Marking Time
We have pretty much settled here in Montana for the time being until the Canadian border opens and we can continue our plan to drive to Alaska. Our path to this point took us through several states that we were honestly not planning on spending much time in. When we got back to Texas we then spent time in Mississippi that we had already planned on but by then things were already crazy and everything shut down. From Mississippi we went into Alabama, then back to Mississippi, north to Tennessee and into Arkansas and then Missouri. Recently we spent time in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. We had previously passed on a few of these states our first time through last summer but with things the way they are we have been forced to slow down.         Actually I am really glad we spent time in those places we would not normally have gone to. We do miss the museums and learning centers, but having to look elsewhere for things to do has taken us on some interesting trails, parks and points of interest. John was hoping to get in some skydives along the way but of course all drop zones are shut down. He was able to get his reserve repacked in Missouri and the “Rigger” who did it turned out to be a nice guy we enjoyed talking with. In Kansas we went to the Eisenhower Museum and even though it was closed we could walk around the grounds and see the statues. There are also a lot of old restored mansions in Kansas and we took a look at them from the outside.         We blasted through Nebraska, spending one night in Lincoln. We also moved through South Dakota pretty quickly since we had previously spent a lot of time there, but slowed down once we got to North Dakota. Driving through North Dakota the landscape changed dramatically, from somewhat boring brown rolling hills to the stellar “Badlands” erosion phenomenon that had us stopping frequently to ohhh and ahhh at the natural beauty. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park had many magnificent views with lots of hiking trails and scenic overlooks. There were herds of Buffalo, Prairie Dog Towns, roaming Pronghorns and an assortment of birds.         We stayed four days in Fargo and visited the Aircraft Museum there the second day it was open. They were thrilled to have us and we were able to watch some restoration work being done on one of the planes. We watched the movie “Fargo in honor of being there, even though the movie actually takes place in Brainerd, Minnesota. But at least now I can say I’ve been to Fargo (and even saw the FargoDome). The old town of Jamestown was a cultural experience and the campground we stayed in there was quite rustic where the locals looked at you thinking “you’re not from around these parts, are you?”. The Enchanted Highway is a 32 mile stretch of 2 lane highway that has large metal sculptures placed along the roadway that can be seen from miles away. This is out in the middle of nowhere and originated to save the dying towns in the area and have people come to look.         Even though it feels like we have been Marking Time (marching in place), in retrospect we have managed to get around quite a bit, see things we hadn’t planned on and still stayed active hiking and being outdoors.

It was an honor to have 4 of my landscape photographs selected to be exhibited at The Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine, CA in celebration of the awarding of the Federal designation of the Alabama Hills as a “National Scenic Area”. While this may not sound super impressive it took the hard work and dedication of the people of the Lone Pine area and the BLM ten years to achieve this milestone and gives substantial protections to the heart of Alabama Hills for generations to come. - Photographed by such venerable photographers as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, the Alabama Hills is an incredible place with a rugged beauty that (for me anyway) is incredibly difficult to truly accurately share in a photograph. If you have an opportunity I highly recommend that you take the time to visit this beautiful place and experience it for yourself. What made this experience even more incredible was that for the ribbon cutting ceremony there was a family of Native Americans there who’s family were some of the original residents of the Alabama Hills area who had been a part of this effort to achieve this designation as well as share a part of their beautiful culture at the ceremony. At one point a beautiful Native American woman sang a traditional song in her native tongue while we were in the Hills and the sun was beginning to set behind the surrounding mountains. I do have to say that this was one of the most beautiful moments that I have ever experienced and a memory that I will never forget. I didn’t take any photos when she was singing both out of respect to her performance and also because I just wanted to experience that moment, in person, as fully as possible. - CONTINUED IN COMMENTS (at Alabama Hills, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3uhYkKnR7h/?igshid=1vmtn5qlosytc

Excerpt from this SB Sun article:
Republicans and Democrats disagree on a lot of issues, but protecting deserts in Southern California doesn’t seem to be one of them.
Legislation was introduced this month in both chambers of Congress, by members of both major parties, with the goal of protecting 716,000 acres of regional desert, adding a swath nearly as big as Rhode Island to regional land that’s already under protection. New protected zones would include off-highway vehicle recreation areas and wilderness, and an expansion of several National Parks.
The identical bills, sponsored by Rep. Paul Cook, R-Yucca Valley, in the House of Representatives and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, in the Senate, are the result of years of work with the off-roading community, conservationists and local governments. For different reasons, all of those interests want to see the protections in place.
Cook’s bill has the support of Democrat Reps Pete Aguilar, D-Redlands, Juan Vargas, D-Imperial Valley and Raul Ruiz, D-La Quinta. Feinstein’s bill is co-sponsored by fellow California Sen. Kamala Harris.
The legislation on the table would designate six Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas including: Johnson Valley, Sprangler Hills, El Mirage, Rasor, Dumont Dunes and Stoddard Valley. This would be a win for off-highway vehicle users, as it would ensure permanent access to more than 300,000 acres in the desert for recreation.
In addition to the off-road areas, the bills aim to protect more than 375,500 acres of wilderness area. This includes 280,360 acres that would be protected by the creation of eight new Bureau of Land Management wilderness areas in the region. Death Valley National Park Wilderness would grow by 88,000 acres, while the San Gorgonio Wilderness in the San Bernardino National Forest would gain 7,141 acres. The areas are home to bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and some endangered species, and they include Native American cultural sites.
The bills also would require the Bureau of Land Management to develop a plan for maintaining wildlife corridors, Henson said. The wilderness protections would prevent future presidential administrations, BLM management, and U.S. Forest Service management from opening the areas for mining, off-highway vehicle use or other kinds of development, Henson said.
Under the proposed bills, Joshua Tree National Park would gain 4,518 acres, plus the privately established Joshua Tree Visitor Center. Death Valley National Park would grow by 35,292 acres, including 1,600 acres donated by the Mojave Desert Land Trust.
The legislation also would designate 18,610 acres of BLM land in Inyo County as the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. The area has been a popular filming location, and can be seen in Iron Man, Django Unchained, Tremors, westerns and more. An old mining area on the site is also popular among recreational prospectors and the land has been enjoyed for other activities such as hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting fish and authorized motorized vehicle use, Itnyre said. The designation would prevent large scale projects, like renewable energy generation, which has been a big concern among locals, he said. Filming and recreational uses, however, would continue, he said.

THE MOST DOG-FRIENDLY NATIONAL PARKS
THE MOST DOG-FRIENDLY NATIONAL PARKS: For any dog-loving traveller, leaving behind our furry friend can often be the hardest part of going on any vacation. Most national parks have strict pet policies and limit them to small areas of the parks. Luckily, there are quite a few national parks that are very pet friendly! So whether you are planning on a just a day trip or a longer stay, there are many national parks to visit that are pet friendly. Here are some of the best national parks to bring along your canine companion! Acadia National Park* Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine is quite a pet friendly park! Dogs are welcome on almost all of the 120 miles of hiking trails that Acadia has to offer making it a great option if you're looking to hike with your pooch. Pets are also welcome on all 45 miles of carriage roads within the park. There are only a few trails that require iron rungs for climbing, making them the only trails that do not allow animals. Dogs are also allowed in nearly all of the public areas at the park - even on the shuttles that go around the park. The only places they are not allowed are Duck Harbor Campground, Wild Gardens of Acadia, Echo Lake Beach, and Sand Beach during high season (mid-May to mid-Sept). Your pup is welcome to join you anywhere else in Acadia National Park making it an ideal spot for your next adventure! Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Acadia National Park! White Sands National Park White Sands National Park in New Mexico is another park very welcoming to pets. You can explore all of the trails in the park together! The only place that animals are not permitted is inside buildings. Dogs must be leashed but are welcome on all trails, sand dunes, and picnic areas. If you are planning on visiting White Sands, be sure to pack plenty of water for both of you. The dry desert air and high elevation can lead to dehydration and the only place with water access is at the visitors center. Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in White Sands National Park! Hot Springs National Park Located in Arkansas, Hot Springs National Park is a unique national park. The park encompases a historic downtown and forested hiking area. If you're eager to explore the hiking trails, all 26 miles of the available trails are pet friendly for you and your leashed dog. In the historic district, animals are not permitted in the bathhouses at the park, but you and furry friend are welcome to enjoy a stroll on the sidewalks on Bathhouse Row and along the Grand Promenade. If you are looking for a longer stay at the park, Gulpha Gorge campground is a great option if you're looking for a pet friendly camping option. Click here to read about Hot Springs National Park! Cuyahoga Valley National Park Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located outside Cleveland, Ohio, offers 125 miles of trails throughout the park - and your dog is welcome to join you on pretty much all of them! There are many different types of trails passing through fields, wetlands, and woodlands, so it's a good idea to check in with a park ranger to figure out which trails are most suitable for your needs. The only places where pets are not allowed include inside any park building (with the exception of service dogs), on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Train, and on the East Rim mountain bike trail. Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park! Petrified Forest National Park* Not only does Petrified Forest National Park permit dogs at the park, they're encouraged to join you on your visit! You and your pup are welcome on all the trails throughout the park and in the backcountry - as long as dogs are leashed. Keep in mind that there is no access to water in the backcountry, so be sure to pack enough water for both of you on your adventure. You and your canine companion can also camp in the park if you'd like. You'll just need to pick up a free backcountry permit at the Painted Desert Visitor Center or Rainbow Forest Museum. There are no established campsites, which means you can camp wherever you'd like to within the park! Click here to learn more about Petrified Forest National Park! Grand Canyon National Park* Located in northern Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park is another park that is very pet friendly! You and your dog are welcome to enjoy all 13 miles of the South Rim Trail. Yavapai Lodge is located inside the park and has pet friendly rooms if you are looking for an overnight option. Animals may also be boarded at the South Rim Kennel. Whether you plan to visit Grand Canyon National Park with or without your canine companion, it is important to note that the high elevation and dry climate can lead to dehydration. Even if you're only planning a short stroll or hike, be sure to bring plenty of water - and don't forget a dog bowl! Click here to read about the Best Things To Do in Grand Canyon National Park! * These national parks participate in the Bark Ranger Program.
