Learning Music Log - Day 1:
I am someone that has never played an instrument, never been part of band, never even known how to start. For the past year I’ve been fascinated with Lo-Fi music, so I figured I’d try making some myself. Again, with no experience in anything myself, I figured I’d need some tools to make electronic music. An old friend of mine from high school had some songs signed and sold through Beatport, and I remember him using FL Studio at home. Just messing around with the tools was interesting to watch, but the interface and process always intimidated me.
Another artist I follow on my art blog, Artem Solop, is also big into making his own electronic music and beats. Although I do not know him personally, I have always liked his style. The unique thing about his method, is that he utilizes his Nintendo DS and Switch as instruments. Synths, Compressors, and Drum Machines have always intrigued me, but I could never tell one thing from the other, and here was this guy using them from his Nintendo consoles to make something sounds good. Cables routed from one system to another – how does he do it?
I figured I’d plunge in headfirst – well, as “headfirst” as I could while still adhering to baby steps…I know the hobby can be expensive if left unchecked.
Tumblr media
I bought KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch about 2 weeks ago to start this journey – an inexpensive grab through Amazon for just 30$. I have no idea what it is, but it’s what Artem seems to use in his videos. The tool is described as such:
-Robust music composition/production tools in a compact cartridge
-Simple to use and easy to understand; anyone can create music anywhere and everywhere
-16 different synthesizer and drum machine gadgets with additional DLC gadgets available
-Gadgets have retro-inspired tactile control knobs that you can turn by rotating the Joy-Con controllers
And to be honest, it did not disappoint. It was a great way to wrap my mind around the synths, tracks, and “scenes” as they are laid out in the simple to use interface. I was determined to begin this journey in a self-taught, but organized manner. I had googled a few things before starting anything:
1. Simple music theory – I had no idea that notes/scales determine how well something sounds. A lot of you may think that that’s obvious, but again, my music knowledge started in 4th grade with a mandatory recorder recital and ended with the 5 colors on the guitar hero guitar. At the most basic level, I learned that scales could be set (C Major, A minor, etc.) and most tools used to create music (a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short) had a setting to allow “helpers” that would highlight keys in any given scale. From there on, I figured out that experimenting and playing randomly sounded better if I followed the scale guidelines.
2. How different chords on a piano/keyboard evoke different emotions depending on what scale you’re in. Major chord happy. Minor chord sad.
3. After talking to my fiancé (a former band geek that played flute!) I also learned that the concept of “chords” did not apply to the flute, so I also realized how different instruments were from one another…
Aside from those few things, I didn’t really look into anything else before attempting to ‘craft’ a song on the Switch.
Immediately, I could tell that the different synth gadgets varied and specialized in different things. The Marseille gadget had some great piano, electric piano, and orchestral instrument presets; the Helsinki gadget was great at ambient/relaxing sounds; the London drum gadget was great at…well…drum sounds and beats! Each of the city inspired gadgets brought something unique to the table. The Switch’s controls were intuitive. Copying and pasting, moving notes, playing tracks vs. just playing scenes was something that I was able to pick up in around 30 minutes without even ‘sniffing’ the user guide. By messing around I actually learned more about notes, half beats, and chord progressions all on my own.
Before I knew it, I had crafted a song that was about 3 minutes long. Deep, ambient intro, catchy simple melody, and the typical ‘lo-fi’ drums set to 79 BPM. I was impressed at how good it sounded. I knew there were things I was messing up, or could probably do better, but I was still proud of it.
Tumblr media
Hopping on to YouTube I found a TON of tutorials covering music theory, lo-fi beat making lessons, “dos and don’ts”, best plugins for DAWs and more. Before long, I invested in an AKAI Professional MPK Mini Play USB MIDI Keyboard controller (hastily, as it seems like the Arturia Minilab might have been a better grab? Lmk), got set up with a subscription to Melodics HQ to learn the basics of playing a keyboard, and installed FL Studio on my computer. After a week of using the Korg Gadget on Switch, I found that FL Studio had a bunch of the same principals in its interface, and I found myself digging in with minimal research into how to use the tool.
By purchasing the Korg Gadgets online, I was able to continue using the same tools I was already familiar with on the Switch inside of FL Studio’s more robust interface.
I was able to recreate the song I made on the Switch in FL Studio. This was a great way to familiarize myself with the tool in an almost step-by-step tutorial I had already made for myself.
After I had gotten a grip with using FL Studio at a basic level, I decided to try mirroring some Lo-fi beat YouTube tutorial videos. To my surprise, I found myself not really liking the final product, even after following the instructor’s guidelines. I don’t think I am a fan of “oh you NEED to do this and this for it to be a good song”. I do think that a basic understanding of music theory is key before even starting, but I don’t know how I feel about new and upcoming musicians following strict rules about how something should sound when it’s literally an art form used for expression and fun.
I was happier with the first song I made just messing around on my Switch than the song I made trying to emulate a Lo-fi beat guided by a professional producer on YouTube… and it got me thinking…I think Giorgio Moroder was right in that one Daft Punk song:
“Once you free your mind about a concept of
Harmony and of music being correct
You can do whatever you want
So nobody told me what to do
And there was no preconception of what to do”
I’m looking forward to learning more – after all, it’s only been a few days!

It's been a long journey so far
So hey, after a while you are hearing (or reading?) something from my blog again. "A sign of life!" you might think but oh well, who knows when my next post will be?
Well, well, well. I will try to write more now, but the reason is not that I want anyone to read this but it is more like a practice for me to train my writing skills and hone my English as you may know that I am not a native English speaker.
So, what have I been up to until now? Truth to be told, not much. I did some work on Mononoke, an Anime CMS (Content-Management-System), rewrote FoOlSlideX from the core, worked a little on my own site, and some minor stuff as well.
But my main problem until a few days ago was not my lack of motivation but rather the fact that my graphics card broke down. It stopped working for no reason after just barely a year of service! The hell? So I got a new one from a friend of mine who bought a new one not too long ago, so that was all of the money I saved until that point (around 250€).
Now you may wonder: "250€? That's all you saved???"
Well no, I saved around 500€ until that point, but I recently bought a Reel-to-Reel machine, the Akai X-200D, in perfect condition, refurbished by a professional not too long ago for around 190€. Now there are still 60€ missing. With this money, I went ahead and bought some tapes as well as cassettes for me to record and listen to.
(Video) "I heard there's a rumor going 'round There's gonna be a showdown I heard there's a rumor going 'round One of us is leaving town" (Album: "Eric Woolfson Sings The Alan Parsons Project That Never Was", Track: "Rumor Going Round" by Eric Woolfson)
I spent my time recording some tracks from Discs onto this tape. At that time, I was a little stupid and recorded it on the 3-3/4 IPS (Inches Per Second) speed, so in the end it sounded not as glamorous as the other tape you can see there, which I recorded on 7-1/2 IPS, that simply sounds magnificent!
I should do a blog post about Eric Woolfson, Alan Parsons and how their music quite literally changed my life as well. Anybody should remind me of that (if somebody reads this of course).
Then I moved some time ago and got a new room. It is quite small now, but I feel really comfortable now. I got my small TV on the same white cupboard along with the Akai, all of the components of my Hi-fi system.
I could do a post about this as well! Why not, I guess? Maybe you can share yours as well :D (At least if you got one. If you don't, you should get one!).
So well, I don't know what to talk anymore in this post. All I wanted to do is to tell you that "Hey, I'm alive! I made it out of the hospital!", nothing more.
Until then!
Best regards and stay healthy, Selim!

Wanting The Super Nintendo.
June 93, I became a very lucky 10 year old. I’d been wanting the Super Nintendo for around a year and my birthday was fast approaching. I’m not going to delve into the facts of why or how I received quite a few SNES game with the console, I was just lucky and thus my parents were after, quite out of pocket. Either way, kudos for my parents on choosing the games since only six months earlier I received a Game Gear and some new SEGA console and Amiga games. I think they knew, dep down that one day I’d be writing a blog about it and amazingly, ended up in a few books talking about the games they bought for me.
I kind of remember the full line up of games, still owning all of them bar three. One I traded in, one an ex-girlfriend took a long time ago and one that simply just went walkabouts.
Instead of remembering the games I got with the system, I thought I’d talk about the lead up to wanting the SNES and how how I met one for the very first time.
It was around Christmas 92’ when I saw my first ever grey box of joy. I was dragged out in the snow to do some mid December Christmas shopping. The usual. BHS, C&A and al the other giants of UK consumerism along the way which sadly are now defunct. I’d always ask to go into Dixons in Romford. Back then, apart from VHS players and Hi-Fis, Dixons were actually a leading force in the main high street video & computer game sector. I remember seeing the Amiga 500 in the window running Speed ball 2 Brutal Deluxe in the Dixons Store in Clacton-On-Sea high street if my memory serves me correct.
Tumblr media
Walking into the Romford store, I remember the constant heat emitting from everything, the smell of electronics working over time whilst the latest AKAI Hi-Fi blared out Simply Red’s Stars compact disc on loop. Towards the back of the store, near the till were a group of teens and adults making a fuss over a TV.
Aw I got closer, I could here the noise. The music. Then I saw it. On a grey, metal shelve, tilted forward slightly, with a signal beaming red light, staring at me. No noise, just sleekness, coolness. It was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, because that’s what we called it back then.
I spent more time looking at the heavily displayed console, with all it’s surrounding hot top touch glowing red Nintendo logo lit up on each side of the shelve. The staff in the store had even taken the time to place two chairs in front of it and removing the halogen light above the displayed SNES form the ceiling for added, extra dramatic effect. You’d think the second thing I’d look at was the TV screen, but no. I traced the wire from the joy-port to a young fellows hands and there, comfy and snug, laid in the palm of his hands, the most detailed, smooth and intricate looking controller I’d ever seen. The colours, red, blue, green & yellow glared back at me. It was right then, that precise moment in time that before I’d even looked at the screen, I decided I needed one.
I needed it.
First thing that came to mind was that after all the hype in magazines, all those pictures of that ugly grey and purple US version I’d seen in Mean Machines, it suddenly dawned at me that we got the Japanese version. I had to tell my Mum & Dad. ‘Mum, Dad, we got the Japanese one’ I said.
Tumblr media
They had no idea what was going on. I was a rambling mess of a kid in an electronics sweet shop.
That’s when I see, for the first time in action, F-Zero. To use the now common phrase of ‘My mind was blown’ is in no way an underestimation. I was gone. With the fairy’s. I instructed the bemused parents to leave me in the shop whilst they naff off and continue to shop.
Forwarding on from this life changing event, quite literally as I’m still talking about it to this day, June 93. I got one. Did I care it was PAL? Nope. I’d already done my research and decided how best to spend future pocket money, if any, on a converter.
I didn’t care. I had a Super Nintendo. Height of Summer in 1993.
It seems my next post will no doubt remember the first games I played on my own.

Amazon Takes On Shipment Obstacle For Australian Vendors.
Azon started from very humble starts when they initially came into the scene they marketed books just online. No matter the fact that over 205mn customers in the United States shop online, as well as an ordinary customer invests around $3,000 each year, we see a lot of ecommerce services vanishing entirely within the initial couple of years because their inception, while a lot of those that survive cannot generate sales according to their assumptions. This would certainly be a boon to Amazon.com, as providing even more Prime-eligible products makes a Prime subscription more valuable since it offers customers, Amazon.com's essential customers, even more choices, which could cause added purchases. There is additionally a big market on eBay for "classic" hi-fi tools, cams, old computer systems and also computer hardware and more. In 2015 I found an Akai Reel-to-reel tape deck at a garage sale for $25 and the seller threw in 10 reels of tape. While all the business have actually grown income over the last couple of years, Amazon's development has actually been absolutely meteoric as it clocked huge sales mostly in retail (taking share from opponents) yet likewise in modern technology (being a first mover in facilities as a service, or IaaS). 23 - We've learnt through a number of readers who sent their phones right into Symbol that the business has actually been unresponsive, and the Better Business Bureau of San Diego gives the firm an F score When gotten to by The Huffington Post, Nicholas Fiorentino, the business's creator and principal advertising officer, said that Emblem is experiencing delivery hold-ups, as well as he's functioning to fix the concern. This can influence the retailer negatively, as they could not sell as high as they anticipated to actually make a profit, or the consumer's when on the internet shops reduced edges in order to become more competitive or items are purchased from invalid retailers since they had the best price. As may quite appropriately be anticipated both business (Amazon.com and eBay) that both stand to benefit from any sales that are made by means of their web sites do take a specific degree of responsibility should there ever be a troubles with any one of the purchases. WooCommerce give among the very best ecommerce platforms about, as well as what makes them so terrific is the wealth of expansions and plugins that you can incorporate right into your shop. Amazon description writing is a chance that if used appropriately can aid in bring in leads to your products. The very first time you access this section of the Amazon.com website, you will certainly be required to the Sell on Amazon website. A well prepared and implemented method in addition to an excellent eCommerce Internet Advancement Business could make your eCommerce site successful and also an asset to your organisation. Contact the Amazon.com consumer solution department to set up your account for FBA as soon as you have an Amazon.com selling account. Ensure that you have sufficient item inventory readily available to ship your Amazon.com orders, as well as carefully check your stock levels as your products start to market. I discover that if I list an arbitrary option of 100 publications, regarding 25% of them will certainly sell every month. The gliding scale: My suggestion, no matter just what you are offering, is to supply varied item rates. However lets claim your enthusiasm was yard sales as well as deal hunting and you understood that weekly you can find as well as provide hundreds of publications, CDs, DVDs, etc Track sales that came from other people's website. Now, if you wish to earn money, you should invest some time in looking into a particular niche to earn certain there is a big sufficient need and target audience to supply you with sufficient sales making a great earnings.

A Quick Intro To Amazon.com FBA.
Did you know that Amazon is not the vendor of whatever on Amazon? Amazon.com has actually been taking a lot more control of its logistics network with Gratification by Amazon (FBA) efforts, but SWA would give it virtually full control over its orders.Previously, Amazon.com has provided its third-party vendors stockroom monitoring software application as well as gratification help to both aid sellers and have more power over its logistics. This holds true as a whole, yet if you actually want to know concerning the appeal of a particular title, you additionally have to take into consideration the publication date and also the length of time it has been marketed on As an example, a publication with an sales-rank of 100,000 that has just been released and also marketed on for a few days might be incredibly popular in the future as well as reach the top ten. There is also a huge market on eBay for "vintage" hi-fi devices, cams, old computer systems and computer and more. Last year I found an Akai Reel-to-reel tape deck at a garage sale for $25 and also the vendor included 10 reels of tape. Fulfilment by Amazon has actually led to some impressive tales of little endeavors all of a sudden experiencing enormous development in sales, some by having Amazon fulfil orders for products normally refined straight to buyers by people offering on Amazon.com and also sometimes by vendors on other sites, such as eBay as well as Etsy, conforming to FBA. NFC, as an example, could be used in 2 methods: to drive individuals on the road to your on-line shop or a certain online promo (using scanning a physical chip) as well as additionally, to permit consumers to access even more details about items in-store. As the framework called for fore-commerce to be feasible reaches even the smallest neighborhoods, boundaries as well as political power will be much less prominent in regards to success compared to a company's ability to successfully market online, develop a neighborhood of followers, and create long lasting partnerships with their target audience. There are 3 means you can market physical products on Amazon: sell other people's items on Amazon.com and deliver the orders yourself; market other individuals's items on Amazon.com as well as let Amazon.com ship and offer your very own products on Amazon and also let Amazon deliver them. Additionally, WooCommerce-built shops can market any sort of products consisting of online, physical, external as well as downloadable or associate products. For instance, if you're a logo carrier - you'll be marketing your "logo layout" service for $150 - to which purchasers have the ability to come, ask questions and acquisition. Customers review our Standard Vendor's Manual; they wish to start offering however simply can't determine what to offer or ways to begin. Amazon claim on their web site experience has actually shown that consumers are much more comfortable purchasing items with going along with images. After that, Amazon.com will certainly offer you a recap of your listing to inspect and also confirm exactly what their charges will be if the product markets. You need to establish an Amazon Vendor Account and after that just begin detailing your products for sale. Three months after opening up in Australia, the world's No. 1 online store stated vendors could pay it to load and deliver their products through its new Fulfillment by Amazon.com (FBA) program. So design it carefully; too many items, offers, bestselling products in a careless manner can perplex the site visitor as well as will cause high bounce rate. Amazon.com figures out which seller to function based upon a proprietary algorithm which assesses the vendor's cost, the gratification choices readily available, and also the seller score. Any kind of business that makes an item uses a sales rep who is responsible for showcasing as well as marketing products to major retailers. As a matter of fact, 42 percent of leading ecommerce sites lack category-specific filtering for some of their core product categories.

i almost forgot that @heartdevouring tagged me in a thing!! which is sad because i was so excited to get tagged <3
RULES : ANSWER all questions, ADD one question of your own and then TAG as many people as there are questions whoever i want cause i don’t even know 50 people on tumblr :)
i’m gonna tag at the top, because this is long. tagging people makes me so nervous, thanks anxiety!! feel free to ignore altogether. @akai-coat @bigbrotherlouis @jiksax @busy-nothings @alligatornyc @magicalrocketships @rickshawala @flora-flauna @gretawhy
live session or studio session? this is off to a bad start because i legitimately don’t understand what this question is asking! like a live recording or a studio recording of a song? i only enjoy live recordings like...while i’m there listening to it. i hate watching concert videos on youtube or whatever, and i never take photos or video at shows. i’ve been to around 80 live shows for various artists, so i love me some live music, but i still prefer to listen to the meticulously mixed and balanced music that comes from a studio session. IF THAT’S EVEN WHAT THIS IS ASKING?
coke or pepsi? i can’t drink soda because it hurts my mouth, and i don’t like fluids that much in general :( :( on the one hand, i’ve never even tasted pepsi? but i had coke exactly once and i hated it. so, neither.
disney or dreamworks? i guess disney but in a super casual “maybe i’ll watch ‘cinderella’ one more time someday” way and not like “i wanna get married at disney AND go there for my honeymoon AND go back every single year and never visit anywhere else ever disney disney disney” way.
coffee or tea? i love them both so much in so many varieties. if i had to choose, i would choose coffee, but i wouldn’t turn down either. i’ve been drinking a lot of taro milk tea lately and it’s fucking amazing.
books or movies? lol i’m one of those jerks who’s like “i’m too busy to read a book!!!!!!!!” but i have no problem getting through a 100k fic in one weekend. okay actually, i feel like these days i don’t super love books OR movies, i just love fanfic and tv shows, and that’s because both of them give you sooooooo much backstory and characterization, and you get to spend so much time living with them in a way you don’t get from a movie. that being said, when i was a kid i used to stay up reading in the bathroom with a flashlight until 3am like every night. i am a lapsed book lover.
windows or mac? mac
dc or marvel? ugh i love the old campy batman show, it was an important part of my childhood and my weird relationship with my father. and i LOVED “lois and clark: the new adventures of superman.” so i love that sort of nostalgia feeling i get from dc. actually you know what, i was gonna hedge and say dc for old stuff and marvel for new stuff, but i’m going dc regardless, because i’m not super into all the new marvel properties anyway. dc, final answer. batgirl could get it.
xbox or playstation? the last game system i played was a super nintendo, but i was always more of a sega genesis gal tbh
night owl or early riser? because of my schedule and my shitty decision-making, it ends up being both. i sleep like four hours each night :/
cards or chess? i’ll go cards, but i am probably garbage at both
chocolate or vanilla? like, you can’t ruin anything by adding a really beautiful freshly scraped vanilla bean to it, whereas there is a lot of extremely shitty chocolate in the world. or, i guess mostly in america, we’re pretty shit at chocolate :(
vans or converse? converse. i have like seven pairs of chucks right now, though most of them are falling apart.
star wars or star trek? star trek: the next generation. omg it’s on netflix??? i’m gonna marathon the hell out of that 🙃
one episode per week or marathoning? MARATHON. my attention span is too short to keep up with something i only see once a week.
gandalf or obi-wan? i literally don’t care at all
heroes or villains? i don’t know, just be nice?
john williams or hans zimmer? i have no opinion about this
disneyland/disney world or six flags? i kind of hate all theme parks, but i really especially hate disney theme parks because i think it’s a huge scam. it’s expensive as shit, and there’s this creepy mythology around it where we brainwash kids into wanting to go there before they even understand wtf it is, and you’re not a good parent if you don’t take your kids there, and it’s EXPENSIVE AS SHIT, and you wait in lines for ten million hours, unless you hire a kid in a wheelchair to pretend to be your kid so you can cut lines (this is a real thing, people are fucking monsters). it’s just extremely unappealing to me, but the corporation seems to be doing okay without my support. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
forest or sea? i like hiking and i don’t like swimming, so let’s go forest. however, i love birds, but i REALLY love fucking weird deep sea creatures, so this is tough. i don’t wanna go for a swim or anything, but i would get in some kind of boat and look at weird fucking rays and anemonefish and shit like that.
flying or reading minds? when i was a kid, i legitimately thought people could read my mind, and it was The Worst, so let’s go with flying. so i can hang out with birds :)
twin peaks or northern exposure? never seen northern exposure, so twin peaks
harry potter or lord of the rings? i really liked the lotr books and really did not care about the lotr movies. i am not super passionate about harry potter books or movies, but i fucking love one direction harry potter AUs, so let’s go potter. i found out today that my patronus is a chow dog.
cake or pie? both both both but if i have to choose i would pick pie but also both both both
you are banished to a desert island, which benedict cumberbatch character would you choose to take with you? THIS IS MY FAVORITE QUESTION IN THE WHOLE THING. BECAUSE. THIS MEANS I GET TO BE ON AN ISLAND WITH VICTORIAN SCIENTIST JOSEPH FUCKING HOOKER. DARWIN’S BEST FRIEND!!!!!!! he could teach me about plants, and then we could gossip about darwin and huxley!!!!! omg i want it so bad
train or cruise ship? i would rather drive, but i guess a train is fine.
brian cox or neil degrasse-tyson?  neil. he can be Too Much, but i like that he’s actively trying to defend science in a mainstream, accessible way.
wizard of oz or alice in wonderland? i’ve never made it all the way through wizard of oz because i was too scared of the flying monkeys :(
fanfiction or fanart? i am more into fic personally but good on you for creating something whatever it is <3
the hunger games - books or movies? books
be able to see the future or travel into the past? fuck the future, i wanna hang out with dinosaurs and/or victorian scientists
han solo or luke skywalker? yeah i don’t care. princess leia.
lilacs or sunflowers? omg don’t get me started on plants, i love em!!! turning sunlight into food, little legends :’)
spring or autumn? spring is good but it only lasts for about 14 seconds around here. we pretty much go from “ahhhhh it’s too cold!!!” straight into “ahhhhh it’s too hot!!!!”
campfire or fireplace? campfire 🔥🔥
french fries or onion rings? fries
truth or dare? truth. i’m pretty open about most things, but i ain’t doing shit and you can’t make me :) :)
winter or summer? i kinda hate them both. summer is too hot for me. but in winter, you have snow, which is the worst. and then you bundle up to go outside but when you get inside the heat is BLASTING and you’re overdressed for it, so winter ends up being too hot for me, too :( i’m always too hot :( :(
vampires or werewolves? vampire tv shows, werewolf one direction aus
red or blue? GREEN
eyes or lips? idk i mean they both serve an important purpose, i’d like to keep both
burgers or sandwiches? i don’t eat meat so let’s go sandwiches
friends-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers trope? i guess friends to lovers but as long as louis is loved and cherished and gets everything he wants then i don’t care how it started
pizza or pasta? eating pasta right now :)
ancient rome or ancient greece? omg don’t make me choose. classical languages and civilizations and mythology, my first ever academic passion <3 guess who’s read the odyssey in three languages THIS GUY (guess who doesn’t remember any language except for english anymore, also this guy)
foxes or wolves? FOXES!! fennec foxes!! darwin’s foxes!! arctic foxes!! all the lil foxes
mermaids or dragons? MERMAIDS. EXTREMELY MERMAIDS. the only reason i even started liking louis tomlinson is because i read a fic where he was a mermaid, but that’s a story for another day.
sci-fi or fantasy? ahhhhh don’t make me choose. gimme all the dystopian societies
watch a film in theaters or at home? going to the theater sounds exhausting, i’m good right here
fireproof or no more sad songs? fireproof, on account of louis tomlinson rolling and rolling until he changes his luck, which is basically my mantra
bands or individual singers? individual singers within bands
sweet or salty? if i only get one, i’ll choose salty, but i want both. both together!! salted caramel!!! cheese and caramel popcorn mixed in a bag together!! chocolate covered pretzels!!!!
monotype corsiva or comic sans? both of these make me itchy. BUT. i’m gonna go with the dreaded comic sans BUT ONLY BECAUSE i read a thing once that people with dyslexia have an easier time reading it, and i’m on board with it from an accessibility standpoint ONLY.
my question: turtles or frogs? i know this is tough because they are both so awesome <3

Aight, folks. I think we can all agree on one thing: Audio gear is expensive. Unless you find it at a yard sale, sold by someone confusing a heavy duty multi-voiced monster for a kid’s toy (but hey, even a snot-covered Fisher Price xylophone from a Savers can be sampled into something beautiful), the chances of you finding a deal is going to be rare. If you are a sound person, then stories of such rarity buys will be over-told for decades to come; your audio friends will loudly resent you with a smile and ask you retell said legend again, and again. Usually, though, you’ll save up and look forward to the weekend you can finally spend together with your new, shiny, synth companion.
Lately, I find myself longing so badly for my own space. I want a home. I grew up in a family of eight with five siblings, and while my childhood reeked of copious amounts of people related to me going in my room while I was out and touching my shit, and blurting pieces of my diary over the dinner table, and picking up the other end of a landline to eavesdrop, living with roommates is different. I’ve had some INCREDIBLE roommates, and would continue to live with them if I didn’t have to leave Boston/they hadn’t moved. But, I dunno. Although I foresee a future of travels and while I’m a more “go with the wind” type of person, there is something really, really calming about not having all my shit stuffed into a 10′x10′ bedroom in the most boring section of Brooklyn (though I did have a package stolen from me yesterday [and I not-so-secretly hope said salt lamp that s/he stole falls on their foot]). My dream is to someday own a house, once the terrors of student loans have surpassed, and I want a backyard. But, most of all, I want a STUDIO. And today, I am going to leave a list of my dream gear that I currently do not own that I would love to have in my said future studio (NOTE: Many of you have probably seen pictures of me using some of these items. I am lucky enough to have worked in two recording facilities that housed them and, like a good studio person should do, I utilized them to the point where parting ways from some of them still makes me sad. However, they were not mine).
DREAM GEAR
Arturia Minibrute
Some people might kind of wonder why the Minibrute is here: It’s not super expensive for an analog synth (you could probably find it under $300 at this point). But you know what? I don't own it right now, because I had access to it for quite a while before I moved. You’ll hear a great deal of it on my upcoming record, so over the past year or so, I’ve been nonstop mixing tracks I created with it. Even though I *could* buy it right now, I am so frugal with my finances when it comes to buying anything for myself. But, anyway - the Minibrute is great. I love the Microbrute, as well, but the Minibrute has a special place in my heart because of the dirty, gritty noise channel you can add to the mix, along with a sub and three other oscillators. Pretty sweet, especially since it has MIDI, CV, and a straight 1/4″ output. Can’t go wrong. I just love the sound... Anything gritty will have my heart.
OTO Biscuit
I kind of need to just get one of these because of how rare they are. This is the best distortion/bitcrusher I’ve ever used. I love running vocals with it, I love how easily out of control-sensitive it is, and I will love lo-fi for life.
Roland Juno 106
Because, duh. This baybee is a classic. It has six voices. Despite it being fairly easy to track down, I’m well aware that the most common issue with this synth is voices dying (but you gotta remember that you’ll most likely purchase one that’s never had a voice replaced since, like, ever, and it’s from 1984). However, it’s EXPENSIVE to replace voices, and Roland does not create them anymore (it would be wishful thinking for them to, but as they don’t produce the 106s anymore...). BUT, there is someone who created a more functional voice IC replacement (check out Analogue Renaissance for more info on voice replacements. Just be wary that he will charge you for asking questions that have already be answered on his site, so read carefully). I’ve promised myself that I wouldn’t get a dog ‘till I have the time for one (duh?) AND money for any unexpected vet visits, so I’ll do the same for the Juno 106 (unless purchased with replacement voices).
ARP Odyssey 1978 MK III
VINTAGE. NOT THE REMAKE. NOT THE APP. NOT THE MINI OR FULL SIZE FROM KORG. NOT THE EBAY SELLER PRETENDING IT’S A VINTAGE WHEN IT’S A KORG. I SEE YOU.  IT NEEDS TO BE THE VINTAGE MK III FROM 1978. Okay, let me explain: This synth holds a huge place in my heart. During the hardest parts of my life in late 2015 to mid 2016, I couldn’t sleep normal hours, or create. My anxiety was out of control and I had literally three full on attacks a day and I didn’t want anybody to know. So, even though I couldn’t do much to fix any of those issues at the time, I needed to do something. So,  I would force myself to pour over the manual for this synth every time I felt a panic attack creeping up, and would press random keys and hit record. The old sound of it would distract me. I don’t know. I just associate this synth with comfort. Every time I was sad, I would have this synth in front of me. I’d leave my apartment at odd hours of the night to go sit with it and hope something good would be recorded out of it. So, yeah - when I buy this synth, it needs to be vintage. It’s just sentimental and if I could buy the same synth I used, I would. And, yes, I love how it gets out of tune. A whole track on Living Proof is totally in tune with the Odyssey, but out of tune with... everything else. You’ll see.
ARP 2600
Again - the original, not the TTSH clone. The first time I ever saw this synth, it did not fascinate me -- I was 19, and I was terrified. It was 2009, and I was enrolled in Michael Brigida’s class at Berklee College of Music (he was my modular synthesis & signal flow professor and he’s worked on every ARP machine ever and was one of the best teachers I have ever had). Back then, the synth was held in A59 in 150 Massachusetts Ave. The room had no windows and reeked of mildew, and on the first day of class, myself and my classmates trekked down the hall from our classroom and watched Michael calmly create different patches. I was the shortest in the class, and I was the only girl, and I was painfully shy.  I wore a black fitted hoodie with spikes almost every day and I was fucking weird. Everyone in the class just seemed to understand what was going on and I just stood there, hardly able to see anything (because, well, I’m just shy of 5′3′’). Listening in awe, I felt like a total idiot. I had no idea what this modularapolis kajargen was and I was too afraid to ask for help. I clearly remember Brigida telling us to ‘not fear the synth!’ and to ‘make it fear you!', but everyone in the class just seemed at ease and I was, well, not!  Fast forward four years -- I got a lot more experience in the game audio and synth hardware world, and I was hired by the department, and the more I worked there, the more I saw that, sure, some people DID just have a knack for that kind of stuff right off the bat, but a lot of times, people wore a concrete-made poker face. I had already been employed by AKAI at that point and had gotten over my insecurities a little bit. And it was ME that everyone was now asking for help, since, you know, that was my job (those days, I worked 80+ hours a week between there and AKAI). I felt a little less alienated  that I was not the only person in fear of getting my ego hurt around the 2600, and I used this time to really learn it so I could help others understand it. Anyway, I’d go into work on days the facility was closed, and own it so I was more prepared to teach students it when class started back up. This synth taught me a lot about getting past insecurities, and guess what - I’m not so afraid of that synth anymore! Ha!
Yamaha CS15
This synth is so underrated and so cool. Made in 1979 for a few years onwards, it just sounds like how you think it would. Good luck finding one online that isn’t from Japan and doesn’t require a power converter. And if you find one and are feeling generous, my birthday is June 1st.
THE KLEE
Okay. I used modular eurorack systems quite a bit when I still lived in Boston. I do not own a system right now. However, The Klee. Is. A. Monster. I was immediately drawn to it because 1. it’s a sequencer and, um, I love sequencers and 2. it has green LEDs and buttons. I unapologetically love the color scheme of that thing, and it sounds fucking awesome. However, it will take up almost your entire rack case. Google it (sorry not sorry). You can build it from scratch for a little over $500 or buy it complete for a little less than $1,000.
 Avalon 737sp
Coolest preamp & compressor ever. I always “got” EQs, but compressors used to confuse the crap out of me. Ratios? Math!? I wanna do MUSIC (...till you realize a music technologist is more mathematically inclined than you’d be willing to admit, ha!). However, the Avalon really helped me understand what was happening to sound while changing up parameters manually, as opposed to staring at a stock plugin in Pro Tools and visually trying to hear results, if that makes sense. I just understand tech better when hands on. Anyway, one of my favorite producers of all time, Mark Ronson, has used them in recordings and the second I learned that, bam. Look at me! I can make myself burp AND I can use compressors with my eyes closed!
Empirical Labs Distressor
Mostly because every studio I’ve worked in has them next to each other and I like the comparison. And it sounds good. I still prefer the 737 but I love this thang, too.
Moog Sub 37
SOUNDS GOOD. MY MAIN HOBBY INCLUDES GOING INTO SAM ASH AND WAITING FOR GOSPEL GROUPS TO FINISH THEIR SYNTH JAM SESH SO I CAN GO INTO THE ISOLATION ROOM AND ROCK OUT ON THIS MOOG.
Electro-Voice RE20
Just like the ‘wand chooses the wizard’ (and yes, I heard Ollivander’s voice when I wrote that), everyone will usually resonate to at least one mic that makes their non-traditional voice sound... okay. Heck, maybe it’ll even sound good! I really adore this microphone. I haven’t bought it because I have spent time in facilities over the past 4 years that have owned it everywhere I’ve went, but someday, it shall be mine. It’s mainly used in broadcasting, but, I dunno. I use it when recording my own voice singing because I just like how it makes it sound. I also like that Thom Yorke used it in a show once. Very coolio. Google ‘Radiohead RE20′ and I’m sure that basement show will pop up.
DSI Tempest
Um, coolest drum machine I’ve ever used. That thing is a beast. I love the weird sounds you can make, the sequences you can create, and I’m happy that DSI finally created a couple updates for it. Hell yizzzzzeah.
Crumar Bit-01
This synth came to my attention the other day and ohhhhhh my god, it sounds good. It’s so awesome. I played three seconds of a demo video and I said ‘gimme’.
Otari MTR12
Very cool tape machine I started to mess with at one of the studios I support. It looks like an oven. Everything just sounds better with tape.

And that is all I can think of, for now. May you all have a synth filled week.
Cheers!

Look for Experts
To start out, the Amazon.com FBA program stands for Gratification by Amazon. On eBay seller I recognize acquisitions large great deals of the warm selling things on ebay.com (mobile phone boosters, pocketknife, etc.) and reverses and also markets them in lots of 10 or 25 to various other eBayers that want to buy for resale. There are other benefits for sellers, one of the largest being that FBA lets vendors leave the entire job of dealing and also promoting products with buyers and satisfying orders to Amazon, while the vendor focuses on much more lucrative jobs, like sourcing brand-new items, for example, and developing themselves in alternative extra industries. There is also a big market on eBay for "classic" hi-fi devices, cameras, old computers as well as computer and so on. Last year I discovered an Akai Reel-to-reel tape deck at a garage sale for $25 as well as the seller included 10 reels of tape. The sensible result for e-commerce is to give interactive customization as well as personalization, to ensure that customers feel a "connection" Presently, clothiers, jewelry enterprises, or even razor blade firms are getting into personalization by including engaging interactive experiences to their product as well as brochures. And although that the "Amazon" opportunity has existed for nearly 10 years now (any individual could provide items in its marketplace), the "FBA" version (which is truly hands-off) has actually only started to come to be preferred in the previous 24 months-or-so. The important thing to consider is that most people are concentrated on "supply" (typically over-supply), such as you would certainly see from items which either have a great deal of purchasers or a great deal of suppliers (" smartphones" being a prime example). 5. E-commerce has additionally been defined as a process covering outward procedures that touch consumers, suppliers as well as outside companions while e-business covers inner procedures such as manufacturing, supply administration, product growth, threat management, finance and so on Additionally, WooCommerce-built shops can offer any kind of kind of items consisting of digital, physical, downloadable and also exterior or affiliate items. For example, if you're a logo provider - you'll be selling your "logo layout" solution for $150 - to which customers have the ability to come, ask questions as well as acquisition. If you should take your firm to brand-new markets, you need manufacturers' rep also called independent sales representatives who will certainly be accountable of the sale of your items. These web sites are the most important online company internet sites. This is one feature that aids on-line shops to increase their sales by virtually 45%. Providing the "appropriate" attributes assists consumers recognize the potential of their remedy. Delivering in a timely manner is a must for all the sellers having online stores. With thousands of websites appearing daily, there is no doubt that competitors for consumers in addition to much better ranking in the internet search engine is high on the planet Wide Web. These are actual products to buy on @Amazon It's UNACCEPTABLE for the largest system on the planet to profit from as well as help with the sale of white supremacist and nazi product. Promo of items has shifted gears and focus to online advertising. The version works by Amazon giving users with the capability to send their products to its storage facility, and also having them "fulfilled" by the retain titan (it sends them out) after successful purchase. After registering for a vendor account. Yes, Amazon benefits getting to a wider target market, but it can't be the unique model you utilize to market as well as sell your item, particularly when it's clear they aren't running in your support. We offer you a specially developed solution to boost your company as well as guarantee your Online Company gets presence all over the E-commerce industry.

About that 1 Asian guy in Get Out...
First a warning: this post contains major Spoilers for Jordan Peele’s recent film, Get Out.
If you haven’t seen it, don’t read this. Go see it. Then come back. It’s an incredibly important film with some dark humor and creepy scenes. I’m a total wimp when it comes to horror/thriller films, but this one is really, really great. Go see it!
Tumblr media
So, now that we who have seen it are alone, let’s get to talking about this. Get Out is an important for so many reasons, not the least of which is the social commentary about race, racism, the fetishization of black bodies and black skin, and the themes of white supremacy laced throughout the film. I mean, it’s basically a film about a sci-fi version of cultural appropriation, right?
If you haven’t read these think pieces yet, I highly recommend it! Start here and here.
I want to write about the one Asian character in the film. There he is, on the far right of this photo:
Tumblr media
He is a minor role, has maybe 2 or 3 lines, and simply makes an appearance at a “neighborhood gathering” that is mostly white. I think it is REALLY clever and really important that this Asian man, who is also a person of color, to have been included in this all-important scene.
When the audience finds out a few moments later that this is actually an auction, the Asian Man who just shook Chris’ hand can be seen trying to bid on his body. It’s subtle, it’s clever, and I’m sure most people missed it--but this was so important to include. Because I’m going to say it... Asian people can be among the most prejudiced people I know. You can replace the word “prejudice” with “racist” if it helps frame it better for you, but there is a difference between the two words (just send me a message if you want to know what it is. No time here).
Asians have a bad history of exercising prejudice against other communities of color, namely the black and brown communities. I hate to say it, but some of the worst contributors to the “Model Minority Myth” are Asian people themselves. My theory in life is that every single one of us are always trying to make ourselves out to be better than other people--looking at how Asians tend to do well in school, land respectable jobs like doctors and scientists, and how much money we make, it is easy for Asians to fall under this spell. We’re the “good” people of color. We’re the standard.
But what we don’t realize is that the Asian community (and hence the Model Minority Myth) is used by the system of White Supremacy to continually punch down on black and brown communities. We’re told, “See the Asians did it, why can’t you?” and continuously used as an excuse to continue holding racist attitudes and beliefs about other communities of color. What we don’t see is that as soon as it stops benefiting White Supremacy, we quickly and easily become “the other”.
For example, it says a lot that during one of the more recent periods of heightened racial tensions between police and the black community, the police officers who murdered Michael Brown and Eric Garner were not charged, but Officer Peter Liang, who murdered Akai Gurley was immediately indicted and charged and sentenced.
More than this, though, there are so many stories that are swept under the rug of blatant prejudice against black people from the Asian community.
Earlier this year, an Asian store owner was caught on tape kicking a black woman and putting her in a chokehold. Did you hear about it? I’d be surprised if you did. We’re 25 years out from the LA Riots that began after the beating of Rodney King. And we’re also 25 years out from the time Korean grocery store owner Soon Ja Du shot and killed a 15-year old black girl. This may be one of the biggest reasons Koreatown was central to the LA Riots back in 1992.
There are plenty of stories that include Asian prejudice against black and brown Americans. But, like most instances of prejudice, one does not have to see these stories to know this is true--we simply need to look internally. We look at our families and friends, the attitudes you heard growing up, the times we’ve been scared when walking alone and seeing a black person or brown person walking towards us. Asian prejudice against black folks and brown folks is real, and it’s extremely harmful.
Ultimately, all it does is solidify the platform on which White Supremacy thrives.
This is why the Asian man in Get Out is important. Because prejudice works in all directions and we are all very willing to sweep Asian violence against black folks under the rug. We, the younger Asian generation, cannot be complicit in this any longer. Jordan Peele’s decision to include one Asian Man at the auction of Chris is ingenious and subtle and very, very important. Don’t miss this.
It, prejudice and racism, has to stop with us--with our generation. We’re getting there, with more and more millennials being active for the Black Lives Matter movement. If you haven’t seen the Letter From Young Asian Americans to their Families about Black Lives Matter, you should check it out.
We have a long way to go and we must first look internally. We Asians hold two very important things simultaneously--that we are still people of color who are disadvantaged by systems of White Supremacy.... and that we are also often used as tools to further oppress our black and brown family. Think on it, challenge it, and come join me in critical thinking about ways to stop this.
