Preview for the next chapter of Ready Now:
Professor Layton had been forced out of his investigation. The Professor had been hurt, while he was already mourning for Claire. The Professor had never truly found closure after losing her.
But the Professor hadn’t locked himself away or lashed out at others. He had buried that despair deep down inside, gone out into the world, and dedicated his life to solving people’s problems.
People like Arianna and Tony, whose father’s death had been hushed-up as a suicide.

"I snuck out often as a child and teenager, covering my forehead in a worn, old headband. Never got along with the other Garlean kids, too stiff and uptight for me to make friends with. So I tried my luck in the lower side of the city, hiding who I really was from the Ala Mhigan kids. Didn't matter though, they figured me out pretty quickly. Most of them kept their distance...except two that didn't seem to care at all. Ashe and Denrick Harker were their names, brother and sister from an Ala Mhigan mining family. They were my only real friends here, made everything worth it for me for years. And yet at every turn I was told not to."
"But why? What makes them so different from us? They can laugh, they can cry, they have dreams, can get happy, be sad, everything. What made us different, what made us 'better' than them? No one would ever tell me why. Why were they the ones called 'savages' when we were the ones who thought of them as less than nothing? We were the ones who beat them on the streets, in broad daylight...and the people cheered for it. People were dying right in front of them, and no one cared. Even my own mother and father, my family, just told me to look the other way. To let the guards 'clean up the trash' and ignore them...that they didn't matter."
"Sometimes I get the urge to rip this damn eye out of my head, but what would that accomplish? It wouldn't bring them back, it wouldn't change what I am. So it stays, as a reminder. I don't like to remember, but I can't ever let myself forget. I can't bring them back, I can at least help set their home free...it's the least I can do. I don't care what happens to me after that, at least I'll know I did right by Ashe and Denrick one last time."

There's no plot beat more unsatisfying than a protagonist who is trying to escape the Cool Adventurous Setting for some reason. I get that it's sometimes realistic for them to do that but it's really difficult to root for someone or get emotionally invested in their success when their main goal is to get away from all the stuff you find interesting to watch/read about.
You get about the same frustrated feeling like when you're at a party and hitting it off with a person but the friend you're with is whining about wanting to go home.
#this brought to you by my reading Outlander for the first time#in the year of our lord 2024 after having zero interest in it back when it was the hot new thing#I actually don't like time travel/isekai/portal fantasy (all the same concept in different guises tbh)#but I saw that the second book is called Dragonfly in Amber and thought#THIS PERSON IS A DUNNETT FAN#so I started reading to investigate#(she is! I caught several references in the first couple of chapters so I googled it and she said that she is several times)#(tho tbh aside from a couple of random details and the premise being basically what if Will Scott was straight and got with y/n#they have very little in common)#anyway Outlander is a particularly dire instance of this trope because you spend the first two chapters#VERY LONG ones btw#setting up how boring Claire's life is not because it objectively is but because she personally is bored to death by every aspect of it

#new scotland yard#the come back#1972#lwt#classic tv#tony hoare#tony wharmby#john woodvine#john carlisle#barry warren#claire warren#kenneth cranham#betty romaine#kenneth colley#robert hartley#mark dowse#geoffrey morris#shelagh wilcocks#after a thoughtful and provocative opener‚ this second episode feels a little more run of the mill; a classic 'villain out for revenge on#those who put him away'. we do get a little bit of debate about the possibility or not of reform whilst imprisoned‚ but it's brief stuff#where the meat of the episode is just identifying and tracking down the 'bad guy' (a young Ken Cranham; similarly not enough#time is devoted to considering the mental health of his character and why exactly he has become dangerously violent during his time#inside...). one odd thing; the first episode sort of established Carlisle's character as having some socialist sympathies‚ putting him at#odds with the greyly impartial (but probably vaguely conservative‚ with a small c) Woodvine. weirdly‚ their politics appear to have#switched entirely here; Woodvine is reticent to demonise Cranham without solid proof of his involvement‚ expresses some sympathy#for his situation‚ whilst his subordinate Carlisle is now apparently in favour of the death penalty and dismisses the idea#of an insanity defence out of hand‚ sneering that it's a cop out abused by serial criminals. perhaps it's just that this is early days#and different writers are playing with these characters that aren't entirely nailed down yet‚ but it's a weird contrast to their respective#positions in the previous ep. Warren returns as Woodvine's journalist brother in law‚ so it looks like that's a recurring role#and poor Ken Colley gets rather underused as an informant (or grass as Woodvine puts it)

still thinking about it ( how claire was never vaccinated for t-p as once conquered her fear the virus adapted to her with little to no visible consequences, and how it was probably what kept her alive in alcatraz but she might not even be aware )
#for plot reasons she just had to sit there in agony for half movie while chris was mostly okay#which is wild to me but whatever suspension of belief i guess#claire suffered it the most because i believe while one virus was trying to make her die the other was keeping her alive#as it was designed to do so after all. especially while undergoing great mental and physical stress#you don't it see it much in the movie but in the manga claire's eyes strain in a gory way#which is also where i got my “one of claire's eyes is permanently damaged after DI due to stress” headcanon from#i wonder if dylan was aware of how t-p activates and whether claire has “powers” like natalia#in the off chance that her being turned to that extent on alcatraz counts as a death for t-p#my mind says capcom doesn't give a fuck my heart says claire has reached superhuman status without knowing it gjhj
