Desert Portal | Desert Botanical Garden
Phoenix, AZ
This garden has matured since I last saw it; the palo verdes have created a natural archway over the entry walkway. It must be stunning in bloom.

Hakea lehmanniana
Hakea is an Australian genus in the Protea Family, with many species found in the winter-rainfall area in Western Australia. This is true of H. lehmanniana, which grows at the southwestern corner of the country. Its common name is the "blue hakea", but the color of the flowers varies from just slightly blue-tinged to quite blue. Our plant is a subtle blue-gray color that goes well with the blue-green color of the needle-like leaves - leaves that suggest a bough of a pine tree with especially long bluish needles. This shrub makes a great companion plant for bold sculptural plants like the Agave ovatifolia growing next to it.

Death Bloom underway at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
DES MOINES, Iowa- The flowers on the agave ovatifolia at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden are officially opening. Around a month ago, we first introduced you to the death bloom. This agave takes around 10-15 years to bloom and wen it does, it puts on a show. It’s 15-foot stem sprouted around two months ago, and the flowers started to open around a week ago. They open and wilt from the…

Agaves in bloom from a few weeks ago. Top are A. ovatifolia - third to last photo shows a honeybee on a leaf for scale. The flowers were covered in bees, wasps, flies and ants, and there were also foragers in between the leaves where pollen had fallen. The last two are of an A. americana that had a smaller spike emerging from somewhere below - maybe a pup? Very odd.

End of February
On this last day of February 2024, I will list some of my favorite Agaves. Agave. americana mediopicta aurea Agave parryi var huachucensis Agave ovatifolia Agave parryi var truncata Agave ‘Kissho Kan’ Agaves are easily gtown from seeds or pups. Obviously, seeds take a much longer time to deverlop, and with pups your efforts are very easily appreciated. these plants are definitely worth a…

Someone dumped this palm near a parking lot (perhaps thinking it was dead? Not wanting to deal with the cold damage?), but it's not dead, obviously, so it's mine now. A multi-trunked, minimally spined European fan palm. Might rehome it, it's rather large and would probably be happiest going straight into the ground.
Earlier today, I went to pick up some Brahea moorei seeds from a local grower who invited me to view the parent plant. His place is absolutely amazing - a massive collection of palms, cycads, cacti, Texas and Mexican natives. His yard also contained the tallest Texas mountain laurel I've ever seen - which is still not very tall at all by tree standards, mind you, but huge for the species, and single-trunked to boot. He also generously gave me some Agave ovatifolia pups and seeds from a variety of dasylirion called Zaragoza Blue Twister. All of these survived Snowpocalypse just fine, which is just what I'm looking for.
(I really love plant people. The internet can make you very cynical sometimes, but there's still tons of very generous enthusiasts out there, past all the gross consumerism.)
On top of all that, I ended up stumbling across a threatened Edwards Plateau endemic just off a heavily trafficked trail! Post forthcoming. The plant gods are really smiling on me today 😀
