Once again thinking about the rise and fall of the Akai family.
Little baby Akai who was his parents' pride and joy from the moment he was born.
Mary and Tsutomu boasting to all their friends about their son who at just a few months old is already showing signs of just how terrifyingly clever he is. He says his first word at just four months old, and by seven months he's talking in full sentences.
Baby Akai who was the spitting image of his mother in terms of looks and personality (minus the dark hair) but loved his father more than anyone in the world
He was always such a good boy. Reading his books and waiting patiently for his parents to come home every evening.
Four-year-old Akai learning that Shukichi is on his way and immediately taking his responsibilities as a big brother very seriously.
At nine years old, walking his baby brother to school for the first time, holding onto his hand tightly so Shukichi doesn't accidentally wander into traffic.
The brothers sneaking into their parent's room to wake them up on Christmas morning
Like all older siblings, he teased and pranked Shukichi all the time but would absolutely throw hands if anyone even looked at his baby brother the wrong way. At ten years old, he got his first suspension for beating one of his classmates into the ground after said classmate wouldn't stop mocking Shukichi, who was always a bit timid and didn't quite know how to stand up for himself yet.
He probably tried to teach Shukichi a few of the Jeet Kune Do moves he learned from Tsutomu because "you need to learn how to protect yourself in case I'm not there". The results were mixed at best, seeing as Shukichi really wasn't into learning martial arts, but Akai did at least manage to drill a few basic self-defense moves into his head.
Young Akai just living a normal, happy life.
And then his father disappears. And he doesn't come back.
His favorite person in the world is gone. And Akai can't just let that go. He needs to find out what happened, if only so that he can finally lay a ghost to rest.
So at just fifteen years old, he leaves behind everything and everyone he's ever known.
He goes to sleep in an unfamiliar bed. His parents don't come into his room to turn off his bedside lamp and take the book off his face that he fell asleep reading. His little brother doesn't wake him up at some ungodly hour in the morning telling him that he had a nightmare and asking if he can sleep with him for the rest of the night.
He tries to maintain contact, he really does. He misses his family so much it hurts. But he's busy with his life in America, and his mother and brother have their own things going on, and it's always been in his nature to withdraw when he's in any type of pain. So the phone calls, the letters, and the Christmas and birthday cards slowly start dwindling, little by little until one day they stop coming altogether.
He gets a baby sister, but he doesn't meet her for seven years. He treats her coldly at first, which is something that he'll regret for the rest of his life–he genuinely didn't mean anything by it, but his first interaction with his mother in years ended in a fight, so he was in a bad mood and unfortunately, little Masumi got the brunt of it.
And he still has his mission to worry about, so while he tries to be there for Masumi as much as possible, he can't be a big brother to her the way he was to Shukichi. He misses so much of her life and milestones, and most of the things Masumi knows about him are stories she's heard, either about his status as an ace sniper or his Jeet Kune Do prowess.
Sometimes, Akai wonders if she would still admire him if he had been a little more present in her life.
Now, Akai is 32 years old and still going to sleep in a place that isn't home. His father is still missing and is most likely dead. His brother isn't an Akai anymore. His sister is essentially living on the run with their mother, who was shrunk by the same drug that killed Haneda Kohji which led to their father being taken away, and both of them believe him to be dead.
His family was whole once.
Now, only time will tell if they can ever be that way again.

this ain’t no place for no hero this ain’t no place for no better man
just some fun headcanon sketches of the Most Normal Family, the Akai-Sera houehold. not pictured are Mary’s younger sister, and also James Black who’s basically the pleasant confirmed bachelor of an uncle
more headcanons below the cut (most of which are pretty specific to my canon divergent fanfiction lmao);
backstory nonsense!
-how does an ostensiblity japanese man join the british secret service? easy, Tsutomu ‘Thomas’ Akai was born in london into a mixed british (japanese & british-caribbean) household. he usually just asks people to call him Tom to make things easier. -Mary Sera’s birth name is Marianne Serafim. she’s from the west midlands in the UK, and comes from a fairly well-off prestigious family (much to the resentment of her younger sister, again not pictured) - Tom and Mary met at basic training after being recruited for MI6 (him, off the streets of petty criminality & her, right out of a PPE degree at King’s). - their relationship was tumultous from the start, between the easy-going Tom who had a very relaxed view on ‘laws’ and ‘rules’, and the high-strung Mary whose entire life had been ‘laws’ and ‘rules’. obviously, they were perfect for each other lmao - when it comes to kids, they tried to “collect” as many nationalities as possible. they made a point of their first being born in Hawaii, for that sweet US citizenship, and their second scraped a Canadian citizenship in much the same way. unfortunately by the time the third was born, this cute goal had kinda been forgotten. - ON THAT NOTE! after tom akai officially went MIA during a job (TM) in december 1993, mary went into Paranoid Secret Agent Lockdown mode. she changed all their names, moved the family several times, and used her vast resources to spy on everything she percieved a threat to her kids, including those same kids. it got pretty unbearable for a while, since she somehow managed to do this while heavily pregnant and then with a newborn on her arm.
the “kids”
- Shuichi (31 at the start of the story, born december 1978) is the ice-cold loose cannon who left home at age 16 and didn’t return for 5-6 years, having already committed several heinous crimes against humanity as part of his, uhh, normal job as a cia agent. dw he eventually got kicked out of the CIA for being a fucking menace. much like his parents, he went into foreign intelligence work. he also makes a point of using his dad’s surname in an ill-advised attempt to draw out people who knew his tom akai (and possibly were involved in his disappearance). he is a violently attractive man, violently attracted to violence. - Shukichi (28, born november 1982) is the Perfect Son: intelligent, charismatic, good-looking, and above all kind. he stayed home and took care of the family even when his older brother ran off, at behest of his mother got himself ‘adopted’ by another family, and eventually went to cambridge (Japanese Studies & Classical Poetry). he now regularly competes in international shogi tournaments. he’s the only one who regularly uses his ‘english’ name, Keith. his siblings often call him ‘kitsch’. - Masumi (16, born march 1994) is the precious baby who can get away with actual murder because everyone loves her. (shuichi suspects this is because she looks the most like their dad.) at the start of the story, she’s about to start sixth form in the UK! for her A-levels she’s taking english lit, psychology, and history; with philosophy and french as AS-levels. (she took her japanese a-level when she was 13, thinking it would be an easy A*. she didn’t study for the exam, and got a B. everyone was aghast.)
dynamics: - shu & kitsch are fairly close in age, so they were kind of each other’s best friends growing up (shu had like no other friends tbh). both liked watching wrestling with their dad, too. between the two, shu always got them in trouble and kichi always talked them out of it. after tom formally “vanished”, their relationship kind of shattered because shuichi went off the deep end and eventually ran away from home. kichi resented him for the longest time, and even now, - mas & kichi grew very close: until she was like 7, he was the only brother she knew, and even afterwards he was the most consistently ‘there’ sibling. more than anything, he’s the one who taught her the native japanese their dad spoke. favourite hobby nowadays is teasing their shuichi for not knowing any pop culture references. they’ve made a game out of it. the loser is ALWAYS shu because he has no idea what “may the fourth be with you” means - shu & mas share a troublemaking and roughhousing streak. masumi fucking WORSHIPS her oldest brother, having first ‘met’ him when she was 7 (after he returned from running away), only to discover he’s “a secret agent??? wtf he’s so cool?!” whenever she sees him nowadays she uses him to get into films she’s technically too young to see. (also she sends him videos of her beating up school bullies so he can teach her jeet kune do. he’s dubiously proud of her)

Hi MTX,
I was re-reading the red woman case and I believe in the first chapter it was mentioned that Shukichi had Sera as his last name when he was in high school. Does that mean he got adopted by the Hanedas after he completed high school, and if so how would that fit in to the timeline regarding the Haneda/Akai family plotline established in this current arc?
He was adopted 10 years ago when he was 18 years old (by the end of high school), since we learned he met Yumi 10 years ago as a Haneda (File 900). It fits with all the established info.
Tumblr media
Before 17 yrs ago: Kohji & Shuukichi meets
17 yrs ago: Kohji dies, Tsutomu leaves his family and disappears, Akai family becomes Sera family and flees to Japan, Shuuichi keeps his father family name and leaves his family for America.
10 years ago: Akai/Sera family reunites, Shuukichi gets adopted by Haneda family, Shuukichi meets Yumi.
3 years ago: Mary & Masumi moves to England, Shuukichi remains in Japan as a Haneda to continue his Shogi career.

My problem with the Akai family plot.
The Akai family is definitely one of the most biggest plot holes in the DC world. A few reasons being-
Honey trapping Akemi to infiltrate the BO was always the plan of the FBI. Did the FBI never investigate the background of the Miyano sisters? Like never?
Yes the Miyano couple has been dead for a while now but Mary and Elena were close enough to chat about their daily lives. Like legit Mary had warned them about the organization even before they had joined in. So they never told each other that they have kids?? How can you not know about your own cousin when the mothers are close? Akai, Akemi and Shuichi were already existing. Akai was already in his late teens, so its not like he will forget that info.
This genuinely annoyed me when they were revealed as sisters, like come on Goshyo!!! He literally made that up for no reason.
Even Amuro is a part of this. According to the timeline, Akai had infiltrated the organization 5 years ago (3 years he worked in the organization, got found out and came back 2 years later when Akemi was killed, i.e. current timeline) and as per the flashback, Amuro and Morofoshi were there as well. In that regard Amuro completely failed to protect Akemi. Was their literally no way he could provide safe passage to her?? Because even as a PSB he wanted to protect Haibara in the honor of Elena Miyano. Why was he not committed to protect Akemi as well, she is the elder daughter and someone he has even met?
Even the Akai Gin rivalry has taken the backseat. Akai wanted to investigate the BO because they were somehow related in the death of his father and over that he ended up having a personal vendetta against Gin because he killed Akemi!!! That was such a major crux of the story!!! The tension in the initial chapters is almost palpable when they face off. Akai even calls Gin his 'Lover' out of spite. Now we have two men (Akai and Amuro), who are on the same side, but are not being cooperative!!!
Another point to note is that Akai finds Ran similar to Akemi almost immediately. When he meets Ran in NY, his short temper towards her can be explained that way. He has been found out as a mole in the BO then deported back to US to investigate Vermouth, leaving behind the woman that he loves and her fate being completely uncertain. After working in the BO he most likely knows what her fate is going to be. Then after he comes back to Japan, it is after Akemi's death. Again he meets Ran and attributes Akemi's soft hearted nature with Ran's. He literally says, "You remind of a woman. A stupid woman who was always crying in the dark, while pretending to be casual."
One must truly love someone very deeply if they are reminded of their beloved by random strangers.
Also, it would be nice to see a little more of Akemi. For someone who has played such a massive role, like making Conan much more determined in uncovering BO, Haibara's cause of escape, Akai's determination to take them down, she appears too little.

On this note I would like to end it with a few notes for my Akai-Akemi fanfic-
They will not be blood relatives in my fanfics.
I may split the fanfics, in two versions. One where Akemi lives and the other which follows the original plot, where she has been killed.

Ah yes, Conan, Shuichi, and his baby brother who purposely walked into a serial killer house thinking he can just sweet talk a whole criminal into turning themselves in with his "i can fix him" strategy, thus sending the big brother into a weird rescue mission from a self-made, absolutely preventable hostage situation.
I dont want nobody telling me that Shukichi is the sane one in the Akai family okay bc who the fuck does this
