1500-1599 Recap Part 36:
As the Recap now has nearly 40 Parts I am starting to feel like maybe, just maybe, there is little point to a recap if it’s nearly as long as the actual Legacy.
Agnes and Stephen had their daughter Amy, who died shortly after birth. Andrew had left for Windenburg Then Francis, Elinor and Mathias became adults. Anthony met Wren and got married. Lot happened. Anthony actually had no interest in romancing anyone but being the eldest and technical heir to the family not the legacy, he married anyways. With the only surviving spellcasters of Thomas’ children being Adrian and Ambrose my choice of heir was mostly decided lol.

Welcome to “New Fan consistently listens to TMA S2 while playing Minecraft and dying by a skeleton” I’m your host: the new fan. Or I dunno if I’m considered a new fan since I’m listening to s2 but I guess the podcast was made in 2016 and I finally got to it circa 2024. Anyways! Gotta get to it! Post too long already!
MAG 57: Personal Space
Eughhh this one is like top 5 TMA EPS of creeping me out. Lot of stuff here so I’m gonna talk a while. For example, Conrad Lukas was in charge of the project and the Lukas family was shown in Alone and Boatswain Call. Speaking of the latter, Nathaniel Lukas gave an investment to the project. He was the captain of that ship in MAG 33. Pinnacle Aerospsce is majority owned by the Fairchild family WHO CANNOT STAY OUT OF PEOPLES BUSINESS 💀
Carter, the guy who did the project, also had that feeling of being utterly alone in this damn void. He said the line between reality and dreaming was blurred, finding himself in space, a graveyard or an empty ocean. The latter two I think are a reference to Alone and High Pressure respectively which all have the theme of “loneliness, stranded, etc” in common.
The whole “being alone in a large empty space” has been a pattern. The Fairchild family features in that theme and even the Lukas family in Alone. Optic Solutions Limited is based in Norway but the only connection I can figure out is that Jurgen Leitner was from Norway but maybe there was something I missed. Anyways that’s it. God 😭
Nothing much on MAG 58: Rations. Another kind of emphasis on meat. I felt so bad for the unknown lady :( (EDIT 9/2: Benjamin Carlisle shares the same last name as Toby Carlisle and both have very prominent meat themes. God.)
MAG 59: Recluse
Oh boy Raymond Fielding. From what I heard before, I thought he was a good guy since like y’know he took in troubled kids but noooo. He seems to be like the same thing as that woman from Children of the Night. Creepy spider thing. Also; that damn table. Now we finally know what happened to the middle of the table, like the square. Also the apple; Same apple Evo found in burned out. Even described the same. Agnes also, in my theory, a good person because she kissed Ronald’s cheek before he left and then was persuaded to go down to the study where his cheek started burning and snapped him out of it. I think she’s good. I dunno what her deal is but still.
Also, again, the table. It’s definitely the same table. How did Graham find it? He said he bought it in a second hand shop in MAG 3. Did Ray donate it after the events? Did the house burn down but the table still survived? Like god. How did the middle part of the table end up under the tree? With the apple? I have so many questions.
MAG 60: The Observer Effect
Another eye theme. Not many connections but I’m assuming she wanted to blow up the Magnus institute with those barrels of petrol. Maybe she found out something her brother was involved in which she blamed the institute for. I think he didn’t die of a stroke because no one ever dies of natural causes, I mean come on.
Also. Jon getting an intervention is the funniest thing ever. Like he was like before “they’re avoiding me and giving me fruitful glances, they’re up to something” like my dude, they are worried about you 💀
“Yeah sorry if I’ve been distant”
“You literally watch my house”
“You rummaged through my desk”
“You said I was lying about a murder”
I’m literally cackling. They’re not even wrong, Jon is going a little cray cray from all this. He needs an emotional support cat I think.
#the magnus archives#tma#tma podcast#Zabala0z thoughts#I hate the Fairchild family already#also I don’t like the Lukas family#clearly the two families know each other and wanna inflict psychological trauma on everyone#ALSO I see the next episode has Basiras fellow officer#I’ve seen her name thrown around when I quickly skip over TMA posts to avoid spoilers in the tags#guessing she’s important#how is her nickname Daisy#how do you get that from Alice#sorry not important

On 16th December 1332 Edward Balliol was surprised by John Randolph, Earl of Moray, in a dawn attack at Annan
A regular in my posts Edward was a usurper to the throne of Scotland during the reign of David II, son of Robert the Bruce. The attack at Annan is also known through history as the Camisade of Annan, a camisade is a surprise attack occurring at night or at daybreak and is derived from the Spanish word camisa meaning shirt, in this case the would-be king Edward Balliol had to flee Scotland in his nightshirt!
Archibald Douglas and John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray, gathered about 1000 men at Moffat and on the night of December 16-17 1332, in a remarkable feat of arms they stormed to Annan and smashed into Balliol’s camp, slaughtering all who stood or slept in their way in a dawn raid. Balliol himself barely escaped with his life, fleeing to Carlisle bareback on his horse and without even time to put on his trews.
It was a humiliating defeat for Balliol, and for a short few months most of Scotland was in the hands of the Bruce faction. Balliol, and Edward III would be back to try again though, and these attempts to seize Scotland have been covered in posts throughout the year.
John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray was only 16 when these events took place, his brother was the more famous Earl of Moray, Thomas Randolph, a trusted general and companion-in-arms of Robert the Bruce, and while many of you wont know about young John as the Earl, you might know his sister better, she features in my post about a famous siege at Dunbar, and is known as Black Agnes.
Pics are of Balliol and Arms of the Randolph, Earls of Moray

Hi! This issue went through some pretty significant revisions over time, so I figure it’ll be fun to go over them real quick so you can get a glimpse into the writing and scripting process behind the scenes.
When this issue was originally scripted, Agnes would have lost the caps needed to get to Vegas in a much “nicer” way. As she took the money from Garret, he would lament that Agnes wouldn’t be around to do more work for her because he was hoping she would help shake down a few debtors of his around Freeside (a reference to the in-game quest “Debt Collector”). Then he would mention that without her, he’ll have to use the Wrangler’s usual bounty hunter, who’s a lot more trigger-happy and tends to collect debts in blood instead of caps. From there, the final page of the issue would have been the same, with Agnes being cagey about why she doesn’t have the money for Cass and the implication being Agnes paid off those debts out of the goodness of her heart.
This was very wisely rewritten for several reasons. The first is that the gesture was uncharacteristically altruistic of Agnes: she’d probably be disturbed by Garret’s flippant ruthlessness, but it’s ultimately not her problem and she doesn’t even know these people. Furthermore, she slaughtered the Khans in Boulder City because one of them merely helped Benny shoot her. I can’t imagine her putting off her pursuit of Benny just so she could do something nice. The second reason is that the original angle was extraordinarily boring, as I’m sure your eyes almost glazed over reading that first paragraph. It’s mostly just Garret talking to himself, and Agnes suddenly deciding she cares for no good reason. And that, the no good reason, is the third reason I rewrote the issue. It’s important that Agnes and Cass don’t have enough to get to Vegas, so finding the right excuse was thematically crucial.
So I thought of the rewrite, where Agnes blows up at Garret for being a creep towards her instead. The emotional rise of her indignation boiling over and getting the better of her while she’s talked down to and objectified by Garret as he holds the purse strings was way more suspenseful and interesting, and of course her deciding to punch him out and walk is a much more compelling sacrifice and character moment than the original script’s random act of kindness. This new script also manages to foreground her transness in a way I prefer to never pass up (and believe me, I’ve gotten more than a few James Garrets in my Twitter DMs in my time).
The tricky part about the new script was adequately conveying what happened without showing it, because the smash cut to the outside of the Wrangler is a lot more effective than showing the actual attack. It’s a somber, frustrating, miserable moment for Agnes, by the end of the issue the momentary catharsis of cleaning Garret’s clock is already gone, so omitting the image of the punch itself is intentional. In the first rewrite, Agnes was even more cagey about what happened in the Wrangler, but too little detail and it sounded like she just murdered him. Having Agnes state that she doesn’t want to take money from him, and coloring a little blood on her knuckles, lets it read better without holding the hand too much.
So never let it be said that the first draft is always the best draft...I find myself rereading my master script document often and making changes and revisions where they’re needed, especially since so many scripts like this one are written a very long time in advance.
On a lighter note, it’s good to be back! It’s been so long since I’ve completely drawn and colored an issue myself that I worried about whether I could still handle it. Really happy with how this issue came out, so I think I certainly still can. And more are on the way!
Also, the old Mexican woman in the group shot on the second page is Emilia Vasquez, a character created by @socksual-innuendos who would absolutely be chatting up Beatrix Russell in this or any given canon. It’s hard to work in cameo appearances like this because of how few group shots normally come up in IKROAH, but we’ll be in Freeside a while yet so maybe we’ll get more yet.
Original Pencils (click for full size)
This was a really fun issue to pencil. The layout was simple but really gave me a lot to work with in terms of pose and expression, and it gave me the opportunity for a rare crowd shot where I get to draw a bunch of different characters at once. There’s also a lot of close-ups, especially on the second page, where I got to flex more of my technical drawing ability (look at Agnes’ teeth! That whole sequence was just “fun with render distance”). You can see a few spots where I left myself blanks to Frankenstein complete panels together later, on the pages where repetition was artistically important. That’s the one thing really tricky about drawing in pencil on paper...there’s no copy-and-pasting and no layering. Everything’s gotta be as-is, so I plan ahead for what I can do digitally.
I also neglected a lot of detailed backgrounds in this issue intentionally. Inspired by Shrimp’s lovely guest art on the previous issue, I wanted to experiment with much more pop-art backgrounds that are more of an “abstract compositional artistic gestalt” on the page as opposed to every panel being a realistic camera-shot. In short, that meant I was fooling around with the juxtaposition of different colors to convey mood, and was more concerned with looking interesting as opposed to looking realistic and deep. Whether to draw the entire background as-is is something I always deliberate on with each panel because there’s a nagging part of me that thinks gradient or simple backgrounds is a lazy cop-out (and sometimes it can be) but I really like how I utilized the colored backgrounds here, especially with how they complement the tone shift on the third page, which doesn’t have the pop-color backgrounds at all.

INT. THE ATOMIC WRANGLER CASINO, a dimly-lit dive where one half of its sibling proprietorship JAMES GARRET is behind the bar, grinning wide.
JAMES: Hey! There’s my favorite headhunter! You get the talent I asked for?
In front of the bar is AGNES SANDS, hands in her pockets, head turned back towards three people—well, two people and one robot—behind her. They are OLD BEN, the ghoul BEATRIX RUSSELL, and FISTO.
OLD BEN: Hello.
BEATRIX: Hiya.
FISTO: NEW USER WARRANTY AGREEMENTS ARE AVAILABLE.
FISTO looms over AGNES as GARRET continues.
JAMES: Thank God. If we didn't get that sexbot before long, management would have been terribly upset.
AGNES: Aren’t you management?
JAMES: Well, yes, but what I mean is that it's bad for business to not be meeting my needs. Speaking as management, I mean. My need to meet the needs of our clientele.
AGNES: ...right. Just pay me.
JAMES: Of course, of course.
Beat. JAMES keeps grinning, eyeing AGNES while she awkwardly waits.
AGNES: Well?
JAMES: You know, I’ve been thinking—you’ve already gone through the trouble of recruiting some very special talent for the Wrangler...and in the process, I just couldn't help but notice your particular...talents.
As JAMES continues his pitch, AGNES realizes where he’s going with this. He’d better not be going where she thinks he’s going with this.
JAMES: I mean—a leather domme, an old smooth talker, and, uh, Fisto...as you can see, we get a lot of niche requests—
He’s going there. AGNES interrupts, seething.
AGNES: Give. Me. My money. James.
JAMES: Listen, what I'm trying to say is that if you need money, there's a lot more I'd—that is, you could be making here.
JAMES continues, oblivious to AGNES’ mounting offense.
JAMES: I'm telling you Agnes, there's a lucrative local market here for just the kind of experience that you can provide! Believe me, I'd know. You're a little dinged up, and older, to be fair, so we're not talking premium rates or anything...but you still wouldn't believe what people would pay here for just fifteen minutes with a—
EXT. ATOMIC WRANGLER, nighttime. Neon signs and streetlights bask the streets of FREESIDE in a warm gold glow. ROSE OF SHARON CASSIDY leans against a streetlight pole just outside the casino.
After a moment, AGNES exits the Wrangler.
CASS: Took you long enough. I wanna get out of here and see the strip already.
AGNES continues trudging past CASS, into the empty street.
AGNES: Come on. I don’t have the money.
CASS: What!? What do you mean you don't, did that asshole not pay us?
AGNES rubs her knuckles, a chunky bloodstain already fading from her right leather glove.
AGNES: No. And he's not going to. And I don't want him to. We'll have to get the money somewhere else, that's all.
AGNES continues her march away from the Wrangler while CASS remains against the streetlight pole, aghast.
CASS: Somewhere else...? Agnes!...but then how are we—Agnes! Agnes, god damn it, what did you do? God damn it!

Part 33: Contradictions
The Magnus Archives was a horror podcast. It is now completed. Many of the show’s mysteries were never explained on the show. I intend to explain them. Spoilers for the show, but also spoilers if you wanna solve these mysteries yourself.
In Burnt Offering in the middle of February 2009 Jason North is the one that interrupts Gertrude’s protective circle.
In Infectious Doubts, on 2nd of February 2009 Gertrude and Arthur talk about the protective circle already having been disrupted.
So how can they talk about something that hasn’t happened yet?
In infectious Doubs Gertrude says she killed Eugene Vanderstock about 2 weeks earlier. So circa 19th January 2009.
In the same episode John says Eugene disappeared late 2009. And he gets information from the Eye that Eugene’s head is still alive and in pain.
Maybe Gertrude was just inaccurate when she says she killed Eugene, but the time difference is still weird.
In the Man Upstairs in October 22 2007 Toby Carlisle is found dead.
In Meat, in October 2008 the Flesh attempted their ritual. Gertrude says this about it: “Tom Haan might be a bit more of a problem, as it looks like he also survived, but I’m hopeful he has been weakened enough by this failure to not be an issue in the near future. Hopefully, he’ll fade away or burn out as they tend to when robbed of their purpose. Still, I should keep a watch on him in case of any erratic behavior that might lead to complications. Also worth watching out for any… additional esoteric fallout from the ritual attempt, like that Carlisle boy down in Wandsworth.”
This suggests Toby Carlisle died because he was weakened by the failure of the ritual. But why did he die before the ritual happened?
In the Librarian Leitner says Gertrude had had three assistants, all coming to an unpleasant end. In Curiosity we learn that Gertrude had had five assistants, all coming to an unpleasant end. Her five assistants were Michael Shelley, Eric Delano, Emma Harvey, Fiona Law and Sarah Carpenter. We learned that Michael was Gertrude’s assistant in Dust to Dust. We learned that Eric was Gertrude’s assistant in Bloody Mary. It is implied Emma was Gertrude’s assistant in Bloody Mary. Curiosity is the only episode where Sarah and Fiona are mentioned as Gertrude’s assistants.
In Cheating Death John says Fiona Law died in 2003 following complications from a liver transplant. In Curiosity John says that Fiona Law finds a coffin, implying she is either killed by it or trapped in the Buried.
Quote from Curiosity about Sarah Carpenter: “She [Emma] even convinced Sarah to stay inside an old man’s house, desperate to see her eaten by a hungry door, but was again disappointed”. This happens when Sarah was Gertrude’s assistant.
Quote from A Sturdy Lock “When this was originally logged, apparently we did send a then-member of the research staff, one Sarah Carpenter, to take some readings of the house. Apparently, she felt there was little enough danger to justify an overnight vigil at the place…”
This seems to be the same event with Sarah staying at the Mckenzie home. But in A Sturdy Lock Sarah works in the research department. (Research is a separate department, as we learn in Binary. Tim complains that he was happier working for research than in the archives.) So Sarah was not Gertrude’s assistant at the time.
So why does the information in Curiosity contradict the rest of the show? Fiona is only mentioned in two episodes, and basically all we learn about her in Cheating Death is how she died. Sarah is only mentioned in two episodes and basically all we learn about her in A Sturdy Lock is that she worked in research. So the contradictions must be deliberate. An important point: In Curiosity John gets all the information about the assistants directly from the Eye.
In Panopticon on the 20th March 2015 Elias shoots and kills Gertrude. In The Uncanny Valley on the 4th of April 2015 Gertrude Robinson commits a statement to tape. How can Gertrude be alive after she died?
Looking at all these contradictions, there is only one conclusion we can draw: Gertrude Robinson is a time traveler.
Gertrude has read the statements of Father Burroughs and Ivo Lensik and noticed the time travel. (see Part 20 and Part 21 for more on this). She used the rift at Hill Top Road to travel in time. She wants to keep the time travel a secret. That’s why she hid the second half of Burroughs' statement in the next folder. If you just read either of the halves it is harder to notice the time travel. You won’t know that Burroughs thinks his arrest happened only a few days after visiting Hill Top Road.
I don’t know how many times Gertrude traveled in time. Trying to make sense of how many timelines there are, and which came first is probably impossible. Gertrude must have brought some statements back with her. So some statements are from different timelines and that’s why they don’t make sense.
After Gertrude traveled back in time there would have been two of her. Hence she can be alive after she was shot.
In Connected Annabelle says some fears exist in an eternal moment. In Last Words John says the eye is “the most unwise of all the [fears], forever seeking and consuming knowledge that it could not comprehend.” I think the Eye doesn't understand time travel. When it gives information to Jonathan, like in Curiosity, the Eye doesn’t understand that it happened in another timeline.
Probably Gertrude gets help from Agnes to time travel. In Curiosity we hear that Gertrude and Agnes only met once, but again that’s information from the Eye, so it’s from a different timeline.
Given that Curiosity describes a different timeline, I think the bald man burning on the inside which explodes and kills Sarah might have been Diego Molina.
In Part 27 I say how the Distortion terrorizes Paul McKenzie after the Distortion becomes Michael. And in Curiosity we learn that Sarah investigates the McKenzie home while Gertrude and Michael Shelley are on their trip where Michael Shelley becomes the Distortion. I think this means the timeline in Curiosity is also not the original timeline, but one created by the Distortion’s time travel.

1500-1599 Recap Part 24:
Chaos reigned for a little while but then Simon and Anthony had their birthdays which made things slightly easier.
It was no surprise that Simon and Jamila got married very quickly partly though because there was not all that much room in the house. They moved into the Watson family home.

hey! so in honor of good omens’ 30th anniversary and the drama’s 1st anniversary, here’s something i’ve been working on and off for about a year now...
presenting our side, a good omens story playlist!
i was inspired after coming across so many fantastic songs that work for aziraphale and crowley (many from listening to other peoples’ playlists, actually) and i thought it would be interesting to recount their entire journey through those songs. my goal was to make it feel like you were listening to the story just by listening to the playlist.
you can listen to the playlist on spotify or youtube! track list, lyric links, and story markers are under the cut.
special thanks to @rcmclachlan, @askazicro, and other good omens playlist makers for helping me discover many of these songs. i’m also including their playlists/tags under the cut if you wanna check out even more songs! also thank you to thomas ginnona for some classic rock consultation.
extra special thanks to my fantastic friend @humananalytica for helping me this entire time i’ve been working on this, sending me songs to listen to, helping bounce off ideas and give a second opinion every time i pester her, beta-ing, and for just in general being someone i can share my love of good omens with.
i’ve worked really hard on it so i’d be delighted if y’all can give it a listen! thank you very much!! m(_ _)m

there was a post i saw earlier that says 'even people full of love and light have dark days' do you think you could write somethng abt how esme and carlilse cope individiually +as a couple?trying to be there for each other because lets be real they know each other like the back of their hands over time they just love each other that much maybe he gives her space- sometimes she just needs to be in her art studio for days on end. he always replenishes her supplies, leaving them at the door quietly
“How do I help her?” Carlisle asked, practically pleading with the boy. He wasn’t one to ask of people’s thoughts, believing that it wasn’t his place to invade another’s privacy in such a way.
This, however, was different. Esme’d had something of a flashback a few days earlier. He wasn’t sure exactly what had caused it— the whole night was chaotic. A thunderstorm ravaged the entire town and then he had argued with Edward. He didn’t want to invade her space but the knowledge that she was up in the spare bedroom turned art studio all alone was too much. He needed to help her, he couldn’t just sit back and allow her to suffer alone.
“You can’t.” Edward told him, crossing his arms over his chest as he sat on the living room sofa. “Just leave her be.”
“She’s hurting.”
“She is.”
“There has to be something I can do. I— she seems to enjoy my company.”
“You can’t do anything, Carlisle. Just let her be.”
“I have to-”
Edward practically growled in frustration. “You know what? Go ahead. By all means, go burst into her room after she’s spent the night reliving all of the times she was violated as a human. I’m sure it’ll do wonders for her.”
Carlisle’s heart ached for her, looking toward the staircase she disappeared up the night before.
After a moment, he looked at Edward. “I’m making a run into town. Just— if she needs anything..”
“I know.”
Less than an hour later, the doctor hesitantly approached the door of her bedroom turned studio. He could hear the sound of her brush against the paper.
“Esme,” He eventually said. “I’m leaving some paint out here. I figured you’d be running low.”
“Thank you.” She told him through the door.
Weeks later, Carlisle was at his breaking point. He’d never tell her that, of course, but she knew him well. She hadn’t been living with them all that long but she could read her favorite doctor like a book.
Esme crept up to his office, leaning against the doorframe as she watched him. He was at his desk with his head in his hands. Although she knew he could sense her presence, he did not lift his head.
“Do you want to talk about it?” She asked him.
Seconds ticked by before he spoke up. “A young woman came in today— she’d been shot and I couldn’t save her. I tried but it was no use.”
Eventually, Esme found herself sitting on the doctor’s desk in front of him. She listened as he spoke, offering comforting words and reaching out to take his hand in both of hers.
It struck her that he’d never been able to vent like that before. She knew there wasn’t much talking in the house before she came along and before Edward— Carlisle has been alone for centuries.
He spoke softly, the sound slightly strained as he unloaded years and years of grief.
Years later, the two of them were wrapped up in grief at the loss of a friend. It wasn’t often they befriended a human in such a way but Agnes had been special.
The kind old woman seemed to sense what they were without ever saying it, without treating them like monsters. She would speak endlessly with Carlisle about the Edwardian era in which she grew up and spend hours with Esme in the garden behind her house. She taught Esme how to make her family recipes so that they may live on forever.
When she’d died, it was unexpected. She was old, of course, but seemingly healthy. She’d had so much spirit and life within her that the vampire couple seemed to forget about her mortality.
“I can’t believe she’s gone.” Esme whispered, her voice wavering as Carlisle tightened his arm around her.
“Neither can I.” He replied just as quietly, pressing a kiss to her hair and breathing in her scent for comfort when she turned to bury her nose against his neck.
The two of them had been laying together on the small loveseat in their shared office for hours, silently reflecting on what the world had lost.

On 16th of June 1338 the Siege of Dunbar ended.
An excellent tale of Black Agnes, a medieval strong Scottish woman, as usual dates vary a wee bit with these posts.
Called Black because of her jet-black hair, dark eyes and sallow complexion, Agnes was a remarkable woman who defended her home against England’s attacks, and in doing so roused the country to fight for Independence.
The feats of Agnes are the stuff of legend, and centre on a five-month period in 1338 when she almost single-handedly stood up to an English invasion force besieging her home, Dunbar Castle, and sent it homeward to think again. It was one of the turning points of Scotland's Second War of Independence and greatly boosted morale among the Scottish resistance at the time.
The early part of the Second War can be seen as a civil war between the forces loyal to the rightful king, David II, son of Robert the Bruce, and those who followed Edward Balliol, the usurper who had himself crowned King of Scots after his army – made up of English troops and the men of the “disinherited” nobles who had fought against King Robert and were trying to regain their confiscated lands – won the Battle of Dupplin Moor in 1332.
We have seen over the last two weeks how the Bruce loyalists, despite such reverses as the Battle of Halidon Hill, gradually forced Balliol’s forces back towards the Border, and the usurper’s own men were effectively defeated by 1336.
But Edward III of England was determined to preserve the counties and castle ceded to him by Balliol – a huge swathe of southern Scotland – and as of Ne’erday 1338, the English were still in control of large amounts of territory, roughly equivalent to the modern areas of the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, the Lothians and parts of Ayrshire and Lanarkshire.
Taking back those lands was vital for the Scots, as this really was now a war for independence – Edward III no longer made any pretence that he was acting in support of Balliol’s claim to the Scottish throne. He was out to conquer as much of Scotland as he could, although even he was not fool enough to attack the Highlands and islands. Eventually, though, he would have done, and if his vastly greater armies had been able to concentrate on conquering Scotland, the chances are that this country would have been subsumed into greater England – which some say we now are … The complication for Edward III, grandson of Edward Longshanks, was that he now faced war on two fronts. His preoccupation with France had led to the start of what would become the Hundred Years’ War when Scotland’s ally King Phillipe VI of France in 1337 confiscated the English-controlled territory of Gascony – a bitter blow to the English as the area was the source of the wine England drank.
Edward III needed men and money to pay his continental allies and mercenaries if he was going to take back Gascony, but he was still reluctant to abandon his holdings in Scotland. He decided on a full-scale invasion of the east coast from Berwick-upon-Tweed up to Edinburgh, concentrated on the most impressive fortification on that coast, Dunbar Castle – unless the castle could be taken there was always the danger of the Scots raiding from there to disrupt the English occupation of the Lothians.
This invasion was probably partly in response to the Scottish siege of Edinburgh Castle in November, which ended with an English victory and the castle occupied by English troops.
The best chronicle of that time was the one composed in Latin by monks at Lanercost Priory near Carlisle in Cumbria. I am quoting from Sir Herbert Maxwell’s translation of the Lanercost Chronicle.
Lanercost tells us that King Edward “sent my lord William de Montagu(e), Earl of Salisbury, the Earl of Gloucester, the Earl of Derby, three barons, de Percy, de Nevill and de Stafford, and the Earl of Redesdale, with 20,000 men … commanding them to besiege closely and effectively the castle of Dunbar, the castle of Earl Patrick, traitor alike to himself and the kingdom because it was irksome and oppressive to the whole district of Lothian.”
Here the monk shows his English patriotic bias, because Patrick, the Earl of Dunbar and March (partly in modern-day Northumberland) was no traitor – he had simply renounced the oath of loyalty to the English king that he had been forced to make. Nor can we be sure how many lords attacked Dunbar – the later Book of Pluscarden mentions Salisbury and the Earl of Arundel, so either way we can be sure it was Salisbury at the head of a large army.
Lanercost adds: “Dunbar Castle at that time was still in the hands of Earl Patrick, having been neither besieged nor taken by the English, the whole of the surrounding district of Lothian, although it was then in the King of England’s peace, paid each week one mark to those within the castle, more, it is thought, out of fear lest it should be forced from them than from love.”
The siege began on January 13, 1338. Earl Patrick was absent, probably with the Scottish loyal forces whose base was now at Dumbarton Castle, and left in charge was his wife Agnes.
It was not unusual for the wives of nobles to take charge of households when their husbands were away from home, but Agnes faced something few noblewomen had to confront – an invading army quite literally at her front door.
Agnes was the daughter of Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, the great friend and ally of Robert the Bruce who was the first Regent of Scotland for Robert’s son King David II. Her brother Thomas, the 2nd Earl, was killed while commanding a division at Dupplin Moor – in the space of a month she lost her father and brother, and her other brother John, the 3rd Earl of Moray, was captured by the English in 1335 while he was joint Regent of Scotland. The other Regent, Robert Stewart, the future King Robert II, sided with Balliol in 1335, which opened the way for Sir Andrew Murray to become Guardian of Scotland.
Agnes was married to Earl Patrick when she was just 12 and the marriage appears not to have been a happy one. They had no children, and Agnes was furious when Earl Patrick, who was also governor of Berwick, briefly switched sides to support Edward III – this may have been to stop the English king emulating his grandfather and sacking Berwick.
It also allowed Patrick to time to rebuild and fortify Dunbar Castle which stood – some of it still stands – on a promontory between the town and the Firth of Forth.
The Scots soon learned of Salisbury’s invasion, but there was nothing they could do except allow him to besiege the castle, then occupied by Agnes, her maids, her guardsmen including archers, and their women and families.
A later poem succinctly sums up Agnes’s attitude:
“Of Scotland’s King I haud my house, He pays me meat and fee, and I will keep my gude auld house, while my house will keep me.”
Lanercost records: “Close siege, therefore, was laid to the castle: those inside were surrounded by a deep trench, so that they could not get out; wooden houses were constructed before the gate, and pavilions or tents were set up for the lodging of the chief persons in the army.”
Salisbury had also hired two Genoese galleys to stop the castle being supplied from sea. The whole siege would cost more than £1000 per month – a vast sum in those days.
It was a brutal siege at first. There is confusion between fact and legend as to what happened, but there’s no doubt Salisbury’s forces assailed the walls of the castle with catapults throwing huge boulders.
The story goes that Agnes and/or her maids would go out to the walls and using their lace handkerchiefs would wipe the dust off the impact sites.
The Book of Pluscarden records: “She was a very wise and clever and wary woman. She indeed laughed at the English and would, in the sight of all, wipe with a most beautiful cloth the spot where the stone from the engine hit the castle wall.”
While the siege was going on, the Guardian of Scotland, Murray, took every opportunity that he could to attack the English across the south of Scotland. It is recorded that several parties of reinforcements were attacked by the Scots under Murray and forced to return home.
Disaster struck when Murray fell ill and died, probably in late February or early March 1338, but still Agnes kept her doors barred.
The legends grew: Salisbury brought up a huge battering ram which was called “the sow”. Agnes calculated where and when it would attack and had the boulders that the English had lobbed at the castle turned around and sent down on the sow, smashing it to smithereens and sending the English troops running. “Behold a litter of pigs,” cried Agnes.
Provisioned for the winter, supplies were running low, but one of the leaders of the Scottish resistance, Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie, said he would get relief to Agnes. With 40 men, he commandeered a couple of fishing boats on the Forth and waiting until the galleys were out of sight, Ramsay landed on the rocks below the castle and fought his way in, bringing plenty food and supplies.
Agnes promptly sent some food to Salisbury because she knew he, too, was low on provisions, and then ostentatiously held a banquet to infuriate the watching English.
Salisbury was riding around the castle one day when a Scottish archer, named as William Spens, fired at him from distance – the arrow grazed Salisbury and pierced the chest of his adjacent man-at-arms. Montague said: “Agnes’s love-shafts go straight to the heart.”
Now the English broke all the rules of chivalry. They had Agnes’s brother John as a captive and threatened to hang him in front of the castle if she did not surrender. She told them that would only make her the Countess of Moray in her own right and even more powerful – in fact she was not in line to succeed John Randolph, but the English didn’t know that and spared the Earl.
Salisbury attempted to bribe his way in, but the gatekeeper was loyal to Agnes and she set a trap. As soon as Salisbury would pass the first gate, the portcullis would be lowered, trapping him. But one of his soldiers, named by Pluscarden as Coupland, spotted the trap and threw the Earl backwards, while Coupland was captured.
Enough was enough. Word came to Salisbury that Edward III would be landing an army in France in July and on June 16, 1338, he abandoned the siege of Dunbar and went to fight in France. Agnes’s final words to Salisbury are supposed to have been: “Adieu, adieu, my Lord Montague.”
The rest of Agnes’s life is somewhat lost to history but her story raced around Scotland and England and a ballad was soon being sung that put these words in Salisbury’s mouth: “She kept a stir in tower and trench, that brawling boisterous Scottish wench; Cam’ I early, cam’ I late, I found Agnes at the gate.”

Repentance tower on Trailtrow Hill, built in 1565 by John Maxwell.
The 16th century was rife with border warfare and the English had captured Dumfrieshire forcing the locals to become 'assured Scots' with their pledge of allegiance secured by delivering hostages. One of these Scots was John, Master of Maxwell. Maxwell wished to marry Agnes Herries, but in order to do so he would have to betray the English... which is exactly what he did at the Battle of Durisdeer.
The defeated English army retreated to Carlisle Castle and executed all but one of the fifteen Maxwell hostages for his treachery. By the blood of his kin, he had won his bride, lands and title.
To keep a watchful eye over the Solway, the new Lord Herries built Repentance Tower upon Trailtrow Hill, helping keep Scotland safe, but also serving as a monument to the hostages who had sacrificed their lives and a memorial of his remorse for breaking his oath.
Inscribed above the door, flanked by a bird and scroll, is the word REPENTANCE. The stone was likely reused from a chaple that once stood in it's place. Another story states that the tower was built as compensation to the church, for using stone from the old Trailtrow Chapel to help build Hoddom Castle.
