Adieu Philippine (Jacques Rozier, 1961)
1. Una vez, al preguntársele por qué era tan grande la pantalla de la Cinématheque Française en el Palais de Chaillot, Henri Langlois dijo que era para poder proyectar las películas de Rossellini, que continuaban más allá de los encuadres. Este es el primer punto de contacto entre el maestro italiano y el primer film de Jacques Rozier, Adieu Philippine (1961), que podrán ver si prestan un poco de atención a los programas de los cineclubs, y si las Juntas directivas de éstos se la prestan a su programación. Por tanto, nada de encuadres rígidos, delimitados y exactos: el encuadre es un margen que debe ser flexible para abarcar los signos de vida —los gestos, las miradas— allí donde los haya.
2. Pocos de los intérpretes de Adieu Philippine son actores profesionales. Todos se mueven con libertad, casi todos improvisan. Rozier ha rodado con varias cámaras, como si hiciera un reportaje en directo para la TV. Su punto de vista es, ante todo, documental (de nuevo Rossellini). Sin embargo, esta película no se presenta como un documental, ni pretende ser cinéma-verité. Simplemente, unas personas que no son actores dan cuerpo y vida a unos personajes con los que, sin duda, tienen bastante que ver. Por consiguiente, tras dar un rodeo por la ficción, volvemos a lo real: Rozier filma la verdad de sus intérpretes.
3. Adieu Philippine es una de las películas menos "construidas" y predeterminadas que se han hecho. No cuenta una historia, muestra estados de ánimo, relaciones, movimientos. No tiene un desarrollo claramente estructurado en escenas y secuencias: como la vida, se percibe como algo continuo en lo que siempre pasa algo, hasta cuando aparentemente no ocurre nada. En consecuencia, su motor es el tiempo, y la película un gotear de instantes que se acumulan, segundo a segundo, en nuestras sensaciones (y en las vidas de sus personajes). Pocas películas han sabido recrear con tal exactitud el fluir del tiempo. Ni siquiera La commare secca (1962), de Bernardo Bertolucci.
4. Adieu Philippine es un film sobre la juventud. Pudo haber sido alegre, brillante, artificial, pero Rozier supo no interponerse entre el espectador y la realidad, devolviendo al objetivo su función originaria —como Chaplin, Renoir, Rossellini, Hawks, Rohmer—, y filmando con sencillez y claridad. El orden y la libertad, en el cine, no son incompatibles. Por ello, Adieu Philippine derriba la barrera que separa al cine de la vida, a la ficción de la realidad, y rasga la pantalla que se interpone entre el film y sus —escasos, por desgracia— espectadores. Como Hatari!, Adieu Philippine es un fragmento de vida, y no una película. Godard dijo: "la vida llena la pantalla como un grifo una bañera que se vacía de la misma cantidad al mismo tiempo". Adieu Philippine es la película que mejor cumple esta definición del cine, pues "(la vida) pasa, y el recuerdo que nos deja es su imagen" (Godard).
5. Adieu Philippine es anterior a Forman, Passer, Mészáros y otros cineastas del comportamiento. Godard aprendió mucho de ella —como Rozier de À bout de soufle— y, vampirizándola, la enriqueció en Masculin Féminin (1966). También Maurice Pialat, autor de la capital L'Enfance nue (1968), debió sacar un buen provecho. En España, lo único que se acerca a ella es un mediometraje de Antonio Drove: ¿Qué se puede hacer con una chica? (1969).
6. Con Adieu Philippine, Jacques Rozier paga su deuda a los creadores del realismo cinematográfico: Lumière, Griffith, Chaplin, Stroheim, Renoir y Rossellini, sin olvidar al polifacético Vigo, lo sabrían. Adieu Philippine es la quintaesencia de la "Nouvelle Vague", su película más representativa. Dificultades de producción, de rodaje y, sobre todo, de sonorización, elevaron su presupuesto de tal manera, que Rozier no ha conseguido desde entonces volver a hacer una película, pese a sus esfuerzos. Mal estrenada, Adieu Philippine fue un fracaso comercial. Muchas personas desconocen esta obra maestra; si puede, deje de ser una de ellas.

A YouTube aircheck archivist with the moniker "YEOW" obtained a Cable TV recordings overnight on Sunday, an hour before Midnight on New Year's Day by the first week of January 2024, the last programme airing on PIE Channel concludes with the last 30 minutes dedicated to the 'PIE Playlist', offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane for viewers who have been part of the channel's journey since late-May 2022. The emotional farewell will mark the end of an era for traditional television broadcasting in the Philippines, as PIE Channel bids adieu to Cable TV and transitions to a fully digital platform in 2024.
