as well, which is about a young trans girl who really wants to play charlotte in a school production of charlottes web and has to prove she can as she is seem as a boy.
will grayson, will grayson by john green and david levianthan is another sweet queer book about two boys called will grayson who meet unexpectedly when one of the will grayson gets stood up on a date.
i am aware most of these are queer, i just love queer books lmao. i hope this is a god answer for you!
