As a reward for her good behavior, Andy allowed Y/N an extra half hour to watch television and she chose to watch her favorite cartoon — Higglytown Heroes. “Poor kitty!” She gasped out as the kitten was stuck on a tree. The lawyer was seated on the couch beside her with his hand rubbing her back as he quietly read a case file, “Kip is stuck now too!” Silently chuckling at her blow by blow report of the events of the cartoon he proceeded to read until he was summoned, “Dada, what will happen now?” Her eyes displayed worry and curiosity so he set the folder on the side table before making a guess, “Maybe they’ll ask someone from help? Let’s watch it, little missy.”

A few moments later, the characters were singing a song to reveal that they would be asking help from the firefighters. “You see that, missy? Who rides a big red vehicle with sirens?” His question got her racking her brain for a bit before answering, “Is it from the firefighters, dada?” Smiling widely as he pecked her cheek, he praised her, “Such a smart girl!” Her giggles indicated she loved the praise he was giving her, “The firefighters are the heroes because they help others.” Pondering on what he said, she stared at his bearded face with her lips pursed with a deep stare. “What are you thinking about, missy?” It was unusual for her to be this silent and serious when she was deep in little space, so it was slightly concerning. “Heroes help people; right, dada?” Andy nodded as he revisited the cartoon, “Mhm, just how the firefighters helped Kip and the kittens.” Holding his hand, she played with it as she concluded, “So does that make dada a hero too?” With a mouth hung agape, no words left the lawyer’s mouth as he was dumbfounded as his girl continued her explanation, “You help people and protect them right?” Planting a kiss on his bearded cheek, he smiled as her words of, “You’re my favorite hero, dada,” Melted his heart in the best way possible.

“Little one, what do you want to do today?” Hearing August’s deep voice tore her attentive eyes away from the television screen as she smiled sweetly at him, “Can we bake that cake, daddy?” Following where her finger pointed to where Mr. Bean was currently slicing a piece of the chocolate cake. Sitting down adjacent to where his beloved was sitting on the floor, he tried to convince her from doing something else, “Perhaps you’d rather go to the park? Or even color?” Crossing her arms as she let out a huff — an indication that her mind was set on imitating the animation meal, “But daddy I want to try the cake! It looks so yummy and I want to taste it!” Comparing her attitude to the previous times she whined about wanting something, she was relatively tame — so it ultimately convinced him that there was no harm in complying with what she wanted. “Okay, we’ll bake the cake,” She clapped her hands, excited at the thought of getting to taste the pastry; but her glee was halted as the CIA agent raised a brow at her, “But you have to wait a little while okay? Daddy still needs to find a recipe for the cake and see if we have the right ingredients; can you be a good girl in the meantime?” Nodding her head up and down, she proceeded to clasp her hands together on her lap as she returned to silently watching the cartoon. Draping an arm over her shoulders, his other hand fished out for the phone on his pocket and searched for the recipe; and he did find one after a few minutes.

With a kiss on her shoulder, he then excused himself to the kitchen to check if they have all the required ingredients; and when they did have everything it was then he called for her, “Turn off the television, little one. I found a recipe and we can bake that chocolate cake!” Never in their entire relationship had he seen her comply instantaneously and with a smile on her face. Standing beside him he smirked as he placed the cute apron he got her, “Are you ready to be a good baker, little one?” Jumping on her feet she nodded as she exclaimed, “I am, daddy! Can’t wait to feed you what we baked,” To show her appreciation of him going along with what she wants, she stood on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on his scruffy cheek, “Thank you so much, daddy. I love you.”

“Tătic, what color do you like most — pink, blue, or green?” She asked the former Winter Soldier without diverting her gaze from the piece of paper she was drawing on; the man in question however stopped reading the newspaper he was reading as he peered up. “I like the color blue the most, sweetheart; why’d you ask?” Continuing with her drawing, she just mumbled a soft, “Nothing,” And there was really nothing alarming about her behavior so he shrugged it off and continued to read about current events. After a few silent minutes, Y/N asked him again, “Would you rather be an owl, a cat, or a chameleon?” Bucky was able to connect some of the dots — the three colors and animals she mentioned was reminiscent of her favorite cartoon, “Why are you asking me about PJ Masks, sweetie?” Having been caught, she removed her focus from her drawing to look up from where he was sitting on the couch while she was sitting cross-legged at the floor. “I’m drawing something for you, tătic. Please don’t take a peek yet.”

She so sweetly requested it from him that he had just nodded and answered, “I’d rather be a chameleon, sweetie,” Before reading through the text again. Folding the newspaper and placing it by the side table; deciding that he needed to scratch an itch, he quietly lowered himself to sit on the floor. Once doing so, he inched closer to his left so he could try to sneak a peek at what Y/N was drawing; but it was as if spending so much time with the super soldier she gained spy skills, she sensed what he was trying to do and was quick to call him out on it, “Tătic, stop peeking!” Wrapping both his arms on her waist as he rubbed his forehead against her arm as he dramatically sighed, “But sweetheart I wanna see what you’re drawing.” Matching his sigh with a dramatic one of her own, she then pushed his face away and grabbed her drawing pad. “Okay here it is, tătic,” She showed him a suit she was sketching for him, it was blue and she tried to replicate Gecko’s scale in the suit but it proved too difficult to do so. “Wanted to design a new suit for you, tătic; you know just like in PJ Masks.” Unable to let out an audible coo, Bucky hugged Y/N in his arms as he planted kisses on the top of her head, “I love it so much, sweetheart. I love you so much.”

“What are you doing to my hair, doll?” Steve wondered as she was sitting on his lap, with her tongue slightly poking out of her cheeks as her hands were ruffling through his hair in her efforts to style him. “Just fixing your hair, sir.” Her answer just confused the retired Avenger even more as he just brushed his hair earlier; but apparently it wasn’t good enough for her. She was arranging the strands of his hair so they’d stand up instead of his usual look. “Only a little bit more and you’ll look like Ryder.” At the mention of that name, Steve was slightly concerned that he had a rival for his lover’s affection, “Who’s Ryder, baby doll?” Feeling giddy with the nickname she was called, she failed to focus on how he asked the question venomously. “The team leader of PAW Patrol, sir.” He let out a relieved sigh as relaxed visibly as he allowed her to rummage through his golden locks.

“Why do you want to style me like Ryder?” Halting her movements through his hair, she grinned widely upon seeing that his hair now looked like the cartoon character’s. “Because you’re so much like him, sir. You’re both leaders and love dogs too!” The last part peaked his attention as she seemed extra giddy at the mention of dogs, “Is this your way of telling me you want a dog too?” Placing her head against his chest, she nodded as she shyly mumbled, “Yes, sir.” His fingertips grazed the skin of her shoulders, “Then are you gonna name ‘em after the dogs in PAW Patrol?” The suggestion had her enthusiastically nodding against his chest, “I’d love that so much, sir!” Hugging her frame flush against him, Steve then decided to play along with her, “Maybe someday, when you prove to be responsible enough; if I’m Ryder, who are you then?” Removing her face from his chest she beamed, “The Princess of Barkingburg! Which means you need to comply with my orders of us getting a dog!”

“Aika, come here, doggy!” Upon hearing her name called, the German Shepherd plopped herself down beside the girl who was currently watching cartoons as she was watching her favorite cartoon as she waited for Sy. Stroking her brown fur she looked at the dog who was staring at her with curious eyes, “Do you like the color red, Aika?” As the dog laid her head down on her thigh, the little girl took it as a no. “Why not? Clifford likes the cower red,” She pointed to the huge dog who was licking Emily as she was brushing his fur. “Maybe Captain will let me put red color on you,” She then began to brush her own nimble fingers against the brown and black fur of the dog as she imagined what it would look like with the color red instead.

“I’m home, baby girl!” Sy announced as he closed the front door behind him. Her head turned to his appearing figure with a wide smile as she waved enthusiastically, “Captain! I had a bright idea.” Having his curiosity piqued, he told her to remain seated on the couch as he placed some of the groceries he bought on the kitchen island and sat beside her. Not even more than a second after he sat down, she immediately perched herself on his lap, calling for Aika as well to scooch closer to the both of them. “What are you up to, baby?” Bopping her nose with his finger and she playfully chased his finger to bite it; pointing to the television where Clifford the Big Red Dog was still playing, “Clifford is red, right?” Not knowing where she was going with this, he just nodded and looked at her with curious eyes as she pointed to their dog who was laying on her crossed paws, “Can we please color Aika red? Please?” Chuckling at her suggestion, the former soldier could only shake his head, “No we can’t color her red, babygirl.” At the sound of the rejection of her idea, Y/N pouted in hopes to persuade him to change his mind, “But you colored her green!” Sighing, he held her hands as he explained, “Captain only colored her green so she wouldn’t be taken away.” With a huff she crossed her arms as she continued to whine, “I want a red dog.” Coming up with a bright idea, Sy then offered, “How about I buy you a Clifford stuffie? That way you’ll have your own red dog.” Almost immediately her pout left her mouth as her eyes shined at the thought of having one and she wrapped her arms around his neck as she excitedly squealed, “Yes please, Captain! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“What’s going on, papa?” Y/N wondered as she found Lance perched down on the floor as he was tinkling with his laptop; she awoke from her nap and instead of having the gold medalist wake her up it was the faint groans and curses he let out that woke her up. Looking up from where he was trying to get the device to work, he put on a smile upon seeing his girl, “I can’t get the laptop to turn on, angel.” He was only slightly alarmed when she jumped and down, “Oh let me help, papa! Hold on, let me get my tools!” He could barely process anything she said as she was quick to leave him on the floor.

Dismissing her behavior, he turned his attention back to his laptop and stared at it as if his gaze would get it back to work. “Handy Y/N at your service! You break it, I fix it!” She said the cartoon character’s famous catchphrase, she held onto her own version of the toolbox he got her as a surprise. Smiling, Lance patted the spot beside him as he called her for help, “Hello handy Y/N! Can you please help me fix my laptop?” With a slight pout, she pretended to inspect the device for a little bit before grabbing Felipe, the yellow screwdriver that seemed to be her favorite character, and pretended to screw around the device. As she turned to place the tool box on its container and was rummaging through her tools, the gymnast sneakily pushed the power button and by some miracle it did turn on, “Look at that, angel! You fixed my laptop!” She jumped a bit at the sound of his voice but smiled widely upon seeing the screen light up, “I guess Handy Manny really teaches you how to fix things huh, angel?” Nodding her head she smiled brightly as she grabbed her toolbox and struck a pose, “It did, papa! And now I can always fix something up for you; you only have to pay me with kissies and cuddles!”

“King, can I pick what we’re both going to wear?” Ransom looked up at the girl who laid beside him, they both woke up a few minutes ago and they were just cuddling in bed as they traced shapes into each other’s skin; usually she would ask if she could dress herself, never him as well. Seeing how she hasn’t had the chance to slip into her comfort space usually — thanks to her demanding priorities — he didn’t see any harm in letting her do so; after all, he wanted her to enjoy her Christmas break. With a sweet kiss to her forehead he allowed it, “Okay princess, you can choose what we both wear. But why stop there? Choose what you want us to do this morning too.” Her eyes lit up with excitement at what he said as she stood up from the bed, leaving the former playboy to whine about missing her warmth, and search through their shared walk-in closet about the clothing articles she was looking for. Returning with their matching cable knit sweaters and a pair of plaid pajamas that had a king and queen symbol sewn on it. With a raised brow, Ransom silently wondered if she was planning this for a while and her excited squeal of, “Wear this one please, king — this way we’re like B1 and B2!”

“So that’s why you wanted us to match huh?” He concluded out loud as he sat up on the edge of the bed so he could reach for her to tickled her sides; in between her fit of giggles, Y/N managed to confirm it, “Mhm, I wanted to be like them. And this is my way too of making up for not spending so much time with my king.” Displeased with the whiff of sadness at her statement; grabbing for both of her hands, he held it against his as he rubbed soothing circles on it, “Princess, I completely understand that you were buried in your workload, okay? I’m so proud that you got to accomplish everything right away,” He paused his little speech to plant kisses on the back of both her palms before inquiring, “So have you decided what we’re going to do?” Nodding her head yes she shared what her ideal morning would look like, “Maybe you can make my favorite breakfast, king? Then watch ``Bananas in Pyjamas together?” Ransom could feel his heart flutter with how simple she was — which was a stark contrast to how the people that surrounded him for all his life was extremely materialistic — that all she wanted was to be with him for that would make her happy. Grabbing the clothes she had picked out in one hand as the other hand was dragging his princess on the other to guide them to the bathroom to change he jokingly scolded her, “Then what are we waiting for? We can’t let B1 and B2 waiting for us for too long!”

“I understand we have a holiday break, but I just wanted to go over the contents of the report one more time,” Will tiredly explained as he was having his final video conference before his holiday break. Y/N was currently watching Twirlywoos in the living room. Redirecting her gaze from the television screen to her bubba who was stressed out and she wanted to help him relax — but knew that one way of doing so is by not bothering him right now as he worked. “Okay, see you all again on January 3rd,” Was the last thing Will said before ending the call and groaning out loud as he rubbed his hands on his eyes, “Bubba, are you okay?” Hearing her concerned and small voice snapped him out of his distress; he was then quick to put up a smile on his lips as he left his home office that was adjacent to the living room and sat beside her on the couch. “I am now, munchkin. Bubba doesn’t have to work for two weeks and you have him all to yourself.” With that Y/N smiled brightly as well and kissed all over his face, “Okay calm down, munchkin,” He laughed feeling ticklish with all her kisses, “How about a snack?” Nodding her head, she accepted the help he offered her to stand from the floor, “Yes please, bubba.”

Grabbing her hand he led her to the sit on one of the chairs on the breakfast bar, and just as Will was about to head to the pantry to grab some snacks he remembered, “Oh hold on, I just need to fix my things before fixing you a snack, okay?” The business consultant expected that his girl would be disappointed but she was the opposite, “Can I help you with that, bubba?” He had to take a double look at her as he wondered out loud, “Are you sure you want to help? And I don’t think you know exactly how to do so, munchkin.” She pouted when he doubted her capabilities, “I do! I learned from the Twirlywoos,” She pointed to the cartoons playing on the background — the family of four were now carelessly shoving all the beach items inside the tent — and since this was her favorite show, she’d watch this particular episode multiple times and picked up quite a few things. Will wrapped an arm around Y/N’s waist to lead her into his home office, “Very well, my Chickadee munchkin, show me what you learned from the show.”

Lyna

1. when designed her i was very into norse and celtic mythology. I blame marvel and thor for it. So i looked for HOURS on google, insta and other sites for dresses as a reference. I also read a lot about some Symbols and tried to get those into the design of her dress.

2. Her original name was Loona, she was once a snowhite fox/wolf sonic oc but now she evolved and i really like her design a lot. Plus she is one of my alltime favs.

Hitomi

1. after my buddy lumi created ichirou and jurou i had the MASSIVE urge to try to make a spiderkid too. Though with the rules she set i felt i bit uncomfortable so Hitomi is a different type of spider creature.

2. Komi-san from Komi-san can’t communicate was a huge inspiration for her. Hitomi often does the classic Komi-round eyes lol

1. That dude is a very old Oc of mine and he has gone through many many make-overs. But one thing remained; he is a grump

1. my crazy chimera bean. She is a wildcard and pretty much a child. But don’t take her lightly. She can beat full grown man up.

2. her name means sheep, which is funny because she is not very sheep like anymore. But still a cute name.

Aika

1. Aika is a newer Oc of mine and she is actually part of the Kimetsu no yaiba universe. I created her together with another friend for a fan fiction she wanted to write about Tengen and his 4th wife. She is his childhood friend and first love. She taught Tengen and the girls how normal people live and just some basic non ninja stuff. She and Tengen also have a daughter named Shion. Buuuuut my friend didn’t like her nor the story and went with an over powered rare breathing style slayer.

2. oh yeah never posted a pic of her huh? Well i can show you a concept picture as fact 2! I think i also have a sketch of shion. Shion looks like her mom but has Tengens hair and eyecolor.

Voice Actress Carnelian - Aika Kobayashi Interview

The moment we finish shooting, Aika Kobayashi beams at the staff and exclaims “that was so much fun!” She continues, “of course I’m glad to be on the cover of this magazine, but what made me even happier was that I got to try on so many outfits” - it’s clear that she’s a fashion-lover through and through.

I knew I had to wear that red off-shoulder outfit. The colour is just beautiful and the black and white dotted dress has this retro feel about it. I love it! But what I want people to notice the most is the shoes. They piqued my interest during the fitting session and I wanted them so badly that I bought them (laughs). Getting to wear cute shoes all the time is enough to get me hyped! The hat from the second outfit is so adorable too. There are eyes on my forehead! (laughs) There’s also this netting on the hat, which I think gives it an autumn-y feel. I have to say that the third outfit was very dressy. I hardly get a chance to wear clothes like those either for work or in my personal time, so it was a fresh experience for me. It has a girly vibe to it, but if you look closely, it has this playful American comic pattern on it. The gap between those aspects makes it so fascinating.

“Once I get started talking about fashion, I can’t stop”, she giggles. But it’s all too clear that there’s no falsehood in her words. As she picks out outfits for the shoot with her stylist, Kobayashi is asked what her trick is for choosing clothes. She answers simply: “intuition!”

Previously, I was really concerned about the price of clothes, so I stuck to the method of buying cheap and cute clothes at places like outlet malls. Nowadays, though, I don’t have much time to shop so I’ll buy the pieces I find that happen to speak to me: only the ones that I fall in love with at first sight. If I hesitate even slightly, I won’t buy it…. Or so I say, but end up telling myself that this is fate and just buy it anyway. (laughs dryly) Of course, some of them end up being misses, but depending on how I coordinate them with other clothes and accessories, I can try for a new look, or there are cases where my tastes change over time, so I don’t think that any of my purchases go to waste.

Fashion plays an integral part in Kobayashi’s life. Tracing her passion for fashion back in time, she reveals “I’ve been fascinated by it for as long as I can remember.”

I was the sort of kid who would mess around painting her nails. Sometimes I would sneakily put on my mother’s lipstick when she wasn’t looking. After that, I’d show it off to her shouting “Look at me! Look at me!” so it ended up not being sneaky at all (laughs). In elementary school, I loved inviting a bunch of friends to my house and putting on a fashion show: we would have so much fun dressing each other up. It was around that time I started to be so picky about fashion that I would pick my own clothes when I went shopping with my family. I would throw a bit of a tantrum every time I was forced to try on clothes my mother had bought that I didn’t fancy.

Naturally, her dream as a child was to be a designer or model… or perhaps something more?

Of course I did have those aspirations. But I also loved to sing and dance, so I also dreamed of being a singer. I enjoyed taking care of little children too, and was always the one looking after the younger kids around me ever since my kindergarten days. I hoped that one of those dreams would come true.

Kobayashi’s philosophy is to “have as many dreams as you can”. This has allowed her to always have multiple aspirations and come to terms with each of them.

I wanted to learn more about children, so I went to a technical college and earned my qualification as a kindergarten teacher. Even now, I hope to work with children sometime in some form or another. In terms of fashion, I’ve been given chances like this to wear so many different outfits, so I’m just overjoyed that I was able to make that dream come true.

As for song and dance, one needs look no further than her current work. This raises the question: what made her interested in song and dance in the first place?

I love Namie Amuro, who was one of my biggest influences as a child. I’d imitate her singing and choreography. Seeing me do that prompted my mother to put me through voice training and dance school. I learned dance for the first time at five years old: I still remember how to do the dance we performed at our recital and the basic techniques. Later, I started learning hip-hop dance when I was in third grade. I would have a blast singing and dancing with the friends I met there. I continued to attend dance classes in middle school. Looking back on it, that was when I danced the most. And seeing my friends get better than me ignited this burning rivalry inside me, which spurred me on to give my all. It was a place where people who shared the same dream could gather and encourage each other to improve. That’s why I didn’t give up half way through. I really count myself as blessed.

When asked about her personality as a child, she smiles wryly and answers “I couldn’t stand losing…” That hasn’t changed to this very day. But, her dislike of losing is what has enabled her to realise her dreams.

Definitely. I wanted to have my cake and eat it too, if I could! (laughs) To phrase it in the negative, there was never a time when I’d shrink back and think “this is impossible.” In elementary school, there were times in class where we’d write about our dreams for the future. I used to dream so big that I’d be embarrassed of what I wrote down. My friends would all write something down to earth, so I felt like I was the only one with my head in the clouds (laughs). Sure, becoming a singer or dancer was a realistic dream to me, but there was one time I wrote down something different. That was the one time I took my eyes off reality. At all other times, I’ve had a strong belief that I should never give up on my dreams.

Her ambition bore fruit and Kobayashi fulfilled her dream, debuting as a singer during her high school years. It was thanks to her meeting with the CEO of her current agency.

He approached me at a competition that I entered during middle school. That led to me making my debut as an artist. I was over the moon. My family was so happy for me too. I couldn’t stop thinking about how one of my dreams had come true. During my first recording, I felt more enjoyment than pressure. I’ve never felt very nervous when it comes to singing, and that time, I was completely fearless. (laughs) I think the recording staff tried to be considerate of me and let me do my own thing, but that day I just emptied my mind and sang. Now, having experienced so much as an adult means that the experience is a good deal more frightening than it used to be. It’s kind of unfair to the people around you when you’re the only one who knows nothing! (laughs)

There was another source of joy for Kobayashi upon making her debut as an artist: being able to receive feedback directly from her fans.

The 2011 Touhoku earthquake and tsunami happened not long after I made my debut. That was when I received tweets from people saying that listening to my song gave them courage. I felt like having someone say that to me was the reason I’d gone through all that effort. Of course, there was also the joy that I felt from experiencing my first recording and seeing my CD on store shelves and thinking “I’ve really made it.” Those things are all well and good, but I never had the opportunity to hear what people thought of my singing: it was just a one way street. So reading those tweets was the first time I realised that my singing was able to encourage someone. The happiness of knowing that left a lasting impression on me, so even now, I take care to read the letters I receive from my fans.

While continuing her work as a singer, Kobayashi encountered another unexpected turning point: that was beginning her journey as a voice actress.

The CEO of my agency recommended that I give it a try, but I was reluctant at first. I did watch a lot of anime but I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about it. I also didn’t have any acting experience and wasn’t confident in my voice. That was why I turned down the opportunity a number of times at first. But one day, I experienced a shift in my mindset that made me think that I should give it a try. Although I was still singing, I hadn’t made any major breakthroughs, which caused me to go through a lot of anxiety at the time. At the root of it was this hunger for an opportunity to change myself. In the midst of that, I took the audition which ended up giving me the role of Yoshiko Tsushima. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that I’d scored a role in Love Live! Sunshine!!, a franchise that I loved so much.

It so happened that her time as a voice actress would be full of surprises.

Firstly, it felt odd to me to be in the world of anime. I’d been involved with anime in other ways, like singing an ending theme for a series, but I didn’t think the day would come when I would be playing a role in an anime. (laughs) There was a moment when I felt all of the possibilities in my life open up before me and I thought to myself “I didn’t know I could be involved with an anime like this.” (laughs) In that sense, I do hope that my experiences will be a source of courage for people out there who are thinking of pursuing something new. And, well, since I’ve started to receive letters from my fans, I’ve found that many of them are requests for advice along the lines of “I’m not sure if it’s OK to follow my dreams now that I’ve started my career.” My personal opinion is that it’s definitely never too late to start something new. I mean, I am where I am now because I had the unexpected opportunity to pursue voice acting. What’s most important is not time or experience, but how badly you want to follow your dreams. That’s the message that I want to send.

Of course, not everything went smoothly for her.

Acting and singing are the same in the sense that you use both to express something. But, when you consider the technical aspects and all, acting really is a completely different beast. Tweaking the tiniest nuance can change the personality of the character you play. For example, there are times where you might try to add some individuality to your character by giving her an accent, but you overthink things so that everything she says ends up sounding the same. You learn something new every time. Watching anime or dubbed movies, I’ve never felt that the voice acting was unnatural, but I suppose that’s testament to how naturally professional voice actors and actresses can perform. When it came time for me to be the one doing the acting, I found out what a difficult and amazing feat it is.

Kobayashi says that “now, I prioritise feeling more than technique in my acting.”

When you try to get into your character’s head and empathise with their feelings, there are things you can learn about the way they think.

We learn that she has always had an active imagination.

I have a habit of letting my imagination go wild. (laughs) I like to imagine how particular characters would sound like when they laugh, or how they would express themselves if they were angry. I started to notice that if I can imagine that, my voice will change naturally. At first, I only paid attention to the vocal aspect of voice acting work: I would record myself acting and listen to the recording, reflecting on what I did well and what I did poorly. But nowadays, once I get a script I'll read it and let my imagination go wild. I'll make a bunch of notes in the script about the characters' emotions, or write comments like "my character is sweating bullets in this scene". (laughs) I'll tend to do that even when I read the manga or novel. The characters will keep on acting out their lines inside my head - and all in my voice. (laughs) As I read, I'll ponder on the meaning of the illustration pages in novels or the individual panels of manga, so it takes me ages to get through it. (laughs)

Kobayashi never imagined that she would be a voice actress, but she says that it's now among the most enjoyable work she's done. She exudes that enthusiasm through every sentence she speaks, explaining the joy of acting.

All of my roles are very stimulating for me. I mean, it's fantastic that I get to become someone or something other than myself just by using my voice. I could change my appearance or age, my gender, or I could even become something other than a human being. Every time I act I get to step into someone else's shoes for a while and because of that, I've learned to see things from a variety of perspectives. My own life has been pretty packed with experiences up until this point, and to think that I could get to experience even more makes me excited at the prospect of what the future holds. (laughs) Also, it's not like I'm in the business of making anime by myself: it's a collaborative work with my fellow cast members and staff. That makes it so much fun. Before, I used to feel pressured not to be a burden on the people around me, but one day a sound director gave me this advice: "voice acting is something that you neither learn nor study: you just have to experience it." Since then, I've made it a point to absorb all sorts of things from the people around me. Even so, I've still only just begun. For me right now, the words that make me the happiest are when the sound director says "alright, that's a wrap!" (laughs) I'll do my best to get the director's approval in as few takes as possible.

This year marks three years since Aika Kobayashi debuted as a voice actress. It is still only September, but we took an early look back on what kind of year 2018 was for her.

Every month, week and day felt so long, yet it's all gone by so quickly. It's weird. I have no idea what happened. (laughs) I've never felt like this before. But, what I can say for sure is that it's been fulfilling. I think the most fitting word to describe the way time went by is "youth". When I'm with my friends and workmates, I laugh so loudly that it makes me wonder if the people around me think I'm a nuisance. But at the same time, I also feel like that’s what being young is all about. (laughs) I think in essence, it’s about having a lot to learn, a lot of things to absorb and experience for the first time and taking on the challenge with everything you’ve got. Lately, I have a lot of fun even just sleeping! (laughs)

Amusing… but what does that mean?

For example, five years ago I used to feel a sense of impatience about so many different things when I went to bed, but now I can go to sleep with a sense of confidence. Every day is so jam packed and fulfilling and sleep is there for me to recover from the tiredness built up from that day. That makes me so happy.

It’s been a busy 2018 for Kobayashi indeed. But among the busyness, one of her long held dreams came true: working in fashion.

I produced my own parka and was able to get it manufactured. I was of course happy that they made it the way I wanted, but I know there were also a lot of people who were looking forward to wearing it, and I’m sure that it brings joy to a lot of people when they wear it now. It allowed me to experience the emotions that creators feel in a new way. The ways that I approach singing, dancing, acting and designing clothes are all different, but you can see a certain Aika Kobayashi-ness in all of them. It made me happy that I was able to give that to people.

It’s still some ways off, but we ask her about her resolutions for 2019…

I’ll be 25! Wow. Just, wow. The way I used to imagine life at 25 is so different to how my life looks now – I’m at a loss for words. (laughs) I mean I thought I would have settled down, gotten married and maybe even had a child. I never thought I’d be laughing so loudly with friends and thinking to myself “this is what youth is like!” (laughs dryly) When I said “wow” earlier, I didn’t mean it in a negative way: I don’t think that this kind of life as a 25 year old is bad at all. When people get older, I feel like they start to step on the brakes a little: they’ll give up on things and taking a new step forward becomes that much harder. But I want to keep taking on new challenges no matter how old I get. In that sense, I suppose I am still a little bit childish.

When asked about her ambitions outside of voice acting, Kobayashi answers that she’d like to start a fashion brand.

I want to start a brand that caters to a variety of fashion styles: not just parkas. I’m studying design bit by bit in order to achieve that. I’ll do things like researching how to use colour, or taking down notes immediately when I find something cute. I think that I might even want to try making clothes myself, not just designing them. But I’m not too handy so I think I might actually pass on that. (laughs dryly) Before I made a puppet to be the mascot for my Nico Nico Douga livestream (Aika Kobayashi’s Open Rehearsal) – I’m good at making little things like that. But clothes tend to come out a little bit rough around the edges, so I leave that to someone who’s an expert in sewing. (laughs)

Kobayashi is making her dreams come true, while still setting new goals and progressing towards them as well. This resonates with her words from the beginning of this interview: “have as many dreams as you can.”

I have a lot of small dreams. As I fulfil those bit by bit, the bigger dreams change. So I think it’s a never-ending process. But making even the small dreams come true is a confidence booster. I feel that always having that confidence will lead to a positive life.

We can’t help but be interested in the life she’ll be living after she turns 25.

I don’t think I’ll be any different! (laughs) I’ll probably find some new dreams and take them on as well. It’d be awesome if I could say to myself “I’ve never felt younger in my life!”

Im curious as to why you hate Makoto for ripping of p3pfemc's looks but consent to Royal-chan for the same thing? ( I know you hate Makoto for a lot of other reasons, like her personality and such, but it seemed like you disliked her since prereveal/release?) If Royal chan ended up being a completely unrelated character to femc, will your opinion of her change ? (no hate really, i jst wanna know. \V/m )

It's no prob! In all honesty I didn't even think about this kind of question, but the answer came right away, so I guess time for a not so deep reflection.

So like full stop, if Poniko isn't connected to the FeMC and it's just Atlus messing with me, yeah I'mma be PISSED. Will I rip on her looks like no tomorrow? Maybe, depends on how it’s handled (like how bad they burn me, and even then I might wait for a spinoff cause they might go into the connection there rather than Royal). I think it's obvious I went harder on Makoto because I don't like her for other reasons, and so any small thing about her annoys me (tbh Yusuke's design annoys me too, but not as bad cause....I kinda just don’t care about him and who he’s copying as much, but I'll get to that in a bit)

Anyway I think we need some historical context, because I think it’s important. When Makoto (and Yusuke) where first shown......FeMC had been ignored for A LONG time. We had a non-canon play (which no one really talked about), and that was it. No game related stuff, not even featured in the game where people were getting ripped out of timelines. FeMC were BURNED. I’ll be honest, when Yusuke appeared......While the parallels between P2 were obvious (not just with him) he reminded me of Minato as well. It annoyed me we had to have the token blue hair character since the rule had been made since the P3 era (kinda enforced with some black haired characters from P1/2, combining P2 games together that is, if you want to include them), Atlus said they’d be trying new things..... but like....whateves. But my association with him as Minato increased....when Makoto came along.

Ngl I wasn’t pleased with the reveal of the last three girls (even didn’t like Haru, for ironically now what I love as an alt rewrite for her as, as I thought she’d be a mean and person full of herself due to calling herself ‘beauty thief’....Yeah all types of crazy here, I do love sweet Haru tho. And the reason for my opinion changing on the alt non-canon personality rewrite is just I.....see the appeal in it for the group dynamic now, while at the time I was afraid of disliking any of the characters or having them be disliked by the fandom.....which big laugh now haha :’D .....I want my happy P5 self back ;w;). Anyway back to the three girls, ngl one of the reasons I wasn’t happy was how they just dumped 3 more characters on us (too big a cast so can they handle it?, silly has to do more VA videos, I want the smaller cast back oh god don’t screw this up, and so on and so on). As for the characters, while Haru’s appearance in the trailer mislead me on her personality (for whatever reason)..... I just.....there was something about Futaba and Makoto I didn’t like. Futaba just rubs me all the wrong ways for reasons I can’t describe for back then (maybe the fact she looked like she’d be a troll and she kinda is), but Makoto it was clear...... She was ripping off FeMC’s look. The brown hair and red eyes.....the fact that Yusuke looked like Minato.....it felt like they were trying to draw them as expies of the P3MCs. And it pissed me off. I didn’t want an unrelated character look and remind me of the FeMC, I wanted FeMC herself! Why are you stealing her look????? And while some FeMC saw this and rolled with it as a joke (Hamu/Minty/Shin dressing up as Makoto/Yusuke/Goro to get into P5), other’s didn’t know who the FeMC was and thus.....didn’t see the blatant expy/rip off design. Seeing people be like “her character design is so original and cute and blah blah blah”.....it annoyed me....obviously (it didn’t help she grew in popularity doing absolutely nothing too, so initially it was all about her looks, and then I’ve been told a lot of her fans, at least male, has been mostly them saying the like her design and her hair and her eyes, and no everyone who likes Makoto is an FeMC fan so....yeah.....I mostly hear how it’s just about her design so I’m very focused on that in regards to her specifically BECAUSE of the fans). And yeah I know it was a bit petty/shallow reason, but I didn’t outright hate her atm, she was stepping on my toes badly but I was holding out till the game (where it finally cemented my hate for her, and now I legit hate her for petty, shallow, deep, and complex reasons). And lordy lord lord, it did not help Makoto’s name was Makoto, because that was a name some FeMC fans gave Hamuko (cause Makoto Yuki was the closest ‘canon’ name we’d get to P3MCs, and some people adopted it for both MCs cause it was gender neutral, so Niijima coming along and taking THAT away sucked ass, and I know different kanji, it still sucked tho). It just....felt like Atlus was spitting in FeMC fan’s face..... But anyway, I kept it in....for about....2ish years. Even when I was trying to stay positive.......and even when I was slowly starting to come out with negative opinions. I tried to keep it in.

Finally I decided to make it framed as a joke, because I started to see Makoto ripping off more characters than just FeMC (FeMC, Aika, and Naoto in the detective novel to be precise, but what got the ball rolling was realizing that it was Aika who Makoto ripped the hair and motor vehicle from with the FeMC’s color scheme). That’s where my brain started going other places than just being restricted to FeMC, and I started being more critical of Makoto’s design outside the FeMC (tho that still burned me). Because, imo, it’s not original, it annoyed me people would say she was original when she was really just a Frankenstein rip off of other characters (other loved characters, FeMC and Aika were pretty popular in their own right). It only continued to cement in my mind that....anything ‘original’ about Makoto was a farce, she just copies while the original gets left behind.

Tldr; FeMC had been snubbed for years, along comes two design expies that remind you of P3MCs (3 if you wanna include Goro/Ken but Goro looks different enough imo), Makoto is named Makoto (a name some used for FeMC), and Makoto is praised for her design for being original and blah blah blah when it’s not (for multiple reasons besides the FeMC, kinda more the fans reactions fault but I was already having design issues so it just bugged me more when they’d say these things). So yeah it felt like Makoto stole aspects of the FeMC, and it’s not like FeMC has a lot for herself, which really just stepped on my toes. Combined that with legit hating the character when I finally get to see her in action (and it’s because of her actions and writing that I hate-hate the character, but prior to that it was just her stepping on my toes while trying to keep an open mind into liking her), the stuff said before gets amplified more than before.

But months later, after the first post of me ripping on Makoto for taking FeMC and Aika’s design (tho my later posts were in drafts I just didn’t post them till later), something amazing happened on Aug 4th. FeMC finally came back to us. And holy shit obviously I was happy, but it doesn’t dismiss the fact I was aware of how much of design rip off/expy Makoto was, and it wasn’t just FeMC anymore. But gdi if the fact that the FeMC wasn’t being ignored anymore didn’t change the outlook for me as an FeMC fan. FeMC was back, she’s loved, care was put into her character in PQ2, just.....skdfalf;a so happy ;w; But also so hopeful, she was acknowledged again, she had been cut from the 20th anniversary event in official art, and that hurt us, but now she’s back back. And she was a main character in PQ2.....which leads to you questioning, what next?

Which brings us to Poniko, the one post hopeful outlook. Obviously she’s not starting in the same place as Makoto. Poniko has been revealed post-PQ2 FeMC....which means Atlus isn’t ignoring Hamuko (in fact a lot of the creators were stating they WANTED her back), we know the creators do love Hamuko. There’s also the fact.....Poniko looks less like an expy like Makoto (who imo looks like Soejima trying to emulate Kaneko’s art style, esp the eye shape, same with Yusuke too). Poniko? It goes beyond ripping off a design, she looks like she’s almost fully lifted from Hamuko, it just looks like Hamuko wearing a different outfit. Just straight up copy and paste. And would I have been pissed if she was revealed alongside Makoto? Maybe, or I might be theorizing that she is Hamuko herself like now (tho I think it’d get more push back due to Hamu being in Atlus’ basement for so long so it just being claimed as delusional and unlikely), or both (and then pissed when it’s revealed it’s not Hamuko). It’s just....she looks SO MUCH like Hamuko it can’t be a coincidence, and after PQ2 it feels less like one as well. Just.....the posture, the cinematic parallels, the hair color, the eye color, the eye shape, the eyelashes, the face structure, the way she stands.....Poniko just screams “I AM Hamuko” not “I just look like her because.” And it helps that other people in the fandom also see this too, some are hoping she’s a new person, but it seems people at least acknowledge that very obvious similarities between Hamuko and Poniko (while that didn’t really happen with P5 with Hamuko/Makoto).

And....tbh I feel like I might sound like I’m splitting hairs (at least with the words I’m using). And it might sound weird that I think Makoto ripped off enough Hamuko it pissed me off, but Poniko just.....is a copy and paste of Hamuko, just straight up Hamuko in a different outfit and hairstyle but it doesn’t. But it’s the historical context I think that sheds that light. And the fact Poniko might just BE Hamuko, and so it’d make sense if that was the case for them to look like each other (while it doesn’t make sense for Makoto to look like Poniko).

I guess it also helps that I personally had the headcanon Hamuko and Minato weren’t related (just strangers on the bridge in two separate cars), and they both survived the bridge accident but one became the leader of SEES and the other went on to live and do their own thing (until maybe a spinoff game pulls them back in). And while I.....well recalling it now I considered a reincarnation once in a hc scenario (opted for time travel forward cause that makes sense 8U I won’t go into it I had my reasons 8U), but looking at the 1st year symbol on Poniko (and reincarnation in other MegaTen works, I mean c’mon reincarnation is in the title) it feels plausible. And it works for Poniko because of the time the incident and the time to be reincarnated takes place (1999 being the accident and April 1 2000-April 2 2001 being the time frame she was born), which wouldn’t ever work for Makoto because she was born in 1998 (so even if I HAD considered Makoto it wouldn’t have worked, esp since they never tell us she jumped grades, it’s not possible....and while I’m all for hc and grey areas, this is something that WOULD be explicitly told because it’s not common in Japan and Atlus has been explicit about characters not in the ‘right’ grades before, just an fyi there 8U).

I dunno I feel like there’s distinct clear reasons that I can fit them into separate categories. And yeah if Poniko isn’t Hamuko I’mma be burned too, BUT I’mma wait till a spinoff post-Royal before I get pissy.....cause I don’t expect clear answers to other past games in another game’s mainline entry (I only expect shallow shoutouts tbh). So yeah, just so you know where the deadline for my expectations are.

30 Days of Domestic Fluff

23. Double Date

Aika and Briar had landed in Yumemi not too long ago. After requesting a ride they were quickly on the road. Their driver knew the city well and drove swiftly “So you’ve never been to Yumemi before?” Aika asked. “No I've never left New Athens to be honest,” Briar said with a bit of a chuckle. “I'll make sure we see more places but my home town is a good place to start,” Aika said with a smile. In little time they made it to their hotel. In front of the hotel a bellhop brought their light luggage to their room. A hired valet came to Aika and handed her a set of car keys. “Your car is in the private parking lot,” the valet said before running off. “You have a car in Yumemi?” Briar asked. “Yeah I also got a house here,” she replied. “Then why are we staying in this fancy hotel?” Briar said out loud as they walked towards the elevator. “I own a decent share in this hotel chain and I wanted to treat my girl to something special that's enough reason,” Aika said as she winked. “Miss money bags,” Briar said sarcastically.

Once in the hotel room Briar gawked at the size and design of the room. “God I used to work as housekeeping and I've never been in a room like this,” she joked as she threw herself on the bed. Aika sat down in a chair to rest. Her leg injury burdened her. She looked around the room then looked back to Briar. “It's okay haha,” she said. Briar rolled her eyes and stood up. “So I'm gonna hop in the shower,” she said as she took off her jacket and started throwing her clothes to a corner of the room. “I'll call my friend about the date,” Aika said as Briar opened the bathroom door. Briar turned around with a nod and blew Aika a kiss.

Aika dialed her good friend Hitomu. “Hey Hitomu,” she said over the phone. “Oh hey Aika. Hitomu can’t come to the phone right now, you could say he’s a bit occupied at the moment.” To Aika’s surprise, Musouka answered the phone as she seemed to be holding back laughter. “Oh uhm hey Musouka,” she replied. “It’s a surprise you’re calling. Are you in town? Hey if you need a place to stay, we just so happen to now have a free guest bedroom,” Musouka said in a playful tone until they heard another voice. “Musouka? Who is that? What are you saying? Give it here!” Musouka laughed and said goodbye to Aika before she passed the phone along. “Hello?” Hitomu’s voice finally came by. “Oh hey Hitomu sounds like you two are having fun,” Aika said. “O-Oh Aika, umm whatever she just said disregard it. She woke up in a less than mellow mood today,” Hitomu said in a weary tone. “You guys are sharing a bed together now huh?” she sneered. “What? Um I don’t know what you’re talking about, Aika,” he responded nervously. “So is she in your room or are you in her’s,” she asked. “I.. its.. ah, I moved into her room… Moved all my stuff over. Now we have a free space but I wouldn’t doubt she already explained that,” he said half-embarrassedly. “But anyway, I don’t suppose you’re calling just to check on me now are you?” He added. “Well you guys are sharing a bed, would you mind sharing a date with me and someone else, like a double date? I landed here in Yumemi I'm on some business but I figured we could have some fun and catch up too,” Aika explained. “Oh, that actually sounds good. I can't lie and say we haven’t been wondering about you. Let us know the time and place and we’ll be there,” Hitomu said. “Perfect I already reserved a table for us at nine. I'll text the rest of the details, ja ne,” Aika said. “Heh, mata ne Aika,” Hitomu said before hanging up. Aika got up and started getting her clothes she was going to wear ready. She walked over to the bathroom door. “Hey I'm hopping in the shower with you,” Aika joked. “Hold your horses you gotta get me a ring first,” Briar replied. Aika chuckled then sat back down scrolling through her phone as she waited her turn.

Soon enough the two girls were both showered and dressed. Aika spinned around in her new purple dress. “Nice dress,” Briar said with a smile. “You picked it out,” Aika responded. Briar was wearing a wine red dress. “And I'm liking your dress. I think it's my first time seeing you in one,” Aika said to her. “Please I’m not really a dress kinda girl but you spent so much money on this thing I gotta wear it at least once,” Briar said as she lightly blushed. Aika smiled. “You may not be a dress kind of girl but you look sexy as hell right now,” Aika said as she grabbed the car keys and threw them to Briar. “Let's get going la flame,” Aika added as she stepped out the door holding her cane.

Meanwhile, as Hitomu had hung up the phone, Musouka had just gotten out of the bathroom. “So what happened?” She asked. “She invited us to a double date with her and someone else. Wants to catch up and stuff,” Hitomu explained. “Oh that’s great. Now I can wear the new dress you guys got me. Hope it isn’t too fancy,” Musouka wondered. “She just texted me the place, heh it would be the perfect place to wear it,” he assured. “Good then,” she responded with a smile as she gave him a short kiss. “And you know, she could’ve gone without that information about us..” he said in a more bothered tone. “Oh come on, She would’ve asked you about it anyway,” she teased before going off to get dressed. Hitomu chuckled then went to do the same. After a while, the two were dressed and ready to go. Musouka wearing her blue and yellow summer dress while Hitomu wore a casual suit with a yellow tie. “Aw Hitomu you dress up good. Goes with those light eyes of yours,” Musouka said as she adjusted it and kissed him. “And I knew this dress would suit you too. Just.. please don’t say light eyes..” he said with a playful roll of his eyes. “Oh yeah right.. some real jerks in our lives have called you that and ruined a nice potential pet name. Ah, it doesn’t matter Hitomu. We’re gonna have a good time alright?” She said. “After you,” he said slyly as he opened the door for her as they went to their car.

Aika and Briar were outside of the restaurant waiting for Hitomu and Musouka to arrive. “So how do you know this Hitomu guy?” Briar wondered. “I guess you can say I've had a tendency on hitting on his lady friends,” Aika said as she laughed. “And his girlfriend is she cute?” she joked. “Oh my god,” Aika stopped herself and looked at Briar. “Well not as cute as you but yeah,” Aika finished. Just then Hitomu and Musouka arrived. “Hey Aika,” Musouka called as the two walked up to them. “Hey, who’s your lovely date?” Hitomu asked as he went to shake Briar’s hand. “Oh hey I'm Briar you must be Hitomu I've heard a little bit about you from our mutual friend,” she answered. “Is that so? That’s surprising. This is Musouka,” he said. “Nice to meet you Briar,” she said. “Likewise,” Briar said as she lightly clasped Musouka’s hand and gave her a nod. “So let's go in?” Hitomu asked Aika. She nodded and the group followed her in. An attendant lead them to their table and sat them down. They each ordered their drinks and began looking at the menus. “Wow Aika this place is all out. And you said you already had this place reserved? What if I had said no to coming?” Hitomu teased. “Me and Briar would have went alone this is one of my favorite restaurants in Yumemi,” Aika said as she closed her memu knowing already what she was going to order. Briar continued looking at the menu.

“So much to choose from here. Hitomu, we should eat in more places like this,” Musouka said as she scanned her menu. “We can’t take advantage of the money we have so easily Musouka,” he said. “Not all the time but every so often at least,” she said as she nudged him. “How did you get introduced to this place, Aika?” She added. “My dad used to own it so I ate here a lot as a kid. When we originally left Yumemi behind he sold off a lot of his assets,” she said in a slightly somber tone. “Oh that’s ok though, you may not own it but you can still revel in it. Heck, if you wanted to you could even try buying it back,” Musouka said kindly. “Yeah that's if Alexandria would ever let me buy it back. The Bryce family picked up the place after my father left it,” Aika said as she picked up her drink and lightly shook it watching the liquid ripple. “Oh are you kidding? Her? She just won’t get off you will she..” Hitomu said while rolling his eyes. “She’s the one you two tried to get info off of and it didn’t work out so well right? Ugh she needs to leave you alone,” Musouka said as she shook her head. “Worst part is I'm sure she doesn't know my connection to this place. It's just some other property under her family’s estate for her,” Aika said with a roll of her eyes. “Hm I wouldn’t be surprised if she did know and owns it out of spite,” Hitomu said bitterly. Briar looked at the group with wide eyes. She did not hear much about this side of Aika's life. “So what's up with this Alexandria girl?” Briar asked them.

“Well apparently she’s not as nice as the rest of Yumemi makes her out to be. Which is so weird, you would think she’s great. She donates to the city and seems all around nice,” Musouka said. “Goes to show to not judge a book by its cover,” Hitomu said in a disdained voice, thinking back to the first time he met her with Aika. Musouka kindly rubbed his arm to ease his mood. “I knew Alexandria for a long time. Her, Nina, and I were the three ‘princesses’ we spent a lot of weekends together when our parents would meet and talk business. But it’s true!” He responded. Aika nodded. “Yeah, maybe I'm just trying to excuse her because I haven't been the best person to the people around me either,” she said as she looked down. “What do you mean? You showed Hitomu a good time, you’re not rude to me, and you’re taking Briar on this date. I’d say you’re a good friend,” Musouka said. “I guess I can't be all bad either,” Aika said with a smile. Briar then turned to Hitomu and Musouka. “So how long have you guys been together?” she asked them. The two bashfully glanced at each other. “I think maybe a year now, isn’t it..?” Musouka said as she tried to think back. “But we’ve known each other for longer than that so it feels like more,” Hitomu playfully added. “Hey stop it,” she said more embarrassedly. “How long have you been with Aika? I didn’t hear about you the last time her and I met up,” Hitomu asked. “We’ve been casually seeing other for little under a year. We've been thinking about moving in together though,” Briar answered. “Thinking,” Aika added with a smile on her face. “Oh that sounds nice,” Musouka chimed.

Just then, the waiter came and took each of their orders. While they waited they talked more and got to know each other better until their food came and they dug in. They commented on their choices as Musouka asked about recommended foods from the restaurant. They chatted and laughed all through the rest of their date together.

Name: Momonaga Aika ( 桃中あいか )

Age: 14 (second year middle school)

Personality: energetic, cheerful, clumsy, naive, and super friendly and helpful!

Hobbies: collecting plushies, cushions & other cute and soft stuff, making plushies etc (despite not being very good at it)

She is supposed to be the amalgamation of everything I hate about the obligatory pink protagonists, namely Mana, Megumi and Ichika. She also ended up with my least favourite design out of the bunch, because she was the first I drew so it was like first draft, and the others could expand upon it. The idea was fluffy shapes everywhere and soft poofy hair, and some ribbons because I love ribbons. As for the civilian look, any design similarities to Mickey or Minnie Mouse are purely coincidental. The school uniform ended up looking way too much like the one in Go! Princess, but I can’t help it, that one took so many of my favourite school uniform elements I wanted to use!

I tried to pick names that could have the kanji for ‘soft’ in them for the characters (if they weren’t written in hiragana), but this one ended up as Aika because I just like the name. Plus the pink Cures tend to have names that mean mushy stuff like love, wishes and miracles so it shouldn’t stick out too much.

It was getting late…really late, and BlackJack had just finished tearing down after their most recent live. It went so well and she was absolutely exhausted. Violet and Mazumi were already on their way out with the two seniors from Akatsuki. They had gotten really close with Keito and Kuro, and she wanted them both to be happy. They had asked her if she needed anything before they left for the night, and she of course said no. All she wanted was the longest nap in history. “We’ll see you at home, Aika-chan.”

Waving goodbye for now, she looked around for her things. She yawned, stretching and after she had gotten out of the live clothes and into those comfy practice hoodies and pants…she felt much better. Aika was still tired but at least she was comfy! It wasn’t too long after her older sister and Mazumi left that she saw Chiaki approaching her. Waving a bit sleepily, she smiled. “I didn’t know you were still here.”

He gave her that bright and sunny smile and a tight hug to go along with it. She squeezed back, already feeling revitalized. He just had this way of giving energy wherever he went, like a portable sun. “You performed so well! I’m sure you left the audience speechless!”

She blushed, rocking on her heels a bit before making eye contact again. His eyes just sparkled with excitement and happiness, and it just made her night so much better. “Thank you! We tried really hard, and I’m not sure if I could do that again for a while. I’m tired…”

“A hero’s duty is to help those in need! Let me walk you home.”

Her fingers were soon laced with his, making their way off school grounds and toward where she lived. They took a few detours, naturally, because she didn’t really want to part ways with him so soon. And she thought that he felt the same way. They talked almost endlessly about anything and everything, and it was a reason she never wanted to leave. He always had so much to say, and she loved it. Eventually the walking was starting to get to be too much, and she yawned again.

“Aika-chan, do you want to stay over? There’s this new tokusatsu show on tomorrow morning and I think you’d really like it! What do you say?!” Those eyes…she just couldn’t get over how eager and excited he was. She was stunned, more so than usual. Squeezing his hand a little, she nodded.

“I’d really like that! I’m sure Vivi-chan and Mazu-kun would like the house to themselves anyway. Thank you~.” She couldn’t help but shove down the excited giggles. This was going to be awesome. “You’re the best, Superhero.”

☂ = giving them their jumper to keep warm

Fall was one of her favorite times of the year for a lot of reasons. There was the seasonal drinks, the changing of the leaves, and of course she got to wear her favorite jackets on the way home. She was sitting outside after school waiting for her sister to get done talking with somebody about something. Violet never gave her much information, just that she’d be back later after taking care of something.

She was humming, drawing in her sketchbook some designs for a stage that Mazumi had suggested as something they could collaborate with Akatsuki on for a joint live. She didn’t have very many details, just ‘something that looked dope’. Sighing, she began sketching the basics.

Even though she had taken one of her jackets with her, she was still a little cold since the wind was picking up a little. Frowning, she shifted positions so her legs were crossed under her and she could put most of her arm weight on the pages so they stopped blowing and messing up her lines.

Surprises were everywhere today, and soon her favorite superhero was sitting next to her, looking at her drawings. Almost instictively, her head leaned over to rest on his shoulder, smiling as her hand continued to create the stage on her paper. “Your nose is all red!”

“Huh?” It took her a minute, but it was probably because she was cold. Her nose always did that, even when it was just a little bit chilly. “Oh! It’s probably because I’ve been outside drawing in the wind and stuff. I’m okay though!”

It wasn’t like that was going to stop Chiaki though. She looked up to see him shifting to take off his jacket, and she blinked a little bit. Yeah but wouldn’t he get cold. “You should wear this! I’m a little too warm anyway, and you look cold.” Well she couldn’t argue with that.

Moving the sketchbook out of the way for a minute, she took it from his hands, slipping it on and my god…it was the warmest thing ever. She wanted to just bury herself in it, and Aika couldn’t help but do just that…only a little. “Aaaahhhh, it’s so warm~. But won’t you get cold?”

She picked up the sketchbook again, snuggling up against his shoulder. “Nope! I’m like a portable heater, so I don’t usually get cold fwuahaha!” His laugh always made her smile, and she was nuzzling into the super warm and comfy jacket, that smelled a lot like him.

“You smell nice by the way…”

♣ = discovering them crying

Aika knew that this day would be coming, but that didn’t mean she was any more prepared for it. Sure…she would still see her sister and ‘brother’ at home…but her school life would be so empty without them. And on top of that…it meant Chiaki was leaving too. And she wasn’t prepared for any of this to happen so fast.

Graduation ceremony was drawing closer and closer, and with the days that passed…it was harder to keep her positive attitude. It wasn’t the end of the world, but losing so many close people at school…it was going to be hard. She had spent more and more of her time on the terrace, drawing landscapes and cityscapes to try and take her mind off the impending ceremony.

It was hard…so hard…and she just couldn’t do it anymore. Aika was on the terrace again, as usual, but she wasn’t drawing this time. She had placed her head on one of the tables, silent tears coming down her face. It was embarrassing, to be crying like this on the terrace but no one else was up here and she couldn’t hold it in anymore. No matter how hard she tried to shove it down…it just kept coming back stronger.

Lifting her face from the table, she wiped her eyes with her jacket sleeve, sniffling and trying to stop the tears but nothing worked. Sounds of footsteps were echoing in her ears, and she had to think of something before somebody found her. But it was all too late for her, because Chiaki was all but bounding across the terrace, probably looking for her.

“Aika-chan…what’s wrong?! Are you hurt?”

She shook her head no, wiping off her face some more. “N-no…well n-not like that. I…I j-just…not ready for graduation…” She tried to hide her face, but apparently Chiaki wasn’t having any of that. He took her hands, holding them and giving her this sympathetic smile.

“Ah…I didn’t think of that!” He paused, looking away for a minute, but turned his attention back to her. She was still blinking tears, and it was making it hard to see. “Don’t worry Aika-chan, I’m not gone forever, just from school! We’ll still get to see each other even though I’m not here! A hero always answers the call!”

She smiled, still sniffling and probably looking awful but he probably didn’t even care. “Th-thank you…s-sorry about th-this…”

“Don’t be sorry! I should have known that this was the reason you’ve been so upset lately. Call for me whenever you need me, okay?!”

She all but jumped up off the chair she was in, tackling him into a hug, hiding her face some more. She nodded, and pretty soon she was all wrapped up in those hugs she’d grown so fond of. He was right, he wasn’t gone forever. She’d still see him. And suddenly, the world wasn’t quite so dim after all.

Chiaki Morisawa had stolen her heart and she never wanted it back.

Aika and Chiaki had been out on the town for a date that day. It was the weekend and neither of their units were involved in any lives coming up, which was the first time in nearly two months. They had been trying to work something out for so long, but things just kept coming up. But finally, after many rescheduled plans, they were here now roaming around downtown.

She was holding his hand, swinging it lightly as she rambled about this cute little craft store that she really liked to go to down here. They had spend the entire afternoon and part of the evening there, and after a few shopping stops, they decided to have dinner somewhere.

It was amazing. The entire day she hadn’t stopped smiling once. It was easy to hang around with him, even if they weren’t doing anything, just his company was enough for her. After one of the best dates she’d had, they were leaving the restaurant and walking toward the bridge just outside the marketplace.

The twilight was covering the market in a beautiful orange glow. The sunlight was bouncing off the water under the small bridge they were on, and she was looking down at the sun’s reflection. Interlocked hands were draped over the railing, and her eyes wandered back to his face.

He looked so radiant in the sunset, and she didn’t even notice how close they were until the distance was growing shorter. It seemed like they both knew what they wanted, but neither of them were making any sort of progress on getting there. Emerald eyes now half closed with her heartbeat nearly drowning in her ears, her anticipation was nearly killing her. Would he do it? Should she do it? What was supposed to...

Her thoughts stalled as the radiant hero closed the final distance with a soft kiss. She held his hand tightly unsure about what to do with the other one. The movements were soft, gentle, almost intoxicating in all the right ways. Aika was returning the soft kiss, heart nearly beating out of her chest. Her face ignited to what she swore was probably as bright as the red on the jacket he gave her a few days ago.

It was quick, but it felt like hours. Her heart rate was racing, and she could barely think straight. He had kissed her...like really kissed her. Gentle fingers from his free hand came to move some of the fluffy brown hair out of her face, and that only made the red worse. She was biting her lip, but she was smiling...and so was he with that ever positive smile that could chase away the night. There didn’t need to be any exchanges of words, just the comforting feeling of standing there in front of him, nuzzling herself into his chest. The perfect superhero...my only superhero...

My Review of Berserk (2016 - 2017)

THIS NEW STORY: It has been approximately two years since that fateful day when Guts nearly escaped a bloody hell-hole. Since that time, he roams the countryside. With one eye missing and an arm made of metal, he continues on a solo journey. But because of a brand on his neck, he has become a roaming target for demons that lurk in the night. This story of Berserk takes Guts into a whole new set-up with new allies, new enemies, but his attitude remains. Most of the first season is dedicated to finding Casca (who ends up missing), while the second season adds more characters that travel with Guts as they slay random demons. BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: First the sub. Unfortunately, it’s the same cast from the movie trilogy instead of the original cast from the television series. I’ve already made my views pretty clear that I liked the TV series cast better than the movie cast (with the exception of Takahiro Sakurai playing Griffith). For new character purposes, there are many voices I can recognize within seconds (including Mitsuki Saiga and Satomi Arai). Now for licensing purposes, this anime is being streamed by Crunchyroll and will eventually be released by Crunchyroll on Blu-ray and DVD with an English dub. So now Berserk has three licensors for the franchise. The original series is with Media Blasters, the movies are with Viz, and now Crunchyroll has the new series. Never mind…I think FUNimation has its hands in this as well. And with that said, let's talk about the new dub. I didn’t think it was possible, but they just made this shit worse than it possibly could be by replacing the remaining 3 voices with other people. I don’t want to pass judgment on the new voice actors. I honestly think Kaji Tang is okay as Guts. But it’s just a definite kick in the ears when they replaced Guts, Griffith, and Casca’s English voice actors. And seeing as the dubbing company is in L.A. and two of these voice actors are stationed in L.A., this seems really fishy. Especially since they’ve been doing these characters for almost 20 years and just recently did the movie trilogy. With that said, here’s the NEW English cast to Berserk 2016/2017. *Guts is played by Kaji Tang (known for Archer on Fate/stay night: UBW, Tsumugu on Kill la Kill, Kizakura on Danganronpa 3, Kouen on Magi, and Derflinger on Familiar of Zero) *Griffith is played by Steve Staley (known for Hitsugaya on Bleach, Neji on Naruto, Inumuta on Kill la Kill, Moondoggie on Eureka Seven, and Senri on Vampire Knight) *Casca is played by Karen Strassman (known for Takano on Higurashi, Suigintou on Rozen Maiden, Kallen on Code Geass, Anna on Monster, Miyuki on Lucky Star, Sawako on K-ON, and Yasuko on Toradora) OLD CHARACTERS: So it’s been two years since the events of the original series/story. So aside from Guts, where are the other memorable characters? Let’s start with the Band of the Hawk…oh…that’s right, they’re all dead. Except for little Ricket! Little Ricket grew up in 2 years and spends his time as an apprentice for a blacksmith. Princess Charlotte is still missing Griffith and her father is dead. Casca has no memories of her past left and literally has the mind of a child since the day she escaped from the blood-soaked, corpse-filled hell-hole. Griffith…is still a fucking demon! But somehow has acquired his human form back. NEW CHARACTERS: In a tough new world Guts is in with demons and evil spirits looming around, why don’t we add fairies, witches, and Christians? Yeah, why not?! First we have Puck, a fairy that’s there…He’s just there. Isidro is a young boy who takes a shine to Guts after he saved him. But I honestly think he’s just the comic relief of the show. Farnese in the first season was a leader of a prominent group of knights and was heavily religious. But after being saved by Guts on several occasions, Farnese and her right-hand man Serpico wound up traveling with Guts. Schierke is a witch-in-training who ends up helping Guts. And Sonia…I want to say this bitch has some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. She ends up following, helping, and praising Griffith. She's just a complete mystery! With that said, here’s what you might recognize these new characters from. JAPANESE CAST: *Puck is played by Kaoru Mizuhara (known for Misao on Lucky Star, Rea Amano on Mirai Nikki, and Satoshi on Anohana) *Isidro is played by Hiro Shimono (known for Hiro on ef – a tale of memories, Hiro on Soul Eater, Aoba on Durarara x2, Akihisa on Baka and Test, Connie on Attack on Titan, and Shou on Uta no Prince-sama) *Farnese is played by Yoko Hikasa (known for Mio on K-ON, Rias on High School DxD, Izumi on Working!!, Satan on Umineko, Yukinokouji on Inu x Boku SS, Young Rei on Free!, and singer to songs on Attack on Titan, K-ON, and Hayate) *Serpico is played by Kazuyuki Okitsu (known for Madarame on Genshiken Nidaime, Seishin on Shiki and Vincent Phantomhive on Black Butler) *Schierke is played by Chiwa Saito (known for Senjogahara on Monogatari, Natsumi on Sgt Frog, Aika on Aria the Animation, and Homura on Madoka Magica) *Sonia is played by Yoshino Nanjo (known for Eli on Love Live and Akio on Baka and Test) ENGLISH CAST: *Puck is played by Sarah Williams (known for Sayaka on Madoka Magica, Nonon on Kill la Kill, and Rika on SAO) *Isidro is played by Erik Krimerer (known for Takeshi on Your Lie in April, Sonic on One Punch Man, Ryuuji on Toradora and Alibaba on Magi) *Farnese is played by Erica Lindbeck (known for Kaori on Your Lie in April, Eli on Love Live, Anaru on Anohana, Moko on Skip Beat, and Gyokuen on Magi) *Serpico is played by Max Littleman (known for Saitama on One Punch Man, Kousei on Your Lie in April, [older] Konohamaru on Naruto/Boruto, and Yunan on Magi) *Schierke is played by Mela Lee (known for Rena on Higurashi, Erika on Durarara, Shinku on Rozen Maiden, Rin on Fate/stay night, Yuuki on Vampire Knight, and Darry on Gurren Lagann) *Sonia has not been announced yet. NEW FAVORITE CHARACTER: So in the old Berserk series, I enjoyed Casca very much. But in this series, unfortunately Casca’s memories and mind are just…well, let’s not go there. This time, I found myself liking Luca from the 2016 season. I don’t care that she’s a literal whore. She was faithful to her friends and did what she had to in order to survive. And did her best to protect Casca and even help out Guts. She’s one of the nicest characters out there in a world of uncertainty, demons, and God-fearing dick-wads. SHIPPING: Sighs...Someday dammit! Someday! Schierke x Guts is still cute though... MUSIC: As you know, the original Berserk had one of the best OST’s in anime history (excluding the opening and ending themes). And even those themes were pretty awesome in their own way. Now if there was one thing I was satisfied with watching this abomination, the music was decent. The background music was fitting and definitely a step up from the movie trilogy. As for the opening and ending, I really loved the first opening. The music I mean, the animation can suck it. The first opening shows a 1:30 condensed story to Guts’s time with the Band of the Hawk, while the second opening shows more action with the new cast. The two ending themes were softer than the openings. But if I had to choose my favorite songs, I would pick the 2016 opening, Inferno by 9mm Parabellum Bullet and the 2017 ending, Issai wa Monogatari by Yoshino Nanjo. ANIMATION: So did the animation improve after the movies? Hell no! I don’t condone the animation being so CGI. A lot of the character designs feel very sloppy and lazy to a point where I’d almost compare it to the first season of Sailor Moon Crystal. The animation to this series is somehow WORSE than the movie trilogy (I didn’t think it was possible). It almost makes the series unwatchable. Me personally, I like to see things through to the end, but the animation is just so atrocious that it bugs me how some of the character designs and movements can set off my eyes. For God’s sake, the Playstation games for Berserk have better character design than this fucking anime and that’s a fucking shame! ENDING TO SEASON ONE: For half of the season, Guts has been searching for Casca and every episode he gets close but no girl! Casca has been literally wandering around where she’s cared for by a band of whores, groped by creepies, revered by more creepies, praised, condemned, and eventually captured by bad guys. And let’s not forget that her brain has been reduced to that of an infant's! Casca ends up being kidnapped and is about to be sacrificed because she has a mark (just like Guts) and is somehow immune to being eaten by these demons that consume regular humans. Isidro and Puck were able to save Casca before she could be burned at the stake. And Guts was able to slay his way to where Casca is and take down a few angels. But during this night of hell, demons of all shapes and sizes were coming towards anything remotely human. But thanks to Guts, he was able to take care of them all. And then morning came and there’s one more giant monster to take care of. But that monster has… ...wait...is that Griffith in human form? Well seeing as this is the last episode of the season and the last 5 minutes of the episode, we're not getting any questions answered. Thought so. Okay, onto season two. SEASON TWO: The animation is still giving me eye-cancer. Come on guys, if Sailor Moon Crystal could improve tenfold within nine months, you guys could have improved to a point where the characters don’t look like dead-eyed bowel movements! But I digress! Guts and Casca return back to Ricket and the swordsmith (or lack there of). The old swordsmith died sometime after Guts left. But that moment has passed because guess who returned? Bastard betrayer and dude looks like a lady himself, Griffith! Because Ricket doesn’t know, he’s optimistic of a revival for the Band of the Hawk. But Guts is all, “HELL NO, GRIFFITH MUST DIE!” Griffith even has one of the old monsters (Zod) that Guts fought in the very first season go after and fight Guts. It wasn’t until Griffith and Zod left that Guts told Ricket everything about why he hates Griffith now. That he was the reason all of his comrades are dead and that Casca is in a state of…let’s just call it confusion. And so it’s decided that Guts and Casca will take a trip to wherever the hell Puck (the fairy) came from. Because fairies for whatever reason this story has to continue! However, certain bad things happen at night that cause Guts to act beastly around Casca. A possible side-effect to the brand on his neck, who knows? END OF SEASON TWO: So this 2017 version seemed a little better compared to the previous season in the action department. Guts does get another upgrade in the weaponry department thanks to the Skull Knight (the same one that saved him at the end of the third movie), though this upgrade does come at a price as it does shorten Guts's life-span. But Guts does get the job done when protecting his group from uncertain doom. Well, Guts now has the Berserker…and now part of his hair has a silver streak. And this group got a hot tip that this next town may help Casca regain her brains and she can go back to normal. YAY, my favorite character could go back to normal! How many more episodes to this season? One. But…there could be another season next year, right? Manga author puts Berserk on hiatus until further notice. OH, FUCK ME! And I suppose we’re not going to see any interactions between Guts and Griffith! Didn't think so. So the last episode has them in a new town filled with humans. There’s a meeting between Schierke and Sonia. Then another meeting between Isidro and Wolflame (that turned into a brawl)! So Gut’s comrades meet Griffith’s comrades. And the final episode is just Schierke getting upset at Isidro for saying something but then he apologizes to her by the end. And for a second, we had to worry about Schierke joining Sonia, which would lead her to work with Griffith. But she’s sticking to Guts. And we end with Schierke getting a wardrobe update (since she gets looked down a lot for dressing like a witch). And a promise of this journey continuing! This anime is a fucking mess. While the original Berserk anime left off on a WTF ending, the two seasons that followed were just a mess to sit through. And at the top of the list of complaints, it was the damn animation. I think many of us long for the days of the hand-drawn animes of the 1990s, especially when we get this CGI dump. But I think another thing that set me off was setting us up for something that might be amazing only for the last episode to just give us a middle finger. I think it’s too late to ask for a reboot to this since the reboot to Berserk has shit animation too. But as long as we’re waiting for a continuation, you think the animation could improve…just a bit? I don’t urge anyone to sit through this eye cancer. But if you were a big fan of Berserk, original Berserk and were truly curious of what happens to Guts next, go for it. If you want to watch Berserk…I urge you to find the original series. Please, see it if you can find it. But if you can’t, the movie trilogy is available for purchase from your video retailer and even Youtube has it available for purchase/rent. As for this series in particular, as usual Crunchyroll has all the episodes available (including the two recap episodes). And FUNimation has the dub available for paying subscribers.

The character you never expected to love so much: I only have one I didn’t expect for Naritaverse I think and that’s Elmer. I liked him as a character sure but I think I’d discarded him kind of in my mind until reading the novels when you realise what a fucking mess he is and I love him so fuckin much. Everyone else I kind of expected to a degree. Oh wait, for DRRR!! SH, Jami. Narita can always get me with those strong af cuties and I told myself this time OFC NOT and seriously before I met him as a character I was like ‘why shd I care about YET ANOTHER insanely strong weirdo’ and then AND THEN it was Jami. Mini Ninjas - okay for the game, honestly Kunoichi because you unlock her at the end and she’s kind of more difficult to use right and she is very much the opposite of me in style but dammit I’m attached she’s one of my kids. For the show, Shoko because she seems just a bratty villain but she’s also deeply unhappy and in a situation that you can’t help feel sorry for her. She’s so cool sometimes too, even if her character design is extra af. Overwatch - Roadhog. Gdi I love Roadhog now.

The character you relate to most: ahahahahah definitely definitely Shizuo from DRRR!! and Yahiro from SH bc they both speak to me, as a person who had anger management and anxiety, which caused me to be kinda violent sometimes when I was younger. Also both come off as autistic, esp Yahiro, and I feel. Kinda Hayato to a degree (using fiction as a sort of escapism to a degree). Honestly, Hiro. He’s a fuckin fool, in the game and the show. He doesn’t get so much time to show it in the game but in the show he’s a jackass and like...same. Weirdly Junkrat.

The character you’d slap: Izaya, Huey, everyone from EB but esp Gitarin because I feel like that would be fun not for any real reason, Mirald from Vamp! bc trash, I’d kind of like to slap the Viscount because he’s just a puddle of blood and that would be fuckin stupid Shoko needs a fuckin slap tbh, so does Ashida, and so does Hiro bc oh my god that hellchild I WANT TO SLAP NOBODY OK PPL ARE GOOD i kinda wanna slap reaper back to life but i dont think how that works. possibly sombra too. and maybe widow. ok fine I do want to slap people.

Three favorite characters: Shizuo, Elmer, Hayato Tora, Suzume, Hiro Junkrat, Lucio, Reinhardt A character you liked at first but not so much anymore: uhhhhhh none? Like...I like everyone as much as I ever have. Kunoichi was done a fuckin disservice in the show yes she was adorable but then also FFS Again, none here. I like everyone to the degree I always have.

A character you did not like at first, but they’ve grown on you: Ferret von Waldstein irked me to start with but she grew on me a lot Kunoichi. I didn’t like her because she’s very feminine in the game and I just didn’t connect with that. But yeah I’m attached. Also her in the show being a tiny little child idk I don’t rly like that choice but she’s adorable Roadhog. So fond of Roadhog now.
