○ the story of juniper soo's life starts strangely: behind the walls of a commune (later classified as a cult) to a nineteen-year-old runaway and the forty-five-year-old 'head' of said commune. it was there on a cloudy day in february her life would begin and would never cease it's extraordinarily odd path.

○  juniper doesn't talk much about her childhood because she doesn't remember much of it. trauma works in funny ways like that. she remembers her mother being her closest friend, that there were only a limited amount of books and media they were allowed to consume, and that the 'father' (her father) ruled with an iron fist. but again, a lot of it is fuzzy for her.

○ one memory that does stay with her is a childhood crush she had on one of the other girls in her commune's school. they were caught after playing 'house' with one another and an innocent kiss cost them thirty lashes. as she continues to question where her sexuality lies today, this story tends to pop up in her memory from time to time. she knows she is attracted to femme and masc people, but she's only ever been with masc people until recently. it's all still very new to her and the stinging memory of that day doesn't help the confusion.

○ at the age of seven, her mother was able to escape the commune with her thanks to the help of a delivery man who frequented the grounds: kenneth 'kenny' hughes. they snuck out after one of his runs, hiding amongst the boxes in the back of his truck. her mom went to the police to report his crimes, ones she still refused to explain to her young daughter, and the commune was soon investigated.

○ her mom and kenny continued to have a strong friendship over the years as he helped the soo's to settle in aurora bay. friendship turned in to dating and by the time juniper was thirteen, they were married. juniper adores kenny and vice versa. now that she's older and can comprehend more of the horrors he saved her from, she only holds the highest respect for her stepfather.

○ her birth father, lucius ira malone (later revealed to have been born david richard jackson) decided to take himself out before he was able to be prosecuted for his numerous crimes (some juniper still doesn't know the extent of to this day). though she feels anger at the childhood she missed out on, she feels nothing for the man who fathered her. he was never her father. if any one asks, kenny is her real dad.

○ being an isolated child for the first seven years of your life tended to turn you into the weird kid once juniper started public school. however, elementary school students are thankfully more forgiving and she soon found her groove. she even turned in to something of a social butterfly, constantly texting or talking to friends as adolescence hit.

○ ever since she was young, juniper has been singing. it started as a technique from her speech teacher to help quell a stutter she was left with after having delayed speech education growing up. but even as the stutter faded, there was nothing more juniper wanted to do than sing. esther quickly got her daughter into singing lessons and there was no looking back. every moment of her free time seems to be dedicated to her craft.

○ when juniper was fifteen, esther and kenny welcomed a beautiful baby girl named clover into their little family. juniper adores her baby sister, often calling her her baby. clover is her muse, her heart, her soul. she is absolutely the type of big sister who would kill or die for her baby sister.

○ juniper is a witchy girl! she will read your tarot after sage-ing your ex boyfriend out of your apartment and gladly send nothing but bad vibes his way ✌️

○ in her freshman year of college, juniper met a cute drummer and his bandmates. it seemed almost like a strike of pure fate that they crossed paths. they just so happened to be looking for a lead singer and she quickly jumped on the opportunity to audition. to her utter excitement, they were interested in her. the cute drummer (who se did eventually remember he went by harris(she's horrible with names)) seemed interested in more ways than one, much to her delight.

○ soon, her bandmates were her closest friends and harris was her boyfriend. juniper had never felt this way about another person. she swore she could spend every moment of the day talking about music and creating art with him (intermixed with moments of kisses, of course). he was not only the love of her life but her best friend; a true soulmate. harris was the only person she ever told about her past and many nights were spent sharing the hardships of life between them. she swore he was her forever. and with the contract and tour being offered, juniper just knew they would take over the music world together. how wrong she would be.

○  after harris' car accident, juniper started out a dutiful girlfriend: every moment spent by his bedside, making sure he had anything and everything to make his stay more comfortable, and consoling him any time doubt came creeping in. but the time kept ticking by and, much to her utter shock, a new contract soon came her way. a separate, solo contract. one that came with a huge advance. sure, they were interested in her more 'pop' stuff (demos she had made as a little side project from the band that had started out as simply an exercise in genre branching) but how could she say no? her parents would never have to worry about money again with this opportunity (she overheard their discussions after the lights went out), her precious clover could be set for life and chase any dream she had. juniper will never know why she left the way she did (a handwritten note and a picture of them with the words 'always love, always yours' written on the back left on harris' nightside table) and she will always regret not talking to him before she went to LA. but time can't be changed.

○ so, she got everything she wanted, right? her first album rose to a number 1, platinum album in a matter of months. juniper was named in billboard's 27 under 27 as 'a pop sensation for our generation' and 'a new reigning pop princess'. she was able to buy herself and her family houses in a gated community she had driven by hundreds of times and only fantasized about living in. little girls, ones that reminded her so much of clover, wrote to her about how she was such an inspiration and they wanted to be just like her. she was living a dream. but behind the scenes? it's been a struggle as she becomes more and more of a product rather than an artist. every project seems to come from her agent and her record company. every demo she sends in is manipulated and mangled beyond recognition. they say she'll have her 'indie, unplugged moment' soon, but soon never seems to come.

○ about a month ago, kenny suffered a mild heart attack while working around the house. though he has seemed to be able to walk away with only a diet change and some new medication, the doctors warned that it could only get worse with age. juniper had nightmares thinking of her being away if something happened and she couldn't be there physically with her family. so, with some begging and pleading, juniper has moved back full time into her barely used house in aurora bay with the promise of driving in to LA to work and doing a tour every year to year and a half. but now she is walking amongst the shadows of the past. what happens when she meets them face to face again?

honestly, I'm okay with spending money to get rid of ads my ad-blocker normally can, and I appreciate @staff giving us this option instead of making it a patreon clone. I pay for a subscription to Reddit and TVTropes and Dropout because I can afford it and I like to support websites I want to stay active. I'm actually even more willing to spend that money on Tumblr.

okay I know the popular conception of stede and lucius' relationship is a father/son thing but like, okay, I get it, and I'm here for it, but I also don't get that vibe at all.

like, I don't think lucius admires/looks up to stede in a parental way. he likes stede, he's supportive of stede, but personally I wouldn't call my dad a bizarre little man or ask him how his breakup is going. like, that's way too informal. that's more a relationship of equals than anything else.

nope. I think their relationship is actually elder gay/baby gay (in the sense of experience rather than chronological age). lucius has been out for years, he has a lot of experience in relationships, he is way more able to read relationships (e.g. knowing that ed and stede are flirting before they even realize they're flirting), and because of that he is extremely well equipped to give advice about navigating queerness.

stede, on the other hand, has just barely started to dip his toes in the gay pool. like regardless if you go with the theory that stede didn't even realize he was gay until he met ed or that he knew for years but couldn't acknowledge it openly until he met ed, stede has zero practical experience. he is, in his forties, experiencing a bunch of "firsts" that lucius probably did in his teens or early twenties. the entire emotional landscape is foreign to him (and I was going to make a joke about how pirating is also foreign to him but then I started thinking about how piracy in this show is a metaphor for queerness and that's a whole second essay)

basically I think lucius spent the first however-many weeks on board the revenge being like "oh my god this guy is a naive idiot but at least he's paying me," and then he heard nigel badminton joking about how he used to bully stede in school and his gaydar went off like mad, and at that moment his attitude changed to "someone needs to protect this naive gay idiot and that person is me" and that's where it is for the rest of the season.

AND THEN THEY HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE TEXTS AND OBJECT BEFORE THEY WERE ENTERED INTO EVIDENCE AND THEY DIDN'T. the unmitigated GLEE in bankston's voice when he's like "and as of two days ago, it fell free and clear into my possession, and that is how I know you LIED TO ME" is just fucking awe-inspiring. i love this man.

i feel like every activist should read about fruitlands.

fruitlands was a transcendentalist utopian commune founded in the 1840s. the founders (including louisa may alcott's dad) thought that the existing capitalist economy was evil: alcott described it as a tree “whose root is selfishness, whose trunk is property, whose fruit is gold." so they decided to create a commune that was completely divorced from the economy. like, their response to the "you say you're against capitalism but still participate in it! checkmate socialists!" people was literally "you're right, let's not!"

they refused to consume any materials or foods that couldn't be locally grown, like tea or sugar. they were also highkey vegan: not only was it immoral to eat animal products and use animals for leather and wool, but using animal labor or even using manure as fertilizer was forbidden. and they refused to trade for anything they didn't have within the commune because participation in an oppressive economy was bad, especially if it supported slave labor (ex: wearing cotton fabric).

it fell apart in less than a year because they didn't have enough food to survive the winter.

why?

well, part of it was circumstantial: the site they picked had little arable land and they arrived a month behind in the planting schedule. part of it was the impracticality of living in the 1840s and being so vegan that they couldn't even use oxen to plough their fields or wear clothes that were warm in cold weather.

but the main reason was that the men of the commune (and they were almost all men, except for alcott's wife and another woman, ann page) didn't actually, like, do anything. they left all the household chores and childcare to the women, plus most of the farm work, while they sat around and philosophized about how cool their utopia was. even before it fell apart, most people there had began taking "vacations" away from fruitlands so that they could take hot baths and avoid trying to till the soil with their bare hands.

there are a lot of good lessons here.

1. it's very easy to talk about your great ideas for society but putting them into practice is much harder. you have to actually do the work to achieve the goal: you can't shunt it off onto other people based on the same oppressive systems you're trying to subvert.

2. you need to consider the practical implications of what you're arguing for, including potential downsides. banning wool for ethical reasons is all well and good until you're stuck wearing linen clothes and canvas shoes in the middle of a massachusetts winter.

3. you can't expect that a utopia is going to be all the things you like about society staying the same and everything you dislike being changed. that is at best naïve and at worst intensely selfish.

tl;dr: talk is cheap, praxis is hard.

Summary: Forced to attend a Slytherin gala, you stumble into someone who makes the night a bit more bearable. Contains: Fluff, a little bit of social anxiety. A/N: This is literally staight out of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott please don’t come for me. Loosely based on lyrics by Ms. Swift. Also thank you @velvetcloxds for reviewing this before it was kind of decent.

The music was uncomfortably loud. The dance floor, once navigable, was now crowded far beyond your liking. You hadn’t really planned on spending the night at a Slytherin gala, but your parents had. 

“Where’s your house pride?” they’d asked when you’d objected. You took plenty of pride in your house, however misunderstood it might’ve been. What you didn’t take pride in was often being lumped into the same category as the Death Eaters who now littered the ballroom. 

You’d danced with a couple of the boys there, those who you knew to be decent young men. But as the night progressed, the more people arrived at the party, and the more uneasy you felt. Which is how you found yourself expertly inching towards the corner of the room, making for the exit.

“Where are you going?” your mother’s shrill voice was enough to pierce the air, far from the dancing couples and string quartet. “You have to dance if you want to be invited to any more of these.”

“I don’t want that.” you groaned. 

She tutted and straightened you out, ignoring your comment. “Find yourself a mirror and fix your hair up. You look like you’ve just gotten off a broom. And for the love of Merlin, straighten up.”

“Alright, alright.” you sighed in defeat.

“The Malfoy boy was looking to dance with you. If I were you I’d try my best not to ruin your chances. And you ought to work on your dancing skills, you need to move more gracefully if you want a boy like Lucius to spare you a second glance.” she said stiffly before she ambled over to her friends, heels clacking against the marble.

There was no chance in hell you were dancing with Lucius Malfoy. You knew your parents only wanted the best for you, but climbing the social ladder was the last way to achieve that. That’s how you reasoned it as you slipped through the french doors and onto the porch that surrounded the mansion.

It was dark out, save for the lamps that adorned the exterior walls, but the ballroom inside provided more than enough light to see properly. Enough light to make out the silhouette of a boy. 

“Godric! You scared the shit out of me!”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” he panicked, shooting up and coming over to you. “I didn’t mean to.”

It was then, when the gold light was cast upon him entirely that you realized it was Regulus Black who’d nearly given you a heart attack. 

“I’m so sorry, I, uh, I didn’t realize there was anyone out here. And I’m not supposed to curse.” you stuttered.

“Says who?” Regulus smiled. It was the infectious sort of smile, the kind that would have any girl weak at the knees. “I don’t really know many people here, that’s why I’m out here. But you can stay if you like.”

“No, I wouldn’t want to be a bother.” you shook your head, simultaneously anxious to abandon this uncomfortable situation yet curious as to what would happen if you stayed.

“Nonsense.” Regulus tutted. He, unlike yourself, stood perfectly straight. The posture of a prince. “Please, stay.” 

“Well, if you insist, Mister Black.” you chuckled bashfully.

“Please, I’m actually begging you to never call me that again.” he laughed, the corners of his eyes crinkling above a childish grin.

“Oh, and what should I call you then?” You asked as you felt yourself beginning to feel more comfortable. 

“Regulus.” he replied, “Maybe Reggie on a good day.”

“Is today a good day?”

“I dare say it is.” he smirked boyishly. “Though I have an idea of how it could be better.”

“And how’s that?”

He extended his hand to you, the way a proper gentleman would. “Do you dance, Miss?”

“Not Miss.” you corrected him, blushing as you took his hand. “Just Y/N.”

“Well, then, Y/N. Shall we?”

He spun you around. Before you knew it you were both gliding down the porch, the people inside oblivious to the fun you were having. The more you danced the more the overwhelming feeling of joy and comfort washed over you, and your anxiousness to leave this place was the furthest thing from your mind. The classical music from the ballroom poured out the windows while you danced. All the couples inside were dancing much slower than the pair of you. Much more gracefully too. You were dancing like children. Like children who didn’t care for titles or social status. Like children who only wanted to enjoy the night and the other’s presence.

Sooner than you’d anticipated, the music died out, and you and Regulus were spent. Your chests heaved, excitement still buzzing in the air.

“Will you talk to me?” he asked suddenly. “When we’re back at school?”

“Of course, Reggie.” you smiled, not missing the way Regulus blushed as the name left your lips. “But only if you’ll dance with me one more time.”

“If I may be so bold, I’ll dance with you whenever you like.”

It was then when you heard your mother call your name from inside, breaking the little spell you both seemed to be under. 

“I’ve got to go.” you groaned, realizing you’d have to go back to playing pretend the second you’d set foot back in that room. “I had the best time, really.”

“So did I.” Regulus said, practically beaming. “I was enchanted to meet you, Y/N.”

“Well, I am a witch.” you snorted, quite unbecomingly as you made your way towards the door. Regulus made no effort to mask his amusement. 

‘I’ll see you at school’s were exchanged and before you knew it you were back in the icy cold ballroom, weaving your way through the dancers till you reached your parents.

“The Malfoy boy has left! Where in Merlin’s name were you?”

“Oh, nowhere.” you said, biting down a smirk that would’ve told them you knew something they didn’t. “Just working on my dancing skills.”

Chapter 21

Christmas eve

Draco awoke to darkness and his hands bound behind his back. He groaned softly, the rope of his hands cutting at his wrists as he attempted to break free. He hissed the rope dug farther into his raw and aching wrists; he assumed he had struggled to get out of the chair before. He groaned again as he felt a migraine blooming behind his eye. He sucked in a breath in an attempt to steady himself and gather his thoughts.

As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he looked around the room to find himself completely alone. The room was completely bare, save for a lone light hanging at the far end of the room. The room appeared to be an attic as the rafters of the sloping roof were clearly visible even in the dark.

The Slytherin shifted in his seat to see if his wand was still in his back pocket- a habit he had picked up from Harry- To no gain. It looked as though his abductors had stipped him of it. Deciding he needed to figure out where he was and who taken him captive he called out. He sat in his chair still as a statue for a few nerve-wracking seconds before he heard footsteps echo in the hallway outside his room. He took in a deep breath composing himself before the person walked in.

The instant the individual walked in, he flicked on the light switch, making Draco flinch away from the sudden brightness assaulting his eyes.

"Draco Lucius Malfoy..." A gruff voice purred as the man walked over to the blond's chair. "You're not going to make it out of here alive."

Draco blinked rapidly adjusting his eyes to the new lighting situation as he squinted up at the man who had so kindly informed him of his demise.

"Who are you?" He spat, glaring at the boulder of a man standing before him.

The guy was at least 6 feet tall. the man was well built with broad shoulders and a large frame. He had jet black hair set atop a square face. The bloke had a face set in a scowl with scars marring the entire plane. The most prominent one by far was a thick, jagged one running from his right eyebrow to a spot just below his left ear, rising and falling over his nose and eye. Draco couldn't help but stare; bad move because it looked like the man noticed.

"Looking at this?" He rasped, "Yeah, some death eaters did this to me after he slit my wife's throat, making me watch as the life bled out of her and our children before he carved this into my face. And trust me, this isn't the only scar he put on me."

Draco's cold, emotionless facade softened at that, his heart breaking for what this man had been through. He wondered how many others like him there were.

"I'm so sorry. Mr..." He said gently, trying his best to retain his frigid demeanour.

The man's fist came flying at his face. Before he could make an attempt to dodge it though, It connected with his jaw, har, bursting his lip open, making blood flow into his mouth and down his chin. "The name's Alcott and don't talk to me you scum." he spat, punching Draco in the stomach before steeping away.

Alcott wiped at his lip, walking around the room before asking the Slytherin,

"Where are the rest of your varmint friends eh? We heard you were going to try to kill all the mudbloods after your 'dark lord' died." He said, pacing around the area. "Just you wait. We're going to round up all you good-for-nothings and eliminate you all before you can do any more damage."

Draco cleared his throat, his body instinctively retreating into its signature drawl. "Well, my dear Alcott. It seems you have your story terribly wrong. We 'death eaters' don't have any plans of the sort. Sorry old boy, looks like you're going to have to let me go." He answered, the picture of nonchalance even in a critical situation.

Alcott let out an animalistic growl before flicking his wand at Draco. Just before the curse hit him, Draco heard the man mutter under his breath- "Crucio"

Draco howled in agony as the spell slammed into his body with the force of a charging rhinoceros. Every cell of his body screamed in anguish as he thrashed against his bonds. He screamed, again and again, while Alcott stood by smiling grimly at the suffering of the boy.

"serves you right." He muttered before casting the curse once more.

It must've been at least an hour before Alcott finally stopped his sadistic torture. Draco went limp in his chair, panting as he fought to raise his head.

Alcott did it for him, wrenching Draco's head up by the hair to stare him in the eye.

"That's just a little taste of what's to come you swine." He said as he punched him once more, harder than before while he walked out.

Draco watched the man walk away, his world spinning from his ordeal as he licked the blood off his lips. He struggled to raise his head, his sight going black around the edges. He groaned, as his vision faded to black, his chin falling against this chest.

Draco regained consciousness to a throbbing head. He moaned, lifting his head as he felt all the injuries inflicted upon him the previous night. He opened his eyes to discover that one of them was wrecked from the blow it received yesterday, his eyesight barely a slit through the swelling. He hissed as he stuck his tongue out to inspect his lip, which too was swollen and throbbing.

He didn't know what time it was, the room was completely dark, but his pulse rose as he heard footsteps in the hallway. The door opened to reveal Alcott, greeting Draco with a sadistic smile and fresh cruiciatus curse to start his interrogation.
