As he worked, Sky couldn't help but admire his concentration. Despite the unsettling shadow the Hexcore cast over his face, Viktor seemed so human at that moment, so vulnerable. It was a paradox: the man she admired for his genius and dedication was now tending to her wounds with a tenderness she had never imagined.

Viktor removed the last shard and stood to fetch gauze and bandages from the first aid kit. The lab was a dangerous place, so they were always prepared for emergencies. This time, the kit was more useful than ever.

As he stepped away, the Hexcore, which had been glowing with its usual dim light, suddenly flared up and emitted an impossible sound, as if it came from another dimension. Viktor, having moved out of his position between the Hexcore and Sky, allowed the energy threads surrounding it to stretch toward Sky's blood mixed with the glass shards. Something in her blood had triggered a reaction.
