the weird noise reduction and edge enhancement + general software processing to prevent the image looking like it was taken on a 2003 digital cam IS the medium of phone camera photography
#it IS weird as fuck and the only thing thats a bit bothersome about it to me is that there is very little awareness about hardware#limitations being mitigated by software inventing pixels. because nothing else is physically possible.#at the size of phone camera sensors and lenses.#camera technology haven't advanced#image processing has

SEPFEMBER 2024 PROMPTS LIST
HERE WE ARE! AT LONG LAST! THE MOMENT YOU'VE ALL BEEN (HOPEFULLY) WAITING FOR! GIRL MONTH!
I honestly can't believe this is actually happening. This event was a shower thought a few months ago.
Here's a recap of the event: to participate, make at least one fanwork of any variety during September that features a woman or women from the Zelda franchise as the main character/s. All Linksmeets are welcome in this challenge, as well as general LoZ fans!
Before I drop the prompts list for those who are looking for a little direction, I'd like to mention that I have made an AO3 COLLECTION FOR THIS EVENT. It's open and unmoderated so you can add your works to it freely. And if you post on tumblr, please tag #sepfember !! I'll be scrolling through the tag every day looking for things to reblog and gush about 👀
If you have any questions at all about this event, or you want to chat about it, my askbox is open! I will also respond to comments and reblogs of this post.
Now, onto the prompts. Disclaimer: you DON'T have to use all/any of these prompts, or only create things for certain characters on their featured day. This list is just a GUIDE for those who want it. If you have other plans, go with your heart!
At the end of the day, this is a celebration, and all that matters is that you have fun. I hope some of you will join me next month in giving our girls some time in the spotlight, but if you can't, that's okay! There's no pressure! This is just a passion project of mine, really, and I am overjoyed that people are interested 💛💛💛
(apologies in advance for the terrible quality of these pics and the equally terrible commentary. i thought it would be funny. also, i've never had to come up with a prompts list before and it shows.)
DAY 1: SKYWARD SWORD ZELDA + PURPOSE
(we start at the beginning of course 💛)
DAY 2: MARIN + WASH
(it was SO hard to find a screenshot of her that didn't have link in it. they're both cute but this ain't about him.)
DAY 3: MEDLI + GIFT
(i didn't know she played the harp until i saw this screenshot! i obviously have a lot to learn.)
DAY 4: TWILIGHT PRINCESS ZELDA + FREEZE
(how creepy does she look here?! so awesome)
DAY 5: HILDA + GHOST
(SUCH a good character for real. she has depth!!!! she has a thematic purpose!!!)
DAY 6: URBOSA + LOSE
(two words: LIGHTNING POWERS ⚡⚡⚡)
DAY 7: SPIRIT TRACKS ZELDA + MISTAKE
(babygirl you are 2 entire pixels.)
DAY 8: FI + ORDER
(oh she is everything to me)
DAY 9: MIDNA + SWORD
(she looks so soulful right now)
DAY 10: HYRULE WARRIORS ZELDA + SUMMON
(what a FIRE camera angle??? her armour is so impractically attached but SHE HAS A SWORD‼️)
DAY 11: GODDESSES OF HYRULE + EYES
(hylia, din, nayru, farore, the list goes on...)
DAY 12: ZORA PRINCESSES + TRUST
(mipha, ruto... poor suckers... it can't be fun, falling for link...)
DAY 13: OCARINA OF TIME ZELDA | SHEIK + FATE
(note: I personally hc this character as a trans man, but since this isn't explicitly confirmed in-game and might not be shared with everyone, I've given them a celebration day anyway. you are free to do what you wish.)
DAY 14: MALON + GUARD
(she is adorable. look at her)
DAY 15: IMPA + BOUND
(HOTTEST MOST SEXY MOST BADASS WOMAN IN THE FRANCHISE ‼️‼️‼️ I LOVE YOU IMPA YOU ARE PERFECT. SHUT UP I DEFINITELY DON'T PLAY FAVOURITES—)
DAY 16: FOUR SWORDS ADVENTURES ZELDA + PORTAL
(i loved her in the fsa manga. she's barely in it but STILL. go read it.)
DAY 17: FAIRIES + TIRED
(the great fairies, navi, ciela, tatl, proxi...)
DAY 18: TETRA + LEGACY
(isn't she KICKASS?!)
DAY 19: EPONA + BONE
(our lovely loyal girl 🥰)
DAY 20: A LINK BETWEEN WORLDS ZELDA + HOME
(SHE IS SUCH A GOOD PARALLEL TO HILDA PLEASSSSSE)
DAY 21: SARIA + WISH
(a classic character! isn't this picture so peaceful)
DAY 22: BOTW/AOC/TOTK ZELDA + PEACE
(SHE IS EVERYTHING TO ME. SCREAMING CLAWING CRYING. MY DARLING, YOUR FANARTISTS WERE THE ONES TO DRAW ME INTO THE ZELDA FANDOM. I HOPE I CAN RETURN THE FAVOUR ONE DAY)
DAY 23: CIA + LANA + STUDY
(technically, she's one person. between the two of them they certainly only wear enough clothes for one person... )

(sister to the hero! but what's her story?)
DAY 25: ECHOES OF WISDOM ZELDA + ARREST
(YEAHHHHHHHHH GIRL MONTH GIRL DAY GIRL GAME!!!)
DAY 26: CD-i ZELDA + HOLIDAY
(hehheehehehe. i bet you weren't expecting her. neither was i tbh)
DAY 27: PURAH + FIRE
(SHE'S CLEVER! I LOVE CLEVER WOMEN!)
DAY 28: ILIA + ERUNE + MEND
(listen. i know erune is a very niche character - she literally only exists in the four swords manga - but consider. i love her)
DAY 29: ALTTP/OOS/OOA/LA ZELDA + MISSING
(she has no canon personality. you know what that means. get the building equipment out fellas)
DAY 30: LINKLE + FAREWELL
(and here we are - LAST DAY!)
THE END! YAY! I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER - CAN YOU?

(Everything Looks Worse) In Black and White
(IDK guys "Kodachrome" was in my commuting playlist yesterday and then this happened.)
Hob was not, by nature, particularly introspective. Still, he did know that one of the things that had kept him sane for six hundred years was the way that he had been able to adapt, not again and again but continuously. He changed with the times as they changed around him, not just in mimicry of everyone around him but truly.
Cell phones had been an exciting new gadget to him, and then a useful tool, and then, in time, as deeply embedded in his life as they were for anyone else who was a busy adult in London in the third decade of the twenty-first century.
All this was to say that it did, of course, occur to him to try to take selfies with Dream when things advanced between them to the point where he ought to have couple photos in his phone. The first picture he dared to actually take, though, was the first morning he woke up to find Dream lying in his bed looking rumpled and sweet.
Hob hadn't even really thought about it, just reached over for his phone and swiped up the camera, snapping a few shots before he looked directly at his phone. He was too busy looking at the way the early morning light made Dream look soft and warm, raising red-brown highlights in his black hair and warming the cool paleness of his skin. There was just enough light to reveal the blue of one half-open eye as Dream squinted and then glared at him.
Hob only looked at his phone when it made a strange mournful noise he'd never heard from it before; he had a bare glimpse of something weird and pixelated before the screen went black.
He frowned down at it, and Dream murmured in his lowest, sexiest rumble, "Is that infernal device of more interest than your lover naked in your bed, Hob Gadling?"
Hob tossed the phone over his shoulder and rolled toward Dream to kiss him and then climb on top of him. Hob didn't think about his phone for a while after that.
It was only after Dream had gone back to the Dreaming and Hob was trying to get on with his day that he hunted down where his phone had landed. It was physically unharmed—he'd long since learned the benefits of a sturdy case—but wouldn't turn back on for love or money. When Hob opened it up he found that some of its insides had melted.
The next time Dream stopped by, Hob showed it to him. "What did you do to my phone? Were you that annoyed to have your picture taken?"
Dream frowned—Hob hastily checked to be sure his new phone was nowhere in range—but he looked honestly confused. "I... did not intend to, my love. I apologize."
"No, no, my own fault," Hob said. "But now I'm curious."
He went and dug up an old phone. He kept meaning to trade them in or recycle them or donate them somewhere, but somehow he always had an old one or two floating around and never remembered it was there when he actually needed a replacement. Now he plugged it in under Dream's curious gaze, and waited until he could power it on.
He checked that the phone seemed basically functional, and then swiped open the camera and pointed it at Dream.
He clicked once, under Dream's baffled but benign gaze, and then looked down at the screen.
What should have been a photo of his otherworldly gorgeous beloved was just a smear of black and white.
"Huh," Hob said.
He showed it to Dream, who tilted his head in interest. "I suppose the device is trying to capture what it cannot. My appearance, to any living being, is mediated by expectations. Dreamers see me in a way that fits their own perceptions, but," Dream gestured at himself. "This is not a body like yours, as much as it looks and feels like one to you."
"Huh," Hob said, staring at the photo again, an objective glimpse at the unknowable vastness of Dream.
Then he clicked another photo, and another, and another, until the phone made a mournful noise and died. Since he didn't have to fling it away at once, he tapped a finger experimentally at the back until he found where it felt burning-hot; a sniff gave up a distinct smell of fried components and liquefied silicon.
"Are you quite satisfied?" Dream asked. There was a tiny smile on his face when Hob looked up.
Hob grinned back. "Oh, no," he said. "I'm just getting started."
Clearly anything with electronics was out, so Hob went shopping in various storage units and online. Proper film cameras captured different kinds of black-and-white blurs; Hob took up developing his own film to experiment with processes. He managed to pull weird iridescence in the blackest black and brightest white sometimes. He captured slight variations of shape.
He read the darkness and brightness like tea leaves, like omens. It was fun for a while, and then fascinating, trying to discern some truth of Dream's nature, some hint of his real form.
As time went on, and Dream told him less and less of what was going on in the Dreaming when they weren't together, Hob started to feel differently about it. It started to feel like it mattered. Like he had to catch an image of Dream.
Like he wasn't going to be able to keep him, and was going to need something to remember him by.
There was a day when Dream came to him quiet, withdrawn. There were no tear tracks on his face, but he smelled of salt, and he wouldn't meet Hob's eyes.
It was habit, by then, to set up the camera, to snap a few pictures. Dream didn't seem to notice. Hob hardly noticed himself.
It was only later that Hob developed the images and discovered two streaks of lurid, bloody red about where Dream's hands had been.
Hob didn't see him after that for a long time.
Dream turned up on a rainy night that felt weirdly like that night in 1889 even before Hob opened his door and found Dream standing there.
Dream actually asked for a drink, for the first time Hob could remember. He didn't say what was wrong, barely spoke about anything at all, but Hob could feel it radiating off him.
This felt like goodbye. It felt like sitting beside a deathbed.
Hob didn't know how to make Dream stay, didn't know how to stop whatever was happening to him.
The only thing he could think of was to crawl into Dream's lap and kiss him—and after he'd taken that as far as he could, he grabbed the camera and snapped a shot of the two of them together. The first selfie he'd ever tried with Dream.
He didn't develop the film. He didn't want to know how it looked. He didn't want to know that his last attempt to keep some little piece of Dream had been another hopeless failure.
On a sunny Sunday morning, Hob woke up and Dream was lying in his bed. For a moment he couldn't breathe; for a moment the ache in his heart was enough to pin him in place. It had to be a dream, a hopeless memory of the way things had been a year ago, when Hob had imagined there was a future for them.
Dream made a disgruntled noise and turned his face into the pillow, pulling his arm up over his head, and—
There was hair under his arm. There was, in fact, a distinct whiff of body odor.
"Dream?" Hob whispered.
"If you are going to send me away," Dream said, his voice velvety and deep but lacking some impossible edge it used to have. "Kind—" he cleared his throat, "please, lend me some clothes. My siblings were optimistic about how this would end."
"Your siblings," Hob said, shuffling through the little Dream had ever told him about his family. Had Death done something?
Had... Destiny? Despair? Desire? The missing one whose name Dream never spoke to Hob?
Delirium?
Hob sat up and pinched himself, hard, but Dream was still lying naked in his bed, and now Hob could see that he was breathing. As Hob watched he turned his face out of the pillow, like he was experiencing the discomfort of not breathing freely when he hid his face in it.
"Dream," Hob repeated. "What..."
Dream turned over, slinging an arm over his face. "I am... just what you see, now. I have abandoned my realm. I am your Dream as you have known me, but no longer Dream of the Endless."
For a second there his voice almost had that elusive something, but—he only sounded like a human being trying to sound uncanny.
Dream was... here. And alive, despite the way things had seemed to be going.
"My Dream," Hob whispered.
Dream just barely peeked out from behind his arm, and Hob lunged sideways to grab his phone. He fumbled a few times trying to pull up the camera and snap a pic, his hands shaking badly, but after a few tries he dared to look down at the screen.
Dream was there, just as he looked to Hob, if on a strange angle and poorly framed. His pale skin was given a golden cast by the sunlight, his black hair showed highlights that looked almost red where the light was brightest, and one visible blue eye was narrowed in a glare.
"Is that infernal device," Dream murmured, a faint thread of amusement in his voice, "of more interest than—"
Hob threw the phone over his shoulder and silenced Dream with a kiss. When they both had to stop to breathe, he came up laughing; the second time they stopped Dream was laughing too.
Later—much later—Hob printed that first shaky picture and framed it.

Gameboy Camera "Deluxe" edition
(creepypasta)
Back in the day, there was this strange GB camera copy called the "Deluxe". It was a very eerie copy where you could not take pictures, as the photo would come out all jumbled up(though there is a later exception). You could play the minigames though.
but the cryptic messages did not make the unease go away. Not to mention that the images already in the album were just… unsettling. Deformed bodies of all ages, incomprehensible pixelated mess. That's not the main thing this game was known for, though. It was the Real-time search part in the shoot menu.
Said option would activate the camera again, but you are then given the prompt to look around for something. And in real-time, a humanoid-looking person comes out and stare at you, of which you shoot them and engage in a rudimentary RPG-style fight.(this is the exception).
You have to defeat two of these things in order to reach the mastermind; The Miss or Miss Deluxe, as she was nicknamed. You accept her request and fight her. Despite your best effort, however, it would end with her taking a picture of you and the surreal credits rolling in.
A new photo is then added to your album; a face gasping in the void.
The photo is named "YOU:>"
I heard there were many rumors' of this game's origins (much like the creator), despite some copies existing and the rom being dumped online. The usual "haunted by ghost game, advance government experiment" and so on. Can't believe those if I'm frank, but I can imagine being terrified as a kid if I were to play this game.
The rumors say that the creator was this Miss Deluxe but only due her constant appearance all over the game, and her holding a GB camera much like the player.
It is certain the creator was expert in programming, as well them going to Nintendo space world convention in the 90s-20s to sell these(given some witness testimony).
I do wonder, for what purpose the creator was doing all of this, marketing & promotion?, becoming a game designer? Who knows…I do know that they may be watching after all these years, knowing they became a lil strange legend in gaming history…

little details i enjoy about bw coming from dppt:
•when you have like potions or whatever selected you can heal all your party at once just moving around
•you can map multiple items to the y button if you want and simply choose to select from them each time! (granted i only ever had it set to the bike but like. having the option is nice)
•animated pixel sprites. enough said
•just the way the camera moves around in 3D space despite this being a 2D pixel sprite game… i’m honestly stunned at how good they make things look. it’s like this was the transitional period between 2D and 3D
•battles move faster lol. the hp bar… also that clicking the screen or a will advance the on-screen text just like out of battle dialogue. no more awkward pause between the action being announced and executed
•hms are still a thing but almost never required. they can help you get access to new side stuff or take a shortcut but the levels are designed such that you can get by just fine most of the time without making room in your team setup
•likewise a lot of the routes are structured to give you a nearly straight shot across roads without needing to cross through tall grass/deep sand/caves/etc. you absolutely can venture off the path and get new pokémon and stuff and you should, but if you’re in a hurry you don’t have to go through that slog every time
•the fact that many trainers along certain routes or in dungeons/minidungeons are doctors! it’s very nice having the opportunity to heal up for free in the middle of chaos
•reusable tms!!! not even sv has this- yeah you can make more fairly easily, but like. still. a free and infinite tm is amazing. and it makes the most sense in-universe when you think about what a tm physically is. makes switching a lot of moves way less stressful
•……npcs who inform you of the trend where pokémon learn fewer moves upon leveling up once they’ve evolved. and the trend specifically of stone evos almost never learning new moves. because i DID NOT KNOW THAT. this was my fourth pokémon game.

Looking for the Best Camera for Video? These Are the Top Choices for 2025!
In 2025, the world of videography continues to evolve, with cameras becoming more powerful, portable, and capable of capturing breathtaking footage. Whether you're a professional filmmaker, a content creator, or an amateur enthusiast, choosing the right camera for video is essential. With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to determine which one is best suited to your needs.
This guide will walk you through the best cameras for video in 2025, from cutting-edge mirrorless models to professional-grade cinema cameras. We’ll explore the standout features, performance, and price points of each, so you can make an informed decision and start shooting high-quality videos.
1. Why Choosing the Right Camera Matters
When it comes to videography, not all cameras are created equal. The best camera for video needs to offer crisp image quality, smooth frame rates, and advanced video-centric features like high dynamic range, autofocus, and stability. It’s important to know what to look for, whether it’s 4K/8K resolution, fast autofocus, or professional-grade audio options.
Key factors to consider:
Resolution: The higher the resolution, the sharper the footage.
Frame Rate: Higher frame rates ensure smoother motion, especially for action shots.
Low-Light Performance: Cameras with great ISO performance will excel in darker environments.
Stabilization: In-body or lens stabilization can make or break handheld shots.
Lens Compatibility: Choosing a system with versatile lenses is crucial for different shooting needs.
2. Sony Alpha 1 – The All-in-One Powerhouse
Sony continues to dominate the camera market, and in 2025, the Sony Alpha 1 is still one of the best cameras for video enthusiasts and professionals alike. With 8K recording capabilities at 30 fps, this mirrorless camera is a beast in terms of video performance. Its Real-time Eye AF for video ensures that subjects stay sharp even in fast-moving environments.
Key features:
8K 30fps and 4K 120fps video recording.
15-stop dynamic range for rich details in highlights and shadows.
Full-frame sensor for superior low-light performance.
Dual CFexpress card slots for extended recording times.
3. Canon EOS R5C – The Hybrid Marvel
For those who want a camera that excels in both photography and video, the Canon EOS R5C is a top choice in 2025. It offers cinema-grade video performance with 8K RAW recording and comes with advanced cooling for extended video shoots. The R5C bridges the gap between Canon's cinema line and its mirrorless systems, making it perfect for hybrid shooters.
Key features:
8K RAW at 30fps and 4K 120fps.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF for incredibly fast autofocus.
C-Log 3 for extended dynamic range in post-production.
Compact and lightweight design ideal for on-the-go shoots.
4. Panasonic Lumix GH7 – The Best for Content Creators
For content creators who need a more budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on quality, the Panasonic Lumix GH7 is a go-to camera. Known for its Micro Four Thirds sensor, the GH7 offers excellent video performance in a compact form factor. It’s perfect for vloggers, YouTubers, and those who need a camera that can shoot high-quality video without the bulk of larger systems.
Key features:
6K video recording at 30fps.
5-axis in-body stabilization for smooth handheld shots.
10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording for professional-grade video quality.
Versatile, lightweight design ideal for travel and vlogging.

DevBlog Abridged #2 - Locations and World Building
Architecture & Set Design By creating a teaser as the first major step in the project, we were tasked early on with the need for a diverse range of locations that hinted at the scope of Sydney3 and the world in which the series would take place.
The future of 20XX is one dominated by pollution and sprawling cityscapes, a decision that bleeds through every facet of the location design. Even with the neon and splashes of colour, we made sure that every location had a certain level of grime and haziness to reflect the state of the world.
The architecture followed a brutalist base with hacked-together corrugated awnings and piping. Drawing inspiration from Ghost in the Shell (1995)—and, by extension, modern-day Hong Kong—we aimed for a densely-packed, functional labyrinth of residential and commercial dwellings all rolled into one.
PlayStation games of the mid-to-late 90s utilised low draw distance coupled with dense render fog, but we needed to have extensive, expansive sets for the camera to shoot in. In addition, the angles were oftentimes low, showing much more of the ceilings and skies than would otherwise be necessary in a PS1 game.
Textures and Lighting Although the original PlayStation only allowed up to 256² pixels for texture maps, our building faces were much more complex than cubic, flat walls. With diagonals, protrusions and chamfered geometry, we needed the flexibility of higher numbers without modernising the look.
We had no real upper limit on texture size, so a series of grey checkered images were created with varying sizes (32², 48², 64², 96², 128², etc.) up to 1024² to determine the scale needed for a particular building or design element. Once a texture’s pixel size looked good in-universe, the other textures’ sizes would be based on that to maintain consistency.
Some environments—mainly those with windows or glossy surfaces—called for more advanced texturing including reflections and luminance. For the most part, textures were colour/diffuse/albedo channels only, with lights in close proximity to simulate global illumination or light sources. However, reflections added a lot of depth to an otherwise confined space, allowing more room for the eye to explore.
Extreme reflections were also sometimes used for simple set extension, but it was never noticeable unless you were looking for it.

FUTURE ULTIMATE PHONE PEOPLE THINK
Google pixel 9pro
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is the new kid on the block in this year's lineup. The Pixel 8 Pro was succeeded by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and the 9 Pro is a new addition to the portfolio - it is a compact, full-featured flagship with all of the bells and whistles of its bigger XL sibling
A compact Pixel is not a new concept in itself, of course, but this is the first time Google is bringing the entirety of its A-game to this form factor. The Pixel 9 Pro packs a 48MP, 5x optical periscope telephoto camera - the same as the Pixel 9 Pro XL. There is also UWB onboard the Pixel 9 Pro. Frankly, it's kind of amazing that Google managed to fit so much extra hardware inside what is essentially the same footprint as the non-Pro Pixel 9.
Google Pixel 9 Pro specs at a glance: Body: 152.8x72.0x8.5mm, 199g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), aluminum frame; IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30 min). Display: 6.30" LTPO OLED, 120Hz, HDR10+, 2000 nits (HBM), 3000 nits (peak), 1280x2856px resolution, 20.08:9 aspect ratio, 495ppi; Always-on display. Chipset: Google Tensor G4 (4 nm): Octa-core (1x3.1 GHz Cortex-X4 & 3x2.6 GHz Cortex-A720 & 4x1.92 GHz Cortex-A520); Mali-G715 MC7. Memory: 128GB 16GB RAM, 256GB 16GB RAM, 512GB 16GB RAM, 1TB 16GB RAM; UFS 3.1. OS/Software: Android 14, up to 7 major Android upgrades. Rear camera: Wide (main): 50 MP, f/1.7, 25mm, 1/1.31", 1.2µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS; Telephoto: 48 MP, f/2.8, 113mm, 1/2.55", dual pixel PDAF, OIS, 5x optical zoom; Ultra wide angle: 48 MP, f/1.7, 123-degree, 1/2.55", dual pixel PDAF. Front camera: 42 MP, f/2.2, 17mm (ultrawide), PDAF. Video capture: Rear camera: 8K@30fps, 4K@24/30/60fps, 1080p@24/30/60/120/240fps; gyro-EIS, OIS, 10-bit HDR; Front camera: 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps. Battery: 4700mAh; 27W wired, PD3.0, PPS, 55% in 30 min (advertised), 21W wireless (w/ Pixel Stand), 12W wireless (w/ Qi-compatible charger), Reverse wireless. Connectivity: 5G; eSIM; Wi-Fi 7; BT 5.3, aptX HD; NFC. Misc: Fingerprint reader (under display, ultrasonic); stereo speakers; Ultra Wideband (UWB) support, Satellite SOS service, Circle to Search. Google also paid some extra attention to the display of the Pro. It is a bit bigger than the Pixel 8's and better than that inside the regular Pixel 9. The resolution has been upgraded to 1280 x 2856 pixels, the maximum brightness has been improved, and there is LTPO tech for dynamic refresh rate adjustment.

[Review] Sonic Battle (GBA)
Easily the best Sonic-themed arena fighter/RPG on the GBA.
As one of the more notable and novel spinoffs in the Sonic series I was interested to play Battle. 1996's Sonic the Fighters was a Virtua Fighter-style traditional 3D fighting game [which I bounced off hard], whereas in 2003 Sonic Team looked to Capcom's Power Stone for a more free-roaming arena fighter with a simple control scheme. The main surprise for me with this one though was its heavy story focus.
Sonic is chilling out in Emerald City, you know that place that he's always lived in with all his friends, that city that has existed before and will continue to exist. Anyway he meets some robot who he names Emerl, a learning machine that takes on the traits of others. Emerl bounces between his friends, getting into trouble with Eggman and growing all the way. Yada yada yada, ancient superweapon, the destruction of the planet, etc etc. It's a plot rich with incident, full of roadblocks and cheap excuses for fights, where the strength is in the little character moments along the way.
Some characters come off better than others. Emerl has a fun dynamic with Knuckles while he still has a childlike mindset, and there are nice bits with Cream and Rouge. Shadow really shines as Emerl's final mentor and arguably the heart of the whole story despite his scarce screentime, managing to not come off as an utterly boring character to me for the first time ever (now granted I haven't played his game or SA2). Amy on the other hand is at the peak of her "weirdo stalker" characterisation that it seems she was stuck in for, what, at least 15 years? The way she's written is godawful, a real embarrassment. So it's highs and lows, aka your typical Sonic product.
Another high is the art design. The Sonic Advance-style sprites have a lot of personality and animation to them, which helps convey the fight moves. The map is lovely isometric pixel art, while battles play out in little arenas modelled in full 3D with some nice varied textures. Sure the layouts are very simple, with just two levels of elevation and mostly cube-shaped platforms around but they manage some variety within that. You'll see the character portraits a lot during dialogue, so luckily they're fantastic, with a distinctive style that pops despite some slight GBA crunchiness.
The events play out over the course of eight character-centric plotlines that follow each other chronologically. There's a fair bit of repetition and what often feels like padding to stretch this into an 8-hour game over the course of all the campaigns. Don't expect any to tell a complete story, but each shapes Emerl in some way. This plays into the game design too, as Emerl is a customisable character. You'll play as him a bit less than half the time, so it's important to update his moveset with new actions won from your battles. Unfortunately Emerl's skill points increase slowly, and new moves are randomly dropped, to encourage link cable trading and grinding on optional battles or story replays. With the uneven difficulty this can create some unpleasant scenarios, but I got by using emulator features and some potent cheese strats.
So we come to the battle gameplay. I really like the platform fighter-esque simplicity of the control scheme, with complexity arising from the free movement in the arenas and strategising with your special moves. Aside from basic attacks, air attacks, and two directional strong attacks, which aren't hugely different between characters, you have your special moves on R. Each time you spawn in, you pick between projectile, power, and trap for your specials: one for grounded use, one for air use, and one that your character will automatically block against for the duration of that life. In this way you can choose your favourite variation, or react to an opponent's style or their guard choice.
It's an ingenious little system, but the battling is let down by ruthless AI and a dodgy camera. Like in a belt-scrolling beat-em-up, depth perception can be an issue as you often whiff attacks if you're not lined up just right, and opponents can escape offscreen. Try to engage them with normal attacks and you (or at least I) will be relentlessly countered and full-comboed to oblivion. Luckily, there are many ways to manipulate the engine and your foes, and finding the right one becomes a new kind of gameplay, if not the intended way to play.
For example, Rouge can maintain repeated airdrop combos, and with the right timing and spacing other characters can infinitely knock an opponent into a wall with a strong attack, then hit them again on the rebound. Emerl's basic ground shot can easily be repeated on any enemy even if they are blocking shots for cheap kills. The L button briefly blocks, then turns into a heal that also charges a special meter which when full turns specials into one-hit KO moves; any character with a fast charge (Knuckles, Cream, Emerl when properly equipped) can frequently get distance, charge up an OHKO, nail one or even two approaching enemies, rinse and repeat. Even spamming projectiles and traps can get you through in the right circumstances.
And that's why I love this system. It's broken, but you can work the jank in your favour and find many ways to exploit the game. It feels good! At first I was very frustrated but with a few pointers from friends and some goblin ingenuity I relished mastering this new style of play. The enemy's not fighting fair so why should I? Mwa ha ha!
It's worth noting that there's a few extra characters that are fought in the story that you can unlock for "free battle" or multiplayer, like a Gamma that isn't actually Gamma for lore reasons, or the slow but powerful Chaos. There's also a handful of minigames, but sadly most are locked to link cable play only. They look kinda cool but I'll never know. All I got was a lazy Knuckles-themed reskin of Windows 95 classic Minesweeper. Wahey.
Sonic Battle fits right in with some other Sonic games I've played recently: a heady mix of coolness, stupidity, great artistic choices, utter jank, some truly wrongheaded decisions, and gameplay that's a mess. In this case an endearing mess, so it comes out as a win. It's an easy must-play for Sonic fans. Especially for the story that feeds into Advance 3, Shadow the Hedgehog, and apparently Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. And speaking of, I wonder what's next on my checklist...?

Title: Another 90s Camera: Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z
DeviantART Version [CLICK ME!]
Hello, January! Sorry for the long delay, though. Because I have a lot of things that happened at the beginning of 2024. And GOOD NEWS, I've bought something that makes my PC bring back to LIFE, after 7 months of being inactive (since Jun 9th, 2023)! 🖥️🔧😀 Although I'm still working on the topic, maybe I'll submit it this Feb 2024! 😁
Right now, it's time for my 1st throwback item share of 2024, with this neat-old camera (as my improvise).🙂
• Here's another '90s camera, this is the Olympus Camedia C-2000 Z 📷 inherited from my late grandpa named Jim, who passed away on Jun 6th, 2020 owing to complications, as well as the victim of the COVID-19 virus. Once again, R.I.P, grandpa Jim. 😔⚱️🥀 Believe it or not, I used this '90s camera for submitting on dA, back in Jan 2010. 🙂📸🖼️
Here are my snapshots from the 2010s, so far using the 90s Olympus cam: ○ Jan. 4th, 2010 #1 - [CLICK ME!] ○ Jan. 4th, 2010 #2 - [CLICK ME!] ○ Jan. 19th, 2010 - [CLICK ME!]
BTW: #1: All these three we're stored to my dA private storage, but at least I've already posted on tumblr, couple of years ago.
(and) #2: Also, picturing & submitting these photos on whole "January" calendar was utterly coincidence. 😊📸
1st & 2nd Image(s) [took photos on Jan 19th, 2023]: ↑
• Anyways, the 90s Olympus cam possessed 2.1 megapixels of camera 📷✌️, which was pretty clear & and crisp at the time. However, as of 2024, it is considered a pretty low megapixel that no other modern high-quality companies make that, anymore. 🤷♀️ Except for cheap gadgets, of course. And when you compare to your (flagship/mid-range) smartphones 📱/digital cameras 📷 that possessed a whopping 150+ Megapixels, and sometimes 200+ megapixels for the Pro-DSLR camera brands 📷🖼️ speaks volumes to the consumers. It was simply an evolution of the camera lens. Today, like the brick phones from the 90s, the 90s cameras we're now a relic status of the past, meaning no one's using them, anymore due to outdated hardware. They now act as a throwback collection, which simply refuses to throw the trash 🚯, like this ancient 90s Olympus camera. 📷🫳 But hey, if your 90s camera still functions, then you're lucky to used it, but please be careful. 😉
• So, what about the "Olympus" 🇯🇵📷 brand? What happened? Are they still producing cameras? 🤔 Well, according to "quora.com", quote "Olympus has announced in June 2020 that it is selling its camera division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) and will exit the camera business altogether. The sale to JIP was completed in January 2021, and the new company created from the sale is called OM Digital Solutions." This means the Olympus camera brand is already off the camera wars; with Canon, Sony, and other Japanese camera brands still running the camera business. However, the Smartphone cameras became more advanced than the old-style digital cams. Here's hoping, that the digit cams will have the same treatment, or maybe still be around in case the smartphone's camera pixels weren't enough, in terms of the raw image.📷🤞
3rd & 4th Image(s) [Took photos on Jan 29th, 2024]: ↑
• Uh yeah, I forgot that the camera includes a soft case fitting for this model. And look, my paper dolls were delighted to see a throwback camera & they wanted a snapshot using it. 🙂📸 Yeah, but it's no longer working 📷❌, and I tried (using 4 Eneloop AA Batteries) 🔋🔋🔋🔋🤷♀️. So much so, that I decided to pretend to take snapshots with the old cam while taking photos with my actual camera from my current smartphone (Honor 8C). Was that a coincidence? 🤔 I'm not so sure 😅, but they're delighted. 😊
Well, that’s the end of my topic, more things to come this 2024. 😊
