So I've been playing Mass Effect Andromeda

(SPOILERS AHEAD!)

and near the end of Jaal's loyalty mission, where Akksul comes and faces them. Backed by a couple dozen of his fanatics. And you are given two choices. Choices that you have to make quickly. Either kill Akksul, or let him shoot Jaal. If you kill him, then he becomes a martyr, and his fanatics become even more intense in their fight against the initiative. If you don't kill him, and you let him shoot Jaal, then Akksul shoots him. But misses. The bullet grazes his cheek and hits a boulder behind Jaal.

I chose the latter in this play through. And when I saw him miss, I had to physically restrain myself from shouting across the quiet house, "YOU MISSED! HOW COULD YOU MISS?! HE WAS STANDING THREE FEET IN FRONT OF YOU!"

No he wouldn't. He deeply understands what Jaal is doing here and that to Jaal it might be worth dying for. Jaal also said to let him handle it, and Noah is going to respect that, however hard it is to do in the moment.

Later he'll do something similar with the exiles and it will turn out badly for him.

Noah would simply stand between Jaal and Akksul once Akksul raised his gun.

I JUST FUCKING FINISHED ANDROMEDA

Over a week of playing nearly every single day, 56 hours and 42 fucking minutes-

I have loved every single second of this game

Upgrading armour and crafting, doing silly side quests, loyalty missions, collecting data from all around, upgrading the Nomad (which I despised at first, and then... I loved so much)

This game was an absolute joy from start to finish and I don't understand how, even with the ME trilogy having come first, people don't like ME Andromeda

This game was stellar and beautiful and I felt like I could really sit there and appreciate the silliness, the seriousness, the awkwardness, all of it

Every little decision mattered

Every little decision defined my character and looking back at the files and all? I got to play a perfect rendition of myself in my Pathfinder and I have my own story I've made along the way, just helping wherever I could

I got Wrex back in my good side after I chose to save Raeka and we're closer than ever, I've done every loyalty mission, I won a damn bar fight, I got blackout drunk, I lost poker, I got a Turian girlfriend, I spared Akksul, I got Evfra and Reyes and Kandros and Tann and everyone else on my side so we could protect all our worlds and make a home

And I'm so emotional over this game because it was perfect

The nods to the trilogy- the nomad paint that says "hold the line" in its description and the other salarian's words in battle as a nod to kirrahe? Mordin's photo being in the Salarian info stuff at one point while he smiles? The archangel paint? The collection of model ships?

It's all incredible

People don't seem to like this game but it opened up a whole new side of our universe and it doesn't take away from it at all

It's just the other side of it all that we have so far

It connected everything and I couldn't have asked for a better game

This game has broken me in the best way and I love both Andromeda and the trilogy

Anyways, little freakout over, just really happy right now

I love almost every character and interaction and I really hope they make another Andromeda game because these characters are wonderful and deserve a chance to keep growing just like Shepard and their friends did

Jaal: Oh, come on now, as if that is somehow worse than the time Ryder— *cuts to Ryder, who is signaling for him not to say shit* —uh, the time Ryder definitely did not die on the Archon's ship!

Ryder: Hey, I got better, didn't I?

Evfra: I swear, if you two don't end up getting yourselves killed —permanently killed— one of these days, I'll do it myself.

Return to Andromeda

I'm back playing Andromeda, because maybe Veilguard was more like it than I remember? Maybe I'm being more critical than it deserves?

(I'm not).

I got swept into my internal story like Bioware used to be able to inspire. My favourite play is romancing Reyes up until he gets Sloan killed (I don't really need to warn for spoilers for a game this old do I??), then breaking it off from the hurt of the deception plus the shitty position he puts Ryder in, then ending up with Jaal.

I just love the story. I can see Keema saying to Reyes "You need to tell them." And Reyes saying, "I will. When the moment is right." Knowing he's being a coward, knowing Keema is right and he risks losing Ryder if he doesn't come clean. He figures he'll get Sloan out the picture, then approach Ryder with the truth, and a gift; the ability to put down an outpost, with his promised protection.

But fate intervenes.

He didn't expect Sloan to bring the Pathfinder to the meeting. Sloan has not been welcoming to them before then, and Ryder showed no friendliness to her in turn. But of course; the outpost. The wildcard. Sloan played it, using it to have the Pathfinder at her side.

Everything is set up; he can't change the course now. And if it was cowardly to hide the truth from Ryder before, it would be even more cowardly to run now. He has no choice but to put on a brave face. He plays the part he's written for himself, hoping Ryder chooses not just him, but a better future for Kadara.

They do, but he loses them in the process.

He knew Kadara would come at a cost. There's a price for everything. He thought he knew what it would be. He keeps up the brave face, but it hurts more than he could have predicted. There is so much he'll never be able to tell them. They put the distance between them, hurt in their voice. He should have trusted them.

He lies to himself about deeply buried hope for the future. Maybe, maybe, maybe he can earn their trust back. What they had between them was special. There is no one else in the galaxy like Ryder.

For Ryder, it was a devastating moment. They feel unclean, thinking again and again about how they could have warned Sloan, knowing that it was an impossible choice. Why couldn't Reyes have told them the truth? They could have avoided the whole situation. Why couldn't Reyes have had an honest duel? Was there really so much at stake he had to use such underhand, dishonest tactics? They wished they'd never been there. When they leave the planet they resolve to do everything in their power to never return. They want to forget the whole mess happened.

They throw themself into work, trying to make choices that make them feel like an honest person again. They tell the Moshae that Akksul can be saved. They want to believe it, believe that no one needs to be left to die again. They take comfort from the trust their teammates have in them; there is only honesty here. It's safe. No matter how they feel about Kadara, it seems like when they're in control of the decisions the right ones are made.

And then Akksul points a gun at Jaal's face.

In the moment they see another person dying, another death because they do not act. But Jaal is telling them to trust him, and it is his life. They hesitate, and Akksul takes the shot.

He misses.

It was the right decision again, but this time it feels like the opposite side of the coin to Kadara. The person who was facing the gun made the choice and the whole time they knew what they were walking into. When Jaal rests his forehead against theirs, the ocean of fears recedes.

With Jaal, they are healed. There's no subterfuge, no games. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He communicates with them, eagerly and openly. They know how he feels, where they stand. They are a team. He goes where they go, and they listen to him in turn.

Reyes will hear about it from his contacts; how Ryder and the Angara ended up together. He hopes they're happy, knows that Jaal is likely better to them than he ever was. He knows from his contacts that Jaal was highly sought after; that he is deserving of the Pathfinder's love. But it stings nonetheless, and for the rest of his life he'll see them as the love that he lost, no matter what his future holds.

Jake Ryder was the son of the original human Pathfinder in the Andromeda Initiative, Alec Ryder, and was close to his twin, Sara, growing up. In the Milky Way, he served in the Systems Alliance military, and was effectively "designated biotic" during his military tenure, assisting his cohorts with his ability to control mass effect fields. Before becoming Pathfinder, he served as Recon Specialist in his father's team.

BIOGRAPHY

Nova was born on the Citadel one minute before her twin brother Orion, on March 21, 2163. When she was 6, her biotics manifested, and she later received the L3 implant when she was 14. Ellen’s connections allowed her to receive the best implant and amp, allowing her to reach her full biotic potential. After receiving her implant, Nova trained at Grissom Academy until she was 18, when she joined the Alliance with Orion. After boot camp, Alec was dishonorably discharged from the Alliance, and the twins’ military careers were essentially over. Nova was assigned a peacekeeping role to defend colonists in the Attican traverse from raiders and pirates. A year later, she was able to join a Prothean research team, where she spent most of her days scouting possible dig sites, defending the researchers from raiders, and using her biotics to help dig up artifacts. Prothean artifacts were interesting at first, but Nova quickly grew bored of them and wanted more adventure in her life. When Alec contacted her and Orion about the Andromeda Initiative, she didn’t hesitate to join.

PERSONALITY

Nova is adventurous, and loves discovering new things. She is smart, but she can also be reckless at times, which doesn’t always go well for her. She’s generally easy to get along with, as she is casual and laid back, and she’s sarcastic and likes to joke around. She loves to spend time with her crew in between missions, and she’s loyal to each and every one of them. She can be obnoxious and impatient at times, but she’s got a good balance between her smarts, urge to explore, and recklessness that makes her good at being a Pathfinder.

She does have several scars. Mainly ones she accidentally gave herself from cooking, playing around too much with a knife, or messing around.

EYES.  Goldish-brown, leaning more on gold.

HAIR.  A light brown shaggy hair around her face.

FACE.  There's a faint net-like scar on her left eye. Most of the time you can barely see it until it hits a certain angle. She has a round yet long face. On her neck is a dark blue tattoo.

CONFESSION:

My favorite antagonist for Mass Effect  Andromeda was Akksul. I just prefer sympathetic villains instead of second rate cartoonish ones .  While I did agree he needed to be stopped because he was posing a threat to his own people, I could not hate him.  I felt bad for him.  I just followed Jaal's lead and  even saw the regret on Akksul's face after firing that shot.  And everybody just walking away leaving Akksul alone was just so fitting.  And the e-mail Akksul sent Ryder was the perfect final touch.  That proverb really resonated with me. The whole Akksul/Roekaar Arc was one of the best parts of the game.
