Austria to propose ban on violent Israeli settlers

Austrian authorities are considering imposing a travel ban on violent Israeli settlers, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The decision follows the lead of France, Germany and the United States, which are discussing measures to address security concerns.

Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said Austria prefers a single regulation for the entire EU, calling the aggressive behaviour of these settlers “totally unacceptable and irresponsible”.

The ongoing discussions in the EU that those involved in acts of violence against Palestinians will be banned from entering the Schengen zone is a gesture of solidarity with the victims and also sends a message that the EU does not approve of such actions, Vindobona reported.

Die Republik Österreich bekundet ihre Unterstützung zu Gunsten von dem Autonomieplan als einem „sehr ernsthaften und glaubwürdigen“ Beitrag zur Beilegung der Sahara-Frage

Vereinte Nationen (New York)–Die Republik Österreich bekundete  am Freitag, dem 27. September 2024 in New York ihre Unterstützung zu Gunsten von dem vonseiten des Königreichs Marokko unterbreiteten Autonomieplan, ihn als „einen sehr ernsthaften und glaubwürdigen“ Beitrag zum Erzielen einer definitiven Lösung des aus dem Boden gestampften Regionalkonflikts rund um die marokkanische Sahara benennend.

Die in 2007 vonseiten des Königreichs Marokko unterbreitete  Autonomieinitiative sei ein „sehr ernsthafter und glaubwürdiger Plan und stelle einen wichtigen Beitrag dar“, zwecks dessen den vonseiten der Vereinten Nationen geführten Prozess zwecks einer definitiven Lösung der Sahara-Frage nach sich führen zu dürfen, sagte der österreichische Außenminister, Herr Alexander SCHALLENBERG, den Reportern gegenüber.

Der Chef der österreichischen Diplomatie, der sich im Anschluss an dessen Begegnung mit dem Minister für auswärtige Angelegenheiten, für afrikanische Zusammenarbeit und für die im Ausland lebenden Marokkaner, Herrn Nasser BOURITA, am Rande der 79. Tagung der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen äußerte, begrüßte darüber hinaus die „ausgezeichneten“ Beziehungen zwischen unseren  beiden Staaten.

„Wir haben eine lange diplomatische Geschichte sehr fruchtbarer Beziehungen zwischen der Republik Österreich und dem Königreich Marokko hinter uns“, die ein breites Spektrum an Bereichen abdeckt, im vorliegenden Falle im wirtschaftlichen und im politischen Bereich.

In diesem Zusammenhang hegte Herr SCHALLENBERG den Wunsch seines Landes, diese Beziehungen weiterhin vertiefen zu haben.

Herr SCHALLENBERG würdigte zum Schluss die Unterzeichnung eines bilateralen Abkommens über die Überstellung verurteilter Personen anlässlich dieser Begegnung, fortfahrend, dass dieser Mechanismus „die Partnerschaft und die Freundschaft widerspiegele, die unsere beiden Staaten mit einander verbinden“.

Eight EU member states call for reset of Syria policy

Eight countries urged the EU to “review and assess” its approach to Syria ahead of a broader discussion of the situation in the Middle East between EU foreign ministers, according to Euractiv.

The foreign ministers of Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, and Slovenia wrote a letter to EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell.

Our goal is a more active, outcome-driven, and operational Syria policy. This would allow us to increase our political leverage [and] the effectiveness of our humanitarian assistance.

Thirteen years after the Syrian conflict began, President Bashar al-Assad still holds power over many parts of the country. However, the EU imposed several sanctions against the country, severing official ties with Damascus.

In the letter, the ministers suggested ten areas that should be discussed “openly and without prejudice.” They also proposed the creation of an EU-Syria envoy post, tasked with re-engaging the Syrian ambassador in Brussels and liaising with both Syrian and regional players. Austria’s Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg stated:

After 13 years of war, we have to admit that our Syria policy has not aged well. Bitter as it is, with the help of Iran and Russia, the Assad regime remains firmly in the saddle, the Syrian opposition is fragmented or in exile altogether – the European Union cannot turn a blind eye to this reality any longer.

However, despite the pressure, EU officials stated that it was unlikely the bloc would begin to ease pressure on Syria over large-scale human rights abuses and war crimes.

According to him, freezing the conflict will only give Russia a respite, which it uses to replenish its forces and prepare for a new attack. “’Just’ really means in this cliché is the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. ‘Lasting’ means that Russia will not be able to stage another attack on Ukraine and the rest of Europe. I thank you for realizing the need for such a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. We count on the power of Austrian diplomacy and Austria’s authoritative political voice to persuade other countries to take a principled stance,” the minister stressed. Kuleba added that Ukraine counts on Austria's political support for the decision to open negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU by the end of 2023 and expects that the Austrian side will subsequently help Ukraine in the process of these negotiations.
