Valentine smoothed down the bell of her dress for what had to be the one hundreth time. It was foolish, she knew, but she couldn't keep her hands stiĺl.

"If you keep pulling at that dress it will come apart." The familiar voice had her rolling her eyes.

She didn't bother to look up. It was becoming commonplace to find him stopping in before a show. She couldn't help a playful smile stealing onto her face.

"That'd be a real tragedy for you, wouldn't it?" She huffed, tugging at her waistline yet again.

A pair of gloved hands were on hers in seconds, ceasing her fidgets.

She took a quick breath in, eyes darting up to the looking glass to take in the animatronic looming behind her.

She placed her hands on his as he pulled her close, thumbs brushing soothing circles into her sides. He leaned down, ears cocked playfully.

"It would. I'd rather wait until after your show anyways." His voice was criminal.

The flush in Valentine's cheeks rose quickly. She smacked at one of the hands encircling her waist.

"Crickets, really!" Valentine scolded.

With a chuckle he brushed a kiss against the top of her head.

"You are going to be fine, my dear. Why so nervous?" He asked studying her in the mirror.

Valentine looked away, clasping her hands so as not to returning to fidgeting. She knew she should answer with a quip. Something clever and confident to banish his concern and her own anxiety but her smile wobbled all the same.

She ran a finger over the palm of her white evening gloves. The rough edges of the scar beneath the fabric felt hot despite that day being well behind her.

once again his gloved hand covered her own. A pained look stealing over his features, ears drooping. She forced a small laugh.

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to fret-" her words died on her tongue as he spoke her name.

Her real one.

It was still strange, him knowing her civilian name. Even knowing his, she still found herself refering to him as Crosshair in her mind.

Old habits ...

As he repeated her name once again, Valentine met his eyes in the mirror.

"Are you with me?" He turned her hand over in his.

"Yes, sorry. I guess it still feels strange to be going on stage after..." she let the thought go unfinished.

They both new what had been lost.

"You don't have to go out there if you don't want, limelight." His use of the familiar nickname had her smiling in ernest.

"No, I want to...I just need a minute." She took a breath and mentally lamented the loss of his warmth as withdrew.

"Look for me in the crowd." He said, turning with a nod.

"Always...thanks, Crickets." Valentine watch him go before steeling herself in the mirror.

The show must go on and at least she knew one of her biggest fans would be watching from the back.

Front row and center had never been his style, after all.

Joke aside, you remember when they used to promote Valentines's day with Robotnik and Stone, and simply saying that theses made "A beautiful friendship ?". Funny times. Love them though, best thing in both movies so far. Need more of them in the third one.
