KIZABA - LIVE SHOW IN BOGOTA ( FESTIVAL AFROFUTURISMO)

Only You (Disco Jam)

The sun is out and it's Africa Oyé weekend here in Liverpool so here are a few tracks from Nigerian born Steve Monite's debut solo album Only You. The track Only You was rediscovered in the 2010s when it was included on the Soundway compilation Doing It In Lagos (Boogie, Pop & Disco In 1980s Nigeria) and Soundway reissued the full album in 2022. It was produced by the Cameroon-born Nigerian-bred producer and keyboard player Nkono Teles who brought top it a "modern" afro-pop sound. I've read the demo tracks had a reggae feel to them. Great thing about these re-issues is that they're well researched and there will be interviews with the artists about the recordings, here's an extract from the blurb on bandcamp
“After the Civil War in Nigeria, everybody wanted something exciting,” says Monite. Highlife, the dominant music genre, was seen as outmoded. “The educated elite were listening to American and English music,” he continues. “My role models were people like Barry White and Michael Jackson – they were young men like me. I liked the [American] funk band Brass Construction; some English pop.”
After his self-funded recording sessions in London failed in finding Monite a label home in the UK, he returned home to immediately be picked up by EMI Records in Nigeria instead. “They signed me straight away,” he says, and found himself in the EMI Studios with Nkono Teles, in the same studios where Paul McCartney and Wings recorded Band on the Run in 1973.
Monite says that Teles had lived for a time in New York, where disco music was driven by the whirr of the synth, and he’d wanted to bring that into Nigerian music. There was a Moog synthesiser in the studio and it’s what took Only You in a spacey new direction. “I was the first African artist to play electro-funk,” says Monite. “Teles was the visionary behind that song.”
Monite wrote a further three tracks, 'Welcome My Love', 'I Had A Dream’ and 'Things Fall Apart', which formed the basis of his one and only album. Monite wrote ‘Things Fall Apart’ after the military coup in 1983, when the country was yet again plunged into upheaval. “There was unemployment everywhere, food shortages, people scrambling for survival,” he says. “So many people, especially professional people like doctors, lawyers, businessmen, left Nigeria.”
In a way, the song documented the end of the golden age. With the middle classes dispersed, Nigeria’s halcyon boogie period was over. Steve Monite released his debut album in 1984 but it fell on deaf ears, including that of the label, who didn’t seem to want to promote it. “When my record came out, everything went cold.”

Music Monday Get Yer Rage On: Sleaford Mods Return!
Sleaford Mods fans rejoice! The iconic Nottingham duo are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their breakthrough album "Divide and Exit" with a special remastered reissue. The musical extravaganza celebrating African Culture returns this month as always there's something there for everyone. Liverpool will be playing host to this incredible event, full details including who'll be performing and tickets are below Selected artists, Oyé's Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney and representatives from Movema are available for interviews. Africa Oyé Festival 22nd & 23rd June 2024 Sefton Park, Liverpool FREE ENTRY Africa Oyé, the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture, takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world. “This isn’t just the largest festival of African and Caribbean music in Britain, it’s the best” – The Sunday Times The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism. It has played host to artists from nations right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and The Caribbean with Salsa, Soca and Reggae always a popular addition to the festivities. But Africa Oyé is about more than music… Over 90 stalls selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond will again be present at the Oyé village along with longtime supporter ‘News From Nowhere’, one of the UK’s premier stockists of African music, with all the performing artists and much more on sale, it’s a great opportunity to not only take in some of the best roots music around, but take some home with you too. For more information on the festival and other events held across the country by Africa Oyé please visit africaoye.com and follow them across social media. Website The UK’s biggest celebration of African and Caribbean music and culture will take place at Sefton Park in Liverpool this June with a stellar line-up of live music, DJs, workshops and more. On 22nd and 23rd June 2024, Africa Oyé will take over one of the region’s most picturesque green spaces in what has become a Liverpool institution since its humble beginnings as a series of city centre gigs in 1992. Goat Girl Share New Track and Video ‘words fell out’ Watch It Here Below The Waste Out This Friday, June 7, 2024 via Rough Trade Records A good video and I actually liked it. The lack of any colour tones but rather just grainy monochrome adds just that bit more depth to the sombre tones of the song. This is the first time that I have ever heard of Amyl and her band yet am already enjoying her music and what she is about. One of the things I like about her voice, apart from it being utterly charismatic, is that it balances the the deepness of the music. Just a few of the highlights (and there were many) of an amazing weekend, working at Africa Oyé. It's always brilliant, even when the weather's not so kind, but the music this year was on another level with BCUC, Moonlight Benjamin and Garifuna Collective being my new favourites.
Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
One love X

A-T-3 191 Africa Oyé - two disco tracks from South Africa
It's Africa Oyé weekend in Liverpool. The weather has been beautiful all week but today is overcast... gutted!
Picnicing by Starlight appeared on Soundway's Gumba Fire comp in 2018 and Startlight's only album was reissued earlier this year. Starlight were South African production duo of Emil Zoghby and John Galanakis
youtube
Manyane - Thabong (Frankie Francis Bubblegum Dub) - This was put out by the same label as the track above. This edit was put out by Soundway on the 12" EP Heads Records: South African Disco Dub Edits in 2018. The original instrumental pitch down to -8 had become a cosmic fave
