Like yeah I will admit that paper maganzines ARE almost dead here too (no more Anteojito or Billiken ever again.......) but that last post reminded of the tech gap between the First World and the Third World. No, I don't do all my shopping online, and no, I cannot just "buy a better laptop", what do you mean "16 RAM is obsolete", that's a top of the line laptop here. No, I won't buy a VR set to get into your fucking Metaverse, and no, I don't regulary "upgrade" my PC, no I won't fucking buy an internet connected refrigerator that is five times more expensive than a regular one, what the fuck is an "internet of things", none of my things have internet except my computer (barely), I will use my cellphone until it breaks I won't buy the latest model just because it has a new camera, you might as well ask me to buy a sports car every year.

Sometimes I read articles or things that are just completely incomprehensible and I realize they are written and aimed towards the Silicon Valley (and equivalent) audiences who have high speed wifi everywhere and can afford to just throw computers to the trash and buy new ones. There's such an incredible amount of electronics freely available in the USA and other countries (but mostly in the USA) and a culture of changing them when there's a new one, it's almost absurd. Here you don't "upgrade your laptop", you keep it running until it dies.

And here in Argentina it's the other extreme, electronics are treated as luxury items while they are all-important tools, but that's because we are hostage to a bunch of economical speculators who masturbate to the dollar exchange rate, but the situation is similar in other countries I think.

(There are rich people here who can afford to change cellphones and electronics but the majority lives like this)

TIMING: Current PARTIES: @chrisgates & @ronin-for-hire CONTENT: None SUMMARY: Chris heads to the local electronic store to see about getting one of his cameras fixed and meets Fang. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

That day Chris found himself in Fukuhara Electronics with a busted camera. Well, it wasn’t busted — but it was definitely malfunctioning. For some reason the lens was stuck extended. That happened with another, older, camera but he managed to get that one undone. It still has a little wonkiness to it as it closes, but overall, he thought he did a good job. This time, however, he was having trouble and couldn’t get it on its own, so he figured to hit up that electronics store he saw advertised online. 

He hoped they would be able to help him out, if not, maybe they’d have something where he could try to fix it himself. He wasn’t well skilled with fixing electronics, but he was proficient enough to get by. 

It was early enough that the store was a good bit empty. There were maybe one or two people browsing, but overall, it was a quiet morning. Perfect. With camera in hand, Chris stepped up to the counter. “Hi, morning,” he greeted, sleepy but still in high spirits. “I, uh, called yesterday about getting a camera looked at.”

Fang had her back turned to the man when she heard his voice. She was checking out one of the new items on display, something she herself could never afford but thought would look good as a replacement for her phone. Sara wouldn’t mind, right? Well, she probably would. Even with the owner having gone out for a quick run to chat with someone else or whatever, Fang would still rather not cause any complications with her current living situation.

With a very audible sigh, and an eye roll she didn’t even bother to hide, Fang turned around with a lethargic and brief smile accompanied by an equally lethargic and brief nod to acknowledge the customer’s presence. “Yeah? What’s wrong with it? Dropped it and broke the lens or something?”

Fang was not the best at customer service, which the scowls from the other people browsing attested to. She didn’t really give a damn about trying to look nice, even though she looked pretty decent for someone who just decapitated a zombie last night, or sound nice or even act nice. She felt it would be too inefficient, impractical, and a terrible waste of everyone’s time. The world was shit. Why would they put the effort of pretending it wasn’t? Just do and go. Or whatever.

The energy that wafted from the other person told him that they definitely didn’t want to be there, which — fair. Chris needed his camera fixed, but he didn’t necessarily want to be there, either. He’d rather be in bed sleeping, or trying to sleep anyway. Sleep was fickle and when it did come, it was littered with bad dreams. The only thing to really give him any relief from his insomnia-related frustration was going out into the dead quiet of the woods and taking some pictures. He was already on thin ice emotionally, as per usual, so he hoped her prickly mood wouldn’t turn his sour.

With that worry now at the back of his mind, Chris tried his best to remain pleasant throughout the interaction. He had to chuckle at her frank assessment. “Actually, yeah. Something like that.” He turned the camera over to point out the issue with the retractable lens. “The glass itself is okay, but the mechanism is shot to hell. Sometimes a good cleaning will fix it, but not this time I guess.” Chris nervously scratched at the back of his neck. “And it, uh,” he then lifted the camera and gave it a gentle shake. Something inside had gotten loose and it could be heard rattling inside.

“Yeah it doesn’t sound good. I have a bunch of other cameras so if this guy is toast then.. Totally fine.”

“You look like shit,” Fang offhandedly remarked, with a yawn but without even looking at the guy. It was definitely one of those comments that would land someone in hot water, especially if they just spouted that to someone they’ve never met before, someone that wasn’t a close friend, someone who didn’t know the words had no malice but were rather more empathic, someone they’ve just met. 

Fang’s sleep schedule was just as fucked up, if not more. In her pursuit for rent money, most of the jobs she had to take needed to be done deep in the night. It was the only time she found easiest to take down a monster with minimal collateral damage. Most of the time, the creatures were either resting in the day or doing normal day things, like jobs, which had been odd to her the first time she arrived. Back in Japan, most of the creatures were just, you know, creatures, spirits, malevolent entities, with zero jobs. Capitalism is a worst monster, it seemed.

She squinted at the camera, observing it the best she could, investigating it more precisely, with both her eyes and her hands. Fang didn’t even ask permission. As soon as she could, she grabbed it and turned it around and over in her hands, checking everything for herself, even though it was a more complicated machine than what she’s used to. “Yeah, we’ll have to pry it open to see if it’s worse inside or whatever. When do you need it? You good to come back after three days or a week?”

Chris pressed his lips together at her comment. You look like shit. He really hoped not — sure he felt like it, but he’d taken a shower and combed his hair and did all the usual things to make it seem like he hadn’t been up at all hours of the night. Still, there was no amount of morning routine that would remove the bags or darkness from under his eyes, he supposed. 

“Wow, uh.. Thanks? I definitely feel it.. Nice to know it shows.” It wasn’t at all nice, but there was nothing he could do now. Maybe he’d go back to the motel room and pass out there for a little while; he definitely felt the exhaustion. It settled uncomfortably behind his eyes. It was just a little disappointing that he didn’t feel like that at night, when it made more sense.

There wasn’t much tact, if any at all, but Chris figured she was the expert so he kept quiet while she looked over the faulty device. He nodded. “That’s cool. Three days or a week is fine, yeah, honestly however long you think it’ll take. I don’t need it for anything major, so you can take your time.”

Fang simply nodded at his response, a gesture of acknowledging his appreciation of her bluntness. Or at least that’s what she thought he was saying, doing. Looking like shit, for a lack of a better term, was something to be proud of, she justified the rude comment in her head without much effort. It simply meant you’re doing more than you should. It made more sense to her, to someone who’s lived their whole life fighting monsters in the dark, than it would any other person, any normal person. 

Unfortunately for Chris, Fang wasn’t much of an expert, especially when it came to his device. Sure, Fang had the eye and the wit to handle most mechanical trinkets, which was quite impressive for someone who never had formal education in the field, but most of what she knew were basic stuff for people in the field. The newer, more complicated technologies took more time for her to figure out, though she was always able to do so far faster than her peers but not the ones with formal education of course. 

“Mm-hm,” Fang took out a notebook and then a pen, which had a spiraling rope-like thing attached to its end, which in itself was attached to a holder bolted onto the counter. It was meant to keep the customers from stealing the pen, as if such a pen was worth anything. Spoiler alert: It was not worth anything. “Name, number, and address, if you’d like. We’ll keep in touch. Until then, don’t die.” 

She looked at him with those empty, unimpressed eyes of hers. Fang wasn’t entirely interested in the man’s life, only that she’d find it annoying if she made all that effort on his shit, only for him to die and never pay them. He did seem like whatever he was doing would kill him. She’s seen his type before. It was familiar in a way she didn’t even realize herself.

Part of Chris wondered if he should have just tried to do it himself. It wasn’t the end of the world if the camera didn’t make it — it wasn’t a fancy model or anything, not worth much salt except maybe a few Jacksons and Hamiltons (and that was in pristine condition). He probably would have been a bit more upset if he mucked it up, though, rather than someone else, so it was why he figured it was best in her hands. That assumption waned when he met her, however.

Still, he was there now and in it a little too deep — if he tried to back out now, any future interactions (and being a technology user, there would be future interactions) might fall awkward and Chris couldn’t handle that. If he was going to try to live in a city for longer than a year, he needed to grin and bear it.

“Chris... My number is 971-xxx-xxxx and uh.. I’m in a motel, so…” He shrugged, though her postscript urged a nervous chuckle out of him. “Heh. Thanks? I’ll try not to.” So far, so good — he figured if he could make it the some odd number of years he’d spent running (from himself), he could make it the week or so she needed to fix his busted camera.

Fang raised an eyebrow when the guy mentioned he was staying at a motel. Was that a pick-up line? Was he trying to, how Sara say, score with her? The slayer crossed her arms across her chest, looking him over rather sternly. Yep. He was most definitely not her type. First of all, he was a dude. That was always annoying and very messy. Even though she’s been with a guy. Although that was years ago. The last person she was with was a girl. Fang smiled at that random memory before catching herself, feigning to cough as an excuse for her awkward trip down nostalgia. 

“A motel?” Fang repeated, grabbing the pen and paper from him, looking his information over like it was an extension of him, of his physical form, an additional page of his lover resume. Or whatever Sara called it. “With your girlfriend?” Fuck. She immediately regretted that question as soon as she asked it. The words just slipped out of her mouth, and now she was standing there, unable to look back at him. Why the fuck would she ask that? Maybe he wasn’t even interested in girls. Maybe he was into guys. Maybe that could save her. Somehow. I mean, we could… Slayers do have needs. This one was just too terrible at keeping her needs down low. 

Chris wondered if he shouldn’t have mentioned the motel. Her look said it all, at least, that’s what he assumed. It was a little weird, though, he had to be honest — why couldn’t he stay in a hotel? A motel just sounded creepy and dirty, maybe even a little sad. Sure, a lot of motels that he managed to find himself in across the counter were creepy, dirty and sad, but the Bearcliff was pretty quaint. It was clean, if a bit outdated, but everything worked the way it was meant to and there were no bed bugs or blood stains to be found. So he counted that as a win.

He opened his mouth to respond to her inflected echo, but he snapped it shut when the follow up question escaped her. Chris, unfortunately, felt his face heat up but he urged out a sheepish breath of a laugh and shook his head. “Uh, no.. no. I don’t have a girlfriend.” God, he wanted to crawl underneath the counter and die. “Just me and my cameras..” It got worse. Yeah, maybe he should have let the camera stay broken — this was worse than being told he looked like shit. “Um… So, um, if that’s all you need from me.. I guess I’ll get out of your hair?”

“Really?” Fang looked him over again before frowning, arms crossing over her chest. He didn’t have a girlfriend? That was odd. He looked like someone who would have more than a single girlfriend. Or maybe she was just being stereotypical of him. He looked good. He looked…himself. That usually meant guys like him had a lot of girls swooning over them. Usually. Maybe something was wrong with him? Maybe something was wrong with her? Definitely her. “I find that a little hard to believe, but I can’t say I’m always right.” Even if he did look like shit, he still looked good underneath all that…shit. 

“Hm? Yeah, sure… You probably have somewhere else to be, someone else to shoot,” Fang shrugged, turning her attention back to his camera. What did he take photos of anyway? Could be a private investigator like that Emilio guy. Now that one was a piece of work. In a good way, but mostly in a bad way? Eh. Maybe this one takes photos of models? Fang could be a model, right? Nah, she’s too broken in more ways than one. Probably showed physically, too. Her shoulder looks weird sometimes. Whatever. Shrugging those thoughts off of her head, she turned to him again. “I’ll deliver this to your motel once it’s fixed.” But did she have to?

Her disbelief wasn’t all too surprising. Whether it was genuine or just a conversational placeholder was another story, one that Chris wasn’t too bothered to read any more of. Reading into things had a tendency to backfire, at least in his experience. Everything was kept surface level and at an arm’s length at all times — that was the fear. That was the expectation of fear. The product. The driving force behind every single decision. It created something of a hermit in him, much to his chagrin. He wanted to make connections, to have friends and relationships, damn it. He wanted more than just small talk. 

Chris shrugged. “It’s true.. I just-” he shook his head and shrugged again, not wanting to get into it with the repair tech. The last time he tried opening up to someone about his ‘problems’ they wound up dead. He liked Wicked’s Rest too much to make a mistake like that again. “I don’t know, I don’t have a lot of luck in that department, I guess.” He didn’t know why he didn’t have a lot of success, but it was the truth. What wasn’t the truth was him needing to be anywhere, but he nodded in agreement anyway — there was a cool looking rock formation by the beach he wanted to snap, but that wasn’t a time sensitive thing.

He stole a quick pause when she mentioned delivery. He could have sworn she mentioned something about him coming back to pick up the camera early on in their brief and mildly stunted conversation, but he didn’t trust his mind. He couldn’t. He could only blink away his computing error and nod in automatic agreement. That was a kind gesture on her part, incredibly so and one Chris would have offered himself if he were in her shoes, but the nagging and paranoid creature that settled beneath his skin rippled with anxiety. He couldn’t help the suspicious thoughts. Still, he ignored it, wanting instead to hope for the best. “.. Are you sure? You don’t have to go out of your way for that, I can come by no problem.”

The right side of Fang’s lips curled up at that revelation but only for a moment, as she quickly regained her composure as soon as she lowered her face to feign a yawn. Here he was, another broken soul. Seemed just like her. Seemed also terrible at relationships and being normal. Well, relationships WERE being normal, weren’t they? Fang wouldn’t know. She’s never had a real one, at least nothing that wasn’t tied to the supernatural bullshit she had to contend with on a nightly basis. “Same.”

But there it was. As she should have expected. As per usual, what always ends up happening. Another rejection. Or at least a semblance of one, a hesitant ‘no, thanks,’ which was in her book a polite attempt for one to get some distance between them. It probably wasn’t anything like that, though, but Fang was stunted in that aspect of her life, of all life. “All right then,” she heaved a big sigh, shaking her head. “Whatever, man. Come back whenever. Was just trying to make things easier for you, but you do you…literally. I sure as hell won’t.” She then rolled her eyes, shook her head again, and stared daggers at the poor, probably confused customer.

Finding others who were just as, if not more, despondent and loveless as him was easy for Chris. He couldn’t be sure if it was the look on his face or just his energy, but they had a tendency to come in droves — and he had a tendency to chase them off, exactly what he was doing to this poor shop clerk who probably felt the same way. He felt like shit for it, but the thought of someone showing up to his door when he didn’t know them very well sort of freaked him out. Maybe if they knew each other for a few more days, but even still — the very thought made him nervous. If only he could read minds...

Her reaction, however, surprised him. Usually people would just shrug and say ‘alright’ or ‘up to you’ or some other placate to just move things along. No hard feelings. But no, apparently not. Her flippant dismissal held — what was it, anger? Chris couldn’t be sure, all he knew was he must have said something wrong. He looked back at her with brows furrowed in confusion, unsure of exactly where to go with this. He didn’t want a fight, especially with someone who could potentially fix his equipment, but he grew tired of the third degree. “Wh-.. Did I say something wrong? Look, I didn’t mean to offend you or anything I just-” Chris balled up his hands into fists in evident frustration before he could expel a sigh that mirrored her own. “People make me nervous.” Each word came out punctuated, as if it were practiced. This was the classic, “it’s not you, it’s me” — the tagline of his life. 

“So I’ll just… come back whenever. Okay?” Chris punctuated each word with a tap of his hands against the countertop — a habit that helped to calm him for a short while. It was just long enough for him to put distance between himself and the situation. He needed to leave. “Sorry again.. But, uh.. Yeah. Bye.” Awkward wouldn’t cover the half wave and slight bump into the counter beside him as he’d started to leave backwards. “I guess I’ll see you later.”

Fang raised an eyebrow, heaving an audible sigh as she crossed her arms over her chest. It was bad enough that he had rejected her…whatever it was, but now he was patronizing him? Rude. So very rude. “I’m not offended,” she lied, staring daggers at the man. “Usually, when people get nervous about other people, it’s because they’re lying or hiding something.” She just made all that up right then and there. Maybe she’s heard something along those lines before, but she definitely didn’t even believe most of that crap. People get nervous about other people all the time. Especially the people who knew about monsters pretending to be other people. 

“Yeah, sure, knock yourself out,” Fang, ever the stubborn b-word, just shook her head, proceeding to ignore him. The audacity of this man to think she’d ever want to see him again after he already rejected her and even patronized her lack of social skills. As he left the store, however, nearing the door, she couldn’t help but steal a glimpse of him. Her lips curled into a playful smirk without her consent, or knowledge, clearly liking what she was seeing. She wondered if she’d still be around when he returned. 

As an idea immediately sprung in her mind, Fang grabbed the pen and wrote on the notebook beside his contact information, remarking for whoever would fix the camera to let her know once it’s ready for pick-up. Sara, or her other tech girls, would most likely ask what that was all about, but she could just shrug them off and act like it was nothing. She could be an actress. More likely a stuntwoman but close enough. Hehehe.
