The morning’s farm activities include: milking the goats, carrying hay out to the horse, feeding the chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc. and collecting eggs, and tending the rabbits. Later on, gathering vegetables and flowers for market day, checking the fruit trees and associated beehives, tinkering with the tractor, preparing the baler for the last cutting of hay, etc., etc. All the familiar farm chores...only these are all being done in the heart of the City of Detroit, almost within sight of the smokestacks of the giant Ford complex. This farm is located on the converted playground of one of the city’s public schools, the Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA).
And CFA is not the only farm in Detroit. By my count, there are now at least six micro-farms within the city limits ranging from about an acre to several acres. Even more important, there are now scores of productive community and school gardens, along with hundreds of family gardens, which are providing fresh fruits and vegetables for their neighborhoods and for sale at various farmers’ markets around town. And the urban farming movement is growing here faster each year, strengthening people with healthy produce, and re-energizing communities with shared planning, work, and celebration. It is becoming a movement of urban farmers worthy of linking up with the readers of Small Farmer’s Journal. But how did this movement come about?
Detroit, as everyone knows, was “The Motor City,” the auto capital of the world, home of the GM, Ford, and Chrysler. But in the mid-1970’s, the first of the oil crises hit Detroit like a tsunami. Plants downsized and closed, leaving tens of thousands of Detroiters out of work and neighborhoods devastated. People started leaving the city in droves. That exodus left broad swaths of open fields where vibrant neighborhoods stood a few years earlier. By some estimates there are now in total about 40 square miles of vacant land inside the city limits of Detroit. And as the people left, this new prairie land was rapidly repopulated by pheasants, rabbits, and raccoons, ’possums and songbirds, along with the occasional fox or coyote. But it also brought some determined new urban farmers. As a result, by the early 1990’s, the Detroit Agriculture Network (DAN) came into being to provide a forum for exchange of information, resources, seeds, etc., among these new farmers.

THROWING KYIV UNDER THE TRACTOR: In a major cave-in to Europe’s farming lobby, EU countries overnight agreed to impose restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural sales, dealing a significant blow to its exports.
Less revenue for Kyiv: This retreat ahead of this week’s EU leaders’ summit (for which farmers are descending on Brussels again) paves the way for a deal with the European Parliament today to partly roll back Kyiv’s trade benefits, officials and diplomats told Playbook. That’s expected to result in a revenue loss of more than €1 billion a year for the war-struck country.
Masks off: At last night’s meeting of the 27 government envoys, France came out in support of Poland, asking for a limit on imports of Ukrainian poultry, eggs, sugar and wheat, according to two people briefed on the discussion.
Strategic yogurt, revisited: Just as Macron stressed France’s no-holds-barred support for Ukraine, the pitchfork-wielding farmers have blown a hole into his “whatever it takes” soufflé.
Signal to Russia: Vladimir Putin can rely on European agri-food groups to do his lobbying for him. Russia’s full supermarket shelves — heaving with EU products — have been one of the regime’s go-to arguments to show Russia is winning the war.
Contradictory policy: This isn’t the first time the EU bowed to its agri sector when it comes to Russia’s war on Ukraine. While Russian-flagged ships are banned from EU ports, there’s an exemption for those carrying Russian fertilizers and pesticides. In previous decisions, the EU also rolled back asset freezes against Russian oligarchs involved in the agri-food trade.
The argument, back then, was that tougher restrictions on Russian fertilizers would lead to higher food prices in Europe. But that’s exactly what restrictions on imports from Ukraine will also do.
HAPPENING TODAY: The Belgian Council presidency and MEPs will meet this evening for negotiations on the new restrictions. Parliament has also asked for a lower ceiling at which the restrictions will kick in, as my colleagues Camille Gijs and Bartosz Brzeziński report in this must-read.
WINNERS AND LOSERS: Take a moment to appreciate the farming lobby’s political feat. Sky-high energy prices, a narrowly averted winter heating crisis, an influx of millions of refugees and Putin’s nuclear saber-rattling didn’t undermine EU will to support Ukraine — but farmers successfully convinced leaders to U-turn on policies aimed at supporting Kyiv’s income.
Winners: EU agricultural groups, who get to have their cake and eat it. After a host of measures meant to lower their production costs (such as derogations from environmental rules and the reintroduction of fossil fuel subsidies), they will now get measures to shield them from competition and increase their sales prices.
Also a winner: Russia. Today’s decision doesn’t just mean a revenue loss for Ukraine; it proves that EU leaders’ support for Ukraine caves under interest group pressure.
Losers: Ukrainian farmers, who look set to forgo some €1.2 billion a year in sales to the EU. And European consumers, who will get even less supply and choice, which could again drive up food price inflation.
BLAME IT ON THE ELECTION YEAR: Asked why they caved in, senior officials blamed their leaders’ fear that the farmers’ protests could fuel new populist parties, such as the BBB in the Netherlands.
But there are other ways to placate them: As some EU officials stressed, countries could help the majority of farmers simply by distributing subsidies more fairly. Some 80 percent of the EU’s direct farm subsidies go to the 20 percent biggest farms, according to the Commission.

French farmers protest Mercosur deal
French farmers have announced a new wave of protests next week against a planned European Union free trade agreement with trade bloc Mercosur, saying increased imports of agricultural products from South America will damage their livelihoods.
Farmers are planning protests on Monday against the EU’s free trade agreement with Mercosur, saying increased imports from South America will damage European Union agriculture, the head of France’s largest farm lobby FNSEA said on Wednesday.
It came after farmers in Belgium called for demonstrations near EU headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday. Several tractors stopped in the European neighbourhood on Schuman Square opposite the European Commission and EU Council buildings.
Farmers in Belgium, which has fallen on hard times, fear that a pending treaty with the Mercosur organisation, which brings together Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil, could lead to a further decline in sales for European growers “due to unfair competition.” According to Belgian trade unions, the pact, which has been under discussion for years, could be approved during the upcoming G20 meeting on November 18-19 in Brazil.
The rally in Brussels was coordinated by police, who blocked several streets in Brussels, but traffic congestion was avoided.
“Bad agreement”
FNSEA head Arnaud Rousseau told France Inter radio:
This trade agreement, which links part of the South American states to Europe, risks having dramatic consequences for agriculture. So from Monday for a few days we will be in all regions to make sure that France’s voice is heard during the G20 in Brazil, and we hope that all European countries will join us because it’s not about a country, it’s not about France, it’s about Europe.
But French farmers are not going to block roads and motorways as they did last year, when anger at competition from cheaper imports, including from EU ally Ukraine, and the burden of regulation led to large-scale protests across the EU. He also added:
We are not here to worry the French people, we are here to tell them that we are proud to feed them and to continue to produce in France.
On Sunday, the country’s agriculture minister Annie Genevard called the planned free trade deal between South American countries and the EU a “bad agreement” as it would allow “99,000 tonnes of beef, 180,000 tonnes of sugar and the same amount of poultry” into the country and create damaging competition for local producers.
Weather-ravaged harvests and outbreaks of livestock disease, as well as political deadlock following snap elections earlier this summer, have added to French farmers’ discontent.

Please talk to us about wine and the domaine Tariquet?! And about your job if you want to? It sounds dope!
Woopsie, late reply, apologies!
All right, I would love to, but the funniest thing about all this is that, yes, I work for a wine estate, but no, I can’t talk to you about wine because I have zero practical or personal experience with it. I have been working there for years now and I *drumroll* ………don’t drink alcohol *applause, crowd cheering*
See, I used to work in hospitality and it was….not great. So, I took a week off and I decided that during that week off I’d find another job. Found an ad for a wine estate looking for someone who spoke english and knew how to spell. It sounded doable, so I applied. I’d never heard of Tariquet before, didn’t know shit about wine, had never worked in an office doing anything sales related, had no clue what the position would entail except what was written in the ad. Went to the interview with an amount of confidence that I have never been able to replicate since and somehow, long story short, got hired and have not been fired yet. And you know what? I love it there.
I started in the administration section of the export sales dpt, had to learn everything from scratch: the job itself and everything related to the making and selling of wine and just. Wine in general. (I like tea and hot chocolate, what can I say.) We also make and sell Bas-Armagnacs, so I had to learn about that too. Am also now working in marketing as part of a team, so more things to learn! (using photoshop and indesign and illustrator as part of my job?? 😍😍😍 hello yes, I am living the dream)
I cannot stress how great it is to find a place that will hire you even though your profile is not at all what they would usually go for, that will give you a chance to try and prove yourself instead of dismissing you out of hand. And I love learning things, so I guess it worked out.
Anyway, it turns out that while I’d never heard of it, Tariquet is actually quite big and famous? Which is hilarious because we are in the middle of nowhere, Gers, south-west France, where you wouldn’t expect anything to be, yet here we are. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely region, nicknamed the Little Tuscany (which, in hindsight, should have been a hint), all rolling hills and open skies, but it’s also one of the only two « départements » of the country with no highway and I don’t have enough hands to count the number of times I got stuck behind a tractor or another kind of agricultural vehicle on the road. It’s very rural. (I love it. the night sky over my house is gorgeous.) So yeah, it is quite big and famous and has wines and Bas-Armagnacs and bees?? so we even make a little bit of honey as well, which is dope. I mean, the estate is in the middle of vineyards and forests and meadows and things, it’s all very green and lovely and so nice. The view from the window of my office is lovely, it’s trees and vines and a part of the castle.
Anyway, um. I’m part of the lucky people who love their job. It is horrendously stressful at times and of course I wish I worked less and spent more time with Marcus (who is getting bored and looking for mischief as I type this. I see you, Marcus) but the work is interesting, my coworkers are great and have come to accept me and my idiosyncracies (there are a lot and they have been a source of issues in the past, so it wasn’t a sure thing), and the general atmosphere is the healthiest I’ve ever encountered in a work place.
…this is a lot longer than I anticipated, i am so sorry.
tl;dr: i couldn’t tell you whether Tariquet wines are good or not but I can tell you that working there is great :D (now I just hope this post won’t show up on any search or google alert or thing like that because if my bosses were to find this dumpster fire of a blog i’d be mortified 😅😅😅)
