I think the reason why Yashiki doesn’t make any major progress till Chapter 5 lies in his choice of partners.

I don’t mean to offend, but Moe, Ai and Shou, while providing items and possessing skills helpful to the investigation, look up to Yashiki and turn to him whenever they face something dangerous. They unknowingly aggravate his sense of responsibility and thus, he can’t completely focus on uncovering the Departed’s true identity when the lives of the target AND his partner are on the line. Daimon, as the only other adult of the group at that time, is a source of support which soothes the burden on Yashiki’s shoulders, but he is only that: support. As a doctor, he assesses the conditions of his patient (the school) and refers to a specialist if there’s need for one, hence recommending Yashiki, the “Spirit Doctor”, to take care of the problem with the Departed. In short, despite being in the same age range as Yashiki, he too depends on the latter because he’s the expert in matters related to the supernatural.

Meanwhile, we have Hiroo, Mashita and Yasuoka. The first two are no doubt the most strong-willed among the Mark Bearers: one with her insatiable curiosity and the other with his determination to uncover the truth. They’re also not minors (20 is the age of majority in Japan), so Yashiki’s authority (which isn’t much, let’s be real) is nonexistent to them. As for Yasuoka, while her role is the same as Moe’s, she too is a supernatural expert in her own right and provides guidance which Yashiki can rely on without the need to meet any expectation from her.

For anyone interested, I translated what the characters are saying when you go to their profiles in Death Mark 2. I was curious as to what they were saying, and I wanted to practice my Japanese. It's not perfect but I tried 😆 Keep in mind I'm not fluent, so if you see something translated wrong, feel free tell me!

Re: Moe as a potential successor to Yashiki, I think that the game may potentially be setting up for all of the "spirit detectives" (Yashiki, Mashita, and Yasuoka) to have a successor.

Yashiki's is obviously Moe in this case, but Death Mark 2 throws in a sort of mentor relationship between Mashita and Shou that leads me to believe that they may be setting up for Shou to take over Mashita's place. And Ai has a similar relationship to Yasuoka.

I'm not sure if it's meant to just be a plot device in case for some reason they would need to get rid of one of those characters or if its setting up for something, but it's very interesting to see the parallels between the older characters and the younger Mark Bearers.

Some headcanons I have for Shou and the other Mark Bearers:

Shou loves spicy food and has the highest spice tolerance out of all of the Mark Bearers.

Mashita can't cook, so he always keeps his shelves stocked with instant ramen and the like; either that, or he orders takeout.

Saya was a smoker so Masamune always kept a pack on himself for her, which is why Yashiki instinctively reached into his coat pocket when Shou asked him for one.

Shou occasionally sleeps over at Mashita's apartment, usually after the two have spent the day exhaustively investigating, researching or sorting cases.

Moe feeds the stray cats around her neighbourhood once a week, so now she has a horde of cats crowding her backyard whenever the time comes around.

Hiroo and Eita have the highest alcohol tolerances out of the adults.

Mashita visits the bar Shou works at when the delinquent is on break. The two usually spend the time talking and smoking.

Mashita offered Shou a position to work with him a short while after the Red Riding Hood case.

Eita's favourite thing to photograph is his friends. He has a dedicated space on one of his walls for all of the polaroids he has of them.

Shou got the scar on his face from a spirit when he was a little kid, but he doesn't remember it.

Yashiki did eventually go to one of Ai's shows, but only after Moe and Daimon agreed to go with him. Ai made sure to get them into the V.I.P. section.

The Mark Bearers attempted a night of group karaoke once. They collectively decided it would never happen again.

Shou got into heavy substance abuse when he was younger, but it got a lot worse after his knee got injured and he was forced out of the baseball club. He started trying to get better after the Shimi-O case.

He has his own apartment that he rents for cheap in the shittier part of H City.

Ai loves singing and dancing with her friends, even if they aren't good at it. Her favourites are Yasuoka and Yashiki.

Shou sometimes accompanies Moe when she goes out to research a spirit or a "haunted" location. Usually, it's because she asks him to, but he also tends to invite himself along (even if he doesn't particularly want to go).
