Vijay Deverakonda's Special Request to Sandeep Reddy Vanga Vijay took to social media to commemorate the anniversary and show his appreciation for the film and its director. He also made a key request to Vanga: release the "full-cut" version of Arjun Reddy on the film's 10-year anniversary. This request has caused enthusiasm among fans, who want to see more footage from the legendary film. Vijay posted several behind-the-scenes images with Vanga, highlighting their camaraderie and creative teamwork throughout filming. These photographs serve as a reminder of the unique bond between the actor and director, which contributed to the film's success.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Response Sandeep Reddy Vanga answered affirmatively to Vijay's proposal, stating that he is willing to release the full-cut version of Arjun Reddy on its tenth anniversary. This revelation has delighted fans, who are eager to see the film in its full.
Arjun Reddy covers the lives of the title character, a talented but troubled surgeon who suffers with rage. His world is flipped upside down when he falls deeply in love with Preethi, but their relationship is strained owing to his destructive conduct. The film was then adapted in Hindi as Kabir Singh, and again in Tamil as Adithya Varma and Varmaa

It’s been one week now, and for the past seven days the only movies I’ve been watching are Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh, and Adhitya Varma. Those three movies are on rotation. I can’t stop watching these movies. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??? I watched The Sky is Pink for a break, and then I’m back to these adrenaline fueled movies. I’m addicted. I can’t stop googling about Indian Movies and their culture.

Also tagging @iwearplaids here, because one of the GIF-s posted above is from a set made by her, that says "STOP ROMANTICISING ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR."
Thanks girl. And no this is definitely one movie that needed no remakes.
This is BAD!
I’m sorry, I know there are more than just a couple of tags in my activity page, that courtesy tells me to see, and reblog/reply, for that is what keeps me sane, that my wonderful friends here remember me even though I seem to be en route to selling my soul and getting sucked in a corporate vortex, but NO-
I HAVE TO GET THIS OUT!
So last night, I started watching a film called Arjun Reddy, out of the sheer morbid curiosity that surrounds the motion picture. Mind you, I have already read, heard and watched the controversial reviews that this creative work has spun. I know that there are people (including, an ex-colleague of mine) who swear by the movie and its protagonist, (played by Vijay Deverakonda | Shahid Kapur, in the respective Telugu and Hindi versions. There is a Tamil adaptation/translation as well, and I think the lead role has been essayed by Dhruv Vikram, Vikram’s son). And I know that there are several who have trashed the movie online, on the grounds of severe misogyny.
I had that film added to my watchlist for a long long time, and yet I could not muster the time and the courage (yes, you read that right, courage) to watch it, lest I ended up liking it for the wrong reasons. Fortunately, there are absoutely zero reasons for me to be apprehensive about, because well - NEWS FLASH!
EVERYTHING! EVERY-FUCKING-THING IN THE STORY OF THE PROTAGONIST IS WRONG IN A MOVIE THAT MUST HAVE ITS CREDIT TO THE STORYTELLING SINCE IT HAS SO VERY MANY PEOPLE WHO SWEAR BY IT!
For starters, Vijay Deverakonda is a man that looks like this:
And it is THIS FACE, this very appearance that corrects more than half the wrongs that Arjun perpetrates on EVERYONE in this movie. It goes without saying that Deverakonda is an impeccable actor, who fit himself into the skin of this character like a glove. As tough as it might have been for him to portray this mess of a man who has a fucked up head, it is criminal to deny the acting chops this individual has.
Anyway, this was the mollusc, the interior is actually pretty disturbing, when you come to think of it.
Imagine you are an eighteen-nineteen year old on your first day of college. You know nothing, you’re in a place that you’re seeing for the first time ever in your life, you might as well find yourself looking forward to academic session, and the life that awaits you, and then…
YOU FIND A GUY WHO STARES AT YOU LIKE YOU’RE SOMETHING TO EAT!
It is undeniable. Yet you do not look at him because you don’t know him. And then, this very guy announces everywhere that you’re his WOMAN!
EXCLUSIVE TO HIM! NO ONE SHALL LOOK AT YOU, NO ONE SHALL TALK TO YOU!
That very day, you’re saved from ragging because hey! You’re HIS WOMAN, RIGHT? And that very day, he kisses you, and you know what, you didn’t even see that coming, did you?
With that face, it might seem sexy. Let’s now imagine it with a face that we see everyday, normal boys around us, for instance?
I find that scary. Fact of the matter: It should be scary even with these handsome faces that have given life to this character.
This guy, (normal faced?) suddenly jumps into your classroom, and decides who you should be friends with, because YO! GOOD LOOKING CHICKS AND FAT CHICKS MAKE THE BEST OF FRIENDS, RIGHT?!
He mouths lines like “Fat chicks are loyal.” (Really?!), and all of that gets a free pass because,HEY!
Well, guess WHAT!
DO NOT SELL THIS AS LOVE! This is stalking. This is the advent of a relationship where one gets the upper hand, and declares himself/herself (YES! IT APPLIES TO BOTH GENDERS! TOXICITY ISN’T REALLY A CONCEPT EXCLUSIVE TO A SINGLE GENDER!) as the be-all and end-all of the other.
This is NOT how a relationship should work. NO!
Ladies, and gentlemen, if you see such signs in your significant other, please feel free to show them the door, and say the aforementioned, beautifully lettered words. They deserve that, not you.
Later in the movie, Arjun defends Preethi’s honour, after she has been the victim of inept behaviour during Holi by his rivals. Which is good, because hey! He defends his ladylove.
To be very honest, this just seems like a smattering of feminism and defence just so the Hero, seems flawed, with his heart in the right place. How else can he be sympathised with, right?
The same hero, dispatches his woman to his beach house to recuperate, after she hurts her foot. Well, nothing wrong in there either, except-
LETS JUST SAY YOU’VE NOTICED IT!
We’re almost half an hour - or more - into the head of this character and his love story, and yet his ladylove, His WOMAN, HIS BANDI, hasn’t spoken a legitimate word yet. She has one-word answers to all his questions, but that’s pretty much about it.
OH WELL! You know what happens next!
THEY FUCK!
Of course they do. The song here, ‘Madhurame’ is beautifully sung, and had it just been a standalone song, it would have created a very erroneous impression of two people being besotted with each other, living a happy life. But well, forty-five minutes in, a couple of steamy scenes, and I knew that this had more to it than met the eye.
He romances her blatantly, proclaims his love for her openly, pays no heed to any taboo whatsoever, when it comes to public display of his affections for his girl, which is again, all good, considering that’s just what every human being wants, a fearless individual who is unafraid to declare his/her affections for the other.
There is yet another scene wherein he begins to assert his superiority .over her when she asks to stay back for just two more days. Even while he’s supposedly explaining things to her, there’s this perpetual undercurrent of rage. He does throw in a tantrum, and well… she puts up with it, like she had been putting up with his tantrums for all this while.
All this while, you might as well bring yourself to buy this love-story, till the problems actually begin in the second half. There were quite a few in the first half as well, but we shall come to it later, because it is in the second half that we see the monster that Arjun actually is.
Preethi becomes a doctor, and Arjun returns to Hyderabad to attend his brother’s wedding. And as the moment is opportune, he decides to visit his ‘baby’ and ask for her hand-in-marriage. Again, pretty hunky-dory because till now everything is consensual and hence, okay.
Her Father refuses, well, due to two reasons (three, actually, well, catching a couple kissing does not really go down very well with Indian fathers, for starters). The other two being, Arjun’s attitude, and his caste.
Now, here’s where the real problems with the protagonist bring themselves to light, if they hadn’t already, that is.
He literally is an asshole who asks her to “be a woman” and confront her father about their love, throws an unbearable fit of pique, slaps her, and gives her a timeline of six hours to decide (Note that this girl is already in an emotional mire, and the last thing she needs is a verbal, physical and hence psychological assault on herself). There is no reasoning, just plain anger, and what came across (to me) as abuse.
I don’t know where to begin here. Following this, he literally drinks himself, and drugs himself in a suicidal fit (he injects himself with morphine), pisses his pants (literally), and stays asleep for two days unaware of the fact, that Preethi has now literally been boarded up in her house, and yet makes an attempt to meet him.
Anyway, this rigmarole continues, till he is thrown out of his own family home by his father, and goes on to live in a flat that is probably owned by his closest friend, confidante, and partner-in-crime, Shiva.
With all the hell that Arjun brings upon himself post his break-up with Preethi, and her forced marriage to a Tulu guy (where he wreaks havoc, again, after having risen from his drug-induced stupor), he brings a part of Shiva with himself as well, who does call him out on his trash, multiple times, only to be berated, time and again. Forget feminism, this guy lacks the basic etiquette of just being grateful. Forget rawness, this human being comes across as just another jerk with a superiority complex, and an unusually high opinion of himself, because of his talent as a surgeon (and maybe, his privileged background)
Arjun’s treatment of Shiva and Kamal are no different. While on one hand, these two, particularly Shiva do their best to keep him alive, all he does is to simply insult them when they do so. Particularly striking, are two instances here:
1. Just to wash away Preethi’s memory, Arjun decides to visit the workplace of a patient of his, an actress, by the name of Jia Sharma. What does is nothing unexpected of him, he proposes her (forgive me for the lack of a better, more suitable word) to have a no-strings attached relationship with him, on the pretext of “physical help”. Where I believe, any other woman would literally have thrown him out, VD’s face comes to his rescue, and she agrees. Meanwhile, on the same set, when Shiva chides him, once again for his (more than) lingering obsession with Preethi, he simply decides to insult him for his clinic.
Jia’s episode, of course, does not end well. Given the fact that she did enjoy the sex, she develops feelings for him. She decides to confess her love for him, during one of their makeout sessions, and guess what he does,
Of course, he throws a fit, and walks out on her. Because, well… he did forewarn her about a no-strings attached clause, right?
2. Kamal announces his wedding with another friend of theirs. This guy, much to Arjun’s chagrin, has struck gold in his love life and hence is getting married to the girl he loves. To this Arjun just has to ruin his happiness by saying “You do not deserve a love marriage” and other equally contemptuous things that sum up to indicating that his lovestory with Preethi was a landmark, and no other man had the balls to have a love life, (a happy one at that) or a love marriage. In a rational world, people would definitely have walked out on him, just because of his attitude, and yet, Kamal and Shiva stay on, because they acknowledge how fucked up he is inside his head.
OH! YES! How could I miss out on Gautham, his brother?
This man gets his share of brickbats as well, while attempting to get his baby brother out of alcoholism, and substance abuse. His efforts go unacknowledged even when he tries to get him out of a legal clout, wherein he goes into performing a surgery, while drunk and high on cocaine.
In Arjun’s defense however, the sudden attack of conscience that he has comes as a tiny speck of light in the form of an attempted redemption. However, one can really assume the height of irresponsibility when he admitted to performing every-single-one of his surgeries while intoxicated heavily with alcohol and drugs.
In the end however, post a trip of reformation to Italy, which follows after his Grandmother’s death, (Point to note: It is only here, that he shows some signs of humanity, while attending her funeral rites. This is where probably, his route to redemption begins? However, here is where he makes amends with his family, and they send him off on a tour to hit his metaphorical refresh button) Arjun happens to meet a pregnant Preethi. He does confront her, and say that he shall be the child’s father, even if it wasn’t fathered by him biologically. Preethi refuses initially, but then, a few slaps, (this time from her) and a couple of tearful lines later, she tells him that he baby is his, and that her Tulu husband hadn’t even touched her little finger in a marriage that lasted only three days.
Well, it is a win-win because hey! No one should lose here, right?
See, there is nothing wrong with a story or a hero that is flawed and has severe anger-management issues. Mental health is real, as are the various components of it. The problem starts when this very flawed hero, is presented as an icon of love, which he isn’t. The problem lies in the fact that a spade is not called a spade here. A badly-brought up is a badly-brought up guy. A stalker is a stalker. An asshole is an asshole, and abuse is abuse. Colouring abuse as romance is problematic, and defending the same is even more so. After Arjun Reddy’s Nothern Twin, Kabir Singh was released, the debate on the film’s portrayal of its hero became the subject of much debate. There were (are) people who consider these men as the flag-bearers of intense romance. I confess that I might as well have been one with them had I watched this movie in my teens, as corroborated by @ruminationsofaraven in a conversation I had with her last night. Back then, such raw, intense portrayal were a rarity, and the new shiny stuff always has takers. But having taken myself up the ladder of twenty-six years, through two miserable failures of relationships, I can say that I understand the concept of abuse, which was a very prominent characteristic in my first relationship. Of course, it wasn’t physical, at all, but it was mental, which led me to a spate of depression and anxiety which continues to this day. Today, I see the shit this man pulls and keeps pulling and surprisingly gets away with it, And if anyone says that he pays for it in the form of penance, with all the substance abuse, and alcoholism, please! NO! He mires other people in his dumpster as well. It is not JUST him, it is Kamal, and Shiva who bear the aftermath in equal measure, putting up with him and his endless tantrums.
There have been films before, where abusive characters have been called out to be what they are, (Anjaan, Darr, Aitraaz) and there have been films where abuse has very conveniently been reconciled with love. The latter outweighs the former, and Arjun Reddy| Kabir Singh| Adithya Varma are just three feathers added to that cap of abuse.
To those of you, who’ll call out saying “Had this been Hollywood, you would have sung praises of the film and its lead.”, Boss, there is no WOOD whatsoever that cannot be adjudged as a culprit here. Abuse carved out of any WOOD is just what it is. Abuse perpetrated by any gender is just what is should be.
ABUSE!
The saddest part is, when the director stood up to defend it saying, “People in love have the right to hit each other, whenever they want.” or something to that effect. You can watch the entire interview here
“Sir, with all due respect, while acknowledging your storytelling expertise India is a country that still emulates. You standing in stoic defense of your brainchild is fine, but please remember, there are a few idiots out there, who shall run this experiment on a woman,
And THAT woman, Sir, MIGHT NOT BE PREETHI.”
The mandatory tag list follows: @mayavanavihariniharini @ruminationsofaraven @bleedinknight and @carminavulcana. I was so angry that I had to get it out here, Sorry guys, and thank you for putting up with my day-long (and now post-long rant) about this.

Varmaa (2020) Review
I actually like Adithya Varma (perhaps because I have not watched Arjun Reddy yet) but Bala's version is a mess. I can totally understand now why Chiyaan Vikram had to ask for another version. Varmaa looks like a highlight reel of Arjun Reddy without any good moments. Dhruv Vikram does his best and is not bad at all. The performances of the rest of the cast (except Eshwari Rao) are forgettable. You know what... Let's just pretend this version doesn’t exist.
