Season 1 Timeline | Misc Timeline Notes

Some facts:

For time of year we know s3 takes place in the winter, based on dialogue from Blunt and Smithers

The trees in the background during establishing shots are just as unreliable as in s2 but during actor shots they're a mix of green and barren (most notably the cherry tree in front of the Rider house), implying late winter, probably February.

I don't know anything about the British school system, but Tom mentions having taken his GCSEs in ep1 so they're presumably on holiday from whatever comes after that (sixth form? A levels? it's Maltese to me).

Now we look at the elephant in the room. John Rider:

There are two different timestamps on the recording of the bridge exchange. 06/01/2005 and 2005-05-21. Not sure what the discrepancy means but since the latter has to be May we can assume that the former is formatted for June (as opposed to January). Also, Alex wasn't born yet in January 2005.

Alex's birthday is 13 Feb, 2005 (according to a prop from s2ep8)

Julia says that Alex was six months old, but based on the time stamp he was closer to three months old (easy mistake)

John and Helen Rider's gravestone puts their deaths in 2006 and Julia says it took her six months to track them down after the bridge exchange, so that checks out

Now in the present Mrs Jones says that it's been 17 years since Scorpia was destroyed, which would make s3 take place in early 2023

Alex is about to or just turned 17 years old

And therefore he was 15 in s1 and s2

S3 takes place over the course of nine days, which I think we can all agree is absolutely ridiculous, but that's how it works out.

Day 1: Boat ride; find Julia Rothman's house; Kyra's soup accident

Day 2: Identify and research Julia; Museum art showing

Day 3: Scorpia sends threat to Kellner; Tom and Alex go to Julia's villa; Pritchard gets blown up; Alex sneaks into Consanto and it blows up too; Alex goes to Malagosto

Day 4: Scorpia kills the footballers; Tom and Kyra get arrested; Julia tells Alex about his dad getting killed on the bridge; and Yassen! Is here!

Day 5: The assault course and the water bottle; shooting challenge; getting beat up by the other trainees; Pritchard's funeral; Tom and Kyra trace the call to Malagosto and Nile tries to send them home; the incursion assessment

Day 6: Shinai (Bokken) 5 on 1; Department calls Scorpia back and Scorpia gives them three days; Kyra and Tom find Malagosto; Smithers and Crawley find Julia's litter; Syl graduates; Jack gets a delivery from Tom; Max Grendel gets Yassassinated

Day 7: Everyone gets back to London; Blunt asks the CIA for help; Alex and Yassen surveil Jones' flat; Jack, Kyra, and Tom go to the Department; Navy Seals raid Malagosto; Alex doesn't kill Jones and gets sent back to the Department

So based on this and my S1 timeline this guy was yassassinated the day before his 43rd birthday.

From S1E4, Wilby snooping in Ian's file and realizing 'oh shit why is the info on dependents classified'.

This would suggest the first season of the show takes place in February or early-mid March 2020 (Ian's stated age here and his birthday), but... argh, is the short version. I don't think the weather and the cherry trees match that.

As for why there are so few non yalex fics, I'm not sure that's right? There are still many gen fics, but Yassen is a fascinating character and there's a lot of potential in his dynamic with Alex so I'm not surprised it's the most popular ship by far.

@akilah12902 and I are working on the Alex Rider (TV) metaseason timeline. The prop department seems to have gone rogue and there's a ton of inconsistencies happening in season 2 so we're having to decide what to keep and what to throw out.

Here's some of my notes:

Season 1 definitely happens in the last 3 weeks of the spring term, and it ends on the Monday before Easter.

For the year I did some guesswork work based on cherry blossom season and what date Easter falls on and 2019 and 2020 were both candidates, but 2021 is out due to peak cherry blossom bloom being only 6 days before Easter.

I also feel confident saying that Season 2 takes place largely in November of 2020 even tho there's a prop at the end of the season given to Jack that says her guardianship begins in April, 2021 (which would be 6 months later).

If we ignore the cherry blossom season/Easter inconsistency and put season 1 in 2021 then we could assume that the prop is backdated (to shortly after Ian's death), putting season 2 in November 2021.

[Ed. Note: because of s3 timeline stuff, we're going with 2021 for s1 and s2. RIP to my research into when cherry blossom season actually happened.]

By the way, the main problem with dating season 2 is because of wild inconsistency between the establishing shots and the shots with actors in them. Establishing shots all have green trees implying spring or summer, but in actual scenes trees are all bare and the actors are all wearing jackets, implying autumn. To make things even more confusing, the view from Tom's camera has trees covered in yellow leaves. There are also a couple of recycled shots of the front of Ian's house with the cherry tree in bloom out front that I am ignoring.

The timeline for Season 3 is insane and I'll have to get back to you on this one but we do know it takes place when Alex is 17 because of all the references to John's death being 17 years ago and Julia explicitly telling Alex that he was 6 months old when the hostage exchange took place (We're assuming that Julia isn't lying about anything that happened except by omission).

Jack's prop at the end of season 2 also gives Alex's birth date as Feb 13, 2005, which would mean that the hostage exchange took place in August of 2005 and season 3 takes place at some point in 2022. But again, the props department may have gone rogue.

I need to rewatch the second half of season 3 before I put down a definitive date for that part of the show.

I am vastly entertained by the technology/resources gap between the Department and SCORPIA. SCORPIA has money, influence, and gadget after gadget, but the Department has paper-pushing middle management, a minuscule budget, frequently condemned offices, and vastly superior HUMINT and SIGINT.

And this is one of the very few shows I can think of and I've mentioned this before where the things that both Kyra and Smithers can do on computers is actually within the realm of possibility. Instead of 'enlarge and enhance' we get 'blow up the saturation and see if we can get a hue and then stare at it until we recognise a billboard'! instead of I will use this laptop to decrypt this program we get I need to daisy-chain 40 machines working in parallel just to run pattern recognition on the code and then even when the encryption gets broken it turns out you have to be physically on site and connected to the server in order to read the nested code.

You have no idea how many times during Arrow or pretty much any MCU film that features a guy in a chair where I have beat my head against the wall, occasionally screaming about how 'hacking' is portrayed.

I particularly love that nobody at Point Blanc ever figured out that Kyra hacked the keypads and that the only visual cue you got that clone Kyra wasn't actual Kyra was the fact that she didn't put in the 0000 keypad code and by the time you register that, Alex has been conked in the head with a fire extinguisher. which granted should have crushed his skull and killed him but I am willing to cut them slack. Although at some point Alex is going to need some serious medical care for all of the traumatic brain injuries he has sustained.

also the timeline is a little wonky in Series 3 like I think it's supposed to be about 2 weeks in February 2023? because there is a time cut between two of the episodes where Alex's wounds from his beat down have had time to heal. but it couldn't have been longer than that because the delivery receipts on the pad thai that hid the plastic gun was dated 10 days after Pritchard transferred into the Department.

That said the data on screens and props is wildly wildly divergent and I have no idea how old Alex actually is supposed to be because if he was 6 months old when John was killed on 6 January 2006, then he is actually younger than he is supposed to be in the first series (although Alex Friend's passport has a completely different birth year then his Gemini file). But the date on the disc says it is from 21 May 2006 which means they may have meant that it was 1 June 2006 but that doesn't make any sense either because all of the dates across the entire series have been consistently written day-month-year.

(also I love the surveillance footage from the bridge where John Rider is supposedly killed that's conveniently goes from black and white to colour and swaps camera angles repeatedly.)

anyway I'm screen capping a metric fuck ton of on screen data to go through later. I've also noticed some small changes to the set apart from the brick patio that appears out of nowhere in series 3 which makes me think because it took 5 years to shoot 3 seasons during a global pandemic that they must have had to rebuild the 42 Collbridge Road kitchen set.

also I can't help but wonder if at one point they were going to try to mess with Mrs Jones backstory because all of her earrings are six-sided like the SCORPIA logo. and how much do I love that they actually have like a little animated logo with a musical sting and everything! I wonder if Damien Cray threw that in for free.

AR Ship Week - Fandom in 2024

Another year, another shipweek, and another State of the AR Shipping Fandom post. This is the first weekly post leading up to the Alex Rider Ship Week. Just under 4 weeks to go!

This post focuses on pre-S3 fandom, since the data was scraped before the season was released, but we might do an update for post-S3 fics. For methodology, it can be found both on the graphic analysis pages and in the notes at the bottom of this post. For those only curious about the popular pairings this year (1), feel free to read right on.

This year, we have analysed a few specific shipping stats to get a look at us as a fandom.

We have also created an interactive dashboard of all the graphs for you to explore. This is where the following data was taken from, as well as some bonus visuals!

A Timeline of AO3

For a blast from the past, we took a look at the shipping timeline - the count of fics and authors per year for the top ten most popular AR ships - and found immediate proof that as a shipping fandom, we're still small enough that a few, determined people can make a difference. AR fandom's use of AO3 as its primary fandom purveyor is fairly recent, as most of its history can be found on FFnet, but with a total of just under 3k fics as of April 20th, we're gaining on FFnet's 4.5k of AR fics at a very respectable pace.

Some particular developments were:

The number of Yalex authors was about the same in 2021 - 2023 (just around 40) but the number of Yalex fics in 2022 was almost double that of 2021 and 2023. This was not due to a sudden, imported backlog that we could see but a handful of popular events/challenges and potentially the release of S2 in December of 2021.

Tom/Alex and Yassen/Ian both had a peak of fics in 2021, most likely because of the release of S1 that gave Tom a much larger part and offered an intriguing look at Yassen and Ian's potential past.

Fiona/Sabina had a huge spike in fics in 2023 due to a Femmeslash February event (2) that sent it firmly up the ranks of popular ships.

The State of the OTP

For the top ten AR ships, we also took a look at how many of the writers that had written other AR ships (and which ones) to look for interesting patterns and to see if there was any real difference to spot. As it turns out, the answer was a resounding yes:

At one extreme, we have Alexmis (Alex Rider/Artemis Fowl) which is a fandom unto itself. Only 20 percent of the writers of the pairing have written for other pairings in AR fandom fics, and Alexmis fics as a whole tend to lean more towards adding Alex to the Artemis Fowl world rather than vice versa (3).

In the middle range, we have Yalex and Alex/Wolf - two pairings about as old as the fandom itself, and which both have an OTP percentage around 55 - as well as (mostly) newcomers Tom/Alex and Kyra/Alex, both with an OTP percentage in the 40-50 range.

At the other extreme, we have Yassen/John with an OTP percentage of just 4. Fiona/Sabina does it one better with an OTP rate of 0 (!) but the sample size here is so small it makes no meaning to compare it.

So what other pairings do these writers enjoy indulging in, then?

Yalex writers really like their Yassen pairings. Out of the combined number of non-Yalex fics the Yalex authors have written, 24 percent of them are Yassen/Ian and 22 percent are Yassen/John. This means that almost half of their non-Yalex pairings feature Yassen in some way.

70 percent of John/Helen shippers have written other pairings, too - probably because of the pairing's nature as a background part of Alex's story and not necessarily the focus of a shipfic they're in. 30 percent of the fics written by John/Helen writers outside of the ship are Yalex (and 6 percent are Yassen/John).

The case is even more extreme for Yassen/John, which is firmly entwined with the Yalex pairing. 96 percent of the writers have written other AR ships, with three quarters of those fics being Yalex.

Text Analysis

We also ran a text analysis on the shipfics to look for patterns and recurring details in the writing - first in general, then for specific ships. The amount of detail for each ship depends a lot on the sample size, which results in a detailed, varied word cloud for Yalex and somewhat less so for several of the smaller ships.

Note on methodology:

The two Alex Rider sections (main + TV) were scraped over the course of two days in early March 2024, except for fics that were locked to AO3 users only (5). For the author specific statistics, we excluded orphan_account and anonymous authors. Median measures were chosen over average the majority of the time to account for outliers, especially in the case of the rarer pairings (6).

For ship-analysis, a fic counts under every pairing it has.
