mentally i'm here
#la serreta de alcoi you'll always be famous <3#i feel so close to this archeological site (iberian settlement and sanctuary) cause i did two projects on it for uni#and it's the archaeological site closest to my dad's hometown so we went to the museum and i saw the artifacts with my own eyes#and we wanted to go to the site but it's practically impossible to get there#as you can see in the picture it's on the top of a mountain and the space is very abrupt and complicated#you have to cross a forest while climbing the mountain and there's no place to stop the car or anything. there's like this tiny path that#deviates from the road. no sign or anything. you just need to know la serreta is there#i once looked for how long it would take to climb the mountain to get to the site and it was like 2 hours#and of course like most archaeological sites in this country it's barely taken care of#it's practically abandoned

Eurasian griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) in the Mariola mountains of Alcoi, Central Valencian Country.
This bird species had gone extinct in the area, but since the year 2000 the FAPAS Foundation has been working on a project to reintroduce them in the Canyet de les Pedreres fauna reserve area. The project has been successful and is now a referent when it comes to vulture populations in all the Iberian peninsula (which is saying a lot, considering that 90% of Europe's vultures live in the Iberian peninsula!), with about 80 wild vultures living there nowadays.
Once a week, the city council compiles the unwanted remains from local butchers' and brings them to the mountain for the vultures to eat. In that spot, there is a "hide" (a wooden cabin for birdwatching) where people can go to watch the vultures eating, as long as they stay silent to avoid disturbing the birds, though the vultures might take hours to come, since they're wild animals.
The local butchers, farmers, and hunters contribute to the project donating their unwanted meat, because the reintroduction of this species is mutually beneficial for the environment and for economical reasons. On the one hand, vultures exclusively eat dead animals and sometimes ill animals, which means that they help stop the spread of pathogens among animals, which also results in less illnesses in farm animals. On the other hand, by using vultures instead of industrial plants to treat and dispose of meat products, we can avoid economical expense and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that would be emitted during the industrial treatment.

LA SERRETA DE ALCOI MENTIONED IN THE OPOSICIONES TEXTBOOK ‼️‼️‼️
#LET'S GOOOO#i feel so much about la serreta because not only is the closest archaeological site to my dad's hometown#i also did two projects about it during uni#i even went to the qrchaeological museum of alcoi for research#(la serreta itself is nearly impossible to get to. you have to climb a mountain to get to it)#it's a site unimportant enough to not be regularly mentioned but important enough to sometimes get mentioned and when it does#it's the best thing ever i love her soooo much#what usually gets mentioned about la serreta is its sanctuary which had so many terracotta exvote#one of the largest collections in the peninsula (maybe the largest? unclear)#oh and there's this one that is a bit more elaborate that depicts a female figure with i believe two doves? it's been a while#google diosa madre de la serreta (mother goddess of la serreta) and you'll find her
