Cassy Web (Dakota Johnson) es una conductora de ambulancias que trabaja mano a mano con Ben Parker (Adam Scott). Ambos hacen muy buen equipo y llegan a ser amigos en el ámbito personal, aunque Cassy tiene algunos problemas para relacionarse, ya que su madre murió durante su parto y se crio en casas de acogida.

Ben y Cassy salvan a un hombre de caer con su coche por un puente, pero la joven se queda dentro cayendo al río. Ahí Cassy tiene una revelación, ya que estuvo 3 minutos en parada cardiaca, y tiene la visión de una tela de araña como conexión.

Casandra se siente rara, tiene la impresión de que está en un déjà vu constante, tanto que cuando va al baby shower de la cuñada de Ben, siente que ya ha vivido todo eso. Richard, el hermano de Ben está de misión con el ejército y él se hace cargo de ella en los últimos meses de su gestación.

Un amigo en común muere y Cassy tiene que coger un tren para ir al funeral, pero tiene una nueva visión en la que un hombre entra y mata a tres adolescentes muy concretas.

Paralelamente, vemos un flashback de la madre de Casandra, que está buscando una especie concreta de arañas que tienen poderes curativos. Allí es traicionada por su acompañante que dispara a varios de su grupo y a ella también, provocándole el parto.

Unos locales que usan el poder de las arañas la ayudan a parir y a despedirse de su bebé antes de fallecer.

Casandra está muy enfadada con su madre por ponerse en peligro en sus últimos meses de su embarazo.

Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) es el acompañante de la madre de Casandra que la traiciona robándole la araña curadora. Ahora ha abusado de esos poderes para volverse maligno y una especie de Spider-Man malvado, que lo único que quieres es beneficiarse y usar esos poderes en beneficio propio.

Este hombre tiene una visión donde tres mujeres con trajes de superheroínas y superpoderes lo atacan y matan por toda su maldad, cosa que se niega a aceptar, por lo que decide usar todos sus recursos para darles caza y matarlas ahora que están en la adolescencia.

Aquí se mezclan ambas historias, y Casandra salva a las tres adolescentes del tren, pese a que ellas no se ven muy convencidas.

Gracias a las visiones decide viajar donde su madre falleció, allí descubre a la tribu local que le ayudó a nacer y le da todas las respuestas que espera. Teniendo una visión muy vivida de su madre.

En la visión, Cassy descubre que su madre se pone en peligro porque en una visita con la médico donde le dice que su bebé tiene una enfermedad mortal y que morirá, por eso se pone en peligro después de investigar sobre las arañas y es que esa especie pica a su madre antes de parir.

Casandra salva a las tres jóvenes varias veces de las manos de Ezekiel con sus poderes de premonición. Estas jóvenes son:

Sydney Sweeney como Julia Cornwall: Una adolescente rara que vive con su padre y su madrastra tras la partida de su madre. Las visiones futuras de ella muestran que posee poderes similares a los de Spider-Man, así como una red psiónica.

Isabela Merced como Anya Corazón: Una adolescente inteligente obligada a vivir sola después de la deportación de su padre. Las visiones futuras de ella muestran que posee poderes similares a los de Spider-Man, y tiene discos arrojadizos que pueden regresar a ella.

Celeste O'Connor como Mattie Franklin: Una adolescente de familia adinerada, pero con padres ausentes. Las visiones futuras de ella muestran que posee poderes similares a los de Spider-Man y tiene brazos similares a los de «Iron Spider» como parte de su traje.

Para protegerlas, Casandra las deja con Ben, pero Mary, su cuñada, se pone de parto, de su sobrino Peter Parker. Pero son atacadas por Ezekiel y en el último momento son salvadas todas por Casandra, que llega volando en una ambulancia, consciente de todo lo que pasó y de lo que el hombre le hizo a su madre.

Ahora está conectada con sus poderes y le dice al hombre que su futuro es inevitable porque es ella. Él le cuenta la verdad de su visión, que las chicas tienen superpoderes y que van a por él, y Casandra se sorprende por lo de los poderes, pero no se deja llevar y gracias a sus visiones deja que Ezkiel muera.

En ese accidente Casandra queda ciega y en silla de ruedas, tal cual como en los comics, desarrollando el personaje como la mujer con una red de visión que se convierte en la maestra de las tres adolescentes para que se desarrollen en el mundo de Spider-man.

Juniorpress blikt terug

Om maar meteen met een bekentenis te beginnen: ik was een redelijke laatbloeier qua X-Men. Aan het begin van mijn carrière als comicverzamelaar lag de focus vooral op Batman en Spider-Man (en ja, ook G.I.Joe en de Turtles 🤓). Pas in 1993 of 1994 maakte ik dankzij de X-Men: The Animated Series tekenfilmserie écht kennis met de mutanten. Voorheen had ik al wel eens een los nummer van de X-Mannen doorbladerd dat mee in één van die Juniorpress voordeelpakketjes zat, maar dat leek me toen toch vooral onbegrijpelijke meuk. Vreemd genoeg vond ik New Mutants, en dan vooral de Spookbeer saga, toen wél al geweldig. Maar in '94 kwam Juniorpress plots met X-Mannen Avonturen, de comicversie van de tekenfilmserie. En, oh boy, ging er toen een (mutanten)wereld voor me open. Veel, heel veel, X-Mannen en aanverwante comics volgden snel in mijn verzameling. 😍

Er was echter nog meer leuk aan X-Mannen Avonturen dan dat het mijn start was met de X-Men. Er stonden ook zeer fijne redactionele stukjes in. Zo lazen we in nummer 1 en 2 al meer over de overige comics van de X-Mannen. Maar in nummers 3, 4 en 5 stonden 'Juniorpress blikt terug' stukjes. Heerlijk nostalgische lectuur van toenmalige vertalers Peter de Bruin en Sytse S. Algera die ik jullie niet wil onthouden:

De meesten van jullie weten ongetwijfeld dat X-Mannen Avonturen slechts één van de vele series is die Juniorpress momenteel uitgeeft. Maar niet iedereen zal zich realiseren dat JP nu alweer 15 jaar de Nederlandstalige uitgaven van jullie favoriete superheldenstrips verzorgt. Daarom beginnen we dit nummer met een overzicht van alle series die JP in de loop der jaren heeft uitgegeven. We nemen jullie terug mee in de tijd...

(I) 1979 - 1982

In 1979 besloot Juniorpress het gat te vullen dat uitgeverij Classics enkele jaren daarvoor had achtergelaten. Want ook in de jaren '60 en '70 waren de avonturen van Spiderman en de X-Mannen al in het Nederlands te lezen geweest.

Tegen het einde van de jaren '70 waren alle Nederlandstalige Marvel-series echter opgeheven. JP begon voorzichtig met een éénmalige uitgave. De hoofdrollen hierin waren weggelegd voor Spiderman en de Hulk. De muurkruiper en de groene gigant waren ook degenen die in 1979 als eersten hun eigen serie kregen bij JP. In De Spectaculaire Spiderman #1 werd een verhaal geplaatst waarin een uitgebreide flashback was opgenomen (geschreven door Bill Mantlo en getekend door Sal Buscema, nu bekend van Peter Parker). Op die manier konden alle oude en nieuwe lezers het verhaal gemakkelijk oppikken. Met inmiddels 180 uitgaven is De Spectaculaire Spiderman de langst lopende serie!

De andere JP-pionier was de Hulk. Dankzij de populaire T.V.-serie met Bill Bixby en Lou Ferringo mocht de met gammastralen bestookte wetenschapper zich verheugen in een grote schare fans. De Verbijsterende Hulk #1 was dan ook het begin van een 12-jarig groen JP-avontuur (39 maandelijkse uitgaven en 32 specials)! En ook dat verhaal werd getekend door Sal Buscema, die het grootste deel van die twaalf jaar bij de serie bleef. Zou het toeval zijn?

Twee maanden na de start van De Spectaculaire Spiderman en De Verbijsterende Hulk zagen nog twee razend populaire Marvel-series het levenslicht: Fantastic Four en De Vergelders. (Driemaal raden wie het verhaal met de flashback in Fantastic Four #1 tekende...!) De FF ging een schitterende toekomst tegemoet (36 maandelijkse uitgaven en inmiddels al bijna 50 specials), maar voor De Vergelders viel al na 10 maanden het doek. JP dacht meer succes te boeken met De Verdedigers, een serie over het meest onwaarschijnlijke superheldenteam. Deze serie, vrijwel geheel getekend door de geroutineerde Don Perlin, maakte 56 uitgaven vol en werd in 1985 stopgezet.

1979 was een goed jaar voor superheldenstrips. JP was namelijk niet de enige die Nederlandstalige uitgaven op de markt bracht. Oberon publiceerde in dat jaar een aantal superhelden-pockets en -albums van de Fantastic Four en de Vergelders en startte pocketseries van Spiderman en de Hulk. Superhelden deden het destijds zo goed in albumformaat dat JP het Spiderman Album in 1981 van Oberon overnam en tussen 1979 en 1982 26 Hulk-albums uitgaf. In de eerste jaren liet JP haar series zich rustig ontwikkelen en introduceerde relatief weinig nieuwe titels. In 1980 ging nog de 11-delige serie She-Hulk van start. She-Hulk was de eerste tweemaandelijkse JP-serie. Het eerste deel werd geschreven door niemand minder dan Stan Lee. In 1982 kreeg ook de vrouwelijke tegenhanger van Spiderman haar eigen blad. Van Spiderwoman verschenen 19 uitgaven.

Het leek JP het verstandigst de in Nederland nog minder bekende superhelden eerst 'uit te proberen' in de series Marvel Superhelden en Marvel Special. In deze series werden zogenaamde 'team-ups' van steeds andere helden gepubliceerd, zodat de lezer met zoveel mogelijk personages kon kennismaken. Marvel Special bracht het tussen 1981 en 1983 tot 18 uitgaven. Marvel Superhelden bestaat inmiddels bijna 14 jaar en bereikte onlangs het 60e nummer!

De laatste serie die in 1982 begon, was Star Wars. Het succes van de film 'The Empire Strikes Back' leverde Luke Skywalker en konsoorten een eigen Marvel-serie op, die het in Nederland volhield tot 1988.

(II) 1983 - 1989

1983 was alleen al een belangrijk jaar, omdat er toen een groot aantal nieuwe series van start gingen. In januari kregen we er een tweede Spiderman-serie bij: Peter Parker. Deze serie bestaat nog steeds en is nu ongeveer aan het 140e nummer toe. Later dat jaar begon zelfs een derde Spidey-serie: Spiderman Extra. Hierin werden allerlei losse Spiderman-verhalen opgenomen. Spiderman Extra eindigde vijf jaar later met twintig uitgaven. 1983 was ook het jaar waarin de jullie welbekende X-Mannen hun eigen serie kregen bij JP. Inmiddels is het 150e nummer bijna bereikt en zijn 's werelds machtigste mutanten razend populair geworden (in Amerika zijn er op dit moment al zo'n twaalf maandelijkse X-series!). Maar JP liet het hier niet bij. Nog datzelfde jaar verschenen bijvoorbeeld de eerste delen van de series Superhelden Parade, Filmspecial en Indiana Jones (inderdaad, dezelfde als in de succesvolle films!). Ondanks al deze nieuwe projecten vergat JP niet aandacht te besteden aan de series die al wat langer meeliepen. In de eerste jaren had men de beste verhalen uit de Amerikaanse series uitgezocht en deze in willekeurige volgorde in de Nederlandse uitgaven geplaatst. Maar na een tijdje werd besloten de Amerikaanse series in de juiste volgorde uit te geven, zodat de verhalen beter te volgen waren. Een andere verandering die in 1983 plaatsvond, was het feit dat een aantal series niet meer maandelijks, maar driemaandelijks gingen verschijnen. Van Star Wars, de Fantastic Four en de Hulk verschenen vanaf dat moment superdikke specials van 64 pagina's. Bovendien keerden de Vergelders terug in hun eigen Special-serie, die nu al bijna 50 nummers telt! De series die nog wel maandelijks verschenen, begonnen inmiddels aardig in te lopen op hun Amerikaanse tegenhangers. Op veler verzoek werd besloten maandelijkse comics precies zo uit te geven als in Amerika: 22 pagina's per uitgave. De resterende tien werden sindsdien gevuld met zogenaamde 'Limited Series', korte Amerikaanse series van ongeveer vier delen. Een groot deel van deze Limited Series is later in gebundelde vorm herdrukt. Dat jullie, lezers, erg belangrijk zijn voor JP, werd in de loop van de jaren '80 steeds duidelijker. Om jullie nog beter van dienst te zijn, werd in de Spiderman-series op de binnenkant van het omslag een redactionele pagina afgedrukt. Hierin werd allerlei informatie over alle JP-series gegeven. Later werd er ook een pagina ingeruimd voor de vele brieven die jullie stuurden. Inmiddels zijn er in bijna elke JP-serie redaktionele pagina's te vinden.

Tot besluit van deze aflevering kijken we nog even naar een aantal andere series die in de jaren '80 van start gingen. Dat waren er echter zoveel, dat we ze hier onmogelijk allemaal apart kunnen behandelen! In 1984 begon het negendelige mega-epos Geheime Oorlogen, waarin bijna alle Marvel helden een rol speelden. Een jaar later verscheen er een vervolg op deze serie, Geheime Oorlogen II.

Ook in die tijd waren Spiderman en de X-Mannen al het meest populair. Het is dan ook niet vreemd dat er in de loop der jaren steeds meer Spidey-series en mutanten-series bij zijn gekomen. Zo werd in 1985 Web van Spiderman aan de series toegevoegd. Hiervan zijn al bijna 100 delen verschenen. In datzelfde jaar kregen ook de New Mutants hun eigen blad. De New Mutants, een groepje jonge en onervaren mutanten, hadden eigenlijk de nieuwe X-Mannen moeten worden. Hun lotgevallen stonden beschreven in de 21 New Mutants-uitgaven die tussen 1985 en 1988 verschenen. We willen jullie tenslotte wijzen op de series G.I.Joe en De Transformers, die het vooral bij de jongere lezers goed deden. De Transformers dankten hun sukses, net als X-Mannen Avonturen nu, voor een groot deel aan een enorm populaire tekenfilmserie. Zowel De Transformers als G.I.Joe zijn overigens een paar jaar geleden beëindigd.

We hadden jullie graag nog iets verteld over de series Conan, Cloak&Dagger, Spiderman Klassiek, Hulk Liefhebbersserie, Marvel Strip en Judge Dredd, die ook allemaal in de jaren '80 verschenen, maar hier hebben we helaas geen ruimte meer voor.

(III) 1990 - 1994

Al vanaf het moment dat hij voor het eerst verscheen in een JP-strip, is de man met de evenredige kracht van een spin, beter bekend als Spiderman, verreweg de populairste superheld in Nederland en Vlaanderen. De oudste Spiderman-serie, De Spectaculaire Spiderman, is met meer dan 180 uitgaven inmiddels het vlaggeschip van JP geworden. Spidey is bij de lezers zo geliefd, dat één avontuur per maand al lang niet meer voldoende is. Sinds een jaar of tien zijn er dan ook drie maandelijkse Spiderman-series. In 1991 kwam er nog een vierde serie bij. Todd McFarlane, één van de bekendste Amerikaanse tekenaars, tekende vroeger een tijdje De Spectaculaire Spiderman. Hij werd zo suksesvol, dat er speciaal voor hem een vierde Spiderman-serie werd gestart, die hij mocht tekenen én schrijven. JP noemde deze serie Spiderman Special. Inmiddels werkt McFarlane allang niet meer aan Spiderman, maar de serie bestaat nog steeds. Van Spiderman Special verschijnt in 1995 elke twee maanden een nieuw nummer.

Een held die al heel lang geleden als schurk werd geïntroduceerd in een verhaal van Spiderman is de Punisher. Nadat zijn gezin in koelen bloede werd vermoord, besloot Frank Castle in zijn eentje de strijd tegen de misdaad aan te binden. Zijn methoden zijn echter heel anders dan die van de meeste helden. Hij deinst er namelijk niet voor terug om zijn tegenstanders zonder pardon een kopje kleiner te maken. Met zijn meedogenloze aanpak viel hij aan het begin van de jaren '90 zodanig bij de lezers in de smaak, dat hij bij JP een eigen (driemaandelijkse) serie kreeg, waarvan inmiddels bijna twintig nummers zijn verschenen. Hoewel klassieke helden als Spiderman en de Vergelders het goed bleven doen, konden ze niet tippen aan de populariteit van de X-Mannen. Dank zij zijn ruwe imago groeide Wolverine, de met met de adamantium klauwen, razendsnel uit tot de meest geliefde X-Man. Hij kreeg dan ook in 1990, tegelijk met de Punisher, zijn eigen JP-serie. Toen de oorspronkelijke X-Mannen (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman en Archangel) na een uitstapje bij de groep X-Factor terugkeerden bij het team, werd de groep zo groot dat professor Xavier besloot er twee teams van te maken. En je snapt het al, sindsdien zijn er ook twee X-Mannen-series! JP geeft de nieuwe X-Mannen-serie nu al ruim twee jaar uit onder de naam X-Mannen Special. Denk echter niet dat de honger naar X-Mannen-verhalen hiermee gestild was! Toen ook de voormalige leider van de New Mutants, Cable, een soloserie kreeg, bleek hier in Nederland en Vlaanderen zoveel vraag naar te zijn dat JP maar één ding kon doen... Op dit moment zou het vijfde nummer van Cable in de winkel moeten liggen. In de jaren '80 verschenen de eerste grote cross-overs, verhalen waarin superhelden uit een groot aantal verschillende series voorkwamen. De Geheime Oorlogen was hiervan het meest tot de verbeelding sprekende voorbeeld. Ook in de jaren '90 gaf JP een aantal mega-cross-overs uit. In de series Infinity Gauntlet (1992), Infinity War (1993) en Infinity Crusade (1994) raakten bijna alle bekende superhelden verwikkeld in avonturen van kosmische proporties. Hoewel de Infinity-trilogie nu definitief achter de rug is, kunnen we de komende jaren ongetwijfeld nog meer van dit soort verhalen tegemoet zien. Misschien is X-Mannen Avonturen je eerste kennismaking met de strips van Juniorpress. Als dat zo is, zul je na het lezen van deze rubriek in de gaten hebben dat er nog veel meer leuke en spannende stripverhalen te koop zijn! Veel van de oudere uitgaven kun je nog nabestellen en van alle JP-series ligt het laatste nummer overal in de winkels. Ik wens je alvast heel veel leesplezier!

Big 2 Comics Terminology for Beginners

As a kid trying to get into comics there were a lot of terms being used in regards to Marvel and DC that I didn’t really understand. When I would ask other more knowledgeable people who had been around longer to explain, I typically got condescending looks of pity. “Oh God a newbie” was the thought clearly flowing through their head. Those in the know didn’t have any interest in explaining to those outside how things worked, all the better to keep the fandom “pure”.

In the interest of providing an explanation for terms crucial to understanding how the Big 2 operate, and as a way to kick off this blog, I thought I’d try my hand at explaining what the many words used when talking about DC and Marvel actually mean. That way when I use the words you know what I mean and you’re not confused by how I’m using these words.

Bear in mind that some people will use multiple words interchangeably, all the better to confuse you with. I believe the following definitions will provide the most clarity however.

Continuity - This word is crucial to understanding the words that follow so we’ll start with it. At it’s most basic, continuity means the stories that are acknowledged and built upon by the stories that come after as having “happened”. For example, over at Marvel, Stan Lee and Steve Dikto’s origin issue of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 is still in continuity. When writers and artists do flashbacks to Peter Parker’s origin, that issue is what they are referencing. In contrast, the Siegel and Shuster Action Comics #1 issue that contained Superman’s origin is no longer in continuity. Superman was not found by a passing motorist, raised in an orphanage, and had his powers as a baby. That’s no longer in continuity, stories in the mainline won’t reference it as having “happened”.

Continuity is a tricky beast at the Big 2, warped by reboots, retcons, reveals, and just plain old passage of time. The Big 2 are obsessed with trying to keep continuity accessible and understandable to new readers, hardcore fans are obsessed with making sure their favorite stories are referenced and maintained as “important” and having “happened”. This tug of war, as you might imagine, causes problems.

Canon - This word designates the stories that are in continuity. A “canon” story happened, “matters”, is referenced to, and is built upon.

Reboot - Here’s a big one. If you’re a fan of DC you know this word. You’ve probably heard it used several times to describe everything from the New 52, to DC You, to Rebirth, to Infinite Frontier. However the only one to me that actually qualifies as a reboot is the New 52.

Reboots take a well known franchise and starts it over from the beginning. Basically it’s as if a franchise is debuting for the first time with none of the previous stories mattering at all. Or at least that’s supposed to be the intention, in practice it’s not that simple. There are actually two sub-types of reboots: hard and soft.

Hard Reboot - This is what a reboot is “supposed” to be. A clean slate upon which writers can start over from scratch. None of the previous stories are taken to have happened, none of the previous character development is in play, the old relationship statuses aren’t where the characters are now, characters can have any of their traits (race, sexuality, gender, personality, etc) changed, etc. In short anything goes. This is what DC did for Justice League for the New 52. The team had a totally new origin, a new roster where a mainstay like Martian Manhunter was swapped out for Cyborg, Cyborg was never a Titan and was a founding League member, etc. Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg all got hard reboots.

Soft Reboot - This is where things get confusing. Basically it’s a reboot... but not really. The intent is the same, start over, but some stories carry over, some character development holds true still, etc. Basically trying to have your cake and eat it too. With the New 52, both Batman and Green Lantern got soft rebooted. Bruce was no longer and older 30-40 year old guy, now he was in his late twenties like the rest of the League, and all his old pre-Flashpoint continuity got carried over, except somehow compressed to have taken place in 5 years. Also he never wore the old costumes (such as the old blue cape and cowl with the yellow oval Bat-symbol). Green Lantern carried over likewise, Hal was younger and everything from Johns run or referenced by Johns run still “happened”. Somehow. Even though stuff like Blackest Night didn’t make any damn sense anymore, that happened, just not the way it actually happened in the Blackest Night issues you read.

You may notice that the two franchises that didn’t get rebooted were the two that were doing just fine Pre-Flashpoint sales-wise and critics-wise. Shocker I know. Reboots are intended to revive struggling franchises that are suffering from creative decay, and are in need of dramatic shake-ups.

Relaunch - Often confused with reboot, this word actually means something different. Relaunches typically aren’t about wholesale erasure of continuity. Instead what they mean is DC and Marvel take a bunch of their ongoing series and restart the numbering while also swapping around the creative teams. So if you’re reading Hulk #210 written by Al Ewing and drawn by Aaron Kuder (this is just a made up example), when the relaunch hits, next month you may be reading Hulk #1 by Ewing and Kuder, or you might be reading Unstoppable Hulk #1 by Ewing and Kuder, or Ewing and a new artist, or maybe even a new writer and artist creative team all together!

Very clear and non-confusing I know. However the previous run you were reading before the relaunch still happened, and is still in continuity. Relaunches are typically used to advertise big new changes in direction. Stuff like Otto Octavious becoming Spider-Man or Jane Foster becoming Thor, that’s stuff that typically leads to a new #1, at least at Marvel.

Marvel NOW! is an example of a relaunch. Bunch of old ongoings got relaunched with new #1′s, creative teams got shuffled around, and also new series got announced which is typical for relaunches. Note that reboots also typically coincide with relaunches, as happened at DC with the New 52, but not always. The Post Crisis reboot did not result in Action Comics or Detective Comics getting relaunched for example.

Retcon - These are when stories go back and change the events of previous stories. Stuff that was previously thought to be true no longer is, relationships are changed, characters are modified, etc. However the stories still happened, just not the way we thought they did when we read them. Perfect example of this is one of the most hated retcons ever, One More Day. This story ended with Peter and MJ never having been married. All the previous stories still happened, but they were just boyfriend/girlfriend living together and not husband and wife. It’s the perfect example of how retcons can piss readers off.

But retcons don’t always have to piss people off. One of the best received retcons was Alan Moore retconning that Swamp Thing was a living plant who absorbed Alec’s memories and merely thought he was Alec. In reality he was something else entirely. All of the previous Swamp Thing stories still happened, they were still canon and in continuity, but our understanding of them changed.

Reveal - This is when the readers are made aware of something that changes the context of the story they’ve been reading. All retcons are reveals but not all reveals are retcons. How to explain the difference? Here’s how I define the difference between the two:

A retcon is when a writer changes something that the writer previously thought to be true. This could be one writer retconning another, or a writer retconning themselves. For example George Lucas retconned that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father Anakin. That was not the intention when he made A New Hope, the two were separate characters. Another retcon is when Geoff Johns revealed that Superboy/Kon-El was the hybrid clone of Superman and Lex Luthor. That was not the original intention when Kon was created by the writers who created him.

A reveal is when the writer changes something that the readers thought to be true. A previously heroic appearing character is actually a villain in disguise, and they were always intended as such. See Terra in Wolfman and Perez’s Teen Titans for an example.

I think that’s enough for one post, I may make another intro post to explain other terminology, but this feels like a pretty good place to stop for now.

A Lythikan Liaison

After the death of Jackson Walker, the young King’s Guardsman Bastien Lykel accompanies the Royal family to Lythikos in mid December.

1 At a Loose End

Bastien Lykel stamped his feet to dislodge the packed snow from his boots as he entered the staff quarters at Lythikos Lodge. The Royal family was spending some time before Christmas in the duchy and taking young Olivia back to the Palace for the festivities. It meant half of the King’s guard, recently deprived of its popular captain, Jackson Walker, travelled with the King and his two sons. Bastien had been Jackson’s protege, and the new Captain had his own favourite, so his duties had diminished somewhat. Bianca, Drake and Savannah had remained at the Palace, as Bianca didn’t seem to have the will or desire to uproot the bereaved children from their home, despite the attractions of skating and building snowmen. To be truthful, it was dubious as to whether the family would stay in Cordonia, and Bastien thought it likely that they would return to Texas.

So he had leisure time that he barely knew how to spend, as his shift was over and Captain Parker had told him he wouldn’t be needed until the return journey. He wondered why he’d been brought along at all, knowing that his time would have been better spent supporting the Walker family. He suspected that Constantine wanted him to cut his ties with them in order to concentrate on his job. But if that was the case, Parker should be keeping him busy, not laying him off.

He sighed as he took his coat off and hung it where the snowflakes would evaporate in the warm air of the entrance hall. He went to the canteen and took a bowl of stew and a crust of warm bread to a table looking out over the frozen lake. A few of the Lodge staff were also eating their evening meal but left him alone, which suited him fine. The Lythikans knew how to make good hearty food, he’d give them that. He disliked their spiced drinks and the nog turned his stomach, but the red wine was robust and strong and the beer was tolerable in moderation.

He refused the hard spiced cookies that were handed out from table to table by a dour serving woman who leered at him and winked broadly, asking if he wanted someone to warm his bed for him or if he preferred a hot water bottle. Her tone made it plain that such a device was only for weaklings and children. He glared at her and replied he was perfectly capable of making his own arrangements and made his way to the bar, where a few of his fellow guards sat drinking. Lewis sat alone at a table at the edge of the room, able to see all that went on, as a good guard should. Bastien went over to join him, seeing his glass was almost empty.

‘Hey Bas, how are you holding up?’ Lewis asked. The two men had joined the Guard in the same intake, and had helped each other through some of the more arduous training exercises. Bastien had finished top of his year with Lewis a close second, and the two men had formed a strong bond.

‘I’d be just fine if Parker gave me more to do’ he grumbled ‘I’d far rather be working than told to go and relax.’ He eyed his companion’s glass of Skullcracker ale, making a resolution to have no more than two pints himself before he went back to his tiny room. He may not be working the next morning, but he could do without the crashing hangover Lythican alcohol gave him nonetheless.

‘Sleeping okay?’ Lewis knew that Bastien suffered flashbacks from the assassination attempt that had taken his mentor’s life. Bastien shrugged.

‘A little better’ he admitted ‘It’s too cold to get up and wander around so at least I stay in my bed until breakfast’

‘I wouldn’t admit the cold to the natives’ Lewis said in an undertone ‘They make them hardy out here. It’s only been a decade or so since they stopped putting newborns out in the snow to test how strong they are.’ Bastien snorted

‘It’s rumours like that which keep relations between Lythikos and the rest of Cordonia at an ‘us and them’ level.’ Lewis shook his head and drained his glass of ale.

‘Don’t look now, but those two over by the bar have been eyeing us up since you came in’ Lewis said with an almost imperceptible nod. As he had said, two women were looking in their direction, no subterfuge in their appraisal of the King’s men. They were both well built, one of them taller, close to Bastien’s six foot four inches and had pale skin and rich auburn hair.

‘I’ve already been offered a bed warmer, maybe I should take one of them up on it and get it over with’ Bastien mused.

‘You know what Lythicans are like, you’ll be in for a hard ride’ Lewis warned him. He handed his glass to Bastien, who stood up to go and order ale.

‘I’ve not much better to do’ he said ‘I should make the most of my down time’ He strode to the bar and put the glass down. The bartender raised his eyebrows at him.

‘Another pint of Skullcracker and whatever these two are having’ he nodded at the two women. The taller one held eye contact as she replied.

‘Are you sure you can handle that ale, King’s man?’ she asked ‘Most foreigners find just the one enough to send them to their knees’

‘Foreign? I’m Cordonian just like I presume you are’ he replied ‘Or are you claiming Lythikos is independent of the Crown?’ She frowned

‘Last I heard, Constantine insisted he’s King, and Duchess Lucretia hasn’t made a counter claim. Yet. And we call any non Lythican foreign, even if they come from the next village outside the duchy boundary.’ she replied acidly, but indicated to the barman that she’d accept Bastien’s offer. The other woman took two glasses of ale and went to join Lewis at his table.

‘So what part of Cordonia do you hail from, King’s man?’ she asked, as she took a healthy gulp of the ale that made Bastien hope he could match her without invoking the hangover.

‘My family comes from the capitol’ he said.

‘Oh yes, and what name do you go by?’

‘Lykel. Bastien Lykel’ She pursed her lips and nodded

‘A distinguished name. You might have a claim to the throne yourself if you can prove your lineage.’

‘Power doesn’t interest me’ he said, shaking his head ‘Attending banquets and balls and talking to trade delegates isn’t my idea of a fulfilling lifestyle’ He took a gulp of the thick ale. ‘I take it you’re Lythican?’

‘Naturally. The name’s Marcia. Marcia Wolfsbane’

‘That’s a fine surname too. Have you got links to the Nevrakis?’

‘Only in service, but then doesn’t most of the duchy?’

‘What do you do for a living?’ he asked curiously, and she laughed out loud, slapping her palm on the bar.

‘Can’t you tell? I’m in the same line of business as yourself. I’m part of the Lythican Guard. I saw you and your friend arrive with the Royal family’ She grinned at having bested him. Taking another swig from her glass, she nodded at him appraisingly, her gaze raking him from head to toe ‘You want to come back to my place and fuck?’ she asked. Bastien swiftly got over his chagrin at missing her occupation and gave her a slow smile. He liked directness, it left no room for misinterpretation and he was relieved that she wasn’t interested in drinking herself into a stupor. It had been a while since he’d had anything but brief encounters and wondered if this would be more than a one night stand. It wasn’t important, his job didn’t allow for romantic commitment although Lewis had a steady partner.

‘Sure, why not. Let me finish this first’ he replied.

Ten minutes later he found himself walking beside the tall woman along the narrow streets of the town that served the lodge and ski slopes. The Lythicans had found there was money to be made from winter sports in peace time and had spared no expense setting up resorts in the hills. Between the low log cabins the snow turned to slush underfoot and he was thankful for his good leather boots and thick socks that kept out the cold and wet.

‘You do realise that a couple of decades ago you wouldn’t have dared to be alone with the likes of me?’ she pointed out ‘Thank goodness for peacetime’

‘I like to think I’m a good judge of character’ he replied. ‘It’s my job to assess dangerous situations’ They trudged on for a while, passing other Lythicans walking to and fro in the darkening early evening.

‘Is it true you use those new tracking devices to keep tabs on each other?’ she asked curiously.

‘I wouldn’t tell you if we did.’ He said shortly. She turned down a dim side street which struck him as the sort of place that unwary travellers might be lured before being relieved of their valuables. Warily he scanned the shadows for lurkers as she strode on.

‘My home’s just down here, King’s man. I share the cabin with my friend back at the bar when we’re off the duty rotation. She’ll leave us alone for the night so you won’t have to worry about disturbing anyone.’

‘Does that depend on the willingness of my partner?’ he asked ‘He’s in a relationship, I’m not sure that he’ll bite’ Marcia shrugged as she stopped at one of the almost identical cabins and put her hand to the door. Bastien noted that it wasn’t locked, a sign either that there was no crime in the town, or that nobody would dare take anything from the occupants.

‘She’ll find someone or somewhere else’ The door swung open and she beckoned him in. ‘Boots off’ she ordered. Bastien bent to unfasten them and left them by the door next to hers and shrugged off his thick coat. The cabin was cool and smelled of spice and pine. She had already hung up her own coat and disappeared through a door off the lobby. He followed to find her kneeling by a wood burner setting a match to it. It took easily and the room was soon warming up.

‘You’ll take a hot drink?’ she asked

‘Only if it’s not spiced’ he replied ‘I prefer my drinks plain.’ She laughed

‘You’re missing out, King’s man’ she exclaimed ‘They warm the blood and heighten the senses’

‘No good if my stomach’s turned’ he said sourly ‘A nip of whiskey does the job very nicely’

‘In that case, hot chocolate with a dash of brandy. No spice’

‘That would be very welcome’ She disappeared, and he took stock of the room. He knew that the town was relatively new, extended to service the ski slopes, and the few traditional buildings were at the centre of the town, and here on the outskirts the buildings were less than five years old. The cabin walls were of dark logs that gave a sense of warmth, and the check curtains were thick and heavy. The furniture was mostly dark stained pine, modern but utilitarian. The couch and chairs were draped in woollen throws, the wooden floor augmented by thick rugs. Red was the predominant colour with accents of green and splashes of golden yellow. Shelves held books and trophies, and he went closer to examine the gleaming silver. Marcia re entered the room with two mugs. He turned to take his, nodding toward the trophies.

‘You have a lot of awards for markmanship’ he observed. She shrugged as he blew on his mug to cool the hot chocolate, plain as she had promised with no scent of spice and no cream, but an aroma of good brandy rose to his nostrils. He took a sip and felt it beginning to warm him from the inside.

‘I have plenty of time to practice, and the hunting in the woods is good’ She put her drink down and took the hem of her woollen jumper, pulling it up off and throwing it onto the couch, with a sigh that indicated that she was hot. She still wore a simple blouse and under vest and was well built, solid and muscular but with enough womanly curves to stir his desire. He knew Lythicans were hot blooded and very active in the bedroom with a casual attitude toward the number of partners they had at any one time, so he had come prepared with protection. Nonetheless, he had a question for her.

‘Are you currently in a relationship?’ he asked. She looked at him over her cup, her piercing blue eyes locking with his grey.

‘Only with my housemate. Are you?’

‘No, but I don’t want to cause any conflict’

‘You won’t’ she said ‘There’s nothing complicated about this unless you want it to be’

‘No, simple suits me just fine’ She put her cup down and moved closer.

‘You have milk on your moustache’ she said huskily, and leaned in to suck at his top lip. He groped to put his mug down on the table next to him, returning the kiss and putting his hand to the back of her neck.

‘Your hair is too long’ she said, reaching up to his forehead, but he gripped her wrist before she could touch it. She bit her lip ‘Someone could twist their fingers into it and control you’ Bastien realised with a flash why all the Lythican guard, male and female, had short cropped hair. He took a pride in his appearance, and his raven black hair was his weakness, always glossy and impeccably styled.

‘They’d have to get close enough to start with, and a good wrist lock would solve the problem even then’ He twisted her wrist to demonstrate, just until he saw her grimace, and let go. She knew her stuff, and it was refreshing to connect with someone so tuned in to his own profession. Truth be told, it was more of a lifestyle than a job. He hoped they could trade work experiences without compromising any confidential information.

But at that moment there was something more primal at hand, something basic and physical that stirred and aroused him. He was always holding himself back, keeping something in reserve, and he guessed that he could let go with her, be himself in a way he couldn’t with anyone else he’d encountered so far. She pushed him back and they stumbled to the couch. A split second decision allowed her to push him down and follow so that she was straddling him, triggering his arousal as her thighs clamped to his. Again she reached for his hair and he countered, pinning her wrists behind her back. Still she surged forward, her breasts pressing to his chest, her lips crashing to his. She lost her balance, allowing him to pivot so that she was the one sitting on the couch. He braced his knee between her thighs, letting go of her wrists. She put her palms to his chest, keeping him from leaning in to claim her lips.

‘One of us has to yield’ he panted.

‘The stronger the fight, the sweeter the surrender’ she growled, and bucked forward pushing him onto the floor. He landed on his back, the thick woollen rug cushioning his fall as she followed him down. He fought back, and they rolled around on the floor, neither giving in until they paused, both panting with exertion, Bastien on top but bracing his weight off her, elbows locked.

He straddled her, pinning her hips down and straightened up to take his sweater and shirt off, warmed through at last from their battle for supremacy. Her eyes blackened as she gazed at his broad muscled chest and flat abdomen scattered with dark hair. Again she bucked and threw him off, mirroring his effort by pinning him to the floor and stripping to the waist before falling on him and delivering scorching kisses and little nips along his neck to his shoulder. Her breasts were small and firm despite her stature, her belly soft but flat, and he was hard between her thighs. They rolled around the floor managing somehow to assist each other to strip naked and end up side by side, her thigh thrown over his hip, breathing hard. She reached down to judge his size with fingers and palm, and a slow smile spread across her face.

‘You are big in every way, Bastien Lykel.’ she murmured appreciatively. ‘I knew there was something about you worth pursuing’ Despite the woollen rugs and the heat of the wood burner the floor was hard and cold and he was grateful as she rose and pulled him to his feet, guiding him with purposeful stride to her bedroom. It was cool but she threw back the bedclothes to drag him on top of her, sinking into the firm mattress and spreading her thighs for him. She rose to sink her teeth into his shoulder and clawed at his back. With an inhuman effort he drew back from her, not quite lost yet.

‘I have – we need protection’ he panted.

‘In the bedside drawer’ she groaned ‘Hurry, I’ve not bedded a man for months’ He fumbled in the drawer and found a foil packet, tearing it open and hoping it was large enough for his girth. He was in luck, and rolled the rubber sheath over his length without discomfort. She pushed him over onto his back and mounted him like an animal, pressing her sex to him before guiding him where she needed him and he placed his hands on her hips, trusting that she knew what she was letting herself in for. She groaned as she started to lower herself onto him, alarmingly tight, but she was wet and the noises she made assured him that pain and pleasure were inseparable for her.

Soon she sat flush to him and rolled her hips, rising up above him and throwing her head back with a guttural cry before leaning forward to bury her face in his between his neck and shoulder, sucking and biting. What they did in that bed bordered on fighting as they wrestled for dominance, rolling over, tangling in the bedclothes, settling into a fierce steady rhythm that challenged the strength of the bedframe. Bastien realised that she could take anything he gave her, and savagely thrust into her willing flesh, pinning her hands above her head until she arched her back and gave out a loud ululating cry. He felt her pulse around him, and with a roar he followed her over the edge until they lay spent and panting, and he rolled off her to the side.

‘Are you sure you’re not from Lythikos?’ she panted as he cleaned himself up.

‘I may have some ancestors somewhere along the line’ he remarked. He went to the bedroom door.

‘You can stay the night if you like’ she said from the tangle of bedclothes. He paused in thought. He could remember his way back to his billet but was reluctant to dress and go out into the cold.

‘That’s generous of you. I need to get my clothes and fold them’ When he returned, she had straightened the blankets and thrown them back for him, a naked leg uncovered. He got in and lay on his back. He wasn’t a cuddler and the bed was wide. She seemed to understand, and curled into herself on her side of the bed.

‘When are you on duty?’ she asked

‘Not until we leave’ he replied ‘My superior seems to think I need down time, but I’d rather be busy’

‘I heard about Walker’ she replied, and he gritted his teeth.

‘I was there’ he said shortly, feeling himself tense at the memory.

‘He sounded like a good man. I never met him’

‘And you never will’ he turned his back to her.

‘I’m sorry for your loss’ she said quietly. ‘That was insensitive of me.’ He snorted, biting back resentful words. He felt her hand on his shoulder. ‘I’m off duty tomorrow as well. If you like, you could come hunting with me’ Her hand fell away. ‘If you look outside the back you’ll see the green and the communal cookfire. All the cabins that back onto it contribute – either with meat or vegetables, or by cooking. I need to make my donation’

‘I’ll think about it’ He was tired – tired of the flashbacks, tired of grieving, tired of worrying about the Walker family, and now from the physical exertion he had just undergone. He felt the comfortable glow of his release, and that and the brandy lured him closer to the edge of sleep. He felt his eyelids grow heavy. His companion was silent, and he surrendered to the dark comfort of slumber.

Negli anni Sessanta, quando lo spettatore vedeva comparire a tutto schermo le onomatopee “Thwack!”, “Pow!”, “Crash!” sul proprio televisore, sapeva con certezza di stare guardando la serie tv di Batman. Lo show con protagonista Adam West, famoso per il suo stile camp e sopra le righe – una conseguenza dello spirito bizzarro delle storie a fumetti dell’epoca – è rimasto nella memoria collettiva come uno degli esempi più estremi di adattamento fumettistico.

Un Batman fuori di testa

Nel 1965, l’emittente televisiva ABC – che si spartiva il titolo di canale più visto insieme alle rivali CBS e NBC – stava perdendo posizioni rispetto alle concorrenti ed era alla ricerca di un programma di largo successo. Ricerche di mercato condotte da ABC avevano eletto tra i personaggi preferiti del pubblico Superman, Dick Tracy, Annie e Batman. Quando i diritti di Superman e Dick Tracy si rivelarono fuori dalla portata del canale, un dirigente, appassionato lettore di Batman fin da ragazzino, propose di adattare Batman, e così ABC approcciò la divisione televisiva dello studio 20th Century Fox e il produttore William Dozier. Dozier non aveva familiarità con il mondo del supereroe. Decise di documentarsi e lesse i fumetti, trovandoli «fuori di testa e molto infantili».

Dozier non aveva approfondito granché le sue letture, altrimenti avrebbe scoperto che in origine Batman era un vigilante pulp dai modi duri. Ma negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, le storie di Batman (e Superman) avevano preso una deriva particolarmente fantasiosa: Bruce Wayne combatteva spesso in scenari onirici – tra oggetti di scena giganti e mondi alieni – o contro cattivi assurdi (Bat-Mito, Calendar Man). Con l’aiuto dello sceneggiatore Lorenzo Semple Jr., futuro scrittore di film come Papillon, I tre giorni del Condor e Flash Gordon, pensò allora di assecondare quello stile, anzi, di esagerarlo. Gli adulti lo avrebbero trovato comico, i bambini immaginifico.

La produzione scelse gli attori in base alla loro capacità di affrontare con serietà anche il testo più scemo. Adam West era un attore televisivo sempre molto sobrio e determinato, ideale per quell’umorismo deadpan, dove la comicità sta nel contrasto che si crea quando una battuta è recitata con serietà estrema, a cui puntavano i produttori. In particolare, West li convinse con una pubblicità della Nesquik dove recitava nei panni di un simil James Bond. L’altra metà del Dinamico Duo, la spalla giovane ed esuberante Robin, prese vita grazie all’esordiente Burton Gervis, universitario ventunenne che praticava judo. Gervis cambiò il suo nome in Burt Ward per renderne più facile la pronuncia.

ll trucco era che gli attori avessero una recitazione quanto mai credibile. La situazione, le storie, i gadget, era tutto sopra le righe, non poteva esserlo anche la recitazione. Proprio la performance impassibile di West, integerrimo anche quando doveva ballare il “Batusi” e amorevolmente coscienzioso (anche nelle situazioni d’emergenza, pagava il parcheggio della Batmobile), rappresentò uno dei punti di forza dello show. «Non c’erano ombre o riferimenti al perché Batman facesse quel che faceva, nessun flashback su suoi genitori uccisi da un colpo di pistola in un vicolo sudicio» scrive Grant Morrison nel libro Supergods. «Il Batman di Adam West era Batman perché per lui aveva senso esserlo.»

Dozier chiese ad attori e attrici di sua conoscenza di interpretare le parti di contorno. Così, i ruoli dei cattivi andarono ad attori e comici di fama come Cesar Romero (che rifiutò di radersi i baffi, suo marchio di fabbrica, per vestire i panni del Joker, e i truccatori dovettero abbondare con il cerone), Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin, Vincent Price, Roddy McDowall, Milton Berlen, Joan Collins e Liberace.

Un’icona popolare

La serie colpiva per l’impianto visivo da pop art, con costumi e scenografia eccentriche e coloratissime – in un panorama televisivo ancora poco avvezzo al colore – e le onomatopee di colpi e pugni a tutto schermo durante i combattimenti. I cattivi erano presi dal fumetto, e quando non lo erano, gli sceneggiatori si lasciavano andare a creazioni bizzarre come Egghead o King Tut. Un elemento fu invece ripensato da zero: la Batmobile, che nel programma è una versione modificata della Lincoln Futura, una concept car (cioè un prototipo mai entrato in produzione) del 1955.

Quando, nell’autunno del 1965, andò in onda l’episodio pilota, le recensioni furono pessime, ma ormai ABC aveva già acquistato la serie e la mandò in onda ogni mercoledì e giovedì, spezzando una puntata in due episodi di mezz’ora con un cliffhanger nel mezzo. Inaspettatamente, forse complice il clima politico e culturale tutt’altro che rassicurante, Batman diventò l’esperienza escapista preferita dei telespettatori statunitensi. L’Uomo Pipistrello si tramutò in un’icona della cultura pop, finendo sulle copertine dei giornali e furoreggiando come beniamino del pubblico. Era la terza grande B degli anni Sessanta, dopo James Bond e i Beatles.

Fu messo in cantiere di tutta fretta perfino un film per il cinema, in cui Batman e Robin combattevano contro Joker, Pinguino, Catwoman e l’Enigmista. Della pellicola rimane famosa la scena in cui Batman non riesce a sbarazzarsi di una bomba che sta per esplodere, nonché il repellente per squali, l’arma più improbabile che l’eroe avrebbe mai potuto avere nel suo arsenale.

L’eco del successo arrivò presto anche nel nostro paese. Sul Corriere della Seradel 31 marzo 1966 Giuseppe Josca già registrò la portata fenomenale della serie, che gli spettatori italiani avrebbero visto a partire dall’autunno di quell’anno. «Batman è diventato di colpo uno dei personaggi più popolari d’America» scriveva Josca. «Quanto durerà? Qualcuno dice che siamo appena al principio.»

Il declino e la riscoperta della serie tv di Batman

Se da una parte la struttura molto rigida e prevedibile degli episodi rese iconico il programma – c’erano situazioni e scene ricorrenti, come quella in cui Batman e Robin si arrampicavano su un edificio e interagivano con una guest star che sbucava da una della finestre del palazzo – dall’altra consumò in fretta l’entusiasmo del pubblico e la ripetitività degli intrecci uccise la loro comicità intrinseca. Inoltre, in una sorta di rilancio obbligatorio, le trame si facevano sempre più visivamente folli, con grandi scenografie e marchingegni nuovi, e richiedevano budget alti.

Nel tentativo di tagliare i costi, la produzione prese una serie di scorciatoie: in una puntata, Batman affronta un gruppo di antagonisti invisibili e, per equilibrare la lotta, combatte al buio. La scena è uno schermo nero con solo i rumori dei pugni e le onomatopee in sovraimpressione.

Nella terza stagione, per tentare di risollevare gli ascolti, introdussero un terzo personaggio protagonista, Batgirl, interpretato da Yvonne Craig, ma nulla di tutto ciò riuscì a recuperare il pubblico perso. Batman chiuse alla fine della terza stagione.

West e Ward interpretarono i personaggi in alcuni film e cartoni per la televisione, tra cui un lungometraggio metanarrativo, Supereroi per caso: Le disavventure di Batman e Robin, in cui si ripercorre la storia produttiva del telefilm. Adam West morì nel 2017, a 88 anni. Due anni dopo, Ward indossò di nuovo i panni di Robin nel crossover televisivo Crisi sulle Terre infinite.

Nel frattempo però Batman era diventato un prodotto diverso. Gli spettatori che recuperarono la serie dopo la chiusura non ridevano più con il programma ma del programma, perché il mutamento dei tempi lo aveva fatto diventare ridicolo, pacchiano e dozzinale. Solo negli ultimi anni il pubblico è tornato ad apprezzare l’umorismo volontariamente camp della produzione. La serie diventò il mezzo di paragone per qualsiasi adattamento di materiale fumettistico, in positivo («volevamo proprio quel gusto») o in negativo («non lo faremo così esagerato»), ma nessuno ha mai più osato così tanto con il personaggio.

Nel libro TV (The Book), i critici Alan Sepinwall e Matt Zoller Seitz inserirono la serie nella lista delle migliori mai realizzate. Pur colpevole di «aver fornito ai giornalisti una serie di stereotipi su cui appoggiarsi ogni volta che trattavano la forma espressiva del fumetto», Batman era «una casa degli specchi che rivoltava le ansie del mondo reale e dava loro una voce buffa».

Nonostante la richiesta dei fan, Batman uscì sul mercato home video per la prima volta soltanto nel 2014, a causa di una serie di grovigli legali che aveva bloccato ogni iniziativa fino ad allora, tra cui la mancata intesa tra DC Comics, che deteneva i diritti dei personaggi, e 20th Century Fox Television, la casa di produzione della serie tv. E persino il fatto che molte delle comparsate degli attori che interpretano i cattivi non erano state contrattualizzati e, per poter distribuire i DVD, la produzione avrebbe dovuto contattare ogni attore per regolarizzare le loro apparizioni o tagliare le scene del tutto.

Nel 2013, DC Comics varò una serie a fumetti ambientata nel mondo della serie tv, Batman ’66, scritta da Jeff Parker e disegnata da vari autori, tra cui Mike Allred. La testata presentò anche un adattamento di una sceneggiatura scritta da Harlan Ellison per il programma ma mai prodotta, in cui esordiva il personaggio di Due Facce. La serie ebbe un buon seguito, tanto da generare alcuni spin-off.

C’è poi un piccolo aspetto tragico che intreccia la storia della serie tv di Batman con quella del fumetto. Per moltissimo tempo, l’unico autore associato alla creazione di Batman fuBob Kane, fumettista che ricorreva però all’uso di sceneggiatori e disegnatori non accreditati (i cosiddetti ghost writer e ghost artist). Uno di questi, Bill Finger, fu fondamentale nella creazione del personaggio e poi nella scritture di molte delle prime storie di Batman. Tuttavia, da vivo Finger non ricevette mai riconoscimenti pubblici per il suo contributo e morì, indigente, negli anni Settanta.

Finger fu riabilitato ufficialmente come co-creatore solo nel 2015. La storia della sua rocambolesca restaurazione è raccontata nel documentario del 2017 Batman & Bill, in cui si cita un episodio riguardante la serie tv. Bisognoso di lavoro, Finger riuscì a farsi ingaggiare per scrivere due puntate della serie insieme all’amico sceneggiatore Charles Sinclair. Sinclair ricorda che Finger gli chiese di poter comparire per primo nei titoli di testa degli episodi, perché per lui significava molto. Quei due episodi, in cui il supereroe si scontra con il Re degli Orologi, sono l’unica produzione di Batman accreditata a Finger.

“How many, dear?” The kindly old women at the market stall called out to you, her lopsided smile reaching you from behind the box of fruit she was currently lugging around.

You glanced up at her, taking your longing stare away from the impossibly succulent oranges you had been studiously inspecting just a moment before. You offered her a warm smile back, pulling your scarf firmly around your head as you cleared your throat.

“Just the one, if it’s no trouble, Ayat.” You replied in a sing song voice, unable to keep the smile from your expression.

The wise, old Moroccan matriarch had been gifting you fruit from her market stall in exchange for English lessons since you’d arrived in the country a month and a half ago. Apparently, she had a grandson living in England, and was determined to surprise him with her newly learned third language when he returned home for Eid al-Adha.

She gave you a knowing smile in turn, and handed you the fruit, clasping your hand in hers, her eyes full of fondness.

“Shukran, Ayat.” You whispered to her, giving her weathered palm a gentle squeeze.

“Barak llāhū fīk, Y/N.” She whispered back, reaching forward to pat your cheek affectionately, before the two of you parted ways for the day.

You limped through the bustling souk, the sounds of fervent chatter and the aroma of rich spices and freshly cooked meat overtaking your senses. You could not help but grin, your heart practically soaring, as you considered the stark contrast between Marrakech and the battlefield you’d found yourself almost dying on months earlier.

It had been around twelve weeks since Steve and Tony had faced off, and you’d found yourself at the business end of a collision with an eighteen-wheeler, snapping your femur amongst myriad injuries in the process. True to his word, Tony had fixed you up as much as you had allowed him to, and you had been back on your feet in mere days. However, once you were able to move around unassisted, you had fled the compound without a word, leaving only a note for Peter in your wake.

Peter.

You gave a heartfelt sigh, digging into your orange as you dipped and weaved through the crowded side streets, making your way toward the ocean-side cliffs at the edge of town.

It had hurt you tremendously to leave Peter without saying goodbye, and you had almost considered staying when the image of his boyish grin, and those gleaming, oak brown eyes had materialised in your mind.

But you knew you couldn’t stay. Not after… Well. Everything.

You stifled a gasp as you came upon the desolate cliff tops, overlooking the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic. It didn’t seem to matter how many times you came here for sunset; the view never lost its magnificence in your mind.

You stood, allowing the gentle evening breeze to tousle your hair as you pulled your headscarf down, acutely aware that as usual, no one would be around to pay mind at this hour.

You had just closed your eyes, allowing the sound of crashing waves and the scent of salt and citrus to flood your senses, when a small voice from behind you caused you to turn so sharply on your heel, you almost fell.

“Y/N…”

Scanning the area behind you, your gaze fell upon the face of one who should not… Who could not be there. You let out a breath of surprise, the figure’s name falling from your lips like a rock in a tranquil pond.

“Peter…”

For a moment, the two of you simply stood, neither one of you making a move to speak, or approach the other. You weren’t entirely sure you weren’t hallucinating, not until Peter finally broke free of his trance, taking a careful step towards you, hands up in mock surrender.

“Y/N… It’s really you…” He murmured, eyes shimmering with emotion.

You heart stuttered in your chest, and you felt your head spin as you tried to comprehend the situation you had found yourself in. You had been so careful to keep any and all trace of your whereabouts a secret, but in reality, you had known the second you left that the Avengers would track you down eventually.

What you hadn’t anticipated, was that Peter might ignore your letter, which very specifically instructed him not to come looking for you.

That realisation turned your confused joy into mild rage, and you narrowed your eyes at the boy in front of you, grimacing,

“What the hell are you doing here?” Your snapped.

Peter swallowed hard, his gaze dropping to the floor as his shoulders slumped in turn.

“I… I had to know if you were alright…” He mumbled, a faint pink hue on his cheeks.

“I assume you got my letter. Which very specifically told you to stay away.” You snarled, crossing your arms over your chest defensively.

Peter shot you an affronted glare, taking another step toward you, and you flinched. This was exactly what you’d hoped to avoid.

“I just want to understand… Y/N… I want to know, why did you leave?” Peter questioned, his eyes flickering with resolve. You knew that look; it was a silent promise that you would not have peace until Peter Parker had the answers he desired.

With a sigh of defeat, you ran a trembling hand through your hair, unable to meet Peter’s gaze all of a sudden.

“I… I couldn’t stay.” Your voice was a mere whisper, as you found yourself confessing the thoughts that had haunted you for three long months out loud for the first time. “After… After the battle. I realised… I’m not cut out to be an Avenger.”

You felt the familiar sting of tears nipping at the backs of your eyes and found yourself blinking furiously to keep them at bay. When you chanced a look at Peter, he was staring at you disbelievingly, his eyes narrowed, mouth gaping ever so slightly.

“Y/N… What the hell are you talking about?” He demanded, taking yet another step towards you.

“I let myself get hurt, almost killed, during that battle. Because I was too busy worrying about everyone around me, and not focusing on my own safety.” You let out a shaky breath, hugging your arms around yourself tighter as you spoke. “I realised afterwards… I’d been relying on others to have my back… Keep me safe… And it made me weak.”

You stifled a sob, fighting off the memory of you waking up to find yourself battered… bruised… bloodied… Practically on deaths door. It made you shudder to even consider.

“So… I promised myself I’d never be weak again. I’d never let my own safety, my own life, be an after thought again. And the best way to do that is if I just… Work alone…” You trailed off, your voice cracking with emotion as the thoughts and feelings you’d buried so deep from that day came rushing back to you.

You heard Peter sigh and glanced up at him just in time to see him almost entirely close the distance between the two of you. Fighting the urge to run into his arms after so long without seeing him, you took a tentative step back, biting your bottom lip hard enough to draw blood as you shook your head.

“Y/N, let’s get one thing straight here. You are not weak. In fact, you’re the strongest person I know. Avengers included.” Peter offered you a smirk, and you struggled to stifle a giggle.

Damn him. Even at a time like this, he could turn your mood around with one sentence.

“You took the heaviest hit I’ve ever seen, and you survived it.” He continued. “But putting your life on the line to help your friends… Well… That’s what being a hero is all about.”

You let out a trembling breath, composing yourself once more.

“Well, I don’t think I’m made for the hero life, Pete.” You whispered, staring at the ground woefully.

“So… even if being an Avenger isn’t what you want anymore… How about you come back to New York with me anyway? Come home? Everyone misses you a bunch and Mr Stark has been playing Cold Play on repeat ever since you left and Mr Rhodey-“

“I can get by on my own, Pete.” You sighed, cutting off his rambling as your sorrowful eyes met his own.

“I know you can. I know. But… Thing is…” Peter scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, flashing you a boyish grin. “You don’t have to, Y/N.”

You stared at him for a moment, the confusion in your eyes betraying your less-than-impressed expression. Peter took a tentative step forward, hand outstretched to take your own, and despite yourself, you found your own hand reaching out in turn.

“You don’t have to be alone ever again, Y/N, because… Well… You have me.” Peter murmured, clasping your palms together and gently running the pad of his thumb across your knuckles, a small gesture that send a shockwave of warmth and familiarity through you.

You let out an involuntary gasp, your wide eyes finding Peter’s, which were filled entirely with the reflection of the setting sun, twinkling back at you like pools of amber. You found yourself lost in their warmth momentarily, your feet gravitating closer to Peter as if under a spell.

As you approached, Peter’s other hand reached out gingerly to clasp your waist, holding you steadily against his surprisingly muscular form. You dully wondered if he had always felt this sturdy to you. If you’d always felt the tension leave your body under his sincere gaze. If being close to him had always felt like… Like home.

Peter allowed his forehead to drop against yours, letting out a gentle sigh as the hand that had gripped your own skimmed up the side of your arm, coming to rest against your cheek. Slender fingers brushed the stray hairs there, gently tucking them behind your ear as his soulful eyes searched your own.

“I promise you, Y/N.” Peter whispered to you, a soft smile on his lips. “No matter what happens, whether you come back to the Avengers or not. I promise you; I’ll always be around to keep you safe.”

You were unaware of the dewy droplets spilling over your lashes, until the abrasive pad of Peter’s thumb glanced over your cheek, brushing them away. You let out a small breath, unable to keep your face from cracking into a joyous smile that was radiant enough to make the suns evening rays jealous, in Peter’s mind.

Words escaped you as your body was entirely overcome with emotion, and you found yourself pressing forward as your eyelids fluttered shut, your lips delicately pressing against Peter’s.

The young Avenger tensed for a moment, caught somewhat by surprise, before he clutched your cheek firmly in his hand, crushing your body against his with the arm that snaked around your waist.

It was a stark contrast to the gentleness with which he kissed you back. Your breaths mingling as soft lips glanced off each other, almost chaste in their tentativeness.

The two of you stayed in each other’s arms for some time, silently watching the sun disappear below the horizon. You knew you had a big decision to make come morning light, but for now at least, you were perfectly content to revel in the comfort of Peter’s embrace, the place you knew you would always be safe.

Nadie había contemplado la posibilidad, pero la vieja casa de Richard y Mary Parker, padres de Maguna y Peter, se había convertido en el refugio del arácnido desde que se marchó de la torre Stark con intención de no volver.

Apenas había pasado unos pocos años de su vida allí, en aquellas paredes, siendo un niño normal con una familia normal. Todo empezó ahí dentro, donde se puso en marcha un motor que lo empujaría a su perdición: a Spider-Man. Todavía conservaba algunos recuerdos, algunos momentos de felicidad a los que aferrarse, donde las únicas preocupaciones eran cepillarse los dientes antes de dormir y procurar que Morgan estuviese bien arropada por la noche para que no pasara frío.

¿Por qué sus padres se marcharon de la noche a la mañana? ¿Por qué los abandonaron de aquel modo? Necesitaba respuestas, necesitaba poner un por qué a aquellas incógnitas. ¿Por qué él, y no otro, estaba destinado a no ser una persona normal? Solo dentro de ese hogar abandonado podía encontrar respuestas mientras se resguardaba de la lluvia y el frío propios de la estación.��

La vieja habitación de sus padres, el despacho, cualquier recoveco, incluso detrás de los muebles del salón, ni una sola pista. Hasta que un pequeño flashback asaltó su cabeza: su padre guardando a toda prisa un maletín entre los viejos tratos del sótano, entre la basura, donde nadie nunca buscaría.

A toda prisa, Peter bajó los peldaños de dos en dos hasta llegar a la planta baja, atestada de papeles, chismes y suciedad. Sin demorar mucho más, comenzó a registrar entre las cajas, en los estantes, a leer cualquier papel que pudiera darle la menor pista a seguir. Al igual que los días anteriores, todo en vano: el maletín estaba completamente vacío.

—¿Es qué tenía que enrevesarlo todo? ¿No tenías suficiente con marcharte y dejar solos a tus hijos? ¡¿También tenías que hacerlo sin dejarme respuestas?!

Enfadado y frustrado, empujó la pared de ladrillos con todas sus fuerzas, la cual tembló. Asustado, retrocedió unos pasos creyendo que la pared no podía sostener sus habilidades superiores y que terminaría por echar el muro abajo. Lejos de aquello, una pared corredera se deslizó y dejó expuesta una pantalla.

Inserte el código de seguridad: _ _ _

Peter se sintió empalidecer, pero corrió hacia el monitor para comenzar a teclear números sin ton ni son. Todos erróneos. Debía haber una pista, el menor de los indicios que le dijera cuál era la clave de seguridad que resolvería todas sus dudas.

Y tan solo tuvo que mirar hacia el maletín para hallar la respuesta en el grabado del cuero: OOO

Con el corazón latiéndole a mil por hora, tecleó los tres dígitos y, pronto, la imagen de su padre quedó frente a la pantalla; parecía nervioso y cansado, incluso paranoico, pero tras comprobar en varias ocasiones que estaba solo en la habitación, comenzó a hablar frente al monitor:

Hola Peter, hijo. Me habría gustado darte este mensaje en vida, haberlo explicado como se merecía, pero me temo que eres demasiado joven como para comprenderlo y que no me queda demasiado tiempo. Eso es lo que realmente me duele, saber que aquí llega el final. Han sido unos años maravillosos, y no sabes lo orgulloso que estoy de ti y de poder llamarme tu padre. Créeme, el sentimiento de tu madre es el mismo. Los dos os queremos con locura, a ti y a Morgan. Sé que cuidarás de ella. Siempre lo has demostrado, eres mejor de lo que tu madre y yo seremos nunca. Incluso que los tíos Ben y May. Os dejamos en buenas manos.

Sin embargo, hay algo que nunca os hemos dicho, ni siquiera a ellos, y que tarde o temprano tenéis que saber. Tú el primero, eres el mayor después de todo, colega.

Mi investigación científica con las arañas, sé que el Doctor Connors cree que lo he abandonado sin razón alguna, pero no es cierto. El gobierno quiere apropiarse del experimento y crear un ejército demasiado poderoso como para ser frenado, no nos ha quedado más remedio que destruir todas las pruebas posibles y huir. Si nos atrapan, será el final de todo, comenzará la guerra. Y mi deber moral es impedirlo. Ojalá pudiéramos llevaros con nosotros, pero ni siquiera sé si llegaremos muy lejos y no es un riesgo que estemos dispuestos a asumir con tu hermana y contigo. Es doloroso, pero es la mejor opción.

Unos ruidos se escucharon tras Richard, el propio Peter, siendo niño, llamaba a su padre.

No me queda mucho tiempo y aún tengo algo importante que decir. Espero que algún día nos perdones por esto, pero quiero que entiendas que tu madre y yo estábamos desesperados, y que de haber tenido otra opción jamás habríamos recurrido a ello. Pero no hubo más remedio.

Durante mucho tiempo, tratamos de ser padres por la vía tradicional pero me temo que mis genes no son lo suficientemente fuertes, así que jugamos una maniobra desesperada: hacernos con la genética de otra personas. Espero que comprendas que eran otros tiempos y que nuestro amor hacia vosotros nos llevó a cometer un acto imprudente pero... Peter, aunque jamás me quitaré de encima el título y el honor de ser el padre de mis pequeños Parker, por vuestras venas corre otra sangre. La de Tony Stark.

Si algún día ves esto y decides ponerte en contacto con él, Dios sabe que estaré agradecido por ello. Es un buen hombre, sé que él cuidará bien de vosotros si algún día os faltan la tía May y el tío Ben. Aunque espero que nunca tengáis que comprobarlo.

Peter, te quiero más que a nada en este mundo, y a tu hermana también. Cuídala. Conviértete en el hombre que estás destinado a ser. Mi legado eres tú. Si alguien debe continuar con lo que yo dejé en vida, ese debes de ser tú.

El video se cortó de pronto, Peter ni siquiera se inmutó o reaccionó aparentemente, demasiado en shock por todo lo que había oído. Sus padres no se habían ido por voluntad propia, los querían, solo habían intentado ponerlos a salvo. Habían obrado en busca de un bien mayor. Por fin tenía respuestas para el Doctor Connors.

Sin embargo, algo resonaba con mucha más fuerza dentro de su cabeza, por encima de todo el cúmulo de pensamientos: Por vuestras venas corre otra sangre. La de Tony Stark.

Sin embargo, no tardó en recordar la primera vez que se conocieron, la conexión, la complicidad. Como el señor Stark y él se habían entendido desde primer momento con una sola mirada. Sus instinto paternal hacia él y Maguna. El deseo oculto de ser una familia. La necesidad de estar juntos. Todas las veces que Peter en su fuero interno había pensado en él como “papá” antes de la adopción, el incontable número de ocasiones en que Maguna lo había llamado así en voz alta, con toda naturalidad. El parecido físico.

Había tenido la respuesta ante sus narices y no había sido capaz de verlo por sí mismo, cegado por el deseo y la frustración de querer ser un Stark sin abandonar sus raíces como Parker.

Lo había tenido todo el tiempo y, lejos de conservarlo, había salido corriendo.

Pero se había acabado.

Who is your favorite character in 2? Kanan Jarrus. He has a fantastic character arc, he’s a wonderful mentor and space dad, and he’s probably my fave Jedi (and character) in all of Star Wars. Sorry about it, Obi Wan

Who is your least favorite character in 1? I mean, I don’t tend to focus on least favorite characters too often. However, I do generally have a vague desire to punch Theo in the face anytime he’s onscreen.... He’s slightly better in 6B with the (incredibly rushed) redemption arc and all that, but like. Also.

What is your favorite episode of 4? Oh man, that’s a really difficult question for this show, actually. But for sheer creativity and memorability, I’d probably say “The Rashomon Job.” That was one of the ones that really stuck in my from when I first watched the show, and it ended up being just as good as I remembered.

What is your favorite season of 5? Hmmm I wanna say either S3 or S5. The harvest festival arc in 3 is great, but all the Leslie/Ben stuff in S5? Beautiful and iconic.

Who is your favorite couple in 3? I was a Jack/Sam shipper way back in the day, and that honestly hasn’t changed.

Who is your favorite couple in 2? Kanan/Hera! They’re just... !!! They care about each other! They’re supportive! They just love each other so much and I have so many feelings

What is your favorite episode of 1? “Frayed” Like !!! The entirety of 3A up to this point has been building up to the idea of Scott being/becoming an Alpha, and, like, throughout the season we see him do little Alpha things -- being a leader, pretty much everything about his relationship w/ Isaac, etc. And then!! Then!! This is the episode where he actually starts to realize it! And where he actively chooses the leadership role!

And I’m sorry, I’m not done talking about this episode yet, because I honestly just have so many feelings?? And it’s got this one moment. One moment in particular. Which may be one of my favorite moments in the entire series. Like the whole set up is really good (it’s also one of the few TW eps where anachronic order actually worked), and there’s this whole moment in the middle where Scott and Isaac have to calm Boyd down and keep him from attacking Ethan, as Boyd thinks the Alpha Pack killed Derek. And then, at the end of the episode, Isaac (who did not get upset about Derek in the same way Boyd did) learns that Scott isn’t healing from the wound he got fighting the Alphas, and he just. Absolutely freaks out and attacks Ethan.

(The show directly parallels Boyd’s reaction about Derek to Isaac’s reaction about Scott, and !!!)

BUT THEN. Then Scott comes out. And he roars.

And it’s not technically a roar, but he yells Isaac’s name and it has power behind it. And everyone (including Boyd) notices.

But Isaac!! Isaac stops! He responds as if it was a roar! And I’m!! Gonna go!! Absolutely!! Feral!!!

Ahem.

What is your favorite episode of 5? Oh man, I don’t actually remember a lot of specific favorite episodes, even though I know there’s a lot of eps that I really like... I’m thinking “Flu Season”? But also that’s just one among many very good episodes.

What is your favorite season of 2? I’m gonna say S4, actually. I thought the show had a really strong ending, and I love the final arcs of all the characters.

How long have you watched 1? So I started watching in... 2012 or 2013 I think? And then watched off and on through at least part of S4. Then I started a rewatch here in the year of our Lord 2020 and uh. Here we are :P

How did you become interested in 3? This was actually one of the first fandoms that tiny!Carolyn was ever involved in! My mom discovered it back in like... 2003 or something, decided it was not inappropriate for her barely nine-year-old daughter, and from then on we were both pretty much hooked.

Who is your favorite actor in 4? Mmm frick, do I have to pick? Probably either Christian Kane or Aldis Hodge. But also Beth Riesgraf is fantastic, too, the whole show is just so delightful.

Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? Okay okay okay. So. Rebels is definitely the tighter written and better show, imo, but also I’m having a ton of Teen Wolf feelings right now and I just care so much about this characters. So like, currently and tentatively, Teen Wolf? (Sorry P&R, I love you, but straight sitcoms are probably never going to be my pick, even though it is really good)

Which show have you seen more episodes of - 1 or 3? So like, this is really just a contest of how many episodes each show has, right? Since I can’t imagine picking a show for a game like this if I hadn’t seen all the eps? Anywho, seeing as Teen Wolf has 100 episodes and SG-1 has 213 episodes, I think SG-1 is the clear winner here.

If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? So like, I wanna say Amy Palavi, the waitress in their Brewpub in S5? She doesn’t have a terribly intense life or tragic backstory, but she also gets to befriend and hang out with Parker -- along with some mild involvement in shenanigans -- so that seems ideal, honestly.

(And yes, I know she gets kidnapped in that one ep, but that works out all right in the end, so I’m still down.)

Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? Weirdly, absolutely yes. I’ve actually read a few that were pretty good.

In fact, according to Word of God, Leverage and Stargate actually take place in the same universe? Apparently there were going to be a flashback gag with Eliot going through the gate as part of one of his many past jobs, but they weren’t able to do it, due to the sets already have been dismantled.

Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? Huh, oh man. I’m not usually much of rarepair person tbh. And like this is literally something I’m pulling out of absolutely nowhere and haven’t actually thought about before now. But maybe Sydney/Hayden? or Sydney/Lori?

Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? Y’know, I was gonna go with Stargate with this one, but actually the big storyarcs were never my favorite part of SG-1. Whereas P&R actually had some really good and emotionally compelling arcs. So I’m actually gonna go with Parks & Rec with this one.

Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? Neither of them really have much theme music to speak of, but if we’re just talking about music, then Rebels is the clear winner here. Like seriously, props to Kevin Kiner et al., it has some seriously fantastic musical cues. Heck, the score for the finale got nominated for an emmy.
