Because I feel like it.
Yellow sky? Bare footed characters? Mostly a mess? Over exaggerating some of the Hispanic features. I saw the first episode, and it was just poorly written in general. And what mother calls their son "cochinada." Roughly translates to dirty or trash.
What's good Latino/Hispanic representation?
Colombian 🇨🇴
In the Caribbean region of Colombia, they light up candles and lanterns on December 8, before sunrise. So the candle giving them magic was a wonderful detail. Generational trauma is a thing for us Latinos, and this film handled it in a healthy and matuer manner. And I love how they didn't shy away with how Spaniards attacked and colonized latin lands.
Mexicans 🇲🇽
Yes, us Mexicans love death. 🤣 But hey, I was always taught to respect death, La Muerte, and our ancestors. So, it makes sense that many Mexican films talk about death. But I also like that Maya and the Three have Aztec, Mayan, and Incan mythology. Natives to Mexico.
Dominican Puerto Rican 🇩🇴🇵🇷
Luz mom is Dominican, and Luz dad is Puerto Rican. I appreciate a good interracial couple and a mixed child. Luz name also translates to light, and some Latinos are known for doing witch craft. Or at least knowledgeable about witches and demons, and no, we aren't evil. We just know how to handle this stuff. Plus, the owl has many meanings in Latino culture. To some, I believe the owl is a messenger of death and is telling everyone that death/danger is near.
Afro Latino. Puerto Rican 🇵🇷
I am a massive sucker for interracial couples and mixed kids because of this. I was working at a hispanic store as a cashier. This woman walks past me and starts talking to the bagger. The bagger has blond hair, blue eyes, and white skin. The bagger looks at me worried because she doesn't speak English. So brown skin, black hair, me has to tell the bagger that the lady wanted ice in Spanish. I then talked to the lady in English. Her reaction? "YOU SPEAK ENGLISH!" Same for a dark skinned man. So many people skip me and talk to him in English. He's Dominican, and he only spoke Spanish. I appreciate films that show Latinos in different skin types and features. We're not all brown. So yeah, the mass diversity in this film is just beautiful. And I love how they wrote Miles relationship with his parents. Realistic conflict and healthy communication. Not falling into toxic stereotypes.
Spainard Puss 🇪🇸 Mexican Kitty & Perrito 🇲🇽
Spaniards are considered Hispanic but not Latinos like Mexicans. And again, interracial couples for the win. And I love the realism in their romance that heals through healthy therapy. Many people see Mexicans as toxic, so having Perrito as a therapist and the one helping everyone emotionally, it's nice. Not every Mexican is toxic. And I love how you can tell their Spanish and Mexican even though their animals. Puss Spanish accent, Spanish actor, him being a ginger like some Spaniards, flamingo dancing, and gazpacho. Kitty, Mexican accent, Mexican actress, black fur/hair like most Mexicans, quinceañera, and I love how they gave her a luchador mask. Something that originates from Mexico. Also, my brother and I joke how we as Mexiacns can't swim and Kitty nearky drowns in the 1st film. 🤣 Perrito, he's a chihuahua with a Mexican actor. Enough said. I also want to say death is Brazilian because of his actor.
I don't know much about Spanish culture, but someone said the wishing star has a connection to Spanish culture. Is that true? If so, COOL! Because death is connected to Mexican culture. So, Dreamworks finding a way to combine Spanish and Mexican culture in one film is 100% magical.
There are many more, like Beverly Hills Chihuahua 🇲🇽. 🤣 That film is better than Primos. Emperor's New Groove, Peru 🇵, and Rio, Brazil 🇧🇷. Not Hispanic but Latino culture. But this post is getting long. Primos! A huge step down in Latino/Hispanic representation. Especially since we have so many good films and shows that have proper representation.

A confiança (The Confidence)
Olinda, Brazil - 2023
The Carnaval of Olinda, on the north east coast of Brazil, is a week of high energy and exuberance. Dancers and musicians perform in Blocos that progress slowly through the streets of the beautiful colonial era town. Thronged with thousands of revellers that as much a part of the show as they are the audience. This young woman was part of an afro-Brazilian Axé troupe, a music genre that originated in Salvador, Bahia.

I'm just waiting for the day radfems will be smart for once and finally realise that for trans women to get on women's sports they need to be on E. They need to have their testosterone and estrogen levels to be the same as perisex cis women.
And I'm waiting for the day they'll realise that this is not an advantage for trans women, but rather a disadvantage, because these bodies are gonna get significantly weaker, and it's the same case as the extinction of the nanthertals: they didn't have enough strength to their bodies. A body that needs/was originally made for nutrient X cannot take nutrient B if the person doesn't want to get weaker. Same thing is for bodies originally testosterone driven taking estrogen hrt.
*Sigh* Sometimes I wonder if my smartness comes from my gender queerness or my super cool afro indigenous brazilian latino ancestry. /j
Honestly I had no idea about most of this 😭😭 I figured you had to be an Estrogen, but I didn’t know I had to be the same levels as a perisex cis woman. Very fascinating ! /gen

Afro-Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino is suturing the past to the present
Centering Black feminism and anti-racism, Paulino’s work is being celebrated from New York’s High Line to the Tate Modern
In 1865, the French photographer Augusto Stahl made images of a naked Black woman in Rio de Janeiro. They show the unidentified woman – Stahl didn’t bother to record her name – facing the camera, in profile, and from behind, in a sequence that inevitably recalls police mugshots.
Stahl was working for the Swiss-American biologist Louis Agassiz, a professor of natural history at Harvard University, who had commissioned photos of “pure” Black people to support his racist theories, such as the idea that miscegenation would lead to inferior human beings.
“The images affected me deeply, but I didn’t know what to do with them,” said the Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino, 57, who recalls first encountering them while reading a book in 2011. “I took a photo of the page and put it in a drawer.”
About a year and a half later, she transformed it into a work of art, Assentamento, named after the altars of Afro-Brasilian religions. The photographs, printed life-size on fabric, are adorned with embroidery of a heart, a foetus and roots. Each one is then cut into four parts and “sutured” together – with some misalignment, to represent the psychic and physical scars borne by generations of black Brazilians. Each picture is flanked by two mounds of paper clay arms piled up like firewood to symbolize the way Black bodies were consumed as fuel for Brazil’s economic growth.

TW: Incest, child death, insinuation of animal abuse, graphic violence, gore, self-harm, religion themes, body horror, unnerving imagery, cannibalism, suicide, infant and neonatal suffering, psychological trauma, domestic violence.
"Earth needs to be fed, and the feeding is our children."
Identification: Cousin Mariana
Responsible Researcher: Dr. Öctavio Kalev
ANM #: ANM-691-XK
Classification: Nightmare 💀 | Uncontained ❌️
Type of Anomaly: Rural, entity, cult, reality-bender
Type of Damage: Manipulative, mental, genetic
Confinement: Due to ANM-691-XK ability to appear at various religious terrains and avoid all tracking and surveillance, direct containment is currently deemed unfeasible. Research teams must focus on minimizing the impact of ANM-691 events by identifying and briefing potential targets. All major religious gatherings in the Maranhão region, especially those involving Umbanda and Afro-Brazilian traditions, are to be monitored closely for signs of ANM-691 appearances. Mobile Task Force ("Cult Watchers") are responsible for providing cover stories and memory suppression for civilians affected by ANM-691 events.
Families within Maranhão, Codó, and neighboring regions involved in religious practices of Afro-descendant origin must be discreetly briefed on ANM-691 possible appearance, though care must be taken not to provoke suspicion. Any attempt to disrupt a ritual or event involving ANM-691 must be undertaken only under extreme circumstances, as previous efforts have resulted in uncontrollable spread of anomalous effects.
Any family members exhibiting abnormal behavior following ANM-691 events are to be evaluated and isolated if necessary.
Description: ANM-691-XK appears as a teenage woman of northeastern Brazilian descent, specifically resembling a Maranhão local. Her appearance includes long black hair adorned with a red ribbon, dark eyes, and a white dress that complements her curves and unsettling charm. Around her neck hangs a golden trident necklace, symbolizing her deep connection with local Afro-Brazilian religious customs, particularly Umbanda and related practices. Despite her resemblance to an ordinary young woman, ANM-691 appearance is always accompanied by a profound unease.
ANM-691 appears spontaneously at family and community religious events within Maranhão and Codó regions, often integrating herself seamlessly into proceedings. Known to attendees as "Cousin Mariana," she exhibits a playful but crude demeanor, which is typically tolerated by those present. Her presence at an event is initially met with normalcy; however, her influence becomes more apparent as the events progresses.
The effects of ANM-691 are primarily psychological but manifest physically over time. Individuals exposed to her influence, especially children, experience lasting emotional and physical trauma. Although adults are somewhat resistant, the longer ANM-691 remains present, the more susceptible they become. Families affected by ANM-691 display increased violence, mistrust, and disintegration of social structures.
Children are particularly vulnerable, with multiple documented cases of severe injury and, in some cases, death following ANM-691 encounters. Interviews with survivors of ANM-691 events often reveal deeply disturbing memories that they regard with an inexplicable sense of fondness, referring to ANM-691 as "Mariana," their "beloved cousin."
All attempts to monitor, track, or otherwise contain ANM-691-XK have failed. Surveillance footage either corrupts or shows ANM-691 appearing and disappearing between frames, as though she phases in and out of existence. Attempts to implant tracking devices have resulted in their malfunction, and personnel attempting to follow ANM-691 have lost sight of her within moments.
Addendum 691-XK-A:
Following the ████ Incident, where ANM-691-XK appearance at a large Umbanda initiation resulted in the deaths of five children and seven adults, additional containment protocols have been proposed. These include limiting the size of public religious gatherings in Maranhão, though local resistance to such measures has been significant. Studies are ongoing to determine whether ANM-691 can be bound to a specific location or event using her connection to Afro-Brazilian spiritual practices.
[[collapsible show="+ Marine-Level Event (Initiation Rite)" hide="- Close Event"]]
During Marine-Level events, ANM-691-XK appears at initiation rites for children within Umbanda and other Afro-Brazilian religious ceremonies. These rites are traditionally meant to mark the spiritual awakening of young initiates, but ANM-691 presence warps these gatherings into grotesque rituals. Families perceive her involvement as normal, though her participation deviates heavily from standard religious practices.
The Marine-Level event begins as expected, with preparations involving offerings, prayers, and chants typical of Umbanda rituals. ANM-691 takes on the role of a spiritual guide, often positioning herself as a close relative of the child being initiated. She will actively participate in the proceedings, assuming a prominent and authoritative role, much like a third parent or godparent.
Once the formal initiation begins, a live pig is brought forth. ANM-691 directs the ceremony, encouraging the family and priests to follow her altered version of the ritual. The pig is decapitated in front of all those present, with its blood collected in a ceremonial bowl. ANM-691 takes the severed head and places it at the feet of the initiate, smiling as though this is a vital part of the ritual. The pig's body is then skinned meticulously, and the hide is handed to the child, who is made to wear the still-warm skin as a cloak. Witnesses describe this moment as "sacred" and believe the child is being blessed by ancestral spirits.
Following this, ANM-691 encourages the priests and family members to proceed with the next stage of the initiation: the symbolic "rebirth" of the child. The child's skin, starting from the shoulders, begins to slough off in a manner that mimics molting. This skin removal happens while the initiate remains conscious, but those present do not register any screams of pain or discomfort from the child, believing the event to be a divine transformation.
The child's skin is removed in a single piece and is then passed around among the family members. In a grotesque twist, ANM-691 initiates a ritualistic feast where the child’s skin is divided into portions and eaten by those present, particularly the parents and close family members. Throughout this process, ANM-691 smiles and laughs, treating the scene with a crude, unsettling humor, further reinforcing the idea that this cannibalistic act is a normal part of the initiation rite.
Once the skin has been consumed, ANM-691 anoints the initiate with the pig's blood, painting sacred symbols on their exposed flesh. Despite the trauma inflicted, the child remains conscious and eerily calm, as though anesthetized by ANM-691 presence. The initiate, now wearing the pig’s skin as a cloak, is paraded before the gathering as "reborn," signifying their spiritual connection to their ancestors and the forces ANM-691 represents.
The child’s chances of survival following the ritual are drastically reduced. Within six months, over 80% of children subjected to ANM-691 initiation die, typically from infection or organ failure, though medical exams fail to provide conclusive causes. Survivors exhibit significant physical scarring and psychological trauma, often developing personality disorders resembling severe Cluster B traits (borderline personality disorder, psychopathy, and narcissism).
Initiates who survive show signs of increased aggression, cruelty, and obsession with rituals involving pain or sacrifice. Many develop a fascination with death, mutilation, and cannibalism. Without intervention, these children tend to harm themselves, sexual abuse animals, and exhibit violent tendencies toward others. They frequently join radical groups or engage in antisocial behavior.
The ritual also takes a devastating toll on the child’s family. Parents involved in the event become sterile and are psychologically compromised, with many descending into deep despair. Reports of suicide, particularly by hanging or drowning, are common within five years of a Marine-Level event. Families that survive the immediate aftermath of the ritual experience increased conflict, often leading to domestic violence or abandonment of remaining children.
Individuals not directly participating in the ritual but present during the event are also affected. Stillbirths increase significantly in the months following an event, and many who were able to conceive prior to ANM-691 involvement become incapable of carrying pregnancies to term. In some cases, couples have been observed abandoning their infants, leaving them to die from neglect.
The effects of ANM-691-XK are not limited to the immediate ritual. In regions where ANM-691 has been reported, communities experience higher-than-average occurrences of unexplained deaths, failed harvests, and natural disasters. Additionally, ANM-691 seems to have a predilection for cicadas and other cicada-infested areas. Children exposed to the sound of cicadas post-ritual experience severe anxiety, vomiting, and headaches. Many develop violent tendencies in response to the various insects song, leading to catastrophic outbursts in local communities.
Witnesses and survivors of ANM-691-XK initiation rites are left with fragmented memories. While most cannot recall the explicit details of the event, they express a strange fondness for "Cousin Mariana," referring to her as a benevolent figure despite her role in the horrific ritual.
[[collapsible show="+ Null-Level Event (Family Visit)" hide="- Close Event"]]
During Null-Level events, ANM-691-XK manifests at family gatherings such as routine visits or smaller family celebrations, typically in more intimate, domestic environments. In these cases, ANM-691 is viewed by all present as "Cousin Mariana," a close relative with whom the family is comfortable. Her demeanor at these events is playful and affectionate, but quickly warps into something far more sinister.
At the outset of a Null-Level event, ANM-691 engages with the family members in what seems like typical familial affection. She hugs her cousins, often kissing them on the cheeks or forehead, always pushing the boundaries of normal family behavior but doing so with such charm that no one questions her actions. As the visit progresses, her affection takes on an explicitly sexual tone, particularly targeting cousins of reproductive age, although she does not limit her interactions to them. Under ANM-691-XK's influence, the family becomes oblivious to the inappropriate nature of these actions and will engage in or condone incestuous behavior.
Over time, ANM-691 influence ensures that sexual relationships between close family members occur, often during or immediately following her visits. She will encourage or directly participate in these acts, drawing the family into a complex web of incestuous dynamics. Family members perceive these acts as natural expressions of love, even though they result in horrifying consequences.
Within months of ANM-691 visit, children born to family members involved in these unions exhibit severe and fatal genetic disorders, the most notable being Harlequin-type ichthyosis (referred to colloquially as "Harlequin Baby Syndrome"). These children are born with their skin peeled away, leaving their underlying muscle and veins exposed. Their bodies are covered in thick, plate-like scales that crack and bleed constantly. Such infants are in extreme pain from the moment of birth, but their families, under the influence of ANM-691, do not recognize the suffering. Instead, the children are regarded as "blessed" or "special," often celebrated within the family despite the fact that these infants typically die within days or weeks of birth.
When the children do survive past infancy, they exhibit disturbing behaviors, much like those seen in other ANM-691-related events. Children who survive into adolescence display severe Cluster B personality disorders, often exhibiting extreme cruelty toward animals and younger family members. They frequently become fixated on the idea of self-mutilation and cannibalism, reenacting elements of the traumatic events that took place during their conception and birth. These children are often shunned by wider society due to their appearance and violent tendencies, which are further reinforced by ANM-691 continued influence.
ANM-691-XK involvement at Null-Level events leaves deep psychological scars on family members. Most will lose the ability to form healthy romantic relationships. Many family members, particularly the parents of afflicted children, develop severe depression and anxiety. This despair is exacerbated by the fact that all married individuals who were present at the event are rendered permanently sterile, regardless of their involvement in the incestuous acts. Even couples not directly participating in ANM-691 sexual manipulations find themselves unable to conceive after her visit.
Suicide is common among those affected. The parents of children born with Harlequin-type ichthyosis are particularly prone to taking their own lives, often within two to five years of the event. Some choose to drown themselves, following what they describe as "Cousin Mariana’s song", an eerie melody ANM-691-XK is sometimes heard humming during her visits. This song is said to invoke feelings of guilt, confusion, and helplessness, pushing family members toward self-destruction.
Once ANM-691 departs, the family will often remain under her influence for years, unable to recognize the full horror of what has occurred. In some cases, family members will continue to engage in incestuous relationships, repeating the cycle of genetically malformed births and psychological disintegration. As time passes, those who survive become reclusive, avoiding outside contact, and retreating further into the distorted familial dynamics ANM-691 fostered. Any attempts to intervene are met with hostility, as the family clings to the belief that "Cousin Mariana" is a beloved relative who has done nothing wrong.
In rare instances where outsiders witness the aftermath of a Null-Level event, they report scenes of utter devastation: infants writhing in agony, children engaging in self-harm, and adults lost in a haze of dissociation and despair. Despite the clear signs of suffering, no one within the family will seek help, as ANM-691 influence warps their perception of reality.
[[collapsible show="+ Scar-Level Event (Funeral Rite)" hide="- Close Event"]]
ANM-691-XK baby anatomy (Harlequin-type syndrome):
The Scar-Level event is the most destructive manifestation of ANM-691-XK, occurring exclusively at funerals within families that have been affected by prior appearances of Cousin Mariana. These events are marked by the introduction of a newly established cult-like devotion to ANM-691, whom the family now reveres as the embodiment of a twisted "Mother Nature." Any attempt to disrupt the Scar-Level event, or to prevent ANM-691 presence at a funeral, results in the individual becoming a part of the event. No known means exist to stop or prevent this event from unfolding once it has begun.
At the start of a Scar-Level event, ANM-691-XK will arrive at the funeral unannounced, seamlessly integrating herself as though she had been present all along. Family members and funeral attendees will not question her sudden appearance, even if they were actively trying to keep her away. As the funeral proceeds, ANM-691 will slowly assume control of the event, taking the place of the eulogizer regardless of whether one was scheduled to speak. Her eulogy will be a rambling, nonsensical speech, filled with praise for death, decay, and the "rebirth of nature." Despite the incoherence of her words, all those in attendance will listen attentively, enraptured by her voice.
As ANM-691-XK speaks, the closest relative of the deceased will approach the casket and retrieve a ceremonial knife. The knife, much like ANM-691, appears without explanation and vanishes after the event concludes. This family member will then make a deep cut on their own wrist, bleeding directly into the open casket. This act of self-exsanguination is carried out without hesitation or pain. One by one, all attendee, including children, will follow suit, using the same knife to bleed into the casket. Adults assist younger participants, ensuring that even the smallest children contribute to the blood ritual.
The casket, now filled with blood, becomes the centerpiece of the ritual. As more blood flows, ANM-691 speech begins to take on an almost hypnotic tone, and participants report hearing the rhythmic sound of cicadas in the background, despite there being no insects present. This auditory hallucination grows louder as the ritual progresses.
After all participants have bled into the casket, ANM-691-XK will approach it and vomit a mixture of blood, soil, decaying wood, and insects, most notably cicadas, into the coffin. The exact composition of this vomit varies slightly from event to event, but always includes elements symbolic of decay and rebirth, reinforcing the emerging worship of ANM-691-XK as a death-mother figure. Participants view this act as a sacred offering, praising "Mother Mariana" for her connection to the earth and the natural cycle of life and death.
Once ANM-691-XK has completed her offering, the deceased is lowered into the earth, along with the blood and vomit-filled casket. The burial proceeds as though nothing abnormal has occurred, and the family will speak of the funeral as a beautiful, spiritual experience, despite the horrific and grotesque nature of the ritual.
After the burial, the family will formally consecrate their newfound devotion to ANM-691-XK, transforming the event into the foundation of a nature cult. This cult, which they call the "Children of Mother Mariana," reveres ANM-691-XK as a goddess of death, decay, and rebirth. The cult’s beliefs are heavily influenced by naturalistic symbolism, particularly the cyclical processes of decomposition and regeneration.
During gatherings of this cult, the family will perform additional bloodletting rituals, often at the gravesites of their ancestors. Over time, these rituals escalate in intensity, with participants cutting deeper and bleeding more profusely in their attempts to honor ANM-691. Family members who survive the rituals without succumbing to their injuries will begin to exhibit severe psychological and physical changes. These changes include an increased obsession with death, blood, and decay, as well as the development of painful, rapidly spreading skin conditions resembling necrosis.
Children born after a Scar-Level event are almost universally afflicted with Harlequin-type ichthyosis, similar to those born following a Null-Level event. However, in Scar-Level events, the children’s conditions are far more severe.
The family will often care for these children with an unsettling level of devotion, viewing their constant pain as a necessary part of their worship. Over time, the cult begins to engage in ritualistic cannibalism, devouring the flesh of these children once they inevitably die from their condition. The consumption of the children’s bodies is seen as a final offering to ANM-691-XK, believed to bring the family closer to the goddess and ensure the continuation of their bloodline under her protection.
All participants of a Scar-Level event, much like in Null-Level and Marine-Level events, are rendered sterile. However, the psychological impact of a Scar-Level event is far more extreme. Over the course of months or years following the event, participants will experience vivid hallucinations of ANM-691, usually during moments of intense stress or grief. These hallucinations often culminate in violent, suicidal episodes, where the individuals either exsanguinate themselves or attempt to return to the burial sites to "rejoin Mother Mariana."
Suicide rates among Scar-Level event participants are alarmingly high, with many family members choosing to end their lives in particularly ritualistic and gruesome ways, such as hanging themselves from trees, cutting their own throats, or drowning in bodies of water. These acts are typically seen as final, desperate attempts to reconnect with ANM-691 and escape the overwhelming psychological trauma she has inflicted.
Scar-Level events mark the complete transformation of an affected family into a fanatical nature cult, devoted to the worship of ANM-691 as a goddess of death and decay. Despite the horrifying and destructive nature of these events, participants remain under ANM-691 influence, convinced that they are fulfilling their sacred duty to "Mother Mariana." Attempts by the MOTHRA to monitor or contain families affected by Scar-Level events have been largely unsuccessful, as any outside intervention only serves to exacerbate the cult’s obsession and accelerate their descent into madness.

HEADCANONS ABOUT NINA DA COSTA OR LITTLE PROFILE OF THE BRAZILIAN RICH ELITE
@thealmightyemprex @stormandforge
01° While she speaks brazilian portuguese, is only the Southeast Region standard variant, and she judges people who use popular slang and other regional variants as "speaking wrong";
02° Most of her life she travelled internationally to Canada, United States, Europe, Japan and some latin countries like México or Argentina to vacation in Cancun and Buenos Aires. She doesn't know most of Brasil itself, at best went for a holiday in Campos do Jordão, Petropolis, Angra dos Reis, Niterói, Santos or Fernando de Noronha. If you mention place like Chapada Diamantina to her, she will look at you like you're crazy;
03° Takes the world folklore away from its original neutral meaning academic context and uses it in a derogatory term to refer to brazilian popular culture;
04° She may be black skinned, but any time the Census asks her, she will say she is either white or parda (brown). Probably likes to talk about european (probably italian, german or dutch) ancestors, but the black grandmother stays in the closet;
05° At the mention of Spiritualism or afro-diasporic religions like Candomble or Umbanda, she will be frightened, saying "Is stuff of the Devil!";
06° Despises music like forró, axé, pagode, funk, charme, hip hop, reggae and technobrega because "they're loud, vulgar and the stuff of bandits." The only music she listens to is old Bossa Nova, american and european Classical Music;
07° Complains that marches and protests make impossible for her to pass with her car;
08° Sees the news of a woman victim of domestic violence or racial profiling and police brutality, and says about the: "They must have done something.";
09° Asks "Why the Quilombolas and Indians are asking for so much land?"

maysa monjardim (1936-1977)
* maysa was a brazilian singer-songwriter. born in the city of rio de janeiro in 1936, from a wealthy and traditional family. she spent her childhood years in a mansion, studied in a prestigious boarding catholic school and have always dreamed of being an artist. she was a rebellious teen who liked to smoke and drink in public, use short hair and masculine clothes, things that caused family fights. despite that, she was extremely feminine, well cared and romantic, enjoying writing songs, poems and love letters. she married at 18 with a entrepreneur who has 17 years her senior, he didn't like the fact that his wife wanted to be a singer and not a housewife, she divorced him two years after the marriage and pursued her music career, her first album was a success and she was invited to sing all across the world, including the usa and europe.
* her style was melancholic and histrionic, with songs about love and intense feelings, the genre that her and another women of the time (like angêla maria, dolores duran and nora ney) who sang songs in the same format was called "fossa" something deep and full of suffering and lament, also known as samba-canção, who was inspired by the french chanson, the jazz and the afro-brazilian samba.
* maysa's life was extremely chaotic, marked by many trips and also by many loves, maysa had several relationships, among them, the songwriter ronaldo boscôli who also dated two stars of the brazilian music: elis regina and nara leão. She was also known for her temperamental outbursts, her depressive crises and constant complaints noted in her diary about the loneliness she felt, which were clearly expressed in the lyrics she wrote. she was addicted to alcohol, cigarettes, sleeping pills and amphetamines, had scandals involving fights with her partners, cheating, nudity and mental health issues, she was a person with a strong and sardonic personality, very sharp by standards, but also very humorous and ironic. a lot of her brazilians fans compare her to lana del rey, since both of them wrote songs about feelings, love, desire, suffering and loneliness, were very influenced by the jazz and have tragic and melancholic styles, in addition to both having striking and controversial personalities.
* maysa unfortunately died in 1977, due to a car crash, in the city of niterói, she was not in the effects of alcohol. one of her latest diary entries was:
"Today is November 1976, I am a widow, 40 years old and a single woman. What will the future say?"
* maysa is a amazing brazilian singer whose legacy lasts until today, whether with her authorial songs like ouça, meu mundo caiu, tarde triste, resposta, adeus, felicidade infeliz, diplomacia, bronzes e cristais and o que? or with her covers like ne me quitte pas, dindi, eu sei que vou te amar and l'hymne a l'amour, between many others. she was a amazing and inspiring figure, very ahead of her time and my favorite brazilian singer besides nara leão, i highly recommend her albums ando só numa multidão de amores and convite para ouvir maysa. i think her music is great for those who like jazz, chanson, bossa nova and wants a sprinkle of sadness and melancholy on it.
