Also extremely happy for Villanous like NATIONAL PRIDE BABY WE DID IT WE ARE PLAYING WITH THE BIG BOYS!!!
And honestly just the fact that Pixelatl is hosted in Mexico and that people like Alex Hirsch and Dana Terrace and of course our favorite uncle Memo Totoro (he's from here ofc but it's worth mentioning because dude has a TWO FUCKING OSCARS ARE YOU KIDDING) have been here and given talks and all that.
Also shoutout to Las Leyendas, incredibly underrated show, I think it is genuinely really good? It's not like, Adventure Time, or any of the big names you have probably heard of, but it *is* story driven, and the story is good, and I am angry it didn't get a second season because Netflix es un puto pedazo de mierda y merece arder en los mil infiernos But. That's a topic for another day.
I feel like a lot of Mexican animation is just not fit for a wider audience precisely because of how Mexican it is. Like, Una Película de Huevos would NOT make sense to an American, you'd have to perform some amazing translation gymnastics to even get the *title* right. And also because of some racially insensitive shit with Chocolate Egg (I love him so much and he's awesome and I know it wasn't created with ill intent but that is certainly A Design Choice and like can you judge them this started as an indie animation series in fucking newgrounds). BUT LIKE, IF YOU GET PAST THAT I SWEAR ITS GOOD. BUT YOU REALLY HAVE TO KNOW SPANISH.
I feel like Las Leyendas is a lot more approachable to a theoretical international audience, even if La Leyenda de la Nahuala has animation that has not aged good at all, the other ones are a bit more solid. Yes, it is based on Mexican myths and history, and specifically in the colonial era. But I wouldn't see it as a barrier.
My personal favourite from my childhood was Nixtlé. I don't think it's based in any particular myth, and since the movie is supposed to be taking place in olmec times I feel they had a lot more freedom in terms of making shit up (context: we don't know a lot about the olmecs because they are an actually dead civilization, and were so long before European arrival. We just know they were the first people to arrive to mesoamerica and are thus related to modern indigenous peoples and cultures).
Anyway the movie is OK like nothing out of this world but it bears a place in my heart, specially because of the "bussiness" scene which is just, the absolute ridicule reality bureaucracy. It's so funny. And at least the main recurring joke (la ramita de tenmiacá, or the holdon branch) is easy to translate.
Other movies off the top of my head include the Topcat movie because anima studios manage to get the rights to the Hanna Barbera cartoon somehow, Marcianos VS Mexicanos which I hear is just an avarage adult comedy (but yk, made for a Mexican audience) and Pinocchio (NOT a Mexican movie, but the director is Mexican and how can you not be proud). Honorable mentions to every anime ever made, the Shreck movies, The Simpsons, and all the cartoons made Certified Mexican by the efforts of the voice actors.
Also love how Puss in Boots has half the same actors in Spanish and English AND it includes a variety of Spanish accents like Argentinian fucking goldocks I love her she is everything to me.
I totally forgot Ana y Bruno. Traumacore. Silly child-friendly shenanigans in the psych ward. The tonal whiplash of this movie is insane. It spent decades in development and you can clearly see the issues but it was also made with so much love. It made no money at all and if no one archives it it's gonna become lost media.
Hmmmm mmmmm mmm shit I should go to sleep

Bob’s Burgers 10th Anniversary Retrospective
After ten years, Bob, Linda, and the Kids are just as delightfully wacky and endearing as they ever were, and show no signs of slowing down. So I wanted to put together an ultra mega review of the series. I’ll give an opinion on main and recurring characters, as with a cast this big, there’s been a lot of endearing characters to grace the show over the years. However, I will only be counting characters that have appeared more than once. After ten years, there’s been some real gems, and some real misfires. So, I’ll be counting down my top 10 best episodes, and the bottom 10 worst episodes. I’ll also go through as a Highlight Reel, by picking a best and worst episode of each season, as well as crowning the Best Season with the most good episodes.
Bob Belcher
Honestly, Bob was a very easy character to mess up. He’s the straight man to his wacky family’s antics. But the show does a really great job making Bob simple and lowkey without making him boring or a stick in the mud. He may be resistant to weird things, but he puts up with it anyway to make his family happy. While he’s the serious straight man, they don’t fail to give Bob his own eccentricities and quirks that make him relatable and funny in his own way. Whether he’s making things talk, getting weirdly excited about Thanksgiving, or his awkward way of speaking, Bob is genuinely a good and relatable character. It’s also nice to see that Bob is a great husband and a loving father. He and Linda argue from time to time, but they’re not trapped in a loveless marriage for the kid’s sake like most shows. And even shows where that’s not a selling point like American Dad, Bob shows more remorse for things like forgetting their anniversary than Stan does for Francine. Bob is supportive, loving, and forgiving. Which is just amazing to watch. The times when his kids really need him, he’s there for them, and he helps them through their problems. While Bob might fight with and get mad with or annoyed by his family, Bob never treats them like people he’s stuck with. Frankly, Bob blows most animated TV dads out of the water. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Stan or Francine give quiet supportive talks to Steve or Hayley ever in American Dad. Peter used to at least try to be a decent father, but now is a negligent toddler. Likewise, Homer used to be a great father who cared about his kids, but later seasons have really stepped away from the family angle the Simpsons used to have. In a sea of adult animated families that are toxic and destructive, Bob’s genuine love for his family came as a breath of fresh air.
Linda Belcher
Linda is by far the best Adult Animation TV mom there is. For one thing, she’s funnier than Francine, Lois, and Marge combined. But more importantly, she’s not the butt of the joke when it happens. I can only really remember laughing at Francine when they make dumb blonde jokes with her, but Linda’s jokes come from her character. She could have easily been the gender inverted Homer or Peter, but the writers are careful to make her gullible, trusting, and goofy without making her a moron. When the kids do something wrong, Linda busts out the tough mom act and you genuinely believe that the kids are in trouble. She’s not faking it. She’s not off in her own little world. She’s a bit of a goofy dreamer, but she’s able to be the tough disciplinarian when she needs to be. Her relationship with Bob is also better than most adult animation wives. She’s more independent than the other housewives, and even though her job is working with her husband, it never feels like it robs Linda of her own power, autonomy, and freedom. But the best thing about Linda is that I think most people can agree, she has an extremely strong and charming personality that endears us to her.
Tina Belcher
I really wish I could say I liked Tina more. She’s a creative romantic, just like me. I should love her. But her monotone deliveries and awkwardness isn’t as endearing as Bob’s. I like her better in episodes like Teen-A Witch and Broadcast Wagstaff School News where she has a bit stronger of a personality. But unfortunately, Tina is my least favorite member of the Belcher family, which isn’t to say that I hate her, she just doesn’t shine as bright as the rest of her family. She’s just not very funny or interesting on her own. But on the plus side, at least I don’t find Tina to be annoying or terrible except in the rare bad episode.
Gene Belcher
Gene is the only member of the family that can regularly get my dad to laugh, and with good reason. If he wasn’t such a well of nonsequitor punchlines, Gene would probably be the worst member of the family, but boy howdy do those random jokes pick up the slack. Gene is genuinely hilarious, even if I’d only rank him above Tina in terms of favoritism. However, I find that most Gene-centric episodes to be lackluster or below average. I think Gene’s best episode is probably Y Tu Ga-Ga Tambien, but of the best episodes, none really come to mind that specifically star Gene. Gene is really better suited for a supporting role, and his times as the star showcase why comic reliefs aren’t the main character. They’re support characters for a reason. That’s not to say Gene-centric episodes are terrible. They just tend to range from about average to bad. Though Y Tu Ga-Ga Tambien is a pretty good one.
Louise Belcher
Bob and Linda saved the best for last because Louise is the breakout star of the show. Funny, interesting, and the focus of many of the better episodes, Louise stands proudly on the first place podium with Linda in 2nd and Bob taking 3rd place. I think Louise’s strengths are especially due to her standoffish and naughty personality, which has lent itself to a lot of good character growth episodes. Season 10 Louise seems a lot more mature than Season 1 Louise. I think Louise works because while she does often have clever or sneaky solutions to problems, they don’t forget that she’s 9, so unlike Stewie, her age does present hurdles and barriers to her schemes and plans.
The Best and Worst of Bob’s Burgers
#10 WORST: Pro-Tiki/Con-Tiki (S6e15)
Why couldn’t Warren Fitzgerald just put that $100,000 into advertisements or to help Bob buy better equipment for his restaurant? My biggest issue with this episode isn’t the episode itself, it’s that the ending makes no sense. Warren wants to help Bob because he has a form of riches Warren lacks, and Bob doesn’t want a corporate sponsor to make changes to his brand. But why can’t Warren just give Bob the money to make choices he wants to make? They could stay as business partners, but Bob doesn’t have to sacrifice his personal vision for the restaurant. It’s just really frustrating when they’re both being too stupid and stubborn to see the obvious solution in front of their faces.
#10 BEST: Teen-a Witch (S7e03)
One of Tina’s best episodes, as someone who had a goth phase myself and dabbled a tiny amount in ‘witchcraft’, this episode brings back memories of high school and the desire to make the world what I wanted it to be. But on top of that, Tina with a backbone is when she really shines as a character, mostly because it means her humor isn’t being derived from her being awkward.
#9 WORST: Live and Let Fly (S9e05)
Mr. Frond embarrasses the kids, and they team up with Up-Skirt Kurt to get revenge against his sister and Mr. Frond. I’m not a fan of Kurt, so I already don’t care much about his feud with his sister, but I also just find the episode kind of boring. I don’t care about Kurt, I don’t care about his feud, and the kids call off their revenge, so that ends up not mattering either. Even Bob and Linda’s side plot is only middle-of-the-road quality for Bob’s Burgers.
#9 BEST: Wharf Horse/World Wharf II (S4e21-22)
The very first two-part episode Bob’s Burgers ever had, the season 4 finale is a great watching experience. It has some fun songs, funny character exchanges, suspenseful drama, and some heartfelt moments. It feels like a short movie, and that’s a good thing for a two-part episode to do. Even Fanny and Felix are interesting villains. But even after everything Felix did, I don’t find myself loathing him in later episodes, and that’s a hard thing to accomplish.
#8 WORST: Tina-Rannosaurus Wrecks (S3e07)
This is the only bad Tina episode where the problem isn’t Tina herself. My biggest issue with this episode is more just the subject matter. Bob lies for insurance reasons about who was driving his car, and the entire episode is just Bob and Tina digging a deeper and deeper hole for themselves. The solution to the issue is clever enough to redeem the episode somewhat, but the majority of the watching experience is just kind of an awkward dance of watching these two getting tangled up in a web of lies.
#8 BEST: The Taking of Funtime One Two Three (S9e02)
Bar none, this is the single best ‘Heist’ episode of Bob’s Burgers, and it’s kind of crazy that Bob’s Burgers has actually built a repertoire to where I can make a list of ‘heist’ episodes as an archetype. This one feels the most like an actual heist movie, and the ending is legitimately clever and unexpected. But even more than that, if you’re paying attention, you can see the twist before the characters even reveal it. That is the kind of tight writing that makes the list for best episodes.
#7 WORST: A Fish Called Tina (S10e12)
Tina spends an episode trying way too hard to make someone like her, to the point that she almost humiliates a 4th grader in public just so she can live out some fantasy. It’s really uncomfortable and sickening to watch Tina do this. This will be a recurring issue with Tina’s low-point episodes. There’s nothing fun about watching a character make a complete idiot out of themselves by coming on too strong. It even makes me groan when Kaylie shows up in another Season 10 episode because I don’t want to have to think about this awful episode.
#7 BEST: Stand By Gene (S6e12)
Something about this episode really just brings back memories of my childhood. Memories of walking through the outdoors, just exploring and wanting to find things. The characters are funny, and Bob and Linda’s relationship is put to the test. Plus, I loved that for the entire episode, you don’t know how it’ll end. It really makes this a personal favorite and one of the episodes I knew had to make it on my list.
#6 WORST: The Grand Mama-Pest Hotel (S7e13)
Linda ruins things for Tina by being an overbearing annoyance. Are you noticing a trend with Bob’s Burgers’ worst episodes? I don’t like it when good characters make complete jackasses out of themselves in the name of ‘humor’. It’s not funny. It’s annoying and makes me dislike them. Thankfully, the worst of it is only in the latter half of the 2nd act and the entire third act, but Linda’s behavior just makes me cringe and ask why they had to do Linda dirty like this? It just puts me even more squarely on the side that Tina is entirely in the right and I don’t want to deal with Lind either.
#6 BEST: Broadcast Wagstaff School News (S3e12)
From Tina at her lowest point to Tina at her best, Broadcast Wagstaff School News is my favorite episode of the first 5 seasons. Tina’s funny and engaging, Gene is absolutely shining as Little Bob, and while Louise and Linda play supporting roles in this episode, they’re still funny as well. Plus, the mystery is a good one, and this episode is even referenced in later seasons.
#5 WORST: Mazel-Tina (S4e13)
Tina ruins Tammy’s birthday and steals her party. This is Tina at rock bottom. Tina is so despicable, cruel, and selfish in this episode that it reminds me that behind that creative awkward girl is a selfish brat who doesn’t care if she hurts other people if she can live out her fantasies. If other episodes didn’t rescue Tina from being so unlikable, I probably would hate Tina as a character entirely for her behavior in this episode.
#5 BEST: The Silence of the Louise (S8e02)
Movie parodies are some of the best, and The Silence of the Louise is the queen of all the movie parodies. When Mr. Frond’s therapy dolls are mutilated, and the school staff calls off the waterpark trip until the culprit is caught, Louise teams up with psycho Millie to figure out whodunnit. This is also one of the first time Millie wasn’t strictly an antagonist, and she genuinely felt like someone who could be Louise’s friend someday.
#4 WORST: Boywatch (S8e16)
Tina ruins things for other people by coming on too strong. The only reason this is ranked higher than Mozel-Tina is because in that episode, she just wanted to be at the party, and just kind of ended up as the star of the party and let it go to her head, whereas here, she is actively ruining things for other people in pursuit of her own delusions and fantasies. Tina has no desire to be a junior lifeguard, but cute boys causes her to behave like a troublemaker. She’s entirely out of character, and her teammates’ hate for her behavior is something I agree with. I don’t want to hate the main characters, so why does this show keep pushing to make Tina a nuisance who ruins experiences for other people?
#4 BEST: The Quirkducers (S7e06)
If the Silence of the Louise is the queen of film parodies, then The Quirkducers is the king. Not only is it a clever parody of The Producers, but it also has some damn good musical numbers, especially the edited end credit version. But it’s Tina’s song at the end that stands as one of my favorites of all Bob’s Burgers’ songs.
#3 WORST: Bed & Breakfast (S1e07)
If a Fish Called Tina is bad, then Bed & Breakfast is flaming garbage. Linda turns their apartment into a Bed and Breakfast, and Linda goes berserk when the guests don’t play into her expectations. This episode verges from below average to detestable as Linda goes insane and locks people in their rooms, and Louise drives a grown man to attack workers by preying on his fear.
#3 BEST: The Hauntening (S6e03)
This is hands-down the best Halloween episode that Bob’s Burgers ever made. This show turns out some amazing holiday episodes, and this is one of the best the Belchers have to offer. I won’t dare give away anything about this episode. If you’ve seen it, you know why it’s top of the heap, and if you haven’t, then all I can say is what are you waiting for? Delayed gratification has to pay off eventually.
#2 WORST: Every Which Way But Goose (S9e14)
Tina falls in love with a goose. Who smoked crack before writing this episode, and who huffed enough paint thinner to approve this episode for production? This is the absolute dumbest concept for an episode I have ever come across. Who thought this was a good idea? I can’t even pinpoint the flaws because this entire episode is just so flawed. At least Mazel-Tina and Boywatch enrage me. This just baffles me.
#2 BEST: A Few Gurt Men (S7e11)
When Mr. Ambrose accuses Mr. Frond of stealing his yogurt from the faculty lounge, the case is brought before student court, and Louise is tasked with acting as Defense Council for Mr. Frond. One thing Bob’s Burgers does well is mysteries, and this is a good one as Louise has to figure out a way to prove Frond’s innocence. This is just an absolute personal favorite. Every character is just on point, and I get excited when the episode starts to que up.
#1 WORST: Moody Foodie (S2e07)
Did you ever want to watch the Belchers commit a felony? Then boy howdy do I have an episode for you! A picky food critic responsible for shutting down restaurants comes to Bob’s Burgers. Bob messes up the order, and a visit to the critic’s house to get him to try his burger again leads to a hostage situation with the critic tied to a chair and gagged in his own home. Words cannot describe the depth to which I hate this episode. The entire episode feels dirty and vile. I feel the need to scrub my skin raw after sitting through this episode. The instant I realize that it’s come on, I skip the the next one. I have literally only sat through this episode once. This episode disgusts me. This episode has the main character, abduct somebody in their own home. Then they take a second hostage when a mailman delivers the guy’s package. Luckily, Bob’s Burgers has a lot of good episodes to make up for this one bad egg, but this episode enrages me to the point that if the family wasn’t so charming and endearing most of the time, I might have stopped watching based just on this one episode.
#1 BEST: The Bleakening: Part 1 & 2 (S8e06-07)
The first time I saw these episodes, they played back to back without any credits in between them, and I thought it was one episode, and I didn’t even realize it was the length of two episodes. Between the amazing songs, the brain bending twists, the creative creature, the dark elements that contrast the bright lights of the holidays, and the uplifting ending, this pair of episodes stands paramount as the single greatest viewing experience that Bob’s Burgers has to offer.
Favorite Friend of the Kids: Regular-Sized Rudy
First appearing in Carpe Museum, Rudy came back in The Kids Rob a Train, where he has remained a friend of the kids since. Rudy was the first to join the kids if you don’t count Andy and Ollie who seem to dip in and back out as to whether they’re included in the friend group. Rudy was thus the first to be made a main member of the kids’ friend group.
Favorite Schoolyard Seven: Jocelyn
The Schoolyard Seven is the friend group of the three Belchers, Jimmy Jr., Zeke, Tammy, and Jocelyn. Not counting the Belchers, it was a close call between Zeke and Jocelyn. Tammy and Jimmy Jr. tend to be typecast as serving one niche thing, but Zeke and Jocelyn are often the comedic gold. However, while Zeke is more interesting of the two, I just enjoy Jocelyn too much to not give her the win. Even if Jocelyn’s humor is just a walking dumb blonde trope, like Gene, Jocelyn has a knack for funny one-liners. If the groups has another name, I’m not privy to it.
Favorite Friend of the Family: Micky
Though he’s less connected to the family now, Micky has been a friend to the Belchers since Bob Day Afternoon, and returning in Bob Fires the Kids. Since his introduction, Micky has gotten a job at Wonder Wharf, where he has remained since.
Favorite Recurring Villain: Logan Bush
First appearing in Ears-y Rider, Logan has been a fun and interesting frenemy for Louise to match wits with. In a show where most other villains are the same age as the main characters (Millie, Tammy, Chloe, Jimmy Pesto, Hugo) Logan stands out as a legitimate bully. Yet, even he was willing to work with Louise in Mother-Daughter Laser Razor, showing that there is wiggle room for the two of them to even join forces and spread havoc together.
Favorite Tina Love Interest: Duncan
Earnest if not a little awkward, Duncan seems like a sweet boy for Tina to possibly end up with. Sasha Whiteman is another character I could easily see being a good boyfriend to Tina because his quick wit and social graces make him a great foil to Tina, and he excels where Tina falls short. Zeke has a good chance to be a good boyfriend, but Tina still spits his name when she greets him, so I doubt she’d take interest in him unless something happens to change their dynamic. I liked Josh, but now that he’s said he doesn’t like her anymore and she agreed that she feels the same, I doubt we’re going to see them date further in the future.
Favorite Side Character: Nat Kinkle the Limo Driver
First appearing in Season 8 episode 8 V for Valentine-detta, I must not be the only fan of Nat’s because she made two appearances in the 10th season, in episode 1 The Ring (But Not Scary) and episode 17 Just the Trip. Currently with only 3 appearances, she’s still only a side character, but I get the feeling that like with Rudy, Courtney, Darrel and Alex before her, Nat will keep becoming a more frequent character. She just has a great vibe, and her charisma is intoxicating. She meshes great with the family, making her an absolute delight to watch.
Favorite Bit Character: Marshmallow
Although she’s appeared in multiple episodes since her introduction in Sheesh, Cab Bob, Marshmallow has never gotten much more than a couple lines, with her biggest role being in The Bleakening where she had more to say. She was also the first major LGBT+ recurring character on the show, which also made her a joy to see, whenever she returned to Bob’s Burgers.
Favorite Headcanon: Gene is Genderfluid
Gene’s jokes have been centered on his gender or sexuality since the first season finale. A joke once in a while is one thing, but ten years of the same sorts of jokes tells the sharp viewer that there’s more to it than just a running gag. With how many jokes have Gene talk about having boobs, synching his cycle, or calling himself Tina and Louise’s sister or Bob and Linda’s daughter, it’s my opinion that Gene is genderfluid, or possibly even transgender. The only reason I say genderfluid over a transgirl is because he still also addresses himself as a boy or a man as much as he does girl jokes.
Best Song: Twinkly Lights (Ms. XXX-Mas)
Not only does Toddrick Hall absolutely kill this performance, but I also love the meaning of the song about POC inclusivity and pride in the LGBT+ community. As the final song in The Bleakening, it’s one hell of a closing number, and I can’t help but dance in my seat whenever it plays. I’ve even listened to it independent from watching the show, and honor I don’t bestow on every song.
Best Episode Archetypes:
The Best Heist: The Taking of Funtime One Two Three
The Belcher kids have stolen a number of things. Chocolate, a bounce house, but the absolute creme de la creme of their heists is the procuring of the Dunebuggy from Family Funtime. When Family Funtime unplugs the macchines whenver the kids get too many tickets from them, the kids decide to pull off the heist of a century to make off with the biggest prize of the arcade: the dune buggy.
The Kids Tell An Anthology: Moms, Lies, and Videotapes
From the Gayle Tales to The Handyman Can, the kids have told a number of anthology stories, but the most impressive of the bunch is their stories of the mother’s day plays into three interesting stories. Though true to form, Gene’s is the weakest of the three, as his usually are. I don’t recall any time when his anthology was the best of the kids’, but then, Gene is not the most creative of the three children. His best story is probably in The Frond Files where his story’s world is colorful and fun to observe.
Best Musical Episode: The Bleakening
Not only do these episodes have a lot of musical numbers, but there is not a single one that doesn’t hit a home run. But more importantly, the entire episode is a musical, with each number helping to tie and bridge together the narrative, which is the entire purpose of musical numbers in a proper musical, which makes this the single best musical episode mainly because it’s the only episode that’s a true blue musical.
Best Holiday Episode: The Hauntening
With The Bleakening already taking the top spot for musical episodes, that leaves the Miss Congeniality of the holiday episodes to take the crown. I didn’t spoil anything about this episode above, and I won’t say a thing about it now. This episode is solid gold.
Best Film Parody: The Quirkducers
Not only is this episode clever in the way it uses its source material, but the family all have moments to shine despite the stars being Louise and Gene. The show also makes good use of the Schoolhouse Seven (the main group of the Belcher Kids, Jimmy and Zeke, and Tammy and Jocelyn), and each of them brings something great to the episode. It undoubtedly earned its place in the top 10, and will likely hold its place for years to come.

NO! I have people who would miss my sorry ass, then murder me for coming back!
81: What is one thing everyone is bad at?
Having a lot of friends. A lot of the time (in my personal experience), the more friends you have, the less time you can spend with them, and the less close you are, until eventually you can’t keep dividing your time!
82: What time do you normally sleep? How many hours do you usually get?
uuuhh... yes, and not enough!

91: Describe yourself in one word.
Invasive
92: Describe your last victory.
I had a conversation with that asshole from my dream without arguing with him.
93: What is the weirdest thing you have ever seen?
SO! This one time towards the end of the school day in the seventh grade. This one kid (let’s call him V) was sitting next to his friend (C). I look over as I go to shoulder my bag, and V is running his hand down C’s thigh. V catches me looking, and goes “WHAT?! he did it first!” like that made it better! Auradon Improvement Initiative Explained! (Part 3): The Divided States of Auradon
Note: This is 1,800 or so words. It is a VERY long read.
“No one argues with Beast’s decision because he’s the best and the smartest and the most Good leader of all,” to paraphrase Melissa de la Cruz (author of the main Descendants book series), is the in-universe justification about how no one complains about Beast’s overarching decisions like the Magic Ban.
To me, it honestly sounds like propaganda from a totalitarian regime like North Korea, the kind of oversimplification and shielding from brutal reality that a parent would give a very young child, or a massive insult to the intelligence of the people of Auradon, especially egregious because I can name at least two Disney Princesses who have “incredible intelligence and studiousness” as one of their key traits, Belle (Beauty and the Beast) and Jasmine (Aladdin).
You could say this is actually even MORE insulting because one of them is actually married to the man, and would have unparalleled influence in his decisions.
This part of my long, drawn-out, and at times “very concerning for the sheer passion I’m putting into it series of how I would improve Descendants advises doing away with the “United” States of Auradon.
Instead, it would make them the “Divided” Countries of Auradon, unified only by international agreements and trade, but otherwise each their own government.
As of now, Auradon is like a Federal Government, with a central government that enforces nation-wide policy and being the ultimate source of power (Auradon City, Beast, and eventually, Ben), but each state/kingdom has its own regional government that actually handles the nitty-gritty of day-to-day operations and their own unique local issues and concerns (the various monarchs who still rule over their dominions, such as Aladdin and Jasmine over Agrabah, the Emperor over China, or what remains of the Parliament of London).
The regional governments have been shown to have incredible scope of power, as with King Arthur being legally able to literally keep Camelot in the Dark Ages, and Ben is presumably unable to veto that for whatever reason, but as the above quote says, everyone generally falls in line with whatever Beast says because “he’s the King.”
I hate that.
I want disagreements between states, actual fucking politics, diplomacy, and compromise, show how difficult it is to get all of these vastly different cultures to agree on something as inane as the theme for an annual international event, much less trade agreements that could literally end with people starving to death, or dire emergencies like outbreaks of disease that could spread VERY quickly everywhere, largely because of Auradonians habit of gelling together and crowding in the streets for random dance numbers, all whilst singing at the top of their lungs.
Make it so that Ben is frequently shown or referenced to be in long, grueling meetings, constantly overseeing, reading and listening to, and making decisions for the government like an actual King in a modern, interconnected environment like this, and how it’s a delicate high-wire act with a lot of ass-kissing, self-sacrifice, and sometimes pandering to the most frivolous aspects of your fellow rulers and influential figures.
It may be ridiculous to knight a duchess’ dog, but it’s not so ridiculous when that act stands between you and solving a massive uprising in the farmers who demand to finally be able to own the land they’ve been tilling, rather than to still have to pay tribute to the lady of the estate AND taxes to the government.
And then show that this is just Auradon City level politics, that this isn’t even going into how deep, complex, and ridiculous it can get the individual kingdoms, especially a hub of international trade activity like Arendelle.
Make a reference to how they DID try to have Beast be the Supreme Ruler, but after a few months of his dictatorial, no compromises, “Obey me or I will yell at you until you do!” leadership style, everyone got sick of his shit, and realized this was a bad idea.
Teach kids that being a leader (especially a King) doesn’t mean you always have to fight for and get what you want, it’s figuring out the best solution for everyone, and is oftentimes an inglorious, difficult job where the criticisms are many and the praise is few.
And if you constantly throw tantrums and demand everyone bow down to you, that’s a great way to turn your allies against you, have them unite in their desire to kick you out, and make even more trouble for everyone.
(On a side note, I headcanon that relations, professional or personal, between King Beast and Queen Elsa are still strained to this day. The staff make sure they are never alone together in a room.)
All the realism aside, to make everyone hold hands and dance 24/7 is an insult to the classic Disney movies, which thrived on division between the people within a single kingdom, or even a small town.
To use Beauty and the Beast, would Belle and her father Maurice’s plight have been as interesting if they weren’t ostracized for their intelligence and bookishness? If they all got along just fine, and the mob heading up to Beast’s castle was just to politely ask what happened to Belle, not to “Kill the Beast!”?
It would also make the world extremely interesting by giving every individual state/country/kingdom their own identity and theme, a culture and a personality, rather than just be aesthetic choices like a “UN Pride Parade” with all-white, middle class, American paraders wearing traditional costumes of countries they may not have even heard of.
Make it so that Auradon City is like Washington DC, a hub of political activity and where the children of diplomats and politicians generally go to get educated, but it doesn’t have much else going for that—in fact, it would be nothing of value if Auradon didn’t exist.
After all, the value of the Silver Dollar is entirely dependent on there being a government that recognizes its value, otherwise it’s just worth as much as the silver, gold, or jewels it’s made of.
Make China, Arendelle, and Agrabah as the three major economic powers, having massive sway in all political decisions because they could bankrupt or cause untold damage to the World Bank, and be perfectly fine within their own borders as they are completely self-sustaining, or people would trade with them regardless.
Show the effects of a culture and a kingdom that lives and dies by trade and worships the Silver Dollar, what kind of people that would produce, what sorts of products they have going for them and the unique challenges in having all this money flowing around freely.
I can guarantee you that the crime rate wouldn’t be at 0% as Ben says in the novels.
Make Sherwood Forest and Corona the countries for “Gray” characters, the last stop between Auradon and the Isle, and a safe-haven for those that don’t fit in. Redo the Snuggly Duckling scene but on a larger scale, humanize the Islanders and show just how cruel and inhumane the Isle of the Lost is by showing the people that just barely the boats, and have them not be that different from what we’ve seen from the ones actually behind the barrier.
And I would love it if there is mention of rehabilitation centers to make offenders right their ways than leaving them to rot in jail, and these two are the most active states with social programs meant to help the marginalized, the outcast, and the poor—where most “criminals” and “Evil” people originate.
Make London, (Now-Not-So Ancient) Greece, and Atlantis* (not to be confused with the Atlantis in Triton’s Bay) as centers of technological advancement, because they were industrial revolution natives, are known for their artisans and their scientists already (Icarus and Daedalus, among others), and of course, are really intent in reviving their old technology and advancing it to fit the brand new world they live in.
Have the most blatant, fantastic shows of science and technology here, not just smartphones which are so everyday, but flying vehicles en masse, intelligent robots, and Icarus yet again flying to close to the sun, only this time, it’s with jet propulsion and a digital HUD telling him exactly just how high is too high.
Make Bayou de Orleans, France, and Camelot as centers of culture preservation, popular tourist spots that have embraced both the modern amenities of the internet and improvements in infrastructure while not completely (or sometimes, literally) paving over with concrete their rich histories and the natives.
Show people all the numerous bits of culture and history without all the commercialization (or alternatively, make commentary about how they got commercialized and disrespected because of greed), broaden the horizons of your viewers, pay homage to the many wonderful artists and arts that have sadly been forgetten, if not outright erased from history by abusive ruling classes.
Camelot would be particularly interesting as I would see it suffering from King Arthur’s phobia of technology, and even more so with the Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Beep-Boop headcanon before this post.
It could be a criticism of excessively conservative culture, but also acknowledge that people can suffer from “Future Shock,” and you should be helping them adjust to this new world, than claiming they just need to “get with the times” and demeaning them.
Make DunBroch, Neverland, Motunui, and Hawaii as their own independent countries, not part of the union, use them to really hammer in the tension and the problems that came with Beast’s unified rule, and how their “perfect leaders” aren’t so perfect, and banding together and joining hands may not always save the day—the world is much more complex than that.
Above all, though, I’m saying Descendants would really be improved by EMBRACING THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY DISNEY IS TRYING TO SHOW WITH THIS FRANCHISE.
A diverse cast of POCs and retroactively making White characters into POCs is a good start, but until the different cultures they all come from stop being a purely aesthetic matter, and start being a valuable, realistic, and integral part of who they are, we’re going to have problems.
There’s a world of difference about how someone will act, think, or do, depending on where in the world and what kind of society they’ve been raised into.
As of now, Auradon is WAY too “White Upper Class America” for my taste, and could do with a good deal of realism, and showing the other 99% that don’t live in unparalleled luxury, comfort, and privelege, than just exclusively the Royal 1%.
* Atlantis hover vehicles may have been hit by the magic ban, though. But then again, I would imagine they have a lot of exceptions, as full enforcement would mean that EVERY SINGLE ATLANTIAN (again, not to be confused with Ariel’s domain) would be immediately sentenced to death as their life crystals are why they’re still alive after all this time.

Women and Entrepreneurship—with Christy Wright
Christy Wright: So here’s what’s interesting, and this is research-based, this is not just my experience alone. But I think we can all agree men and women, in general, are wired differently. And women, generally, are very, very relational. So we value ourselves by our relationships, as a mother, as a sister, as a daughter, as a friend, as a wife, and so on. Well this is great in business, because we are amazing at customer service. You don’t have to tell a woman how to take care of people, because that’s what she does, that’s who she is. It’s like telling a fish to swim, like this is who we are.
However, being wired relationally tends to pose some challenges when relationships are at play in business. For example, pricing . . .
Pat Flynn: You’re listening to Christy Wright, a good friend of mine from Business Boutique. Business Boutique is also an event that I spoke at that is run by Christy and her team over at the Dave Ramsey Group. And it was probably one of the most spectacular events I’ve ever spoken at. Over 3,000 people in this amazing space, very professional. I felt like I was being taken care of the whole time, and more than that, the response from the audience just blew my mind. And what I love about what Christy has built as a business woman is she’s built not just some of the best information I’ve seen online, but specifically tailored to women in her goal to help women start businesses.
And I wanted to bring her on today to talk not just about how to get started in business and how to overcome those fears that we all have, but I haven’t really wanted to have her come on to speak to me, and to a lot of the men out there, and also the women, but mainly just talk about women in business. I severely think women are underrepresented in the business space. I feel like there is a ton of talent that we just don’t even know exists, which is why I wanted to bring a talented woman on to share with us some of the things we can think about when it comes to gender and entrepreneurship. This is a little bit different of an episode, but you know, as a business owner and an entrepreneur and somebody who is trying to deliver value, I think it’s really important to talk about all kinds of topics.
And we get a little deep in this episode, but it’s going to be massively helpful, whether you are a man or a woman and you’re listening. And I appreciate you so much. Let’s cue the music, then we’ll get to the good stuff. Here we go.
Announcer: Welcome to The Smart Passive Income Podcast, where it’s all about working hard now, so you can sit back and reap the benefits later. And now your host—he once contemplated becoming a lawyer, until he job-shadowed for a day—Pat Flynn!
Pat: What’s up Team Flynn? Welcome to Session 362 of The Smart Passive Income Podcast. My name is Pat Flynn, here to help you make more money, save more time and help more people too. Like you know, today we’re speaking with Christy Wright from BusinessBoutique.com. You know what we’re talking about. Sit back. Enjoy. Here we go.
Hey Christy, welcome to The Smart Passive Income Podcast. Thank you so much for being here today.
Christy: Hey Pat. Thanks for having me. I’m excited about this.
Pat: Absolutely. And I wanted to thank you publicly here, because I went to your event a couple years ago, Business Boutique. It was by far one of the most favorite experiences I’ve ever had on stage. Thank you so much for that opportunity. Your fans and the people under your wing are just amazing. Everybody I met there had some amazing stories to share about how you’ve changed their lives.
Christy: Well you were a huge hit. It’s a really special tribe. It’s amazing. It’s this close-knit family. And I’m sure you experienced this even with your listeners as well where you kind of lock arms, and you say “You know what, business can be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be, and we’re gonna do this together.” So we loved having you, and of course we’ve had you on the podcast. And you’re just such a huge hit with our tribe, so we’re always so grateful for you.
Pat: Thank you, and what I loved about the event that was very different from the hundreds of others that I’ve been at was that you had a row of vendors outside of the main stage. And I was like “Oh, this is cool.” These were very women-driven businesses and stuff; I realized that they all started as a result of being a part of your tribe. These businesses wouldn’t have started without you. I thought that was really cool to kind of showcase your people there like that.
Christy: Yeah it’s fun. And a lot of times what we’ll do . . . and we may have done this at the event you spoke at, but we will also highlight interviews on stage of women who are running seven-figure businesses, they’re running multi-million dollar businesses, and they started as an attendee in the seat in the crowd. And you just see that faithfulness of how they’ve grown it, because there are a lot of people in the crowd in their shoes years before thinking “Oh, I don’t know if I can do it.” And you see the success story of someone just like them that did it, and that’s what we love about highlighting those stories. We can teach stuff, and you know this, we can teach stuff all day, but man when you hold up an example, they go “Oh, if she can do it, I can do it.” And that’s really powerful.
Pat: Super powerful. And I wanna dig into your origin story a little bit, because I don’t actually know a lot about how you got to where you’re at. You are an amazing example of a business leader, and how did you even get into business in the first place?
Christy: Well it’s funny, I think it’s interesting how in life—and I’m in my mid-thirties now—depending on your listeners or their age, but at any stage of life, you might be going through something and thinking that it doesn’t have a lot of purpose or you just gotta get through this tough season or whatever. But in hindsight, you start to see patterns, and I think that’s what really happened for me about five years ago, where I just consistently saw this pattern of business.
I was raised by a single mother entrepreneur. My mom started a little bakery when I was six months old to raise and support me. Really to survive. And a lot of people get into business to survive, Pat. It may not be the best reason they get in, but gosh, it’s a real motivator, because you gotta make it. And she had $64 dollars to her name.
So I was raised literally in the business. She would bring me down there, to the cake shop, at two and three and four in the morning when she had to bake. She’d make a little bed for me on the powdered sugar bags and flour bags, and I would sleep there until it’s time to go back to elementary school. I’d go to school with the smell of sugar in my little white blonde hair. It’s far from Pinterest perfect, but here’s what’s so cool, Pat, is that was my normal. Growing up in a business, I spent more time with her employees than I did my own friends in many cases.
And you think “Oh poor Christy.” No, let me tell you something: I had a front row seat to watch a woman use her gifts and build a business and make an impact in the world. And you can’t put a dollar amount on what that example did for me, because it taught me what it looks like to use your gifts, what it looked like to be independent, what it looked like to make your own way and make an impact and help people and how you talk to customers and how you lead your team members.
So this was in my DNA from the very, very beginning. You see this pattern of business in my story, but then I always had a desire for business. I went to college, I got a degree in business administration. I started two side-businesses in my twenties just for fun to kinda make extra money to help pay my rent. At the time, I was making entry-level nothing and needed some extra money. And then became a certified business coach and then became a coach through EntreLeadership here as part of Dave Ramsey’s organization.
And then we started to see, about five years ago, six years ago, just this trend in the marketplace, of there’s this unbelievably huge market of women specifically. Now everyone’s getting into entrepreneurship, but I wanna focus on women specifically, because there’s this market of women that are going “I want to do something but I’m sure what,” or “I want to do something but I’m not sure how.” And there are women who don’t want to climb the corporate ladder. They don’t want to work the nine to five, they want more flexibility to go the field trips with their kids. They wanna do it on their own terms and it’s more accessible than ever before.
You could start business tomorrow with nothing more than your idea and a Facebook page. The risk is low, the cost is low, the barrier to entry into the marketplace is low, but they get into it and they’re not sure what to do. What about taxes? What about trademarks? How do we sell without being pushy, and that’s where I can use all of these seasons of my life, my training, my education, my own personal experience, and be able to intersect these women’s lives and give them the hope and encouragement they need to push past their fear, but also the tactical business principles to show them the steps they need to do it.
And what’s amazing, Pat, and I’m sure you experienced this yourself, but even just at our events, but it is so much easier than they think. It’s harder than they think in many ways, ’cause you really gotta work hard. But they think that they can’t do it or, “Oh I’m not business-minded, I don’t have a background in business, I’m not cut out for business.” No, they just need what anyone needs, which is a little bit of help. And that’s where I come in. I love drawing from different aspects of our story to be able to serve them and lead them along this journey of really chasing their version of success. If that’s $1,000 dollars a month and a side business, awesome. If it’s a multi-million dollar business, awesome. I just wanna help them do that thing they love to do and make money doing it.
Pat: For the tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people you’ve helped . . . and make sure you listen to Christy’s podcast and get involved in her brand Business Boutique, she’s got some amazing things to offer. For all those experiences that you’ve had teaching other entrepreneurs, what are the one or two most common roadblocks that beginning entrepreneurs have and how do you, in your style, recommend they break through them?
Christy: Okay, this is good. There are probably a top few, but I’ll give you the number one by far that I’ve seen, and that’s fear. That sounds really theoretical and really just like it’s a feelings thing. But fears are a real barrier, because here’s what I’ve noticed, Pat, and you may have experienced this even on stage at the event. What women need when they come to our event and what they think they need are two different things. They think they need tools and information and steps and plans. And they do, and we give them that. But what they actually need is encouragement. They need someone to look them in the eyes and say “You can do this, and I believe in you, and I know that you can win. In fact, I’m so confident you’re gonna win that I want you to email me your story when you’re winning, ’cause I wanna share your story on my podcast.”
They need someone to give them permission, and what’s so incredible is when you give them that belief, the ground starts to move beneath them and they begin to take action and implement the steps and implement the plans. But you can give them all the best information in the world, Pat, but if they’re scared they’re gonna stay stuck, and they’re not gonna do anything about it.
So that’s what I love about everything with our brand is we really hit the inspiration and the information. You can’t have one without the other. If you’re inspired then you feel good, but you don’t know what to do. And if you just got information, then you know what to do but you’re too scared to do anything about it. So I think fear is a real barrier. And I would say that that is true for men and women. It is not something unique just to women. It’s very, very common in entrepreneurship, because entrepreneurship is risky and vulnerable. You’re putting yourself out there to be rejected or to fail.
And it’s certainly very prevalent in any of the creative spaces. Any of the arts. Anything where it’s a service-based business, you’re selling yourself, your skills. Man, that fear gets loud. The imposter syndrome. “Who are you to do this? Who do you think you are starting a business?” And gosh, the old cliché is so true. Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will, so if I can equip people on how to not only understand fear . . . it is a real thing so let’s just understand it and call it out, but also practical, tactical steps to push past it. Thank gosh, they’re set free to actually do something.
So I think fear is probably the number one. I would say the second most common that I’ve seen, at least in the women that I’ve worked with, is perfectionism. It’s this idea that I’ve got to get it perfect before I launch. I’ve gotta get the website perfect before I put it up. I’ve gotta get the product perfect before I ship it. I’ve gotta get the business perfect before I tell anybody about it. And Pat, you and I both know there’s no such thing.
Pat: No.
Christy: There’s no such thing as perfect! It’s the most ridiculous lie that we all believe and stay stuck with. And if I can help people understand that business is a conversation with the marketplace—and conversation means two people are talking, so if you’re gonna have the marketplace respond to you and your business and your product and your service and your idea, you’ve gotta put something out there, which means you put out the 1.0 version.
The iPhone started with an iPhone 1. You’ve got to start somewhere. So you put out the crappy best version you can come up with. The marketplace responds and says “Hey, a little more of this, a little less of this. Hey, you know what would be so cool is if you added this.” And then you know what they need. You make those iterations and adaptations. You come out with your 2.0 version, and you put that out. And that’s what that conversation looks like over time. And you never get there, to perfect, because your job as a business owner is to always be responding to the needs and desires of the marketplace, and the needs and desires of the marketplace are always changing.
So this is an ongoing thing, so I would say fear. Fear of failure, fear of the competition, fear just in general, fear of what people will think is probably the number one. And then the second I would say is just staying stuck and being paralyzed by this idea of perfection that doesn’t actually exist anyway.
Pat: Yeah, I can vouch for both of those on my end as well. And the fear especially. For me as a man, I know that I have certain fears that relate to . . . men are like “Okay we have to be the breadwinner. I for we’re not, we’re letting our families down.” Those are the kinds of things that I think of. Are there any unique fears that are women specific that I and the men listening to this might not even know exist?
Christy: Yes, I would love to talk about this. So here’s what’s interesting, and this is research-based. This is not just my experience alone. But I think we can all agree men and women, in general, are wired differently. And women, generally, are very, very relational. So we value ourselves by our relationships, as a mother, as a sister, as a daughter, as a friend, as a wife and so on.
For example, pricing or setting policies to protect yourself when you’ve got crazy customers. Or standing your ground. Or setting yourself apart from the competition. How do you sell without being pushy? “Well I don’t wanna get on people’s nerves. I don’t wanna annoy someone. Well I just, I just, I just—” you know.
And so you start to see these unique challenges that we have that, it doesn’t mean we can’t overcome them. Again, you need to understand them and develop those muscles and those skills. But even if you look at research in general, women tend to be more fearful than men. Research shows as early as childhood that boys are more risk-takers. Girls are more risk-averse. So that it shows when little boys and little girls, around age four to five, are riding bicycles, little girls break sooner when riding their bicycles.
Now this is fascinating to me, because you think of the implications of this as grown men and women in business. Okay, well then you also look at . . . it says in this research that I’ve studied, little boys are slower to learn from calamities. Can I get an amen from boy parents out there?
Pat: I can vouch for that too, yeah.
Christy: They tend to attribute their mistakes to an outside source. “Oh it must have been a rock in the road, that’s why I wrecked my bike. Couldn’t have been me, right?” Whereas, little girls tend to internalize their mistakes. “I am the problem. Something’s wrong with me.” Little girls, also it shows, never want to make the same mistake twice. So boys can fall down and think, “Oh okay, I’ll try this again.” And the little girl’s like “I’m never gonna do that again.”
Now let’s fast forward again to being grown men and women in business. I can tell you, Pat, from experience that . . . I’ve shared this story before, I dunno if I’ve shared it with you, but about ten years ago, I had a speaking event where I bombed. It was an every speaker’s worst nightmare. So awful. I wanted to disappear in front of the audience. I just totally bombed. So I drove home from that event, it was six hours away, in a rental car, and I cried the whole drive home. And you know what? I told myself “Never again. I will never speak again. I will never walk on another stage.” Because that’s what pain does. That’s what failure or falling down does. It makes you want to protect yourself against that. And again, women tend to internalize that and think I never wanna make that same mistake twice.
Now thank god I didn’t let that happen, and I’ve pursued a speaking career and so on. But I think a lot of people actually let those failures or fall-downs or setbacks define them, and if we can understand that as women, we tend to be more fearful, we tend to internalize setbacks more, then we can just be aware of that, and then we can fight against it.
When I had that voice in my head say, “Who are you to do this?” I can identify “Oh, that’s the imposter syndrome. I don’t have to listen to that. That’s a thing and that doesn’t have to hold me back.” So just having the information can really equip you to do something different about it. You don’t have to be a victim to that mentality, or even just maybe some of the challenges we face in how we’re wired. Because we all have strengths and weaknesses, but if we’re aware of it, we can grow and become mature and grow beyond that.
Pat: For sure. And I love that we’re discussing this, and a lot of the things we’re saying are quite general, but you go out there and you can actually confirm a lot of this stuff. And there are studies that have been done about this. But I love this topic, because I think it’s a topic that especially men like myself, we kinda avoid sometimes or we don’t even realize how important it is to understand how women are thinking.
I went to a event once, and I went inside and it was all men. I knew, I was like, “Guys, if you share this, you’re going to get a number of women who are gonna speak up and say where are the women being represented in this situation?” It wasn’t a male-specific thing on the surface, but it was when I went inside. And I just knew. And then of course once we started sharing photos, it was like “Okay, great, but where are the women?” And I think that’s something we need to be attuned to—and I know this may cause some controversy in terms of comments or what people think, but I just wanna open up this discussion, which is why I’m happy you’re here to talk about this. I even have more to understand as well about this.
So as a woman or the women listening to this . . . so we’ve discovered a little bit of the challenges. What might be, and you’ve discussed this a little bit, some of the other advantages and ways that men and women can both sort of complement each other, do you think?
Christy: Yeah, and I think in our highly, highly polarized world, it’s easy to take any one line or any even one topic and take it out of context and draw fifty-seven conclusions that are not helpful. So let’s just say this: My personal opinion, Pat, is that there is a time and place for both. There is a time and place for equal representation in business, in conferences, on the stage, on the media, for sure. I also love that you have things, you have organizations that are only male or only female—that’s what I love about Business Boutique.
Let me tell you, something special happens when you get 3,000 women in a room, and they feel the safety and the camaraderie of that sisterhood. There’s something so intimate and special about it also. So I think there’s a place and time for both. I think this is not a equal pay conversation, this is not an equal representation conversation, but it really is understanding how we can learn from each other and leverage each other’s strengths. But in order to do that, you need to be having the conversation and be in the same room. You need to have the right people at the table. And I think it’s a huge miss when we don’t understand the value of that equality, and we don’t understand the value of having both genders represented in these conversations.
I will say too—if you wanna ruffle some feathers Pat, let’s just ruffle some feathers. I don’t think any woman should be promoted because she’s a woman. I think she should be promoted because she’s the best person for the job. And that may make some people mad, and that’s fine. But you need to have the right people in the room, and the right people are the people that are the smartest, the most experienced and so on. How insulting would it be to me if someone promoted me or offered me an opportunity just because, “We need a woman?”
Pat: Right.
Christy: I wanna be there, Pat, because Im friggin’ good. Because I’m smart. Because I have something to bring to the table. So that’ll make some people mad, but you’ve got to look at this as good business practice. Who do you want on your sports team? Who do you want on your leadership team? Who do you want on your board of directors? You want the best. I don’t care what gender they are. I don’t care what color they are. I don’t care where they come from. Whether they have families or don’t have families. I don’t care. I just want the best people. And I think that if you wanna build a business, then you need the best people there. And I’d be willing to bet there are a lot of women that are the best people that might be overlooked simply because they may be in a heavily male-dominated industry or they might be just kind of the status quo. It’s definitely something we need to open our eyes too but not get so extreme to say “Well we just need to . . . poor women, poor women.” No, no, no, no
Pat: Right. Like, “Hey guys, on our charts, we only have 20 percent women in our company. I think we need to bring that up to 30, because that’s what the state requires,” all that kind of talk. And we see this in a lot of the startups that are happening today, conversations around gender and race and those kinds of things. And I love what you just said about, let’s just hire the best. The best can be male or female or any race and color.
Christy: Let’s just say this: It’s a great time to be a woman. It’s a great time where finally, because of a lot of the stuff that’s been going on in our news headlines and in politics and so on, where there is more awareness. There is more opportunity. There’s more money. There’s more funding available than ever before. And we still have a long way to go, yes, yes, yes, I know that. But let’s celebrate where we are. Let’s celebrate the victories that we have along the way, and just say “Okay, what door can I knock down for myself or how can I get my business in this space or grow something beyond what’s been done before?” So it’s just a really great time for your women listeners that are listening thinking, “I wanna go after this grant” or “I wanna go after this funding” or “I wanna start this business, and I feel intimidated in this space.” There’s a lot of support from women organizations and advocates for women leadership in women in business. So it’s a really great time anyway to do it, because of all the things that have been going on.
Pat: Thank you, Christy. I’m curious, as an entrepreneur who targets mostly women—although I remember being at the event and seeing number of men in the audience too. You don’t necessarily 100 percent exclude men, it’s just more women are attracted to the way that you teach and who you’re targeting. For the women in the audience who are targeting other women, do you have any specific advice for them? Is that a good route to go versus let’s share my information with both males and females because it can pertain to both, or do you find that there is an advantage in focusing on one gender mainly in your marketing and such?
Christy: Yeah, I actually got this question . . . it’s funny, Pat. I was up in New York doing a media hit for Cheddar TV. It’s actually hosted on the New York Stock Exchange floor, which is so cool and so intimidating. But they asked me this question about gender. But they asked it in a very like, “Oh, we’re not supposed to raise our boys to be boys and girls.” It was kind of a trapping-type of question about gender with all the stuff. And I said, “Here’s the thing. It has nothing to do with gender in the sense of there are business principles for women, there are business principles for men. That’s not what I’m saying. It’s all about knowing your target market.”
So what I would say for your listeners is figure out who your target market is. Who is your ideal customer? Who is that perfect person that can benefit from your business? And it might be a specifically female or specifically male—and it might have nothing to do with gender. But you do need to know who they are, because if you don’t know who your business exists to serve, then I promise you you’re not reaching them.
And so what I found is that my ideal customer, our primary target market for example are women. But we actually have a secondary target market. And our secondary target market are men. And we identified this through actually, after our first event in 2015. In 2016, we were selling tickets to this 2016 event, and we kept getting all these testimonies from women that came to the event saying “Oh my gosh, my husband bought me a ticket. My husband bought me a ticket. It was the best Christmas gift. My husband bought me a ticket. It was the best birthday gift. My husband bought me a ticket.” On and over. We’re like “Hey, maybe there’s something here, men buying their wives tickets.”
So you better believe in May, we ran a Mother’s Day campaign: “Hey, buy a ticket for your wife. It’s the gift that says I believe in you.” And so we have a secondary target market. So here’s the incredible insight into that, because we take the time to get to know our customer.
Typically, or I’ll say this, there’s a large percentage of women in the Business Boutique market that just struggle to believe in themselves. They are stuck in the starting phase or the dreamer phase, or even if they’re builders and they’re growing businesses, they just don’t have that confidence. They would never buy a ticket to an event that’s $130, because they don’t believe in themselves that much. “Oh that’s a waste.” They would spend it on their kids or their husbands, but they wouldn’t spend it on themselves. It feels very selfish. Again, this is all the psychology of how they are wired and also how they view themselves in their business.
So if you market to men and say “Buy this for a woman in your life,” and he buys her a ticket that gets her to an event that changes her life and her business, that’s awesome. Because this is understanding the markets. Sometimes they won’t buy these things for themselves, so the men in their life, a son or a dad buys them a ticket, and it’s that little nudge that pushes them over the edge. It’s a great gift that’s like, “Oh my gosh, he got me the best gift ever.”
So you can have a primary target market and a secondary target market, and yours may be gender specific or it might not. It just matters that you know your target market. In our case, I wanted to create a safe place where women that were feeling insecure or women who don’t have a business background that feel intimidated, or “Oh, I’m not an entrepreneur,” that they could come and feel like “Hey, this is for me.” So it created this safety. And we certainly have, like you said, we have men come. It’s not exclusive to women, but it’s about knowing your target market so that you can reach that person.
Pat: I love that. And for both men and women, obviously I think we all struggle with, like you said earlier, the fear and the perfectionism in different kinds of ways and for different reasons. However, if we’re past the dreamer stage and we’re ready to get started, what might our first steps be from there?
Christy: Well, I know I wrote Business Boutique as a plan with a step-by-step, so people who wanna plan . . . I’m a runner, Pat, so if I wanna run a marathon, I’m gonna download a plan. And that’s just helpful to see one step in front of the other. But here’s what I would say would be the most important thing for your listeners: It’s to take a step. Now I know that sounds so basic, I realize that. But here’s the problem. [Full Disclosure: As an affiliate, I receive compensation if you purchase through this link.]
A lot of times we stay dreamers, because we dream of this big, awesome vision that’s five years, ten years down the line. And then we get real excited about it, and then we get real intimidated by it. It’s like “Well I can’t never get there.” So we just stay stuck. Well instead of getting intimidated by this big awesome vision, what would just be the tiniest baby step you could take today toward that? Maybe it’s a Google search, like, “Hey, are there any other businesses doing this thing?” or “Is this URL available?” or “Can I get a retail store front in my town?” Whatever your thing is. It might be the most simple, unimpressive thing, but what I remind people all the time is the impressive things in life always start as unimpressive things.
Dave Ramsey started his business that is a multi-hundred million dollar business on a card table in his living room. Sara Blakely started Spanx by cutting the feet out of her pantyhose. We all start in unimpressive situations, but if you take that tiny baby step, what happens is you get confidence and momentum. And that fuels you taking the second tiny baby step and the third tiny baby step and the fourth and so on.
So I don’t know what your idea is, and you don’t have to follow the Business Boutique book, and you don’t have to follow that plan. If you want that, that’s there. But all I really care is that you take a step, because one step will fuel your confidence and momentum for the second. So maybe it’s a Google search. Maybe it’s reaching out to a key relationship in your area. Maybe it’s looking for production for whatever type of product you’re gonna create. It doesn’t matter.
But if I was gonna challenge your listeners with “Here’s your takeaway. Here’s your homework for today. Figure out what your first baby step is. What is the lowest hanging fruit? What is the quickest win that you could do today, that though it may be very small will fuel the second step?” Then that person says, “Hey you need to call my friend. She’s a graphic designer. Hey I’ve got an attorney. Hey you know what, so and so has some unused space, and you can totally rent that.” And the ground starts to move beneath you. But it doesn’t happen if you don’t take that first step. So I know it sounds so simple and basic, but taking action is the best thing you can do because it begins to fuel more action.
It also, by the way, is the best way to combat fear. The antidote to fear is action. Nothing will silence your fear of doing the thing like doing the thing. So go do the thing. Figure out what your baby step is and take that tiny step today.
Pat: I love that. We heard something similar when we had James Clear, New York Times bestselling author of Atomic Habits—how we have these big goals that we have and big habits that we wanna form. It’s that little tiny, mini baby step that actually gets that going. So if you wanna start running every day, just make a habit of having your shoes ready when you wake up, right there in front of you. And that’s it. So it’s the very same exact thing like we’re talking about with entrepreneurship.
Christy: And you look up one day a year from now and you’re going, “Oh my gosh, I’m doing it. I’m doing it.” But it didn’t happen with this giant terrifying leap. It didn’t happen with this big huge Jerry Maguire moment: You walk out, you grab the goldfish and say, “Who’s with me?” from your corporate job. It doesn’t happen like that. Usually it happens with one little Google search and setting your shoes out and making that contact. And then you look up and you go, “Oh my gosh, I’m doing it.” But you have to do those small things in order for the big thing to happen.
Pat: Another important component of building your business, as you’ve mentioned earlier and as I share all the time, is the conversations and the relationships that you’re building from the start with your audience, your prospective customers, and also other people in your space. You seem to have this really amazing knack of listening to your target audience. What mechanisms do you have in place to be able to listen to them?
Christy: That’s good. Well I will say I talk to them every day in different ways. Now you’ve challenged me on this Pat, because you actually call your listeners—
Pat: I do.
Christy: Which I think is fascinating, and I always say I’m gonna do it and I haven’t done it. But I need it.
Pat: Baby steps, just one person, right?
Christy: There you go. So here’s what I do. I have a coaching group called the Business Boutique Academy and this is my subscription site. So I train them through weekly trainings, and then we have a regular check-ins throughout the month through live video feedback. So I actually just had that this morning. And I have ’em on a regular basis. But this gives me ongoing feedback to hear how they’re doing, what their frustrations are, what they’re going through. And so I very much know the voice of my customer, because I talk to them all the time and so on, through live chats and that kind of thing. And then of course at events. You’ll talk to people after events.
So mine is more informal and organic. I wouldn’t say I have a structure in place to hear from them. But here’s what I think is even maybe more important than having specific structures in place. You need to do it, but how you do it, I don’t really care. What matters is that you actually pay attention to what they’re saying. And don’t just take it at the surface level. Think like the most curious person you can be, and ask, “Why” and “Tell me more about that” and “Why?” and dig.
So if your customer or your client or your listener or our fan, whoever, says something, don’t just take it at the surface level and write it off. “Well here was their answer. Here’s their feedback on this product” or whatever their experience is. “So, tell me more about that. Well why was that? Well how’d that make you feel?”
I mean, I’m a coach by training and also I’m just very intuitively good with people and picking up on nuances. But if you can learn these skills of asking the right questions and digging with people, you will get incredible insight about who they are and how they think and what makes them tick. And you will begin to understand not just how they’re wired, but you will understand how to speak to them.
Because so many people just operate at the surface level. “Well I need more money for my business, so I’m gonna go make more sales.” And they stay in the cycle at the surface, but if you can get to lower surface—”Well why do you need more money? Well what’s the why behind your business? Well what’s driving you? Well who’s your ideal customer? Well what will be your ideal future in five years?”—and you start to dig a little bit deeper into some of these questions with your clients, then you can have fewer conversations that are way, way, way more insightful and give you more takeaways of what you need to change about your business or build about your business, or how to speak to them and how to market to them.
Pat, I drive my content team crazy, because they will send me some marketing copy and I’m like, “Oh no, we don’t talk to them like that. No, no, no that doesn’t connect with them.” Because I know them, because I’ve talked to them all the time. So I think it’s just really important to understand and that’s the reason I know what I know about fear, because I’ve heard them. They may tell me “Well I can’t start my business because it’s already too saturated. There’s too many people doing it.” “Well tell me, why is that? Well what’s your business? Well is anybody doing it in your town? Well can anybody do it like you do it?”
When you dig, you start to realize, oh it’s just fear. And so you will get such incredible insights from your market and you will have not only more tools in your tool belt for building your business and ammo for your marketing, you’ll also just build such a intimate relationship with them. It’s the reason that women that are part of Business Boutique will be like, “I feel like we’re best friends.” Well, because we are. That’s not a marketing technique. That’s not manipulation. I really know you. And I really love you. And I really care about your success. And I will do anything I can to help you succeed. And she knows that, and she feels that.
So your relationship with your customers becomes so much more intimate and special. They’re more loyal customers. They’re gonna spread word about you. So it’s good for them and good for you when you really take the time to ask the right questions, and just gather insights. Don’t just get their answers. Gather insights about who they are and why those things are true for them.
Pat: Be genuinely curious, that’s what you said. And I think that’s really the secret, especially if you are doing research with your audience. Be curious, and that’s going to define what those follow-up questions are gonna be. For me as a podcaster, I always approach every interview as the very same way. Be curious. We didn’t write these questions down ahead of time. I knew these topics that we were gonna discuss, but these follow-up questions are literally as a result of just me wondering more.
And the next thing I’m wondering about, Christy, to transition back to some of the things that you mentioned earlier, is you said that this is very women-specific, but I know I also have this issue, so it’s likely universal for many. Maybe it’s an introvert thing, I don’t know, but you had mentioned you are somebody who loves to show people how to be a salesperson without being too sell-y. What are some strategies that you have to ensure that when we are offering our solutions to our audience, we can get in front of them but not get in their faces, I guess?
Christy: Yes, so here’s what’s interesting—and I actually listened to a podcast on a run, this was like a while ago, probably a year or more ago, where you were on a podcast with Chalene Johnson. And I think either she was on yours, or you were on hers, I can’t remember. But y’all were talking about sales. It was so good, it was just brilliant, I loved it.
But this is such a great thing to talk about, because I don’t know if you’re like this, Pat, but I teach on things that I struggle with myself. So I don’t teach because, oh my gosh this is so easy for me, I teach because these are things I’m living out and learning myself.
And here’s what I’ve noticed when it comes to sales. And it doesn’t matter the business, it doesn’t matter your personality style. Sales is a skill. It’s a skill that can be learned. So it doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert, extrovert. I use the example of my husband. My husband Matt is so opposite from me, Pat, like a lot of married couples are. He is introverted, quiet, steady, patient. All the things that I am not. And you know what? After seven months of pursuing me and seven months of me turning him down, that man closed the sale. I’m his wife, we are so happy. It doesn’t matter your personality styles. You can develop the skill of confidence and influence.
And I think what it comes down to for a lot of people is that they have had a bad experience with sales, and that shaped their idea of sales and so they don’t wanna be anything like that. But the unfortunate thing is that’s not sales. You know, that’s certainly not good sales. So instead of thinking of sales as a sleazy salesperson or a used car salesman or you gotta be pushy and aggressive and twist people’s arms—if that’s your idea of sales, of course you don’t wanna sell. Of course you don’t. I don’t wanna be anything like that either.
But what I help people do is I help them reframe their ideas about sales, so instead of thinking of it as you’re gonna be pushy, aggressive and twist people’s arms, think of it as sharing your heart, sharing your story, influencing and serving. Now this sounds really simple but let me give you short examples of each.
Influence. How many of your listeners have a close friend? Well great, you influenced someone to let you in their inner circle. How many of your listeners, how many of you are married? Well great, you influenced someone to spend the rest of their life with you. That’s a big sale. How many of you, your kids ate their veggies last night? Great, you influenced your kids to eat their veggies. That’s a big sale. So it’s really the business of influence that you do all day every day anyway in something you believe in, like your kids eating their veggies.
It’s also sharing your heart and your story. When I did research years ago, I asked women how they felt about sales. And all of them said the same thing, “Oh, I don’t want to be pushy. I don’t want to be aggressive. I don’t want to get on people’s nerves.” Well then about ten minutes later in the interview I said, “Well tell me why you do this. Tell me a little bit about, what is this business do for you.” And there was an audible shift in the tone of their voice. And you could hear that they lit up as they described why they loved this.
One woman that was a photographer said, “Oh, I just love that I get to capture these moments and memories in families that they’re gonna treasure forever, from maternity photos to family fall photos to senior portraits. Like, I just love to be a part of capturing these moments forever.” One woman told me, she said she made handmade little girls’ dresses, and she said, “I love going to church on Sunday morning and seeing these little girls twirl around in the lobby, feeling so beautiful in a dress that I made them.” And Pat, as they told me that, I wanted to buy a little girls’ dress right there, and I don’t have little girls, Pat. Got little boys.
As you share your heart, the sale naturally follows. That is what is the most compelling form of sales, is sharing your heart, sharing your why, sharing your story. And if you really believe in what you’re doing, then that should be easy for you. And what I mean by that is if you’re focusing on what you can give, if you’re focusing on how you’re gonna help people, if you’re focusing on the difference you can make, and you really believe in that, which I do, then it becomes so much more easy to do. If someone comes to my book signing line at an event, says, “Hey,” you know, “Christy, here, sign my book, do you think it’s going to help me?” I’m not like, “Oh gosh, I don’t know. Toss up, fifty-fifty maybe.” No, I’m like “Of course it will help you. I can’t wait to watch you put this into practice. When you follow these steps, this will change your life and your business. I can’t wait to watch you win.”
I have aggressive confidence in belief in them. And they step into that. And they believe that, and they wanna prove me right and they wanna prove themselves right. And they then become that. But it all comes because I believe deeply, from my gut, from my heart, I believe deeply the fact that this works. Now, if you’re in a business, and you don’t believe that what you do helps people, then you probably need to get into another business.
But what I’ve noticed is we often focus on what we get, not on what we give. “I’m gonna get money, I’m gonna get followers, I’m gonna get a sale.” Well if that’s what you think about then of course you feel slimy. Don’t focus on what you can get. Focus on what you’re gonna give. You’re gonna give value. You’re gonna give life change. You’re gonna give solutions. You’re gonna give tools and help and products that help people. Everything from hair bows, where moms wanna put hair bows on their little girls—people need that, that matters. I didn’t have hair till I was three years old, Pat. Hair bows mattered for me as a two year old.
So it’s just amazing how when you focus on what you can give, and you share your heart, and you share your story, and you show up and you serve people, that’s where the best sales naturally happen. If you’re focused on what you can get and how you can get money and get a sale and get more followers, people will feel that. And it’s not fun for you, and it’s not fun for them. So I just encourage you to flip the script and think of it as serving and sharing and what you’re giving to them. And man, it becomes so much easier, and it becomes authentic. And it becomes something that, believe it or not, they will thank you for it. They will say thank you so much for writing this book. Thank you so much for that podcast. Thank you of that hair bow or that swim lesson or that graphic design service. Thank you so much for whatever that . . . because you helped them. And there’s a value on that, and if you focus on how you’re helping people, it becomes really easy to sell.
Pat: So for the timid listener right now, let’s imagine they flip the switch, and they’re gonna tell themselves, “All right, I’m gonna be confident ’cause I know what I have will help people. This is the angel on the left shoulder that’s speaking in their ear. But then at the same time, the devil goes, “You’re just faking it. You can tell yourselves these things, but this is not real.” I just wanna swat that thing away.
Christy: Yes, totally. So I will say this, one thing I wanna clarify when you talk about someone that’s timid, someone that’s an introvert—I wanna go ahead and speak to them really quickly, because I believe that god made you uniquely and perfectly like you. And you don’t have to be loud, talkative, extroverted. You don’t have to be someone that you’re not to lead a business. And you don’t have to be someone that you’re not to sell. You can sell in a way that’s true to you. You can sell in a way that’s one-on-one, and it’s quiet. And you build that deep relationship with that person before they buy from you. You don’t have to be all loud. You don’t have to be what you think of when you think of salespeople.
So I just wanna go ahead and give your listeners that might be more quiet permission to be true to them, ’cause that’s the best business, that’s the best sales, it’s the best serving when you are who, I believe, god made you to be, which is in your natural style. So again, sales is a skill. It’s a skill you can learn, and then you just adapt it for your style. Whatever is comfortable for you.
Now let’s talk back to the angel/devil analogy here. If you have that at first . . . and the example I always used is sales is a muscle. Confidence is a muscle. If you never exercise it, well it’s a little weak at first. It’s a little wobbly. That’s okay. But the more that you exercise it, the stronger that muscle becomes and the easier it becomes. So the first few times, you’re gonna have that voice in your head that says, “You’re faking it. You’re a fraud. Who are you to do this? They don’t like you. They’re gonna talk about you about—” All this ridiculous voice of fear.
And if you can do it anyway, if you can still have that conversation, hold your head high, throw your shoulders back, say the things that you practiced in front of your mirror, in front of your dog, whatever. If you can force yourself to do it one time after another, over time that confidence becomes authentic. That muscle becomes stronger. What I say all the time is fake it until you feel it.
Pat, the first time I walked on a stage as a professional paid speaker was to 1,000 people, I was scared out of my mind, shaking in my shoes. And I felt like the biggest fraud in the entire room. But I just faked it. I acted like I was excited to be there, and I did the best that I could. And now, after years of doing this, I really am excited to be there. But of course you’re scared the first time, you’ve never done it before. Of course you’re scared the first time you make a sales presentation, you’ve never done it before. Of course you are.
I know this sounds so simple, but just fake it. Pretend like you’re excited to be there. Smile, even if you’re shaking, just do it scared. You don’t have to wait until you’re not scared to do the things that you wanna do. You just do it scared. You walk on the stage, you do a Facebook Live, you launch the ball, you ship the product, you make that key call to that person you wanna reach out to, take that client to coffee, whatever. You just do it scared. And it’s in doing it that you gain the confidence, through the reps, that that muscle gets stronger and it becomes easier. At first, that voice will be loud, but if you can just do it anyway, even though you got that voice in your head . . . you just do it anyway. It’s amazing how over time that becomes proof and it’s, like I said, nothing will silence your fear of doing the thing like doing the thing.
So do the thing. If it’s a sales call, if it’s a presentation, you just do it, and then you’ll strengthen that muscle and it will, I promise you, it will get easier.
Pat: Wow. We’re gonna clip that and share with everybody on Instagram and all of Twitter, ’cause that’s amazing. And if any of you are listening to this and you know that there are other people in your life who can benefit from hearing these messages from Christy today, please share this episode. This is fantastic. And Christy, I just wanna wrap up by saying I appreciate you so much. I’m so thankful to have you in my life as a leader and a prime example of somebody who’s leading their tribe in the right way. And I’d love for you to speak to the audience now and tell them where they can go get more info and encouragement, inspiration, and information from you.
Christy: Well thank you, Pat. You know I’m just such a huge fan of yours. I was so thrilled when we had you at Business Boutique, and you’re such a part of our Business Boutique family. And I love what you do. You’ve challenged me in so many ways, from listening to my listeners, to just even some of the tactical ways you lead your business, and you do it with such humility and class.
Pat: Thank you.
Christy: And I’m so, so grateful for you, and thanks for the opportunity. This has just been so much fun. BusinessBoutique.com is really where everything is. So we’ve got the Business Boutique podcast, we have the Business Boutique Academy, the book. We’ve got a couple courses on helping people find the rad business idea, or a deep dive on social media, and just blogs and encouragement to help them make money doing what they love. And then on Instagram @ChristyBWright and Twitter and then Facebook is @OfficialChristyWright.
So I’m all the places you are, just hanging out trying to help people. So I’m just so, so grateful to get to hang out with you Pat. And I love what you do in this space, and we’re such kindred spirits in this space. I love getting to partner with you and help people.
Pat: Thank you. I appreciate you, and we’ll have all the links and everything in the show notes I’ll direct you to in just a minute. But Christy, thank you so much. Have an amazing day. Keep doing what you do. It inspires me, and it inspires tens of millions of others as well. So keep up the great work. Thank you.
Christy: Thanks Pat.
Pat: All right, I hope you enjoyed that episode with Christy Wright. For all the links and where you can go find her, her book and her event, and all the amazing things that Christy has going on, you can go to SmartPassiveIncome.com/session362. That’ll take you to the show notes page.
I’d love to hear a comment from you as well on what you think about this topic. If you have something to say about it, I want you to tell me in the comments section. SmartPassiveIncome.com/session362.
You know I tend to over the years . . . I mean it’s been ten years of doing business. I tend to very much avoid a lot of the more controversial or potentially controversial—and this wasn’t controversial, in my opinion. It was just a lot of great discussions on something. But topics like this, and especially politics and religion and those kinds of things, I tend to just avoid those conversations because I don’t want to stir up any conversations that may not belong on my platform, and just would deter us from actually doing what we need to do.
However, I do think that this is a really important topic. And I’m thankful to have this conversation here on this platform. Again, I’d love to know what you think, and make sure you go check out Christy’s stuff. All the links and mentions and whatnot you can find at SmartPassiveIncome.com/session362.
Thank you so much. I appreciate you. If you have any other ideas for kinds of topics that I should be talking about that perhaps I’ve been trying to avoid in the past, let me know. I do know that one of those topics is on less of a more controversial front, but more of a just avoiding because it is a difficult thing to talk about, is the sort of really messy part of starting a business. The incorporating your business, the business bank accounts. A lot of those sort of “Okay, as a business owner, these are the things you have to know beyond your product and your market.” Accounting, taxes, those kinds of things, which I’ve always tried to avoid because I don’t want to get in trouble for saying the wrong thing. But I think it’s important that somebody step up and actually share these things, and I’m really thankful to have a COO and a CFO, Matt Gartland, who you heard on the show in January. He’s stepping up. And he’s gonna share a lot of thoughts with you in the future here on the podcast, on the blog, and perhaps other ways down the road, on dealing with the sort of unsexy side of business. And I can’t wait to share those things with you.
So that’s kind of the things that I want you to come up with for me and for my team, that we can better help you with. So let us know what we can do to better serve you and again, thank you so much for being a part of Team Flynn. You’re amazing. Team Flynn for the win.

Car insurance? Do they check your credit rating?
I have just phoned to change my insurance over to another car, and was told twice that it was declined - firstly, he said due to the group of insurance, and secondly, I was told that the operator had a system problem. I am a bit concerned as I know my credit rating is bad at the moment, but I am trying to better it, and I don't know if this is why my insurance was declined? I thought that they had to tell you if they carry out a credit search, but nothing was mentioned and I don't particularly want it going against me if it was searched twice. I have paid my insurance for the year, and was going to pay any extra instantly, so there would be no need for a credit search as far as I can see. Car Insurance for Tourists?
I bought a new car in Germany. It is insured through its manufacturer. I then left Germany and went to another country to work and live. Since I wanted to keep the car, I drove it to my new home! How should one deal with this situation where there might even be language barriers between the two drivers and the forms they have to fill in? Thanks in advance

Can my car insurance rate go UP if they pay for the medical bills of the other person in the car accident?
Ok so I was involved in a car accident November 10,12, I was at fault because I hit the car in the back, the guy just literally stopped and obviously even if you are right about saying that the other driver stopped too fast for you to stop, when you hit a car in the back (most of the time) you are at fault of the accident.Either way, my insurance paid for his damage ($2,000 worth) and I took my ticket to court, there I only paid for court fees but no points. Today, June 02,13 (almost 7 months after the accident) I get a letter from a lawyer( lawyer of the guy I hit in the previous accident) saying he is asking for a $10,000 on medical expenses,it says I should send the letter to my insurance company as soon as possible, which I will do tomorrow but my thing is, I don't want my insurance rate to increase, it already increased after the accident (was $130, now $170) so I'm just asking, will the insurance company approve paying for his medical expenses even if he is self-employed as a driver of big trucks (I guess he also lift heavy furniture in order to work) and has diabetes ( he was ketotic at the time of the accident, the guy is in his 60s)?? And if the insurance approves paying ( guessing he has all the medical papers in order) will my rate increase too? Again?? I have full cover in my car, and it also includes medical bills. I had to pay $1000 of deductible in order to fix my and his car so pretty much I don't want to loose more money is just horrible I am 21,full time student with full time job! Yes,is possible to do both things but honestly I don't think this is fair anymore, the guy wanted to leave at first and not only that he is sick (diabetes) and he was very rude at first but then the police ask him if he was ok and he said yes so I don't understan this... :(. Me and the women were getting ready to take off, but a cop came up, and said that because it was a main road, that we needed to fill out an accident report. I then looked at a 1.4l vauxhall corsa, 1993, which was still at least 1000 to insure. yet my friend managed to get insurance on her own policy for the same 1.4l corsa, at around 700 a year, and she had only been driving an additional 2 months more than me. and thats on the same insurance company too. Confused.com form for car insurance?
Im looking to purchase an audi s3 and im 21, however the insurance is too much so what im thinking is to buy the car and then insure the car to my dads name so he can drive it for a year or 2 (I WONT BE INSURED ON IT) until i can be insured on it. My question is, on confused.com it asks when did you purchase the vehicle? And if i put say 2 years ago the price of the insurance drops compared to if i brought it say today. Is it ok to do this? When they ask when did you purcahse the car can i say 2 years ago? Hope this makes sense if you use confused.com you will know what i mean. Im really enthusiastic about audis and in particular the s3, im looking to join the members club online. So will this work to lower my insurance when i want to insure myself on it? Also what will be the deal with the registered keeper and owner of the vehicle? Would that be me? Even though my dad would be the person insured on the vehicle? I know im trying to obtain cheaper insurance but if i dont drive it for 2 years i dont see a problem in this. any ideas? What if my dad is the registered owner then registers it to me in 2 years will i have to say i brought the car 2 years ago or when my dad registers it over to me?""

My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition. The damage is to the drivers side rear panel which is now rubbing something when I turn either way or go over any kind of bump in the road. The estimate does not consider repair for that since that could not be seen by looking at the vehicle. They are also saying the paint can't be matched perfectly because of the fading caused by sun and weather over the years. With everything considered my resale value is not good. I did want to sale this car at some point and get newer car.""

My dad is pondering whether to go privately and pay the learner the money, or go through the insurance I have. His main concern is that if I go through insurance, then when I pass, my insurance price will be a lot higher than without. I cancelled my car insurance with liberty mutual about a year and a half ago. I owed them about $700 which I payed off a few weeks ago. Depressed mom felt distant even when kids cried. But then a ‘gift’ from aunt changed her life
By age 17, a deep pit of depression had taken over my existence. Like an empty carcass, I had lost any spark of life. I felt doomed, as though the future was dark and there was no way out, and these thoughts terrified me. I always blamed myself, tormenting myself for being useless. Age 17 should be a beautiful and lively time for any young woman, but I was trapped in a desolate wasteland of misery and despair, just waiting for death to come.
A Tumultuous Childhood
Looking back, my emotional instability started in childhood. When I was a toddler, I was sent to live with my grandparents because my parents had to work in another province far away. They came back to visit me just once or twice a year. Though my grandparents loved and cared for me, I couldn’t get over the grief from the loss of my parents. My grandmother told me that as a little girl I used to cry all the time because I missed my parents so much.
When I was older, I was reunited with my parents, but it wasn’t the happy, cozy home I had imagined and yearned for. I often witnessed their struggles, fights, and seething resentment toward each other. I was haunted by the conflicts between them, but also obsessed with it. As soon as they started fighting, I would get a sick feeling in my stomach. I became extremely anxious and couldn’t stop thinking about it.
When I was 12, my parents finally divorced and I was utterly devastated. At age 15, I started having insomnia and mental issues. I was taken to a mental hospital where I was diagnosed with hysteria and paranoia. I was put on medication but it didn’t help.
As depression took hold in her teenage years, Hang became increasingly isolated.
By age 17, the depression really began to set in. I would sit in a corner by myself and avoid contact with anyone. Steadily, the depressive episodes began to occur more frequently and last longer, each one about 12 days. When it came, I just lay on my bed with glazed eyes, feeling indifferent and numb. I didn’t want to do anything, and couldn’t even if I wanted to. I was engulfed in darkness without a way out. I blamed myself and really wanted to end my life.
Finding Love Brings a Ray of Light, But Not for Long
I met my husband in a twist of fate. One day, I lost my identity card and he was the one who found it. He went through great pains to return it to me. From the first time I met him, I felt that he was a decent and stable person. He had a good job, and seemed very kind and considerate.
We started dating, and soon he asked me to marry him. Even though I was said to be pretty among the village girls, I was surprised that such a good man would want to marry me. Due to my severe depression, I was accustomed to rejection—by companies where I had applied for work, other men, even my family.
But my husband was different. He knew that the depression meant I couldn’t live a normal life, but he still wanted to marry me. His support so encouraged me that it motivated me to fight against the depression.
I thought he was a gift sent by God, a kind of compensation for my miserable life. The more I loved him, the more I wanted to be healthy so I could be a good wife and mother. However, this felt like a pipe dream when the depression came. Whenever it hit, I lost my awareness and perspective. I became closed off and emotionless. Even when my young daughter cried, I felt distant and unmoved.
The debilitating depression left Hang lifeless, unable to perform simple household chores or take care of her children.
If it weren’t for my husband’s encouragement and care at a time like that, I would no longer be alive. However, as grateful as I was to him, I knew he could not fix me. The real solution was yet to be revealed.
A Turning Point
One day, during one of my depressive episodes, my aunt came to visit. As we talked, she told me about a Chinese meditation practice called Falun Dafa, or Falun Gong, which she said would be beneficial for my mental and physical health. She told me if I could practice the qigong-style exercises of Falun Dafa and improve my personal behavior in compliance with its principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance, my depression would disappear. She said Falun Dafa was a high-level self-cultivation practice of the Buddha school—a traditional Chinese practice handed down from ancient times that opens up a path to one’s true self.
When I heard all this, I laughed because I didn’t believe it. I thought that if modern medicine failed to treat me, how could this? I knew of other Buddhist practices that involved people preparing offerings for some rituals that cost a lot of money but were of no use. In my mind, it was a kind of superstitious activity. Also, I didn’t have a good impression of my aunt because I was told by other relatives that she was shrewish and difficult.
But as the weeks passed while she stayed at our home, I found the opposite was true—she was considerate and helpful, and the way she behaved was calm, gentle, and mindful. She was completely unlike what people said, and I felt I could open up to her. Curious, I asked her why people spoke badly of her.
She told me she used to be bad-tempered and argumentative because she worked as a broker dealing in high-interest loans. But after she started practicing Falun Dafa, she quit that job. She felt it didn’t comply with the principles of Falun Dafa because it hurt many people by forcing them into bankruptcy. Through practicing Falun Dafa, she said she learned how to be compassionate in the face of disputes and competitiveness, rather than being aggressive toward others.
Her behavioral changes surprised not only her family but herself as well. As she practiced the Falun Dafa exercises and meditation and improved herself by following the teachings, all of her illnesses such as sinusitis, cervical spondylosis, and spina bifida occulta gradually disappeared, too. That was why she recommended the practice to me—she had experienced the benefits for herself. I was really touched by her story.
From Misery to Happiness
Intrigued by my aunt’s experience, I decided to read the book “Zhuan Falun,” the main teachings of Falun Dafa. At first, I was a bit reluctant because I didn’t believe my mental illness could ever be cured, but I kept trying because I didn’t want to disappoint her. I also didn’t have anything to lose.
At first, I didn’t understand much, but the more I read, the more I became fascinated with the principles of self-cultivation. This book also seemed to explain everything about life and the universe. Day by day as I read, I began to experience feelings of ease, comfort, and happiness—unusual for me, to say the least!
Then one night, something even more remarkable happened. I couldn’t sleep, so I started reading “Zhuan Falun.” Suddenly, my brain had a sense of being “woken up” and I had a strong urge to do housework. This was unfathomable, as for years my depression rendered me incapable of doing physical work. But that night I got up and started doing chores. I cried in happiness.
It seemed the depression was beginning to lift. Gradually, I became a different person as I was released from my physical, mental, and spiritual prison. Being able to live a normal healthy life brought me great joy. I was able to start having self-respect, and believed I could live well and be content. Instead of suicidal thoughts, I imagined a future filled with righteous thinking, love, and happiness—something I had once thought impossible.
As I continued practicing, I realized that assimilating with the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance as explained in “Zhuan Falun” was the key to becoming a good person, to be truly healthy inside and out, and to reaching higher levels of spiritual enlightenment.
Learning from Setbacks
There were times, however, when negative behavior such as anger, jealousy, or greed bubbled to the surface, and this would trigger the depression again, although it was much weaker. When I would look within as required by the Falun Dafa teachings and recognize my mistake and strive to improve, the depression would lift in a few days. This is the process of self-cultivation in everyday life—fixing and improving my personal character and behavior when I run into conflicts or difficulty.
Once, after quarreling with my husband and yelling at my children, I felt ashamed when I remembered the principles of Falun Dafa—that anger is from the dark side of human nature and acts as a barrier to uncovering my true self, which is kind, compassionate, and tolerant. But at first, I couldn’t identify and eliminate the root of it, nor show forbearance and compassion to my husband and children. I was often too selfish.
After that quarrel, the depression came back and tortured me for days. I felt like I was frozen. But as soon as I became determined to eliminate my anger and related negative emotions, I felt calm and at peace. This was a profound experience, and a chance for me to give up long-standing bad habits.
I was so thankful to Falun Dafa, which helped me gain not only good health but also the ability to recognize and embrace my positive true self, instead of staying stuck in selfishness and anger.
A Happy Family
Falun Dafa has benefited my three children as well. They are all healthy, good-natured, and obedient. They listen to the teachings and practice the exercises every day with me. Our family life is warm and harmonious.
People rarely believe I am the mother of three kids. They say I look too young. I don’t feel pride when I hear this, but instead feel happy and extremely lucky due to my good fortune and being given a second chance at life. When I think of my old depressed and suicidal self, it seems like a faraway dream.
I have no way to thank my aunt sufficiently for introducing me to this amazing practice. Cultivation in Falun Dafa has brought me good health and true happiness. It not only saved my life but gave me spiritual fulfillment, showed me the true meaning of life, and enabled me to be responsible to my family and society.

T. Creative Investigation – First Draft
Creative Investigation
As part of my study of Walt Disney Studios focussing on the representation of social class, I have analysed the films of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Mary Poppins (1964), and Aladdin (1992). I focused on these films as I wanted to determine how the studio’s representation of social class has changed over time. I chose three films each from a different Disney era, to compare how representations develop. I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, due to this being from the Disney Golden Age (1937 – 1942), and especially as it was the first feature length animation made. I then chose Mary Poppins, from the Disney Silver Age (1950 – 1967) and Aladdin, from the Disney Renaissance (1989 – 1999). All of these films show visual representations of social class, and I will be focussing on how these have developed over time as society changes.
Hypothesis: How has Disney’s representation of social class developed over the past 80 years – considering representations from ‘Snow White’ (1937), Mary Poppins (1964), and Aladdin (1992)?
To structure my research and essay, I will be using these subtopics:
· Social/economic status
· Work/labour
Primary Sources
· Aladdin (1992). Directed by Ron Clements, John Musker. [Film]. Walt Disney Studios.
This film shows the story of a “street rat” who falls in love with a princess, showing a contrast and comparison of opposite social classes. This film is also from Disney’s Renaissance era, so it will show a later, more developed representation of social class.
· Mary Poppins (1964). Directed by Robert Stevenson. [Film]. Walt Disney Studios.
I have chosen this film because it is set in London, so it shows the difference in social class in England. It is from the Disney Silver Age, so it shows an earlier idea of how social class is represented in Disney films. This film is different from my other chosen films as it is live action. However, it does contain a small sequence of animation.
· Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Directed by William Cottrell, David Hand, Wilfred Jackson, Larry Morey, Perce Pearce, Ben Sharpsteen. [Film]. Walt Disney Studios.
This film I have chosen because as Disney’s first feature length animation, it shows the earliest representation of social class. This means that I can compare it to my other films to show the development of representation of social class in Disney films.

FILM 1: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
In the late 1930s, America was deep into the Great Depression. After the boom of the 1920s and the stock market crash of 1929, it was difficult to get a job and many people ended up poor. Many Americans dreamed of a better life with equal opportunity. Otherwise known as the American Dream. Banks closed, and businesses and industries were affected. During the Great Depression, Walt Disney made cartoons to bring joy and happiness to those suffering in 1930s America. His first unqualified success, Mickey Mouse, inspired people to cheer on their own success as well. By 1935, Mickey Mouse had become a merchandising phenomenon. Mickey Mouse became an increasing global business, and even kept companies from going bankrupt. Some argued that Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney buoyed Americans through the Great Depression, having a positive effect throughout the economy of the 1930s. Because of Disney’s fortunes through Mickey Mouse, it allowed him to make a full feature length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). With the film taking years to make, and its enormous budget for a film back then, ‘Snow White’ was convinced to be “Disney’s Folly” as people were unsure Disney would make any money from the film. However, the film ended up grossing at $21.8 million worldwide in 1937. One of the animators, Frank Thomas, who worked on ‘Snow White’ explained in the Disney documentary Frank and Ollie (1995) what it was like working for Walt Disney in the 1930s. He said “The idea of bringing a character to life began to really fascinate me, so I took the try out at Disney’s and got hired…and…pay check $17 a week. But you know, this is Depression..’34. There weren’t many jobs around, in fact the only jobs that I heard of were either Disney’s or the WPA.”
Social/economic status
Even though the economy in America in the 1930s was at breaking point, and millions of people were unemployed, Disney represents social/economic status in
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
to show that climbing the social ladder is easy. In the film, Snow White sings the song “Someday My Prince Will Come” which includes the lyrics “And away to his castle we’ll go To be happy forever I know”. The fact that Snow White sings a song about waiting for her Prince to take her away, shows how Disney started to show the idea of a princess needing a prince to make her rich and to live happily, right from the start. This is linked to gender and to social/cultural/political contexts too, as 1937 is pre-1960s feminist movement so females were typically represented in film as dependable and just there to be pretty. On the other hand, this links to the Great Depression and the American Dream because it could symbolise how people wanted someone to take them away and make them rich, to make life in 1930s easier. When looking at a recent study on social class in Disney films and discovering that most Disney films have a main character who is wealthy (with other characters either upper or middle class), Daniel Bates, of The Mirror, said “compared to the real-world distributions of wealth, this means
that poorer characters were under represented.” This relates to my focal films because all three of my chosen films have central characters who are wealthy and either upper or middle class. These films have a limited amount of poor and working-class characters and present. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) the main character is upper class and the seven dwarfs are each working class. The class grouping of the characters is clear by costume. Snow White first wears rags with holes in her brown dress. This is because she is in the same scene as The Prince, and needs to show comparison against him by saying she
is lower class than him. The Prince is wearing blue, red and elements of orange/yellow. Blue connotes elegant, rich, sophisticated, old-fashioned, superior characteristics. Yellow is similar to gold, so it connotes wealth, success and status. Then, when Snow White is seen in a scene in the Dwarfs’ home, she is the character wearing blue, yellow and red. This is to show that she is of a higher class than the Dwarfs, because they are seen wearing matching clothes
to show they are all part of the same working class. This could be considered as a uniform. Snow White is also wearing bright colours when she is inside the Dwarfs’ cottage, which is brown and dirty. This is to (again) show that Snow White stands out more because she is of higher class. The Evil Queen is another central character in the film who is of high social class. This is also recognised by the mise-en-scene as she wears a crown, and a lot of black and purple. These colours give connotations of royalty, nobility, luxury, power, elegance, formality, death, and evil. The over exaggerated use of costume through the crown, giant collar and cape shows her royalty status. This contrasts to Snow White because even though Snow White is a princess, she does not wear any type of crown. This shows that The Queen is higher up than Snow White. The two main characters of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) are Snow White and The Evil Queen. These two are both royalty and high class, which proves that the central characters in Disney films are always of a high class. However, the other main characters are the Dwarfs, who are working class, and there are seven of them, which shows that there are actually more low class characters in the film than the high class characters. On the other hand, the seven dwarfs could be seen as one character, as they are a collective group that are each associated with each other. There is never a scene in the film where only one dwarf is present. In the ScienceOfUs article, Jesse Singal states that “Rather than framed as irresponsible and authoritarian buffoons, most working-class characters are framed as warm and part of close-knit communities. For example, , the dwarves in Snow White work and play together, look out for each other, and exhibit a high degree of solidarity.” This shows that the Dwarfs are seen as a group, and potentially as one character because they all work as one and are similar to each other. The Dwarfs are also characters that bring up the idea that the social ladder is easy to climb when they sing the song “Heigh-Ho”. However, because of their level of class, they disagree that the social ladder is easy to climb. In the song, they sing “It ain’t no trick to get rich quick” which shows the opposite of the typical fast paced social ladder Disney usually present because the dwarfs know it isn’t that easy to just become rich overnight. On the other hand, children are the main demographic of Disney films, and they are likely to overlook this line or not notice it because it is just one line of a song with a fast melody, and is not shown visually on screen. Instead, Disney visually show Snow White being rescued by her prince at the end of the film, showing that it’s easy to become involved with someone of a higher class, and climb the social ladder.
Work/labour
Disney films always represent the poorer characters to be perfectly happy with not having a lot of money and to enjoy their manual work. Gareth McLean wrote The Guardian, saying that in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) “Grumpy the dwarf is way too happy for someone who works in a diamond mine and lives in an overcrowded cottage”. Grumpy the dwarf is shown to be of working class,
through his costume being so similar to the other dwarfs, and the house he lives in. The dwarfs all live in a small cottage, which shows they are low class because there are seven people living there. The dwarfs also work in a mine, and are shown to be happy about this in their song “Heigh-Ho” where they sing “To dig dig dig dig dig dig dig is what we like to do”. This lyric demonstrates how the dwarfs enjoy hard labour, and don’t mind how hard the work is. The dwarfs also sing “But we don’t know what we dig 'em for” which shows how the dwarfs don’t even know why they have to do this work and don’t know who their boss is, therefore inferring that they do the manual work because they enjoy it. During this song, the dwarfs are lined in typical order of hierarchy. Each dwarf’s name represents his personality. Doc is considered the leader and hold authority over the rest of the dwarfs. Grumpy then comes next, as he often objects Doc’s decisions, suiting his personality, and name. Third is a dwarf called Happy, which reinforces the representation of the dwarfs being happy, content with their work, and labour as this scene shows the dwarfs on the way to work. Dopey is at the back of the line, as he is considered the lowest in terms of hierarchy. This character placement shows how each of the dwarfs rank in terms of social class within their own social group. Dopey is also mute, which reflects his personality as if he is so ‘dopey’ he doesn’t know how to speak, showing that Disney have ranked him as the lowest social class because he isn’t very smart. Dopey’s personality and social class is also represented through his costume. Although he wears a matching style of clothing to the other dwarfs, his clothes are noticeably larger and baggier, to show he is poor and seen as the least important dwarf. Snow White is also considered enjoying her manual work when she sings “Whistle While You Work”. All of the lyrics in this song demonstrate working is a joyful thing, and Snow White enjoys doing different labour when she has a song to sing to make everything seem bette
FILM 2: Mary Poppins (1964)
In the 1960s, Walt Disney was mainly focussing on his plans for Disneyland, so focus on the production of films was lost from him, and it was up to the animators and others that worked at Disney Studios to work on the films. The studio was also affected in the 60s by the death of Walt Disney in 1966.
Mary Poppins (1964) was the last full film Disney worked on before he died. The film had a budget of $6,000,000. It won 5 Oscars including Best Actress, Best Song, Best Musical Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. It was also the first Disney film to receive a Best Picture nomination. The film made $102.3 million in the box office, and Rotten Tomatoes scored it 100%. The American economy in the 60s took a different direction to previews years, concluding in the economy growing, more jobs created, and poverty reduced.
Social/economic status
Even though the American economy grew in the 60s and poverty was reduced, the film Mary Poppins (1964) still showed elements of poor people living in poverty. For example, the character Bert. Throughout the film, Bert speaks with a Cockney accent whereas the other characters speak very traditional English. These are put side by side with each other to show the juxtaposition of the characters’ social class ranking. The characters who speak very traditional English are a higher class than Bert the chimneysweep. This is also shown by costume design.
The higher class children and Mary Poppins wear bright colours, unlike Bert the poor, who wears extremely dark colours, along with dirt on his hands and face to show that he is of the lower working class. Mr. Banks is also never seen in anything but a suit, showing his high class as he works at the bank and earns a lot of money. The set and props also show the social status of the characters. The Banks’ live in a middle class house in Victorian London. In The Animated Man, it is said that “‘Walt got vibes off the props. As he walked around the set he said, […] ‘Let’s have the grand piano roll across the room and the mother catches it as she straightens the picture frame.’ ’” which shows how Disney wanted the props and set to be detailed to show the social status clearly. However, in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), the author of Mary Poppins says “Well it’s too grand….the Banks’s are, normal everyday sort of people, and this isn’t normal, this isn’t every day, they’re not aristocrats” which shows how Disney could have misrepresented the characters from the original stories. Also, in the Saving Mr. Banks e-Book, there is a copy of a letter that the real P.L. Travers (author of Mary Poppins) wrote to Walt Disney about the making of the film. In this letter she wrote “You once said you would film it in London and I very much hope that you will be able to because the whole secret of Mary Poppins is her Englishness” as well as “I fell as you do, that the setting should definitely be English and the over-all picture should be handled in a way to give it an English feeling.”. P.L. Travers was obviously very passionate about how the regional identity and social class of Mary Poppins should be portrayed, to make sure the right stereotype was exaggerated to the child demographic, to help them understand. The film also does the same thing displayed in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) as it lightly shows that climbing the social ladder is easy. Douglas Brode wrote in “From Walt to Woodstock – How Disney Created the Counterculture” “While each parent is off in the social world, Poppins whisks the children away to pastoral adventures. ‘Life’s a bloomin’ holiday with Mary,’ as one song suggests.” This suggests that the Banks’ parents leave the children to go and climb the social ladder as adults in the 19th century, and this is why the children need a nanny. Because the upper class adults are considered to spend their time in the film climbing the social ladder, Lilli Peterson of Refinery29 and Jesse Singal of ScienceOfUs speak of how the poor characters and working class characters are happier than the rich, and teach them how to be happier and accept their happiness for what they’ve got. Peterson says that “a cheerful Julie Andrews teaches her employers lessons about love and living life to the fullest, allowing her to be their emotional superior just as they’re her social superiors.” Showing how Mary Poppins is there to teach the higher class how to be happier. Singal explains that in Disney films “working-class characters “teach upper-middle-class and upper-class characters, mostly men, how to be warm and loving.” These characters have something that richer ones do not: some connection to warmth and empathy and humanity.” relating to Mary Poppins and Bert being there to change the ways of Mr. Banks, and not necessarily the children. This idea is also reiterated in Saving Mr. Banks (the film about the making of Mary Poppins) when Walt Disney says to P.L. Travers “It's not the children she comes to save. It's their father.”. In Mary Poppins (1964) the importance of social status and economic status is shown when the children and Mr. Banks are on their way to the bank and they pass a poor old woman asking for money to feed the birds. The children want to stop, but their father disagrees and thinks this is a terrible idea. He says to the children “Waste your money on a lot of rag-a-muffin birds? Certainly not.” Showing how he is concerned about giving money away and wants to keep it to himself in order to keep his social status.
Work/labour
The idea of poor people being too happy in Disney films is shown in Mary Poppins (1964) as well as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The main character to present this ideology is Bert, the chimneysweep. He sings a line in “Chim- Chim Cher-ee” saying “A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be” as well as “Nowhere is there a more happier crew”. This shows how he is happy with the work he has, and so are the other chimneysweeps, even though in the 1900s this occupation was dangerous. Mary Poppins also helps deliver this message to children when she sings the reprise, singing “When you’re with a sweep you’re in glad company”. Many people have noticed this in the film, and written about it. Some criticism includes “Poppins’ consort, Bert the chimney sweep, is delusional as he sings that he’s “as lucky as can be” when he’s working for a pittance in a service industry before the first world war.”. However, Gareth McLeasn from The Guardian, thinks that there is more to Bert’s character than just acting happy about his job. He says “So, yes, we might read chimney sweep Bert’s happy-go-lucky demeanour as sanitising poverty – and so reinforcing a conservative world view. But we might also read Bert as a character who knows that money doesn’t buy you happiness – which is, essentially, a liberal view.” Which delivers a different message to the child demographic: money doesn’t mean happiness. Mary Poppins is also a character shown to be happy about her work, when she sings “In every job that must be done there is an element of fun” in “A Spoonful of Sugar”. This is done to show children that they must find the fun in boring jobs and chores, as it happens in the scene when Mary Poppins is convincing the children to tidy their room. Disney also show this idea with Bert, as well as the dwarfs in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). This is pointed out by Douglas Brode in “From Walt to Woodstock – How Disney Created the Counterculture” saying “Though he [Bert] and his fellow workers are covered with soot, the children find them delightful, enjoying the experience of dancing with them. Like the dwarfs who whistled while they worked, this little community turns chores into pleasure owing to a positive attitude toward a hard job, well done.”.
FILM 3: Aladdin (1992)
America in the 1990s had an economic boom, with the economy growing throughout the years. The decade brought the Walt Disney Company the Renaissance era. After the deaths of Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney, the studio was left in the hands of Donn Tatum, Card Walker, and Roy Miller. However, the films released over an 18 year period from this change did not perform as well as previous films. Once the first film of the Renaissance decade was released, Disney had more successes than any other decade, changing the way they animated forever. The 90s was the decade Disney began to animate with computer animation (programming developed by Pixar), had bigger budgets for the films, and reinvented the cartoon with songs form as more of a Broadway style. Aladdin was released in 1992, the fourth film of the Disney Renaissance. In Waking Sleeping Beauty (2009) Don Hahn (Disney Animator and Producer) explains that “Aladdin opened on Thanksgiving weekend 1992 and was the first animated feature to gross over $200 million”.
Social/economic status
The fourth film from the Disney Renaissance conforms to typical Disney styles, showing a film with a princess, and showing the social ladder is easy to climb. Within the first 10 minutes of the film,
Aladdin (1992)
shows a song sung from the main character about how poor he is. The song includes lyrics such as “I steal only what I can’t afford (That’s everything!)” and “Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat”. The central character then says to his companion “I wonder what it would be like to live there, and have servants” when thinking and dreaming about being rich. At the end of the film, Aladdin has fallen in love with Princess Jasmine, representing Disney’s ideology of easily climbing the social ladder. However, one thing that is different in this film compared to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Mary Poppins (1964) is the fact that the rich and royal character is unhappy too, because in previous years, the rich characters have been represented to be happy with their class and social ranking. In the film, Princess Jasmine tells her father “Well maybe I don’t wanna be a princess anymore”. Lilli Peterson says “Both Aladdin and Princess Jasmine are unhappy and feel trapped in their lives, one by a lack
of money and social respect and the other by too much of both.”. This shows a development in social class representation in Disney films through the years. Although Disney have developed their representation of higher social status’ happiness, they still represent climbing the social ladder as easy. The Mirror (Daniel Bates) says “And movies like Aladdin, made poverty seem 'benign’ and that climbing the class ladder is not a hard thing to do.“ showing how being poor is a gentle and kind life. Disney also show children that the social class spectrum is quite narrow, showing you’re either very rich or very poor. Jesse Singal recognised that “Then there’s Aladdin, where as we all know the titular character starts out as a “street rat.” In that film, poverty is rather explicitly described as just the flip side of insane wealth” which could help show that the social ladder is easy to climb, because it’s short. The social class of the characters is clearly represented by costumes and set. Aladdin wears similar costumes to the people in the market place, but his show how he is the poorest of them all, because he has a patch on his trousers, and is bare foot.
The size of the fountain outside the palace shows how rich Princess Jasmine is, but also how little she feels with her role of the princess, reflecting her happiness. Princess Jasmine wears a lot of blue and gold, showing her wealth, just like Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). She also covers up these bright, wealthy colours with brown when she is wandering around the market place, to try and fit in with the poor stereotype.
Work/labour
Disney still presents poor people to be happy in their films even though there’s a 55 year difference between the first film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Aladdin (1992). The opening of Aladdin (1992) is the song “Arabian Nights” and a lyric that stands out is “it’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home” which shows how the poor life can be hard but still enjoyable. However, the film doesn’t show much of work being enjoyable, because none of the central characters actually have jobs. This relates back to the fact that Disney show only two ends of the spectrum: either really rich or really poor because Princess Jasmine is so rich she doesn’t need a manual job, and Aladdin’s job is being poor and stealing bread.
Overall, Disney studios have developed their representation of social class between 1937 and 1992, especially when representing the rich characters’ feelings and happiness. However, the studio still represent the poor characters to be happy with their work, and show that climbing the social ladder is easy. I think the representation of social class is easier for the studio to represent in live action films, as the signs of the representation in the animations can go overlooked. The main demographic of these films are also children, so the representation will not always be noticed by them, as they just want to enjoy the film. I think this is why the social class representation has not developed much, because Disney know what works well with their audience (as all three of these films were successful critically and financially) and continue to show this to make money.
Most of my secondary sources were articles, meaning not all of the information was reliable as some were opinions. However, a few of my secondary sources were documentaries made by Disney studios themselves, and most of my information of the representations came from the three focal films, making the information and quotes more reliable than the articles. I had a few limitations finding information at first, because Disney are a very prestigious company, meaning they don’t share a lot of their information, but there were a lot of opinions out there, because the company is so popular.

Car Insurance for Tourists?
I bought a new car in Germany. It is insured through its manufacturer. I then left Germany and went to another country to work and live. Since I wanted to keep the car, I drove it to my new home! For the first 3 months (I am told) I am still insured as a Tourist. But I wonder... Say I have an accident in this new country, we exchange insurance details, etc... Where should the other driver go to get his compensation and file his claim? Has anyone ever had an accident with, say even, a rental car from another country and found out that they live elsewhere and . . . How should one deal with this situation where there might even be language barriers between the two drivers and the forms they have to fill in? Thanks in advance

""Bike insurance idea, would it work?""
As you know insurance for a 600cc sports bike for a 17yr old (male) is extremely high (I was quoted 9000+), however you may of heard of fronting, (putting someone with lots more experience and age as the main driver and putting me (17yr old) as a second driver) this apparently greatly reduces the insurance cost, however is a form of insurance fraud and is illegal. But I thought of a plan... You see I have my heart set on a honda cbr600rr, it is much cheaper than a 125cc bike that I would buy new only to buy another bike a few years later thus deeming the 125 useless, but what if I got the 600 and did make my dad (who is much older and more experienced) the main driver and me the 2nd, but to avoid it being fronting, he could use it when i'm not and I could force him to ride somewhere so ultimately he would have used it more so it wouldn't be illegal right? By the way he mostly goes out at night so it would not interfere with my needs.""

How can I get car insurance on a car that my ex husband let my daughter borrow? The car is still in his name.?
My ex husband let my daughter borrow one of his cars. He lives in a different state. I had the car registered here in the state we live in, but now the insurance has expired and I can't seem to get insurance for the car now since the car is not in my name. I cannot get ahold of him at all.....phone is temporarity disconnected, etc., and I think he has not even been paying the payments on the car, since he has not been working for many months now due to the housing crisis in this country....especially the western part. I'm actually wondering why the re-po man hasn't come and collected the car yet. I will not let my daughter drive the car until it has insurance. It just sits in the driveway. She really needs a car to get to work now and it seems such a waste to have a perfectly good car just sitting there. Anyone know how I can get some insurance on this car? Or maybe should I call the bank that is financing this car and see if he is even making the payments? Would the bank let me buy the car at a huge discount if he has not been making payments? Motorcycle totaled with no insurance?

I need advice for my auto insurance claim! Please help!!?
I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients. I spoke to my insurance today and they said that all my medical is covered since I had that already in my plan (without it raising my premium) and that I should get a settlement ON TOP of paying for damages to my car and getting me a rental, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get taken for a ride. I've heard the horror stories of dealing with insurance companies. Any advice on what I should make a point of saying to the other insurance company, etc. Thanks in advance....""

How can I prevent this girl from completely taking advantage of my insurance company?
A few nights ago I accidentally brushed the side of my neighbor's car with my front bumper (cause she was parked like an idiot as usual). I'm taking full responsibility of it cause it's my fault and I have no problem with that. Initially I was going to pay for the scrape to be compounded out and whatever else was wrong as a result of me hitting it. However, when I spoke to her, she started pointing out a ridiculous amount of things: there's a scratch in addition to the scrape (ok, sure), she says I cracked her light (maybe I did, it's possible) but she's also saying that I caused her tire to pop out and that there's tread missing from it (which makes absolutely no sense because I didn't hit the tire or rim or wheel well at all). Basically, she expects a whole new paint job and a set of tires which is ridiculous for the small amount of damage that was done. I want to make sure she isn't trying to take advantage of my insurance company and cause my rates to skyrocket as a result. The car is a complete piece of sh*t and she doesn't take care of it at all - the paint's dull, the rims are rusted - and I think she's trying to fix these things by making it like they were a result of me hitting her. I have no problem at all taking responsibility for the damage I did, but I do have a problem with her making things up and trying to fix other issues through my insurance company. The last claims representative I spoke with told me that I would not be contacted by the adjuster at all since there is no damage to my car. Since she's going to be talking with the adjuster and I won't, I'm afraid she's going to exaggerate the amount of damage. Should I call my insurance company and tell them this? Will they care? What can I do?""

Affordable Health Insurance?
I was in a pedestrian accident earlier this year. The case has since been settled and I was awarded $25,000. That was the maximum insurance the driver had, after lawyer fees, etc., etc., I didn't end up with much. I am unable to work and have no health insurance. My back is still scarred. Everyday, all the time it aches. I stopped treating with the chiropractor because he was making me feel worst the entire 2 months I treated. I need prescriptions and medical attention period! I have about $4,000 left, but I am unemployed and do not want to continuously dip into my savings. Since my lawyer has been paid, I seem to be of least concern.""

i am 17 years old and I just got my license. I try to get some quotes under my moms name and it came out to be around 3000 to 5000, in other words, 2 to 4 grand every six month just for me. How much is normal teenager boy insurance rate it NY State? One of my friends(they are twins) and they pay 20 total under their parents insurance. They own really creppy car costs like 1700 but still I thought guys under 30 pay the most expensive rate in car insurance. What exactly is the average rate for teenager boy? I was wondering if anyone has any ballpark answer as to how much motorcycle insurance is at my age? every google search i do says you should ask your insurance broker , well i will, but i just want to see if its even worth looking at or if its going to be like $300 a month like car insurance. the bike would probably just be like a cheap used early 1990's bike, nothing special. thanks""

Another car insurance question to British drivers!?
My brother's car was written off yesterday [was the other party's fault]. He was told today the car wasn't redeemable so that's that! So he is waiting to see how much they are going to pay him for the loss, but the question is does he have to keep paying full comprehensive insurance when he no longer has a car to drive? Can he now pay a reduced rate until the insurance is sorted out? It seems unfair to continue paying out for fully comp insurance when there is no car to insure!""

Good Car Insurance Companies? For a young driver...?
I was wondering if anyone knew any cheap car insurance companies for a 17year old female? I've had a full licence since February of this year and was with Quinn-Insurance. I paid just over 2200 for a years insurance which runs out the end of next month. I know this is a good deal for a young driver but obviously I'd love cheaper lol. Any company names would be greatly appreciated for me to look into further.
""Car insurance just went up 30-50% in Cal, why would that happen ...?""
...if it were'nt as a result of more accidents, due to more populace/ people, poorer drivers, drivers who weren't licensed; don't know rules and laws of the road in this country, are stealing more vehicles, or just don't care what happens here. Think there's a correlation between the large population of illegals or ...that the folks of California are just becoming worse drivers all of a sudden? Just the start of what is going to be our future here in Cal/USA if we don't remove these people who have no investment or care about what goes on in Cal. or the US. Hint: 50% of criminals in California prisons are illegal aliens. In fairness; there are a small % of that 50%, who are not of Hispanic descent. Hmmmmm 50% increase in insurance? 50% of all prisoners are ...Must just be a coincedence.""
