Buchan the Trend
THE 39 STEPS
New Vic Theatre, Tuesday 19th March, 2019
I have seen several productions of Patrick Barlow’s rip-roaring adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock film version of John Buchan’s classic adventure novel, but I approach the New Vic’s crack at it with relish, knowing I am in safe hands with director Theresa Heskins and a cast which includes Michael Hugo.
Being in-the-round, the production…

USS Meredith, DD-434, Gleaves-class
Near San Cristobal Island in the Solomons, October 15, 1942, she was hit by 14 bombs and seven torpedoes from planes of Zuikaku, and brought down three of her attackers.
To honor the Meredith DD-434, DD-726 (sunk off Normandy by mine 9 June 1944) and DD-890 were named in her honor. Also, seven ships were commissioned with names to honor her valiant crew. No other ship in history has had more ships named for her crew:
USS Harry E. Hubbard (DD 748) — Commanding Officer.
USS Edgar Chase (DE 16) — Executive Officer.
USS Atherton (DE 169) — Lt (jg) John Atherton, Communications Officer.
USS Cockrill (DE 398) — Lt. Dan Cockrill, First Lieutenant.
USS Naifeh (DE 352) — Lt (jg) Alfred Naifeh, Supply Officer.
USS Odum (DE 670) — Fireman Joseph Odum, who refused to leave his 20mm gun and went down with the Meredith.
USS Durik (DE 666) — Apprentice Seaman Joseph Durik, who refused medical attention so shipmates would live on.

you thought I was kidding about making up fictional non-fiction (mostly) books, didn’t you. you fools. you naive fools.
Memoirs Roy Mustang. Central City Press, 1953 Volume 1: War Volume 2: Peace
Dogs of War: The Complete History of the State Alchemy Program A.M. Gallipoli. Sanderson Press, 1975
Dearest, Darling Gracia Bertholdt Strutley, with a forward by MP Elicia Hughes. Central City Press, 1981
“Ms. Hughes’ release of her parents letters to the library archives was truly a boon to historians everywhere, and those interested in the Ishvalan Revolt in particular. The on-the-ground detail they add to our knowledge of the conflict, from the pen of a homesick, lovesick, and heartsick soldier, is incredible, and Strutley expands on it well.” - Carson Armitage, Chief of History, Central City Library Administration
“…Strutley’s decision to keep the letters centerpiece, and fill in the historical context around them, was genius…a beautiful contrast.” - Hana Qumari, author of Fire and Blood: The Ishvalan Extermination
“It’s good to see the old man get some recognition in his own right, not just the ‘first casualty of…whatever’….such a sap, though.” - Edward Elric, Former State Alchemist, Former Professor of Alchemy at Curtis University
Lives of Lust #14: Fascination at the Fort Rosemary Traylor, Lovelorn Books, 1982
The year is 1884 and the devastatingly beautiful and beautifully devastating homunculus Lust has a new mission from her ever-plotting Father: seduce the grizzled, veteran commander of Fort Andover on the eastern border, and either turn him to their side or find someone suitable to replace him and then kill him.
That’s no problem - Lust doesn’t mind a few battle scars. But the commander’s upright lieutenant might be a problem, with his charming smile and too-observant eyes. And those muscles…
Fortunately, Lust knows the way to a man’s heart, or close enough to stop him thinking straight. It’s just between the fifth and sixth ribs…
The Flame Alchemist’s Lieutenant Daughter Tori Whittaker. Keryton Publishing, 1995
Behind every great man, they say, there is a great woman. For Roy Mustang, even the less engaged historian knows that that woman was Captain* Riza Hawkeye: soldier, bodyguard, and, as one contemporary famously put it, “the only reason [Mustang] doesn’t set his own feet on fire, most days.”
Central a figure though she was to the administrative shifts of the early 20th century, much of Hawkeye’s personal life remains a mystery. From speeches, letters, recorded conversations and his own memoirs, we know what drove Mustang’s participation in the 1915 Alchemists’ Revolution, and his later, passionate work on the Ishvalan Reconstruction and demilitarization of Amestris.
But what of the woman standing one step behind? What drove Riza Hawkeye…and why has history forgotten it?
The Missing Winter: Ling Yao in Amestris Lucy Hong. Curtis University Press, 1999
On September 20th, 1914, the Emerald Emperor of Xing gathered his 50 living children and issued what is perhaps his most famous, and certainly his most seemingly paradoxical edict: whichever of them brought him the secret to immortality would succeed him on the throne.
Two nights later, Ling Yao, twelfth imperial son and prince of the Yao clan, left the capital city under cover of darkness. He took with him only two guards. His destination was the ruins of Xerxes, and then Amestris.
He returned on April 30th, 1915. Four months later, he ascended the imperial throne. In the meantime, Amestris had underwent what came to be known as the Alchemists’ Revolution.
Aside from a few notes from significant personages of the time, history has not known where Ling Yao was during that time, or what he was doing…until now. Lucy Hong, Professor of History at Curtis University, has searched the historical record more deeply than any other. Here, you will find coded correspondence, hotel receipts, and journal entries from citizens across two countries. They spin a story of alchemy and intrigue, loyalty and leadership, and uncover the long-hidden origins of the man who would one day be known as the Dawn Emperor.
Lie Down with Dogs: How Charles Grumman Usurped the State Alchemists’ Attempted Coup and Why Everything You’ve Been Taught About It Is a Lie Alfred E. Kenkel. Atherton Press, 2001
“[C]ontroversial!” - Horus Books Review
“A fascinating read…sure to blow your mind” - Hammond P. Lingburgh, author of The Death of Xerxes
“[C]omplete and utter fabrication” - Priya Rocksdaughter, Chief Curator of the Amestrian Museum of Military History
Through Generations: The History of Amestris as Seen Through the Eyes of the Armstrong Family Eileen A. Armstrong. Sanderson Publishing Group, 2012
“…a fantastic read!…Armstong is a dedicated and energetic storyteller” - Henrietta Heineken, author of #1 bestselling Anthony Lance series
“Certainly a very unique angle of insight…terrifyingly well-researched” - New Central Times
“…a strong voice for the new generation…” - Oliver Erskin-Armstrong, author of Strength in Numbers: The Leadership of Roy Mustang
“General Olivier Mira Armstrong: The Iron Wall of Briggs” rejectedprincesses.com. 2014
“Cry, ‘Havoc!’” Diane Rockbell, Theater Reviewer, New Central Times. November 20, 2016
Here’s the thing about Grand Ave’s newest show: if you aren’t charmed the moment Anton Amari steps into the spotlight, with his cocksure grin and sleeveless, 1910s country shirt, and that signature cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth…well, you still have a chance, because in another moment, he takes out the cigarette and starts singing, and you can be charmed all over again.
Penned by Amari himself, Havoc! runs two hours and 12 minutes. It follows Jean Havoc in his rise from enlisted man to Lieutenant under then-Colonel Mustang to Administrator of the East and one of the most popular politicians of the 20th century…and his marriage to the girl of his dreams.
The take on history is lighthearted and irreverent, and willing to sacrifice accuracy for drama. Not to spoil anything, but a Philosopher’s Stone? Probably more involved in Havoc than in the real, historical regaining of his ability to walk.
Roland Chang’s parformance as Dr. Tim Marcoh more than makes up for the discrepancy. The rest of the cast includes…
*The author of this post assumes that she got promoted EVENTUALLY, though never higher than Captain. Would have had to get a different posting otherwise, probably. History remembers the highest title.

“A Church Warden To Assizes For Trial,” Toronto Star. March 30, 1917. Page 3. ---- James H. A. Hurd Accused of Theft of $1,409 of Congregation’s Money --- POLICE COURT CASES --- Tailor and Physician Differ, and the Doctor Has to Pay the Expenses ---- Charged in the Police Court to-day with stealing trust funds to the amount of $1,409 from the Church of St. John the Baptist, James H. A. Hurd, a former warden of the church, was committed for trial. J. H. Atherton, one of the present wardens, stated that the thefts had extended over a period from March to December, 1916.
Thomas Ashley, a deserter from the 170th Battalion since last August, and remanded in Police Court last Wednesday for medical examination, was found to have no worse ailment than stomach trouble. Fifteen days’ fresh-air treatment at Richmond Hill was the cure prescribed.
Awkward indeed was the predicament of Wm. McKee, a young man from Orillia. Some one walked away with his cloths overnight in a York street rooming-house, and when morning dawned he had only his nightshirt to cover his nakedness. For several days afterwards he labored under the disadvantage of having to share the clothing of another man; they sort of divided up on it, one man working while the other slept, and vice versa. William accused Albert Goldman of being the cause of all his trouble, and hasn’t succeeded yet in proving his case. Meanwhile the old suit has been recovered and William is once more a full-dress gentleman.
Another remand was made in the case of George Mack and Joseph Cook, the two men recently brought from Ottawa charged with wounding Tony Stratas, a Greek, on Toronto. Alfred Body, a boy, who was also under suspicion in the case, was dismissed, and afterwards gave evidence valuable to the Crown. Mack pleaded guilty, claiming that he had only acted in self-defence.
Refused to Enlist Young Horace Ball was the black sheep in a flock of seven. Work was an abhorrence to him. Daily until noon he lay abed. Ten until midnight his resorts were pool-rooms and loafing places. In one of these the police found him and arrested him last night.
‘I can do nothing with him’ acknowledged the father, a returned soldier, to Square Ellis to-day. He suggested military life as a cure for his son’s irregularities.
‘Will you enlist?’ demanded the squire. ‘No,’ snapped the young culprit.
‘Then,’ said his Worship, ‘you will pay $10 and costs or go to the Industrial Farm for 90 days.’
Wm. Adams, who was out on remand, had actually been working. ‘He split a little wood last Wednesday,’ said his counsel, Thomas O’Connor, and by way of proof he produced a piece of the said wood.
‘Remanded until called on,’ replied the court.
Thomas Kelley drank essence of ginger. ‘I couldn’t get whiskey,’ he acknowledged frankly, thereby attaining to the honor of being the first man to make that acknowledgement in Toronto Police Court since Sept. 16. The confession may have been good for his soul, but it injured his finances to the extent of $10 and costs or 30 days.
Doctor’s Trouble With Tailor Twenty-one dollars and costs or 30 days was the penalty paid by W. E. Ray in the Police Court today on a charge of aggravated assault on Albert E. Goldhammer. Whether the injury to Goldhammer’s face was caused by a blow from the doctor’s fist or was the result of a collision with some hard substance following a push was not inquired into very closely.
‘If he pushed him hard enough to cause that injury he must have pushed him pretty hard, and so it doesn’t make much difference whether it was a blow or a push,’ said Magistrate Denison.
The trouble arose from a misunderstanding about a suit delivered C.O.D. for Mrs. Ray. Goldhamer said Mrs. Ray refused to see him and he couldn’t get either suit or money. While he waited at the house the doctor himself came home, having been sent for. ‘He ordered me off the veranda,’ said the witness; then he kicked me down the steps, hit me over the eye, and nocked me down on the lawn, and afterwards he phoned to Parkdale Police Station and said there was a man creating a disturbance on his premises.’
The doctor’s story was that payment for the suit was refused only because a remnant of the cloth was not returned with it, and Goldhamer, while waiting for payment, had insulted Mrs. Ray. ‘The washwoman told me that he said my wife was lying,’ said the doctor. ‘I said to him: ‘IT’s time for you to get off or you will gte hurt.’ He said to me: ‘I will stay here tlll morning unless I get my money.’ ‘Will you?’ I said, and gave him a push which caused him to strike his head against something.’ A $7 repair bill against Goldhamer will be paid by the doctor, additional to the fine. The suit itself has already been paid for.
Expensive Buttermilk James Galt, with liquor in his possession, stopped off in a standard hotel ‘just long enough to get a drink of buttermilk.’ It was long enough, also, to cost him a $200 fine or 90 days.

The Libraries of Famous Men: Ernest Shackleton
Welcome back to our series on the libraries of famous men.
Part of explorer Ernest Shackleton’s genius for leadership, was how keenly he understood the way in which idleness can destroy men’s morale. Thus when his ship, the Endurance, became stuck in pack ice en route to a planned Antarctic expedition, he didn’t let his men simply sit on their hands. Instead, he charged them with daily maintenance tasks, organized games of football, hockey, and soccer on the ice outside the ship, and encouraged the keeping of daily diaries. As a help in biding the time, Shackleton also lent members of the crew books from his personal library, the exact contents of which were unknown, until recently.
Hurley took this photograph of Shackleton’s cabin in March 1915, two months after the Endurance became trapped in ice.
Two years ago, when pictures taken by the expedition’s photographer, Frank Hurley, were digitized and restored by the Royal Geographical Society, it became possible for the first time to clearly make out the titles of the books Shackleton kept in his shipboard cabin. We now know his field library contained quite a mix of genres, including a set of encyclopedias, popular and classic novels, collections of poetry and quotations, manuals of grammar, several dictionaries, and accounts of other polar expeditions.
Unfortunately, most of these volumes never returned from the waters around Antarctica. When after an almost 10-month state of suspension the ice surrounding the Endurance began to shift and twist, splintering its hull, the crew was forced to abandon ship. Shackleton’s original plan was to march with lifeboats and supplies across the ice, in order to launch out to open water. Given that the trek would be arduous, he ordered his men to travel light: each member of the team was allowed just the clothes on his back, plus two pairs of mittens, six pairs of socks, two pairs of boots, and a sleeping bag. Beyond these basic provisions, each man could only bring a maximum of two pounds of personal possessions.
While most of Shackleton’s library could not be brought along, he did encourage his men to take one of his books if it fell under their weight allowance.
Shackleton himself tore out the flyleaf of his Bible, upon which Queen Alexandra had inscribed a prayer for his safety, as well as the pages for Psalm 23 and Job 38:29-30 (“Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.”), before laying the rest of the book down on the ice.
Fortunately, he took one more piece of inspiring literature with him before beginning a harrowing journey to safety that would last for another 10 months and nearly 1,000 miles, and take him through freezing 80-foot waves, beneath soaking squalls of rain and snow, and over steep glaciers, jagged mountain peaks, and impassable cliffs — a piece you can see hanging on the left wall of his cabin and which couldn’t be more apropos: the poem “If,” by Rudyard Kipling.
Ernest Shackleton’s Expedition Library
The contents of Ernest Shackleton’s library aboard the Endurance, assessed through an examination of the photograph above of his cabin, was first reported by the BBC:
Encyclopedia Britannica
Seven Short Plays by Lady Gregory
