Can Aer hybridize?? Stares at Cave and Deep Sea types... spiky strange guy.....
Short answer: Yes! Any Aer is fertile with any other Aer (including themselves). All the variations I drew are general patterns that show a spectrum of variable traits, rather than distinct subspecies!
For a really long ramble about Aer development...
Long answer: Aera appearances are extremely variable through a combination of genetically inherited traits, metamorphosis, and hormones.
Aer hatch from eggs in a larval form, which is a tiny, fully-aquatic little guy that looks like this:
Tumblr media
A few traits, such as skin color, markings, number of tendrils, and rough tendril size are fixed genetically. I am still working on exactly how these traits hybridize in terms of dominant, recessive, and linked traits.
Once they are roughly a year old and in good health, baby Aer begin metamorphosis. In metamorphosis, they will always develop their legs, air-breathing lungs, and air-hearing. However, based on the wetness vs dryness of their environment, and the temperature, different hormones will be triggered, resulting in different traits. Aer in dry, non-aquatic environments, who still must lay their eggs in water, have to spend a lot more time consciously transitioning their babies into dry life. These metamorphosis-hormonal traits include things like limb-fin surface area, tail shape and length, skin texture, tendril shape, sensory fin/whisker shape/length, foot shape, and some minor changes in respiratory system structure.
Horns, spikes, barbs, and plates (such as in the Cave, Desert, and Swamp Aer) are hormonal, and can continue to fluctuate through an Aern's life. So, through either environmental conditions or artificial hormones, any Aern could develop spikes, horns, etc. Aer can also file down their horns and spikes to return them to soft skin, though it requires upkeep. Still, there is a sort of "default" amount of horns that a given Aern will grow when they are healthy and in their metamorphosis environment, which comes from parent genetics. Swamp and Desert Aer, for example, are much more likely to have their tendrils fully encased in horn tissue. Deep Sea Aer very rarely are able to grow horn tissue anywhere other than facial scales, even with artificial hormones.
Here's a little diagram of how Vernes, a Coastal-Plains Aern who was raised in Coastal waters, developed and inherited traits from their parents.
Tumblr media
From a character design standpoint, I approach all this very loosely. When designing an Aern, I vaguely decide where they are from, then given them a smattering of traits associated with that area, with some individualized variations. My character Gio, for example, was designed to be a typical Swamp Aern.
Tumblr media
This informs his color (dark green), general plate/horn pattern (lots), and his fins and sensory fins appearance (minimal). Personal flare is added in this specifics of his markings, and the shape of his horns, which are deliberately manicured into this shape/style through filing, shaping, and maintained. To compare, here is Gio as a baby, towards the middle-end of his metamorphosis.
Tumblr media
He has yet to lose his whiskers or primary arm fins, and has not yet begun horn-tissue production on his tendrils. His markings, skin color, and general tendril length, though, are pretty much set. Anyways, that was a super long ramble. TLDR: Yeah, Aer can hybridize all over the place.

The Alberta Energy Regulator is investigating after dozens of bird carcasses were discovered at an oilsands site near Fort McMurray, Alta.
A post on the AER website on Saturday afternoon said Suncor reported around 4 p.m. Friday that 32 dead waterfowl were found at a tailings pond 29 kilometres north of the community. An update from the regulator late that night said a sweep had been completed by Suncor on Saturday and revised the count to 43 birds as well as two muskrats, one bat and one vole.
An AER inspector was immediately sent to the site to investigate, the announcement said, to ensure mitigation strategies are in place and implemented appropriately by the energy company.
