"Allah is Just the Holy Spirit." From Surah 3, Ali Imran, "Mary's Ancestor."
3:27-32
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account."
Let not believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing with Allah, except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allah warns you of Himself, and to Allah is the [final] destination.
Say, "Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allah knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And Allah is over all things competent.
The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is Kind to [His] servants."
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
Say, "Obey Allah and the Messenger." But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.
If we are going to establish God is a Father and the maker of the Son, and the process took place during the transition between what is infinite what is finite, then we need, as the verses state, to establish Allah is the Holy Spirit foremost.
The Quran says "Allah warns; He is the destination, he is present and He is at a distance." This concept, called Ruh, explains how God infiltrates all reality, all consciousness, relays all thought, intuition and experience throughout creation, specifically in the transfiguration of ordinary organic matter and human tissue into the Christ:
Rūḥ al-qudus (Arabic: روح القدس, "the holy spirit" or "spirit of holiness"), ar-rūḥ al-amin (Arabic: الروح الأمين, "the faithful/trustworthy spirit"), is a Quranic expression that describes a source or means of prophetic revelations, commonly identified with the angel Gabriel.[11][12][13] Quranic commentators disagreed in their identification of Gabriel with various uses of the word rūḥ.[13][14] For some, ar-rūḥ is simply the angelic quality bestowed upon humans, but not an angel himself.
The phrase rūḥ al-qudus, commonly translated as the "holy spirit" or the "spirit of holiness", occurs four times in the Quran,[13] in Quran 2:87 and 253,[15] Al-Ma'idah verse 110,[16] and An-Nahl verse 102.[17] In three instances, it is described as the means by which God "strengthened" Jesus, and in the fourth it is identified as the one brought down God's truth to his prophet.[13]
As interpreted to refer to the Archangel Gabriel[edit]
The term Rūḥ al-Qudus is also an epithet referring to the Archangel Gabriel,[18] who is related as the Angel of revelation and was assigned by God to reveal the Qurʼan to the Islamic prophet Muhammad and who delivered the Annunciation to Mary.[19]
In the two suras in which the Qur'an refers to the angel Gabriel, it does so by name.[20] However, some hadiths and parts of the Qurʼan may arguably lend support to the alternative view.
It appears to be indicated by the Quran in sura Maryam, ayat 17–21, that it was the angel Gabriel who gave to Mary the tidings that she was to have a son as a virgin:
"screening herself off from them. Then We sent to her Our angel, ˹Gabriel,˺ appearing before her as a man, perfectly formed. She appealed, “I truly seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you! ˹So leave me alone˺ if you are God-fearing.” He responded, “I am only a messenger from your Lord, ˹sent˺ to bless you with a pure son.” She wondered, “How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, nor am I unchaste?” He replied, “So will it be! Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me. And so will We make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us.’ It is a matter ˹already˺ decreed.”

Know The Mahdi (a.s.)
Has Ghaybat been discussed in Quran?
Ghaybat has been discussed extensively in the Quran and in traditions of the Holy Prophet (sawa) and Aimmah (as).
According to traditions, Ghaybat was not for Imam Mahdi (as) alone. Allah has kept sufficient examples in previous prophets which include Hazrat Yunus (as), Hazrat Saleh (as), Hazrat Yusuf (as) who were hidden from the eyes of their nation for a long period of time.
In the Quran we find several verses which Aimmah explained that refer to Ghaybat. These verses have to be understood in the light of the traditions of Ahle Bayt (as).
This practice is as per the advice of the Holy Prophet of Islam (sawa) who said, “I leave behind two valuable things after me – the Quran and the Ahle Bayt (as). They will never be separated from each other till they reach me at the Pond of Kawthar.”
The Prophet (sawa) advised people to remain attached to both Quran and Ahle Bayt (as) to prevent deviation from religion.
Therefore it is imperative that we always refer to the words of the Ahle Bayt (as) while analysing any verse of the Quran.
The Ahle Bayt (as) are the ones blessed with the correct knowledge and interpretation of the Quran. Any analysis of the Quran without their input is worthless.
The discussion of Ghaybat is initiated right at the beginning of the Holy Quran.
Yahya bin (Abi) Qasem said,
“I asked Imam Sadiq (as) about the verse – “Alif Lam Mim. This Book, there is no doubt in it, is a guide to those who guard (against evil). Those who believe in the unseen and keep up prayer and spend out of what We have given them.”
(Surah Baqarah, verses 1-3).
The Imam (as) replied,
“Those who are pious” are the Shiahs of Ali. ‘The unseen’ is the Decisive Proof (Imam Mahdi) who will be in Ghaybat. The supporting evidence for this is the following verse, “And they say: Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord’ Say: ‘Verily, the unseen is only for Allah (to know) therefore wait; verily I am with you, among those who wait”
(Surah Yunus, verse 20)
The book “al-Muhajjah Fee Maa Nazala Ala Qaem al-Hujjah” by Sayyed Hashim Bahrani brings more than 120 verses from Quran which are regarding Imam Mahdi (as). The topic of Ghaybat has been discussed in Quran through different aspects:
Ghaybat is a period of examinations –
Surah Baqarah, verse 155
Companions of Imam (as) will also be tried –
Surah Baqarah, verse 249
Ghaybat was prophesied by Holy Prophet (sawa) –
Surah Nisa, verse 59
Ghaybat requires waiting and patience –
Surah Yunus, verse 20
Ghaybat will end suddenly –
Surah Mohammed, verse 18
Length of Ghaybat will harden the hearts of disbelievers –
Surah Hadid, verse 16
Ghaybat is by Allah and nobody can advance or postpone reappearance except Allah –
Surah Mulk, verse 30
Ghaybat is like the hiding of stars – Surah Takweer, verses 15-16
Ghaybat was found in other prophets too –
Surah Inshiqaq, verse 19
Time of Ghaybat requires enjoining patience –
Surah Asr, verse 1-3
Some of these verses and their explanation are given below
Surah Baqarah, verse 155 – Ghaybat is a Test for the Believers
Mohammed Ibne Muslim says that regarding the verse,
“And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient”
(Surah Baqarah, verse 155),
Imam Sadiq said,
“Allah will test the believers with different trial before the rising of the Qaem.”
“What are the trials?” I asked. Imam replied: “We shall surely try you with something of fear, and hunger, and loss of wealth, and lives, and fruits; and give glad tidings to the patient ones”
“We shall surely try you” refers to the believers;
“with something of fear” refers to fear of the oppressive rulers – who will be the children of someone – in the last days of their reign;
“and hunger” refers to the inflation of prices;
“and loss of wealth” refers to the lack of profits business will earn;
“and lives” refers to sudden death;
“and fruits” refers to earning little from farming and reduction in the blessings of the harvest.
“And give glad tidings to the patient ones” means (that when you see these signs), “give glad tidings” about the rising of the Qaem.
Then Imam said, “O Mohammed! This is the Taweel (hidden interpretation) of these verse and as Allah says, None knows its hidden interpretation except Allah and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge”
(Surah Ale Imran, verse 7) (al-Ghaybah by Nomani, page 132)
Abu Baseer said Imam Sadiq (as) said,
“The year before the Qaem rises, the following will surely occur – people wil experience hunger, people will face extreme fear of being killed, and people will suffer loss of wealth, life and livelihood. Allah clearly explains this in His book,
“We shall surely try you with something of fear, and hunger, and loss of wealth, and lives, and fruits; and give glad tidings to the patient ones”
(Surah Baqarah, verse 155) (al-Ghaybah by Nomani, page 132)
Surah Nisa, verse 59 – Ghaybat was Prophesied by Holy Prophet (sawa)
Jabir Ibne Abdullah Ansari said, when the verse, “O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and those vested with authority (by Allah) from among you” (Surah Nisa, verse 59) was revealed, I asked the Messenger of Allah (sawa) – O Messenger of Allah! We understood Allah and His Messenger but who are “those vested with authority (by Allah)” whose obedience Allah has paired with your obedience?
The Prophet (sawa) replied, O Jabir! They are my caliphs and they are the Imams of the Muslims after me. The first one is Ali Ibne Abi Talib, after him Hasan is the Imam, after him Husain, then Ali Ibne Husain, then Mohammed Ibne Ali, who is known in the Torah as Baqir. And you O Jabir, will meet him. So when you do, convey my salam to him.
After Mohammed Ibne Ali it is the truthful, Jafar Ibne Mohammed, then Musa Ibne Jafar, then Ali Ibne Musa, then Mohammed Ibne Ali, then Ali Ibne Mohammed, and then Hasan Ibne Ali.
After him, it will be the one who bears the same name and title as mine. He is Allah’s Decisive Proof (Hujjat) on His land and he is the Remainder of Allah (Baqiyatullah) on His creation. He is the son of Hasan Ibne Ali. Allah will achieve victory throughout His land through him. He is the one who will disappear from his Shiah and his lovers for (a period of time) during which only whose hearts Allah has tested, will stay steady in believing in his Imamate.
Jabir asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Will the Shiah benefit from him when he is in occultation?”
The Prophet (sawa) replied, Yes! I swear to He who sent me as a prophet, that they will. They will see with his light and benefit from his Mastership (wilayah) just like people benefit from the sun when it is behind the clouds. O Jabir! This is one of the secrets of Allah which is contained in His knowledge. Do not share it except with the right people.
Surah Takweer, verses 15-16 – Ghaybat is Like the Hiding of Stars
When Umm Haani asked Imam Baqir (as) regarding verse 16 from Surah Takweer, “But nay! I swear by the stars that run their course (and) hide themselves”, Imam (as) replied, “Yes, you have indeed asked a question, O Umm Haani. This verse is about the boy who will be born in the last era. He is the Mahdi from this progeny. There will be confusion pertaining to him and an occultation in which some groups will be deviated and others will be guided. Congratulations to you, if you find him and congratulations to anyone who finds him.’”
(Muntakhabul Asar chapter 38, footnote of tradition 614)
Surah Mohammed, verse 18 – Ghaybat Will End Suddenly
Mufazzal Ibne Omar said, I asked my master Imam Sadiq (as), “Is there a fixed time of which people are aware for the awaited Mahdi?” Imam (as) replied, “Allah forbids to a fix a time for him.”
I asked, “O my master! Why is that?”
Imam (as) replied, “Because it is the hour that Allah mentions in the verse, “They ask you about the hour: When is its fixed time? Say: Only my Lord has the knowledge. None shall manifest it at its time but He. Heavy shall it be in the heavens and the earth. It ill not come to you but suddenly. They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say: Knowledge thereof is with Allah only. But most people do not know”
(Surah Aaraf, verse 187).
Allah says in this verse that He alone knows the time of “the hour.”
Allah says in (another) verse, “Do they wait for anything but the hour, that it may come on them all of a sudden? Its signs have (already) appeared. How can the reminder be of any use to them when it (the hour) has come to them?”
(Surah Mohammed verse 18).
Allah says in (another) verse, “The hour has come near and the moon is rent asunder”
( Surah Qamar, verse 1).
Allah says in (another) verse, “What shall make you know? It may be that the hour is near. Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it, while those who believe are alert of it, and know that it is the truth. Beware! Verily those who dispute about the hour are (wandering) far astray”
(Surah Shurah, verses 17-18)
I asked, “O my master! What does “disputing about the hour” mean?”
Imam replied, They ask, “When was he (the Qaem) born? Who has seen him? Where is he? And when will he reappear?” They ask all of these questions because they seek to challenge it, wondering if it is the truth, for they doubt the Will and the Power of Allah. They are those who have lost their souls in this life and in the Hereafter. And verily for the disbelievers there is an evil place of final return.
I asked, “O my master! Then will you not appoint a time for him?” Imam replied, “O Mufazzal! Do not (seek to) appoint a time for him, because those who appoint a time for him (claim) to be partners with Allah in His knowledge and claim that Allah has revealed His knowledge and His secrets to them.” (al-Hidaya al-Kubra page 392)
Ghaybat is Established in Quran
The above verses are some amongst many verses in the Quran which talk about Ghaybat, that it will be a period of test for the believers, that many will be deviated due to their lack of faith and patience in its regard.
Shaykh Kulaini (ra) reports a tradition from Muffazal (ra), who narrates from Imam Sadiq (as),
“By Allah, your Imam will be hidden from you for a long time till it will be said – where has he gone? Has he been killed? Or has he died? Or has he been destroyed? .. and you will be tested in such a manner that tears will flow from the eyes of believers who are grieved with his separation. Troubles and difficulties will afflict you in such a manner as a ship is trapped in a storm. Then except for those who are firm in their pledge with Allah and whose faith has been established and engraved in their hearts, nobody else will be saved.”
(al-Kafi, Book of Divine Proof, chapter of Ghaybat)
May Allah guide us in this difficult period and allow our hearts to remain firm on the path of Ahle Bayt (as) during Ghaybat and also at the time of reappearance of Imam Mahdi (as). Ameen!

Verses of the Holy Qur’an to be recited after prayers
Some actions are to be performed after the completion of every compulsory prayer and these are called Ta’qibaat. Out of the numerous actions that have been recommended, there are a few verses of the Holy Qur’an that have also been prescribed and carry much reward if recited after the daily prayers.
The following is a list of the verses that should be recited and a note of the reward gained for the recitation of each one.
1. Ayah ash-Shahada (Surah Ali-’Imran: 18-19)
In the commentary of Majma’ul Bayaan, it is narrated from the Holy Prophet that those who recite this ayah make a covenant with Allah (S.w.T.) and Allah always fulfils His covenants. If this ayah is recited after every prayer, then Jannah is guaranteed to the reciter.
2. Ayah al-Mulk (Surah Ali-’Imran: 26-27)
It is narrated that the Holy Prophet (S) once advised one of his companions, who was in debt, to recite this ayah after every prayer and then supplicate to Allah (S.w.T.) for the repayment of his debts saying that even if the debts are equal to the entire land on Earth, they will be repaid.
3. Ayah al-Kursi (Surah al-Baqarah: 255-257)
It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (S) that there is no barrier between the person who recites this ayah after every prayer and Jannah except for death ie. he will be taste the pleasures of Jannah immediately after his death, and only that person will be able to recite it who is pious and righteous.
4. Ayah al-Madhkurah (Surah ar-Rum: 17-22)
Whoever recites this after every compulsory prayer will get a reward equal to drops of rain and grains of sand. The Holy Prophet (S) has highly recommended the recitation of this ayah especially during the early morning and evening times.
5. Ayah as-Sakhrah (Surah A’araaf: 54)
This should also be recited after every prayer. The benefit of reciting this ayah is that it acts as a protection from Shaitan. It is said that the one who recites this ayah is protected against the plots of Shaitan even if he is alone in the desert.
Other recitations are also recommended, for example, it is said in a narration that whoever recites Surah at-Tawhid after prayers will wed a Hur-ul-Ein in Jannah. It is recommended that Surah at-Tawhid be recited ten times after every prayer and this leads to being forgiven be Allah (S.w.T.) and being blessed with the good of this world and the hereafter.
For the sake of brevity, here is a list of ayaat and Surahs that are also recommended to be recited after prayers:
a) Surah al-Ahzaab: 56
b) Surah al-Baqarah: 285-286
c) Surah al-Kahf: 109-110
d) Surah as-Saffaat: 1-10 and then the last three ayaat.
e) Surah ar-Rahman: 33-36
f) Surah al-Hashr: 21-24
g) Surah al-An’aam: 1-3
h) Surah al-Falaq, an-Naas, ar-Rahman al-Qadr, al-Fatehah, Ya Sin, al-Waaqiyah, al-Mulk, ad-Dahar and an-Naba are all recommended.

Could you please explain and tell the difference between "Karamah" and "Istidraj" ?
WONDER-WORKS (Karamah)
Karamah literally means something precious, superior, nice and generosity. As an Islamic term, it means “a supernatural event which happens through a believing righteous person”.
Some scholars considered Allah’s all kinds of endowment on saints a wonder-work, regardless of the condition of supernaturality (Sayyid Sabiq, al-Aqidatu’l-Islamiyya, Beirut, (nd), p.24). What is meant here by “supernatural event” is an event which happens outside the general laws of nature.
Indeed, the system and plan that are dominant over the universe is more marvelous than supernaturality. For this reason, Allah, the Glorious, suggests the system and plan in the universe as evidence to His oneness by saying “If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides God, there would have been confusion in both! But glory to God, the Lord of the Throne: (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!” (al-Anbiya, 21/22). People attach more importance to wonder-works than those perfect laws ruling in universe because they have become too familiar with them as they observe them every day.
As the creator of the natural laws is Allah, it is also in His power to change them. “To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and God hath power over all things” (aal-i Imran, 3/189). In this sense, we should consult to the book sent by Allah to us in order to determine the possibility of supernaturality.
Scholars specially cite the 24th-26th verses of chapter Maryam, 16th-17th verses of chapter al-Kahf and 37th verse of chapter Aal-i Imran as evidence to wonder-works. (see: Razi, at- Tafsiru'l Kabir, Tahran (n.d.), VIII, 30; AbusSuud, Irshadu'l-Aqli's-Salim, Cairo (n.d.), II, 31; Tabatabai, al-Mizan fi Tafsiri'l-Qur'an, Qum (n.d.), III, 174-175)
The fact that one of Prophet Solomon’s viziers brought Bilqis’ (or Balqis; queen of Sheba) throne from Yemen to Palestine in a blink of an eye (an-Naml, 27/40) and the story of “ashab-al kahf (inhabitants of the cave)” told in chapter al-Kahf are examples of righteous people’s wonder-works (al-Kahf, 18/9-25). The fact that fresh dates dropped when Maryam (Mary) shook a dead date tree is a wonder-work of hers. (Maryam, 19/19).
The narrations about the issue in hadiths are as follows: Abd b. Juwain talked with a child in cradle (Bukhari, Anbiya, 48). The narrative of a cow talking with its owner (Bukhari, Anbiya, 54). Umar shouted out from Madinah to Sariyah, the commander of Islamic army in Nahavand saying that “go up to the mountain” and commander Sariyah heard it (Ajluni, Kashfu’l-Khafa), II, 380-381).
Allah, the Glorious, says in a verse in the chapter Aal-i Imran: “Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: To the care of Zachariah was she assigned. Every time that he entered (Her) chamber to see her, He found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! Whence does this come to you?" She said: "From God: for God Provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure." (Aal-i Imran, 3/37).
In this verse, a boon bestowed upon Mary is told about. What we should ponder over is from whence this boon may have come. Was it natural, that is to say; in accordance with natural laws, or was it through a supernatural event? The expression style of the verse and Zachariah’s prayer mentioned in the verse prior to this one support that the boon was bestowed in a supernatural way. If it was not through a supernatural way, it would be meaningless to mention this to extol Mary (Razi, ibid., VIII, 30; Alusi, Ruhu’l Maani, Beirut (n.d.), III. 144).
As for the issue of Zachariah’s prayer, Prophet Zachariah was old and his wife could not give birth anymore (Aal-i Imran, 3/40). However, when he witnessed the boon bestowed upon Mary, he prayed as “Lord, give me a pure generation. You hear the prayers” (Aal-i Imran, 3/38). It is meaningful that he prayed for having a pure generation right away after seeing it. As is told by many interpreters, when he witnessed that wonder-work created for Mary, he desired to have children though his wife was too old and he prayed for it (Fakhruddin ar-Razi, ibid, VIII, 30; Abu Suud, II, 31).
Moreover, the word “boon” is mentioned as “nakra (indefinite)” in the verse and it indicates to honor that boon. That is to say, it indicates that the boon is so unordinary and unexpected (Razi, ibid, VIII, 30; Abu Suud, ibid, II, 30).
In conclusion, it tells about supernaturality. It is possible for a saint to have a supernaturality, that is, a wonder-work. However, the reality of wonder-works does not require that every saint should have a wonder-work. Saintliness does not need supernaturality (Ibn Abi'l-Izz al-Hanafi, Sharhu Aqida fi't-Tahawiyye, Beirut 1392 p. 561). In fact, most of the companions of the Prophet do not have wonder-works (Muhammad Fakhr Shaqfa, at-Tasawwuf Bayn'l Haqq wa'l-Khalq, Syria 1971, p. 103).
Wonder-works, apart from being real, have been given different meanings, far away from its origin, because of people have too much interest in such events; and they use the wonder-works for propaganda of their sheikhs. When axioms mentioned in the Quran and sunnah as proof to the wonder-works are analyzed, it can be seen that such wonder-works occur when saints encounter some difficulties and that such occurrences do not happen all the time. Moreover, occurrence of such a wonder-work is neither under saints’ control nor do saints have the knowledge of them. When they occur, they occur to ease or abolish saints’ troubles; as a way out.
Doubtlessly, one of the dangerous misinterpretations of wonder-works is the thought that saints predict future and ghaib (unknown) and that they read people’s minds.
Wonder-works and predicting the unknown:
Ghaib means unknown. The verse the translation of which is “No one can know but Allah” points out to this reality.
It is indicated in the 26th verse of the chapter al-Jinn that ghaib can be known only by Allah. However, in the following verse, it is said that He will give information about past and future to His slaves whom He has chosen. That means that Allah’s beloved slaves can know the unknown as well.
In this sense, we should understand the statement “No one can know ghaib but Allah” as “no one can know unless Allah lets them know”. In fact, our Prophet informed about some events that happened in the past and some that will happen in the future, with the permission of Allah.
Yes, Allah can let a beloved slave of His (a prophet or a saint) know the unknown if He wills. Those honorable people can inform about an event through an inspiration in their hearts. That is to say, Allah can let some people know before an event happens. It is also evidence of Allah’s free will. If we say that no one else but Allah can know and claim that prophets and saints cannot know the unknown, we will have harmed the truth of the verse and we will have admitted the idea that Allah’s will is restricted from the beginning. And it contradicts our belief.
Revelation is sent only to prophets. On the other hand, inspiration is given to Allah’s beloved slaves.
Another idea regarding the issue is that a saintly person can sense some things about another person as the hadith of our Prophet “Beware of a true believer’s perception because he/she observes through Allah’s light (Tirmidhi, Tafsiru surah, 15/6) indicates. As a matter of fact, when a man who looked at a woman while walking in the street went over Hazrat Uthman, he said “one of you is entering and there is a trace of visual fornication in his eyes”. Then, the man asks: “Is revelation still coming after the Messenger of Allah?”. And Uthman says: No, but a true believer has a strong perception” (Nabhani, Hujjatu’l-lahi ala’l-Alamin, p. 862).
When evaluated from this point of view, it is necessary to determine the limits of knowing the unknown very well. We can say according to the criteria given above that we cannot consider a person to be a saint just because he displays supernatural events. And we cannot consider his supernatural events as wonder-works. First of all, we must take that person’s degree of closeness to Allah’s laws and his loyalty to Islam into consideration, and then we can make a judgment about them accordingly. A person who claims to have wonder-works without a lawful reason is not regarded positively but negatively. However, the greatest wonder-work is being on the path of Allah’s laws.
When one talked about wonder-works near Abdullah at-Tustari, he said: “What wonder-work? What verse? There are some things that Allah reveals when their time comes. However, the greatest wonder-work, be sure of it, is replacing one’s own bad features with good ones.” Abu’l Hasan Ash-Shazali says on the issue: “Real wonder-work is being on the right path, and making that path to the most mature level. It is based on two things. It is enabled by really believing in Allah and complying with Allah’s Messenger’s teachings. A person’s duty is to endeavor to gain them. A person must have only one aim: to reach those two goals. However, as for wonder-works which are regarded as supernaturality, it is not esteemed by scholars because it occurs through the ones who have advanced on the path and sometimes occurs as a result of istidraj (supernatural event through the hands of an unbeliever).”
Moreover, Allah’s saintly slaves do not esteem wonder-work or wonder-works which happen through a righteous slave and do not accept those wonder-works as indications of those people’s superiority. On the issue, Imam Yafii says: “A person through whom wonder-works happen is not necessarily a saint. It cannot be said that it is evidence to their superiority over other people; such kind of a claim cannot be put forward. There are some people who do not show any wonder-works yet they are more virtuous than and superior to those who show wonder-works. As a matter of fact, a wonder-work may have occurred in order to improve its owner’s belief. It can be evidence to that person’s righteousness and virtuousness. However, the wonder-work is not necessarily evidence to his/her superiority. Superiority can be gained only by believing as if one has seen God and by recognizing Him”
To sum up the issue of wonder-work, it is a blessing Allah gives to His beloved slaves and it is an inspiration which He evokes in their hearts.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WONDER-WORK (KARAMAH) AND ISTIDRAJ
Allah bestowed upon His prophets wonder-works in order to prove that their prophethood is right and similarly he bestowed some marvelous events called “wonder-works” upon His saintly slaves. Wonder-works shown by a saintly person is the indication of the truth of the Prophet’s prophethood. It is because the wonder-work of a saint is considered to be the wonder-work of the prophet that the saint follows.
There are some events which can be shown as examples of wonder-works: the River Nile overflowed when Umar’s letter was thrown into it. While Umar was reciting a sermon on minbar (pulpit) in Madinah, he shouted out “O Sariya, beware of the mountain” to the commander of the army which was at a distance of one month and Sariya heard it, and the army escaped from that danger.
Wonder-works can be seen with people who recognize Allah with all of His attributions, worship Him faultlessly, avoid sins, do not incline to unlawful means of delight and do not indulge in heedlessness. The marvelous events which are seen with people who do not have those qualities and even live a life which totally contradicts them are not wonder-works but “istidraj”.
Istidraj means marvelous events done by people who are apparently infidels or sinful according to their own will. As a matter of fact, in a hadith written in the explanation of al-Fiqhul-Akbar, the following is stated about the issue:
“When you see that Allah gives a confirmed disobedient person whatever he wants, it is istidraj.”
The reason why Allah gives those who rebel against Him whatever they want is to increase their punishment not because they have got truth. As a matter of fact, Satan is allowed to travel around the world however he likes; Pharaoh and Namrud were given a lot of boons on the earth because it would cause them to increase their rebellion so that they will have more punishment in the Hereafter. In a verse, the reality is indicated by the statement “Those who reject Our Signs, We shall gradually visit with punishment, in ways they perceive not”. In fact, another meaning of istidraj is that it leads a person to his/her desire slowly, while throwing him/her into a disaster without warning.
Badiuzzaman Said Nursi who says “Wonder-work and istidraj are opposite to each other in meaning” explains the issue as follows:
“A wonder-work is an act of Allah’s, like a miracle. And the owner of the wonder-work knows that it is from Allah and also knows that He oversees him. His belief in Allah increases. However, sometimes he is aware of his wonder-works with the permission of Allah and sometimes he is not. The latter is better and safer for him.”
“Istidraj consists of revealing the unknown during unawareness and displaying weird acts. However, the ego and the arrogance of the person who shows istidraj grows so much that he starts to recite the verse, the translation of which is ‘This fortune is given to me only because of a knowledge that I have’ like Qarun because he attributes the istidraj to himself and his own power.”
“However, if that evolvement is due to depurating of his lower-self and enlightening of his heart, there is not a significant difference between the owner of istidraj and owner of wonder-works.”
“Those who totally reach non-existence in Allah’s existence can also reveal unknown events with Allah’s permission. And they perceive events with their senses which have become non-existent in Allah’s existence. It is obviously different from istidraj. In fact, the brightness of the secrets revealed cannot be compared to the darkness of hypocrites.”
On the other hand, istidraj is closely related to witchcraft. The experts of istidraj show what was not done through witchcraft as if it was done. For instance, though they do not eat glass and do not jab enormous needles on their bodies, people think they do so. As it is also stated by Imam Rabbani, this verse clearly describes the position of istidraj people:
“And they think that they have something (to stand upon). No, indeed! They are but liars! The Evil One has got the better of them: so he has made them lose the remembrance of God. They are the Party of the Evil One.”
In conclusion, we can say that marvelous things such as eating glass or jabbing enormous needles on their bodies done by people who do not obey Allah and desire things which Allah forbade, are not wonder-works but just istidraj. And even if they obey Allah, Imam Rabbani considers their works as istidraj because they do it in order to show off and become famous. A real saint shows a wonder-work when needed as a kind blessing from Allah, not to show off.
In this sense, we should not esteem the low ones who do such things in order to deceive people, gain some interests and gain a fake fame. Those works of them should not be confused with saints’ wonder-works.

BASICS OF ISLAM: SUPPLICATION(DUA): PART 18
There are so many verses of supplication in Holy Quran. Some of the transliterations of those are given below: What they said (when they encountered the enemy) was: "Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and any wasteful act we may have done in our duty, and set our feet firm, and help us to victory over the disbelieving people!" (Al-Imran Surah, 3:147) "Our Lord! Indeed We have heard a caller calling to faith, saying: Believe in your Lord!, so we did believe. Our Lord, forgive us, then, our sins, and blot out from us our evil deeds, and take us to You in death in the company of the truly godly and virtuous. "Our Lord! Grant us what You have promised us through Your Messengers. Do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection; indeed You never break Your promise." (Al-Imran Surah, 3:193, 194) "And do not disgrace me on the Day when all people will be raised up to life... (Ash-Shuara Surah, 26:87) And among them are those who pray, "Our Lord, grant us in the world what is good, and in the Hereafter what is good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." (Al-Baqarah Surah, 2:201) Those (the God-revering, pious) pray: "Our Lord, we do indeed believe, so forgive us our sins and guard us against the punishment of the Fire." Those who are persevering (in misfortune and steadfast in fulfilling Gods commandments and in refraining from sins), and truthful (in their words and actions, and true to their covenants), and devoutly obedient, and who spend (out of what God has provided for them, in His way and for the needy), and who implore Gods forgiveness before daybreak. (Al-Imran Surah, 3:16, 17)
And who entreat (whether after the Prayers or at other times): "Our Lord! Ward off from us the punishment of Hell; its punishment is surely constant anguish: (Al-Furqan Surah, 25:65) At that point, Zachariah turned to his Lord in prayer and said: "My Lord, bestow upon me out of Your grace a good, upright offspring. Truly, You are the Hearer of prayer." (Al-Imran Surah, 3:38) "My Lord! Make me one who establishes the Prayer in conformity with its conditions, and (likewise) from my offspring (those who are not wrongdoers), Our Lord, and accept my prayer! (Ibrahim Surah, 14:40) You alone do We worship and from You alone do we seek help. Guide us to the Straight Path, The Path of those whom You have favored, not of those who have incurred (Your) wrath (punishment and condemnation), nor of those who are astray. (Al-Fatiha Surah, 1:5-7) "Our Lord! Make us Muslims, submissive to You, and of our offspring a community Muslim, submissive to You. Show us our rites of worship (including particularly the rites of the Pilgrimage) and accept our repentance (for our inability to worship You as worshipping You requires). Surely You are the One Who accepts repentance and returns it with liberal forgiveness and additional reward, the All-Compassionate. "Our Lord! Raise up among that community a Messenger of their own, reciting to them Your Revelations, and instructing them in the Book (that You will reveal to him) and the Wisdom, and purifying them (of false beliefs and doctrines, of sins and all kinds of uncleanness). Surely You are the All-Glorious with irresistible might, the All-Wise." (Al-Baqarah Surah, 2:128, 129) (They entreat God:) "Our Lord, do not let our hearts swerve after You have guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Your Presence. Surely You are the All-Bestowing. (Al-Imran Surah, 3:8) "Our Lord! We believe in what You have sent down and we follow the Messenger, so write us down among the witnesses (of Your Oneness and Lordship, and of the truth You have revealed)." (Al-Imran Surah, 3:53) The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers; each one believes in God, and His angels, and His Books, and His Messengers: "We make no distinction between any of His Messengers (in believing in them)." And they say: "We have heard (the call to faith in God) and (unlike some of the people of Moses) obeyed. Our Lord, grant us Your forgiveness, and to You is the homecoming." (O believers, if you are worried that God will take every soul to account even for what the soul keeps within it of intentions and plans, know that) God burdens no soul except within its capacity: in its favor is whatever (good) it earns, and against it whatever (evil) it merits. (So, pray thus to your Lord:) "Our Lord, take us not to task if we forget or make mistake. Our Lord, lay not on us a burden such as You laid on those gone before us. Our Lord, impose not on us what we do not have the power to bear. And overlook our faults, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Guardian and Owner (to Whom We entrust our affairs and on Whom we rely) so help us and grant us victory against the disbelieving people!" (Al-Baqarah Surah, 2:285, 286) "My Lord! Make me one who establishes the Prayer in conformity with its conditions, and (likewise) from my offspring (those who are not wrongdoers), Our Lord, and accept my prayer! "Our Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and all the believers, on the Day on which the Reckoning will be established." (Ibrahim Surah, 14:40, 41)
And who entreat (whether after the Prayers or at other times): "Our Lord! Ward off from us the punishment of Hell; its punishment is surely constant anguish. And who say: "Our Lord! Grant us that our spouses and offspring may be a means of happiness for us, and enable us to lead others in piety (to become a means of the promotion of piety and virtue)." (Al-Furqan Surah, 25:65, 74) Now (among the good deeds) We have enjoined on human is the best treatment towards his parents. His mother bore him in pain, and in pain did she give him birth. The bearing of him and suckling of him (until weaned) is thirty months, until when he has reached his full manhood and reached forty years of age, he says: "My Lord! Arouse me that I may be thankful for all Your favors (life, health, sustenance, faith, and submission, and more) that You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do good, righteous deeds with which You will be pleased, and grant me righteous offspring (so that they treat me righteously, as I treat my parents). I have turned to You, and I am one of those who have submitted to You." (Al-Ahqaf Surah, 46:15)
