Strengthening Fleet Modernization Efforts

Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has unveiled its latest order of 100 Airbus aircraft, comprising 10 A350 widebody and 90 A320 Family single-aisle planes. This order adds to the 250 Airbus aircraft previously purchased in 2023, bringing the airline’s total Airbus orderbook to 344. Air India’s fleet modernization strategy aims to meet the demands of India’s rapidly growing aviation market. Six A350-900s have already been delivered, and the airline’s first A350 operations began in January 2024, marking the entry of this advanced widebody aircraft into India.

The decision to expand the fleet aligns with Air India’s “Vihaan.AI” transformation plan. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, emphasized the potential for growth, stating, “India’s improving infrastructure, aspirational youth, and global connectivity demands provide a clear case for expanding Air India’s fleet beyond the 470 aircraft ordered last year.” Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the alignment with Tata’s vision for Air India’s growth.

Innovative Aircraft for Modern Aviation Needs

The newly ordered Airbus A350 and A320neo Family aircraft are designed to improve operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. The A350, a leader in the widebody segment, boasts a 25% reduction in fuel consumption, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions compared to older models. With a range of up to 9,700 nautical miles, the A350 can handle ultra-long-haul routes while offering superior passenger comfort.

Complementing the widebody addition is the A321neo, part of the A320neo Family, which offers over 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous single-aisle aircraft. Featuring innovative Sharklet technology and advanced engines, the A321neo is tailored to maximize performance and range. Its spacious cabin design also ensures a comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Enhanced Maintenance Services for Fleet Optimization

To support its expanding fleet, Air India has signed a Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) contract with Airbus. This agreement guarantees high levels of aircraft availability and operational cost savings through integrated component services. The package includes on-site stock at Delhi, access to Airbus’ regional spares pools, and repair and engineering services for replaceable parts.

FHS-C reflects Airbus’ commitment to reliability, with the company being the leading provider of A350 power-by-the-hour maintenance services globally. For Air India, this partnership ensures optimized fleet performance as the airline scales its operations in domestic and international markets.
